New York Times Investigative Report Destroys Right Wing Myths About Benghazi Attack

“Fueled in large part by anger at an American-made video denigrating Islam”
Middle East • Views: 57,404

The right wing narrative on the attacks against the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi is now well-established. It goes something like this:

The Obama administration lied when they initially said the attack was provoked by an American-made anti-Islam video. Actually, it was a well-planned Al Qaeda terror attack that had absolutely nothing to do with the video.

Today, an in-depth investigative report published by the New York Times explores these issues and concludes that nearly everything about this right wing narrative is wrong: A Deadly Mix in Benghazi.

There are a lot of interesting details in the article, but two points are important to note:

  • Islamist groups did indeed use that anti-Muslim video as a rallying point to launch the initial attack.
  • There's no evidence that Al Qaeda or any other international terrorist organization was involved, and no evidence of meticulous planning.

Months of investigation by The New York Times, centered on extensive interviews with Libyans in Benghazi who had direct knowledge of the attack there and its context, turned up no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the assault. The attack was led, instead, by fighters who had benefited directly from NATO’s extensive air power and logistics support during the uprising against Colonel Qaddafi. And contrary to claims by some members of Congress, it was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made video denigrating Islam.

A fuller accounting of the attacks suggests lessons for the United States that go well beyond Libya. It shows the risks of expecting American aid in a time of desperation to buy durable loyalty, and the difficulty of discerning friends from allies of convenience in a culture shaped by decades of anti-Western sentiment. Both are challenges now hanging over the American involvement in Syria’s civil conflict.

There’s much more to this multi-part article, and you should, as always, read the whole thing. But it shows unequivocally that the reality in Libya is far more complex and murky than the simplistic anti-Obama talking points pushed relentlessly by the right.

UPDATE at 12/28/13 4:34:19 pm

This isn’t the first report in the New York Times that retaliation for that anti-Muslim video was a cause of the Benghazi attack, and that it was carried out by local Islamists. In October 2012, a month after the attack, the Times ran a story with reporting from Suliman Ali Zway in Libya, making these same points:

To Libyans who witnessed the assault and know the attackers, there is little doubt what occurred: a well-known group of local Islamist militants struck the United States Mission without any warning or protest, and they did it in retaliation for the video. That is what the fighters said at the time, speaking emotionally of their anger at the video without mentioning Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden or the terrorist strikes of 11 years earlier. And it is an explanation that tracks with their history as members of a local militant group determined to protect Libya from Western influence.

[…]

To those on the ground, the circumstances of the attack are hardly a mystery. Most of the attackers made no effort to hide their faces or identities, and during the assault some acknowledged to a Libyan journalist working for The New York Times that they belonged to the group. And their attack drew a crowd, some of whom cheered them on, some of whom just gawked, and some of whom later looted the compound.

The fighters said at the time that they were moved to act because of the video, which had first gained attention across the region after a protest in Egypt that day. The assailants approvingly recalled a 2006 assault by local Islamists that had destroyed an Italian diplomatic mission in Benghazi over a perceived insult to the prophet. In June the group staged a similar attack against the Tunisian Consulate over a different film, according to the Congressional testimony of the American security chief at the time, Eric A. Nordstrom.

At a news conference the day after the ambassador and three other Americans were killed, a spokesman for Ansar al-Shariah praised the attack as the proper response to such an insult to Islam. “We are saluting our people for this zeal in protecting their religion, to grant victory to the prophet,” the spokesman said. “The response has to be firm.” Other Benghazi militia leaders who know the group say its leaders and ideology are all homegrown. Those leaders, including Ahmed Abu Khattala and Mohammed Ali Zahawi, fought alongside other commanders against Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. Their group provides social services and guards a hospital. And they openly proselytize for their brand of puritanical Islam and political vision.

They profess no interest in global fights against the West or distant battles aimed at removing American troops from the Arabian Peninsula.

It’s complicated to be sure. I do give credit to the NYT for looking into what really happened and not just trying to ‘refudiate’ the Republican storyline.

Final judgement withheld, though, till I finish reading it.

I’ve been saying from the beginning, by the way, that the anti-Islam video WAS a motivating factor in the attacks, despite the right’s attempt to deny it. Early reports from Benghazi after the attack quoted militant leaders actually saying this outright.

Yeah, but this is hardly a ground breaking exclusive story.

The investigation by The Times shows that the reality in Benghazi was different, and murkier, than either of those story lines suggests. Benghazi was not infiltrated by Al Qaeda, but nonetheless contained grave local threats to American interests. The attack does not appear to have been meticulously planned, but neither was it spontaneous or without warning signs.

Mr. Abu Khattala had become well known in Benghazi for his role in the killing of a rebel general, and then for declaring that his fellow Islamists were insufficiently committed to theocracy. He made no secret of his readiness to use violence against Western interests. One of his allies, the leader of Benghazi’s most overtly anti-Western militia, Ansar al-Shariah, boasted a few months before the attack that his fighters could “flatten” the American Mission. Surveillance of the American compound appears to have been underway at least 12 hours before the assault started.

The violence, though, also had spontaneous elements. Anger at the video motivated the initial attack. Dozens of people joined in, some of them provoked by the video and others responding to fast-spreading false rumors that guards inside the American compound had shot Libyan protesters. Looters and arsonists, without any sign of a plan, were the ones who ravaged the compound after the initial attack, according to more than a dozen Libyan witnesses as well as many American officials who have viewed the footage from security cameras.

I’m pretty sure we knew this already.

With the vast amount of Libyan army weapons floating around uncontrolled - enough to fuel uprisings in Mali, Nigeria, etc, ffs - it wouldn’t have required Al Qaeda-style planning to get that kind of firepower. Probably some text messages, “Let’s F**k with the US” would have sufficed.

Filmmaker Behind Anti-Islam Film Released From Halfway House

“Police have confirmed Nakoula will be released to Pastor Wiley Drake of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, according to CBS2′s Michelle Gile.

(snip)

Nakoula went into hiding last September before his arrest after U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in an attack by Muslim protesters on the U.S. consulate compound in Benghazi, CBS News reported.

Ambassador Susan Rice and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had initially cited Nakoula’s film as a possible provocation for the attacks in Benghazi, but it was later revealed that unidentified government officials removed references to terrorism and al Qaeda from so-called “talking points” released to the public shortly after the attacks, according to CBS News.”

“Innocence of Muslims” purported to be an online trailer for a film about the mistreatment of Christians in contemporary Egypt. But it included bawdy historical flashbacks that derided the Prophet Muhammad. Someone dubbed it into Arabic around the beginning of September 2012, and a Cairo newspaper embellished the news by reporting that a Florida pastor infamous for burning the Quran was planning to debut the film on the 11th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Then, on Sept. 8, a popular Islamist preacher lit the fuse by screening a clip of the video on the ultraconservative Egyptian satellite channel El Nas. American diplomats in Cairo raised the alarm in Washington about a growing backlash, including calls for a protest outside their embassy.

No one mentioned it to the American diplomats in Libya. But Islamists in Benghazi were watching. Egyptian satellite networks like El Nas and El Rahma were widely available in Benghazi. “It is Friday morning viewing,” popular on the day of prayer, said one young Benghazi Islamist who turned up at the compound during the attack, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

By Sept. 9, a popular eastern Libyan Facebook page had denounced the film. On the morning of Sept. 11, even some secular political activists were posting calls online for a protest that Friday, three days away.

Yes, this is the timeline I remember and the video was already causing major problems throughout the region.
The video may not have been 100% responsible, but it certainly did serve as a convenient excuse for those responsible for the Benghazi attack.

Agreed. So far I haven’t spotted any new revelations in the article, Mostly just confirming what was already known. The timeline is a bit interesting. Again confirming there was no protest before the attack began. The attackers used the rumor that Americans were shooting protesters as an excuse to get people to show up….

At 9:42 p.m., according to American officials who have viewed the security camera footage, a police vehicle stationed outside turned on its ignition and drove slowly away.

A moment later a solitary figure strolled by the main gate, kicking pebbles and looking around — a final once-over, according to the officials.

The attack began with just a few dozen fighters, according to those officials. The invaders fired their Kalashnikovs at the lights around the gate and broke through with ease.

The compound had a total of eight armed guards that night: five Americans and three Libyans affiliated with the February 17 militia. All of them fell back. The Americans raced to grab their weapons in the compound’s other buildings but then found a swarm of attackers blocking their way to the main villa.
….
a false report spread much wider and faster: that guards in the compound had shot and wounded Libyans who had come only to protest.

“They told each other that the Americans had killed a Libyan,” Mr. Gharabi said. “For that reason, everybody would go.”

Mr. Gharabi, who was at a friend’s wedding a hundred miles away, knew that some of his fighters would join the attack, so he sent a delegation of “wise men” to deter them, he said. Mr. Bukatef of the February 17 Brigade was in Tripoli that night but said in an interview that he also believed some of his men had participated.

Soon scores, if not hundreds, of others were racing to the scene. Some arrived with guns, some with cameras. The attackers had posted sentries at Venezia Road, adjacent to the compound, to guard their rear flank, but they let pass anyone trying to join the mayhem. Witnesses said young men rushing inside had left empty pickup trucks from Ansar al-Shariah, but also all the other big militias ostensibly allied with the government.

FBI: Suspect in Mississippi bank robbery that left cop dead now tied to heist in Georgia

usnews.nbcnews.com

“A bank robbery suspect on the run after fatally shooting one policeman and wounding another in Mississippi earlier this week has been connected to an earlier robbery that same day in Georgia, the FBI said on Saturday.

“The FBI is offering up to $100,000 for information leading to the capture of the unidentified suspect, who is considered “armed and extremely dangerous,” the bureau’s Atlanta field office said in a statement.

“The reward is in addition to $100,000 also being offered from various business community leaders in Mississippi.

“This person is very dangerous, we have every reason to believe this person will continue on their deadly path,” Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen of the FBI’s Jackson, Miss. division told NBC News on Saturday. “It is urgent that we locate and arrest this person.”

yep. A snippet from another person’s comment there:

Or how about Clinton’s comment “What difference does it make?” She has about as much regard for human life as Obama does. I will tell you what difference it makes. Good Americans were allowed to die due to Obama and Clinton’s total disregard for human life in the best light. They both need to be held accountable and no mainstream media company really cares.

To me it’s the Republicans in congress that are showing more “total disregard for human life” by trying to keep millions of Americans from getting Health Care.

The video was the spark that lit the fire, as was first reported, contrary to the immediate protests of the right.

If you include an image in an LGF Page, it’s automatically used as the image when that link is tweeted.

OT, but I need to vent.

It seems to me that advertised sales are becoming largely meaningless because retail prices/MSRP don’t mean anything anymore.

Case in point, in the lead up to Christmas I saw several stores advertising sales featuring 40-60% discounts on big name brand name whatever.

It used to be that 40-60% off was a SIGNIFICANT discount that you didn’t see very much, ESPECIALLY not in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Thus, I am forced to conclude that such “sales” , and the discounts they offer are merely a ruse to separate people from their money.

It amazes me with how common this ploy is becoming that more people aren’t picking up on it.

I think MSRP means “Maybe Somebody Really Pays”. One thing I know is that some high end product lines do have a lowest price that a retailer can display on the web for a product (Canon, I’m looking at you….) but retailers can sell for less. That’s the great “Put In Cart To See Price” thing.

Remember when all the RWNJs were screaming their heads off about Obama having sent Nakoula Basseley Nakoula to prison for the video? These morons couldn’t even get THAT story right. He was charged with eight violations of his probation for a bank fraud conviction, all of which were for giving false statements about his involvement in the making of the video. Link He could have been charged for using the internet without supervision (which he clearly did) but no charges were filed. Sometimes I wish Obama was white so the stupid from these people wouldn’t be nearly as bad.

I don’t think the guys pulling the GOP’s strings want folks too focused on bank fraud and the ways the fraudster/bankers spend their stolen money.

Sales are just not as straight-forward as they used to be. A lot of products are brought in just for the “sales” and even from store warehouses of old stuff that didn’t sell previously. You know that if stores start displaying christmas before Halloween, that those things were either on-hand or ordered a long time ago.

If that coveted cashmere sweater goes on sale, the sale price is not losing them any money, because they’ve jacked up the “original” price to more than it usually would be. In other words, if it usually sells for $200, they’ll put it on sale for $200 and make you think the “original price” was $300 by marking it that way.

Even taking the report at face value, why the attackers dared is less important than that they dared-, less important than why they succeeded—and less important that they (so far) got away with it.

Meanwhile, for example:

Japan’s Prime Minister Goes to Yasukuni Shrine, Defying the Stern Warning from the US Administration

Saudi Arabia Will Go It Alone

The USA’s historic resilience offers hope, but by no means a guarantee, that it will snap out of this period of drift & erosion. When tectonic plates are shifting and mountains are being created & destroyed, infantile partisan squabbles about molehills are not an encouraging indicator.

“Major Joel Maatman, with the Ingham County sheriff’s office in Michigan, said residents in rural areas — like many hit by the storm — have past experience with bad weather and had generators that allowed them to stay in their homes.

“I’ve been here since 1975 and I don’t remember an ice storm like this,” said Maatman, who used a portable generator and wood-burning stove for power and heat. “I live out in the sticks, and you got to have a generator.”

“But “out-county where there is a lot of farming and open land, I think it’s always on every police officer’s mind that crime can occur,” he added.

“Authorities blame last weekend’s storm for 17 deaths in the U.S. and 10 in Canada. At least five of those deaths have been initially attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning related to using generators. “

We read it in high school (along with The Metamorposis) Being the practical person I am, The Metamorphosis sort of stalled me at the concept that if he is a person sized cockroach, then his legs would be proportionately to small to hold him up. The Penal Colony on the other hand was so ghastly I told the teacher I wasn’t reading any more Kafka. Whether it was a class assignment or not.

Wow, I’m glad I didn’t start with that one.

I’ve never read anything about Kafka’s life. I can’t imagine why someone would want to write such depressing things, though I suppose the ability to do so is a sort of talent/genius. Still… ugh.

I hate to admit that I haven’t read Kafka (A shortcoming I shall attempt to fix this coming year), but the author that STILL scares the bejezus out of me is H.P. Lovecraft. First time I ever read him I was in grade school, it was a dark stormy night, and I’ve been scarred ever since (ok, maybe just a little scabbed). He gives you a few lines, some shadows, and you create your own worst nightmare in your mind.

Not quite Page worthy:

Hockey isn’t normally the first sport that comes to mind in New Mexico, and finding an all-girls team is even more rare, but it’s the team’s goalie who is defying the odds.

The New Mexico Mustangs hockey team is made up of teens ages 15-19. It practices in Santa Fe, but plays most of its games outside the Land of Enchantment.

”We’re the only U19 team in New Mexico, so we play out of the state, in Colorado,” says 17-year-old goalie Maisie Reynolds.

[…]

Her name is Maisie Reynolds and she was born without a left hand and it hasn’t stopped her from making saves.

”I had always adapted to it, I didn’t realize something was different until I started playing more and I was already used to it, so I didn’t think it was a disadvantage,” she explains.

Reynolds doesn’t require any help getting ready to hit the ice, but there are some challenges.

”Mainly just trying out different things to see what works, like trying gloves on different hands, and over time I realized that I play left-handed instead of right-handed, so I’m left-handed-dominant, which is weird because I don’t have a left hand,” says Reynolds.

The Eldorado High School junior approaches her disability with her sense of humor.

”It’s fun if my glove falls off. They see it, they’re like, ‘Oh gosh,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh yeah my hand fell off,’ like it’s normal,” Reynolds laughs.

Wounded warriors can walk-by-thought with bionic, mind-controlled leg (VIDEO)

Researchers at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago are developing a bionic leg that can read the operator’s mind.

Even when a limb is missing, the brain still sends signals to it as if it was still there. This phenomenon results in “phantom limb,” or the feeling the appendage is still attached to the body. It also provides the artificial leg with the brain signals needed to function, Time Tech reports.

Currently, the mind-controlled leg can mimic the user’s natural stride, as well as allow them to traverse stairs and moderate slopes. Soon, it may allow them run.

And so it begins…

A top congressional Republican is saying a new report that concludes Al Qaeda did not carry out the 2012 attack on the U.S diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, is “misleading.”

The new report published Saturday in the New York Times concludes that there was no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the assault that took place on September 11, 2012, and that it appeared that the attack was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made anti-Islamic video, as the Obama administration first claimed.

New York Rep. Peter King, member and former chairman of the House’s Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told Fox News the argument that the most overtly anti-Western militia, Ansar al-Shariah - not Al Qaeda - led the attack is an academic argument over semantics, considering Ansar al-Shariah is widely believed to be an affiliate terror group of Al Qaeda.

“It’s misleading,” King said. “It’s a distinction without a difference.”

The claims by the New York Times also conflicts with other evidence, including the testimony of Greg Hicks, the deputy of Ambassador Christopher Stevens who was killed in the attack. Hicks described the video as “a non-event in Libya” at that time, and consequently not a significant trigger for the attack

It would also contradict a separate report by a leading social media firm that found that the first reference to the anti-Islam film that was initially blamed for sparking the attack was not detected on social media until a day later.

Good fucking grief.

155 CuriousLurker  Sat, Dec 28, 2013 3:56:55pm

So I went to the local grocery store a few hours ago. I don’t usually shop there because their prices are steeper than the bigger supermarkets, like ShopRite.

Anyway, there has always been an interesting array of items there as the neighborhood has a lot of Haitian immigrants as well as people from Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru (as well as a smattering of Mexicans & Salvadorans). I usually go there when I want to find specifically Latino things that aren’t included with the standard Cuban/Puerto Rican fare in the bigger supermarkets.

So it’s kinda fun, looking around at all the exotic foodstuffs and trying to figure out what they are. I used to do the same thing in Queens at the big Asian supermarkets. There are all these Peruvian drinks made out of purple/blue corn. Corn is a big thing, all kinds of freaking corn—blue/purple, yellow, giant white kernels, hot flavored drinks, cereals, and puddings made of corn, corn for tortillas, corn for tamales, you name it.

I hadn’t been there in a few months and they’ve changed the meat department too. Now there are all kinds of icky parts, goat legs, goat’s feet (brown ones—apparently that makes a difference), pig’s feet… Oh, then the egg section! There were freaking duck eggs and quail eggs along with the regular brown & white ones! I’m still trying to figure out all the stuff in the cheese & bread section (most of which seems relatively “safe” to try, unlike some of the stuff in the dry goods section like canned chilis & spices with names I don’t recognize).

Anyway, It’s was way cool. I love diversity even when it’s a little icky and I don’t understand everything I’m seeing, LOL. BTW, fellow shoppers are usually very helpful even when their English is limited, the problem is finding someone from the country whose foodstuff you have a question about—you ask a Mexican about some Peruvian thing and they’re like “Beats the hell outta me. *shrug* I have no idea what it is, sorry.”

Here’s the New York Times article from October 2012, a month after the attack:

nytimes.com

To this day, the GOP argument that Benghazi was an Al-Q plot relies upon three bits of circumstantial “evidence”:

- Allegations of a Facebook post taking credit for the attack, yet the only evidence of said post is an email claiming to have seen it, as over a year later nobody has produced said post.

- Assertions that the militia group responsible is a front/affiliate/local branch of Al-Q, which falls apart when the leader of said militia responded to such allegations with laughter and denials.

- Reports of intercepted Al-Q messages saying that they were thinking of the consulate and the ambassador as an easy target, which is about as much proof that they carried out the attack as the US having invasion plans of Canada is proof that we’re doing anything more than planning out scenarios.

“A section of the toll road leading from Tijuana to Ensenada collapsed more than 300 feet toward the ocean early this morning, which is leading to lengthy detours along the smaller, less-traveled free road.

“The collapse happened at kilometer 93 just south of Salsipuedes following a magnitude 4.6 earthquake on December 20 along Federal Highway 3 between Ensenada and San Felipe. The road has been unstable for many years and was known for its rough surface and low speed limit; it slipped about a foot on December 27, and then collapsed nearly 350 feet in the early hours of December 28.

OMG… It’s the Duck Dynasty XXX Parody

I may have booked myself to a one-way trip to hell posting this but this is hilarious to watch! (No explicit scenes inhere, but you know what to expect from a trailer like this. Incidentally, also a ZZ-top track was raped for this travesty.)

Any scene where they use a duck call looks hilarious.

Of course not. In their minds, the ideal American male lived in one isolated point in American history. Every man who has lived since, no matter how much of a meat-head he may be or the degree of testosterone poisoning he’s undergoing, he’s still “feminized” because society says they actually have to respect women.

If I’m not mistaken, that’s a promotional image for the first ever Wrestlemania show in 1985.

How could you tell the parody from the original?

Only half-kidding. I love GoT, but I think they went a little OTT with the nudity. It put off a few people I know who would otherwise have loved it.

236 Archangelus  Sat, Dec 28, 2013 6:41:24pm

Well, the good news is that it’s my birthday (yay!); the bad news - weather forecasts here imply a need for heavy-duty umbrellas and/or an ark…

Not really IMO. Compared to the stuff in the books, the TV show is quite tame…

(Little warning; keep some tissues nearby, you’re going to need them.)

Well, one does have to sort out which of the Libyans were telling the truth.

I think the early statement by the Libyan President was what threw a bunch of people off at the start. Those not all up in the RWNJ machine. As I said at the time if you looked at the calendar and gave the Libyan president any credence at all the video seemed a lesser possibility. Those two bits of information have nothing to do with anyones agenda. They were just there.

That’s not to be confused with those who ran over the edge with the same info and an agenda.

In one of those pictures you see a love handle. Love handles are normally not allowed in the modeling industry. Anything over a size 4 is plus sized to them. To me that only thing that makes her plus sized is her height.
