Merry Christmas to all LGF readers, each and every one! Here’s a Yuletide open thread to kick off the day.

(I have to admit it doesn’t feel much like Christmas in Los Angeles — the temperature’s going up to 80º today!)

Merry Christmas Charles and the late arriving Lizards.

It doesn’t feel really Christmassy in Honolulu: everything is mostly open and seems like a normal day. They also cater to about 60% Japanese too, might have something to do with it.

But my wife is happy and singing Christmas music, so that means I’m happy.

Did Xmas local kine style last night with Filipino food, and of course like always, I DOMINATED White Elephant. Just about took $20 in cash from a 9 yr old girl but knew the ride home would be.. uncomfortable. So I stole a cutting board/pad set.

Merry Christmas, one and all!

It got cold here in New York, and it snowed for about an hour last night - not enough to bollox traffic or anything, but just enough to make it feel and look like Christmas Eve.

And I drank too much Bailey’s and have a woozy head today. But it was good at the time.

At the Longs Drugs in the mall yesterday, total madhouse.

Inside a very big old dude with the 10 Commandments on his shirt and other Scripture stuff was handing out literature.

He struck up conversation with a tranny dude, no doubt to try and give him literature. They conversed for a few moments, and we all moved on.

I go to the line, Old 10 Commandments Guy was in front of me. Still trying to hand stuff out to anybody. Wishing Merry Christmas to everybody.

Tranny Guy walked out past us and Old 10 Commandments Guy bellowed out ‘Merry Christmas Sir.’ I thought it was a little weird.

The little old lady accompanying Old 10 Commandments Guy said “I’m not sure He or She would appreciate being called Sir.” Followed by a long scowl.

Gave me a good chuckle.

Snowden aside, I have always been disappointed by people who read classic stories “in high school” but then never revisited the stuff as adults. I read “1984” and “Slaughter House 5” when I was 17, and liked them both, but it wasn’t until I re-read them at twice the age of first exposure that I was able to appreciate them properly. Hell, maybe if I read them again when I’m 80 (if I make it that far) I’ll have yet another perspective.

Our little old Eskie’s bed was too close to the window - too cold! So, Mrs. Jockey cleaned up the bedroom, and set up a nice new dogbed, just her size, on her side of the bed.

The Greyhound girl decided it was hers.

So Mrs. Jockey went out and got ANOTHER, even smaller dog bed, just for the Eskie. Guess who claimed it…

SOA is equal parts really awesome and completely ludicrous. Seeing talented actors sink their teeth into these dim-bulb biker stereotype roles is so bizarre. And seeing the Shakespearean levels of angst and drama intertwined with the turf wars over an armpit of a town that probably has 10,000 people in it, is kind of hilarious.
Yet I’ve watched every episode.

I don’t know, there were parts to “Day” that seemed a bit weak to me. Like the whole Zygon subplot, which seemed to there just to explain the whole stasis cube business and then be closed without much comment.

No, that’s not what the Zygon subplot was their for, not entirely at least.

Essentially, that served to show what the Doctor’s pushing of the Moment did to him. It served to help the War Doctor make his choice.

While elaborate, the Zygon subplot was essentially there to set up the War Doctor for making a choice.

He would have gone through with it. Except Clara ended up being there.

True and that hit me just after I’d hit the post button. But the resolution still struck me as a bit rushed, as in “Love to discuss this, but we’ve got the main plotline to take care of.”

I can’t tell if Ms Mckinley doesn’t understand that Toure was not making the implication, it’s cretins like her fan base that do… or if she’s lying and just trying to start a little echo chamber scrum against an outspoken black man.

While not wearing a white hood and using the N-word, this crap perpetuates racism through less obvious means. Which means they don’t have the balls to come out and say what they really mean, they’d prefer to be subversive and intellectually delicate about it.

Jailed Anarchist Makes Freedom Bid

Lawyers for Gerald Koch asked U.S. District Judge John F. Keenan in a motion filed Friday to release the 24-year-old college philosophy student from New York. Koch’s silence shows he has no intention of testifying in the future, the motion said. Koch’s lawyers said they believe the grand jury is investigating a 2008 bombing in Times Square, which targeted an armed forces recruiting center and caused no injuries. Koch is not a target of the investigation.
….
Koch has denied having “meaningful knowledge” of the crime. But he has refused to testify, claiming that grand juries such as the one in Manhattan are used to silence and surveil activist communities.

Fourth resignation from Turkey’s ruling AK Party
Although not mentioned in press reports I kinda suspect it might be related to this: Turkey ‘has Replaced Iran as Hamas’s Sponsor’

The sources said the government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has overseen the transfer of up to $250 million a year to Hamas, and particularly to its governing apparatus in Gaza.

“The money is channeled mostly through private sources, but with full coordination with Erdogan and his aides,” a source said.

Turkey has coordinated the cash transfers with Qatar, which has been hosting the Hamas leadership since its expulsion from Syria in late 2011, according to the report.

Turkey is the only NATO member to recognize Hamas. According to the Tribune’s sources, Ankara has hosted a Hamas presence, led by Salah Al Arouri, that facilitates operations and cash transfers, mostly to Judea and Samaria.

In 2012, Qatar pledged $400 million to the Hamas regime in Gaza. But the sources said most of the money failed to arrive because of Doha’s crisis with the new military-backed regime in Cairo.

The sources said Israel has urged NATO members, particularly the United States, to stop Turkish funding of Hamas. They said the Turkish support was also undermining the Palestinian Authority, which is run by the Fatah terror organization, and which has control over parts of the Jewish biblical heartland of Judea and Samaria.

Turkey was also said to have provided training to Hamas security forces. They said the Turkish training, provided by non-government elements aligned with Erdogan, was presented as an effort to enhance order in Gaza.

Turkey is…layered. Case in point: Grup Yorum, a political rock band with 8-12 core members. (‘Core’ because they are moved in and out of jail a lot.) The members have about 400 trials to their credit, and 20 or so best-selling albums. They are ‘underground’ but draw 150,000-250,000 kids to their stadium concerts. It might be. There seems to be plenty of domestic corruption but the international stuff is probably what’s really fucking them. Laundering money for Hamas pisses off the EU, US, Egypt and Israel. Not delivering all the money they’re supposed to pisses off UAE and Iran. I’d really like to see the military step in and restore Ataturk’s vision for the country but I doubt that’s possible anymore.

A Farsi word but universal understanding. So much of the world boils down to “don’t fuck with the money.” Poor black people can kill each other in droves and nobody cares but a shooting in an upscale mall or white suburban school? That’s a big deal. Ethnic cleansing and civil war in Africa? Help ain’t coming unless there oil or mineral rights to be had.
