It’s always bad form to bring a politician’s family into it.

But the comments on MHP’s show were about Romney and the Republican Party’s fake diversity - NOT about mocking the child.

By the way, the Romneys named their adopted grandson Kieran - which is Gaelic for “black.”

Agree, nothing much was said that was overly offensive, however calling attention to the child’s difference (as compared to the rest of the family) and playing it up is insensitive and should have been avoided. The fact that this is mentioned in the same paragraph as discussions about Robertson’s comments or the comments about shitting in Palin’s mouth (which I thought was a grand idea) is absurd.

And on the other side;

But Bryan, our “Founding Fathers” that you revere so highly (not for what they said obviously, but for the words you want to put in their mouths) put it this way:

Article 6, US Constitution:

All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

So obviously, anyone that holds your view should not be allowed to be elected to office or public trust because they are not supporting the US Constitution, so cannot take the Oath of Affirmation without lying.

Yes I admit, I fell off my couch on that one. 3 of the 4 things that needed to happen for the Steelers to sneak into the playoffs happen, and something that seemed much more likely to happen doesn’t happen. Yeah. I mean it’s frustrating especially knowing that San Diego got away with a penalty on the FG try but you just can’t start 0-4 and lose to teams like Minnesota and Tennessee and expect to make the playoffs. Now the good news is I’m more optimistic going forward. I think Bell’s going to be the best all-around back this team has had in a while. He even broke Franco Harris’ record for yards from scrimmage for a rookie back. And he’s not a truther like Mendenhall was and from what I can see gets along with coaches fine.

I am thinking Cincy finally gets that first playoff win since 1990. SD had to beat a KC team resting its starters in OT. Plus Dalton and co look a lot better at home. I’m sticking to my mid-season pick of it being a match of the old and new with Peyton and the Broncos taking on Wilson and the SEahawks in the SB. I think that would be a great game.

They still have to work on their offensive line in order to get both their passing and running attack more consistent. Also an aging defense to deal with that was not up to the usual high standard.

Oh yeah, a lot needs to be done but I am just saying that I feel better now than I did in October. Have a feeling we saw the last of some old timers like Clark, Keisel, and some others this weekend. Always liked Clark because of how the Redskins treated him and he comes here and gets a SB ring while the Skins are still looking for a playoff win.

Unfortunately, I think it’s like that with many wealthy men like Mr. Langone. I mean there are some sincerely charitable wealthy people out there. I don’t doubt that but I think many of them see the tax benefits that come with it and see it as a way of saving money rather than helping those down on their luck.

I caught on NPR today how a growing trend is to “contribute” to charity, but the money isn’t distributed, it’s parked in what basically works as an Escrow acct. The giver gets the tax writeoff, but nobody down stream gets anything.

“I’ve told the cardinal, ‘Your Eminence, this is one more hurdle I hope we don’t have to deal with. You want to be careful about generalities. Rich people in one country don’t act the same as rich people in another country,’” said Langone.

So basically, Mr. Home Depot wants acknowledgement from the Church for the money he donates, and he wants special consideration for it.

Huh. I seem to recall a long-haired hippie from the Middle East saying this:

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthrew 6: 1-4, NIV

But what did that guy know?

The thing is though Popes have pretty much always been critics of unregulated capitalism. Francis isn’t unique in that regard. He is fairly unique in that I think he lives up to what he preaches more than his predecessors did and that’s why while I have problems with him, I think he’s been what the RCC needs. Lowe’s moved its corporate headquarter there at that time, too, from Wilkesboro. Real estate operators were making fortunes selling hastily constructed lake McMansions, most of which were plagued with mold, as one agent told me, as she bought paint one night to cover mold that was seeping through the sheetrock in a new house. It’s so congested now I hate to even go over there to the Best Buy, Target, or other stores not in this area. Well, all the sheetrock sold at Lowe’s came from US sources, but that probably wasn’t true of bldr sources. There’s a lot of mold around water anyway. A friend of mine has a little trailer that is infested so much she stays sick yet she doesn’t have the money to buy another—she’s about 30 or so ft from the shore. A lot of people don’t realize how much upkeep it takes for lakeside properties, and most aren’t “cabins”—there are some real manses over there. Even small residential lots alone will set you back $250K, depending on location.

While I was there, one of the Lowe’s VPs built a 13,000 sq ft mansion on the lake (one of my customers was a young carpenter who worked on it and told me of its glory). Said the guy was retiring w/his wife and told him they needed the space for when their grandchildren visited.

In 2007, the starting wage for new employees was dropped from $8.75 an hour down to $7.40 an hour ($6.55 being the federal minimum wage at the time). In a press release on March 28, 2007, Circuit City announced that in a “wage management” decision in order to cut costs, it had laid off approximately 3400 better-paid associates and would re-staff the positions at the lower market-based salaries. Laid-off associates were provided severance and offered a chance to be re-hired after ten weeks at prevailing wages. The Washington Post reported interviews with management concerning the firings.

The Post later reported in May 2007 that the layoffs, and consequent loss of experienced sales staff, appeared to be “backfiring” and resulting in slower sales.

Not sure that’s real. What language is that? It’s not Arabic.

This response at his twitter site:

@MaherHamoud1 @TheBigPharaoh looks fake. Banner + man seems edited in. Banner doesnt have any lines holding it up, just floating in the air.

re: #94 wrenchwench

I think that’s stylized Arabic, but you’re right, I see nothing holding it up, and there are lighted waves in the fabric in the left side that don’t match the ambient light.

I’m just jumping in because the above caught my eye and i haven’t read through the entire thread, so if this has been covered please disregard.

WW is correct, it’s Arabic it’s just a funky typeface. The 1st word that the guy translated as “extermination” comes up as “annihilation” in Google Translate, so basically the same meaning.

The 2nd word that he translates as “duty” could also be translated as “necessary” or “obligatory” (in a religious sense).

The 3rd word (in red) appears to be ikhwan, which means brothers or brotherhood, i.e. the MB.

I’m not sure about the 4th word as I can’t figure out which letter the last character is supposed to be and it could completely change the meaning.

The 5th word has to do with health.

The 6th word is Jews.

The 7th word is Egypt.

There is no explicit mention of Zionism, which is a word that’s typically transliterated using Arabic letters since there is apparently no Arabic word for it.

As for the sign, it is being suspended up by some type of ropes or wires. I had to zoom in to 500% to see them in Photoshop:

As for the MB’s strings are being pulled by the Jews, that’s apparently NOT a new conspiracy theory, according to the ADL. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Egyptian government entities were behind it, which I assume is why the Tweeter called it a “Fascist banner”.

Did a page about that ‘bout a month back, with one of the authors of the ACA and Romneycare weighing in on the whole matter. He said that, of the total insurance market, individual policies already account for less than a quarter of all policies. Of those, less than a quarter will have to get policies that cost more than what they pay now, but only because they were paying for junk policies to begin with. The final result was roughly 3% of those who had policies before the ACA will find themselves paying more. The remaining 97% either already get coverage through their employer or will get better deals on the exchanges than they would prior to the ACA.

Bishops ask for delay in contraception coverage mandate

politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com

(CNN) - The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, sent a letter to President Obama asking that some business with strong religious views be exempted from fines related to the new health care law until the Supreme Court rules on legal challenges over contraception coverage.

“The Supreme Court last month agreed to review provisions in the Affordable Care Act requiring employers of a certain size to offer insurance coverage for birth control and other reproductive health services without a co-pay.

“Employers, including those with moral and religious objections, will have to comply with the Affordable Care Act provision starting January 1 or else face hefty financial penalties. “

They can object all they like, but unless they’re going to compensate their employees for the cost of procedures that they will not allow insurance to cover, then they’re got no fucking leg to stand on. It is their compensation, you don’t get to decide how they will use it.

re: #117 Justanotherhuman

Lowe’s has an interesting history. The original founders made sure that employees shared in the profits. When I went to work there in 2002, there were tales of older employees who were millionaires, or close to it because of the ESOP (employee stock option plan) set up. lt changed to 401ks once I arrived, after it became more “corporate” and the vultures moved in.

One share bought in 1961 equaled 240 shares in 1996; that’s how often the shares split.

A 401(k) can be fantastic. My first employer out of college gave us the choice of a match with cash or company stock. Those that elected company stock made an absolute killing. Too bad for those that thought the man was trying to screw them.

191 Targetpractice  Tue, Dec 31, 2013 2:19:51pm

If these employers with “religious and moral objections” don’t want health insurance to cover certain things, then drop the coverage and pay their employees enough so that they can afford their own insurance. Problem solved.

Ayep, it’s why McDonald’s raised holy havoc when the new ACA guidelines would mean they’d have to drop the BS mini-med “coverage” for their employees and actually give them adequate insurance.

There was a distinct difference in the ESOP and the 401K. The ESOP pushed Lowe’s stock; the 401K that replaced it had a number of possible choices in a variety of mixed stock plans with different rates of return. Sticking with one stock, like the company’s, was easy to follow, esp in a growth period for Lowe’s. Everyone knew when the stock was splitting. Nobody could explain the other plans very well to the employees or advise them worth a damn. I’ve had four 401Ks at 4 different jobs, none of which I thought was worth a damn and none of which had much value, even after several years. But that probably had something to do with being low on the totem pole. If you can only contribute 6% of your salary for a match, the more salary you make, the more is matched and the more you invest. I don’t think I had one that had a value of more than $2K, even after 5 yrs of employment, and I usually wound up using it to pay the mortgage between jobs.

On a completely random note, since it’s New Year’s Eve and people are currently buying gym and Weight Watchers memberships they’ll forget about by March and making promises to [insert life goal here] (again!), I downloaded the audiobook for The Nerdist Way by Chris Hardwick and started listening to it last night.

So far so good. It’s a lot like the Nerdist podcast in that he doesn’t hold back on the geek talk or the profanity, but he’s got an interesting, highly nerdy take on things. I especially like his idea of turning your life into an RPG by creating a character tome, personal stats, alignment, etc. and giving yourself small goals (i.e., quests) to level up and raise those stats as you go. It’s geeky, but he makes a good point. The same nerd focus that allows a person to focus on video games or D&D or whatever can allow a person to focus on self-improvement. You just have to frame it properly.

re: #108 HappyWarrior

You know though by acting this way, Langone only furthers what far leftists say about capitalists and capitalism. This is kind of related to the argument often made that FDR in fact saved capitalism with the New Deal rather than destroyed it.

I’ll note that those who are most opposed to Marxism agree with its central hypothesis: that capitalism will pursue profits and power no matter who gets hurt. The only difference is they see this as a good thing, and that the class war this behaviour provokes will be won by them rather than the poor.

Minor difference.
