We’re just going to get very cold w/winds. “Feels like” 1 deg tonight w/gusts up to 40 mph. Only a high in the mid-30s tomorrow. But no snow. The rain has stopped but whatever is laying about will freeze over for sure. It could be a mess in the back with all the trees we have.

Here’s hoping your trees stay where they are, and all in one piece!

I ran out to the store earlier and heard the weatherman on the radio say that temps will be between 0 and 10 below here tomorrow night - before the wind chill kicks in. I’m so happy I don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow night!

We’re looking at bad temps Sun night through Wed, Monday forecasted high is 8, low is 3. Sunday and Tue Night lows around 10. I know it’s not “Great White North” cold, but hey, it’s Tennessee.

Car got a new battery 6 months ago, cooling system pressure tested, flushed and filled 2 months ago, I’ve got a little trickle charger / maintainer I’ll hook up at night. Doesn’t really charge a dead battery, but just that tiny bit of current help keeps it warm. I’ve also got a 350 cranking amp jump start box.

I rented 2 Japanese cars (a Nissan and a Toyota) prior to acquiring my Chevy Malibu last fall. The rentals were for trips down to fish country and back, for fuel economy reasons. I liked the high technology of the Japanese engines, but the cars themselves I don’t really trust all that much. My Malibu is much more tangible.

Facebook Sued Over Alleged Scanning of Private Messages

bloomberg.com

“Facebook Inc. (FB) was sued over allegations it systematically intercepts its users private messages on the social network and profits by sharing the data with advertisers and marketers.

“When users compose messages that include links to a third-party website, Facebook scans the content of the message, follows the link and searches for information to profile the message-sender’s Web activity, violating the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and California privacy and unfair competition laws, according to the suit.

“The practice compromises privacy and undermines Facebook’s promise of “unprecedented” security options for its messaging function, two Facebook users said in the complaint filed in federal court in San Jose, California. “

But did they read the Terms of Service? : )

Doing alright. Have a killer headache because the weather is about to get wacky - low of -10 degrees F (-23 degrees C) tonight, then up to 20 degrees F (-6.7 degrees C) for a high over the next couple of days, then down to the aforementioned -30 degrees F on Sunday night. I am exhausted and have little hope of getting to catch up on sleep any time soon, but I am content.

I remember in Alaska. At -40 you can take a hot cup of coffee, toss it up in the air, you hear what almost sounds like a rifle crack, and frozen coffee crystals hit the ground.

I remember getting frostbite in my fingers when without thinking I took my gloves off and touched the engine in the truck for just a few seconds while doing an inspection.

Aldrich Ames is a weird case. He had a number of bad evals, negative letters in his jacket. His lifestyle was WAY in excess of his income. Everything I learned in the Army about people who may be a potential security risk he demonstrated in excess.

Ames did serious and measurable damage to the US and his actions cost lives directly. I think Snowden is no better.

Puck Magazine. Out of the Puck Building.

Once the printing facility of J. Ottmann Lithographing Company and Puck Magazine, which ceased publication in 1918, the building later housed numerous independent printing firms and related printing services such as type setters and a printing ink company, Superior Printing Ink. The odor of printing ink permeated the building for many years. An office stationery company, S. Novick & Son, once occupied the second floor. Notable amongst the firms’ salesmen was Alger Hiss, the former assistant Secretary of State who was brought down in a spy scandal in the 1950s.

In the 1980s, the Puck Building was the home of Spy Magazine, whose editors informally dubbed it “The Spy Building”. In the early 2000s, the building housed the Manhattan Center of Pratt Institute.

My entire experience with Wyoming was a short stay in Gillette, about which the less said, the better.

I will add, however, that any place where you’re looking for work and the local employment office tells you that in order to get a job working in the oil fields you really need to go to the bars and taverns is best experienced in one’s rear view mirror.

Not an exact quote — it was over 30 years ago, after all — but it went something like “You have to go to one of the local bars when the crew is getting off work. Find out who the crew supervisor is and say “I want to be a worm,” which was the term they used for oil field newbies.

My buddy and I went to one such pub, and as soon as we walked in the place, it was like every freaking eyeball in the place was locked on us.

We each had one beer, and then left.

Apparently, we did not want to be worms.

Moral of the story. All the people on their fainting couch about pot now being legal in Colorado also thought the Iraq War was neato.

Also. It’s not true. You can’t smoke pot “anywhere and everywhere.” You can’t smoke outdoors. It’s not for minors and not for resale. Drug testing laws still apply with marijuana so if you’re employer doesn’t want you to be a pot smoker you can still get fired if you fail a drug test. All the other drug testing laws applied to transportation operators also apply. Additionally, there are also DWI limits that also still apply.

My hunch, a small to moderate increase in users short term, simply because it’s now legal. 6 months down the road, I doubt that the number of smokers will be significantly increased.

I don’t think this is the end of civilization as we know it, it’s funny that the party that wants individual responsibility and minimal govt interference in how people live their lives seems to not extend that courtesty to people who choose to smoke weed. (among others)

No doubt Republicans are making a case for another Benghazi, in advance, as this situation develops in South Sudan.

South Sudan ceasefire talks open in Ethiopia

bbc.co.uk

“Meanwhile, the US is moving out some of its embassy staff from South Sudan.

“The state department announced a “further drawdown” of its embassy in Juba, and said it would no longer be providing consular services to US citizens in the country.

“It also urged citizens to leave on an evacuation flight from Juba “to the nearest safe haven country” on Friday.”

Of course the Republicans will second-guess anything that might occur because they’re not in power.

I really hate hard drugs because I’ve seen what they can do to people, but I hate poverty more because it sometimes drives otherwise good people to them destroying their lives in various ways.

Drug raids seize 3 tonnes of crystal meth in single Guangdong village

scmp.com

“He added that Boshe was the most notorious area for drugs in Lufeng, with more than a fifth of households linked to production and trafficking rings.

“Provincial police deputy director Guo Shaobo said it was the province’s largest drug bust in terms of arrests, drugs and raw materials seized. It also represented the broadest co-operation among government units.

“Lufeng has a long history of producing drugs since the 1990s. More than half the 500 prisoners in the city’s detention centre were involved in drug-related crimes, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported. It said Lufeng was an impoverished area where most of the farmland was sandy.”

Imagine more than a fifth of households in your neighborhood involved in the production of drugs because there is no other way to make money. It’s mind-boggling.

So, by the best estimates Josh Marshall and the guys at TPM have been able to put together, the total number of people who the ACA has helped in some way (private insurance policies, Medicaid expansion, kids under 26) sits at roughly 10 million Americans. He also notes that, had over half the country not been so fucking dumb as to refuse the Medicaid expansion, the number could be sitting at 15 million.

Something tells me that, when the negotiations over the debt ceiling have to begin in a couple weeks , the demands to repeal the law are only going to be more shrill.

To hear the wingnuts tell it, Boehner’s getting ready to undermine all they’ve achieved (yeah, I know, same BS as before) because he’s considering a big push to get the Senate immigration reform bill passed in the House before primary season is over. This will no doubt happen to the accompaniment of squealing from the House GOP conservative caucus, so you can bet the wingnuts are already threatening “punishment” on any Republican who even considers for a second buying into “amnesty.”

Meth is becoming a “thing” now in rural China, as it has in rural America. There have been some drug smugglers caught bringing the stuff into Hong Kong and Southeast Asia from Guangdong.

The reasons are the same as they are in the USA. Lack of jobs for poorly educated people, low paying jobs, a feeling of being trapped, and promise of a quick buck for those who want to risk making the stuff.

That’s accurate. Most of the meth produced in NC is in the foothills/mtns here in NC where poverty abounds and you can find isolated properties, such as this one, to hide your mfg. Plus, counties where textile and furniture mfg has, ironically, gone to China, like Burke and Wilkes.

No, but if this description is any indication, I’d take it with a grain of salt. This area is dicey, a sort of neo-hippie-ish part of town which I lived in more than 40 yrs ago (it was not quite like this). Yuppies moved in to gentrify the area but most have left after making their money. Lots of rentals. “1 block” from Central on Thomas Ave would be in a very older commercial area. Central is a main drag leading to downtown.

Sorry, forgot the link: airbnb.com

On a wingnut note, the loon in my Facebook feed has been posting ACA “horror stories” nonstop. I’m guessing that, as with Benghazi, there will be a core of maniacs who will believe with absolute certainty that ACA has destroyed the country, facts be damned. I just wonder how large that core will be, because at some point, the insurance companies who are making big bucks off the program, and have built an infrastructure tied up in the program, are going to tell the GOP to give it up, and we’ll see yet another battle between the ostensibly sane ones like Boehner and Ryan, and the Khmer Rouge faction.

God, I hope not!

AFAIK, libertarianism and Randian thought (as it were) have not made much headway in China. Asian culture for the most part is about family and community, looking for out for your family first, then friends, neighbors and fellow townspeople. Which is not to say that the ultra-rich in China don’t lack a streak of nastiness in them. Some of them are as self-serving as any of Rand’s characters, but I chalk that up to greed and the traditional stratification of Chinese society — the mandarin effect.

That’s the biggest reason for her likely long sentence, to be sure. Her actions were too much in the ‘thrill kill’ vein, and prosecutors and judges tend to have no sympathy for such people.

The other issue is that for DoJ anti-terrorism prosecutors she is the Great White Defendant. They do not wish to incur charges of racism by having a blond-haired white woman in a high-profile by given a lenient sentence when a South Asian man would face a harsh sentence.

I think what would happen if forbid Obama were to be assassinated, we’d hear whining from the right about the funeral or about anything in general tat would point out that such an event would be tragic. Or they’d do their usual try to blame the left for it even though they’ve hated Obama from the minute he first came on to the national scene.

First of all, there is no “mass surveillance” in western societies. No one from the govt is looking over your shoulder 24/7. These academics would do well to question the companies that do business on the internet first, instead of assuming their countries are “spying” on them.

It would depend on who was seen to have done the deed. If the president or a high official was killed by a foreign force, such as a radical Islamist group, no US organization would be blamed. The Tea Party would also not be blamed if the assassin was someone with a history of opposition to conservatism.

What I’ve read agrees with your analysis. China is seriously worried about North Korea either coming unglued or starting a war, neither of which China wants. Thus they’ve been trying to reign North Korea in, to which Kim Jong Un responded by executing one of their biggest supporters within NK. He’s made it clear he’s not willing to listen to reason.

Kinda skeptical of this, just as I’m, er, skeptical about the official North Korean story about Kim Jong Il’s nativity, which reads like a plagiarized version of the Jesus nativity story, except on Mount Paekdu instead of in Bethlehem. It sounds like the kind of ridiculous propaganda that North Korea is famous for.

I’m betting they just put the uncle up against a wall and fired away.

It can only remain speculation , as I cannot imagine anyone ever finding a source that would be both reliable and verifiable.

I drank a lot of Utica Club back in the day, even long necks!

FX Matt is still there, pumping out lots of brews, but they do a lot more contract work for craft breweries (like Brooklyn Beer) these days, and don’t produce nearly as much Utica Club.

That being said, if I’m going to drink a cheap beer from a can, I’d rather a Utica Club (or Genny Cream Ale) than Budweiser, Miller, or Coors.

I’ve read some analysis that says that the fact that the Chinese press reported this in detail shows that they are very displeased with NK right now. FWIW

I would not be surprised at all if some type of “accident” didn’t occur to KJ-3 during the next year. I think he truly believes that they could win a war, and is willing to have his country die trying. I’ve felt that his father KNEW that they would be crushed, but was a master at dancing at the edge of the line.

RBS

I have read that whatever the downside to the Iraq war may have been, the North Korean leadership was glued to the TV coverage of a small but well armed nation being run over like a speed bump by the US. It gave them pause. That generation is gone and delusions of grandeur may have emerged again.

408 HappyWarrior  Fri, Jan 3, 2014 9:56:04am

I digress though. Right wing family values means disowning that gay relative, scoring the daughter who gets pregnant before she’s married, and looking down on the relative who doesn’t stay with the family religion.

Mornin’, all.

Late to the Bonnie Raitt party, but this one’s a lovely end-of-the-relationship ballad written by Stephen Bruton, a duet with Willie Nelson:

Youtube Video

This, by the way, is from one of the finest albums I’ve ever heard. Duets with Dylan, Bonnie and Sinnead O’Connor. Beautiful Don Was production. Perfect cover choices — this one, the title track (Across the Borderline, a Cooder/Hiatt comp), two superb Paul Simon covers (American Tune and Graceland). And, a startlingly gorgeous take on Peter Gabriel’s Don’t Give Up (with Sinnead) that sounds like it was written just for Willie. Hell, all of them sound like they were written with him in mind.

Call it my Happy New Year gift!

Every time I see crap like this, I think back to Benjamin Franklin’s writings where he was freaking out about the fabric of society being destroyed by swarthy hordes of “non-white” immigrants.

The “non-white” immigrants he feared? Protestant Germans. Seriously. And he wrote this in the 1760s, before there even was a Real ‘Murka to destroy.

This silliness too, shall pass. And 50 years from now, some bigot with the last name “Lopez” will be railing against the next group of immigrants to pollute Real ‘Murka’s purity.

And he misses the fact that the GOP is doing a damn fine job of becoming a regional white party all on its own. They don’t need swarthy hordes of invading brown people for that. The GOP just needs to keep moving further and further to the right and they’ll get there on their own terms.

Packers-Niners game could be coldest in NFL history.

Shockingly, they’re having trouble selling this one out.

The Cincinnati-San Diego game isn’t exactly going to be pleasant either: temps plunging from a high of 34 all game, and snow expected. If the Bengals can’t win their first playoff game since the George H.W. Bush administration when playing a team from San Diego in that weather, they should fold up the franchise.

If a playoff game looks to be too cold for Packers fans, then it’s likely to be nothing short of a nightmare. The idea of a Packers home game that didn’t sell out is hard to comprehend for this Bears fan. You can’t follow the Bears and not know how dedicated Green Bay fans are. The secret life of Bodfish’s Paul Morningstar

Someone was out to kill Paul Morningstar.

At least that’s what Paul Morningstar thought.

So he booby-trapped the inside and outside of his Bodfish home on North Salaine Drive with homemade bombs made from shotgun shells and mousetraps.

But instead of protecting him, it’s possible one of those devices caused his death.

Morningstar, believed to be in his 60s, was found in his home Saturday by county deputies, who, warned of numerous booby-traps, used robots to gain access.

He was last seen Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 18, on his bike, returning from his almost daily ride to the post office. There, the well-known maker of cycling tools would mail packages to clients around the world.

Considering what goes on during the week and days before the game, I suspect this will be the last Super Bowl in an open Northern stadium.

The logistics of coordinating all the activities and parties, while dealing with the weather, is going to cause some serious headaches and heartburn.

FWIW, New Orleans is one of the league’s favorite venues for Super Bowls, because it’s a party town and everything is so adjacent.

In contrast, when Super Bowls are held in Tampa, the activities have to be split between Tampa (gameday, Corporate and Players), and Orlando (Merchandising).

On gameday, everyone in Orlando gets on a bevy of busses, and with the Flordia Highway Patrol leading the way (with a couple of backup busses), rides to the stadium.
