Bridgeghazi: Christie Says He Was Misled, Didn’t Know, Unacceptable

New Jersey-style
Politics • Views: 18,168

The latest moves in the burgeoning Bridgeghazi scandal are pretty predictable, as Gov. Chris Christie responds in classic politician’s fashion by blaming someone else.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has acknowledged that the New Jersey bridge closing scandal has reached his office.

In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Christie responded to the revelation that one of his close aides discussed plans to close lanes on the George Washington Bridge last year.

“What I’ve seen today for the first time is unacceptable,” Christie said. “I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge.”

Mmkay. We shall see. Meanwhile, Christie’s (former?) pal David Wildstein is trying to get his subpoena quashed. And we all know how painful that can be.

David Wildstein, the former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive at the center of New Jersey bridge scandal, does not want to testify before state lawmakers on Thursday. And he’s going to court to avoid it.

Wildstein filed a lawsuit in state court on Wednesday in an attempt to quash the legislature’s subpoena of his testimony, according to The Bergen Record.

Yeah, he seems to be stuck in a lose-lose situation here. If he disavows all knowledge, he looks incompetent; if he admits he knew about it, he torpedoes any plausible deniability and opens himself to liability.

It wasn’t that big a deal when the media thought the whole thing began and ended at the Port Authority, where he wanted them to think it began and ended. Now? Now it’s a big deal, so big in fact that he’s saddened and outraged…but not enough to fire anybody over it.

Christie only ever had as a possible path a unification of what passes for moderate GOP primary voters. He could blow the fucking bridge up entirely and it still wouldn’t make him more than tepidly palatable to the truly far right. He’s got too many examples of being vaguely sane and rational. Those won’t go away; he has a much tougher path than Romney did.

Christie’s now going to throw Kelly and perhaps Samson under the bus to maintain credibility.

At least that’s what he should do. Fire them.

What will he do? Probably get them to resign. It’s semantics with a twist.

The people who are trying to claim that this is much ado about nothing seem to ignore a couple of very important details.

This isn’t just any bridge or any road.

It’s the most heavily traveled bridge in the US and handles more than 50 million vehicles Eastbound annually (similar amount Westbound, but not tolled).

It’s a multi-billion dollar piece of infrastructure where any lane closure is big news and affects millions of commuters and truckers throughout the NYC metro region - from Boston to DC. Any kind of backup or delay can have serious ramifications.

The action by Christie’s people led to massive public safety hazards for Fort Lee. Four EMS calls were significantly delayed, with one woman dying. Yeah, that’s pretty significant for a political vendetta.

It goes to Christie’s judgment about the people who work for him. If he doesn’t fire them, then his statement today is meaningless.

And as kirkspencer, justaminute and I had noted down below, Wildstein’s efforts to quash the subpoena should go nowhere because the legislature has every right and power to bring him before the legislature to answer for his actions.

It would seem to go to the fact that those involved knew that this couldn’t or shouldn’t go through official channels because everything would be logged, recorded and maintained under public records requirements.

They thought they’d avoid the scrutiny by using private email accounts.

They ignore that as public officials that subpoenas and FOIAs would enable access to private emails, phone logs, texts, and claw back who spoke to whom, what was said, who else was in the loop, and whether anyone involved tried to cover their tracks further with deletions.

In addition to the lane closures that crippled Fort Lee, Sokolich was himself personally attacked by members of Christie’s team. Port Authority official David Wildstein apparently referred to Sokolich as “this little Serbian” when emailing Christie two-time campaign manager Bill Stepien.

“I’m Croatian, Wolf,” Sokolich clarified to CNN

Obama edges closer to decisions on intelligence reforms

reuters.com

“Obama, who could announce his intelligence reforms in a speech as early as next week, is acting in an attempt to restore Americans’ confidence in U.S. intelligence services after damaging disclosures from former spy contractor Edward Snowden about the sweep of surveillance practices.

“Obama reviewed the progress of the administration’s review in a meeting with James Clapper, the director of U.S. intelligence, and Keith Alexander, the National Security Agency director, as well as Attorney General Eric Holder and Vice President Joe Biden.

“This was an important chance for the president to hear directly from his team as he begins to make final decisions about how we move forward with key intelligence collection programs,” said Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council.”

Two things the dudebros won’t like at all: Who Pres Obama has already met with, and Reuters calling Snowden a “former spy contractor”.

The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, a bipartisan independent panel, says its findings won’t be ready until as late as early Feb, too late to be considered in Pres Obama’s reform plans.

Why do small business people really get pissed at silly regulations? Usually it closes out market opportunities or adds severe costs. If you guys will forgive a little “inside baseball”.

Small biz in this case is US makers of white gold jewelry. Nickel is the metal to change the color. The EU passed some regulations limiting the nickel emission onto the skin from white gold rings etc, and a stricter rule for ear posts and body piercing jewelry. That’s because some people are allergic to nickel and can get a rash, sometimes severe. So far so good. With some effort the trade worked up alloys that comply. Since 2011 the magic number for compliance was cut more than 80%. Now it’s really hard to comply. It almost makes white gold impractical.

What gets me is the EU is perfectly content to allow the sales of foods with nut content or shellfish content. Those allergies are sometimes fatal. of course they have labeling rules for safety, and that’s great, glad to see that.

But why is labeling not enough for jewelry and the risk of a rash? BTW the EU is a ripe territory for US makers of jewelry. It’s the kind of market that recoveries build upon.

Okay trying the new feature

It works!

I just can’t see Christie getting the GOP nod. The Tea Party type hate him with a passion, and they are going to be active in the primaries. Main Stream Moderate GOPers are going to watch him blow up the first time he gets challenged, won’t be attracted.

I think both parties are going to have interesting primary seasons.

If Hilary Clinton runs, no one is going to challenge her. Democrats want to keep the White House and a contentious primary would be foolish. The Republican primary is going to be fun.

It doesn’t matter what Christie does or says, I imagine he would be running on the Mitt Romney platform laid out for him in the last election.

That platform says that you can say anything you want to whoever is listening to you at the time. If people complain about it later you have an aide “retract” your previous statement but don’t ever correct it or apologize for it yourself.

That way you can lie and lie and lie and appear to everything to everyone simultaneously. Even though some of the media will eventually find the guts to call you a liar you will still take home at least 47% of the vote at the end of election day (even if you are a Mormon and have no/negligible charisma, Christie can probably do better).

Welcome to the idiocracy. :(

WTF? AFAIK, Unemployment Insurance pays a fraction of what your last job paid. Most folks who collect it would DEARLY LOVE to have a job.

Each state has different rules. New Hampshire, for example, has a maximum weekly benefit rate of $427 per week. To qualify for that amount, you’d have to earn $41,500 per year. Per capita income was somewhat lower than that; if you earned an average amount of $33,000 per year, you’d qualify for $331 weekly in benefits. You’ll get less if you earned less; earning below minimum threshold requirement and you might not get anything at all.

In a factoid that will surprise absolutely no one, Massachusetts offers the highest potential weekly benefit at $653, while Mississippi’s highest weekly benefit is the lowest in the country at $235.

They’re pretending that it either doesn’t exist, it’s not that important, or they’re saying that the “liberal media” is doing this to help HRC in 2016. re: #64 lawhawk

I wanted to re-iterate this significant point you made: people often DIE in bad traffic. This kind of tantrum-throwing isn’t just embarassing and inconvenient: it’s deadly. It goes directly to Christie’s judgment that he even hired toddlers this immature and untrustworthy to begin with, if he’s trying to tell us that he didn’t order this closure himself.

Either way, he’s made it pointedly clear that he is not a responsible adult and cannot be trusted to run anything. I think when we’re done with this asshole, he’ll be lucky to find a job running a fucking deep fryer.
