Texas GOP Education Board Candidate: “We Know We Didn’t Come From Monkeys!”

And mah granddaddy didn’t come from no monkey neither!
Wingnuts • Views: 16,805

Ah, Texas. You almost have to hand it to the Texas branch of the GOP. They’re consistently dedicated to making themselves look like jackasses to the rest of the world, with an amazing lack of self-consciousness or inhibition. It’s really the only way they’re uninhibited at all.

There are great people in Texas, of course, and I’m not bashing everyone in the state, but where else can you find a Republican candidate for the freaking State Board of Education saying things like this: “We know we didn’t come from monkeys!

Lady Theresa Thombs, self-described on her Twitter page as an “international evangelist” and real estate agent, saved worse scorn for Tea Party challenger Eric Mahroum.

First, she said Mahroum once fell behind on child support. The Tea Party-like Fort Worth 912 Project crowd booed her.

Then, calling him “inexperienced,” she said in an accusatory tone, “His real experience in management is — Chuck E. Cheese!”

When Mahroum spoke, he said he worked out the child support. He replied, “I was a Chuck E. Cheese regional trainer!”

Thombs had said she wanted history lessons written by “experts, not people from some socialist higher education.”

She went on: “We know we didn’t come from monkeys!”

TFN Insider posted this video of the candidates’ opening statements — Lady Theresa is the last one to speak.

I occasionally wonder how much of the “I AIN’T COME FROM NO MONKEY, PA” mindworm comes from a conflation with the usual racist undertones of monkey-centric discussions with that crowd.

More than zero, right?

43 Weet  Thu, Jan 9, 2014 4:19:44pm

Found this Bridgeghazi comment on DKos. Sounds plausible.

The claim it’s about endorsement is bxllshxt. It’s about money.

Fort Lee is one of the cities and towns fighting Christie about state schools and state property. Republicans are looters, always.

Fort Lee is one of the battlegrounds.

The big thefts underway include, literally, stealing schools. Special Ed schools are run by the State of New Jersey on state land. Christie has moved large numbers of Special Ed students over to much more expensive privatized schools. He’s trying to steal the land and sell it to his buddies.

Privatization doubles the cost per student, which falls on local school boards and their taxpayers. Consider the Special Ed facility known as Secaucus Regional School. This operation when it ran at or near capacity cost $43,000 a student for severely disabled students. These are kids who require one aide per student, plus the normal classroom teacher and school overhead.

Privatized schools cost more than $90,000 per student to provide similar environments.

Local officials have no control over what State of New Jersey does with these schools. Obviously there’s a buck to made here.

$43,000 vs. $90,000 is sweet for the crooks.

Christie whined about his school taxes — since he sends his own kids to private schools, public school money is so much theft for him.

So now the Secaucus Regional School is down to a handful of students. School boards seeking to place disabled students there are turned away by a political-hack Administrator. Fort Lee has a similar situation and there’s way more money involved. Attacking Fort Lee is intimidation, rooted in money.

Typical with a Republican thug governor.

Life

I believe that life begins at conception and that all human beings, regardless of their state of mental and physical development, are given the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness by their Creator.

Tenth Amendment

I fully believe in the Tenth Amendment. I believe that the states are sovereign, and that government functions best at the local level, with direction from the voters. Proper respect for the Tenth Amendment is critical to the preservation of our civil liberties.

Second Amendment

The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights gives us the right to bear arms, and as citizens, we should be able to protect ourselves, our families, and our property. Law enforcement is not always accessible when needed, and I believe that bearing arms can serve as an impediment to criminal activity.

Nothing surprising there.

Gates: U.S. Tried to Oust Karzai in ‘Clumsy Putsch’

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has long accused the Obama administration of trying to secretly force him out of power. Turns out he may be right.

Lost in the political controversy surrounding former Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ new memoir is a fascinating account of a failed administration attempt to ensure that Karzai was defeated in the 2009 Afghan elections. Gates is harshly critical of the move, which he derides as a “clumsy and failed putsch” that did significant damage to the U.S.-Afghan relationship.

Same here. I has a couple of Seagates crap out on me, so now I rarely use anything but WD.

The only thing I keep on my C: drive is the OS. I keep everything else on two separate 7200RPM internal drives (both getting updated to 1TB SATA 3), and then back up to external drives.

I also got one of those hard drive docks where you can just stick the drive in an move stuff. Seems really convenient, especially now that my new MB will have USB 3.0 ports.

I’m excited to be upgrading my system, but I hate doing hardware updates. I always end up all scratched up, itchy from the dust, and aggravated by my inevitable screw-ups.

re: #84 CuriousLurker

It doesn’t help that the cats want to supervise: “Ooooh, look at all those squiggly wires and shiny screws! Here, let me help you…”

When you get a bit of extra money, you might want to put your OS on an SSD.

The HDD dock I have is one of my most used tools. It uses eSATA rather than USB so it’s quite fast. I would like one that uses eSATA 3.

It isn’t as user friendly as Easeus and it has to be booted from CD/USB drive.

Marsellus: The night of the fight, you may feel a slight sting. That’s pride fucking with you. Fuck pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps
.

Once you are unencumbered by the thought process, and your world view is shaped and filtered by the contents of only a single book, then it’s easy. Ya take a dive in Genesis, and collect your money.

RBS

It’s actually worse than that, since one has to interpret Genesis in particularly stupid ways to arrive at creationism.

I tend to think creationism is one of several not-so-secret handshakes in use these days that cranks use to facilitate banding together to get more political clout.

These are the most arrogant people in the entire nation. Forget about atheist nanny state liberals who want better MPG, smaller soda cups and “militant” recycling.

The likes of Lady Whatever claim the ultimate authority: God is in MY corner, so do what I think He says or else you’re all gonna get it.

She’s claiming that her particular religious beliefs are the only path to fixing America’s problems, and that the “unsaved” are going to hell. Pretty fucking arrogant.

By contrast, liberals just think conservatives are dumb, selfish and have ridiculous policy ideas. Today’s American conservative is more likely to see this as a simplistic apocalyptic battle of good vs. evil, in which their side must prevail over all of us who are going to hell. See Erickson, Fischer, her Highness from Texas, et al.

One of our political parties has turned into a Church, and a predominantly Southern Baptist evangelical one at that. Not a positive development in a two-party democracy.

I want to elaborate on my 198.

As others have mentioned, creationists are science-deniers, so rejecting AGW, the connection between HIV and AIDS, and a host of other issues is just a short hop for them.

Religion also plays a big part, because fundamentalists believe (1) in the Second Coming and (2) God’s care. As for number 1, the fervent belief that the righteous will be called up into Heaven means they really don’t need to worry about the Future of Earth. It’s the same attitude that drives “drill, baby, drill!”, because draining the Earth of all its natural resources and creating a wasteland makes little difference to someone who believes he and his fellow believers won’t be here to deal with it. As for number 2, the belief is that God, who created us all, is not going to let us all die before the Second Coming. Also, he controls the weather, so he must have some plan in mind.

Their policies, beliefs and attitudes are rooted in this kind of religious indoctrination. Reasoning with them is fruitless, even from a theological angle, because they know they are right. God is on their side, and the rest of us can just go f**k off. pray to God for enlightenment.

I doubt Lady Creationist will accept:

An unbiased resource of novel SNP markers provides a new chronology for the human Y chromosome and reveals a deep phylogenetic structure in Africa

The phylogeography of the paternally-inherited MSY has been the subject of intense research. However, sequence diversity and the ages of the deepest nodes of the phylogeny remain largely unexplored due to the severely biased collection of SNPs available for study. We characterized 68 worldwide Y chromosomes by high-coverage next generation sequencing, including 18 deep-rooting ones, and identified 2,386 SNPs, 80% of which were novel. Many aspects of this pool of variants resembled the pattern observed among genome-wide de novo events, suggesting that in the MSY a large proportion of newly arisen alleles have survived in the phylogeny. Some degree of purifying selection emerged in the form of an excess of private missense variants. Our MSY tree recapitulated the previously known topology, but the relative lengths of major branches were drastically modified and the associated node ages were remarkably older. We found significantly different branch lengths when comparing the rare deep-rooted A1b African lineage with the rest of the tree. Our dating results and phylogeography led to the following main conclusions: 1) patrilineal lineages with ages approaching those of early AMH fossils survive today only in central-western Africa; 2) only a few evolutionarily successful MSY lineages survived between 160 and 115 kya; 3) an early exit out of Africa (before 70 kya), which fits recent western Asian archaeological evidence, should be considered. Our experimental design produced an unbiased resource of new MSY markers informative for the initial formation of the anatomically modern human gene pool, i.e. a period of our evolution which had been previously considered to be poorly accessible with paternally-inherited markers.

More than three quarters of large carnivores now in decline

Three quarters of the world’s big carnivores - including lions, wolves and bears - are in decline, says a new study.

A majority now occupy less than half their former ranges according to data published in the journal, Science.

The loss of this habitat and prey and persecution by humans has created global hotspots of decline.

The researchers say the loss of these species could be extremely damaging for ecosystems the world over.

This is happening right now in West Virginia:

W.Va. Gov. Issues State of Emergency, Water Ban for 8 Counties after Leak

West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has issued a state of emergency for eight counties after a chemical leak in Kanawha County Thursday morning.

The state of emergency includes West Virginia American Water customers in Kanawha, Boone, Putnam, Lincoln, Logan, Clay, Roane and Jackson counties. Culloden in Cabell County is also under the advisory. No other Cabell County customers are effected.

West Virginia DHHR says symptoms include: severe burning in throat, severe eye irritation, non-stop vomiting, trouble breathing or severe skin irritation such as skin blistering.

According to a news release, the leak happened at Freedom Industries in Charleston. The leaked product is 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol, which is used in the froth flotation process of coal washing and preparation.

The chemical is believed to have leaked into the Elk River.

West Virginia American Water believes the material is hazardous, but is not lethal in it’s current form.

More on this little bit of socialist indoctrination:

Status and Ecological Effects of the World’s Largest Carnivores

Large carnivores face serious threats and are experiencing massive declines in their populations and geographic ranges around the world. We highlight how these threats have affected the conservation status and ecological functioning of the 31 largest mammalian carnivores on Earth. Consistent with theory, empirical studies increasingly show that large carnivores have substantial effects on the structure and function of diverse ecosystems. Significant cascading trophic interactions, mediated by their prey or sympatric mesopredators, arise when some of these carnivores are extirpated from or repatriated to ecosystems. Unexpected effects of trophic cascades on various taxa and processes include changes to bird, mammal, invertebrate, and herpetofauna abundance or richness; subsidies to scavengers; altered disease dynamics; carbon sequestration; modified stream morphology; and crop damage. Promoting tolerance and coexistence with large carnivores is a crucial societal challenge that will ultimately determine the fate of Earth’s largest carnivores and all that depends upon them, including humans.

Outlook

Current ecological knowledge indicates that large carnivores are necessary for the maintenanceof biodiversity and ecosystem function. Human actions cannot fully replace the role of largecarnivores. Additionally, the future of increasing human resource demands and changing climate willaffect biodiversity and ecosystem resiliency. These facts, combined with the importance of resilientecosystems, indicate that large carnivores and their habitats should be maintained and restored whereverpossible. Preventing the extinction of these species and the loss of their irreplaceable ecologicalfunction and importance will require novel, bold, and deliberate actions. We propose a Global LargeCarnivore Initiative to coordinate local, national, and international research, conservation, and policy.

Probably a UN plot to take away our God given rights to kill the critters.

In 2010, Christie dismisses the state supreme court’s only black judge. Never been done before under the state’s current constitution (although it’s within his rights).

Democrats in the Senate go ballistic and refuse to confirm Christie’s noms for that seat.

On August 12th of this year, Christie yanks one of his judges who’s up for a lifetime court seat, when it’s clear the Dems are going to rake her over the coals. Her husband is a member of Christie’s office.

On August 13th, Bridget Kelly says it’s time for traffic problems in Fort Lee.

Who represents Fort Lee in the 37th district in NJ? Loretta Weinberg, leader of the Senate Democrats.

Oh, for sure. It’s interesting to me, because it suggests my distant ancestors probably inhabited the British Isles long before the Romans, Angles, Saxons and Jutes came in to subjugate the natives. If you wanted, you could take something like a Y short tandem repeat test at FTDNA, and find other men with whom you share male ancestors.

You could also take the mtDNA full sequencing test, to see if you pick up others on your mothers’ deep ancestry. I’ve not done that, though someday I think it would be interesting.

There’s also the autosomal tests, which have a lot of YMMV postings about them.

For me, I’ve been working on the paper side, rationalizing my deep nordic ancestry. I think I finally decided that anybody with a birth year below 4 digits probably is too far back to be truly in the pedigree. ⚉

Even if he’s totally honest, that he had no idea the plot was happening, there still remains the possibility that he gave his staff the impression that this something he wanted to happen. If they acted off what they felt was an implied mission to fuck shit up in Fort Lee, then he bears responsibility for their actions.

I’m sure it’s completely commonplace for a state governor to have a staff that just run around pulling all sorts of shenanigans that they could reasonably expect would potentially attract a federal rectal probe. I mean, what, are governors supposed to be some sort of managers or something? They haven’t got time for that shit.

Think what continues to stick out today about Christie’s conference was that he repeatedly declared he’d fired Kelly because she’d lied to him about not being involved and so he couldn’t trust her, but he’s kept Samson on and implicitly trusts that he had nothing to do with the whole thing, despite being named more than once in the released emails as having a part in the whole affair.

re: #342 freetoken

I’d like to do the deep testing, but Oh! the cost! I did the preiminary mtDNA tests, putting that line in the U3 group. That’s apparently from eastern Europe. My earliest maternal line ancestor lived on Gotland, so her roots probably lie farther to the east.

Many people back in the days wanted to connect their families to nobility or royalty, so some genealogies get increasingly more fanciful the further back they go. Surnames in Europe really didn’t catch on until well after the 1300s, so making connections based only on given names is a fool’s game. Noble families, and literate families, would keep track of such matters, and some of those records have survived, leading the hopeful to make connections where none exist. Most of us probably came from illiterate ancestors, who could not have written down details about births, deaths and marriages. So, genealogies suggesting one is descended from Alfred the Great, or Alexander the Great, can probably be discounted.

Here’s Proof That Governor Christie Is Still Misleading The Public On Bridge Scandal

Yeah, that’s another one that left me shaking my head, this continued insistence that he has no idea if there even was a traffic study. This investigation hasn’t been happening in a vacuum, if he didn’t know before yesterday that no study had been undertaken, it’s because he chose not to investigate the matter.

383 Gus  Thu, Jan 9, 2014 7:11:54pm

I never saw a traffic study that involved closing lanes. Typically it’s either someone standing around doing a manual observation or the traffic counter tubes.

re: #378 wheat-dogghazi

So, genealogies suggesting one is descended from Alfred the Great, or Alexander the Great, can probably be discounted.

On the contrary - if you’re European you probably do have Great family - Alfred, Alexander, or Charles - in your pedigree. Male privilege brings reproductive opportunities (which is why we like male privilege in the first place.) We have a vast number of genealogical ancestors, though the way meiosis works the number of DNA ancestors we have are turns out to be logarithmically less.

As for surnames - many societies didn’t adopt them until the 19th century.

I wish more people did family history for the history. There is so much to learn, and some of it is really interesting.

That’s really what it looks like to them. They’ve been propagandized to believe that Benghazi was a scandal that should have destroyed a president that they’ve been programmed to hate. If you fall for that, Bridgeghazi is terribly insulting, and this traffic thing is just politics.

I really am enjoying the Bridgeghazi meme, and enjoying it more knowing it burns the panties right the fuck off of some wingnuts.

Mostly because I want the pivot point to inform them that this is what a real goddamn scandal looks like and if they’re having trouble understanding why nobody gives a damn about their made-up scandal-mongering, just look at how rudely we’ve jerked their hashtag out of their hands and replaced their bullshit whining with a real scandal.

Oh, please let this become a common tactic among the GOPers (more common than it is even now).

Because what better way to permanently declare yourself unfit for office than to run around bullying your constituents after you didn’t get as vigorous a tongue-bath as you wished you did during an election?

The fact that they like these ideas and relish the thought of hurting lots of people they don’t know further proves how far down the moral toilet the right wing has gone. This is what they think government is for.

“I believe if we shut down these swollen lanes of constantly-flowing cars, shit will get all fucked-up right around heah.”

I wonder if Christie works with Prestige Worldwide. I hear last week they put liquid paper on a bee.
