Tech Note: New Feature: Drag and Drop Uploading

Drag, then drop
LGF • Views: 20,053

We have a cool new feature for registered users tonight — uploading images to your Image Library is now easier than ever. In the comment section, you can now upload an image simply by dragging and dropping it on the “Upload Image” button.

The feature is backward-compatible; if you click the “Upload Image” button, you still get the old-fashioned file selector, in case you’re stuck using a caveman browser that doesn’t understand the Javascript FileReader API.

It’s a drag and drop world now, baby.

UPDATE at 1/9/14 5:59:39 pm

Drag and drop image uploading is now enabled in the LGF Pages posting window, in the popup editing windows for Pages and articles, and in the LGF Spy.

(Note that you can also drag and drop images into the text editing box, just to give us all a bigger target.)

That’s when my momma said…

She said my boy I think someday
You’ll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay!
You’ll be a dentist!

You have a talent for causing things pain
Son, be a dentist!
People will pay you to be inhumane
Your temperament’s wrong for the priesthood

Bridge Closures Led To Emergency Response Delays, Disrupted Treatment For 91-Year-Old Woman Who Died

Paul Favia, an EMS coordinator for the Borough of Fort Lee, told the paper that emergency response times had doubled in at least two of the incidents in question, with ambulances hampered by abnormally heavy traffic caused by the bridge closures ordered by those within Christie’s administration. Favia made a point not to directly blame the traffic on the elderly woman’s death, but did say that first responders were forced to meet the ambulance en route to the hospital instead of getting treatment at the scene.

On Wednesday afternoon, Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich stopped short of calling the action criminal, but said that the ploy intentionally put his residents’ safety in jeopardy.

“You have intentionally put people in harm’s way,” he told CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer in an interview earlier in the day. “You knew that when Fort Lee called 20, 30, 40 times. You knew that when I kept sending text after text and calling cell phone after cell phone.”

Florida police department unveils new MRAP armored vehicle (VIDEO)

The Fort Pierce Police Department unveiled their newly acquired mine-resistant ambush protection armored vehicle.

The 61,700-pound, six-wheeled battle wagon is a rolling fortress and is meant to give the SWAT team protection during high-risk situations. Though it’s worth nearly $700,000, the Fort Pierce PD purchased the like-new vehicle from the Department of Defense for only $2,000, New York Daily News reports.

“If you see my SWAT team roll up in this, it’s over, so just give up,” said Police Chief Sam Baldwin.

A very close friend I have made here in Oklahoma has a bit of personal history.

She is the daughter of a landlord, and moved from Pakistan. Because of the state of that country, she knows how to use a gun. However, her family sees no need for one here. It’s safer.

This pushed me even farther to the left. Why do these right wing idiots need their damn AR-15s? At this point, I think they are compensating for being little men.

Also, now over half of my friends are Pakistani.

Ayep. The general opinion is that Christie is not sufficiently dedicated to the revolution and so anything that removes him as a major contender next year is good. Of course, what they fail to realize that Christie was their best chance at the White House in ‘16. Without him running, it’s going to be a contest to see who can out-wingnut the rest of the pack.

67 Targetpractice  Thu, Jan 9, 2014 4:51:26am

Thing is that, for Christie, shit got real yesterday when the story about the 91 year old woman came out. Inconvenienced motorists is one thing, something that looks bad but can ultimately be smoothed over. But a woman who may be dead because of those traffic snarls? That carries criminal liability, something that will see somebody go to jail if it can be proven.

Best case scenario for Christie right now is he truly was caught completely unawares of what was happening, but that just doesn’t sound plausible for a former prosecutor who takes pride in being a “no-bullshit” kinda guy. So that leaves only two other conclusions, that he personally ordered the “traffic study,” or that he knew the who thing had been political months ago and did nothing. Both scenarios leave only one real choice for Christie: resignation. They also mean he can kiss his presidential ambitions goodbye.

68 Rev_Arthur_Belling  Thu, Jan 9, 2014 5:03:43am

What a cesspool of an office Christie must run. Wonder how many other ratfvcking operations they’ve run. And, yeah, he probably has “plausible deniability,” unless he records everything that goes on in his office, like Nixon.

It probably won’t happen, but I hope someone on that staff rolls on him.

So, I see Dark down-dinged me for the Christie headlines image in #1. What? Maybe he doesn’t get the double entendre in the headline? Maybe he thought it was all a fat joke? I like to use the obvious to hide the real.

I meant that people who haven’t been watching and got caught up in the popularity of the great governor missed his propensity for being a dick. Now everyone is seeing his “dick” even if he doesn’t (see that he can be a dick). Dick which can be a word for a person that is mean and vindictive. The fact that there is also the obvious meaning is what I think makes it work.

I like humor that rides a fine line and can be uncomfortable. There will be more. I also understand not all will get it.

Anyway…at least the cold-grip on the USA seems to be lessening. I’m all ready for a nice long January thaw. Hopefully it will lead into February and break the back of this winter.

I see it as being only a matter of time. What ultimately brought Nixon down wasn’t the recordings, it was what wasn’t in the recordings, the missing minutes of tape that left people filling in the blanks as they saw fit. Right now, there’s a huge blank in the Christie record, and that’s the time between the first accusations of political impropriety and yesterday. He says he’s been totally in the dark, but I don’t think anybody takes that seriously. If they do, then the only plausible conclusion to draw then is the man is not as dedicated to the people of New Jersey as he portrayed himself in his reelection campaign.

I agree with your comments about smart phones. I just got one because I am starting to go into freelance work and will be driving around a lot and that presents some issues in this new communication world. There are very few land line phones available at stores, gas stations and phone booths in parking lots like there used to be. TPM has one written up already. Christie spent most of last month, when he wasn’t belittling the media for investigating it, dodging the issue. And he declared when Baroni resigned that it was something he’d “planned,” that a “mistake” was made and the traffic study hadn’t been done “correctly.”

Personally, the way he’s handled things to date make it seem more and more likely that he knew something was up. That he didn’t investigate the matter deeper than asking those involved and accepting their story at face value just does not pass the sniff test.

Enjoy the lower cost of living there. I relocated from DC area (Alexandria) to east of Pittsburgh back in 1989 and noticed a big drop is spending on food, rent, etc. And I like that area more than DC anyways.

Yup-yup.

My rent is now like a third of what it was last month. ;)

As for liking the area, well, I grew up here, and now live about a mile from my sister and her family, and only minutes from my mom/stepdad, dad/stepmom…

So, yeah.

Just need some editing/writing work, and it’s all golden.

So yeah, Christie cancels his one public appearance yesterday and goes into seclusion, releases a statement hours after the emails drop, and now calls a press conference the next day. What you wanna bet he reads a statement reiterating how “saddened” and “outraged” he is, announces that those named in the emails not already gone are fired, and then beats a hasty retreat?

Do you really think he’s going to fire Samson? : )

re: #92 Feline Fearless Leader

I expect he’ll double-down on the Reagan’s Bind decision to be viewed as incompetent rather than malicious.

The question becomes how much this starts to damage the view by many in NJ that he is a decent to good governor. (Remember folks, he is following Corzine - so the bar is pretty low.)

Honestly, there’s a good chance he comes out of this okay. I haven’t talked to any friends or relatives about this (most of them voted for Chrisite). Between them not really caring that much about politics and this happening in North Jersey, they’ll probably go “Eh. Good enough” if he offers even the most half-assed of apologies.

I’m honestly not sure what he’s going to do. Bullies rarely apologize when caught, and yesterday was no exception. It all depends on badly he wants to be president.

The shitty long term memory of the American voter is Christie’s greatest hope now.

But it’s the Daily News, you know.

The Sokolich quotes were getting heavy play on NYC news radio last night, and they gave special emphasis to the delayed EMS calls.

Whatever Christie does in response to this whole thing, he’s taken a massive hit PR-wise. The story that a woman may have died as a result of this is going to shock even those who would dismiss it as ‘just politics’ into listening.

Did Wildstein get out of testifying? There’s got to be a reason he wants to avoid it so badly, and I think I know what it is.

You never know. I have a sister who’s a teacher. I told my dad and others straight out that voting for Christie, with his “Fuck teachers” venom*, is basically telling her, “I will vote for a guy who will make her ability to earn a decent living much harder.” Guess who they voted for?

One of the bigger things for me is that Christie’s whole “This is not business as usual any more” act was just that: an act. He’s willing to hire people who endanger, and possibly end, people’s lives to prove a point.

To the best of my knowledge Corzine’s people never contributed almost directly to the death of a 91 year old woman.

But then again, maybe I’m being a nitpicky liberal.

*As I’ve said before: most people don’t go “Oh Christie’s not mad at teachers, he dislikes the unions.” Bullshit. People hear that and think teachers are driving to their multiple vacation homes staffed with gold-plated robotic butlers.

Way I see it, only way this costs Christie his office is if more evidence comes out that directly implicates him, including known members of the conspiracy cutting a deal to avoid real jail time. re: #116 Feline Fearless Leader

I’m not surprised with NYC papers reacting like this. That stunt mucked with a major bridge into the city.

Traffic is a huge deal in NYC. Lane closures on major highways is a huge deal. The GWB sees more traffic than any other bridge in the nation (and most vehicle traffic in the world). Any kind of lane closure, even from the local roads in Fort Lee can have a ripple effect that causes major problems.

While most traffic to the GWB from NJ comes from the Turnpike (I-80/95), additional traffic comes from Rt 46 and Rt 4. But those are primarily E/W connectors once you get into the Fort Lee vicinity.

Drivers from the North will primarily come via the Palisades Parkway, but anyone coming from Fort Lee or points directly South, like Edgewater, North Bergen, or West New York, would take local streets to get to the bridge. The main route would be Lemoine or Palisades Ave for those drivers who would then get on near Park Ave.

Any kind of lane closure would affect all those communities as well, forcing drivers onto secondary and tertiary roads to try and avoid the mess, and the result is gridlock when no one can get through.

Google map of local roads in GWB vicinity.

Doubt that this costs Christie his office. He’ll fire staffers and clean house, all while claiming that he didn’t know, and that he was misled by officials. Questions will reasonably be asked what kind of house he was running if his officials could pull stunts like this. It will bring far more scrutiny on his political operations than he would like/care to admit, but it will be necessary considering what we’ve learned to date.

I wouldn’t completely dispel his presidential chances. But he’d have to clean house to have a shot of clearing this mess in short order, opening up his office to investigation by either the state AG or federal prosecutors to go after Kelly and others involved. His potential opponents in 2016 will be taking notes on this scandal to be sure.

Kelly was one of Christie’s top advisers who was around Christie on a daily basis.

If he doesn’t fire Kelly or bring in outside prosecutors, people will assume there’s more being shielded from public view, and could infer that Christie was in the loop as well in some form.

Thing about opening up his office to investigation and taking any level of responsibility is that’s just not Christie, at least as we’ve seen him to date. The man does not take responsibility, he throws it on others and then berates them for smelling like dog shit. He used state troopers to remove a man from his presence who asked a question he didn’t like, he bellows and rants at reporters who he thinks ask stupid questions, and he basically acts like as much of a bully as he can. To admit he was wrong and open his office to investigation would dispel that myth he’s built around himself.

Mayfield faced seven felony charges — one charge of possession of methamphetamine, five charges for possession of stolen goods and one charge of obtaining property under false pretense, all stemming from a Nov. 1, 2011 search of his home. The charges carried more than 20 years in prison.”

And I have a feeling all of that will still not be enough.

One of the things I think will be at work here is it might signal an opportunity for some “liberal/independent” media payback.

We’ve had 5 years of Fox and all the “conservative” media banging on Obama for all kinds of trumped up scandals. I think the other side of the media is licking its lips to chop down on some conservatives as a payback. The fact there might be some real meat in this Christie scandal presents a fine opportunity for just that. Yesterday was the kickoff. Today, with Christie press conference, we get the game plan and then offense and defense of the two sides of the media get into the full game.

Am I looking forward to it? Maybe to a degree, but I also know I am not the biggest fan of any of our media. If they can stick to facts and do real journalism, then fine. However…

It certainly is plausible that Christie called Cuomo to get Foye to back off, but if this was a private phone call, who’d be the source that Christie was asking Cuomo to get Foye to back off? Were third parties in the room or on conference call? The call was private, so that would discount a conference call.

Did Cuomo speak to someone else, who then became the source? Was it Christie who spoke to someone on his side who became the source? “Someone familiar with the issue” sounds like one of Cuomo’s top staffers, or even Cuomo himself, but Cuomo wouldn’t want to insert himself into the story like that, so it’s much more likely that it was one of his top staffers who leaked this bit.

I’m no fan of the unnamed source for this tidbit.

Once Foye became aware of the lane closures, he got the change lifted within hours. Then the pressure was to figure out how the lane closures happened without going through normal channels, including alerts to local law enforcement and political leaders.

If anything, this highlights just how the Port Authority operates as a political fiefdom for both governors, and that they put political appointees into cushy jobs with significant benefits and compensation to oversee the bistate agency. Lots of room for corruption and graft and political infighting.

This is the first I’ve seen this quote. Kinda shifts the light a little.

That makes it sound like Christie knew what was going on and was trying to call off the inevitable.

That’s why I think Christie knew exactly what was going on and talked to Samson about it, as I expressed on an earlier thread.

He’s not named, but a phone call was arranged between Samson and that “someone” setting things in motion. Then, we saw the exultant emails between Wildstein and Kelly, from him, “Got it” and her response, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.”

I expect he’ll double-down on the Reagan’s Bind decision to be viewed as incompetent rather than malicious.

The question becomes how much this starts to damage the view by many in NJ that he is a decent to good governor. (Remember folks, he is following Corzine - so the bar is pretty low.)

Actually, though, I think Christie would get more mileage out of being seen as malicious. People these days would be more likely to accept and vote for ‘evil, but highly competent’ than ‘incompetent’ or a phony.

My approach to political scandals is pretty straight forward.

I strip away the political affiliations and treat each one for what it is - a scandal that either stands or falls on its own merits.

The IRS, Benghazi, and other nontroversies fall because there’s nothing there. Debunked, disproven, and nothing in evidence that suggests a scandal. The IRS mess can be solved by Congress clarifying existing law and getting the IRS out of determining what is political action or not for purposes of tax benefits, but they wont do so. Congress will perpetuate the mess instead.

The focus on Benghazi is obscene given how the State Department requested security funds, but Congress refused. The security wasn’t what it needed to be as a result, and the Ambassador was caught at the wrong place at the wrong time with the others who were killed. Of course, there are now revelations that a former Gitmo detainee who had AQ links was involved in the attacks, so some of the claims by the Administration in the days following the attack ring true - that there was a terror attack, that AQ may have been involved, and that that infernal movie may have inflamed passions.

The GWBVendetta is a scandal, regardless of how you slice and dice it. It’s an abuse of power by those who initiated the move, and it affects interstate commerce and economic activity around the bridge. It affected public safety.

And the demands for more information and a full accounting of who was responsible would be the same if it was Cuomo’s officials who gave the order just as surely as if it was Christie’s officials. It’s a bistate agency where both governors get their say on official business. That the Christie officials used private emails shows that they knew this would not go over well if it were made public. They knew they were up to no good. And it will mean a reshuffling of jobs in Trenton and at the Port Authority (where both need a house-cleaning IMO).

Point taken about the blind quote - but I think we’ll be getting anonymous background on this entire debacle over the coming days.

I would guess it’s someone out of Cuomo’s office, or maybe Foye’s office. Christie has surrounded nimself with loyalists, and I don’t think anyone there would be raising this point to a WSJ reporter.

Wildstein’s busy trying to quash the subpoena to testify before the NJ Legislature (here’s hoping he gets slapped down, because watching him take the 5th repeatedly will be so much fun).

Federal District Attorney in Newark has opened an investigation into the action, which gives them lots of room to peer into Christie’s political operations and those at the Port Authority.

Christie will be giving a presser in short order.

The fallout at the Port Authority may slow down further action at the WTC, bridges and tunnels as contracts and other projects that need to be contracted for may be slowed due to top NJ appointees having to be replaced, brought up to speed, etc., and that will have additional costs to commuters as well in the long run.

In his defense, he said that Kelly and others lied about their knowledge and involvement. It was the FOIA by the Record that revealed the connections.

It shouldn’t have taken the FOIA to make that happen. An investigation internally should have been conducted from the outset.

I note that he says he had no part in the planning or execution, nothing about the fallout. I find it hard as hell to believe that he went months without trying to get the whole truth. If he did, then he’s incompetent in the extreme.

Now, his staffers went “off the reservation” to go and engage in a vendetta against the Fort Lee mayor? Because they felt they had the authority to do this on their own? Because it would be approved by the Governor?

Sheesh.

He delegates tremendous authority to his staff, which goes against the image of his being a micromanager.

Sounds like Christie is falling into the usual trap of thinking half-measures will cause things to die down and then business as usual will proceed. Instead there will always be something out to tease out and continue to talk about in the media as the extent of the cover-up is investigated. He would have been better off doing a full housecleaning of both his staff and the Port Authority appointees now. (Of course, it could be that doing so would have led to them turning on him with something making it clear he was in the know and complicit all along - in which case he is probably doomed in any case.)

The thing is that Nixon had done nothing wrong in 1952 and the ‘Checkers Speech’ reflected that. If it was sharp-tongued, that was because Eisenhower wasn’t really supporting Nixon in the matter and Nixon felt he was being wrongly accused.

What investigation to date? This isn’t the result of an investigation with subpoena and other powers, it’s the result of some media types deciding things were hinky and getting FOIA and such exposure of the obvious trail.

Even if they don’t find anything there’s the problem of the people already thrown under a bus. A friend once noted that people thrown under a bus will do everything they can to move the bus on top of someone else. Near as I can tell the current tossing is panic, not intended sacrifice. That means there’s at least one witness ready to sing. Which with the paper present is enough to drag someone else under the bus. Repeat till you’ve got a solid chain to someone who’s left trying to show how witness testimony with little paperwork is still enough.

And we’ve been doing it for a lot of years.

I linked to this earlier, but all this insistence that he doesn’t know the mayor is crap:

Chris Christie claims 3 lanes off George Washington Bridge are dedicated to Fort Lee

“The fact that one town has three lanes dedicated to it, that kind of gets me sauced,” Christie said Dec. 2 in response to Democratic lawmakers subpoenaing the director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey — which operates the bridge — to appear before a state Assembly committee about the lane closures from Sept. 9-13. The closures caused massive traffic jams in Fort Lee, leaving some drivers stranded for hours.

So, if it wasn’t the mayor, why was Christie so “sauced” about Fort Lee’s lanes?

505 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 9, 2014 9:31:35am

Boehner says that Christie’s still a presidential contender, which says as much about the awful GOP field as it does Christie’s actual chances. When you’re throwing nothing but extremists up there, Christie’s still looking like a moderate (but still extreme).

Weirdly, Erick Erickson thinks this won’t be much of a problem if dealt with properly. Unfortunately, he doesn’t really say how, other than firing people and doing it “quickly”.

First, it actually is pretty brilliant that Christie came out using Barack Obama’s standard excuse of not knowing and being misled. That’s well played.

Second, this is such an easy fix. Christie can turn it around quickly. He needs to follow through and see that heads roll. Then he can point out that he has actually fired people, unlike President Obama.

This may be the rough and tumble of New Jersey politics, but it also comports to stereotypes of Christie as a bully and of New Jersey politics being seedy and corrupt. Taking charge and cleaning up could help Chris Christie quickly.

It isn’t rocket science. It is also a story that can go away quickly if Christie acts quickly.

His readers seem to disagree.

Christie also gets very little support on FR. The general comments run to: “See? Christie is really a liberal. We can tell because he is corrupt.”

My boss just asked me if I remember what sized box I dropped off at FedEx on 20 DEC 13. I’m not kidding.

Sure did. And I think I commented about it on LGF too. Each and every one should be prosecuted to full extent and restitution made.

US Attorney was able to make case against most because of social media like Twitter or Facebook or Instagram showing the indicted engaging in activities that would not be possible if they were truly disabled.

No matter the event or organization, someone will try to scam the system to their own benefit.

Lawyer now talking about the redactions - redacted due to being outside date of subpoena, or outside scope of subpoena.

Well, guess we’ll have another round of subpoenas to address a wider range (namely earlier than initially requested), and try to figure out the scope to bring those in.

And the lawyer inevitably challenging those as well in court on the grounds that he doesn’t see the subpoenas as valid.

Wildstein does understand that if this gets taken up by the Feds, Christie can’t protect him, right?

629 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 9, 2014 10:35:55am

re: #628 Targetpractice

Wildstein already knows he’s exposed. That’s what the 5th is for; it’s now leverage for use with the US District Attorney in exchange for relief from potential criminality - to turn on Kelly, Samson, Baroni, or any others in the Port Authority or Christie’s Administration.

Bullying his way into Ft. Lee, of course.

Keep him waiting and use the excuse he’s working for the people of Ft. Lee and doesn’t have time to listen to an apology.

That was my impression as well, he’s angling towards a deal now that he knows his ass is cooked.

No, he can’t. He has to take the 5th for all questions or risk being cited for contempt of the legislature.

Facepalm. No difference eh?

Let’s just ignore that Speaker Boehner blew up a handshake deal on the budget to demand ACA repeal. That’s all on the GOP. Obama had nothing to do with the shutdown.

Nice try though.

Latest questions are going after Samson references, directly going after Gov. Christie’s statements at the presser, where he said that Samson wasn’t involved.

5th asserted again on those.

re: #607 ObserverArt

Decatur Deb, if you are still around. Do you have any links or info that goes to the 9 million ACA enrollments? And, would they also mention how many have actually purchased a plan to date. Maybe there is a site somewhere keeping a tab on these counts.

This LA Times article discusses the numbers and points to a blogger who is doing the best daily/weekly watch available. HHS numbers are still coming out around mid-months.

Same with the Stepian references.

Once everyone’s asked questions, they’ll go and address Wildstein’s refusals. Expect lots more 5th Amendment assertions.

US Attorney Paul Fishman now investigating #GWBVendetta .

Fox host on Christie: ‘Bridge thing’ ruining coverage of Bob Gates’ Obama-bashing

… the Gates story was moved to the back burner on Wednesday, when emails emerged suggesting Christie’s office ordered George Washington Bridge as lane closures last year political retribution against Democratic Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich and most of the media — with the exception of Fox News — focused on the scandal.

“Imagine the commander and chief claiming he supports you, but not your mission,” Fox News host Elisabeth Hasselbeck charged on Thursday. “To hear any of that coming forward in this book is just shocking!”

“Yeah,” Doocy agreed. “And I was watching one news channel yesterday, you would think that this would be a big story… all about the bridge thing… with Christie.”

After a segment asserting that extending unemployment benefits hurt people who don’t have jobs, the network turned to Heather Nauert, who read a 37-second update on the Christie story — and then the network quickly returned for another interview to find out what veterans thought about Obama’s mistrust of the military.
