What the Right Wing Machine Lined Up to Defend: “You Gotta Marry These Girls When They’re 15 or 16”

Nadir
Wingnuts • Views: 31,381

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty. The man the entire right wing media machine mobilized to defend in the past two weeks.

A good woman is “hard to find. Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ‘em. Look, you wait till they get to be about 20 years old, they only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You gotta marry these girls when they’re 15 or 16, they’ll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that, of course.” — Speaking at Sportsmen’s Ministry in Georgia in 2009.

Repost from previous thread:

From what I understand marrying girls off in their teens was somewhat common in the south until after WWII. So there is cultural history in play there.

/Not defending, just explaining. There are plenty of good reason why a marriage between a teenage girl and an older man is not an equal partnership.

That’s more or less exactly the point.

The more I learn about him, the more I realize that his fan club hasn’t the first fucking clue who they’re defending. Or they do and they agree wholeheartedly with him. I’m not quite sure which I find more disagreeable.

Reposted from downstairs:

A few things about that:

- Phil Robertson started dating his wife when she was 14 and he was 18. They married two years later

- Biblically, it was very common for much older men to marry younger women. Think men in their mid to late 20s ( or even early 30s) marrying girls age 13-17. It is commonly accepted that Mary was around 14 or 15 when she gave birth to Jesus. This was of course, in large part due to the fact that lifespans were much shorter back then so hitting the key fertility window for girls was very important.

- In the South it is WAY more common for women to get married and start having kids young than in the North. I’ve known few girls/women down here who haven’t had a baby by the time they are 25. Several women I went to school with in Canada are still without kids and over 30. I can’t even think off the top of my head of any women I know down here in my age range (I’m 32) who are still single. I guess Christianity has a lot do with it, but down here for the most part being single past a certain age is simply considered “improper” by many folks.

So, to sum up, I think there are a number of historical, religious and regional influences behind what Phil said here.

Also, please don’t take this to mean I agree with him. I don’t. By his logic my wife and I were ancient when we got married (we were 25 and 26, respectively).

I just saw two articles on CNN, about a poll they released today.

In one, it says,

“Two-thirds of those questioned said the current Congress is the worst in their lifetime, with 28% disagreeing.”

In the other, it says,

“Democrats have lost their advantage and Republicans now have a slight edge in the battle for control of Congress, according to a new national poll.”

So, 2/3 think it’s the worst Congress of their lives, and yet the Republicans, who are RESPONSIBLE for it being the worst Congress, are preferred?

What the fuck is WRONG with people?!?!

He’s not talking about 50 year olds, but he is talking about young men who are several years older than the girls they are dating. If the men were dating 20 year old women, they were presumably older than that and therefore a 15 or 16 year old girl is significantly younger. A gap of a few years at those ages is way more significant than say, a 30 year old marrying a 40 year old.

If I had to guess, I’d say the 13% are the idjits who approve of the present gridlock and inability to pass even basic bills without partisan fighting because, in their minds, a government that can’t do its job is the next best thing to no government at all.

18M / 14F. That breaks the basic rule of (Male age / 2) + 7 = youngest woman you should ever consider dating. Marrying someone at that age, or close to it, it’s basically taking someone who is at the age where they are discovering what they can be and suddenly BOOM, their entire life horizon is changed to “Housekeeper / babymaker”. A 16 Y/O doesn’t have anything like the life experience to make these types of choices.

Of course, I’ve got a horrible track record when it comes to relationships, so take it with a grain of salt.

That’s effectively what my interpretation of his “advice” is, that a guy should seek out a girl when she’s 15/16, because at that age she’s not thinking of the future, not making plans, she’s still too young to be really preparing for anything but the last years of high school. Makes the job of putting her in the kitchen that much easier, when she has no ambitions of her own or a taste of life outside of school and marriage.

It’s all about perception.

The Dems are also getting hit over Obamacare’s problems:

It was bound to happen: Canceled health plans are the new stars of anti-Obamacare ads.

Americans for Prosperity, one of the most powerful tea party groups in the country, is launching TV ads Thursday against two first-term House Democrats that blame the health care law for taking away health insurance people already had.

The group is spending more than $600,000 on the ads against Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s 8th District and Ann McLane Kuster of New Hampshire’s 2nd District. And it’s promising to spend a lot more on TV, radio and digital media in the coming months to highlight the disruption it says the law is causing in people’s lives.

Unlike other tea party groups, Americans for Prosperity stayed out of the push to defund Obamacare — the campaign that led to the government shutdown — arguing that the law won’t be repealed until opponents of the law have stronger numbers in Congress. The group says this will be part of a broader campaign that will target other vulnerable House Democrats as well as Senate Democrats in close races.

“We have said all along that repealing Obamacare is a long-term effort, and these ads are a continuation of that effort,” said AFP president Tim Phillips. The message of the ads, he says, is that “it doesn’t have to be this way. It can be changed.”

And yes, I know that Charles and David Koch finance AFP. I’m posting a report, not an favorable editorial.

Since we’re already talking about duck hunting, here’s something more about guns and the South:

Santa brings South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley a Beretta PX4 Storm, was he that good to you?

The fat man in the red suit who rides in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer made a stop at South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s home last night. What he left the GOP governor was quite the gift: a Beretta PX4 Storm.

Haley showed off what arguably has to be her favorite present on social media: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“Our family had a wonderful Christmas together! I must have been good Santa gave me a Beretta PX4 Storm,” wrote Haley.

Indeed. She must have been good.

Spoiler alert!

There is no Santa Clause. The gift actually came from her husband, Michael.

Drawing Stuff on the Pope’s Face

this desperate need to brand and tattoo the non-conforming among us, our near-biological urge for all things to fit into their sacred place within The Very Important Culture Wars, all this only bears witness to the inability of Francis to be contained to the world — a happy handicap shared by every Catholic who wakes up and decides to be Catholic. The need to make something out of Francis is evidence that we cannot make head or tail of him.

In truth, I have little else to say besides the hope that we follow suit, all of us living lives bursting from this boring, abysmal tupperware of current culture. It is no difficult thing. We need only follow the example of our Holy Father, to become with him true sons and daughters of the Church. Being Catholic — not screwing around, really being the thing — is a panting pursuit of all the ways we become fully alive and fully ourselves. It is the liberty to be ourselves, and, in this marvelous singularity, to be wrenched from all reductions, all systems, imitations, fashions and passing fads. Let us live this Pope Francis stuff, this radical obedience that tastes like rebellion, to the point that our weary world is reduced to drawing what they want us to be on our faces.

I’m really glad to hear that. I suspect that is FAR from the norm in the music industry. Too many cases like Beiber’s end up that way because either the agent effectively cuts off the star from his family in interests of “appearances” or, in far worse circumstances, the family start pushing their kid into bad situations just to keep the gravy train rolling. Which is what makes me happy to hear that, in this instance, neither seems to be the case. Hopefully that means that, once the pop stardom has faded away, he can look forward either to a life of normalcy or a career as an adult in another form of entertainment.

Alan Dershowitz rips Edward Snowden: ‘We have an absolute right’ to spy on other countries

“He could have easily gone on 60 Minutes, and disclosed the existence of the program without disclosing the contents, some of which is extremely damaging to our national security,” Dershowitz told Hardball guest host Michael Smerconish, arguing that he could have released the information he compiled while working at the agency in a classified debriefing, instead of going to the Post and The Guardian.

In particular, Dershwoitz slammed Snowden for bringing to light the agency’s surveillance activities against other countries, saying they “raise some questions, but [were] not unconstitutional.

“We have an absolute right under our Constitution to listen to the prime minister of Israel, to listen to the chancellor of Germany,” Dershowitz said. “That is not a constitutional issue, and yet he disclosed — or people working on his behalf — the fact that we are using surveillance abroad, outside the country, where the Constitution does not apply.”

Dershowitz also argued that Snowden failed his criteria for criminal civil disobedience because of his departure from U.S. soil, and because his actions were not “a last resort,” a point Gellman contested.

‘Men are stuck’ in gender roles, data suggest

C.J. Duron, 6, has gravitated toward Barbies, Disney princesses and pink since he was a toddler. In a blog and book, his mother, Lori Duron, chronicles the worries the family faces concerning gender stereotypes. (Liz O. Baylen, Los Angeles Times / December 7, 2013)

I have to disagree to a point with the article, though I’m sure it’s more anecdotal on my part than actual science, and that’s the acceptance of masculinity in women. It’s something that we as a society have accepted more and more in recent decades, but is still really only seen as acceptable early on in life. In much of my experience, the idea is still that by a time a girl begins the transition into an adult, she’s to have shed all that and begun “accepting” herself as a woman. That women who are still very masculine are acceptable in certain occupational fields, while most of the rest still draw the conclusion that a masculine acting woman is either a lesbian or trying to act like a man to attain acceptance in male-dominated occupations.

170 GlutenFreeJesus  Thu, Dec 26, 2013 10:36:14pm

Phil is telling guys in their 20s to find a 15-16 yo girl because at that age, they are more likely to believe the bullshit coming out of a guy’s mouth. To him, younger = more obedient. A single woman in her 20s is more likely to know better.

His line about asking the parents for permission is just his way of trying to weasel out of saying out loud that rape is a-ok with him.

You’re on to it. Guys like Robertson want someone young and naive like that so they can “train” her to be the wife they want. I’ve heard that more than once. When I was 16, a 20 yr old guy seemed too old to me. Yes, I married young, at 18, but he was 19, but that was over 50 yrs ago, too, not uncommon then for young couples to get married right out of HS.

Robertson, however, was 4 yrs his wife’s senior and he was already attending college. And how does a couple both attend college (as they claim they did) while they’re having children one after another? I think the proof is what we see here: they were both piss-poor students.

Would you date a 9th grader if you were a college freshman? In some stories about them, it’s said they “went to college” together. I doubt that, unless they meant she started college after they had already been married 2 yrs and he was in grad school. The oldest son is Alan, age 47—Phil is 67, 4 yrs older than Kay, so you do the math.

If he picked this girl out when she was 14, when was he doing all that hell raising he likes to talk about? When she was busy having babies year after year while he was in college? Obviously, she already knew her place. BTW, the oldest son Alan is a preacher and he joined the show to cash in this year, so you can see where this is going.

These people hide their greed and reactionary politics under their religion. This is the phenomenon known as “prosperity gospel” and it’s what draws a lot of people to these people. They’re rich, they’re religious, they’re “country”, and hey, don’t you just want to be like them?

This has been a fortuitous development. re: #169 Targetpractice

I’m not sure I know what you mean by women being “masculine”? Want to explain that? What exactly makes a woman “masculine”?

Who gets to define “feminine” and “masculine”?

I think the article is pretty spot-on in a few assumptions: that men are seen as more valuable than women, and that to treasure what girls or women do, or do the work that women are typically assigned is emasculating, and that men will not give up higher paying jobs for “women’s” jobs which generally pay much less. The latter, of course, meaning higher up on the pay scale, since most lower paying jobs are not affected—all burger flippers get paid the same, regardless of what sex they are.

At the same time, gay couples make more money than hetero couples (and education and children have a lot to do with that). Lesbian couples, however, make slightly more than gay male couples, and I don’t think those lesbians are out there busting rocks, anymore than gay men are.

Gay Couples More Educated, Higher-Income Than Heterosexual Couples

People who have no idea what it really means to be a man in modern society or to be a patriot in a changing world are often the ones who cling to (often outdated) external symbols asociated with the terms: guns, beards, trucks, flag lapel pins, etc., and throw the biggest hissy fits when they see those symbols under “attack”.

“A shooting spree Thursday night (Dec. 26) in Lafourche Parish left four people dead, including the suspected gunman, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. The dead include a Lafourche Parish councilman’s wife, the suspect’s wife, an Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital administrator as well as the suspect, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Lafourche Parish Councilman Louis Phillip Goaux was injured in one of the shootings, the Sheriff’s Office said.”

Tomorrow, 1.3M people will be cut from unemployment benefits. Average benefit: $300/wk.

If you’re single, or a sole breadwinner, or your partner is also unemployed, this is going to be a killer for those folks.

It’s hard to live on $300/wk but impossible to live on nothing.

In NC, if you have no children, you can’t even get on the dole. If you’ve never been unemployed for any length of time, you might not understand the depression and despair that goes with that, even to the point of inaction, of increasing self-doubt, of eroding decision-making ability. I was blacklisted in my normal occupation in the 1990s and lost everything, so I understand those feelings very well, but I survived it. It made me do a lot of reassessing of what I was going to do with the rest of my life, and it wasn’t getting back into the rat race.

Bullshit. Those creeps might have gotten their job back, losing a valuable employee to satisfy the ego of a lying young associate lawyer who fucked up his own case, but they couldn’t capture my essence. The smallish settlement I received for sexual harrassment was a bit of vindication, along with my charges of racial discrimination. The firm was forced to start hiring Black employees after the senior partner told me he never would hire a Black person because his Black clientele thought “white people are smarter”.

The blacklisting was “payback”.

I’ve been mucho ocupado hoy dia, so I’m just now getting to comment on things.

Rabbi Boteach’s comments made me realize something interesting. Though China has been for all intents and purposes Christianity-free for thousands of years, homophobia exists here, especially among the older generations. But, as far as I know, there is nothing in Buddhism, Taoism or Confucianism specifically condemning homosexuality. Yet, until recently, LGBT folks had to hide their sexuality for fear of shunning by their families and friends. According to Christian fundies, this is as it should be, but the reasons do not result from Chinese familiarity with Christianity or the Bible. It’s just a cultural thing, as the Rabbi noted.

The Communist Revolution carried with it a strong puritanical sense about sexuality of all kinds, as well. As a result, Chinese attitudes toward sexuality remained stuck in the 1950s until quite recently. As in the USA, the Chinese born after 1980 or so are much less disturbed by homosexuality than their parents and grandparents. Many are accepting of LGBT people, even among their own roommates. Several well known and well liked Chinese pop stars and actors have come out in the last several years, and their popularity has remained undiminished.

The old fogies here (the current sitting president, Xi JinPing, among them) blame Western influence, which may be partly true, but I believe it’s just a new chapter in human social evolution worldwide.

The times they are a-changing.

There’s gotta be a typo in here:

Mrs. Durant had suffered a stroke some time ago. She was 83 years old.

The news of her death has been kept from Mr. Durant, who is 95 and was hospitalized in Los Angeles three weeks ago after surgery. The historians would have observed their 68th wedding anniversary on Saturday. She was 15 and he was 28 and her teacher at the Ferrer Modern School in New York, when they met, and married, in 1913.

1913 has to be a typo, if the rest of the dates are correct they were married in 1945.

Russia was also sexually puritanical under the Soviet regime, and now that the Orthodox Church is re-ascendant under Putin, they have perpetuated a very homophobic and patriarchal view of society and sexuality.

And then there is the example of fundamentalist Hindu India, which is notorious for its disregard of women and gays.

In the end, it has little to do with the religion itself, it has a lot more to do with the degree of social backwardness.

When the civil war in Libya first broke out, I was astonished at how large Benghazi had become, as my only knowledge of the place was in conjunction with its importance as a port in World War II. At the time, I was glad that I’d read about the terrain in eastern Libya and seen photos of it, since it meant I could explain the fighting to other people.

Since the transformation of the Benghazi attack of 9/11/12 from a murderous terrorist rampage into a wingnut OUTRAGEOUS OUTRAGE!!1, I’ve found myself wishing more and more that the revolt in Benghazi had never broken out and the place had stayed an old spot on the map for me.

Lebanon is once again caught in the crossfire of the Syrian civil war. A massive car bomb went off in downtown Beirut, and there are reports of significant number of casualties, including the death of a former Lebanese minister who was also a former Lebanese Ambassador to the US.

He was an anti-Assad politician who was affiliated with the March 14 movement headed by Saad Hariri.

Mohammad Chatah, who was a senior aide to former prime minister Saad Hariri, was attending a meeting of senior leaders of the March 14 political party. The party is staunchly opposed to the regime of Bashar Assad in neighboring Syria and critical of Shiite militia and political party Hezbollah inside of Lebanon.

The blast, which targeted Chatah’s convoy, set cars on fire and sent black smoke billowing into the sky above the recently-reconstructed upscale business and zone of Beirut, close to the Intercontinental Phoenica Hotel.

Four others were killed in the explosion, which was heard across the city at 9:40 a.m. local time (2.40 a.m. ET), Lebanese medical sources said.
Chatah’s driver was among the the victims, according to Reuters, citing security sources.

A Reuters witness at the scene said Chatah’s car was “totally destroyed. It is a wreck.”

The army cordoned off the area to prevent people from getting close to the scene, where the twisted wreckage of several cars was still smoldering. The explosion appeared to be the result of the car bomb, but security officials said they had no immediate confirmation.

Hariri heads the main, Western-backed coalition in Lebanon and is engaged in bitter feuding with Hezbollah group, which is allied to Assad, who is embroiled in an increasingly brutal civil war.

Chatah was also a prominent economist and former finance minister. He also served at the IMF and was former vice governor of Banque di Liban.

The culprits remain at large, but among the likely suspects are Hizbullah and other pro-Syrian groups.

And last time I checked, quite a few liberals were opposed to Ahmadinejad speaking at Columbia U just as surely as they oppose Duck Dynasty’s Robertson.

But this has nothing to do with liberalism; it is a question of right and wrong.

Robertson and Ahmadinejad (who really shouldn’t be in the same sentence because of what each actually represents) stand athwart to history. They are from a bygone era where bigotry and hatred dominate.

Ahamdinejad was the elected/chosen leader of a repressive regime in Iran, which just so happens holds many of the same views that Robertson does - a guy from down South who is homophobic and racist. Having the elected leader of a foreign country speak isn’t on the same level as some reality tv show star, although for those who are logic challenged, this seems perfectly acceptable.

And I’ve already spent too much time trying to untangle that mess of pretzel logic.

Top Ten Things Fox Decided Will Lead To The “Wussification of America” In 2013

I can’t help but think that if everything is the wussification of American, then nothing is the wussification of America.

7. Paid Internships

On the May 18 edition of Fox & Friends Saturday, co-host Clayton Morris hosted author Ron Perlin to discuss internships and the “culture of unpaid work.” Morris asked if interns deserve money for their work, or if this demonstrates an “entitlement generation” and the “wussification of America.” [Fox News, Fox & Friends Saturday, 5/18/13]

Fun Fact: The idea that unpaid internships have become a problem has been supported in print by such ‘wusses’ as Mark Steyn and Kevin W. Williamson.

When you say something supported by National Review is ‘wussifing’, you might be a wingnut.

Germany has a regular system of paid internships, the companies get tax breaks, but the intership is accompanied by a course of studies and monitored externally.

In the case in question, “paid internship” meant the intern is paid. Steyn actually decried your example even more (sorry but I’m too close to my NYT limit for the month to click the link) as he feels that such internships limit who can ultimately get a paying job in certain fields to the top half of the middle class and the upper class. Thus such employment practices destroy social mobility, which has historically been a powerful conservative argument against redistributionism.

Note: I still think Mark Steyn is an ass who sometimes has catered to racists, but he is correct on the matter of unpaid internships in that they exploitative and socially destructive.

I was commenting on this just yesterday. Twitter, which has no history of profits, is now valued at more than $40 billion and it’s trading above $70. The IPO price was $26 and it opened at about $46.

There was crazy coin to be made on the stock, even though it hasn’t gotten into the black yet.

Facebook is in somewhat better territory financially. They’re making money on ad revenues and have monetized mobile devices faster than expected, after not having any revenue coming from that source.

Don’t think it’s quite a bubble, but the social media companies need to get back to fundamentals.

Others having issues include Groupon, which is also losing money at a prodigious rate.

I think I’ve found the ultimate in reaching for dissatisfaction over on FR. You know the cute commercial Apple did, kid appearing to be anti-social on his phone at family Christmas gathering, actually making an on-the-spot movie for them as a gift. Nice little ad.

Youtube Video

Of course somebody over on FR had to find some way to totally get offended by it and read WAY more into it than was there.

To: Excellence
I use Apple products, but the ad has very little to do with Christmas and has no reference to the birth of Jesus.

Furthermore, the family depicted looks to liberal.

Notice that they are driving a Subaru, a car almost exclusively driven by liberals.

Notice the father and the kid with the iPhone. Dad is bearded and looks like a liberal and the kid has bushy hair.

Finally, written in the snow is not “Merry Christmas” but rather “A Harris Family Holiday”

Even in closing, it says “Happy Holidays” on the screen and not “Merry Christmas.”

There was a bit more to this. Apparently the girl suffered from Sleep Apnea, and this was being done to try and remedy the problems. From some sources I’ve read she was also obese, possibly morbidly so. (which would also square with the sleep apnea) I don’t think it was a blotched surgery as such, but complications afterwards.

All surgery carries some risks, I’m not so quick to blame the staff until more info is available. Because of HIPPA requirements the hospital is very very limited in what information they can make available.

In any case, it is a horrible thing.

And all the safety regulations to make sure that power systems are reliable, road markings are consistent for interstate commerce, vehicles conform to certain safety standards, the motor fuels used are consistent and do not contain certain emissions, etc.

To be fair, said wingnuts would be against those last two points, and the ‘certain emissions’ point has been badly abused via the ethanol mandate.

My dislike for large SUVs is three-fold:
1. I see them overaggressively driven more than any other car. (With Ford F-250s a close second.)

2. Especially with polarized windows I hate being behind them since I cannot see around (or through) them to gauge traffic the way I like. I don’t watch the car ahead of me as much on the highway as watching what is 200-300 yards down the road. And all too often I anticipate and react to things before the car ahead of me does.

3. I see a lot of places where the large SUV is not needed*. It might be that the family had need for one - but one person just going to get four bags of groceries doesn’t need it. Waste of gasoline.

* - I knew one woman in Pittsburgh who owned one mainly in order to be sitting up higher and being able to see better. I also think she felt safer being in the large metal box on the highway rather than a smaller one.

The height thing can definitely be an issue, especially with so many other SUVs, minivans, etc. on the road. When I switched from minivan to sedan, I definitely noticed a difference, but it didn’t bother me. But that doesn’t require an SUV. The minivan or cross-over will give the same height advantage and better gas mileage.

Good luck trying to guess which cars are American made. Badges don’t matter.

You can have Toyotas made with US parts and assembled in the US.
You can have Chevy’s made with Canadian parts and assembled in Canada.

This sheds a bit of light on just where the cars are made (and that lumps US and Canadian production into one grouping).

And made in the USA for vehicle production means a car has at least 75% parts by value made in the US or Canada.

I never bought that screed about foreign vs American cars. Even back in the early 80s when Iacocca was saving Chrysler using it. (Mainly because we had a small Dodge/Chrysler pick-up truck in that time period - with a nice fat “Made by Mitsubishi” sticker on it.)

The main challenge was the US automakers were getting their asses kicked in terms of quality control and making cars that fit a changing market demand. They eventually did start catching up in those regards. But choosing a lower quality product for the same price point simply to help out a large American corporation from avoiding something it should be doing? No.

I support “buying local” for various economic and environmental reasons. But that effect starts to pale a bit when you try to extend “local” to apply to the entire North American continent.

Not going to be the end of what I expect to be a steady flow of bad publicity for the ACA:

Vista Workers Told Their U.S. Health Plan Fails Test

The Obama administration has told Vista volunteers and other AmeriCorps workers that their government-provided health coverage does not measure up to the standards of the new health care law, and that they may be subject to financial penalties unless they obtain insurance elsewhere.

The notice has surprised and worried workers in AmeriCorps, the federal community service program that is often described as a domestic version of the Peace Corps.

Mary Strasser, the director of AmeriCorps’ Vista program, described the changes in a bulletin to members on Dec. 16.

The coverage provided by the agency — the AmeriCorps Health Care Benefits Plan — “does not satisfy the individual responsibility requirement of the Affordable Care Act,” which takes effect on Jan. 1, Ms. Strasser said. Accordingly, she said, Vista members may be required to pay a tax penalty if they do not have other coverage and do not receive an exemption.

[…]

359 freetoken  Fri, Dec 27, 2013 8:28:36am
Abby Grosslein, a Vista member in New Orleans, said she thought it was strange that the health benefits provided by a federal agency did not meet the standards of a law adopted more than three and a half years ago. “It would be nice if the government waived the penalty because we are a federally funded program,” said Ms. Grosslein, 24, who is completing her third year of service with AmeriCorps. “It’s as if the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.”

Moreover, she said: “The Affordable Care Act has been on the books since 2010. Why are we hearing only now that our health plan is not compliant?”

Thousands of private employers and state and local government agencies have revamped their employee health plans to meet the law’s requirements. But AmeriCorps says that its members are technically not employees, and that it does not have to provide them with the “minimum essential coverage” they need to comply with the individual mandate. “There will be no changes to the AmeriCorps Health Care Benefits Plan,” Ms. Strasser wrote.

GM screwed it up is why. They opted at some point to start running Saturn plants like any other GM plant rather than their pseudo-Japanese high assured quality set-up. Oddly enough, between that and Saturn design features ossifying a bit the car went from a nearly perfect Consumer Report’s rating to a below average one.

I had a 1998(?) Saturn that I liked a lot. By the time I was looking for a car in 2005 I was not going to consider another one since their ratings and reliability of the new ones had dropped that much. So I ended up looking primarily at Subarus and considering a Mazda 626 since I had had a good experience with owning a Mazda 323 before the Saturn.

I remember that… It was the Sabaru BRAT.

Oh, and I see that the 2013 Avalanche is the last model year. Discontinued.

One of the big fall-outs from that was when all the union folk came down from Detroit to Tennessee (where the Saturn was made), they agreed to give up any seniority they had in the system, that they were all starting at day 1 in Saturn. Union was on board with that, since there was going to be a much less adversarial relationship, more of a collaboration with Management. You also got workers that were very loyal to the brand.

When they closed the Saturn line and switched it over to making other GM products, that caused a lot of problems, especially with workers coming into the system from Detroit. Sort of like when two airlines merge and they have to work out pilot seniority.

I really like my little Saturn SW2 wagon. 4 cyl 5-speed manual. Not a big car, but if I needed to haul lumber, a fair size bookcase, etc, the back seats folded down and I could slide them in. Looked real comical with my 10 ft flat aluminium bottom boat strapped to the roof racks (with canoe rail pads as bursa between the car and boat) going fishing.

: ) I’ve hauled landscaping timbers in mine, along with a number of other long items, lawn funiture, even a chair or two. And it’s not a SW but it is a 5 sp. I imagine I could haul more in one of those SWs. I’ve never driven a car for looks, but more for utility. I really need a truck, but I balk at the gas consumption of most trucks.

>Edited to reflect RBS’s post.

I don’t entirely disagree with your point, but the reason that unions formed the way they did, and have historically had an adversarial relationship with management, in the US, is essentially that the US economy and legal system are set up in such a way as to treat employees pretty shoddily.

It’s not that unions aren’t adversarial with management in other countries (in fact you could argue that this is pretty much the whole point of a union), it’s that, if you start off from the point of view that the payoff from “gains in efficiency” are going to be shared with the general employee population to some degree, you might see a bit more buy-in from those employees.

If, on the other hand, you start from the point of view that “layoffs are necessary to maximize shareholder value”, you can’t be too surprised when the staff tell you where to put your 10-phase efficiency plan.

May have to pick up a copy. The reviews are great:

As the father of two teenagers, I found this book invaluable. I’m sure other parents here can empathize when I say I shudder at the thought of the increasing presence of huge ships in the lives my children. I certainly remember the strain I caused so long ago for my own parents when I began experimenting with huge ships. The long inter-continental voyages that kept my mom and dad up all night with worry. Don’t even get me started on the international protocols when transporting perishable cargo. To think, I was even younger than my kids are now! huge ships are everywhere and it doesn’t help that the tv and movies make huge ships seem glamorous and cool. This book helped me really approach the subject of huge ships with my kids in an honest and non judgmental way. Because of the insights this book provided, I can sleep a little better and cope with the reality that I can’t always be there to protect my kids from huge ships, especially as they become adults. I’m confident that my teens, when confronted by a huge ship, are much better prepared to make wiser decisions than I did. At the very least my children certainly know that they can always come to me if they have any concerns, questions or just need my support when it comes to the topic of huge ships.

Fascinating. It goes beyond an immune response, possibly. Or maybe it will redefine the term ‘immune response’.

Although preeclampsia was once a strategic adaptation adjusting for these prospective losses, however, today novel scenarios such as artificial insemination of a donor’s sperm invoke the exact same mechanism. From the mindless perspective of the evolved woman’s proactive womb, there’s simply no way to tell this apart from rape.

So women’s bodies don’t have a ‘way to shut that whole [getting pregnant] thing down’, but they do have a way to prevent carrying it to term. Spontaneous abortion.

This x 1000. It’s technically illegal to fire people for talking about forming a union, but companies do it all the time. This is why the Republicans gummed up the process of government over Obama’s labor-related appointees - because they didn’t want anyone actually enforcing the law on employee rights.

Iran’s Turkish Gold Rush

Police reportedly discovered shoeboxes containing $4.5 million in the home of Suleyman Aslan, the CEO of state-owned Halkbank, and also arrested Reza Zarrab, an Iranian businessman who primarily deals in the gold trade, and who allegedly oversaw deals worth almost $10 billion last year alone.

The gold trade has long been at the center of controversial financial ties between Halkbank and Iran. Research conducted in May 2013 by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and Roubini Global Economics revealed the bank exploited a “golden loophole” in the U.S.-led financial sanctions regime designed to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Here’s how it worked: The Turks exported some $13 billion of gold to Tehran directly, or through the UAE, between March 2012 and July 2013. In return, the Turks received Iranian natural gas and oil. But because sanctions prevented Iran from getting paid in dollars or euros, the Turks allowed Tehran to buy gold with their Turkish lira — and that gold found its way back to Iranian coffers.

Yeah Bryan if we got to the point that all the ice in Antarctica was gone, we’d be fucked.

Franklin Institute (was there yesterday) in one of their exhibits had a fairly simple tank and model of the Statue of Liberty. You could adjust it to show the shorelines of the eastern US from the present to 16,000 years ago. It would adjust the level in the tank to show how far down the water would drop as well as displaying an overhead map showing the revised shoreline.

If you had it on modern day you also had buttons that showed the effect of melting the Greenland ice cap, the Antarctic ice cap, or both. Lady Liberty got her feet wet (or worse) real quick.

Olestra, isn’t that the fake fat that makes you crap your pants if you eat it?

The technical terms they used for it was “productive flatulence” or “anal leakage”. It was also referred to as “OIT” (Oil In Toilet).

Just was reading about it last night in The Man Who Ate Everything by Jeffery Steingarten

As usual, a Newsmax citation actually has negative credibility. I would be more likely to believe this if he had no citation at all.

I the next question is why can’t you just download a phone app that goes quack quack while displaying hunting hints and location based advertising. As it turns out the story of Duck Dynasty as free market hero is a bit more complicated. Basically you are not allowed by the government to use anything except one of those thingies you blow into. So Duck Dynasty is about succeeding in a highly regulated market that requires you to use antiquated technology so as not to kill too many ducks too fast. Basically the US government requires duck hunters to buy an expensive kazoo made with the attention to detail of a Steinway piano. Type in [Electronic Duck Call] and the free market capitalists at google added [illegal] for me so I would not be a pest and search twice.

There’s nothing for it, as modern technology is simply too effective at killing ducks for most of it to be used. You’d have the duck quotas filled in the first couple days and then the season would close, to the detriment of everyone who couldn’t get those days off.

I think my anger at SUVs taking up two compact parking slots is ENTIRELY justified.

The cure for that is to print the following in large print on a 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper and tape it to the vehicle’s rear window for everyone to see:

MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST!

1. I am an asshole and need two parking spaces.

2. I don’t know how to drive.

I used it a lot in Miami parking garages, here in Nashville only once or twice.
