I was in Jackson, WY last summer and saw a handbill on a pole that said something to the effect,

For such powerful offenses, the Eagles-Saints game has been remarkably low-scoring. With less than 2 minutes left in the first half, the Eagles finally score the game’s first touchdown.

Eagles lead 7-3.

They’ve spent years declaring that we should bring the gold standard back and do away with “fiat currency,” because if the Great Economic Collapse that they have feared for literally decades happens, then all that money will be worthless. Now they’re suddenly all for bitcoins, not because they’re tied to a fixed commodity whose value is as fluid as a puddle of piss, but because their ideology say it’s “good” since it’s not controlled by the banks.

You can’t make this shit up.

True confession: I’ve been playing around with Bitcoin and its clones, mostly for amusement. I haven’t risked much money in it, so if the Bitcoin market tanks, it won’t sting so much.

Reading the bulletin boards frequented by bitcoiners, I’m struck by their investing naivete, or in some cases, ignorance. They see an upward trend — buy, buy, buy! They see a downward trend — sell, sell, sell! [Add appropriate Jim Cramer sound effects.] Most are day traders, I suppose, trying to make money (or Bitcoins) by churning their portfolios.

It’s like playing the Stock Market Game with high school students, but in a day-trader scenario. An economics major or professor could write a pretty interesting study of the Bitcoin market as it is now, comparing it with those wild and crazy days of the 1920s-era stock market, just before the Crash.

As for me, I’m just trying to make a little money. So far, I’m a little ahead, as long as the value of Bitcoin against the dollar holds or keeps rising.

Buy low, sell high.

I find it interesting in a social experiment sort of fashion, almost like Wall Street in micro. I imagine there’s a very big crash on the horizon and, when it hits, a lot of those with bitcoins in their pockets are gonna be left wondering why they got involved with it in the first place.

There are some big players in the Bitcoin market, including the creator of the currnecy, who hold huge reserves. The rest of us are the minnows hoping for some leftover crumbs. As with IPOs, the early adopters are the ones who will make the most. Bitcoin started below $10, now it’s at $840 and trending back toward $1,000.

How Edward Snowden Turned Unwitting Journalists Into Activists

Excellent article. Greensnow & Co would call it “biased”, of course. It seems the internet has also enticed those who actually went to J school, thinking it’s where fame and money can be snatched up fairly quickly. They’re thrown into the milieu of those who seldom cracked anything but a bag of nuts, much less a story waiting to be found. The internet is fast, it’s easy for a seasoned writer, but—all too often, it’s not journalism. Sadly, in the eyes of the uneducated reader, it has also resulted in a definite lack of discernment and a plethora of false information.

I was a better journalist in the 9th grade than Greenwald will ever be, but I don’t claim to be one now.

I have opinions, and it’s why I frequent blogs to write comments, which usually have a POV, and why I used to write letters to the editor before the age of the internet. I never try to pretend it’s “journalism” because I know the difference between objectivity and advocacy and activism in the cause of an ideological position. I’ve also been an advocate and an activist and if I had saved them, could show you the mimeographed “newsletters” (for lack of a better word) of the positions I espoused during my time in the women’s movement. We were not shy about our POV but we never called it “journalism”. The only objective notes in them were the times and locations of meetings and events.

A short lesson in journalism:

135 Justanotherhuman  Sun, Jan 5, 2014 3:46:24am

BTW, ditching objectivity in journalism has been going on a long time as a campaign.

The End of Objectivity (Version 0.91)

dangillmor.typepad.com

A very subjective, opinionated article with no sourcing, of course, but also quoted here as fact (might want to correct that headline as well):

Five W’s and a H that should come *after* every story (A model for the 21st century newsroom: pt3)

onlinejournalismblog.com

“Again, while there is a fine tradition of feature articles in this vein, this is about opening it to readers. The web offers easy access to online petitions and automatically generated letters to your MP on the more traditional side; while consumer action and changing consumer behaviour is made easy by the ability to switch services online. No doubt there are other examples I’m not including (smart mobs spring to mind). And yes, it’s about advocacy, which may be uncomfortable for journalists used to the principle of objectivity. But I think we’re past that, aren’t we?” [A Brit writing about an American’s opinion of “objectivitiy” which suits his own meanderings about journalism.)

So, in all the enthusiasm to make everyone a “citizen-journalist” in the campaign to crush objectivity, will there be no pro journalists whatsoever? Will it cease to be a profession that requires no education, but a willy-nilly rush to permit amateurs to rule with gossip, innuendo, advocacy, and activism disguised as journalism? Will editors be a thing of the past, along with any last vestige of integrity whatsoever?

It’s a bit too warm for ice or snow today here in NC (it’s raining), unless the temp changes, but they’re calling for it tomorrow (w/a high of 36, then falling). Tuesday am it will be about 4 deg, with a high of 26, and “sunny” (not that it will help much).

So, we’ll probably have a rash of auto accidents Mon overnight and Tues am with icy roads. Easy prediction, BTW, because we’ve seen it over and over. The grocery stores will be sold out of milk and bread today…everyone panics (TV helps that along). And, of course, no one knows how to drive in it very well, or has the sense to stay off the roads, either.

Well, the earliest report I saw said they were hurling words like “bitch” at her. Regardless, I still think she lowered herself to their level—she sure didn’t act like the adult—you don’t expect young college kids to be. Her son must be embarrassed as hell. Mine would have been if I had been drunk in public like that, and her younger kids were probably scared. Where was their father when all this was going on?

Oh I agree about the fail all around. But having grown up with rednecks who (unlike the posers in Duck Dynasty) aren’t afraid to let their knuckles do the talking, I don’t read more into this than a simple fight in the stands. Followed later by some thoughtful prayer and forgiveness.

That could have happened in the first quarter and after half-time they’d be all ‘no hard feelings’ with each other .

I had not seen the video of Bama Mom until logging in this morning. All I can say is, I wonder what Mom is like daily? Someone (justanotherhuman?) asked where was her husband? I’m not sure, but he may have been trying to hide from being associated with her. I have an inkling she may be a bit outspoken and a little much all the time, and he knew it. He’s probably had some experience with her behavior.

Of course, there is no excuse for the dude she got in it with. He was probably a few beers in and also had his buddies around him and that is a classic example of a drunk punk with friends to protect him. Get him out by himself and he is probably a different guy.

It’s almost like an internet forum come to life! And of course, there had to be smartphone video. Ahhhh…the modern world.

Agreed…but he still has no control and where is he after she does the leap? Obviously she is not listening to him to calm down and he sure didn’t jump back in to pull he back after she did the leap. At that point he probably was just plain embarrassed. That is sort of what I was talking about. I just have a feeling he has been there before.

Was he asked about any of this? I doubt he wanted to talk about it. It probably was an interesting evening around the hotel or wherever they ended up after the game.

Just re-watched the video from your link. Worse than the idiot kid who kept baiting her are the other guys after she goes after him who start egging her on. Turns into a pack mentality thing. She took swings at two other men who just wanted to ‘get in’ on the action so they could brag about it later.

Okay, just saw a longer video. The husband does go back into the fray to drag her back out. It looks to me he wanted no part of the whole thing. He’s trying to drag her out and she goes after the other guys taunting her. She is out of control, and if that is not alcohol driven, then mom has some anger issues, which goes to what I’ve been thinking. I kinda feel sorry for her husband. As far as mom and the Okie kids…no excuse.

Oh I agree about the fail all around. But having grown up with rednecks who (unlike the posers in Duck Dynasty) aren’t afraid to let their knuckles do the talking, I don’t read more into this than a simple fight in the stands. Followed later by some thoughtful prayer and forgiveness..”

My mom tells a story of visiting my dad’s hometown of Amarillo when they were in college. They went to a bar to play pool and a fight broke out. The guys were hitting each other with pool balls and cues. My mom, from country club Chicago, was gobsmacked.

Very interesting discussions going on Meet The Press with the heads of the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo clinic regarding ACA, etc. They both seem to be okay with the ACA and agree that it will need tune-ups. They said is is good that it covers more people. In short, they aren’t as scared by the changes as some politicians. Also, Gregory asked them about pot. The Mayo guy reminded him pot has been used recreationally for over 5000 years and it wasn’t until 1970 when it was made a schedule one drug that stopped all research. He did say that cannabinoids have some good pain relief qualities that need to be looked at. Again…they didn’t tear their hair out and run around screaming America is going to pot.

I’m going to have to watch this again later on MSNBC. I wasn’t paying close enough attention.

Family of Pregnant Texan on Life Support: ‘We Know She’s Gone’

A paramedic herself, Munoz never wanted to be kept on life support, having seen the effects of brain death regularly as part of her job. According to Machado, Marlise and her husband had had many conversations about their end-of-life wishes. But those wishes have been overridden by a state law that says the 14-week-old fetus that was growing inside Munoz when she collapsed takes precedence over her advance directive.

This is weird and sick.

That’s what I thought; granted, the elevators in my building were installed in mid-2012, and I know a lot of the older apartment blocks around here are still using Soviet-era elevators which have never been upgraded.

My apartment block and the ones across the street are some of the few that have a central fire alarm system. A lot of those type of buildings have nothing.

Just for end of game sitches, not for any run of the mill field goals. I figure the other team will avoid looking at the display, but they can’t avoid the sound effects.

Dan Snyder - Boss of the Year

While the Redskins have never been shy to pay millions to football players, former employees who’ve also worked elsewhere in the NFL say salaries for the rest of the operation lag behind many teams. Ex-staffers reported cutbacks during the recent recession - multiple employees reported receiving bags of apples one year in lieu of holiday bonuses - but Tony Wyllie, the Redskins’ senior vice president of communications, noted that a lot of companies tightened their belts during the recession.

It should be noted that Forbes magazine lists Dan Snyder as having a net worth of $1.2 billion.

‘This is a fight that belongs to the Iraqis’: Kerry says US will not send troops to help Iraq fight al Qaeda

worldnews.nbcnews.com

“The United States will help Iraq fight an al Qaeda-linked group that seized the city of Fallujah in the west of the country — but will not send American troops to do so, Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday.

(snip)

The Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), which took control of Fallujah and Ramadi over last week, is one of the strongest rebel groups in Syria and has imposed a strict version of Islamic law in territories it holds.

(snip)

“ISIL militants remained strong in Falluja though, as tribesmen in the area have joined the uprising against the government.”

Here north of Nashville it’s still very mild, 55 degrees, but the rain is starting to come in, and the cold isn’t too many hours behind. It’s going to be down in the LOW single digits tonight and all of tomorrow.

I had a new battery in the car this summer, the cooling system was tested / flushed and filled in Oct, I’ve got the ‘jump start box fully charged, and will probably hook up the small little trickle charger to keep the battery warm tonight.

We are going to have it pretty darn easy compared to a lot of the country, I’m not too worried at all.

The weather forecast for America is strange if nothing else. Here in Ohio it is currently 39° with it called to go to 41° by 6 this evening…then a plunge down to 7° by 8 am Monday. Then it will drop further throughout Monday to -8° by 9 pm Monday night. 50° change in 24 hours. And it getting ready to rain which is going to turn into snow after sunset into the night. That means we have a nice chance for ice. I hate ice. I can take a bit of the cold, even if the winds tomorrow make it feel like -30°…but I hate ice. Ice and power outages are not fun, as many in Michigan just found out.

And then the forecast calls for mid-40s later this week. Freakin’ roller coaster!

And oh yeah…still thinking warm thoughts for the ‘hoopster. If anything, people in Wisconsin are nice and helpful, maybe someone will take him and his doggie in for a night or two if needed. That is, if he lives around any people that know he is there! Hang in there ‘hoops.

“Fifty Shades Of Grey”; bad Twilight BDSM fan fiction for the suburban soccer-mom.

FTFY

Fifty Shades started as Twilight fan fiction. The author just changed the names from Bella and Edward to Christian and Anna.

The City of Bones books started as Harry Potter fan fiction that had Draco Malfoy in leather pants. All the character names and world details were changed so Cassandra Clare wouldn’t get sued by JK Rowling and Warner Bros.
