This is pretty cool. A friend of mine’s company designed the OLPC ($100 one laptop per child). It’s now on official Rwandan currency.

My kid bought one on a deal that sent one to Africa, and one to him. it’s part of an international Penguinista plot.

I started ignoring 60 Minutes back in the ’90s when they covered something that I actually knew details about and saw how their reports ignored or glossed over information that did not support their chosen position and narrative.

Take your choice of coverage

ESPN “Mega-Cast” Coverage:

ESPN - Standard game coverage
ESPN2 - “BCS Title Talk” with coaches, analysts, and more
ESPNEWS - “BCS Film Room” providing film breakdown as it happens
ESPN Classic - “Sounds of the BCS” providing only on field, stands, and stadium audio
ESPN Goal Line - “BCS Command Center” with live and replays side-by-side
ESPN3/WatchESPN - FSU and Auburn radio broadcasts with video coverage, “BCS Campus Connection” airing live fan reactions, “BCS Spider Cam” watching from the overhead angle

I think that’s a universal feeling for anyone who has been in a complex situation ‘explained’ by almost any journalists. I have buddies from Desert Storm who absolutely despise Christianne Amanpour, though she always seemed cool to me.

It’s why I’ve tuned out from Old Media, as it’s ceased being about the facts and is now dedicated to the “controversy.” They keep invoking Solyndra as if it’s some proof that solar can’t succeed in America, ignoring that Solyndra failed largely because the global market is already saturated by Chinese companies which have major backing from their government. China’s setting itself up as the world’s source of clean energy, while our government remains a bunch of Koch suckers who remain convinced that fossil fuels will be as relevant in 100 years as they are today.

Though I think it’s bit different from a short bit in the nightly news which is a minute or two tops without probably that much background investigation. As compared to a “news magazine” that can be topical, but often has had months to do their interviews, investigation, etc. for a 10-15 minute segment where they do have some time to cover or explain things in some depth.

Assuming that the list of firms they plan to continue supporting was honestly decided. Given the corruption in China, many if not most of the firms still being supported likely paid bribes to ensure they kept getting said support.

Also in China, they had some pretty major anti-meth action recently:

More than 3,000 paramilitary forces and police descended on a small coastal village in China’s Guangdong province — many of them in helicopters and speedboats.

In the early hours of Sunday, they conducted 109 raids in Boshe, a village of 14,000 people.

In the massive crackdown on the region’s illicit narcotic trade, police seized three tons of crystalline methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth or ice, and arrested 182 people with suspected links to 18 drug rings, according to a statement released Thursday by Guangdong’s public security bureau.

They recovered another 100 tons of raw materials for producing drugs, as well as guns, knives and a grenade, a spokesperson for the public security bureau told CNN on Friday.

Some 77 drug factories were shut down in the raid, police say.

Boshe is located inside the city of Lufeng, long considered by authorities as a hotbed for the production and trade of drugs. In the last three years, one-third of China’s crystal meth came from the city, according to the security bureau’s statement.

It’s precisely that sort of “reasoning” that ought to lead one also to inquire whether the spying cases of AIPAC’s Larry Franklin and Jonathan Pollard suggest that Jews have too much loyalty to Israel to be trusted in high government positions and with access to classified information, or whether the corruption cases of Jack Abramoff and Marc Rich prove that Jews have a desire for unwarranted profits and therefore can’t be trusted around money.

Glenn Greenwald: There Are More Snowden Documents on Israel - Diplomacy and Defense Israel News | Haaretz

Channel 10 asked Greenwald about the increasingly popular argument in Israel that given Snowden’s revelations about the scope of U.S. spying on its allies, Washington had no grounds for its continued refusal to free Pollard, who is serving a life sentence for spying on the United States on Israel’s behalf. Inter alia, the documents revealed that the U.S. National Security Agency had monitored the email address of the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office in 2009.

Greenwald agreed that the Snowden revelations are relevant to Pollard’s case. “When the U.S. government goes around the world criticizing other countries for spying on allies and prosecuting them,” he said, “are they going to maintain that with a straight face when they’re doing exactly that?”

It’s proper to raise Pollard’s case in the context of U.S. spying on its Israeli ally, he continued, because that underscores the hypocrisy of what the U.S. itself is doing. The U.S. government, Greenwald charged, does exactly what it accuses its enemies of doing, and no country has the right to say other countries shouldn’t do something while it is secretly violating that very same taboo.

No Greenwald’s going to pull out all the stops, no matter how much pretzel logic he utilizes so as to make his point.

And if it means pulling in the Pollard case, then that’s what he’s going to do.

If it also means shredding the US-Israel relationship by leaking documents that might harm the relationship, then he’s all for dumping those as well.

Of course, when it does cause harm to the relationship, he’ll just turn around and say “who me?” all while snickering that he’s doing incalculable damage to US foreign policy and national security.

Because he still gets to play like he knows more than everyone else.

It’s amazing how that works. Heck, there’s nothing released so far that relates to US-China or US-Russia. It’s all about Greenwald and Co. going after US allies and 3d parties in the hopes of making foreign policy more difficult for the US even as everyone knows everyone else spies.

81 HappyWarrior  Mon, Jan 6, 2014 6:12:19pm

Greenwald is playing to a very simplistic worldview where spying is not allowed. It brings to mind the phrase used by then Secretary of War, Henry Stinson upon discovering espionage done on the Japanese in the late 20’s and early 30’s- Gentlemen do not reach other’s mail. Greenwald panders through his writings, tweets, and rhetoric to that part of the world that doesn’t accept that espionage is a dirty but vital part of foreign affairs.

Ask them why it is that we should be concerned about whether the NSA is spying on on allies, bugging phones, or gathering intelligence on foreign leaders. And then ask them if they really, honestly believe that none of our allies spy on us.

92 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jan 6, 2014 6:21:04pm

I have to hand it to Edward Snowden. He couldn’t possibly have found a better tool to hand over his stolen documents to. Greenwald’s ego has expanded to the point where he’s trying to change the course of US foreign policy toward some kind of twisted libertarian ideal — and Snowden gave him some very powerful tools by violating the basic agreements nation states have operated under for centuries.

It’s releases like this that make it harder and harder to say that anything good came from Snowden. If it had stopped within our borders, focused strictly on accusations of NSA domestic spying, dudebros might have been able to make a convincing case that he was really a whistleblower focused on addressing the excesses of post-9/11 politics. But it didn’t stop there, it became a vendetta against the NSA, and that has made it easier to argue that the man was working to hurt somebody, whether it was his former employers or the US at large, rather than any dedication to rights or freedoms.

Conservatives stage ‘uprising’ demanding sheriffs ‘take back’ Utah from ‘homosexuals’

The CSPOA’s “uprising” consisted of a meeting in which a standing-room only crowd of same-sex marriage opponents watched PowerPoint presentations about the federal government overstepping its authority. Organizers and speakers claim that Governor Gary Herbert has failed the people of Utah, and that it is up to the sheriff’s to “take back” the state from “the homosexuals.”

Former Graham County, Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack said that “[t]he people of Utah have rights, too, not just the homosexuals. The homosexuals are shoving their agenda down our throats.”

He claimed that the only way to “take back freedom in America is one county at a time. The sheriffs need to defend the county clerks in saying, ‘No, we’re not going to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals.’”

One of the event’s organizers, Cherilyn Eager, concurred, telling Fox 13 that “[w]e need people to stand up and speak out. We need to get noisy. We need some outrage. It is about the sheriffs now coming out to protect the people.”

Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA, for short) is a US wingnut group that believes that sheriffs are “the highest executive authority in a county and therefore constitutionally empowered to be able to keep federal agents out of the county”.[1] It promotes this viewpoint as a method of saving the country from tuh overbearing fedrul gubnmint. Their membership consists of a staggering fourteen sheriffs, one county commissioner, and one chief of police, drawn from thirteen states (mostly southern and western). The organization draws much of its philosophy from the similar sovereign citizen and Posse Comitatus movements…

Former Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack Seeks ‘Army’ of Sheriffs to Resist Federal Authority

He’s a graduate of the FBI National Academy who preaches that county sheriffs are the highest legitimate law enforcement officials in the land. He’s a hard-right libertarian who believes the federal government has no authority to require drivers to wear seat belts and who once demanded the government give him back the $4,800 he paid in income taxes. He’s a self-styled “constitutional conservative” with little or no formal legal training who believes that states can ignore federal laws they don’t like, despite clear language in the U.S. Constitution that says otherwise.

Meet Richard Mack — or “Sheriff Mack,” as he is more commonly known.

Mack, 59, is the raven-haired former sheriff of a sparsely populated Arizona county who was catapulted from obscurity to right-wing fame in the mid-1990s when he challenged the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and won a U.S. Supreme Court victory that weakened the gun-control law signed by President Bill Clinton…

Whether he’s speaking to local chapters of the JBS or appearing on far-right radio shows like James Edwards’ white nationalist program “The Political Cesspool,” Mack’s central message is that the federal government has far overstepped its constitutional bounds and that county sheriffs have the rightful authority — and duty — to protect citizens from what he believes are its unlawful incursions. This idea that sheriffs have supremacy over other law enforcement agencies and even the federal government was born and gained traction in the 1970s and 1980s when it was pushed by the explicitly racist, anti-Semitic Posse Comitatus (Latin for “power of the county”), which capitalized on the Midwestern farm crisis of the era to promote an extreme antigovernment ideology. The Posse’s founding tract, the so-called Blue Book written by white supremacist Henry Lamont Beach, asserted the county was “the highest authority of government in our Republic.”…

Needless to say, we are seeing a lot of violent and revolutionary rhetoric from the right. No matter how ludicrous and garbled it might be, enough of it will sooner or later lead to some major action by the small percentage of true believers.
It is interesting that there is almost no contrasting attempt by the far left to revive the revolutionary and violent rhetoric of Vietnam era far-left terrorists, still less to emulate European Cold War terrorists like the Baader-Meinhof gang. When we do see violent talk from the left, it is from the fringe of the fringe, mostly the drug culture, where it blends seamlessly into the right wing’s libertarian fringe.

I’ve quizzed a dudebro on occasion about what the endgame for this whole “popular uprising” business is. After all, in their minds, they rise up against the “tyrannical” government and imprison many of those holding office for their “unconstitutional” actions. But what then? Call elections to elect a new government? That just puts them at risk of the same sort of people they disapprove of being elected. Install a military government or appoint one? No provision for that in the Constitution, so they’d be in violation of it.

The response I usually got? That they hadn’t thought that far, but were sure when the time came, those who’d overthrown the popularly elected government would make sure that the Constitution was followed.

Let’s put it this way — the long-ass UN document he refers to in his syllabus is from a series of Congresses the UN has every five years to discuss criminal issues and law . It’s interesting he points to one from 1990 when there have been a bunch more since then.

Here’s the most recent UN recap of all their Congresses on crime and law. It’s fairly short and just hits the major bullet points: PDF

It’s hilarious to me that a sovereign citizen type would use the UN as the basis of his legal philosophy.

Also, the pro hac vice rule he points to actually varies by state, since they all have their own standards for what that means and how an unlicensed lawyer can participate in the local courts.

With the key point being that they tend to require you to be licensed in another state AND that your license meet all other state bar requirements besides passing the state bar exam.

Since for every state but California this means getting a degree from an ABA accredited law school, it should be obvious how likely authorization from the state is going to be.

Treaty of Tripoli, passed unanimously by Congress in 1797

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Mohammedan] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

The scary part is that I really believe that in his own mind he doesn’t see any problem or conflict. Since he (and the rest of that camp) tend to refer to anything that isn’t mainstream or fundamental Christian as a “False” religion, there is no issue. The constitution protects “Religions”, and since those are “FALSE” they aren’t protected.

I’m not being facetious on this one, I really truly believe that is how their minds work.

So everything after the Bill of Rights, then?

Basically. In their minds, there’s no need for amendments past the 10th because anything they can think of that’s not addressed in the first 8 are covered by the 9th and 10th. And numbers 1 through 8 are subject to their whims, such as the aforementioned belief that states can establish official religions. And, despite several of the Founders weighing in in favor of judicial review, they think Marbury v. Madison was an unconstitutional power grab on the part of SCOTUS because only states can decide if a law passed by Congress is constitutional.

From a petition by James Madison, 1875, in opposition to Patrick Henry’s application for a bill to establish a tax for the support of the Christian religion:

Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects? that the same authority which can force a citizen to contribute three pence only of his property for the support of any one establishment, may force him to conform to any other establishment in all cases whatsoever?

Got up, stumbled in the dark yelling at the cats.
Couldn’t find anything.
House felt really cold, so I started checking the pipes.
Kitchen sink: OK
Bathroom sink: hot water=yes/cold water=no
Bathtub: hot water=yes/cold water=nothing at first, then some slush, finally water.
Flush the toilet: coughing sounds, then finally water.
Put more wood in the woodstove.

Cat comes strolling in, very smug, with a fat mouse in her mouth, taunts other cat.

Other cat is not impressed, has discovered slush in the bathtub AND there is water trickling from the tap with which to play.

I’ll be up for a while, keeping an eye on the water taps and periodically flushing the toilet.

Apple, Amazon downgraded ‘on moral and ethical grounds’

cnbc.com

“One analyst blacklisted several companies on Monday, citing a reason not often (or possibly ever) heard on Wall Street—moral and ethical grounds.

“In the report, Ronnie Moas, Standpoint Research’s founder and director of research, downgraded Apple stock from a “hold” to a “sell,” reiterated a “sell” recommendation for Amazon.com shares and initiated Philip Morris stock with a “sell” rating.

(snip)

“I recently read something about Amazon and how much pressure is on their employees … and at the same time Jeff Bezos with his obscene net worth of $27 bln was on his yacht in the Galapagos Islands. $27 bln and this man is not treating his workers fairly? It boggles the mind,” Moas wrote.”

Regardless of the fact that Moas is actually talking about Apple contractors in China, using such facilities for the parts and labor that go into their products, Apple and any company that operates in a similar manner could actually afford to pay and treat workers much better than they do and still make huge profits.

After all, if it wasn’t about the bottom line and increasing both their company and personal wealth and rewarding investors, any company could treat workers with the dignity and respect all of us deserve.

Blast from the past regarding GW Bush’s disastrous new Medicare program rollout.

The States Step In As Medicare Falters

Two weeks into the new Medicare prescription drug program, many of the nation’s sickest and poorest elderly and disabled people are being turned away or overcharged at pharmacies, prompting more than a dozen states to declare health emergencies and pay for their life-saving medicines.

Computer glitches, overloaded telephone lines and poorly trained pharmacists are being blamed for mix-ups that have resulted in the worst of unintended consequences: As many as 6.4 million low-income seniors, who until Dec. 31 received their medications free, suddenly find themselves navigating an insurance maze of large deductibles, co-payments and outright denial of coverage.

But true to form, democrats didn’t cry treason:

Politicians in both parties were quick to rise to the defense of a particularly vulnerable population. As a group, dual-eligibles have incomes below the poverty rate of $9,570 a year and take an average of 15 medications a day. More than half are women, 40 percent have cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s and 20 percent do not speak English, according to Finberg.

Hmm that’s funny. Not one teabagger interviewed for the article. Where were they?

Gov. Scott Walker can clear his calendar for the next couple of days — he’ll be serving on a jury at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.

Circuit Judge Kevin Martens advised Walker and a dozen other jurors selected late Monday to arrive promptly at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for the start of what’s expected to be a two-day trial.

The governor will be hearing a personal injury lawsuit filed by Carri and Michael Natarelli and their insurance company against Gabriel Deltoro and his insurer. Martens cautioned jurors not to watch or read any media about the case, though he said he doubted there’d be any media interest in it.

-5° this morning in Columbus…heading for a high of 9°.

Last night around 2 in the am I woke up (thankfully) feeling a bit cold. Walked out into my main hall and realized, holy crap…it’s cold in here, the furnace was off. Arrrgh.

I knew what it was, it has happened before, but not quite like this. When it gets real cold that air rushing into the inlet pipe is being pulled in so fast and compressed in the inlet curve it condenses and starts to build up snow-like crystals and when they build up enough, the air flows becomes too low and the furnace sensors kick the damn thing off for safety reasons.

So, put on clothes and out into the frigid air. These old houses are close together and I have to access the one side of the house through my neighbors gate…which I have a key to. Trying to open the damn gate half asleep, with a flashlight in hand and cold…not fun. Clean out inlet pipe with bare hand (fast…it’s damn cold and too long means danger)…close and lock gate and run back into house to turn furnace back on. Damn.

I have a little electric space heater that I run and aim at the inlet pipe to keep it warm…something I learned a couple years back. I didn’t have it turned on yesterday and I should have. I’ve found in the past it is needed when there is fluffy snow blowing down between our houses when around 5° or less. My thinking yesterday was the air was dry, no fluffy snow so I thought I cold get by. Wrong. Lesson learned.

After a nice warm cup o’ tea…back to bed!

By the way…anyone heard from Hoosier Hoops and how he is doing?

On a lighter note, Ars Technica posted a story about how ahead of their shareholders meeting, the Apple board is going to be asked to get more people of color and/or women on there.

If you know anything about Ars Technica readers, you have a pretty good idea of how they react when things like white or male privilege gets pointed out. I certainly did, and thanked them for the entertainment about 90 posts in:

LOL, I saw the title of the article on the front page and immediately thought “I wonder how angry/defensive the Ars crowd will get when lack of diversity gets pointed out?”

The “We have to stop looking at race and gender in order to be truly diverse” comments are the most hilarious, Especially considering that in all likelihood, those comments are coming from white guys who have no idea how much privilege they have.

You know who says shit like that? Stephen Colbert. Unlike some of the butthurt Ars commenters, he’s playing a character who believes that nonsense.

Thanks for not disappointing, kids. Downding away!!!

Got a warning from a Ars board monitor about trolling. Made me laugh.

Was I trolling? Probably. Am I wrong? I don’t think so. Would I do it again? Hell, yeah. Someone around page 5 of the comments pulled the old “I’m not racist or sexist, but” defense.

I genuinely do think the reporting at Ars is well done, the occasional fawning over Snowden not withstanding. Some of the commenters, though? IMO, often they’re the poster children for the soft bigotry the tech world is still thoroughly enmeshed in.

4 F (3 according to my iPhone) here in Philly this morning. -5 over in Pittsburgh.

Cold enough the cat wasn’t sitting on the window sill this morning. She sat on the back of the office chair in order to look out the window. (The other cat snoozes next to me until I get up and feed them.)

About the coldest I recall it getting in Philly since I moved here six years ago. Personal experienced low however is about -30 F in the 70s when I lived in northern NY state along the St Lawrence river.

Robert Scheer at Truthdig has penned a column lauding Ed Snowden and comparing him to John Peter Zenger.

The patriotic ideology that drives Snowden is a throwback to that innate American sense of personal liberty in the face of government excess for which Zenger stood. In every interview Snowden has relied on the simple notion that informed the founders of our nation regarding the primacy of truth in public discourse.

His commitment to that ideal cannot be comprehended by a mass media culture of careerism informed by public relations that trivializes all differences of truth and logic into incomprehensible mulch. His is instead the simple veracity of the once honored slogan that the truth shall set us free and that it is overwhelming government power that is most threatening to that freedom.

What is at issue in the information Snowden’s courageous actions have revealed is our government’s denial of the core principles of the enlightenment: rule by, and of, an informed and thoughtful citizenry that has come to be smothered by the omnipresent corporatized national security state.

Oh, brother.

Flowery prose aside, comparing Snowden to Zenger makes no damn sense. Zenger was a newspaper publisher who wrote articles criticizing the royal governor of the colony of New York. He was arrested on charges of seditious libel and imprisoned for eight months. His attorney, Alexander Hamilton, argued that the truth is not libelous, and Zenger was within his legal rights to print the truth, no matter how embarrassing it was to the governor. The jury found in favor of Zenger,

Zenger was a journalist. Snowden is not. Zenger stood his ground, and was arrested and tried. Snowden skipped the country. The Zenger case is a cornerstone of a free press in the USA. Snowden’s is … what? A legal precedent? Hardly.

Another big difference is the kind of information being shared. Zenger was reporting on the actions of the royal governor, which were not secret. Others knew about them. Snowden stole secrets from the NSA, and shared them with non-citizens of the USA, or at least non-residents, in the case of Glenn Greenwald.

How are these two guys at all similar? I don’t get it.

Greets and saluts from the frozen tundra of the NYC metro area. 6 degrees on the Century 21 sign outside the building this morning. Wind chills in the unspeakable range (and while there’s a constant wind, the wind really picks up around some of the buildings here making it nearly impossible to walk.

This is pretty damned cold, but at least the house had heat, the office had heat, and we didn’t lose power like some folks in scattered outages around the City.

Meanwhile, an Amtrak train outside Chicago was stuck for hours. That’s gotta suck something harsh.

Comparing Snowden to Zenger? That’s a new one. I’ll give them points on originality. But by going to these new lengths, it shows that they’re running out of excuses for his actions.

While these dudebros are at it, why not compare him to Nathan Hale? If you’re going to go with nonsensical analogies, why not go all the way?

Oh wait. Snowden isn’t willing to pay the consequences of his actions. He fled to a country that benefits from his release of classified US documents, and refuses to come back to the US because he fears being prosecuted (for all the crimes he committed - including countless counts of espionage and passing classified information to those unauthorized to have it).

My grandddaughter just called—no water; their well undoubtedly froze up and the landlord is on the way. I told her to tell him to put a 100 watt lightbulb under the well cover and leave it there (temp is not going to get above freezing today and lower tonight, too). My son used to do that every time it fell below freezing here.

Plus, the school called and they have no heat. I asked her why the school even allowed the kids in? It was delayed 2 hrs anyway, and by the time they get it fixed and the school warm again, it will be time for them to go home anyway. If it was me, I’d go yank him out.

Walker should be excused from jury duty.

They didn’t excuse Rudy Guliani back when he was mayor of New york City, although that was even more odd given that Guliani is a lawyer.

Scott Walker likely did not want to be excused, as his Democratic opponents would use that to suggest that Walker thought himself above the common man. Walker does not wish to foster such thoughts and perhaps hopes to use his jury service to see how his fellow jurors see political matters. Heck, if he makes a good impression he might win over some jurors who would otherwise have voted against him in the fall.

I was an anti-war protestor. If the FBI was monitoring me, they were bored. OTOH, even though I considered myself pretty “radical”, I wasn’t trying to bring the US govt down, either, or engage in criminal activity. The fact that an outspoken Haverford College professor wasn’t monitored, nor were the people he engaged in his scheme, also shows that no, the entire anti-war movement was not as monitored as many thought it was.

Notice how “brave” those who broke into the FBI office in Media were: they waited until the statute of limitations for any criminal charges are over. And 3 of them still refuse to come forward.

The GOP refuses to do any kind of jobs bill, infrastructure spending, or anything that might remotely increase economic activity if it means increasing spending without offsets. But to heck with everything else if you dare suggest cutting spending on defense because that would affect jobs.

The GOP recognizes that defense jobs are keyed to spending on defense, but refuse to accept that spending on other sectors would create jobs in those sectors (and spinoff jobs from those that support the initial job).

It’s not like these folks on UI want to remain on UI. Many would rather have jobs, but for the lack of hiring by businesses that continue to put their profits (and they’re raking in massive profits as per the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 and the DJIA) over hiring. Home building is rebounding in many parts of the country, home prices are rising, and the economy has turned around, but the GOP wants to show its compassion by chopping the safety net.

Now lawhawk, you know better. Their “compassion” is in kicking those people off UI, because it’s holding them down, keeping them from getting out there and finding a new job. Yeah, so what if there’s 3 applicants to every 1 job opening, surely there’s some jobs out there that they can work 2 or 3 at a time to make ends meet. It’ll be better for them in the long run, finding a backbreaking job in their twilight years to cover the gap between today and when Medicare and SS kick in.

Sorry Gus, but no. I agree with JAH: I cannot imagine that she did not know her husband was sick in the head, although perhaps she did not know the depths of his evil. But she chose to avert her eyes, as to a greater degree of culpability did Joe Paterno. For doing such she must pay the penalty and as JAH said she’s lucky that is only the loss of her husband’s pension. That money would by rights belong to Jerry Sandusky’s victims, not to her.

WTFITS

His commitment to that ideal cannot be comprehended by a mass media culture of careerism informed by public relations that trivializes all differences of truth and logic into incomprehensible mulch. His is instead the simple veracity of the once honored slogan that the truth shall set us free and that it is overwhelming government power that is most threatening to that freedom.

I read this paragraph three freaking times and it makes no sense whatsoever. Scheer must have been drunk.

re: #336 Internet Tough Guy

No, he’s not. John Galt, at least as written by Ayn Rand, had a good idea of what he wanted to build after bringing down the ‘Looters’. Edward Snowden, by contrast, just has a bunch of complaints he ‘wants addressed’ and has no real idea of who things are to function after that is done.

The preceding should not be read as a defense of Objectivism. Ayn Rand’s ideas were very wrong, but unlike Snowden she did take the time and trouble to flesh them out.

Lawyers usually don’t want other lawyers on a jury anyway. When I was a paralegal, I was excused—they don’t want anyone who works in the legal field who might have some understanding of law and who work with it every day—they seeing it as “tainting” the jury.

That’s part of what made Rudy Guliani being picked for a jury so strange and given that it was a criminal case I’ve since wondered if the defendant’s attorney was competent. Picking a former prosecutor for a criminal trial mean the likely leader of the jury is someone who both knows the law and is unlikely to be sympathetic to the defendant.

I grew up in Detroit in the 70s and 80s while the Pistons and the Bad Boys wreaked havoc in the NBA. I was a HUGE Rodman fan when he was a Piston. I was crushed when he was traded to SA. Little did we know what was brewing inside.

I cheered when the Bulls signed him, as he was the rebound expert Chicago needed to win championships, and for three years he played the role Horace Grant had played in the Bulls’ first “Threepeat” run. For that reason, I am frustrated and angered by Rodman’s actions but I’ll never hate him.

No, sorry, this is not “innovative”. And really, depending on “friends” to give the correct answers?

As a rival fan across the lake, it was painful to see Rodman in that uni….almost as painful as seeing Chris Chelios wear the Winged Wheel.

In other border briefs provided by the agency, a 24-year-old Phoenix woman on her way into Mexico on New Year’s Day was busted with 6,000 rounds of ammunition, and in separate incidents, a Mexican woman attempted to bring 15 pounds of meth into the U.S., and an Avondale man tried to bring in 50 pounds of meth.

That first story may inspire yet more ‘Fast and Furious’ carping, especially since one of the guns that was ‘walked’ was recently used in a shootout at a Mexican resort.

That’s not the only thing about that shootout that should get more attention.

Looks like an ice sculpture, and probably was only good for one when that car thawed out-ice in every seam and joint makes the thing undriveable.

Lawyers usually don’t want other lawyers on a jury anyway. When I was a paralegal, I was excused—they don’t want anyone who works in the legal field who might have some understanding of law and who work with it every day—they seeing it as “tainting” the jury.

Most attorneys in Miami, just call the clerk and get removed from jury panels.

My friend who is the rainmaker for his firm, is a genuine nice guy. He, was curious what the procedure looked like from the jury side, and decided to appear in person.

The only jury I didn’t get excused from appearing while working for law firms was a federal grand jury.
