Gov. Christie’s Political Problems Just Grew To GWB Traffic Jam Sized Proportions

Political Vendetta
LGF • Views: 20,466

After months of denying that he or his staff had anything to do with the George Washington Bridge lane closures that caused massive traffic jams in Fort Lee and caused a public safety mess for the city or that the lane closures were politically motivated, new emails and text messages that were sought by The Record reveal that there were, in fact, political motivations involved.

The messages are replete with references and insults to Fort Lee’s mayor, who had failed to endorse Christie for re-election and they chronicle how they tried to reach Port Authority officials in a vain effort to eliminate the paralyzing gridlock that overwhelmed his town of 35,000 which sits in the shadow of the bridge, the world’s busiest.

The documents obtained by The Record raise serious doubts about months of claims by the Christie administration that the September closures of local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge were part of a traffic study initiated solely by the Port Authority. Instead, they show that one of the governor’s top aides was deeply involved in the decision to choke off the borough’s access to the bridge, and they provide the strongest indication yet that it was part of a politically-motivated vendetta—a notion that Christie has publicly denied.

“Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” Bridget Anne Kelly, one of three deputies on Christie’s senior staff, wrote to David Wildstein, a top Christie executive at the Port Authority, on Aug. 13, about three weeks before the closures. Wildstein, the official who ordered the closures and who resigned last month amid the escalating scandal, wrote back: “Got it.”

Other top Christie associates mentioned in or copied on the email chain, all after the top New York appointee at the authority ordered the lanes reopened, include David Samson, the chairman of the agency; Bill Stepien, Christie’s re-election campaign manager and the newly appointed state GOP chairman; and Michael Drewniak, Christie’s spokesman.

Christie has previously said that no one in his staff or campaign was involved in the lane closings, and he has dismissed questions about political retribution by joking that he moved the traffic cones himself.

While Gov. Christie’s pal David Wildstein has already been sacked and Bob Baroni, who was Christie’s top pick at the Port Authority resigned, the emails reveal that the traffic mess was initiated by those in Christie’s inner circle.

This shows just how petty Christie’s staffers were, in a race that was never going to be all that close.

Not only do the Governor’s political appointees at the Port Authority need to be scrutinized for their actions, but the state needs to hold Gov. Christie accountable for this act of partisan hackery that undermined public safety in Fort Lee - all because the mayor wasn’t going to endorse the Governor across party lines.

The governor not only needs to apologize to Fort Lee residents, but he needs to clean house of his staffers who went down this path.

I’m sure that local politicians are looking at whether criminal charges could be filed in relation to interfering with public safety by engaging in a political vendetta against the mayor.

It’s possibly actionable under the state’s Code of Criminal Justice. Various charges could include violating the Execution of Public Duty under 2C:3-3, Crime of corruption of public resources under 2C:27-12, and Obstructing Highways and Other Public Passages under 2C:33-7.

As with the NJ Transit rail fleet flooding debacle, Gov. Christie has let those involved get off easy. That has stop. He has to hold those involved accountable, and he has to take responsibility himself for these actions. Every day that he lets these staffers stay on in Trenton is another day that this scandal grows.

And I’m saying this as someone who voted for Christie. He personally did well in the Sandy aftermath excluding the NJ Transit rail fleet flooding flap, but this action has parallels to the NJ Transit mess. He’s let his underlings/staffers get off without so much as a slap on the wrist for engaging in actions that put state assets at risk (in the NJT instance) and lives at risk (in GWB lane closures).

He’s got to fire those involved and allow the AG or federal prosecutors to investigate this fully. You can’t engage in a political vendetta like this, where lives can be put at risk - and Fort Lee documented how police, fire and EMS were unable to respond quickly due to the traffic jams that blocked most of the city as a result of the lane closures to the bridge.

Not sure how Christie makes this go away now. When it was seemingly isolated to the Port Authority, he could hope it would end there, that their stonewalling in the face of subpoenas would be enough to stall investigators. Now the stink goes all the way to his inner circle, and is going to draw accusations that he either knew about the shutdown in advance or learned of it after the fact and did nothing. The press will no doubt make excuses for him, find ways to say that he was totally in the dark, but that’s not going to help him when he starts running for the White House next year.

“Is it wrong that I’m smiling,” the recipient of the text message responded to Wildstein. The person’s identity is not clear because the documents are partially redacted for unknown reasons.

“No,” Wildstein wrote in response.

“I feel badly about the kids,” the person replied to Wildstein. “I guess.”

“They are the children of Buono voters,” Wildstein wrote, making a reference to Barbara Buono, the Democratic candidate for governor, who lost to Christie in a landslide in November.

22 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 8, 2014 9:35:58am

It’s not the crime; it’s the coverup.

It’s the stonewalling and claims that this was a legitimate study of traffic, even though it didn’t follow any established protocol.

It’s that each FOIA or subpoena reveals documents showing that PANYNJ staffers and now Christie administration officials were in contact and directing this action.

We’re talking about a political vendetta and abuse of power. You know, the things that kind of matter regardless of what state you’re in and who you’re talking about.

This is one of those instances where you can see how media coverage will fall depending on the political affiliation, even when it shouldn’t matter.

It’s real easy to do a thought experiment since the Port Authority is a bistate agency and Gov. Cuomo appoints individuals to top posts in the agency just as Gov. Christie does.

If you were to flip this around and it was Gov. Cuomo’s appointees on the PANYNJ who were talking with Cuomo’s office about punishing Bloomberg for not endorsing him and caused backups into Manhattan by limiting access from the Harlem River or Henry Hudson into the GWB, you’d see the same people who are ignoring the issue demanding resignations from the top on down.

Cuomo’s appointee, Patrick Foye, actually stopped the lane shutdown and intimated that it might have violated state law. That’s my assessment as well.

On the Internet, everything is forever. And if one side of a conversation deletes emails, don’t expect the other side to have done the same. Subpoenas and FOIA will claw back all those loose ends, and see who said what to who and who deleted what (indicating a further coverup).

That these folks were doing so on “private” emails shows that they knew they were up to no good and that this wasn’t through official channels. There was nothing legitimate about these lane closures.

It was a political vendetta.

re: #22 lawhawk

Personally think what’s going to be the biggest pain in Christie’s ass is his initial insistence that nobody in his office had anything to do with this, that it began and ended with the Port Authority. He’s pretty much invited state Democrats to now insist on deeper investigations, to find out if anything else has been going on in his office that he’s not aware of. I imagine that private email accounts and so forth are being purged as we speak, in order to burn as many paper trails as possible.

Christie seems to be a ‘nothing happens without my initiating it or okaying it’ kind of guy. I have a hard time believing it was his staff that implemented this. They may try to make it look that way, but I think Christie either put this into action himself, or he asked his staff for suggestions and then picked this one as the plan to mess with the Mayor.

No way in my opinion this doesn’t go right to Christie himself. I don’t think his staff would do anything to make him look bad and the fact that he has held onto the staff without investigations and/or firing anyone says to me he is thinking he can control the outcome of all this too.

Bullies are control freaks. They also deny they are bullies.

40 jaunte  Wed, Jan 8, 2014 9:49:52am
But the private messages, mostly sent through personal e-mails accounts, indicate that Kelly, a senior staff member in the governor’s office, was involved in the planning and received updates during the week of the traffic jams. She was also informed that week that Christie’s executives at the Port Authority were ignoring the Fort Lee mayor’s desperate attempts to get a reason for the sudden unannounced closures, as the borough’s first responders struggled to respond to emergencies and buses arrived late on the first day of school.

Nice work, Gov.

The fucking anger I have right now over the GWB closures keeps growing every time I read it about it.

This is what I’ve been bitching about on forums for the last few years whenever people float the absolutely idiotic notion that Christie is the rational moderate the GOP needs.

This is the real Chris Christie, folks. A guy who hires people who willingly and without remorse endangered an entire town as petty political payback.

As much as the rest of the country constantly shits on us, I’ve never been embarrassed to say I’m from New Jersey.

Today, not so much.

NRO’s Jim Geraghty on the Bridge Bottleneck:

If the allegations are true, the lane closures would represent a petty and obnoxious abuse of authority, one worrisome in a potential president. Some may erroneously insist this is a display of toughness or hard-nosed political power, but the form of the vindictiveness punished Fort Lee commuters of all political stripes, not just the mayor. The state isn’t given the authority to shut down road lanes as a tool for enforcing political loyalty, and it’s rather shocking that this point needs to be made.

In other news, I am informed that objecting to this means you would prefer “a Sharon Angle-type” as the 2016 Republican presidential nominee, and that it is “absurd” to “link” Christie to e-mails sent by his deputy chief of staff.

Perhaps this is all the work of rogue low-level employees in the Cincinnati office.

Exposes your candidate? Hillary? If anything, the excerpts paint Hillary in a positive light compared to Obama and Biden.

And this scandal didn’t just show up today. It showed up in September 2013 during the NJ election season. The emails go back to August 2013. They’re revealed now because of the FOIA/subpoenas to get them. And they’re all bad news for Christie because that’s exactly what they are.

Strip away the partisan political nonsense, and it is an abuse of power by those involved in those emails.

Even as Geraghty tries to stay above the fray, he gets the IRS ‘scandal’ wrong on key facts and details.

The IRS has to interpret the IRC and federal law. It doesn’t have sufficient personnel to check all applications, so the IRS has to use criteria to see if entities are trying to get benefits/status they’re not entitled to.

Turns out that entities across the political spectrum were. Not just TPers.

The fix is one that Congress wont touch, because it would gore too many interests.

Spain government to seek abortion consensus after party dissent

MADRID, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Spain’s ruling People’s Party (PP) sought on Wednesday to stem dissent within its ranks over a law that will make it harder for a woman to get an abortion, saying it would seek consensus over the planned legislation.

“The draft, unveiled by the centre-right government last month, would only allow abortion in the case of rape or if the pregnancy posed a serious physical or mental health risk to the mother.

“The new rules, which prompted protests across the country, would make Spain one of the most restrictive European countries on terminations.”

Don’t know how Mussina only gets 21% of the vote. He’s closer to Glavine than Glavine is to Maddux in my opinion. Not sure he’s a HoFer but he was something in his prime. Closest I ever got to seeing a perfect game pitched was when he came two outs from pitching one against Cleveland in ‘97.

Maddux, who won 355 games, the eighth-highest figure in Major League history, saw his name appear on 97.2 percent of the ballots, falling short of the all-time mark still held by Tom Seaver, who was elected on 98.84 percent of the vote in 1992. Glavine, who won 305 games, fourth-most among left-handers, was at 91.9 percent, and Thomas, a first baseman and designated hitter, who batted .301, hit 521 homers and amassed 1,704 RBIs in 19 seasons, 16 of them with the White Sox, finished at 83.7.

Biggio came .2% from getting into the HoF this year. I’d say he’d be in line to get in next year. The trio that made it did so as legitimate 1st ballot HoFers. Biggio falls just short of that line IMO.

As much as I hate to invoke Watergate, it really does seem similar. Yup. I know that. You know that. But Wildstein’s going to attempt to bluster his way out of the hearing. Shouldn’t work, and holding him in contempt will help clarify matters for the public too - as long as the media reminds everyone that the legislature does in fact have that power.

To be perfectly honest, the reverse is probably more-true. My understanding is that the Democratic nominee got *no* support from the national party. It was sort of a quid pro for soft pedaling the Booker Senatorial.

And I’m not saying that this was the wrong thing to do, mind you. An (R) in the Governor’s Mansion with a (D)-led state legislature can only really get up to so much mischief (see also: bridge shit) versus a seat in what was, let’s remember, still a 60-vote body when Booker was elected to it.

But willingness to do this tacit deal was probably at least aided by a popular perception among the party (outside of NJ, mind you) that Christie is both more moderate and more reasonable than his history supports (see also: bridge shit).

226 geoffm33  Wed, Jan 8, 2014 12:01:06pm

Had some fun with a scammer today. Got a call from someone claiming to be from some support company and asked me to do some things on my computer to see it was infected with malware. Here were the instructions:

hold windows key + r to open the run box
type in the run box: inf
hit enter

This opens up the C: Windows inf folder which is full of system files.

The tech uses that info as evidence there are baad files on your PC.

He then says in order to get rid of them you should open internet explorer and access a URL he provides.

I lead him along the whole way (I was in the kitchen with my *Mac* in my laptop bag).

We got to the point where I was supposed to enter the URL into Internet Explorer and I told him I didn’t know how. I didn’t have that installed. He asked how is that possible and I told him I didn’t own a computer.

I asked him for a callback number for when I get a computer, as he was very helpful and concerned.

Here is a link to a similar incident and the same phone number that they gave me.

Christie is the kind of guy who yells at public school teachers while on the campaign trail and calls his constituents “jerk”, “idiot” and “numbnuts”. (Christie used to be a lobbyist for a school privatization company, and he really, really does not like public school teachers.)

He based his image on being a trash talking bully. That works in Jersey, I suppose…but you can see why the Romney campaign ran away from him after the campaign research people said he had a veritable morgue hiding in his closet.

re: #264 FemNaziBitch

I never wanted children or to get married. Then I met my husband. I will say, that having had a child I tend to feel the same way about those who don’t. It’s something I can’t explain.

That said, it’s a matter of choice. Marriage and Motherhood were MY CHOICE. I can’t imagine how I would feel if it weren’t.

I’m not sure I could love a child in the way I love my child if that child was forced on me, that I didn’t want.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be that child.

Before we got married, my wife-to-be made it very clear that she didn’t ever want to have children. I made my peace with this, even though I’d always imagined I’d be a father some day. Then out of the blue, somewhere around age 32 or 33 (i.e., after 10 years of marriage), she informed me she’d changed her mind and wanted kids after all. We now have two and I wouldn’t give up the experience for anything, even though our older child is severely disabled and will never be able to live independently. I think there’s something about having children that can’t be understood if you haven’t had them yourself, but of course I’d never want to foist that upon anyone who didn’t want it (as indeed I didn’t try to foist children upon my wife when she didn’t want them.)

You’d also wonder about the Japanese continuing to build high-rises after the 3rd or 4th time Godzilla (or other monster) rampaged through Osaka or Kyoto knocking them down. re: #252 Flying Squirrel Girl

Agreed.

Child-FREE, not child-LESS is how I have to explain the fact that at 43 I have no children. I’ve actually had someone say to me, “Your life must be so empty!”

And to the marriage issue, I’ve been there done that and don’t see the point in doing it again. I’ve been with the same partner for 11 years and his parents still don’t understand “why we would go as far as pretending to be married but not do it!”

I don’t even try to explain.

The valid reason for marriage applies here - worth thinking about. Simplistically, marriage is a civil recognition of de facto power of attorney. With that one formal document either of you can act on the other’s behalf.

On the other hand it’s an extraordinarily powerful document that is difficult to disengage if/when you fall out of trust. Less so than it’s been in the past, but still difficult.

meh - your life, your call.

A friend and I were speculating what would be the real-life consequences of a Godzilla attack on a major urban area, and I said, “That’s one of the few incidents that I’d sincerely describe as ‘apocalyptic’ if actually happened; the casualties not only from collapsed buildings, but indeed, from radiation poisoning would boggle the mind.”

Also, the military must never do an “After Action Review” and “Lessons Learned” since they always do the same ineffectual things for each new monster. Same with the police. I’m not sure who figured that shooting a 50 foot monster with a 9mm pistol is effective for anything other than drawing attention to yourself. (and getting squashed / eaten / flame-blasted). I’m no lawyer, but could Christie et al. have been breaking any laws pertaining to interstate commerce by purposely retarding the flow of traffic between two states?

I don’t think so. That doesn’t mean that someone wont try. However, the Port Authority is facing lawsuits over the exceptionally high tolls at the GWB and other bridges/tunnels that were enacted over the past few years to fund transit improvements as impeding interstate commerce. Don’t think that those would be successful either, since the money is going to fund rebuilding at WTC (including PATH), the renovations at the GWB (rebuilding the deck and stringers), raising the Bayonne Bridge and replacing the Goethals, plus airport improvements.
