It’s why I’ve tuned out from Old Media, as it’s ceased being about the facts and is now dedicated to the “controversy.” They keep invoking Solyndra as if it’s some proof that solar can’t succeed in America, ignoring that Solyndra failed largely because the global market is already saturated by Chinese companies which have major backing from their government. China’s setting itself up as the world’s source of clean energy, while our government remains a bunch of Koch suckers who remain convinced that fossil fuels will be as relevant in 100 years as they are today.

Though I think it’s bit different from a short bit in the nightly news which is a minute or two tops without probably that much background investigation. As compared to a “news magazine” that can be topical, but often has had months to do their interviews, investigation, etc. for a 10-15 minute segment where they do have some time to cover or explain things in some depth.

That was one thing that was a HUGE shock to me, coming from the Military to the Civilian world. Military I started my first year with 30 days paid leave. Plus we usually had a 3 day (or 2 1/2 day) weekend every month without fail. Got to my new job, and got a whopping 5 days vacation time year 1.

Boshe is located inside the city of Lufeng, long considered by authorities as a hotbed for the production and trade of drugs. In the last three years, one-third of China’s crystal meth came from the city, according to the security bureau’s statement.

Channel 10 asked Greenwald about the increasingly popular argument in Israel that given Snowden’s revelations about the scope of U.S. spying on its allies, Washington had no grounds for its continued refusal to free Pollard, who is serving a life sentence for spying on the United States on Israel’s behalf. Inter alia, the documents revealed that the U.S. National Security Agency had monitored the email address of the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office in 2009.
Greenwald agreed that the Snowden revelations are relevant to Pollard’s case. “When the U.S. government goes around the world criticizing other countries for spying on allies and prosecuting them,” he said, “are they going to maintain that with a straight face when they’re doing exactly that?”

The U.S. government, Greenwald charged, does exactly what it accuses its enemies of doing, and no country has the right to say other countries shouldn’t do something while it is secretly violating that very same taboo.

It’s releases like this that make it harder and harder to say that anything good came from Snowden. If it had stopped within our borders, focused strictly on accusations of NSA domestic spying, dudebros might have been able to make a convincing case that he was really a whistleblower focused on addressing the excesses of post-9/11 politics. But it didn’t stop there, it became a vendetta against the NSA, and that has made it easier to argue that the man was working to hurt somebody, whether it was his former employers or the US at large, rather than any dedication to rights or freedoms.

One of the event’s organizers, Cherilyn Eager, concurred, telling Fox 13 that “[w]e need people to stand up and speak out. We need to get noisy. We need some outrage. It is about the sheriffs now coming out to protect the people.”

I’ve quizzed a dudebro on occasion about what the endgame for this whole “popular uprising” business is. After all, in their minds, they rise up against the “tyrannical” government and imprison many of those holding office for their “unconstitutional” actions. But what then? Call elections to elect a new government? That just puts them at risk of the same sort of people they disapprove of being elected. Install a military government or appoint one? No provision for that in the Constitution, so they’d be in violation of it.
The response I usually got? That they hadn’t thought that far, but were sure when the time came, those who’d overthrown the popularly elected government would make sure that the Constitution was followed.

They have as legal advisor one Judge Navin-Chandra Naidu, who has worked with many organizations from the Sultanate of Sulu to a Chinese county, and is a member of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists. Sounds like an interesting guy. His website, “Ecclesiastical Court of Justice and Law Offices,”[3], has the usual stuff about the country being essentially Christian in nature, and offers advice on how churches can avoid paying tax. In 2001, he was a wanted man, accused in Fiji of forging his law degree,[4] and his dealings with the Pembina Nation in North Dakota have managed to irk the Anti-Defamation League. Of course, this is all the result of a conspiracy against him.

At the end of 18 months you will sit for a major examination. When you pass this written examination, you will receive your Law degree and a special Bar License to practice in all secular courts.
The School will approach bar associations, to accredit you as a lawyer licensed to practice in federal courts through the pro hac vice rule or through MJP (multi-jurisdictional practice) procedures in conformity with the adoption of the The Role of Lawyers at the 8th United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, Havana, Cuba, 27th August to 7th September, 1990. You must understand that we need to instruct other sovereigns that we are equals, and not inferior to them.

Let’s put it this way — the long-ass UN document he refers to in his syllabus is from a series of Congresses the UN has every five years to discuss criminal issues and law . It’s interesting he points to one from 1990 when there have been a bunch more since then.

The scary part is that I really believe that in his own mind he doesn’t see any problem or conflict. Since he (and the rest of that camp) tend to refer to anything that isn’t mainstream or fundamental Christian as a “False” religion, there is no issue. The constitution protects “Religions”, and since those are “FALSE” they aren’t protected.
I’m not being facetious on this one, I really truly believe that is how their minds work.

Basically. In their minds, there’s no need for amendments past the 10th because anything they can think of that’s not addressed in the first 8 are covered by the 9th and 10th. And numbers 1 through 8 are subject to their whims, such as the aforementioned belief that states can establish official religions. And, despite several of the Founders weighing in in favor of judicial review, they think Marbury v. Madison was an unconstitutional power grab on the part of SCOTUS because only states can decide if a law passed by Congress is constitutional.

welp, about 30 minutes ago I was awakened by the sound of something shattering.
Got up, stumbled in the dark yelling at the cats.
Couldn’t find anything.
House felt really cold, so I started checking the pipes.
Kitchen sink: OK
Bathroom sink: hot water=yes/cold water=no
Bathtub: hot water=yes/cold water=nothing at first, then some slush, finally water.
Flush the toilet: coughing sounds, then finally water.
Put more wood in the woodstove.
Cat comes strolling in, very smug, with a fat mouse in her mouth, taunts other cat.
Other cat is not impressed, has discovered slush in the bathtub AND there is water trickling from the tap with which to play.
I’ll be up for a while, keeping an eye on the water taps and periodically flushing the toilet.
Oh, it’s -8F here at the moment…

At least we have heat and the money to pay for it. For that, I’m thankful. Basics first has been my motto—I couldn’t have survived without following it.

Two weeks into the new Medicare prescription drug program, many of the nation’s sickest and poorest elderly and disabled people are being turned away or overcharged at pharmacies, prompting more than a dozen states to declare health emergencies and pay for their life-saving medicines.
Computer glitches, overloaded telephone lines and poorly trained pharmacists are being blamed for mix-ups that have resulted in the worst of unintended consequences: As many as 6.4 million low-income seniors, who until Dec. 31 received their medications free, suddenly find themselves navigating an insurance maze of large deductibles, co-payments and outright denial of coverage.
But true to form, democrats didn’t cry treason:
Politicians in both parties were quick to rise to the defense of a particularly vulnerable population. As a group, dual-eligibles have incomes below the poverty rate of $9,570 a year and take an average of 15 medications a day. More than half are women, 40 percent have cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s and 20 percent do not speak English, according to Finberg.

Scott Walker picked for jury duty — yes, that Scott Walker
Gov. Scott Walker can clear his calendar for the next couple of days — he’ll be serving on a jury at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
Circuit Judge Kevin Martens advised Walker and a dozen other jurors selected late Monday to arrive promptly at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for the start of what’s expected to be a two-day trial.
The governor will be hearing a personal injury lawsuit filed by Carri and Michael Natarelli and their insurance company against Gabriel Deltoro and his insurer. Martens cautioned jurors not to watch or read any media about the case, though he said he doubted there’d be any media interest in it.

-5° this morning in Columbus…heading for a high of 9°.
Last night around 2 in the am I woke up (thankfully) feeling a bit cold. Walked out into my main hall and realized, holy crap…it’s cold in here, the furnace was off. Arrrgh.
I knew what it was, it has happened before, but not quite like this. When it gets real cold that air rushing into the inlet pipe is being pulled in so fast and compressed in the inlet curve it condenses and starts to build up snow-like crystals and when they build up enough, the air flows becomes too low and the furnace sensors kick the damn thing off for safety reasons.
So, put on clothes and out into the frigid air. These old houses are close together and I have to access the one side of the house through my neighbors gate…which I have a key to. Trying to open the damn gate half asleep, with a flashlight in hand and cold…not fun. Clean out inlet pipe with bare hand (fast…it’s damn cold and too long means danger)…close and lock gate and run back into house to turn furnace back on. Damn.
I have a little electric space heater that I run and aim at the inlet pipe to keep it warm…something I learned a couple years back. I didn’t have it turned on yesterday and I should have. I’ve found in the past it is needed when there is fluffy snow blowing down between our houses when around 5° or less. My thinking yesterday was the air was dry, no fluffy snow so I thought I cold get by. Wrong. Lesson learned.
After a nice warm cup o’ tea…back to bed!
By the way…anyone heard from Hoosier Hoops and how he is doing?

On a lighter note, Ars Technica posted a story about how ahead of their shareholders meeting, the Apple board is going to be asked to get more people of color and/or women on there.
If you know anything about Ars Technica readers, you have a pretty good idea of how they react when things like white or male privilege gets pointed out. I certainly did, and thanked them for the entertainment about 90 posts in:

Was I trolling? Probably. Am I wrong? I don’t think so. Would I do it again? Hell, yeah. Someone around page 5 of the comments pulled the old “I’m not racist or sexist, but” defense.
I genuinely do think the reporting at Ars is well done, the occasional fawning over Snowden not withstanding. Some of the commenters, though? IMO, often they’re the poster children for the soft bigotry the tech world is still thoroughly enmeshed in.

4 F (3 according to my iPhone) here in Philly this morning. -5 over in Pittsburgh.
Cold enough the cat wasn’t sitting on the window sill this morning. She sat on the back of the office chair in order to look out the window. (The other cat snoozes next to me until I get up and feed them.)
About the coldest I recall it getting in Philly since I moved here six years ago. Personal experienced low however is about -30 F in the 70s when I lived in northern NY state along the St Lawrence river.

Robert Scheer at Truthdig has penned a column lauding Ed Snowden and comparing him to John Peter Zenger.
The patriotic ideology that drives Snowden is a throwback to that innate American sense of personal liberty in the face of government excess for which Zenger stood. In every interview Snowden has relied on the simple notion that informed the founders of our nation regarding the primacy of truth in public discourse.
His commitment to that ideal cannot be comprehended by a mass media culture of careerism informed by public relations that trivializes all differences of truth and logic into incomprehensible mulch. His is instead the simple veracity of the once honored slogan that the truth shall set us free and that it is overwhelming government power that is most threatening to that freedom.
What is at issue in the information Snowden’s courageous actions have revealed is our government’s denial of the core principles of the enlightenment: rule by, and of, an informed and thoughtful citizenry that has come to be smothered by the omnipresent corporatized national security state.
Oh, brother.
Flowery prose aside, comparing Snowden to Zenger makes no damn sense. Zenger was a newspaper publisher who wrote articles criticizing the royal governor of the colony of New York. He was arrested on charges of seditious libel and imprisoned for eight months. His attorney, Alexander Hamilton, argued that the truth is not libelous, and Zenger was within his legal rights to print the truth, no matter how embarrassing it was to the governor. The jury found in favor of Zenger,
Zenger was a journalist. Snowden is not. Zenger stood his ground, and was arrested and tried. Snowden skipped the country. The Zenger case is a cornerstone of a free press in the USA. Snowden’s is … what? A legal precedent? Hardly.
Another big difference is the kind of information being shared. Zenger was reporting on the actions of the royal governor, which were not secret. Others knew about them. Snowden stole secrets from the NSA, and shared them with non-citizens of the USA, or at least non-residents, in the case of Glenn Greenwald.
How are these two guys at all similar? I don’t get it.

Greets and saluts from the frozen tundra of the NYC metro area. 6 degrees on the Century 21 sign outside the building this morning. Wind chills in the unspeakable range (and while there’s a constant wind, the wind really picks up around some of the buildings here making it nearly impossible to walk.
This is pretty damned cold, but at least the house had heat, the office had heat, and we didn’t lose power like some folks in scattered outages around the City.
Meanwhile, an Amtrak train outside Chicago was stuck for hours. That’s gotta suck something harsh.

My grandddaughter just called—no water; their well undoubtedly froze up and the landlord is on the way. I told her to tell him to put a 100 watt lightbulb under the well cover and leave it there (temp is not going to get above freezing today and lower tonight, too). My son used to do that every time it fell below freezing here.
Plus, the school called and they have no heat. I asked her why the school even allowed the kids in? It was delayed 2 hrs anyway, and by the time they get it fixed and the school warm again, it will be time for them to go home anyway. If it was me, I’d go yank him out.

They didn’t excuse Rudy Guliani back when he was mayor of New york City, although that was even more odd given that Guliani is a lawyer.
Scott Walker likely did not want to be excused, as his Democratic opponents would use that to suggest that Walker thought himself above the common man. Walker does not wish to foster such thoughts and perhaps hopes to use his jury service to see how his fellow jurors see political matters. Heck, if he makes a good impression he might win over some jurors who would otherwise have voted against him in the fall.

Yea, but after this he can figure that he can handle whatever it throws at him. I know when I was stationed in Alaska the last date that somebody could be slated to arrive was in September, and earliest was March. They didn’t want people showing up in the dead of winter.

Yep. And his problem is that at the same time he has to avoid pushing it so far the middle and left get riled.
I don’t think he can do it.

I don’t think he can do it.
I think we’re going to see dancing on the precipice one or two times this year - maybe stepping off for a bit. Ceilings and shutdowns and all the rest. And we’re now too close to the election for the politicians to ‘let it blow over’.
I’m beginning to think we will continue to see a Democratic senate and Republican house.
I think McConnell can pull it off, at least as far as Kentucky is concerned, since the playing field there is well to the right of the national average.

Let’s see, chop government spending on projects that would increase employment (like infrastructure investment, research and development, etc,) and unemployment rates stagnate.
The GOP refuses to do any kind of jobs bill, infrastructure spending, or anything that might remotely increase economic activity if it means increasing spending without offsets. But to heck with everything else if you dare suggest cutting spending on defense because that would affect jobs.
The GOP recognizes that defense jobs are keyed to spending on defense, but refuse to accept that spending on other sectors would create jobs in those sectors (and spinoff jobs from those that support the initial job).
It’s not like these folks on UI want to remain on UI. Many would rather have jobs, but for the lack of hiring by businesses that continue to put their profits (and they’re raking in massive profits as per the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 and the DJIA) over hiring. Home building is rebounding in many parts of the country, home prices are rising, and the economy has turned around, but the GOP wants to show its compassion by chopping the safety net.

But she chose to avert her eyes, as to a greater degree of culpability did Joe Paterno. They didn’t excuse Rudy Guliani back when he was mayor of New york City, although that was even more odd given that Guliani is a lawyer.
Scott Walker likely did not want to be excused, as his Democratic opponents would use that to suggest that Walker thought himself above the common man. Walker does not wish to foster such thoughts and perhaps hopes to use his jury service to see how his fellow jurors see political matters. Heck, if he makes a good impression he might win over some jurors who would otherwise have voted against him in the fall.
Have a friend who is an attorney that specializes in workouts and settlements, but doesn’t do any litigation.
He was called to jury duty, so appeared and was excused. As it turned out during voir dire that he was friends with both the plaintiff and defendant.

Lawyers usually don’t want other lawyers on a jury anyway. When I was a paralegal, I was excused—they don’t want anyone who works in the legal field who might have some understanding of law and who work with it every day—they seeing it as “tainting” the jury.

That’s part of what made Rudy Guliani being picked for a jury so strange and given that it was a criminal case I’ve since wondered if the defendant’s attorney was competent. Picking a former prosecutor for a criminal trial mean the likely leader of the jury is someone who both knows the law and is unlikely to be sympathetic to the defendant.
