Rand Paul: Snowden and Clapper Should Both Go to Prison

Off with their heads
Politics • Views: 22,352

Sen. Rand Paul, symbol of Republican rebranding, bravely stood up today and suggested throwing everybody in jail. Because that’s the libertarian way.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Sunday suggested that former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper should share a prison cell in the U.S.

“Maybe if they served in a prison cell together, we’d become further enlightened as a country over what we should and shouldn’t do,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Paul said that he does not believe Snowden deserves harsh punishment for his leaks, but believes that both Snowden and Clapper broke the law.

“So James Clapper did break a law and there is a prison sentence for that. So did Edward Snowden,” he said. “I don’t think Edward Snowden deserves the death penalty or life in prison. I think that’s inappropriate. And I think that’s why he fled, because that’s what he faced.”

Of course, I had to find out what our pal Glenn Greenwald had to say about this, because normally the mere suggestion that Edward Snowden should not get off scot free throws him into paroxysms of rage, but he was oddly silent for some reason.

Damn! I hate it when wingnuts and I are on the same page.

Well, where Snowden is concerned. I know he just wants Clapper in prison to prove Obama is incompetent and evil.

Today, I learned that It’s OK to flee to Russia if you face life in prison.

Thanks Rand!

He’s curled up in a corner, tears streaming down his face, whimpering over and over “How could you betray me, Rand?!”

He’s nougat-y mass of states’ rights fetishism with a thin shell of libertarian on top, just like his dad. Federalists and spies are both getting in the way of states social engineering themselves to freedom (from unions, gays, the Civil Rights Act, women with quaint notion about fair pay….)

Edit: also, he’s dumber than a fucking post.

8 lawhawk  Sun, Jan 5, 2014 5:34:26pm

Paul seems to miss the point of what happens when you flee; that’s added charges that will get you life in prison - the very thing Paul is claiming that Snowden was trying to avoid.

Considering how the GOP will latch on to anything that would seem to harm the President, one has to wonder why Snowden didn’t approach GOPers in Congress with this stuff?

You know, like the way Ellsberg did before going to the NYT to publish data.

It undermines his credibility (what little he had).

As for Clapper, the Guardian reported that the DNI couldn’t correct testimony due to the nature of the setting (unclassified while discussing classified programs:

Among such violations, the editorial said: “His leaks revealed that James Clapper Jr, the director of national intelligence, lied to Congress when testifying in March that the NSA was not collecting data on millions of Americans. (There has been no discussion of punishment for that lie.)”

In his letter to the newspaper, referring to one of the key Senate advocates of NSA reform, Litt continued: “Senator Ron Wyden asked about collection of information on Americans during a lengthy and wide-ranging hearing on an entirely different subject. While his staff provided the question the day before, Mr Clapper had not seen it. As a result, as Mr Clapper has explained, he was surprised by the question and focused his mind on the collection of the content of Americans’ communications. In that context, his answer was and is accurate.

“When we pointed out Mr Clapper’s mistake to him, he was surprised and distressed. I spoke with a staffer for Senator Wyden several days later and told him that although Mr Clapper recognized that his testimony was inaccurate, it could not be corrected publicly because the program involved was classified.”

Litt concluded: “This incident shows the difficulty of discussing classified information in an unclassified setting and the danger of inferring a person’s state of mind from extemporaneous answers given under pressure. Indeed, it would have been irrational for Mr. Clapper to lie at this hearing, since every member of the committee was already aware of the program.”

Snowden had to flee the country! He’s not safe here because DRONEZ!

He’s much safer in Russia with Putin.

That would’ve been the obvious route if he was a whistleblower. If he’s only out for himself, though?

I went back and watched that Clapper testimony that Greenwald’s always ranting about, and he has a small point - Clapper was amazingly clumsy in the way he handled that gotcha question. He should have simply pointed out that he was prohibited by law from discussing that issue in open session. But he got goaded into falling for the yes/no answer trap.

I get the sense that these NSA guys have had it too easy for too long. They’re not used to the cameras and the lights and the whargarbl.

That was the impression I got. He was trying to weigh what could be disclosed, looked bad. To put him into the same category with Snowden is simply ridiculous.

And yeah, after the last decade of unquestioned authority and expanding power, they probably weren’t used to their authority being questioned, and certainly not in public. But still, if they truly believe he committed a crime, then they need to stop dicking around and charge him with something. Perjury at the least, so that we can take this to court and get the whole story laid out.

The setting of an open hearing where they were trying to get Clapper to discuss classified programs didn’t help. Clapper screwed things up badly, but that’s in no way the same level as what Snowden did.

Greenwald wants to make the focus all on Clapper, when the problem is that Snowden’s the one who’s undermined US national security and decided for everyone what information about national security means and methods are disclosed - rights that he simply did not have. That goes beyond bad judgment. He purposefully engaged in espionage, but Greenwald wants to make this all about Clapper and the disclosure of information all in the hopes of shuttering NSA programs.

Meanwhile as the ever growing program on the Right to portray the Nazis as leftists and homosexuals to people too stupid to know any better continues to gather steam…

Hitler entered office with great promises to the people; offering “change they could count on” for things that really didn’t need “changed”.

Today there are striking similarities between modern America and nazi Germany. Are you aware that one of the first things hitler did in his rise to complete control over Germany was to subdue the Christian Church? It was. Before the rise of hitler the Christian Church in Germany was strong. And there were some dear, beloved, courageous saints who did stand up against hitler and his faction; but it was too few too late.

Here are some examples of the “change” that hitler and his government implemented early on to pave the way for the dismantling of Germany, the murder and maiming of millions of innocent people and the dismemberment of the German Christian Church. By the way, most of the churches didn’t disappear; they simply changed their ideology from Christian to state sponsorship. Pastors were told to either comply with statism, step down or be penalized which could and did include hanging.

Just like in America, in Germany these changes were made incrementally. Note how history is indeed repeating itself.

-While prayer in school had been obligatory the people allowed hitler to make it optional. Prayer was removed from America’s public schools in 1962.

-Festivals that had previously been identified as Christian holidays were reclassified with secular names. This has been accomplished all over America.

-They took very aggressive steps to control and intimidate “Pastors” to incorporate and encourage various seemingly harmless pagan worship while discouraging churches from preaching the true Gospel message. Most American churches have already voluntarily surrendered many of their rights by unnecessarily embracing 501 C3 registration and some “churches” in America today incorporate “Christian” yoga, “chrislam” and other pagan religious activities into their programs.

-They took control of public radio not allowing views contrary to theirs to be broad-casted. In America there is movement to restrict Biblical views as “hate speech” as they now do in Canada and some have tried to do in America.

-They supported and promoted Darwinian Evolution to justify the purging of the species. In many schools and universities in America Creation is not even allowed to be introduced as an option.

-In some cases the Christian cross symbol was outlawed and replaced with the German swastika (the swastika didn’t originate with hitler; it had previously been used as a religious symbol for thousands of years). Today many of the largest main stream churches that call themselves “Christian” are practicing and promoting the removal of the cross symbol so as not to offend anyone.
Sigh…

I’ll take Christian Fundamentalist based revisionist history for $600.00 Alex…

What is…”completely made up and fraudulent bullshit that is utterly incorrect?”

*ding, ding, ding, that is correct, we have a winner!*

The “Muslim attack” image at the linked site is notable for its obvious fakery too. When “Muslim extremests” carve a star of David into your back they do not hesitate and then (try to) go over the same lines lightly three or more times.

This is what the police or any experienced E.R. worker would instantly call a self or accomplice inflicted wound after seeing it (look at the multiple parallel light scratches). All just scratches really, they didn’t turn out deep enough to show well on the first razor blade pass, so they tried a little harder on the second and then the third pass with the blade in spots. Even in the low res. image you can see that for yourself… :(

Cold weather and climate change.
I noticed that Lubbock will probably have its first single digit reading since 2006, with a forecast low of 9F tonight. It used to get below zero there at least a few days every winter, with an all time low of -17 on January 17, 1963. It hasn’t been below zero in Lubbock since 1987.
Here in the boonies of Palo Pinto County, it is a toasty 25 right now. It has reportedly been below zero here, too, but not in a very long time.

Legally, I think GG knows he’s in trouble by aiding and abetting the publication of those documents Snowden has been charged with stealing.

Everything he is doing is an attempt to obfuscate his role in the entire scheme.

I would not be outdoors in that mess. It’s 41 deg here in NC, but falling to around 5 or less tonight. We’re supposed to get a wintery mix today of some sort, probably not until the sun goes down when the roads will freeze over. No one knows how to drive in it here, we get it so seldom. I expect the county will put a salt mix down, but only on the major roads, and getting out of neighborhoods is going to be the trick tomorrow morning.

We love cheese so much we pour it on our streets.

Milwaukee’s latest antidote to icy streets: Cheese brine

Would you like a little cheese brine to go with your rock salt on the city’s roadways this winter?

The city’s Department of Public Works will go ahead this winter with a pilot program to determine whether cheese brine — a liquid waste product left over from cheesemaking — can be added to rock salt and applied directly to the street.

There is one downside: The city says cheese brine has a distinctive odor.

The commenters must always have to buy sex and/or can’t have normal sexual relationships with like-minded adults. I don’t think they actually care about the difference between prostitution and sex trafficking. It’s sad that sex to some is a commercial transaction, nothing more. Worse, that people are forced into selling their bodies under threat and those who buy them don’t care.

It seems to me that getting a woman who actually wants to be with you would be much better than having to pay a woman who would rather not.

A lot of men pigeon-hole women. I think that a lot of men (and even some women) still see women in a “madonna/whore” frame. Psychosexuality is something I’ve always been interested in—not that I’m a Freudian because I don’t think there are “fixed” stages of sexual development, and I think that the way society views women’s sexuality, as well as the overall maturity level of the population, is a far better predictor of sexual behavior, no matter whether one is straight, gay, bisexual, etc.

I am also not interested in a woman who has no interest in me beyond a financial transaction, but I do not see why it should not be allowed.

Sex trafficking is made worse by the current legal situation, which puts it into a milieu that is outside the law and makes it difficult for te victims to report abuse.

This is for New York and NY’ers are generally pretty decent tippers.

Furniture Delivery Men

You made the trek to Ikea in the water taxi, but you’re sure as hell not dragging your Kivik couch all the way back to your apartment. So you get it delivered.

If you’re getting one piece of furniture delivered, it comes in a box, and is relatively easy to get into your apartment, $5 tip is fine.

If you’re getting one piece of furniture delivered, but it’s an extremely heavy and big item, which they have to somehow hoist up a tiny and narrow staircase, then you should tip $10-15 (depending on how hard they’re sweating?)

If you’re getting an entire living room set delivered, and you feel they’re burning thousands of calories to help you out, tip a generous, but no doubt appreciated $20.

I have no problem with calling Snowden a thief. I also have no problem with calling Greenwald and Poitras receivers and disseminators of stolen goods, a criminal offense also, as well as connected to the actual crime. I think they’re up to their eyeballs in these criminal acts. Snowden may have committed the actual thefts of the documents (also at Dell in 2012), but in the case of the 2013 theft, Greenwald and Poitras were very involved, IMHO, even if Snowden did the physical act.

Tipping Question:

Having a kids twin bed, mattress and activity desk delivered from Crate and Barrel. Delivery fee and handling already paid. What is a good amount to tip the delivery guys assuming they a delivering into the house? (If they leave it curbside, then obviously nothing).

What would you tip if they bring it into house on 1st floor? How about if they bring it to the third floor bedroom?

I have an amount it mind, but want to see what other people would do.

Thanks!

First floor, nothing. That is their job. 3rd floor, $20.00 unless it’s really heavy. If so, I would go $35.00.

Triple star system ‘can reveal secrets of gravity’

bbc.co.uk

“Astronomers have discovered a unique triple star system which could reveal the true nature of gravity.

“They found a pulsar with two white dwarfs all packed in a space smaller than Earth’s orbit of the Sun.

“The trio’s unusually close orbits allow precise measurements of gravity and could resolve difficulties with Einstein’s theories.”

I’ve thought about it, but so far my car’s been pretty good about the whole thing. Not to mention that I can’t use it in the one place I really need it the most - the parking garage where I work.

When I was in Alaska, I had an oil pan, Transmission pan, engine block and battery heater. Every parking space where ever you went had rows of outlets to plug into. You let the car get cold-soaked at -20, you weren’t getting it started again until it had warmed up.

Here in TN it got down to 4* last night, car started right up. I like to think that the little trickle charger I threw on the battery before I went to bed kept it nice an warm.

Court stops Utah gay marriages

“The Supreme Court on Monday morning put on hold a federal judge’s decision striking down Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage, thus stopping a wave of such marriages across the state. The Court’s order reinstates the state ban and will keep it intact until after a federal appeals court has ruled on it.

“The order appeared to have the support of the full Court, since there were no noted dissents. The ruling can be interpreted as an indication that the Court wants to have further exploration in lower courts of the basic constitutional question of state power to limit marriage to a man and a woman. Had it refused the state’s request for delay, that would have at least left the impression that the Court was comfortable allowing same-sex marriages to go forward in the 33 states where they are still banned.”

You can pass all the gun safety laws you want, you can’t legislate common friggin sense

Jerome M. Hauer, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s director of homeland security, took out his handgun and used the laser sighting device attached to the barrel as a pointer in a presentation to a foreign delegation, according to public officials. It happened Oct. 24 in Albany at the highly secure state emergency operations center below State Police headquarters.

These officials, one of whom claimed to be an eyewitness, said that three Swedish emergency managers in the delegation were rattled when the gun’s laser tracked across one of their heads before Hauer found the map of New York, at which he wanted to point.

Even selling at double the price, Colorado dispensaries are running low on product

In less than a week, Colorado dispensaries and pot shops report that they’re selling so much recreational marijuana, there could be a shortage basically any moment. After all, it’s not like they can just grab the plants your cousin was growing in the closet and sell them off. In the face of this supply problem, even charging twice the price for the recreational stuff over the medical version isn’t stemming the tide of eager buyers.

For example, at one pot store the San Francisco Chronicle looked at, customers were shelling out $45 for an eighth of an ounce of recreational pot, compared to the $25 charge for the same amount the shop sells for medical purposes.

“They’re not used to coming into a facility and paying $25 an eighth, so when they come in, it’s just whatever the price is,” the store’s president and chief executive said. “Having the ability to buy safe, reliable, quality marijuana in an environment that’s fun and exciting sure beats going in a back alley and saying, ‘Hey buddy, you got a bag?’”

Around the state, recreational pot sells for about $400 an ounce, twice the $200 an ounce price tag retailers collect for medical marijuana, according to the executive director of the National Cannabis Industry Association, a Washington-based trade group.

From the comments section of this terribly misleading article over at Time. I don’t know enough to know if what the commenter says is 100% correct, but it seems sensible based on what I do know.:

DeweySayenoff 1 day ago

@ZanyRobertsYou could have googled this, but since you ask, and since I know the answer, yes, the heart beats on its own. In fact, it usually does, since that’s not a function controlled by the brain.

For example, people with broken necks who die don’t die because the heart stopped. They died because they stopped breathing - a function reliant on certain parts of the brain stem. Unlike the lungs, the heart has its own electrical system, and a lot more tolerance to hypoxic (lack of oxygen) conditions than the brain does. So the brain can be completely dead (no activity at all, even in the brain stem), the lungs WILL stop working on their own (which is the case for this girl since she’s dependent on the ventilator) but the heart can continue to beat until the rest of the organs fail (and they will because many of them rely on some function in the brain through the endocrine system).

For this girl, it’s a matter of months before the breakdown of her organs proves too much for her heart to continue to work and it will stop. The sad part is that at that point, NONE of her organs could be donated to help save a life. They will deteriorate beyond the point of viability. Unless they act soon, the family will eliminate their opportunity to give this girls unexpected death some meaning, if not to them, then to others they don’t know.

The only thing that confused me was: If the brain stops, causing the lungs to stop, wouldn’t that deprive the heart of oxygen and cause it to stop?

Anyway, I can’t stay—too much work to do. Mondays, yuck.

The Supreme Court doesn’t want to get ahead of itself procedurally, and they probably know that if they had allowed the state to continue issuing SSM licenses, it would be a signal that the rest of the states prohibiting them that the gig will soon be up for them.

They’ll let the issue come through the appellate process, even though it means that they’re sanctioning discriminatory actions until the Court hears it at a later date.

Fact is that the 10th Circuit has a split in authority of sorts. New Mexico has legalized SSM, though that’s largely on state constitution and state statutory grounds. UT’s ruling granting the stay of the state constitutional prohibition followed the NM reasoning, but the remaining states within the circuit maintained their postures on prohibition.

This case will eventually end up back at the Court. They wont be able to duck it for much longer.

There are tests to determine whether a patient is categorized as brain dead. Being incapable of breathing on their own without a ventilator is one such test. There are other tests of various reflexes indicating that the brain stem is not functioning, including the use of EEGs.

This just means that the Supreme Court will eventually take up the issue of SSM in all states. It was inevitable after the strike down of DOMA. It sucks for the gays and lesbians of Utah (and every other state that hasn’t granted recognition to SSM yet) that they have to wait, but I’m relatively confident that Anthony Kennedy is on the right side of this issue, and we’ll have SSM in all 50 states soon enough.

I’ve been trying to follow this case. IIRC, she is brain dead. The fetus is very early in it’s development. The family and the patient both stated this is against her wishes.

Yes, it is a violation of her rights —as she stated her wishes.

From what I know, the women’s body is more than an incubator. The brain regulates much of the interaction between the fetus and it’s mother. A dead brain cannot do this.

The fetus needs more than oxygen and nutrition. There are chemical/hormonal mechanisms that the brain regulates to insure proper development.

I know at 24 weeks a baby can survive in a neonatal ward, with minimal after issues. But that is with a live mother until that point.

I hate to think this case is being used as an experimet —legal or medical.

I hate that the people involved in the decision (men and women) are reducing the “mother” to nothing more than in incubator.

I hope with all my heart this fetus is not damaged.

We have rain washing the snow away at present. The temperature went up to 54, so at least it’s not turning into ice. Yet… It’s supposed to drop back down into the single digits again tonight.

Sounds like you have what central Ohio had yesterday. Today it is 1° currently headed for -5° to -8° tonight. And, they claim we will be back up to 50° this weekend again. I can not believe these wild swings.

But the wind just kills me…having an 100-year old house with the front facing West…the winds when they are strong in below zero temps just are a bit much to fight. I have a new furnace (93 percent efficient0 and it does a nice job, but there is still a chill. Brick walls, with the inner insulating brick and the plaster right on the bricks just transfers the cold. So, I heat to a level that allows the furnace to cycle and I use space heaters in the rooms I am occupying during the cold spell.

He wants that but the law in Texas is clear, and it’s unlikely to be overturned in time to affect the matter.

That’s because this state is filled with a bunch of raving far right GOP lunatics who’d rather force a family to keep a woman alive against her own stated wishes than ever concede that a woman is more than an incubator once she gets pregnant.

re: #245 Pie-onist Overlord

Good Morning, Alouette! I just found this next story but I wanted to put it up while you’re here:

Holocaust Survivor Meets Her Liberator Nearly 70 Years Later: Marsha Kreuzman Honors Joe Barbella

It’s been almost 70 years, but Marsha Kreuzman still remembers the moment she lay outside the steps of a Nazi crematorium wishing she could die.

Kreuzman had already lost her mother, father and brother to the Holocaust, and death seemed inevitable, she said.

But then an American soldier picked up her 68-pound body and whisked her to safety.

“I wanted to kiss his hand and thank him,” she said. “From the first day I was liberated, I wanted to thank them, but I didn’t know who to thank.”

Since then, the now-90-year-old Holocaust survivor has been on a decades-long quest to find American soldiers who liberated the Mauthausen concentration camp, one that didn’t have any success until she met Joe Barbella, two months ago, quite by chance.

Their unlikely meeting — and now a budding friendship — has given Kreuzman a pleasant twist to an otherwise-tragic story.

Read the whole thing, it’s worth it. Also see the Wikipedia write-up for Barbella’s unit, the 11th Armored Division (The Thunderbolt Division). They were late to war, but they made an epic forced march through France to join Patton’s 3rd Army and played a major roll in erasing the Bulge.

Not the same thing: Those politicians should not be fighting same-sex marriage, it is their duty to accept their error and cease making it. By contrast, Admiral Kurita should have ordered the Yamato forward and fired on the landing area. His duty was to stop the invasion of Leyte, and he was derelict in that duty by placing the survival of himself and his ship above accomplishing his mission.

Well, NYC is currently in the midst of a heat wave that will last for a few more hours (temps in the 50s) before plummeting into single digits (below zero with wind chills).

If it were any more severe a temperature drop, it could double for the Day After Tomorrow insta-freeze scene of NYC.

With all the rain and snow that still puddled and stacked up around the area, I wouldn’t be surprised that alot of the region turns into a skating rink tonight. I only hope that things have a chance to dry out fast enough that the cold doesn’t set in freezing everything.

re: #219 lawhawk

At the end of the day, any objection to gay marriage is discrimination based on religion. Period.

We’re a secular nation. People need to get this through their fucking skulls.

In my case I started small with healthy foods. Fruit, yogurt, a piece of toast.

When ending a fast of a certain length, you’re putting a bunch of stuff into your stomach it hasn’t had in awhile. If you are too gung ho about it you can cause yourself some serious indigestion or worse.

I asked once before, but I’m going to ask again: Have same sex marriage opponents, in the past several years, successfully argued their position in court? That is, have they managed to come with a legally sound reason that same sex marriage should be prohibited?

In my case I started small with healthy foods. Fruit, yogurt, a piece of toast.

When ending a fast of a certain length, you’re putting a bunch of stuff into your stomach it hasn’t had in awhile. If you are too gung ho about it you can cause yourself some serious indigestion or worse.

Pizza has tomato sauce, grease, processed crap, etc. in it.

In that case, I’ll send the little prick a triple Whopper with extra bacon and a bucket of cheese fries.

Conservatives keep saying they hate “Big Government”, but they keep relying on it to enforce their moral standards on the rest of society.

If you don’t believe in same sex marriage, don’t marry someone the same sex as you.

If you don’t believe in abortion, don’t have one.

If you don’t believe in using birth control, then don’t use it.

Simple enough, and no “Big Government” required.

Nope. The best they can do is argue that marriage is for procreation, and thus should be banned for those who don’t procreate. Which of course would invalidate many heterosexual marriages, and the courts ain’t going there.

They don’t even bother with “THE BIBLE SAYS SO !!!!1” arguments, since those don’t have a chance in the courts. That’s just for getting the base into a frothing rage.

AP article: The article makes it clear that parents will need to contact their insurance company to add the baby to their policy. The Healthcare.gov website is not able to accept such changes yet, supposedly due to all the updates that had to be made over the past three months so the cite could accept applications. The update to the website is needed to recalculate subsidies and premiums, but does not affect coverage of the baby.

Holyfield sparks anger with ‘homophobic’ comments on Celebrity Big Brother

Evander Holyfield sparked a Twitter storm on Sunday night when he classed homosexuality as a disability and claimed it could be ‘fixed’.

The former four-time world heavyweight champion made the comments during his stay in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

He was later warned for his outburst, to which he replied he was merely stating his opinion.

Holyfield was being quizzed by The Apprentice runner-up Luisa Zissman about whether any boxers had come out as gay.

How global warming can make cold snaps even worse

In fact, despite the trolling of Donald Trump and other climate change deniers, global warming is probably contributing to the record cold, as counter-intuitive as that may seem. The key factor is a feedback mechanism of climate change known as Arctic amplification. Here’s how to explain the nuts and bolts of it to your under-informed family and friends:

Snow and ice are disappearing from the Arctic region at unprecedented rates, leaving behind relatively warmer open water, which is much less reflective to incoming sunlight than ice. That, among other factors, is causing the northern polar region of our planet to warm at a faster rate than the rest of the northern hemisphere. (And, just to state the obvious, global warming describes a global trend toward warmer temperatures, which doesn’t preclude occasional cold-weather extremes.)

Since the difference in temperature between the Arctic and the mid-latitudes helps drive the jet stream (which, in turn, drives most US weather patterns), if that temperature difference decreases, it stands to reason that the jet stream’s winds will slow down. Why does this matter?

Well, atmospheric theory predicts that a slower jet stream will produce wavier and more sluggish weather patterns, in turn leading to more frequent extreme weather. And, turns out, that’s exactly what we’ve been seeing in recent years. Superstorm Sandy’s uncharacteristic left hook into the New Jersey coast in 2012 was one such example of an extremely anomalous jet stream blocking pattern.

When these exceptionally wavy jet stream patterns occur mid-winter, it’s a recipe for cold air to get sucked southwards. This week, that’s happening in spectacular fashion.

How well reputed is the Volokh Conspiracy site?

I’m not sure how reputable it is nowadays, but maybe this will help:

The Volokh Conspiracy is a blog, founded in 2002, which covers mostly (but not exclusively) United States legal and political issues, generally from a libertarian or conservative perspective.[citation needed] In 2008, it was one of the most widely read legal blogs in the United States. The Volokh Conspiracy then had more than one million page views each month. In 2007 Inside Higher Ed wrote that it “probably has more influence in the field — and more direct impact — than most law reviews.”

By 2013, it had become lower ranked than several other legal blogs, including Above the Law, SCOTUSblog and legal academic blog PrawfsBlawg, in quality and popularity rankings by Avvo, Business Insider and the American Bar Association Journal.

It remains the most-visited academic blog published by law professors and gets an average of approximately 25,000 unique visitors on weekdays.

The Volokh Conspiracy has been cited by the traditional media such as the New York Times[citation needed] and was credited as having influenced an ultimately unsuccessful constitutional challenge to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Unfortunately I think that “awakening” is going to include a bunch of collateral damage (physical and economic) as well as a bunch of innocents getting injured or killed.

Hell, even in 1970s Chile, it took a lot of searching on the part of Nixon/Kissinger to find any army officers nuts enough to try to overthrow Allende. And they still needed to murder the chief of the Chilean military, Rene Schneider, who took his oath to uphold the Constitution very seriously.

That’s a common fantasy among certain sectors of the gun culture. The presumption is that the “shall not be infringed” over rides governments ability to ban or regulate concealed carry. I find it entertaining to remind them that the first laws banning concealed carry went on the books (in the south - LA & KY) in 1813 while many of the founding fathers & certainly members of the constitutional convention were still alive and politically active . Yet I can find nothing from any of them considering those laws to be unconstitutional.

We have a new Mayor in Boston. Good luck to Mayor Martin J Walsh!

Great part of his address:

The people of Boston aren’t shy about saying what they think - about everything from politics to the Patriots.

But I know you’re just as ready to back up the talk with action. I have seen it every day I’ve lived in this city. And that is every day of my life.

It is the fabric of this city, woven throughout our history.

Boston earned its reputation. This is the city that started the revolution that gave us a nation.

We fought tyranny.

We stood up to slavery.

We opened our doors to immigrants.

And when our gay and lesbian neighbors reminded us of the rights they were being denied, we backed their fight, and helped our Commonwealth become the first to protect those rights in law.

Boston has been called, a “City upon a Hill.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone use that phrase to make a lofty point.

But let me tell you what I think about when I hear it, with apologies to John Winthrop, the Puritan settler who said it first.

We are a City Upon a Hill, but it’s not just the shining light of Beacon Hill.

It’s Savin Hill, where I live. It’s Bunker Hill, Bellevue Hill and Fort Hill. It’s Pope’s Hill, Jones Hill, and Telegraph Hill. It’s Copp’s Hill, Mission Hill and Eagle Hill.

So when I say we are sworn in together, it means we’re in this together.

We are in this together – every neighborhood.

We are in this together – every race and religion.

We are in this together, every man, woman and child. For our seniors and our students, for rich and poor, and everyone in between.

We will expand opportunity so it reaches every person in every corner of our city. We cannot tolerate a city divided by privilege and poverty.

We will protect and grow our sense of community. For it is Boston’s greatest source of strength.

And we will ensure equality for all: No matter your age, race, religion, sexual orientation. No matter what.

Together, we can create ONE Boston … one Boston, a hub of opportunity, community, and equality for all.

The work starts now.

Rest of the transcript here.

The most amusing thing about the RWNJ and their “military coup” scenario is their belief that the military will join them en masse.

It goes hand in hand with their presumption that no democrats or leftists own guns and that all gun owners will immediately join their treason as well. It was common in the south in 1860 to discount the martial abilities of the north as well; they might wish to remember how well that turned out for them.

A little off the topics…but what is with the griping about Fallujah falling back into the hands of Al Qaeda? This is Iraq isn’t it? Things like this have only been going on for a few hundreds of years.

Did people expect that once the US pulled out it would stay a perfect representation of US styled Democracy?

And I understand about the loss of all our good soldiers trying to take and keep it. And sure it is sad, but let’s stick with reality. It is the freakin’ Middle East.

Just another example of trying to fix the area with force. The only people that are gonna fix it are the residents of the area. And again, for hundreds of years they haven’t been able.

What is that definition of insanity again?

They think the South lost to numbers, though some of them will give Winfield Scott Hancock credit for his leadership at Gettysburg, while ignoring George Meade’s conduct of the battle and lambasting James Longstreet while exonerating Robert E. Lee.

It’s far more complex than that. Things are still stable in Ramadi, mostly because the local leaders made a durable deal with the PM. Nuri al-Maliki however, has in the main not been supportive of local government for Fallujah, which he seems to see as a nest of vipers. given the number of ex-insurgents from Fallujah who have gone back into Islamist insurgency in Syria, he has a point.

PM al-Maliki may also be under pressure from Iran to prevent Iraqi Sunnis from joining Syrian rebel groups.

Dark, even the most complex issues have some simplicity to them. There are areas on this earth that cannot get along. The Middle East is one such area. And sadly, religion has a lot to do with it. Florida man uses AK-47 to defend himself against three armed assailants (VIDEO)

One of three suspects was fatally shot Thursday night just before 8 p.m. by a resident armed with an AK-47 after an apparent attempted robbery in Davie, Florida, just outside of Fort Lauderdale, went awry.

The details of the incident that have been made public are still a bit sketchy, but according to a report by NBC Miami, three armed suspects entered the man’s apartment with the intentions to rob him and caused severe injuries when they pistol whipped him.

However, at some point during the altercation, the man was able to retrieve his AK-47 and fought back against his assailants.

The man fired at the suspects as they were fleeing, striking one in the leg several times and fatally wounding him. Capt. Dale Engle of the Davie Police Department confirmed that, “Two people were shot, one seriously injured,” although it is not known at this time who was the second gunshot victim, whether it was the resident or a second suspect.

AKs can be properly used for self-defense.

Even cheap frozen pizzas can be pretty darn good when “doctored” with added fresh stuff like a bunch of smashed garlic, chopped green peppers, and whatever else is laying around. I used to get dollar frozen pizzas to make what I called Pauper Pizzas that were quite delicious with added stuff.

Thinking that if you hand them a Bible and quote Scripture at them they will suddenly transform into willing pawns of the US economic engine.

RBS

That was CL over in Jersey who did that. I’ll just put an afghan on the bottom part of the bed and consider turning the heat on in the apartment. The heat is usually off since enough heat comes from the surrounding apartments to keep the center area in the 68-70F range and the rest of the apartment in the low to mid 60s. Which is a comfortable sleeping temp to me.

In my old place in western PA the bedroom had really poor heating/cooling compared to the rest of the house. So I used a down comforter. I knew it was *cold* when the cats switched from sleeping in front of the heat vents or in their cat bed to sleeping on the comforter next to me. :)

Like that. Have 2 jars of Alfredo sauce I need to use. But I can make my own crust. Bet it would be good with broccoli, also.

My favorite crust, been making it since I was a teen:

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup oil (i like olive)
2/3 cup milk.

mix till all is wet, then kneed 10 times. Roll out to desired thickness. Top. Bake at 425 for 20 - 22 minutes. Nom nom nom.

The museum has spent its entire existence collecting (and some would argue pilfering) cultural and artistic treasures from around the world, including from the Islamic world.

It’s just that the Met organized the Islamic Art into its own department in 1963.

Sorry, I didn’t even pay attention to the title. I was more interested in the designs…

I always make a big pot of chili when I know it is going to be real cold. Put some together yesterday. Had some for lunch. Always better the second day. I still use some ground beef, but it gets tons of beans (black and pinto) lots of peppers, both green and pablano peppers, tons of onions and lots of dried spices like cumin, chili, onion, garlic, red pepper. I can’t give up the beef, but it has fallen down the list as far as the dominant ingredient. And, very little tomato sauce…only one can…the rest is all beef broth and one can of vegetable broth.

Had some at lunch with a baguette grabbed from a local place.

Not my ideal spicing/ingredient combo though. Since I’m making it for a group of which some do not do “spicy” I played down the amount of chile powder and red pepper, and skipped the extra chopped up hot peppers I normally add. Just have a bottle of hot sauce available in case someone wants to make it hotter and also sour cream if someone thinks it is too hot. Did extra meat and skipped the green peppers as well - my usual mix is lighter on meat (or outright veggie sometimes with a grain filler.) Yes, yes, I know, sacrilege. I also put in beans. :p

Afghanistan girl wearing suicide vest detained

bbc.co.uk

“She was held on Sunday night in Helmand province, as she tried to carry out an attack on border police, an interior ministry spokesman told the BBC.

“The girl, reported to be as young as eight and thought to be the sister of a prominent Taliban commander, is said to be in a state of shock and confusion.

“Police told the BBC she was encouraged to carry out the attack by her brother.”

Tell me these people aren’t fucking fanatics, that they would sacrifice a small child to their dirty destruction.

I wish I could say this surprises me as much as it sickens me, but unfortunately it doesn’t as there are thousands upon thousands of child “soldiers” involved in conflicts all around the world.

Child soldiers are cheap and efficient weapons in asymmetric warfare. Accounts from the field tell of soldiers who are near free to recruit, cheap to feed, and quick to follow orders. They aptly learn how to employ brutal tactics. The Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a rebel group operating in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, for example, was notorious for raping and mutilating the civilian population. It was often coerced children, and often high or drunk ones, who perpetrated the acts. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, fighting for independence from Sri Lanka, relied on children for their suicide bombing missions during their decades-long campaign. At times, they found that children could much more easily penetrate targets than their adult counterparts.

Trained and educated in the ways of guerrilla war, many child combatants grow up in a world where brutality is the norm. The result is a violent gift that keeps on giving — today’s Taliban leaders reputedly cut their teeth in the field as child soldiers fighting the Soviets. In addition to inducing psychological trauma, a violent childhood reduces healthy educational opportunities, leaving militancy the only viable career path in later years. War becomes a way of life.

- See more at: foreignpolicy.com

From October of this year:

The White House on Monday afternoon announced that it had issued blanket waivers to three countries, allowing them to receive military aid despite their ongoing use of child soldiers despite a 2008 law to the contrary. […]

A national security interest waiver was built into the law, however, giving the President the authority to override the law should he deem it necessary to do so. That’s precisely what the Obama administration did on Monday, issuing blanket waivers to three countries known to use child soldiers: Yemen, Chad, and South Sudan. Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo received partial waivers as well; this means that they’ll be granted lethal aid only in support of the peacekeeping missions currently ongoing in the country.
