Good article to keep handy if somebody on Twitter or FB tells you that the Robertsons could just flip A&E the bird and take the show to another network:

‘Duck Dynasty’ family members contractually bound to A&E, source says

“It’s not as easy as just not returning to the show, since they all have binding agreements. It’s the network’s option, not theirs,” an insider connected to the production told FOX411. “Plus the family makes far too much money selling merchandise because of the show. It would be a bad business decision to leave it.

According to Beverly Hills-based entertainment attorney Julian Chan, each show participant is generally under a separate deal when it comes to these types of contracts. So each family member could be subject to a breach of contract claim regardless of what happens to anyone else on the show, no matter what his or her role.

We’re also told that the contracts have morality clauses that give the network the right to get rid of cast members — but the others still have to keep the show running.

re: #13 Eclectic Cyborg

Yep. And with a separate contract for each family member, the costs of a contract breach would quickly add up. And would go even higher if they tried to fight A&E in court. Buying out their contracts, as some have suggested, assumes that A&E would be willing to let them go from the show. And there’s no way in hell that A&E would sell the intellectual property rights to another network or waive the non-compete clause.

Hello Bryan has it never occurred to you that not all “wounded warriors” are Christian? Of course never.

From a rabbi who visited soldiers during the Civil War:

The number of Jews in the army is very large, I found some even among Berdan’s Sharpshooters. As a general rule, they are not known as Jews, but hundreds with whom I have conversed express their anxiety and hope that some provision may be made for them, so that in case of sickness or death, they be not left to the mercy of strangers. This was more forcibly impressed upon my mind by the numerous Jewish patients I visited in the Hospitals, nearly all of whom complained that they had not seen a “Yehudee” since they entered the Hospitals, that they have in addition to the sufferings of disease, to submit to the torture of religious controversy, forced upon them by Christian clergymen, who are anxious “to save their souls” (!)

Yeah, A&E owns the copyright as well as all the intellectual property. So even if the family would bear the cost of breaching every one of their contracts, there would be no way to make another “Duck Dynasty” on another network. A&E would be quick to sue anybody who tried to make a copycat show, even if under a different name.

Yep, contrary to the assumptions by the fans, A&E is the one with all the leverage. The show goes on, Phil or no Phil, for at least another year. All the threats to boycott the network only weaken the family’s position, not A&E’s.

‘What an amazing present’: Boston Marathon survivor makes bid to walk

usnews.nbcnews.com

“Eight months after twin bombings at the Boston Marathon nearly took one survivor’s left leg, she can finally put two feet on the ground.

“Rebekah Gregory, 26, has had 14 surgeries in a bid to save the leg, though she has faced constant pain and the prospect of amputation many times. She started physical therapy in the summer but had to stop when her doctors determined she would need to wear a device to get her foot into the right position if she hoped to ever walk on it again. That came off at Thanksgiving, when they replaced it with a cast. And on Monday, Gregory graduated to a walking boot.

“To put two feet on the ground again was the most amazing feeling,” Gregory told NBC News from her parents’ home in Richmond, Texas. “And just right before Christmas, too. It’s like, what an amazing present this year.”

Retired pastor blames ‘high sex drive’ after bust in Wyoming gay sex sting

A retired pastor told police in Wyoming that his high sex drive was to blame after he was arrested when he asked an undercover officer to perform oral sex on him.

The Casper Police Department on Sunday charged 75-year-old Rev. Bryant Badger with public indecency, obscene literature and incitement to a crime.

According to an affidavit obtained by the Casper Star-Tribune, Badger had left his phone number and graphic propositions scrawled in a portable restroom at Morad Park, which was discovered by a Natrona County High School coach.

This will be my first Christmas away from Lubbock in quite a few years. I don’t miss it at all. Every day I am away I become more and more aware of what a hellhole it really is. My current digs, in the wilderness west of Fort Worth, are a virtual paradise of social and cultural progress by comparison. Yes, it is that bad.
It occurred to me that with a population that is 37% Hispanic and 9% black, Lubbock should already have reached the “demographic tipping point” so dreaded by the Tea Party. It clearly has not though, and I am not sure why it hasn’t.
I can speculate though. Religion is very powerful in Lubbock. Along with alcohol abuse and methamphetamine it is the primary driver of social action there. It may be that the minority religious communities can pump out enough anti-gay and anti-abortion propaganda to keep enough minorities from voting their own interest and tipping the balance for good. This could well change with Pope Francis laying down the law to haters in the RC Church, but it may take a while.
It doesn’t help that the local Democratic party is controlled by clueless 60s throwback moonbats and other white elitists. These loons, for instance, attended a rabidly anti-Obama “stop the drones” rally just two weeks before the presidential election last year. They will start a sermon against Ronald Reagan at the drop of a buzzword and they are one of the strongest bastions of liberal/left conspiracy-think left anywhere. The solution is for minorities, union members, and the few feminists and other liberal whites to combine forces, throw the trustafarian navel gazers out of the Dem leadership, get rid of the Vietcong flags and Kumbaya karaoke, and join Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the 21st century.

Demographics only matter to a degree. What really matters is the groups that actually get out and vote. Tea Partiers are one of the most likely groups to do so. Blacks and Hispanics, not so much. It will change of course, but it will take a bit longer than the racial makeup of the area might suggest.

But Kirel also has a point that what local party leaders talk about makes a difference. Raging against drones is preaching to the choir; It has no appeal beyond the further left half of the Democratic party base. Holding a rally on the topic simply allows local Republicans to plausibly lambast local Democrats as anti-military.

The kind of dudebro ‘leadership’ seen in Lubbock Democrats does not resonate with Latinos at all. Black folks will still vote Democratic, but they won’t be energized. If you want people to vote for you, you’ve got to engage them, and right now that area’s Democratic leadership is so used to protest politics that they don’t know how to fight to win.

Time to get in gear for the Xmas Eve dinner tonight. Sear-roasted rib eyes, purple potatoes with shallots, broccoli, cranberry-walnut bread, that buche de Noel I’ve been working on, on and off, all day (came out great!) and of course good wine, good friends, and beloved family.

Good night all-Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it, and a lovely day for all of you who don’t.

You’re probably well aware of (or appropriately dismissive of) all the following disjonted nonsense, but:

Fort Worth tries to present itself as ‘Where the West begins’, which subtly implies that it’s therefore ‘Where the South ends.’ I’ve lived there for ~15 years and find it more or less accurate. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

The concept I most closely associate with Lubbock is the concept of the 40-something Baptist “Youth minister”, who invariably has a goatee, and invariably feels comfortable telling pre-teens what they should think, feel, and do about sex. He does this with not just impunity, but with the encouragement of the parents of the aforementioned pre-teens. I don’t have kids, but I’m pretty sure that if I did, approximately the last thing I would want would be them hearing about sex from some low-rent Guy Fiery clone who claimed the bible told him so.

Because when we did they lied. So we tested airframe forms like Dyna Soar to be able to spy on them. As an added bonus, the B-52 that released them still could have been converted on fairly short notice to carry nuclear bombs and unload them on the Soviet Union, and the Soviets did not forget that fact. Using a B-52 was part ‘it was the best airframe’ and part ‘Look how how big a load our bombers can carry’.

How the other half live! Lisa Vanderpump reveals her very ‘high class problem’ of losing a swan from her Beverly Hills home

It seems Christmas could be cancelled in the Vanderpump household this year - after reality star Lisa revealed some very troubling news.

Taking to Twitter on Christmas Eve, the 53-year-old millionairess explained that one of her swans had gone missing from the grounds of her Beverly Hills home.

Perhaps expecting a lack of sympathy from some of her less fortunate followers, Lisa was the first to refer to the situation as a ‘high class problem’.

I know it’s what some people may call ‘a high class problem,’ she wrote.

‘However, 1 of my baby swans took off yesterday.’

Lisa then posted a picture of her two swans, floating in her audacious exterior water feature in her garden.

Image: article-2529009-1A47BCC800000578-118_634x538.jpg

Note that in the LA area keeping swans is more for appearances. In the Chicago area, by contrast, a family or business that keeps swans on their pond or lake most likely does so to keep Canadian Geese away.

That was one of my birds! The -H model had it all over the previous B-52s. Bypass fans instead of turbojets with water injection systems, longer range, spectacularly better climb capabilities, &c. Those turrets under the nose were added in the mid-70s. One was infra-red, the other low light TV.

You could fly that thing (and we did) with one pilot flying just off those cameras and the right seater sweating bullets with his hands right next to the yoke, at night, through the Absarokas. Tremendous fun.

Megaroc was a 1946 British proposal to modify a captured V-2 rocket and use it to send an insane intrepid volunteer into suborbital space. Merry Christmas everyone. May you find peace, joy, and happiness in this, and every season.

I went ahead and did the traditional thing. Ate Chinese food and saw a movie. American Hustle. It was a great period piece. They totally nailed the Abscam era, and the acting was top notch. The movie could have improved the pacing a bit, but there was a deliberateness to the movie that made the extra time worthwhile.

Let’s just say that any accolades sent Amy Adams’ way is so totally deserving, and Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and Bradley Cooper gave tremendous performances. But Christian Bale definitely showed a different side from what we’ve seen in the Dark Knight trilogy.

“thumb drive In My Pocket”
By Alanis Snowden

I’m broke but I’m expatriated
I’m poor but I’m re-educated
I’m short but I’m healthy, yeah
I’m high but I’m a dudebro
I’m sane though a little narcismo
I’m lost but I’m hopeful baby
What it all comes down to
Is that everything’s gonna be fine fine fine
‘cause I’ve got one thumb drive in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five
I feel drunk but I’m jacked on Red Bull
I’m young and I’m on the internet
I’m tired but I’m oppressed, yeah
I care but I’m restless
I’m here but I’m really Neo Fawkes
I’m wrong and I’m sorry baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything’s gonna be tracked and oppressed
‘cause I’ve got one thumb drive in my pocket
And the other one is pointing towards Brazil
And what it all comes down to
Is that I haven’t got it all figured out just yet
‘cause I’ve got one thumb drive in my pocket
And the other one is giving the V sign
I’m free but I’m in an oppressive country
That puts gays in jail
I’m hard but I’m hipster yeah
I’m sad but I’m sardonic
I’m brave but I’m chickenshit
I’m sick but I’m pretty baby

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one’s really got it figured out just yet
‘cause I’ve got one thumb drive in my pocket
And the other one is playing the Guardian
And what it all comes down to my friends
Is that everything’s just fine fine fine
‘cause I’ve got one thumb drive in my pocket
And the other one is taking a selfie from Moscow

It’s funny, I spent the better part of the last 5 years not watching any new Doctor Who, now I’ve spent the last two weeks catching up so I can sit and wait for the latest holiday special.

And the wait is killing me.

Rifles are cheaper than sports cars, and they retain value better if you take care of them.

Since we all know that Santa is White, meaning northern European, it might be interesting to delve into Santa’s evolutionary background.

Today a new paper popped up on BioRxiv ” Ancient human genomes suggest three ancestral populations for present-day Europeans ” :

Analysis of ancient DNA can reveal historical events that are difficult to discern through study of present-day individuals. To investigate European population history around the time of the agricultural transition, we sequenced complete genomes from a ~7,500 year old early farmer from the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) culture from Stuttgart in Germany and an ~8,000 year old hunter-gatherer from the Loschbour rock shelter in Luxembourg. We also generated data from seven ~8,000 year old hunter-gatherers from Motala in Sweden. We compared these genomes and published ancient DNA to new data from 2,196 samples from 185 diverse populations to show that at least three ancestral groups contributed to present-day Europeans. The first are Ancient North Eurasians (ANE), who are more closely related to Upper Paleolithic Siberians than to any present-day population. The second are West European Hunter-Gatherers (WHG), related to the Loschbour individual, who contributed to all Europeans but not to Near Easterners. The third are Early European Farmers (EEF), related to the Stuttgart individual, who were mainly of Near Eastern origin but also harbored WHG-related ancestry. We model the deep relationships of these populations and show that about ~44% of the ancestry of EEF derived from a basal Eurasian lineage that split prior to the separation of other non-Africans.

Given they now have the DNA decoded of these 8000 y.o. Europeans, they looked at the obvious - hair, eye, and skin color; from the supplemental material:

For hair color, the integrated results of the genotype-based pigmentation models indicate that there is at least a 99% probability that both the Stuttgart and Loschbour individuals had dark (brown or black) hair. The Hirisplex model assigns the highest probability to black hair color for both individuals
(Table S7.4).

The results of the 8-plex skin pigmentation model were inconclusive for both the Loschbour and Stuttgart individuals. However, the Loschbour and Stuttgart genotypes at rs1426654 in SLC24A5 indicate that the Stuttgart individual may have had lighter skin than the Loschbour hunter and gatherer.

The Loschbour individual is homozygous for the rs1426654 ancestral allele, while Stuttgart is homozygous for the derived skin-lightening allele (22, 23).

For eye color, the single most significant determinant is the rs12913832 SNP in the HERC2 gene. The genotype at this site excludes the possibility that the Stuttgart farmer had blue eyes. Positive iris color determinations are less secure. The Loschbour forager is homozygous for the derived allele at rs12913832, indicating that this individual is likely to have had blue (52% probability) or intermediate iris color (27% probability). It has been suggested that this mutation arose within the last 6,000 to 10,000 years, and thus the Loschbour individual would have been a relatively early carrier (24).

So they hunter-gatherer guy might have had blue eyes but probably had the darker skin, while the lighter skin guy did not have blue eyes.

Also, none of them had the allele that allows for lactase production persistence - so no milk drinking for these Europeans.

So much for leaving Santa some milk with his cookies.

And about those blues eyes for Santa…

A site that greets me with a pop-up about Phil Robertson being “fired” has its knickers in a twist over a Bad Religion CD? Hilarious. That the songs are sold as “satire,” that word that gets trotted out when Rush Limbaugh calls a woman a “slut” and Megyn Kelly swears Santa and Jesus are white, is just icing on the cake.

In actuality, a longer barrel normally means someone who less of a poser and more interested in target shooting. But goofily, the depicted rifle still has a bayonet lug, though the long barrel would make the use of a bayonet impossible.

On American television, 25 year-old doctors routinely perform vascular surgery, organ transplants, neurosurgery, emergency field amputations, and other things that Sound Crazy But Just Might Work. They almost always work, and the patient almost always lives happily ever after.

This is just further proof that the American medical system is the best in the world, and American Exceptionalism, and America, and America.

Nah, the hilarious part is that link on the FB page is to a Freeper page that links to Townhall. Apparently one of the members of the brain trust at FR declared that Bad Religion should be “dropped from their record company.” Apparently nobody’s taken the fellow aside and broken it to him that the label is owned by a member of the band.

I liked the comments better at Townhall. There’s seems to be a good number of Bad Religion fans in the freeper circles.

And it was the author of the piece, that cretin Brent Bozell from Newsbusters that suggested that Bad Religion be dropped from their label. Don’t these fuckers know how to use Google? :)

Apparently not, since “American Jesus” has been around since the early 90s and it’s only now that this dipshit’s getting worked up about it. And apparently the idea of a punk rock band railing against religion and authority is something totally new to him.
