100 Year-Old Photographic Negatives Discovered from Doomed Antarctic Expedition

On Ice: 100 Year-Old Negatives Discovered in Antarctic

Conservators restoring an Antarctic exploration hut recently made a remarkable discovery: a small box of 22 exposed but unprocessed photographic negatives, frozen in a solid block of ice for nearly one hundred years.

These negatives were meticulously processed and restored by a Wellington photography conservator. Antarctic Heritage Trust executive director Nigel Watson said of these never-before-seen images:

“It’s the first example that I’m aware of, of undeveloped negatives from a century ago from the Antarctic heroic era. There’s a paucity of images from that expedition.”

The team from the Antarctic Heritage Trust (NZ) discovered the box in a corner of one of the many supply depots Robert Falcon Scott established for his doomed Terre Nova Expedition to the South Pole (1910-1913). Though Scott reached the Pole, he and his party died of starvation and the extreme cold on their return trip.

Wish my old man had strip cut and stored his negatives better. Had them rolled up in canisters and the base will not unwind without cracking. Early safety film with the vinegar smell to them.

This is a great book about a doomed Arctic Expedition I read some years ago (my first e-book).

In the Land of White Death: An Epic Story of Survival in the Siberian Arctic

In 1912, six months after Robert Falcon Scott and four of his men came to grief in Antarctica, a thirty-two-year-old Russian navigator named Valerian Albanov embarked on an expedition that would prove even more disastrous. In search of new Arctic hunting grounds, Albanov’s ship, the Saint Anna, was frozen fast in the pack ice of the treacherous Kara Sea-a misfortune grievously compounded by an incompetent commander, the absence of crucial nautical charts, insufficient fuel, and inadequate provisions that left the crew weak and debilitated by scurvy.

For nearly a year and a half, the twenty-five men and one woman aboard the Saint Anna endured terrible hardships and danger as the icebound ship drifted helplessly north. Convinced that the Saint Anna would never free herself from the ice, Albanov and thirteen crewmen left the ship in January 1914, hauling makeshift sledges and kayaks behind them across the frozen sea, hoping to reach the distant coast of Franz Josef Land. With only a shockingly inaccurate map to guide him, Albanov led his men on a 235-mile journey of continuous peril, enduring blizzards, disintegrating ice floes, attacks by polar bears and walrus, starvation, sickness, snowblindness, and mutiny. That any of the team survived is a wonder. That Albanov kept a diary of his ninety-day ordeal-a story that Jon Krakauer calls an “astounding, utterly compelling book,” and David Roberts calls “as lean and taut as a good thriller”-is nearly miraculous.

Whenever I read about a doomed expedition, I remember Red Dwarf.

In the episode entitled “White Hole” of the British TV series Red Dwarf, the characters plead with the hologram Rimmer to sacrifice himself by agreeing to be turned off, thus providing the currently-low-on-power ship to sustain them for longer than it could do so if he was still running, comparing the act to that of Oates. Rimmer simply dismisses him as a “prat”, suggesting instead that since the only record of Oates’ sacrifice was from Scott’s journal, it’s likely that Scott had eaten Oates to avoid starvation after he had “whacked him over the head with a frozen husky” (which is what Rimmer said he’d do, had he been there), the diary entry simply being made because, in Rimmer’s view, it was “better to say ‘Oates made the supreme sacrifice’ while you’re dabbing up his gravy with the last piece of crusty bread”.

looking at the Oregon site now. I’m pretty sure the estimates they’re showing aren’t correct. About 50% lower than when I checked last month.

I’ve tried for years to get my parents to quit. My mother actually has said she’d quit, has quit in the past, and would have no problem doing so again. Except she does have a problem, namely that she won’t agree to quit unless my father does, and he’s as stubborn as a mule. Time and again I’ve implored upon to quit, even if just to save money in cash-strapped times, but they blow me off by telling me that the doctors assure them they’re in good health. Except I know that’s bull because both have had their doctors tell them they need to quit.

I’ve sort of come to make peace with the reality that one of them’s not going to quit until they turn up with a major health issue related to their smoking, and by then I imagine they’ll just keep smoking because in their minds they’re already past the point-of-no-return.

I was under the impression that the 3/31 deadline had to do with whether or not you’d get hit with the tax penalty in your ‘15 taxes.

She quit during the two times she was pregnant, first with me and then my sister, and she quit for a summer shortly after she retired from the Navy. But my dad insists on continuing to smoke, and between the stress of a new job and the smell of cigarettes in the house, she ended up smoking again.

Somebody told me they hope I have movie on DVD since after seeing it, you will want to watch Mary Poppins all over again. Well, they were right, now I just need to go buy the movie on Blu-Ray

It’s really fucking complicated but I think there will be a lot of leeway. it’s been such a clusterfuck that I really don’t think they can get away with handing out penalties for not using a service that’s not functional yet. They want people to sign up so I figure there will be plenty of exceptions and extensions.

Sounds better than what our company offers. It’s a “Pewter” plan, but the good news is that I can get my care from almost any of the Veterinarians in town, and they cover 60% of the cost for the plastic cone that goes around my neck.

I had some pulmonary testing recently, courtesy of the VA. After the tests, the *first* thing the doctor said to me was “How long have you been a three-pack-a-day smoker?”

I listened, and I understood. It’s now been five weeks since I’ve taken even a puff.

If this keeps up, I may have to change my screen name.

yeah, my mom’s father lost 50 years of photographs when Wilkes-Barre flooded in ‘72. It does tend to make you wonder about the absolute loss in things like that.

Four robbery suspects arrested for what LAPD deems ‘felony stupid’

According to Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman, at approximately 2:40 a.m. on Saturday morning a Los Angeles resident awoke and saw four suspects on her home surveillance system entering her house. She immediately called 911, and police and SWAT were on the scene within minutes.

One of the suspects immediately fled and was quickly apprehended. Another absconded into the backyard, but found himself fenced in.

The two remaining suspects convinced the homeowner to tie them up and identify them to the police as fellow victims. She obliged, tying them up before leaving her residence to talk to police, who she quickly informed of the remaining suspects’ plan.

The police decided to wait the bound suspects out, Officer Eisenman told the Los Angeles Times, and after some time the suspects “got tired of waiting” and emerged.

“They came out, still tied up, thinking that we were going to believe they were victims also,” Eisenman said. “That’s what you call felony stupid.”

Drove to Santa Cruz to have dinner/drinks with a friend and some of her friends who had ridden their bikes there from San Francisco today. Being me, I wore my good tie-dye and peace sign hat. I like nicotine more than cannabinoids but really find gum to be just as satisfying as smoking—maybe more since I don’t have the lung problems. A young guy at work was raving about his cannabis lip balm the other day. I hadn’t heard of that before.

Both, actually. Healing the lungs takes priority, though. At some point in the future maybe I’ll consider investing in a vaporizer; I’ve also heard that a water pipe is better for one’s lungs than smoking from a regular pipe or cigarette papers. However, my current housing situation precludes either of those options.

Obviously, cold turkey is the absolute best option. So cold turkey it was. :-)

My husband had struggled with quitting for a long time. He finally did it by switching to electronic cigarettes and then slowly giving that up as well.

The first time I quit smoking was so easy, however, I was on vacation in Palm Springs, so I was very relaxed and off my daily routine. The next and final time I quit was very hard, as I was home, and had to deal with not only breaking the nicotine urge, but the smoking routine I had.

At some point in the future maybe I’ll consider investing in a vaporizer; I’ve also heard that a water pipe is better for one’s lungs than smoking from a regular pipe or cigarette papers. However, my current housing situation precludes either of those options.

I’ve never smoked cigarettes.

I had some pulmonary testing recently, courtesy of the VA. After the tests, the *first* thing the doctor said to me was “How long have you been a three-pack-a-day smoker?”

I listened, and I understood. It’s now been five weeks since I’ve taken even a puff.

If this keeps up, I may have to change my screen name.

I smoked weed for decades - and a shitload of it. Eventually, I just stopped. Still like it occasionally, but limit myself to one hit as my tolerance is back in the toilet. Love the taste, love the smell…don’t really love being stoned anymore though…that made giving it up a lot easier. Probably smoked it less than five times in the last six or seven years.

It gets easier with time. Don’t worry about it. And enjoy being aware (even though it sucks sometimes).

However, I’ve read that water pipes, and hookahs, aren’t much of an improvement. They cool the smoke, but don’t filter out any of the vaporized chemicals or particulates in the smoke.

Even atheists have rights under this provision of Title VII. For instance, you should be able to excuse yourself if people insist on a “prayer” before a staff meeting, for instance. You cannot be retaliated against for that, although scummy employers will always find a way to fire someone even if the employee has a clean, outstanding work record.

Of course, this doesn’t affect the DD people since their “employment” is covered under contract law; however, the people who are hired employees of A&E or Duck Commander who are subjected to these forms of “religious expression”, the situation is different.

So, if Phil thinks he can now hold forth on the set of DD and say anything he wants, whether it gets to the TV screen or not, I have a bridge in AK to sell him. He can’t just proselytize and condemn people by quoting the bible—the work place is not the pulpit. With all the resultant publicity about his GQ article, though, he may have already poisoned the workplace for those affected by his remarks. Trying to kick those remarks under the carpet is going to cost A&E.

This is the situation that took down Paula Deen—race discrimination and her use of racist language alleged by an employee (who was white, BTW).

I let my work team know in advance if there are any religious holidays coming up that I won’t be at work those days and I usually have my projects completed by that time. In the winter I work extra hours on Monday and Tuesday so that I can leave early on Friday (for Sabbath).

When there is free food, I don’t partake, but I sometimes bring in treats that everyone can share.

My other co-workers are generic Christian, atheist, evangelical, Catholic and Hindu. We don’t sit around and talk about our various religions, we have to do actual work.

Nobody at work knows that I cover my hair.

Taking down decorations on this rainy day. One very large box just of Santa Claus collection and a few other items. Next, the trees and garlands. Easy work. Then the cleaning. I took the little bit I have left and put it away yesterday. I used to go nuts at Christmas, 3 trees (small medium and large), the whole house looked like Martha Stewart’s magazine threw up everywhere. 3 yrs ago The Husband got a job offer in another state and I purged everything down to a box of old ornaments from my grandma and a box of ornaments that I’ve collected for The Teenager. So, this year I bought two little teeny live trees and some more stuff to make a wreath and some stuff for the fireplace mantle. If the trees survive, I might need a few more lights as they get bigger, but I don’t foresee having to buy much else ever again.

I don’t get people sometimes. I have a friend who doesn’t have kids and leaves to go visit family for Christmas. She spent FIVE DAYS decorating a house that no one will be at for the holidays. Oh, it’s stunningly gorgeous, but why? No one will see it but her and her husband (he works out of town and comes home on weekends). Then she has to come home from a week or more of traveling and clean all that up and put it away.

Since the thread started with smoking, let me give you some of my tips for quitting. Go cold turkey. If you can’t live without cigarettes and patches don’t work (don’t use patches either) try Skoal or Copenhagen. I found quitting chewing tobacco easier. Suck on candy canes or menthol cough drops. Cut down on coffee, or switch to decaff. No drinking alcohol for the first two weeks. Most importantly, you will always be addicted. I haven’t smoked in 10 years, I would still love one, and would puke all over if I did. Good luck. For my quitting drinking was the hardest, but I don’t miss alcohol anymore.

At any rate, it shouldn’t cost anything to replace it, but let me tell you: When that happened to my rear window, the assholes who replaced it never reconnected the heating elements correctly, and by the time I discovered it, it was too late to get them back out there. So, no rear defroster for 12 yrs, but luckily, I don’t have to scrape that often.

Make sure the job is done right; if it’s not, your ins co should keep after them and not pay until it is.

Religion is the easy answer to all the hard questions. What happens when we die? Whoa. Better invent a happy place so the whole tribe doesn’t do a buffalo run off the edge of the mesa. Maybe a few buttons of Peyote in the soup will help me sell this story.

Too easy—it’s more a feedback loop between a growing awareness of the greater environment and an animal that is becoming sentient. Every culture, with few arguable exceptions, has had to come up with a best-guess cosmology to help hold its world-system together. That none of them have been accurate is a minor detail.

There’s a difference between going to Benghazi and doing a photo op with your armed escort and going to Benghazi and interviewing some of the people actually involved in the attack.

And tjhere’s a difference between investigating Benghazi to find a way to put procedures in place to avoid similar events in the future and investigating it for purposes of political grandstanding.

I’d expect the NYT reporters had an armed escort as well. It’s SOP in Middle Eastern cities. Reporters in Iraq also need them.

I don’t think so. Do you think many of the characters that are figured into religion would survive not being committed for their actions these days?

How many people, for instance, have been arrested and are either committed or serving time for killing someone and invoked “God” or “jesus” or “The Devil” told the person they were evil and should be killed?

Does the story of Abraham ring a bell?

Hey, Senator McCain backed Ambassador Stevens’ plans in Libya, and he and his fellow Senators visited as part of a fact-finding trip intended to find actual facts. Compared to some of the bullshit other senators have called ‘fact-finding’, McCain’s golden.
