Clara has been left by the Doctor twice. Each time, it rips my heart out.

The Silence from Series 6 were a schismatic splinter (Think Al-Qaeda). The main group, the Church of the Silence, allied with the Doctor on Trenzalore. The Doctor is leading the Silence there against everyone else.

Manly nothing. I cried.

That wasn’t near as good as the rest of Series 7 & the 50th.

My big gripe was how poorly Clara was treated. Although things also seemed a bit rushed. Moffat was trying to wrap up so many things, it sort fell a bit flat.

Agreed, it all seemed rather contrived, an effort to compact the last 3 years into a single hour. Perhaps he didn’t want any of that leaking into Capaldi’s run, trying to start with a fresh slate. But that just left the whole thing feeling like a pile of mush, particularly with so much build-up to “Doctor who?” and Trenzalore.

It had some good concepts, and might have made a good season finale. But at the same time, the whole lead-up to the ending seemed too contrived. Then they get to the ending…and the tears started falling.

re: #8 Targetpractice

Yep.

This would have worked better as a multi-parter.

At least 2. Maybe a three parter like the end of Series 3 (Utopia, The Sound of Drums, and The Last of the Time Lords.)

10 Targetpractice  Wed, Dec 25, 2013 7:46:37pm

Even a two-parter might have worked, if not for Moffat’s decision halfway through the season that writing Amy and Rory out in the most definitive fashion possible and then barring the way to ensure no way they could be returned to the show probably wasn’t smart if you wanted to revisit the last 3 years. In a lot of ways, the Tenth got a more fitting sendoff than his successor did.

Again, got a shit-sandwich in terms of the terms from Gillan and Darvill.

That wasn’t the issue. I love the new companion.

The problem is the rushing in the episode. I would have liked it over, say, 2 episodes. It’s pace was too manic to get a good foothold.

Indeed. And while I knew the Doctor would have a card still up his sleeve, it all smacked too much of deus ex machina for my tastes. Then again, this is a series where the hero has saved the day time and again with a sonic screwdriver.

The Time Lords trying to get in makes sense.

They should have brought up the point in the episode that the crack previously sucked things in.

He should have mused about an opposite reaction.

So many shoulds, coulds, and woulds equals an episode that had a funny beginning and heart-breaking end, but everything in between was an utter trainwreck.

Yeah. First part was good until he sent Clara off. And the Climax to the end was good.

Trainwreck in the middle. Moffat’s first truly bad story.

It almost seems unfair to lead up to Time with Day, considering that was such a great story that I could rewatch again and again, and this is an episode that I’d youtube the ending from.

As usual, the truth is more nuanced than the MBF would prefer.

You comment in this book about your lack of skeptical thinking in your childhood years. Do you believe concepts like Santa Claus are harmful to children?

I genuinely don’t know the answer to that question. I do understand people when they say that you destroy the magic of childhood if you encourage too much skeptical questioning. So I’m not absolutely gung-ho for not letting children have that sort of magic. On the other hand, I think there is a greater magic in reality. You can substitute fairies and goblins, with the stars, the galaxies, and looking down a microscope. Or even just getting children to think about the astonishing fact of our existence, like how many blood vessels are in your own body, for example. I feel that you haven’t lost the magic of childhood if you get rid of Santa Claus. I don’t think you should just sit children down and say: there is no Santa Claus. I would rather say, let’s think about it, and turn it into a game. There is something cheap about magic that works just because it is magic.

I preferred the actor they got to play in the special, the supposed incarnation that fought the time war the first time round.

We’ll see, but I think the BBC may have underestimated the need to keep a younger face. Since 2005 the reincarnated series has relied on a leading actor who could appeal to the young but not too young crowd. The new guy may do quite well with the grade school audience, but I don’t know he will ever be the faddish type of leading man needed to draw in a big teenage and 20-something audience.

One thing to remember about Doctor Who is that the main figure is, intentionally, a saviour figure.

It’s one of the most explicitly religious story lines in the history of television, but cast in a secular worldview, if that makes sense.

Thus not only does the Doctor save worlds, he saves them on Christmas day.

This special was trying to be way too many things at once.

Resolution of close to a dozen storylines in an hour’s time and finding out that almost ALL of them were part of a grand plan that was essentially explained in a single scene didn’t sit completely right with me either. Some of this stuff absolutely demanded a full fleshing-out process.

83 freetoken  Thu, Dec 26, 2013 2:28:14am

re: #82 RadicalModerate

I got the feeling that the BBC wants to reboot the series again and take it in a new direction. Maybe to appeal to younger audiences, like it originally was.

The resolution to the Silence and to the crack deserved their own episodes, as each were major story lines in previous seasons. To suddenly offer up the Silence as being a religious sect that was split away from a larger group is a plot point that went by way too quickly.

I did like the part where at the Christmas dinner that the family had on their TV the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special - sort of a product placement for their own item.

In less than a week, we’ll have to start using 2014.

When I think about 2050 (no doubt I won’t be here), it’s sort of like looking at 2000 when I was still in my 20s, still pretty far off and not worrisome. Yet, my g-grandson will only be 40 yrs old, and his dad 59, the same age I was in 2000.

The last 36 yrs are half of my life. Now, things like cell phones, computers, etc. don’t seem so fantastic, but in 1977, when we still had some black and white TVs around and landline phones were standard in homes, when most offices still used typewriters and 10 key adding machines, it seems technology has taken on a life of its own these days—and it has. I saw many occupations changing over my lifetime and people had to change, too, or they were left by the wayside, sometimes kicking and screaming. I see the same thing happening culturally, and in the Republican Party.

The Republicans are being left behind in modern cultural and social thought, and they don’t even know it.

My Chinese students have the false impression — from TV shows and movies, I suppose — that every American has at least one gun, and that we are usually packing heat whenever we go out. This impression is so pervasive in China that some parents won’t let their kids study in the USA, for fear they might get shot. I’ve tried to dissuade them from this notion, using my family as an example. I think the last member to have kept a firearm in the house was my great-great-great-grandfather, who was a farmer in New Jersey. HIs son moved to Manhattan, and all the descendants ever after were gun-free (save for military service).

So, I am perplexed when I hear that some folks have not one, but entire collections of firearms at home.

Well, I’m of the mind that these kind of incidents indicate criminal irresponsibility. I wish more prosecutors would start charging these people, but it appears that for now at least the “right” of someone to carry a gun is more important than what happens when someone is “accidentally” killed. I’m a firm believer that these incidents are not accidents at all, but examples of why we should have more regulations.

I wonder, as a result of so many of these “accidental” killings, if it prompts the gun owners to rid themselves of their weapons or check the behavior of those they invite into their homes? I suppose even losing a child doesn’t change the behavior of far too many. As a mother, grandmother, great-gmother, it simply baffles me to no end.

I’m reminded of the taxi driver scenes from Rush Hour 3.

Texas hospital forbids husband of brain-dead, pregnant wife to remove her from life support

When Erick Munoz found his wife, Marlise, unconscious and unresponsive on the kitchen floor in November, she was 14 weeks pregnant. Doctors suspect she had a pulmonary embolism — a blood clot that travels to the lungs — and are unsure how long the fetus went without oxygen and nutrients.

Seriously? You know, maybe if she was at 36 weeks and for some reason they didn’t want to remove the fetus surgically —but 14 weeks?

REALLY?

Besides treating the body as an incubator, it’s just creepy.

The body had been deprived of oxygen for an hour.

REALLY?

Are living wills going to be amended now to include pregnancy clauses?

Anti-Santa campaigns heat up in Turkey as Christmas arrives

The Istanbul University branch of a group called Anatolia Youth Association (AGD) released an illustration of a Muslim youth punching Santa Claus in the face and announced that it would make a press statement against Christmas on Dec. 26 in Istanbul.

“As in recent years, Santa Claus will not be coming to Şirinevler since he is nothing to do with our traditions and our culture,” muhtar Galip Karayiğit said in the statement. “[Turk legend character] Dede Korkut will come to our houses again, and will teach our children that they did not come into this world for pleasure, that they came to distribute justice.”

It’s time to decriminalize marijuana completely.

I admit, it is hard for me to feel sorry for someone who consistently flouts the law when they’re trafficking or peddling hard drugs, committing felonies. And I’d think they got away with a lot of it in between arrests (we don’t know, for instance, how many times these examples were arrested, and how many cases were not prosecuted for whatever reason because Will doesn’t provide the info). If they’re too stupid, or arrogant, to accept a much lesser sentence for a felony offense, I have no sympathy at all for these miscreants. I’m not saying they should get life sentences, of course not, but over-prosecuting and these kinds of “plea deals”, embroidered w/threats, should be stopped.

Enough meth (to fill a couple of hands) can do irreparable harm to individuals and families, BTW.

Besides, the Republicans initiated the “War on Drugs” and also mandatory minimums. A couple of other things Will doesn’t mention.

I’ve mentioned before how stupid HR managers are on the average. They are nothing however compared to the insect mentalities who work for them. I recently sent a fax to the HR department of a DFW metroplex business. I wasn’t sure it had gone through since they didn’t email me a confirmation. I called to confirm that it had gotten there. All I could get from the receptionist was that they didn’t take applications over the phone, which was not the subject of my call. It seems that DFW businesses provide this as a stock response to all HR calls, no matter what the subject might be, and they’re usually pretty rude about it.
“Hi, I’m across the street and I noticed that your building is on fire. I called the Fire Department but they’re going to take some time to get here.”
“We DON’T take applications over the phone and certainly not for the Fire Department.”
“That’s not why I called…”
“This is the HR department. Please call back and try to get the right office next time.”
“But your other offices aren’t in the same building.”
“We can provide credit and employment references, even though you don’t seem like a responsible person, but we cannot take an application over the phone.”
“Okay, who the fuck hired a moron like you to work there?”

While you can never go wrong underestimating the level of stupid when it comes to interaction with the public you guys have to know that the vast majority of this crap is initiated by management as policy. The drones don’t deviate from the script because to do so makes life very nasty and could be a firing offense in many cases, one because it might bring about some noise within the management ranks and they’d just assume not hear about it and for the most point, you’ll simply go away and stew. This allows stores to ignore the day to day outrage and go back to selling you crap because 9 times out of 10, you’ll be back next week to shop again. Does this excuse the behavior that set you off to begin with? No. yet the truth is, very few companies give a crap about customer service these days and the reason why is that most folks would rather save .25 on the price of a product on everything in the store rather than deal with a company that trains and employs people that know their inventory and are customer based.

The thing is that HR mostly handles bureaucratic tasks and some HR simply don’t care about anything beyond those tasks. They don’t get any bonuses or rewards based on how well the store does and no HR person is ever going to be named Employee of the Month. So many of them just don’t care about what goes on outside of their cubicle. What they forget is that if the store’s employees anger many customers, the store will have no business and when it closes the HR person won’t have a job anymore.

BTW, for my own amusement can you elaborate on Target’s response to your letter? Especially the ‘metric fuck ton of shit’ that landed on the poor-grade store.

About two years ago I walked out back to the alley to put out a bag of trash. I noticed a broken power line dangling down. I went in and called AEP and told them about it. Our power was still on and everything seemed to be working. The wire wasn’t arcing or anything.

About 15 minutes later an AEP service truck pulls up, Guy looks up at the wire and says it shouldn’t be a big deal. However, he looked down the alley and saw many tree branches around the wires and told me, that is a big problem and their policy is whenever they are out on a service call and see branches in amongst the wires, they have to take them down.

Off went the power for the whole block (one side of the street) and out came the tree service trucks. Power was out for like 5 hours as they cleaned everything away from the lines.

I felt real bad knowing that my call cut everyone’s power for a whole evening. They finished up about 10:30 that night and on came the power. Luckily it was late spring, not too hot or cold…but still. Oh well. Doing my duty I guess.

re: #170 ObserverArt

Not your fault; those service guys are trained to look for any “obstructions” to wires, and they are usually the ones who report them, not residents, for the most part.

Besides, not having trees around means you’re going to pay a higher electric bill. There’s a reason houses used to be built w/porches and have trees surrounding them—kept the house cooler. Now, most developers just clear cut old growth and plant a couple of Bradford Pears or some other small tree that are so fragile you can lose them in a stiff wind. Builders don’t even put attic fans into tract houses anymore.

One thing I still can’t understand, in this day & age on online shopping:

WHY DO PEOPLE CAMP OUT FOR DAYS, whether it is for Black Friday or the latest iPhone?

I know that corporations like to do this to stir up frenzy for their products but why do so many people fall for it? They can’t all be paid shills.

I can see the advantages of being able to see the x-rays without having to look up, maybe even the filming capabilities so that the patient can see what they are getting. I haven’t used any kind of HUD so I’m not too sure about it, but I would imagine that the surgeon is 100% comfortable with it.

Yep. And they have been filming surgery procedures since the invention of film. They are used as training and examples of procedures (both my open heart surgeries were filmed). These fucking people have gone over the edge. There have been phone taps since there have been fucking phones, before that it was telegraph taps. Before there was NSA surveillance there were cops and agents with telephoto lenses watching a suspects every move. There were plants and moles digging up intel from inside orgs. Snowden’s right that people growing up today will have less privacy than their parents.

What he left out is that the parents have decided to make their kids’ lives an open book - posting every photo and detail (not matter how private or intimate or embarassing) on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media, and with the way that people simply don’t understand their own privacy settings, have allowed anyone and everyone to know what their kids’ business is all about.

But government has been trying to spy on people since well forever.

The Bible has its own spy stories. You’ve got Lot going into Sodom. You’ve got Joshua and spies going into Israel to see what the locals are up to, etc.

And there’s a long historical record of spies trying to get details about anything and everything (corporate and national espionage).

We’re supposed to tremble that the US is doing this?

Oh wait, it’s Snowden, so yes. Yes, we’re supposed to tremble at the US spying, but doing so from the comfort of Russia, which is far more invasive and insidious in their spycraft, hostility to civil and human rights, including going after journalists and rival politicians (both inside and outside government), and jailing critics of the government, along with hostility to free speech - free speech including political speech to criticize the government (see Pussy Riot).

Merry ex-Xmas, Lizards! It was a quiet Christmas in the Jockey home this year. Just the four of us, not many presents, but a nice big dinner, prepared by the older boy and me.

Christmas Eve, my sister sent out an email to the family, that Dad, who’s 95, was feeling down. This year’s been tough, losing a number of old friends, and this fall, his younger brother. And his memory is going - he can’t remember what happened a few minutes ago, and I think he feels like his past is disappearing, starting with the present and working back. She asked if we could send him a message, maybe a Christmas memory, help him out of his funk.

I had written a 3-page reminiscence of Christmases growing up, so I forwarded that to him. They printed it out for him, and read it, and it made him happy. A little while later, he read it again, and it made him happy again. I talked to him last night, and he sounded good, in good spirits, and “present”, if you know what I mean.

It made my Christmas better knowing that I may have helped Dad remember the happy times when all 6 of us kids were young and all.

Old age is like a bad joke that the universe plays on us, before the lights go out, slowly taking away who we thought we were. I hope I’m giving my kids memories they will want to share with me when I need it.

Snowden = MacGuffin.

The specific nature of a MacGuffin is typically unimportant to the overall plot. The most common type of MacGuffin is an object, place or person. However, a MacGuffin can sometimes take a more abstract form, such as money, victory, glory, survival, power, love, or even something that is entirely unexplained, as long as it strongly motivates key characters within the structure of the plot.

Sounds about right.

244 lawhawk  Thu, Dec 26, 2013 9:30:44am

re: #239 Pie-onist Overlord

He’s parsing how many documents he got versus what Snowden actually took.

Government may be claiming 1.7 million discrete documents were taken, and Greenwald may be claiming to have received only a fraction of that number, but the numbers aren’t at odds.

It only shows just how much of a tool Greenwald is, and how much he keeps trying to insulate himself from Snowden all while using Snowden to further his own agenda.

Moreover, Snowden’s actions are espionage. No more. No less. He stole classified information, means, data, and gave them to persons not authorized to have them. It’s criminal. And each document taken could amount to an individual charge.

Life in prison for espionage wouldn’t be out of order, but 30 years in max security with limited Internet access is certainly a reasonable prison sentence.

But Greenwald will pound on the table for as long as he can until the law eventually catches up with Snowden.

I saw an opinion piece yesterday that reminded me of the last time a long hard look was taken at the FBI and NSA. The Church committee. The argument for a similar public review is clearly called for. Back then the committee issued a warning about the NSA that reads prescient today.

en.wikipedia.org

In the need to develop a capacity to know what potential enemies are doing, the United States government has perfected a technological capability that enables us to monitor the messages that go through the air. Now, that is necessary and important to the United States as we look abroad at enemies or potential enemies. We must know, at the same time, that capability at any time could be turned around on the American people, and no American would have any privacy left such is the capability to monitor everything—telephone conversations, telegrams, it doesn’t matter. There would be no place to hide.

If this government ever became a tyrant, if a dictator ever took charge in this country, the technological capacity that the intelligence community has given the government could enable it to impose total tyranny, and there would be no way to fight back because the most careful effort to combine together in resistance to the government, no matter how privately it was done, is within the reach of the government to know. Such is the capability of this technology.

I don’t want to see this country ever go across the bridge. I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return.[9][10][11]

I saw an opinion piece yesterday that reminded me of the last time a long hard look was taken at the FBI and NSA. The Church committee. The argument for a similar public review is clearly called for. Back then the committee issued a warning about the NSA that reads prescient today.

Communications technology is not going to go away, and it is not going to bring tyranny to America. Electing candidates who lack the intelligence and moral direction to use technology properly will.

We cannot uninvent the NSA. We can vote to control it, and even then we will never know for certain that it is effectively controlled. That’s the price of Netflix On Demand and a lot of Twitter followers.

AFAIK our traditional protections apply well to new technologies. Probable cause. Relevance to an investigation. Nothing without a warrant and or probable cause. These protections should be assumed to apply up front rather than applied and let the courts stop an agency years later.

Unfortunately my poll on whether domestic metadata collection that is not related to an investigation drew far too few votes to cite. I am firmly in the camp that the relevance standard is an essential protection moving forward.

I would agree, with the following caveat: it’s much harder to delineate (especially to the not-technically-inclined) what “plain view” means in the context of electronic communications.

Well-reasoned controls will help, but we have no way to know that the controls (laws) are being observed. For that matter we have no way of knowing they are not rendered inoperative by other laws. Think FISA court. Think Ollie North.

This happened about three hours ago.

Last night I was Hulu-binging on “Wrecked: Life in the Crash Lane” about a Chicago auto towing company. It’s probably much less scripted than most of the reality shows, and I just enjoy watching how they manage to get some of the cars / truck recovered.

There are a bunch of insurance agents working off their Christmas dinners today I’m sure.

re: #213 lawhawk

I had a gnarly experience in the Finger Lakes near Cooperstown a few years back. It was in the fall, pitch-black and extremely dense fog, creeping along at 10 mph, with no other cars out. High-beams were useless. Had to worry just as much about going off the road as something hitting me, but we had to keep going precisely because of the possibility of being rear-ended by someone else.

I’ve had that a few times myself. It’s the worst feeling in the world, you can’t see to drive safely, but at the same time you can’t stop or get too slow for fear of what’s behind you. That’s where the nearest exit or pull-out area becomes my best friend.

A Christianity tolerant of other religions is just no Christianity at all. (J. Gresham Machen)

When we won’t tolerate one another in terms of culture, color, and religion we make our lives a hell right here. I like to think of heaven and hell as earthly concepts, created or not by men.

A pastor that seeks to encourage hell on earth with intolerance is no Christian at all.

I just about plowed into an old woman a couple of years ago because she suddenly slowed down when a semi drove by going the other way and kicked up a pile of snow. The road ahead of her was straight as an arrow, there were no vehicles behind the semi for a couple of hundred metres and the roads themselves were not overly slippery.

Her stupidity just about caused the accident she was afraid of.

I got the gift of (most likely) $2000 worth of body damage on Christmas Eve. I was stopped at the light, and the guy in the Lexus SUV got impatient and clipped my right back end.

He literally offered me $700 cash money to not get the cops involved. Based on what little I heard between him and the responding officer, sounds like Moneybags had an expired insurance card. The phrase “My wife handles this stuff” was uttered at one point.

Unfortunately, since this is NJ, my insurance is probably going up even though it wasn’t my fault.

Sudden blindness can scare the everloving crap right out of you. I remember driving in the worst rainfall ever, when we’d driven up to Santa Rosa to pick up our Golden from the breeder. Coming back through Marin on 101, the skies opened up. Every so often, a car next to us would hit so much water that the spray onto the windshield completely overwhelmed the wipers for a second or two - the longest seconds I’d ever experienced.

It was all I could do to do nothing.

Wow, I had no idea Tony Snow was such a jerk.

Nobody ever ennobled a people with a lie or restored stolen dignity through fraud. Kwanzaa is the ultimate chump holiday — Jim Crow with a false and festive wardrobe. It praises practices — “cooperative economics, and collective work and responsibility” — that have succeeded nowhere on earth and would mire American blacks in endless backwardness.

It is tough not to slam on the brakes, but experience makes it easier.

Although I tend to avoid it now, I used to drive out to clients during any type of weather and frequently found myself experiencing temporary whiteout conditions. I learned to anticipate the situation and back off from any cars ahead of me before the snow got kicked up.

I also learned to follow semis during heavy snowstorms. Their height gives then an advantage I guess.

Oh, I’m sure this is one of the reasons that Greenwald is… well… cranky.

Alan Derschowitz:

“As far as Greenwald is concerned, he’s an ideologue. I don’t think he would have revealed this information if it had been critical of Venezuela or Cuba or the Palestinian Authority. You know, he doesn’t like America. He doesn’t like Western democracies. He’s never met a terrorist he didn’t like. So he’s a very hard-left ideologue that uses this to serve his political agenda not simply to reveal information in a neutral way. That makes him very different from WikiLeaks, I think.”
