The First in a series of short films, providing viewers with a window into natural habitats found in the UK through the use of cinematography.

The film was shot in September 2013 in Argyll forest park. All footage was shot in raw on the 50D and 5D mkii - thanks to the magic lantern hack.

Footage was debayered using AE to Prores 444, edited in PrPro & exported. Audio is a mixture of foley sound and audio recorded in camera.

Spent a lot of time in the Highlands, there are few video or photo images of it that do it justice.

Right away when I heard about the Pew poll, I turned to the results to see what the explanation was for the interesting — truly! — “shift” in Republican view: Were Republicans changing their positions on creationism or creationists changing their party allegiance?

And right away I ran into this logical inconsistency.

Surely, someone will clear this up, I thought.

But no.

Just the same predictable, boring “ha ha ha ha!” reaction.

Why let something as silly as logic get in the way of an opportunity to pound one’s tribal chest & join in a unifying, polarizing group howl?

re: #2 Killgore Trout

About that Pew poll on Republicans and evolution….
Have Republicans changed views on evolution? Or have creationists changed party? Pew’s (half-released) numbers don’t add up

…it’s lame because this sort of deliberate selectivity (make no mistake, it was deliberate: Pew made the decision to include the partisan breakdown for only half of the bifurcated evolution-belief item) subsidizes the predictable “ha ha ha!” response on the part of the culturally partisan commentators who will see the survey as a chance to stigmatize Republicans as being distinctively “anti-science.”

Uh - Republicans ARE distinctively anti-science, no scare quotes. I don’t see how that’s even debatable.

I’m wondering if the amount of Democrats that refuse to accept evolution is so small as to be statistically insignificant.

Which, admittedly, should be reported either way. At the same time, Democrats have not promoted/wallowed in anti-science these last few decades the way the GOP has.

Evening Lizardim. Bloody cold, this - 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) and a wind chill dropping down towards -10 degrees F (-23 degrees C). And I was out in it getting the Mrs. Fish’s Fishmobile prepped and ready should she need or want to take the fishspawn out to her mother’s tomorrow. But, it started right up and purred like the great big black iron kitten it is, so at least it’s reliable, if a bit weathered. How go things among the lizardfolk on this New Year’s night?

Hundreds of Highlanders settled in the mountains of NC in the 1700s colonial period—it reminded them of “home”. Some of their descendants organized the Highland Games at Grandfather Mtn (a private mountain); it’s been held for almost 60 yrs.

I’ve never been; never had an interest. I mean, it’s been over 250 yrs already. If I wanted to visit Scotland, I’d go there, not NC.

Kinda funny, but truth be told, in many instances, those companies fine print allows them to sell and / or share customer provided info.
When using a companies online ordering feature(s) at times you may be able to hit a checkbox to prompt out of that, but as stated, look at the fine print

In other news, the City of Minneapolis rang in the New Year in style - that is to say, with a 3-alarm fire that engulfed an apartment complex downtown in the mid-morning hours. The article mentions that firefighters struggled in the bitter freezing cold, with the water freezing on everything it touched (except the fire, of course). The blaze is still under investigation and there are still some people unaccounted for. Several victims were in critical condition, so my thoughts and prayers are with Minneapolis and her injured residents tonight.

I can’t imagine what it would be like fighting a fire in sub-zero type weather. That’s got to be one of the most miserable experiences I can imagine. Crabbing in the Bering Sea would rank up there too.

I did it once ,,,, can’t even describe the cold. When we lived in Boston, we had a small cottage on an island off the coast of Portland Maine. We were visiting friends there (they live on the island fulltime ,,,, our cottage was summer only) one February. A house near them caught fire late one afternoon/ early evening. The island has two fire trucks but staffed by volunteers (of which my friend was one) So I went and helped ,,, MISERABLE ,,, I can’t even imagine doing it in those climes as a profession

The guy doesn’t have a point.
The move toward YEC beliefs is reflected in the poll, and the breakdown between theistic/naturalistic is applicable to both Republican and Democrat numbers, there is no bias.

We aren’t given the numbers of how many Dems believe a natural evolution but neither are we told how many Reps believe a natural evolution.

In any case, that does not reflect on the numbers given for pure theistic beliefs.

The pew polls is also an outlier from other polls such as Gallup, Yougov and harris. I think there are enough problems to be wary of Pew’s results. I assume we both agree that Republicans have a problem with acceptance of science, I think it weakens our criticism to rely on factually questionable polls. This seems like those reports on scientific research papers that proclaim “Conservatives/Liberals are psychologically defective, more likely to have had potty training difficulty”. The reports are easy to manufacture and an easy way to get a lot of traffic but they aren’t sound science.

But it isn’t a factually questionable poll. The information is narrower than it should be for a serious analysis, but the numbers it gives are not pushed to either side by poor quality questions. Any shortcomings apply to all the data equally.

The Times report did name some of its sources. that’s part of its credibility. As an example, the leader of the Libyan militia hired by the consulate admitted on the record he ordered his men who were there to cut and run when the attack got started.

That’s a lot more credible than a story where none of the sources were willing to go on the record.

Looking at the 07 Gallup poll for Rpublicans it was 30% evolution 68% not. I’m not sure that Pew poll is specifically flawed, I haven’t been able to look at any cross-tabs on it. The fact that only 1/2 the people were asked their political preference shouldn’t make a huge difference, other than possibly changing the margin of error a bit. As long as the party affliation question wasn’t asked simply because of a given response. Furthermore, normalizing the data (which I’m sure was done) to accurately reflect party affiliation / age /gender of the population would also help minimize any issues with it.

Wikileaks party. Let that bit sink in a bit.

They fashion themselves a political party. Not merely content to reveal classified information - primarily about the US and US allies, but they’re now pushing a political agenda as a political party.

Their true nature and intentions are being revealed a bit more each day, and it has less and less to do with government transparency and more to do with anti-Americanism.

Just my .02

The problem claimed by the source KT linked was that because those who were not purely theistic were not broken down into ID/naturalistic groups, the numbers favoured the Dems because they make up the majority of that group. They feel that there may be a high number of those in the non-purely theistic group that are IDists who should be included with the purely theistic group. They consider this a bias against the Reps.

However that wasn’t the question being asked. The question being asked was what percentage do not accept evolution.

Arizona man killed son with an ax because he thought the boy was a demon, police say

Investigators said 51-year-old Gary Sherrill, of Phoenix, was afraid of his son, David, and believed the boy was going to eat him.

The teen’s mother asked police to check on the boy Tuesday because her ex-husband had not returned him, as scheduled, and she hadn’t been able to reach either of them by phone.

Sherrill initially told police the boy wasn’t home, but police persuaded him to invite them into the house.

“Once inside, they located the 13-year-old male victim, David Sherrill, deceased with obvious signs of trauma,” Martos said. “Sadly, the victim sustained stab wounds and lacerations to several parts of his body.”

I was thinking about that. A couple problems with outdoor farming;
Only one crop per year. Even in warm climates you can get only one crop because the plants flower with the light cycle of the seasons. Indoor crops can be harvested in cycles about every 10 weeks.
Theft. Even cheap weed is going to attract a lot of thieves
Climate. Outdoor growing is going to be limited to mostly arid areas. Flowers rot easily in the rain. Here in Oregon it’s always a race for the backyard growers to harvest plants before the rain starts. just a few days of early rain and everything is ruined.

Considering the enormous value of the information he has revealed, and the abuses he has exposed, Mr. Snowden deserves better than a life of permanent exile, fear and flight. He may have committed a crime to do so, but he has done his country a great service. It is time for the United States to offer Mr. Snowden a plea bargain or some form of clemency that would allow him to return home, face at least substantially reduced punishment in light of his role as a whistle-blower, and have the hope of a life advocating for greater privacy and far stronger oversight of the runaway intelligence community.

It’s been 47 years since I read “The Hobbit” but I know for sure there was no romance in it between a dwarf guy and an elf girl. I would have totally remembered that because female characters were few and far between. I don’t remember any Lake Town either.

Also why would they use a one-eyed orc as a scout. Yeah he looks badass but he’s BLIND IN ONE EYE.

Also, as I already noticed in the first installment, 48 fps just lets you see how fake the movie sets and actor’s prosthesis are.

NYT: Mr. Snowden told The Washington Post earlier this month that he did report his misgivings to two superiors at the agency, showing them the volume of data collected by the N.S.A., and that they took no action. (The N.S.A. says there is no evidence of this.)

I still find it odd that Snowden managed to be crafty enough to steal what he did, but not smart enough to come away with evidence that he tried to ‘report his misgivings to superiors’ and they didn’t listen.

Here are some of the evul Shintoists of whom Robertson hates and warns us:

Taken at Kasuga Taisha, one of the grand-daddies of still surviving Shinto shrines, established when Robertson’s ancestors were killing each other in the name of their God, back there in Europe.

Kasuga Taisha has been photographed countless millions of times, but still makes a terrific subject for an outing. I spent a couple of years visiting Nara Coen and never tired of the place; if I could have swung the visa (and I couldn’t) I would have retired there and spent the rest of my life working on (among other things) a portfolio dedicated to the park.

Fall is the best time to visit for color:

I’ve got a car question for the engineering people on this board, maybe someone can answer it.

Let’s compare two cars, one new (for example a 25mpg Mazda) and an older Honda Civic CVCC or Geo Metro that averages around 40mpg. Obviously the newer car probably has the better sulfur and smog characteristics per gallon but wouldn’t the higher mpg car have less to pollute in the first place? Aren’t both cars going to release the same amount of CO2 per gallon?

My father and I are trying to find a reasonably clean, high MPG car that is more mechanical in nature and accomplishes this without the aid of electronics but we’re coming to the conclusion that there’s no way to escape the current paradigm unless cars go completely electric.

I can’t believe how backwards cars are in a lot of ways, and I’m even talking about Japanese ones. It shouldn’t be that hard to get a car that outputs its diagnostic information to a USB drive, or places sensors in a user friendly configuration.

Heh, question/rant over.

264 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave of the waffle light)  Thu, Jan 2, 2014 4:04:10am

re: #263 Aqua Obama

only a guess, but I think the CO2 output has to do with the efficiency in which the fuel is burtn. Lower mileage is not just a factor of fuel efficiency, it is also a matter of vehicle size and power-to-weight ratio.

But yes, electric is the way out of this mess, if we had not left Dick Cheney in charge of US energy policy for so long, we might be a lot further along on that.

This is something I don’t understand. There appears to be a lot of libertarian types in the tech industry who carp about “freedom” and “privacy”, but aren’t these the same ones who are rushing like mad to develop controls and intrusions for every aspect of our lives? I can see a revolt against being “connected” every single waking moment of one’s life—I would probably be in the forefront. Every device that is revealed is controlled by a company, a corporation, that will have more control over your life than this government ever thought of having.

Nest Raising Huge New Round From DST, Valuing Smart Home Startup at Upwards of $2 Billion

recode.net

“The souped-up household device, which is designed within an inch of its life, is digitally aware, with a wheel user interface, a Wi-Fi connection, sensors aplenty and an ability to learn your behavioral patterns. On its launch, I called the simple brushed stainless-steel object a “temperature-taking version of an iPod.”

“Nest followed the thermostat with a smoke- and carbon-monoxide detector called Protect, which it launched late last year.

“As I noted then: “Among its other attributes, the smoke alarm will be connected to the thermostat, part of an effort by Nest to create a series of home products that are aware in the home and adapt to the environment and its users, and are controlled by smartphones or tablets.”

Think about your cell phone or its successor (chip of some sort?) as being the “heart” of your existence and controlling every electronic device you own. Scary.

The “current paradigm” is one of slavery leading to utter destruction.

But the world is not particularly concerned about that, so, carry on.

Go with the older vehicle with the higher MPG. The fewer cars you buy in your life is the way to save money, all the more so the fewer new ones. However, there are other variables that matter to some, such as safety and handling.

It’s also that there are a lot of tall men (it’s mostly men) who simply aren’t comfortable in smaller cars, for reasons of legroom or headroom. I can tell you that it’s a lot easier for 6’4” me to get out of an SUV than a Honda compact. I remember reading an article about an old Austin Mini, and one of the commenters insisted that driving kids in it was the same thing as child abuse!

I’ve had plenty of conversations with people who rationalize SUVs and trucks , because they’re “safer”.

Meanwhile, no one really wants to pay for road upkeep.

Even if I wanted one of these, I’d be too distracted by all the electronics to stay concentrated on driving it. I’m going to be totally heart-broken when my 97 Saturn 5 spd gives out completely.

We won’t cut off military aid to Uganda over that law, I feel sure in saying. That nation’s soldiers are simply too important in peace-establishment elsewhere in Africa.

I agree it’s a horrible law and i’d cut non-military aid if it were enacted.

American evangelicals are “living the dream” in Uganda, wouldn’t you say?

Exporting that kind of hate and death under the guise of “christianity” is absolute evil in itself. I hope I’m not the only one who thinks they should pay for their crimes.

re: #278 Dark_Falcon

It’s also that there are a lot of tall men (it’s mostly men) who simply aren’t comfortable in smaller cars, for reasons of legroom or headroom. I can tell you that it’s a lot easier for 6’4” me to get out of an SUV than a Honda compact. I rode in such a Honda recently and while it did have enough headroom, legroom was cramped and would have been a serious problem on a long drive.

Contrary to popular belief, small cars aren’t made exclusively for small people, either. More for people of “average” height.

I’m 5 ft, maybe 5’1” on a good day, and I can tell you, the seat in any car has to be pulled up to its closest proximity to the pedals in order for me to reach them. Sometimes, that results in an uncomfortable situation of the steering wheel being too close to my chest.

re: #263 Aqua Obama

There’s been a change in the way the EPA calculates mpg for vehicles (they changed the tests a few years ago, so the old sticker MPG claims on the older Metro aren’t directly comparable to the newer car mileage claims). The EPA has a comparison site, so you’d be able to see the mileage claims on an even basis.

For instance, a 1998 Chevrolet (ex-Geo) Metro, with manual 5-spd, 3 Cylinders, 1.0 Liters, would get 40mpg combined in the new calculation, but had 46 under the old one.

Cautious as I am, I just cancelled a 10 am appt for my g-grandson and rescheduled for next week. No one around here can drive on ice and it’s a busy road I’d have to be on. Won’t risk it myself, not with a child in the car.

Partial clemency for Snowden?

Really? On what grounds? That he’s done a public service by exposing means and methods about the NSA operating under federal law as enacted by Congress and the President to keep the nation safe after 9/11?

Meanwhile, the private sector continues crowning itself in glory as Skype was hacked by the SEA and Snapchat was hacked exposing account information for more than 4 million people. That’s on top of the millions exposed by the hacking of Target during last year’s Christmas rush.

I’m supposed to be worried about the US government going and tapping my phones (which it isn’t allowed to do and must receive warrants and court approval to do so as a US citizen, but a foreign regime needs no such effort). It’s far more worrisome that someone would hack my accounts or steal economic data to impersonate my identity (open bank accounts, credit cards, etc.) And that all comes from the private sector’s failings to provide adequate security to stay a step ahead of the hackers. Heck, the Target breach showed just how behind US banks and companies are from their European counterparts on credit/debit security issues.

Anyway, I’m a 72 yr old. Regardless of what older people tell you, we lose a lot of our reactions and timing as we get older. Even as good a driver as I think I am, I’ve had a couple of close calls which brought me down to earth, and which were entirely my fault and failing perceptivity, such as the other day when I was in line, had to back up a bit, forgot the car was in reverse, and started off, almost hitting the car in back of me. It was a stupid mistake and a breach in short-term memory. It has made me far more cautious.

Whenever I feel that I no longer have what it takes to be a safe driver, I will give it up and let someone else take over. I’m not stubborn enough to think I can drive as well as I did even 10 yrs ago. It’s not just physical but also mental issues that older people suffer, and the sooner they realize it, the better off we all are.

That’s pretty close to what we pay here in the Czech Republic - close to $8.00 per gallon. And yet everyday, there’s countless cars on the road. Granted, small and fuel-efficient cars, quite a few diesels, LPG conversions, etc. But people still drive.

Running as a centrist makes Clinton a radical. Pushing ideas that are progressive makes him a radical.

Same with DeBlasio. He’s a Democrat in a city that has been dominated by Democrats. Even Bloomberg and Rudy were Democrats before switching party lines to run as GOPers (easier to get through primaries when you don’t have to deal with a crowded field as the Democrats showed just this past year).

I’m rather cautious about what DeBlasio’s going to be able to do. He’s going to do some incremental stuff, but don’t expect city politics/policy suddenly lurch left now that he’s in office, or that the crime rates will spike. Bratton was the guy who helped implement compustat and targeting police to where crime was rampant. His successes laid the groundwork that Kelly built upon and made NYC the safest large city in the nation (and safer regarding firearms deaths on a per-capita basis than many gun-loving states). NYC has a gun death rate of 4 per 100,000. NYS has 5.1 gun deaths per 100,000 people. That’s compared with Texas, which has more than double the state rate. Alabama has more than three times the rate of gun deaths than NYS.

Considering the economic and social renaissance around the city, he’s not going to jeopardize that improvement. He’s going to look to improve things around the margins - improve community policing and reduce reliance on stop and frisk.

Very true; where I live for instance, there’s a tram stop that runs all the way into the downtown core less than 100 ft. from the front door; there’s also two grocery stores, a supermarket, and three late-night (spätkauf, as they say in German) convenience stores all within a 15-minute walk of my apartment.

One of the grocery stores is in a decrepit, crumbling communist-era “shopping center” (lol), which is slated to be torn down and rebuilt later this year - in the meantime, that grocery store will relocate to a vacant spot right across the street. Even more convenience!!

re: #348 Dr Lizardo

Very true; where I live for instance, there’s a tram stop that runs all the way into the downtown core less than 100 ft. from the front door; there’s also two grocery stores, a supermarket, and three late-night (spätkauf, as they say in German) convenience stores all within a 15-minute walk of my apartment.

One of the grocery stores is in a decrepit, crumbling communist-era “shopping center” (lol), which is slated to be torn down and rebuilt later this year - in the meantime, that grocery store will relocate to a vacant spot right across the street. Even more convenience!!

That’s one of the reasons I loved living in Manhattan, even if it was for a short period. I lived in this bldg for 3 mos before it became a hotel, it was still single rooms with a few “studios”—much nicer now than it used to be and it caters to Europeans looking for cheaper lodging, I think. tripadvisor.com

Fruitarianism is a real thing.

Impractical, unhealthy, and ridiculous, but still a thing.

I always thought a balanced diet with variety and moderation, along with reasonable caloric intake, was the best way to go.

My eating habits have improved somewhat from when I was 18 (I’m 32 now), but my activity level and caloric intake really hasn’t. In 14 years, I’ve only fluctuated a total of about 10lbs in weight.

I know some of that is genetics/metabolism, but proper calorie intake counts for a lot.

A lot of people don’t seem to realize that, in most case, you need less food to meet your needs than you think you do.

The really gung-ho older vegetarians I ever saw didn’t look healthy to me. The young ones looked OK, who hadn’t been on an extreme kind of diet for long, and you’re going to have energy when you’re young anyway, even if you have a shitty diet.

Considering the economic and social renaissance around the city, he’s not going to jeopardize that improvement. He’s going to look to improve things around the margins - improve community policing and reduce reliance on stop and frisk.

I somehow missed during the campaign that he wants to get rid of the horse-drawn carriages, I only became aware of it the last couple of days. I’m irritated about it, I want the carriages and horses to remain.

(upon investigation, I discover that while it’s PETA making the most noise about the poor sad horses breathing city air — the entire effort is funded by a real estate developer who wants the stables. Large lot, prime location, blah blah, surprise).

I kicked around a story idea awhile back called “Jesus 2000” where basically, Jesus would actually come back to earth but no one would believe that it’s actually him and even though he starts doing miracles and what not, they think he’s some kind of demon or freak or whatever and he is eventually arrested and the plan is to subject him to scientific tests to determine who or what he actually is and of course politically there is much tension between Christians, Muslims and Jews over who this man actually is (and yes, this plot is meant to echo the New Testament concerns about Jesus).

The idea behind REAL ID is to let the states maintain their right to design their own drivers’ licenses and ID cards, but maintain a consistent set of metrics/design elements to make it more consistent for law enforcement and security purposes (enacted after 9/11). He pulled better than 20% of the black vote, just by treating black voters, black presidents and black mayors exactly the same way he treats white voters, white presidents and white mayors. He didn’t even have to be nice to them; he just had to acknowledge that they’re entitled to exist.

He must see them as human beings. Why is that so fucking hard for the rest of the Republicans?

re: #465 Lidane

Winter. How does that work?

Let’s just ignore long term trends that the global climate temperatures are increasing, that ocean temps are increasing, and that warmer weather can paradoxically lead to more snow and extreme weather (for instance, slightly warmer weather means that the Great Lakes wont freeze over as fast, meaning that those downwind will see far greater and longer lake-effect snow seasons due to the fact that the lake effect snow requires the lakes to have not frozen over. Warmer temperatures mean that more moisture can be held in the air, meaning more precipitation of all kinds, including snow.

Greater temperature differentials between warm and cold air masses means greater chances for severe weather like tornadoes.

That’s what the science says. It’s not mysticism or belief. The science behind those mechanisms in atmospheric science are well-known.

How come, in 2014, we still don’t have a widely-supported animated image format with real alpha transparency and decent compression?

we should keep in mind that we will live our entire lives in a primitive period of computing technology

when i told my colleagues this back in 1985, they laughed at me, since they all had on their desks the incredibly advanced IBM PC running DOS, which we had actually connected with other PCs and a file server box to create an advanced cutting edge technological solution known as a “local area network”

I never came up with an ending though.

Just kill him off like the original did. Maybe a rightwing gun nut, have them shooting him on a New York street like John Lennon was.

Bill doesn’t have the aggressiveness to handle Ham and his GG. Quite a few knowledgeable people have gone against the GG and had problems because they aren’t used to thinking in short soundbites. To explain why points of the GG are wrong can take a fair bit of science knowledge that many science people feel compelled to review.

That allows the creationists to rack up points faster than the answers can rebut them.
