The Auld Triangle

Some songs just lead strange lives.

Speaking of strange, there have been so many Christmas songs recorded that the world did not need, and then there are those that not only were not needed but were just strange.

Anyway, what Christmas music ought not be:

Not to worry, the next teen idol will be along shortly. And Justin can return to a life of obscurity.

One of the things I like about Christmas music is how clearly idiomatic a recording can be, a reflection of the contemporary culture.

Here is a recording that shouts “1960’s” like crazy:

MP3 Audio

This need to reproduce an older work in a contemporary form is a trait that runs through all kinds of art.

This gets back to the whole “Santa is white” thing. The Fox Blondes, O’Reilly, Palin, etc. need Santa to be white, but they also just as much need to pronounce such things publicly, as a form of group-bonding. They need to reflect the same belief among themselves, analogous to how a recording artist needs to produce music in a contemporary idiom to sell in quantity.

Hubby got a beautiful fresh centerpiece for the table. It seems I’ve developed an allergy to the Pine (or Pine fragrance). It smells wonderful, but had to take allergy drugs.

Is it important that people value you? I understand that it is a hard time, but people are so much into their own shit at the holidays —their own issues and emotions, I’d rather not be around them.

It is important, as I don’t value myself that much.

It’s a counter-action to prevent me from becoming egotistical and arrogant like other people with Asperger’s I have met, like my Dad, or a guy I knew at college.

I have all sorts of mental things I do to try and cope with problems, and to prevent new ones from coming up.

Still trying to figure out the twittersphere. Only half-trying because by the time I get too far the next best thing will be upon us.

Twitter appeals to me because of its simplicity. There’s only one way to speak on Twitter, it has to be 140 characters or less. It makes me put some thought into what I’m posting online.

That, and I’m followed by pro skiers and members of my favorite band! I’m in their feed! For Real! LOL!

Twitter is a strange medium, however I think it can be a quite effective medium if used properly. Which it never is by probably over 90% of its users.

Hell, didn’t I read somewhere that your average Twitter user has only one follower? Hmm.

The next morning, ignoring their mother’s pleas, the sisters went back for more. In all, the girls would spend four summers in the tobacco fields, working sixty hours during a typical week, their earnings usually $7.25 an hour. For many teens, memories of summer include a nostalgic mix of freedom and boredom, with lazy afternoons spent doing next to nothing. But the Cuello sisters mostly remember feeling exhausted, dizzy and nauseated. Only later would they learn why: the fields were poisoning them.

The photos caused an uproar, but it wasn’t until 1938 that Congress finally passed the Fair Labor Standards Act. Along with establishing a minimum wage and overtime pay, the FLSA banned “oppressive child labor,” preventing youth under 18 from working in mines and factories. The FLSA was a seminal achievement, but it has significant loopholes. Influenced by racist Southern politicians, who argued in the 1930s that “you cannot put the Negro and the white man on the same basis,” the law left out minimum wage and overtime protections for agricultural and domestic workers—the industries that employed the majority of African Americans at the time.

History we must not forget.

Sarah Palin: ‘I haven’t read’ Duck Dynasty interview but anus remark is ‘quoting the Gospel’

“I haven’t read the article,” Palin admitted, clearing her throat. “I don’t know exactly how he said it. But, Greta, what he was doing was in response to a question about a lifestyle that he disagrees with. And yet he has said over and over again, he doesn’t hate the person engaging in a lifestyle he disagrees with. But in response, he was quoting the Gospel.”

“So people who are so insulted and offended by what he said, evidently, are offended by what he was quoting in the Gospel. So that’s another interesting aspect in all of this.”

ATTENTION!
URGENT COMMUNIQUE FROM GRINCH AND SCROOGE SUPREME WORLD HEADQUARTERS
From: Cthulhu
Subject: “war on Christmas”

It is my sad duty to report that our efforts to intercept the “Red Elf” Santa Claus and his propaganda sleigh have once again been frustrated by the illegal, unconstitutional intervention of NORAD, a federally funded agency that has no business facilitating the religiously motivated bribery of children.
The news is equally bleak elsewhere. On the commerce front, even the grinchiest of business enterprises, Walmart, has closed for the day. The only bright spot is that the Salvation Army’s infantry, the notorious “bell ringers,” have finally been forced to retreat back to their lairs with loot in hand.
Lord Cthulhu wishes you a happy and nutritious solstice and renews Its standing invitation to the daily banquet at our headquarters under the Greenland icecap.

LOL! Had to look out the window to see what Scotty, the Irish Terrierist who lives next door was frantically barking about. The new puppy Laddy, who is kind of a mix of collie and something else, was busy trying desperately to get Smokey, a.k.a. Pope Smokems I, to play with him. Finally, after a minute of royal aloofness as he wandered up the driveway, Smokey turned and batted Laddy across the nose, which caused Laddy to turn and run in gleeful abandon around to the other side of the truck. Smokey then proceeded to run to the front of the truck, where he peered behind one of the tires until Laddy was within range, and then completely ambushed the poor dog. Then Smokey continued on his walk up the drive, as though nothing had happened. I suspect no one is supposed to witness these small lapses of decorum on his part.

Christmas grettings from the Middle Kingdom! Today was a full day, in all aspects of that adjective. {burp!}

After a relaxing morning, I dropped off an old cellphone I didn’t need to a student who had just lost hers, then to a scrumptious lunch at the new home of my friends, Tina and jeremy. Tina is a former student of mine here, and about the same age as my daughter. Tina’s dad and I drank baijiu (Chinese firewater) together, then sang karaoke with his karaoke machine. Left there, visited another friend in her shop, then to dinner at the home of one of my former students - also scrumptious, also baijiu. Now bleary eyed with food and alcohol, I met 8 of my freshmen, who accompanied me to my flat to give me a Tang-dynasty style jacket (bright red — see below) and … wait for it … food!

re: #66 Shiplord Kirel

I keep trying to get on this mailing list. Every time I open a message, the souls of 100,000 cursed orphans come screaming out of the monitor; wailing, gnashing their teeth, and setting the cable box to Home Shopping Network.

Chtullu’s IT department blows, let me tell you.

Morning and Merry Christmas Lizards.

A pox on both FedEx and the USPS houses for failure to meet scheduled delivery time.

I sent my aunt a package via FedEx, but I haven’t been able to get a hold of her to confirm that she got it. I’ll check the tracking number, but I hope she’s all right.

Yes. I know. Especially for Amazon using USPS for delivery.

Yep. Both orders from Amazon. Both late. I can see the USPS missing a delivery date. But FedEx? c’mon. To add even more insult to this mess, I paid the higher expedited shipping fee so that they would be here in time.
grumble, grumble.

I’d flip which I’d expect to see missing a delivery date. In stress times (disasters, Christmas, and so forth) my experience has been that USPS is more reliable.

That said, I laugh at anyone expecting reliability during stress times. So haha. (and sympathy for your frustration, of course.)

I really try to cut the USPS as much slack as possible, especially in light of the GOP’s back-breaking “You must fund your pension 80 years in advance” murder attempt.

But, man, do they make it hard. I get a note in my PO box yesterday, saying to see the clerk about the final package I’m waiting for. Unfortunately, they closed at noon, and this is 3PM. My fault, no one else’s.

I look behind me, and the double door (the kind where the top half opens) hasn’t been shut yet. I can hear and see people moving around. I figure, “It’s Christmas, what the heck?” So, I say “Hello?” and politely try to get someone’s attention for 5 minutes.

Absolutely nothing. No responses, even though I can hear people standing around the corner talking and doing shit.

I get that it’s Christmas and everyone wants to go home. If you’re not going to help me, fine. You know what, though?

BE A FREAKING PROFESSIONAL AND SAY SO.

I really do try to support the USPS, but damn; they make it hard.

I do indeed and appreciate all of you!

The guys aren’t going to have a particularly good day today…there’s a winter weather advisory (with 20 mph winds!) in Michigan. There’s still a lot of ice and that wind is going to wreak havoc.

Well, it’s cold here in Detroit (21) and we’re getting some snow flurries, but no accumulation expected.

I’m not going anywhere except to the hairdresser, I have an appointment this morning.

then I’m staying in all day, making soup and baking bread.

Part of that’s because unlike lots of businesses, the mail is ABSOLUTELY sacrosanct. A postman I knew once told me that if a piece of mail dropped out of the sorting machine and wound up on the floor, there was a freaking procedure for how it got put back into the system, because of the level of paranoia concerning the mail getting to exactly whom it is supposed to get to. I could imagine that the folks on the other side of the wall are completely prohibited from simply grabbing a package and handing it over, even if the person has i.d. It’s probably a firing offense. And they may be afraid that getting into a discussion about it with a customer might lead to a CNN breaking news story with lots of dead postal employees involved.

Ignoring the customer would be far more likely to lead to someone on the verge of losing it opening fire than sympathetically explaining the situation would. And leaving aside that sort of concern (which is highly unlikely, truth to tell), ignoring someone who is asking for help in a case like that is bad customer service. It makes the organization look bad and encourages people to not do business with you.

re: #103 Dark_Falcon

Have you ever worked in a retail or customer service-oriented job? Probably the only professionals that have to deal with a greater number of beligerant lunatics and scumbag con artists are cops and ER nurses.

When you’re closed, you are closed. Regardless of whether it’s ‘good customer service’, if you do business with one person after hours, you’re quickly opening yourself up to becoming a 24-hour operation. There may also be legal or liability reasons why you can’t deal with people outside business hours. It’s easier to ignore an after-hours customer than it is to try to explain to them why you’re not going to help them. Americans in particular have been trained since birth with the nonsensical idea that “the customer is always right” and that a place of business is morally obligated to give the customer what they want, and to do whatever it takes to keep an individual person as a satisfied customer. That’s a really good way to wreck your business and make your employees and yourself into a bunch of disgruntled misanthropes. Sometimes you just have to ignore the customer until he goes away.

10th Circuit Court denies same-sex marriage stay

“Late Tuesday, the 10th Circuit Court in Denver denied Utah’s request to put a halt to the marriages, hundreds of which have been happening throughout the state since Friday.”

And of course this decision will be appealed to the SCOTUS were I suspect it will be denied.

Morning and Merry Christmas Lizards.

A pox on both FedEx and the USPS houses for failure to meet scheduled delivery time.

I think FedEx had a total meltdown yesterday. My brother was nearly late for our already later than usual Xmas Eve dinner because they hadn’t shown up at his business to pick up stuff. Since FedEx’s whole business model is to make themselves the go-to business shipper, this makes me suspect they had some major issues.
FedEx, never did show, brother made it to dinner as did the rest of the family and friends, and we all had a lovely time.
