Here’s to gay pride floats in the Rose Bowl parade, legal weed, and the President failing yet again to destroy the country by allowing the Dow to reach new records.

Oh, and that ACA thing where needy people get better health care and everybody else whines about it.

Here’s to people figuring out the sinister dark side behind all those RW talking points.

Oh, and that ACA thing where needy people get better health care and everybody else whines about it.

I was one of those after being cancelled by my former health insurance company on account of being so rude to get cancer and insist that they hold up their end of the contract b y actually paying some of the bills. I was unable to purchase new insurance at any cost after that.

I now have insurance again thanks to ACA! I cannot describe the relief.

But this is funny (or pathetic or both). The other day I got an email asking me to fill out a survey about my experience with the Healthcare markeplace website and stuff. I rated the questions and filled out the comment box as requested. Clicked the thingie to send it off when I was done - linkee no workee. Seriously dudes?!

Heard Andy Williams (no, not the singer), owner of The Medicine Man pot store in CO, talking about sales of legal pot today on NPR. Says they sell it for 30% over medicinal marijuana. Evidently, The Medicine Man is the largest retailer of pot in CO.

You could practically hear Williams drooling over the radio at the profits he’s going to be making. No doubt a Republican who loves pot.

Matt Taibbi:
On Christmas, Republicans Quietly Declare War on Themselves

“…If you spend years letting your voters think Saddam Hussein was an agent of al-Qaeda, that passing a national health care program will result in the formation of Stalinist “death panels,” or that Barack Obama is secretly a foreigner, you’re going to end up with some loopy candidates prone to saying crazy things that will turn off voting majorities, which in turn will make it hard to deliver the policy objectives you actually care about for your big-money donors.

The Republican establishment is only just figuring this out. Hence this new $50 million initiative, which according to the WSJ will involve the Chamber working with party leaders in “an aggressive effort to groom and support more centrist Republican candidates.”

CONSERVATISM: People are so dumb they’ll believe anything we say.

(CF bulbs can be had for about $2 each if you buy a bunch at a time, about $3 if you buy them individually. And my CFs have been in for more than six years — in that time, I’ve had to replace two of them — or possibly just the one, I don’t really remember. My electricity bills went down by about 25% too.)

16 Mattand  Wed, Jan 1, 2014 11:36:38am

Saw the final Cinematic Titanic live performance on Monday at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA (just outside of Philly). Other than the shithead behind me trying to get Joel to trash Mike Nelson during a Q&A, it was a great show.

One of the things that struck me was what skilled comedians the whole CT crew are. Not just with the riffing, but with the actual live and filmed bits they performed. They could easily give SNL, the Groundlings, Second City, etc., a run for the money.

One thing that has caught me by surprise is the amount of people in their 20’s and 30’s who are fans of the show. Kind makes feel better that in my advancing decrepitude, there’s people who still share my sense of humor.

Hikeeba, everyone, and Happy New Year!

Did a CFLs for a couple years, but am jumping straight to mostly LEDs now. They’re still expensive, but coming down, and the lumens have finally caught up. Cheaper to operate than CFL, and have better color temperature. An added payback for older people is elimination of the need to climb a ladder to replace high fixtures. None of mine should burn out before I do.

Duke Energy will send you a free case if you call them. Don’t know if they still have them, though. I have enough to last me for years. The expensive ones will be the globe type for the bathroom (six 40 watt bulbs but I’m going w/LEDs if I can find them).

I can’t claim 25%, and our electric provider has actually been lowering rates the last few years, but our overall usage is definitely down.

No complaints here about CFLs, but then again, I apparently hate freedom and America.

Something to think about for the future, maybe — when my current CFs and the replacements in the closet run out. If ever. The price should be lower by then, too.

Good thing I don’t mind the color temperature (I have about half “warm white” and the others “cool white” and I don’t notice a difference from the old incandescents. )

Yeah, I’m only changing out as needed unless I hit a good sale. IIRC the last (bright) 65w were about $12 at Lowes. Seems to be a good range of color temps, indicated by a spectrum in that packaging.

More butthurt from Greenwald. Seems to me that if you’re traveling internationally (and that includes entering the US), you are subject to searches. This even happened back in the early 1960s when I lived in CA, esp coming back over the border (people smuggling in contraband was pretty routine back then, too). Your car and your person could be searched along with any passengers. Once again, law is trying to keep up with technology, and while technology may be a few steps ahead of the law, they get upset when the law comes down against them.

Greenwald is still smarting over Miranda’s detention at Heathrow—you can tell.

Not everyone coming into the country by car from Mexico or Canada is a day tripping tourist. It’s just that kind of world these days.

Where’s the problem? I thought that the unfettered capitalism and free markets the GOP worship were all about corporations going for the cheapest labor possible so they could see higher returns on investment, higher profits, and higher stock prices. That IS the goal, after all.

Why not celebrate all that labor going overseas? You’re sticking it to the evil unions and crushing organized labor so that workers will accept gruel and crumbs and be grateful to have a job at all. It’s GOP Econ 101.

You can find a lot of public domain books on iTunes and Amazon. I got Smith’s Wealth of Nations and Moral Sentiments,, De Toqueville’s volumes on Democracy in America along with all of Edgar Rice Burrough’s Barsoom and Tarzan books.

Also check out Smashwords. Lots of free ebooks there. But be warned, many of them are worth their list price. The spelling, grammar and formatting of them is…creative.

10) Cocoa frog… and friends: A research team in the South American country of Suriname came back this year with an astounding report of nearly 60 potentially new animal species, including six frogs, one snake and 11 fish. The cocoa frog is named for its chocolate-hued skin. The team also found a tiny ruby-colored beetle with antler-like antennae, dubbed the Lilliputian beetle; and a golden tetra fish with red eyes.

Not going to happen. Egypt’s generals aren’t that stupid. They know how much of their toys are bought by the US, and they know going after Hillary Clinton would turn the US hostile very quickly.

Their leader, Oleh Tyahnybok:

“In 2004, Tyahnybok was kicked out of former President Viktor Yushchenko’s parliamentary faction for a speech calling for Ukrainians to fight against a “Muscovite-Jewish mafia” - using two highly insulting words to describe Russians and Jews - and emphasising that Ukrainians had in the past fought this threat with arms.

“In 2005, he signed an open letter to Ukrainian leaders, including President Yushchenko, calling for the government to halt the “criminal activities” of “organised Jewry”, which, the letter said, was spreading its influence in the country through conspiratorial organisations as the Anti-Defamation League - and which ultimately wanted to commit “genocide” against the Ukrainian people.”

Maybe you can find out who he really is instead of basing your assumptions on one (1) word you see in his profile. This can be accomplished by either a) reading his time line and/or b) reading his blog. He’s also from Dubai, i.e. a foreign country, where people’s one word identification may not be on the same page as the American definition. Suffice it to say, he’s not some libertarian from Texas. A Guns.com writer posts his 10 New Year’s resolutions for gun owners

9. I will take a woman to the range

Women are under-represented in the shooting world, which is unfortunate. I will do my part and find a woman who wants to start shooting but needs a hand getting involved with guns.

Introducing women to guns is a lot different than with men. Bring a gun or two, a bunch of snap caps and no real ammo. Highlight the fact that there will be no chance of someone getting hurt; it will remove a lot of tension. Start with disabling, unloading and disassembling the gun. It’s all about laying down a fundamental understanding of guns first.

Don’t lecture, don’t start with the four rules and there will be no quiz at the end. No pressure and take your time. Encourage questions and don’t interrupt.

This advice has other applications, but that’s not gun-related.

You don’t even have a gun, isn’t that going to be hard to explain to a woman when you get her to the range?

174 ObserverArt  Wed, Jan 1, 2014 1:44:44pm

I’m late to some of the comments, but I wanted to say something about the flag and how it flies on the breath of the soldiers. And this is totally my opinion, I only wonder if others think similarly.

As a boy during the late 50s and early 60s, I played with the little plastic army men. I had models of tanks and aircraft. I had toy guns and played soldiers and watched Combat on TV.

And then somewhere around the late 60s after my one brother was drafted at the height of the Viet Nam war and I was now just into my early teens and under the influences of the times, rock music, drugs, social change, protests, etc., everything changed. The play stopped and reality set in.

I think it all had to do withe me realizing I at one time romanticized war and everything around it. And then I realized, there is not one damn thing romantic about war. How could there be? It is people killing each other, many times for things not even in their control and at the bidding of others who wouldn’t have their own involved.

And there are so many strange dichotomies involved. The man that is seen as brave and noble is the guy that stood and fought and died doing it. The man that took off and ran and saved his life is seen as the coward. Are they both what we think they are or are they the opposite? What does religion say about both? And if we are found fighting over God, what God is into man killing man? How can you be godly and a warrior, and to even ask God to protect you as you work to take out others?

I think I’ll always just go with the thought of an old Ohio legend warrior, General William Tecumseh Sherman who cautioned his new charges to be wary of their zeal to use what they were taught at the Military Academy and to realize the horrors of war with the simple words: War is Hell. Yes it is. And so much of our society rails against hell, but loves to think about going to war, or to think there was some glory in any of it.

The whole concept of war and warriors is one thing about man that I will never comprehend. Do I understand how it comes about and how other can get caught up in the glory of it? Yes. But I question if they really understand what it is to be hell-like.

And about the breath of the fallen soldiers, I think it sad that they no longer breathe and really can’t move that flag one bit any longer. And that is just unreal to me that others would make a symbol out of something that no longer can happen due to the nature of war. I’d much sooner have them around another day. That is romantic. That is something I can celebrate with them.

Sigh. I’m sorry…such gloom on a new years day!

A Guns.com writer posts his 10 New Year’s resolutions for gun owners

10. I will listen to an anti-gunner then try to get them into shooting

This is the tough one. I might have to bite my lip. A lot.

The majority of anti-gun types are afraid of guns, and facts and statistics will never be able to break down a wall of fear. There simply is no argument that will be able to overcome this and you can’t force someone to change their mind.

But I can plant a seed. Nod my head, hold my tongue and wait it out. We’ve heard it all before, it’s not going to kill us.

Only an interest in guns will topple that fear, and the fastest, best and easiest way to get someone interested in shooting is to put a gun in their hands. It really works.

Yeah, the bulb’s real cheap. But you’re paying for it in much much higher electric bills and replacement costs for bulbs that don’t last.

CFL doesn’t cost $6+ for a standard 60-75 or even 100 watt equivalent. Maybe $3. And you’ll end up saving the difference within a few months. Over the life of the CFL, you’ll save considerably. Even more if you switch to LED.

It pretty much exemplifies the wingnut mentality: penny smart, pound foolish. Money “saved” on the cost of bulb is all that matters to them, not that they’ve got to buy new bulbs every other month or that the heat those bulbs are putting out is money out of their pocket when the next electric bill comes.

Liberal tears: caring for those murdered or commit suicide by use of firearms.

Yeah, Rep. Stockman has no problem adding to the body count by blocking even the most modest of efforts to reduce the homicide and suicide rates in the country due to firearms.

Moreover, he ignores that the states where gun control laws are most lax suffer from the highest homicide and suicide rates due to firearms.

The analysis reveals that the five states with the highest per capita gun death rates were Alaska, Louisiana, Montana, Alabama, and Wyoming. Each of these states had a per capita gun death rate far exceeding the national per capita gun death rate for the 50 states of 10.25 per 100,000 for 2010. Each state has lax gun laws and higher gun ownership rates. By contrast, states with strong gun laws and low rates of gun ownership had far lower rates of firearm-related death. Ranking last in the nation for gun death was Hawaii, followed by Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New York. (See rankings below for top and bottom five states. See vpc.org for a ranking of all 50 states.)

VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand states, “The equation is simple. More guns lead to more gun death, but limiting exposure to firearms saves lives.” The total number of Americans killed by gunfire rose to 31,672 in 2010 from 31,347 in 2009.

I stopped using incandescent bulbs years ago. Not that I have a zillion LEDs. Anyway, they’re hard to break, last years, and are supper low in the wattage department. You tip over a lamp with an incandescent bulb and those things break easily. Hard to break an LED even though I did that once. Could care less about warm up time because they’re so low on the draw you don’t really have to turn them off as much.

What these folks always ignore is that most rapes are carried out by acquaintances to the victim; they’re family, dates, spouses, etc.

They aren’t some stranger off the street. So while that’s the image they hope to conjure, having firearms in the mix is likely to mean that the spouse/acquaintance/family member will have access to firearms while carrying out the rape.

Another disturbing trend is unpaid internships, sometimes required by degree programs. When I got my degree, an unpaid intern position was unheard of. If you want college credit, you may even have to pay for the privilege.

Yeah I’ve noticed that too. I’m in one now actually.

I have never understood how one can live a life of constant paranoia. If you’re that worried that your iPhone might be used as a tool by the NSA to spy on you, then don’t buy one.

Kind of reminds me of that South Park episode. Cartman’s talking real loudly for the whole world to hear him and he gets pissed when Kyle calls him out on it.

Which is largely the point, the idea of a gun as a magic talisman that wards off evil is foolish. I’d sooner give my hypothetical daughter a can of mace or a taser than give her a gun and expect her to be ready for anything she may encounter.

Yeah, Dim Jim is mourning the loss of incandescent bulbs, even though the replacements last longer, use less power, and mean more savings over time.

Why mourn something that isn’t nearly as good as its replacements (either CFL or LED)?

Right and here’s another thing that this guy ignores. What’s to say that a hypothetical rapist isn’t going to overpower the young woman and take her weapon. I have no problem with people having guns for self-defense purposes but this delusion, yes delusion that arming more people will stop violent crime is stupid.

The main long term danger to gun ownership is that non-owners will increasingly see gun owners as dangerous, fantasy-prone crazy people, religious fanatics, and fascist agitators.

Where would they such an idea anyway?////

Besides your average teen doesn’t need to work. I had a couple jobs in my teens but I was mostly focused on school. And as I said, maybe employers should swallow their pride and be willing to pay teenagers a little more.

When I was a teenager (back in the 60s), I was working first, at age 14, as a dishwasher for 30 cents an hour. Then at age 16, I got promoted to waitress at 60 cents an hour.
Every week, my paycheck got signed over to my mother to help pay the family household bills.
And I had SS deducted from each and every one of those paychecks.

Gutenberg is free domain stuff. But there’s a lot of really good stuff there: Dickens, Sinclair Lewis, William Makepeace Thackery, Jack London, Updike Sinclair, loads of classic stuff you’ve probably never heard of but really good reading.

Also, my library has lots of new releases in the regular library section via overdrive.com all you need is a library card set up for internet access. You don’t even need an e-reader, you can read the books on your computer or tablet.

Went and saw The Hobbit, came back and finally got my new grinder mounted. I’m probably going to build a new mounting platform at some time since I’m not 100% happy with what I’ve currently got, but it will do fine for now. (and if it works out ok, it may be a case of ‘Temporary becoming Permanent’.

Think I’m going to stream me a movie and just chill out with the rest of the lizardim.
