The Incredible Hulk #102 - “Big Premiere Issue” (April 1968)

Hulk, with deus ex machina
Arts • Views: 28,109

I haven’t posted one of these in a while, but we still have hundreds of vintage comics yet unseen in the Lizard Collection crypt. Tonight’s item is the “Big Premiere Issue” of The Incredible Hulk, featuring a great Hulk-transformation montage drawn by two Marvel artists, Marie Severin and Frank Giacoia, with lettering by Sam Rosen and Morrie Kuramoto. This copy looks almost new, like many of the books in our collection.

It’s numbered “102” because this series carries over from Tales to Astonish, in which the Hulk was sharing a book with the Sub-Mariner, because let’s face it, sharing anything with the Hulk never works out.

In this storyline, the Hulk has been transported to Asgard by Loki, that trickster. He’s a prankster, Loki. A series of incomprehensible events occurs, followed by a big fight. The Hulk gets killed, then Odin brings him back to life.

We’re talkin’ full-on deus ex machina here, people.

Ah, for the simpler times of The Incredible Hulk.

Now? Now they have The Incredible Hulk, Red Hulk, She-Hulk, Red She-Hulk, and Son of Hulk.

It’s not pretty.

Well, it goes a long way in explaining The Hulks attitude toward Loki.

Not to mention the 31 different flavors of X-Men line-ups, splinter groups, individual titles, alternate universe titles, etc, etc.

Meanwhile Deadpool just adds another dialogue box for each new split personality.

The toy remote control car I bought for my g-grandson is already broken. And I just got batteries for it today (my g-son stole the rechargables I had bought, for his xbox controller). Made in China, of course. It’s going back to the store (I lost the receipt in all the bustle) and they’d better give me a store credit. Bought the other g-grandson one, also.

The car refused to move after about 10 times. Looks like this but w/a smaller r.c. Image: Maisto-Chevrolet-Camaro-SS-RS-Remote-Control-Car-P13867209.jpg

Toys are just a real waste of money and resources. Next year it’s clothes.

There’s a great bicycle touring book available on Kindle for only $3.99, and proceeds* go to Adventure Cycling, a bicycle touring and route-mapping organization.

Spokesongs: Bicycle Adventures on Three Continents

I actually caught that photo right at the moment when the setting sun was at a perfect angle to illuminate the flower while leaving the background in semi-darkness. I saw the flower sort of glowing as I was walking by, and pulled out my iPhone just in time.

Depends on the toys. My older daughter still has the 3 foot tall Raggedy Ann doll I got for her second Christmas. She is 36 now, so the doll is 34.

She was probably afraid of it for the first 12 years or so.

i was likely to take my toys apart to try and figure out how they worked

one day i asked for a ‘tiny tears’ doll, since i wanted to disembowel it to figure out how the tears mechanism functioned. of course my parents had a fit since i was a boy and it was the early 60s, but they bought me the doll, which i promptly disassembled

after that they had my game figured out. they bought be a bunch of building blocks and told me “here, buster, this is all you’re gonna get from now on. let’s see you try and take those apart”

A good woman is “hard to find. Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ‘em. Look, you wait till they get to be about 20 years old, they only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You gotta marry these girls when they’re 15 or 16, they’ll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that, of course.” — Speaking at Sportsmen’s Ministry in Georgia in 2009.

Listening to Robertson’s pearls of “wisdom” give me the impression that he’s much like most male wingnuts, namely pining for something that never was and preaching values that went out of style with bell bottoms. Not much of what he’s saying we haven’t heard from the likes of Bryan Fischer or Newt Gingrich.

Alabama lawmaker will introduce bill defending ‘Duck Dynasty’s’ Phil Robertson

State Sen. Jerry Fielding’s (R) bill states in part that Robertson, who was benched following homophobic and racially-fueled statements to GQ, “should not be penalized in any way for practicing freedom of speech, but should be celebrated as a hero for courageously revealing his self-truth and Christian ideals in a world that can be unkind towards those with a conservative mind-set.”

Fuck you Jerry.

From what I understand marrying girls off in their teens was somewhat common in the south until after WWII. So there is cultural history in play there.

58 Eclectic Cyborg  Thu, Dec 26, 2013 6:38:42pm

re: #30 Charles Johnson

That’s what the entire right wing media machine immediately defended.

A few things about that:

- Phil Robertson started dating his wife when she was 14 and he was 18. They married two years later

- Biblically, it was very common for much older men to marry younger women. Think men in their mid to late 20s marry girls age 13-17. It is commonly accepted that Mary was around 14 or 15 when she gave birth to Jesus. This was of course, in large part due to the fact that lifespans were much shorter back then so hitting the key fertility window for girls was very important.

- In the South it is WAY more common for women to get married and start having kids young than in the North. I’ve known few girls/women down here who haven’t had a baby by the time they are 25. Several women I went to school with in Canada are still without kids and over 30. I can’t even think off the top of my head of any women I know in my age range (I’m 32) who are still single. I guess Christianity has a lot do with it, but down here for the most part being single past a certain age is simply considered “improper”.

So, to sum up, I think there are a number of historical, religious and regional influences behind what Phil said here.

Also, please don’t take this to mean I agree with him. I don’t. By his logic my wife and I were ancient when we got married (we were 25 and 26, respectively).
