Corn chips make great emergency fire starters. Try putting a match to one. Very impressive. Not so good as food.

It’s usually a mistake to use the “died for nothing”/hopeless-type stuff in conversation with a soldier you don’t know well. Even if they share your politics it will often lead to an encounter like the one in the video.

I have to side with Killgore on this one: Saying what Tapper said is near certain to provoke the reaction that has occurred. He should have known that and not asked the question in such a way. He has a right to ask what he did, but he should not have done so.

How did he stick his foot in his mouth? By calling the deaths senseless? Certainly one can make a fair argument that these deaths were senseless, or needless, or whatever word that conveys the tragedy and unnecessary aspect of it all.

Tapper works for CNN, so the extreme hawks out there are suspicious of him to begin with. Once he starts questioning the mission, to some of the gung-ho who sound so outraged, he’s already crossed a line in the sand. Thus he must be attacked for insufficient love of America and any of our wars.

He didn’t say died for nothing. That’s your addition to this.

If you’re in an Alamo type situation, as these soldiers were, why is the term hopeless inapplicable?

When 18 of your 19 fellow soldiers have just been killed, and you’re still in deep shit, wouldn’t it be rational for the last man standing to think hope is pretty much gone?

So basically you want reporters to do puff pieces about our military, but never to confront them with the most difficult but important questions of all: why are we there? and is it worth it?

If you’re afraid to ask such questions, how can you responsibly launch a war to begin with?

It’s been over a decade since we had to start hearing the chickenshit questioning of the anti-war, “Why don’t you support the troops? Why do you hate America?” (This is nothing more than a rhetorical shield used by supporters of the war to deflect any real discussion of the wars and their consequences.)

If we can’t get past this shit, then there never will be any serious national discourse on wars, their cost and their efficacy.

No nuance, no respect for Tapper’s history of reporting on and writing about our troops in a thoughtful, respectful way…No. The vultures are out and want to treat him as if he is a member of Code Pink.

The Outpost An Untold Story of American Valor’ By Jake Tapper

The power of “The Outpost” lies in Tapper’s development of the main characters: the young soldiers serving in Nuristan and their anxious families back home. The book’s purpose, he writes, is to help readers “better understand what it is that our troops go through, why they go through it, and what their experience has been like in Afghanistan.” Tapper succeeds here. He juxtaposes dramatic battles, complete with limbs blown off and eyes dangling from sockets, with poignant scenes of wives and parents first learning of the deaths of their loved ones.

A reporter can ask that question of a politician or a general, but to ask it of a current or former enlisted man or company-grade officer is not going to go the reporter’s way. The military is held in much higher regard by most people than the press so if the serviceman has a hostile reaction the blame is going to fall on the reporter.

The guy wrote a book that was made into a movie. Now he’s doing interviews promoting that movie. How is he off limits? No such line exists placing him off limits other than one you’ve arbitrarily constructed.

Tapper asked a perfectly fair question. He’s not to blame for the hostile reaction of others. Everybody except Congress is more popular than the media. So what? Should they just stop doing any semblance of a thorough, critically thoughtful brand of reporting?

Democrat heading bridge probe says Christie could be impeached if he knew of closures

investigations.nbcnews.com

“The chairman of a New Jersey legislative panel investigating the George Washington Bridge lane closures said Gov. Chris Christie’s top aides had engaged in a “cover-up” and the governor could be impeached if it is determined he was aware of efforts to use the bridge for political purposes.

“Using the George Washington Bridge, a public resource, to exact a political vendetta, is a crime,” New Jersey Assemblyman John Wisniewski, who is spearheading the bridge probe, told NBC News on Saturday. “Having people use their official position to have a political game is a crime. So if those tie back to the governor in any way, it clearly becomes an impeachable offense.”

In an air-quality enforcement order, the DEP said air-quality officials who arrived at the site at 11:10 a.m. “discovered that no spill containment measures had been initiated and that an accumulating MCHM leak pool was seeping thru a dike wall adjacent to the Elk River and a downstream oil sheen was observed.”

DEP Secretary Randy Huffman said more information needs to be gathered, but that it seems possible the spill into the river might not have been as bad if Freedom Industries had acted more quickly.

Maximum points for young and hale adults. Kids don’t count. Neither do those who are physically handicapped.

Sportscasters and politicians are the absolute maximum points, as long as you don’t leave bundles of money or bottles of single malt in the road. That’s “baiting”, and it’s illegal in the Lone Star State.

And it would be one thing if Tapper was hostile. He was not. Not at all. It is obvious he has great respect for our troops while having some legitimate questions about the long, long war.

Credit Glenn Beck for the outrage on this one.
Too bad some here are falling for it.

Exactly. Tapper’s not the kind of reporter who would try to goad a soldier into defending an unpopular war. And, even if you know nothing about Tapper, I think it’s fairly evident from the context. Once Luttrell seems to be offended by one of the questions, Tapper backs down in a nearly apologetic way. If anything, Tapper was quite deferential once he realized the interviewee was upset.

I think he might have been fishing for a reaction. Just before his offending comments he asked something like “do you think Americans want to see this”? “Regina Egea, then the director of Mr. Christie’s Authorities Unit and now his incoming chief of staff, received word of the lane closures and resulting traffic chaos in Fort Lee, N.J., just three hours after the closures were ordered to be reversed by a New York official on Sept. 13.

“Ms. Egea is a longtime member of Mr. Christie’s inner circle and one of his ten most senior staff members. The emails show the highest levels of Mr. Christie’s staff were made aware of the traffic problems in Fort Lee as early as Sept. 13-five days after they began and the day they were reversed…”

So knock yourself out getting outraged about questions by a reporter who has a long reputation for being very respectful towards the military. I thought your typical stance on such nontroversies was that they’re overblown nonsense.

But hey, he “might have made a mistake in etiquette”. So what? And what etiquette are you talking about? Can you articulate the exact rules?

The interviewee wrote a book being made into a movie, and he’s promoting that movie. Is that not also business? Should a soldier be insulated from any tough question? Especially after he’s written a book and gone on tour to promote a movie?

One of our three cats lives outdoors now. She got kicked out of the house for peeing everywhere. She is a real sweetheart and a fantastic hunter; my neighbors across the street commented that ever since we moved in with her, his critter problem has gone away. She has her own house (a failed attempt at a garden box that we re-purposed with a heating pad). Her chief competition is a black tom who gave her her first and only litter of kittens, of which only one survived and we wound up giving that one to a shelter. I try to chase him away so that he doesn’t eat all her food, but in the end they both get at least some food.
