Christie and Official Who Arranged Bridge Closures Were Together During Fiasco

Gov. Chris Christie is seen with David Wildstein, in red tie, on Sept. 11, 2013, before a ceremony on the 12th anniversary of the 2001 World Trade Center attacks in Manhattan, in a photo obtained by The Wall Street Journal. Sept. 11 was the third day of the lane closures in Fort Lee, N.J.

In his news conference last week, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he had not seen aide David Wildstein (implicated in the GWB bridge-closing scandal) for “a long time.”

Well, it seems this was not true.

Gov. Chris Christie was with the official who arranged the closure of local lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 11, 2013 — the third day of the closures, and well after they had triggered outrage from local officials beset by heavy traffic.

It isn’t known what, if anything, Mr. Christie discussed with David Wildstein that day, when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official was among the delegation of Mr. Christie’s representatives who welcomed him to the site of the World Trade Center for the commemoration of the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks there.

Christie spokesman Colin Reed said, “Of course, Governor Christie attended the September 11th ceremony as he has done every year since he took office. He had numerous interactions with public officials that morning, including representatives of the Port Authority. They were all there for one reason - to pay tribute to the heroes of 9/11.”

Mr. Wildstein did not respond to a request for comment.

Also present with Mr. Christie that day were Bill Baroni, the authority’s deputy executive director, who was helping Mr. Wildstein manage the fallout from the closures among local officials, subpoenaed documents show. Also there was David Samson, the Port Authority chairman and close Christie ally, who has said he didn’t learn of the lane closures and traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., until an email from a New York port official ordered the lane closures reversed. Messrs. Samson and Baroni didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Apparently a month and a half is “a long time” to some folks. And funny, but it doesn’t look like the two are men who barely know each other in that picture.

There should not be any sarcasm in this statement.

It’s blatantly dishonest when you stand before a bunch of beat reporters, many of which cover NYC and NJ events on a daily basis, and who followed the Governor around when he visited the 9/11 memorial, which is located on Port Authority property. Port Authority personnel died in the attacks, and it was their WTC that was destroyed by the terrorists. Top officials from the PANYNJ are present for the memorial events, ribbon cutting, etc. at PANYNJ facilities, and it would take just a short search to find photos of the Governor with someone like Wildstein.

It’s not surprising to find PANYNJ officials in tow with the Governor during a tour of the site. It would be more surprising that the top officials - especially ones he selected for those posts - weren’t around him.

That photo’s from the same article and shows them all together in June to announce the Bayonne Bridge navigation clearance project (another Port Authority project).

But it’s disheartening to find media outlets weren’t going to call him on that during his presser, even though many accompany him around on a regular basis as part of his press gaggle.

Such a simple thing to check, and yet…

I don’t think it’s ineptitude so much as hubris. I really think that Christie thought he was beyond the reach of a good investigative reporter.

Too clever by half.

This is what I was talking about when I said that Christie should have simply gone with the prepared statement and then left the room without taking questions. I can only presume he did the whole prolonged Q&A session in the hopes that it would show some frankness and openness with the press, but all it did instead was leave him making statements that the press were going to follow up on.

Congrats, dumbass, you just buried yourself.

So now, atop gullibility, you have to believe that Christie has a piss-poor memory recall in order to believe that he was totally in the dark about this before last Wednesday. Not exactly endearing qualities in a potential presidential nominee.

I was a little confused about the timing here but the article says this:

Mr. Christie addressed Mr. Wildstein in a news conference last week, saying he had not encountered him “in a long time.”

“I have had no contact with David Wildstein in a long time, a long time, well before the election,” which was held Nov. 5, Mr. Christie said last week. “You know, I could probably count on one hand the number of conversations I’ve had with David since he worked at the Port Authority. I did not interact with David.”

The line of questioning not asked:

You nominated Baroni, Wildstein, and Samson to the top posts at the Port Authority for NJ, and yet you claim you have no contact with them at any point during the period at issue - from say June through September.

Yet, there are photos of the two of you at the WTC 9/11 event, and the Bayonne Bridge announcement in June. That indicates that you’ve had more contact than you claim here.

Would you like to revise and extend your comments again?

Are we to believe that you let this public agency do its own thing with no input from the governor of the state of NJ despite the fact that major decisions frequently get the input from the governors about where/how to spend funds, like say cancelling the ARC project and reallocating those funds to state highway repair (the Pulaski Skyway for one).

Would you like to revise and extend your comments once more?

Mind you too that Wildstein is the guy who went and bought domain names for other Port Authority officials and for Barbara Buono, Christie’s opponent in the election. No reason was ever stated for why he did this.

It is not clear why Wildstein, a childhood friend of Christie’s, has been collecting domain names. In some cases, the Web addresses he’s purchased have been in the names of presumed adversaries, like Foye. But he also reserved Internet addresses for people he admires, such as the late U.S. Rep. Bob Franks, and a friend’s newborn baby.

The domain names often have a common thread, revealing hints of humor and secrecy in a man who once anonymously ran PolitickerNJ under the pseudonym of Wally Edge, the name of a former Republican governor.

None of the names are redirected to sinister websites. In fact, most take users to the website of Wildstein’s favorite baseball team, the Yankees.

Still, many targets had no idea that Wildstein reserved their Internet identities and some were stunned when they learned of purchases last week.

Foye “absolutely did not know,” that Wildstein in April had purchased patfoye.com, a Port Authority spokeswoman, Lisa MacSpadden, said on Friday. “He’s very disturbed and bewildered by that revelation.”

Wildstein purchased buonosilva.org on July 26 — the day it was made public that Buono would announce Milly Silva as her running mate. The same day, Wildstein purchased millysilva.com, according to a database of Internet domain names.

“It’s amusing, but also creepy and strange,” Silva said last week. “The notion that this person purchased domain names I might seek to use is troubling.”

Wildstein declined to be interviewed for this article or to explain why he has compiled an inventory of domain names over the years. Internet records show he has purchased at least 48 and has renewed some of them annually. Domain names typically cost less than $10 for a year’s exclusive use of the domain name.

Christie’s ally

Christie’s top political strategist, Mike DuHaime, said neither he nor the governor knew that Wildstein had been purchasing the opposition’s domain names.

“This was done independently of the campaign and without any authorization,” he said. “The governor had no knowledge either.”

Wildstein, who prefers to work in the background, has come under intense scrutiny as controversy has mushroomed over his decision to close two of three access lanes from Fort Lee to the George Washington Bridge in September.

This too is likely to come back with the investigations. Christie’s campaign says they didn’t know what Wildstein was doing, but now one has to wonder if Kelly was involved in some fashion given the way she was implicated in the lane closures.

One of the reasons that WSJ was involved in this is that it appears that WSJ reporters were among those stuck in the traffic jams for hours, and they sought answers from PANYNJ officials and were stonewalled.

Lawyers all know not to ask questions in court they don’t know the answers to already.

Reporters just don’t operate that way, it seems. They gave Christie, a lawyer, a pass at his presser, treating him as his political persona. Obviously he had them by the balls, not the other way around. And they allowed it.

The journalists are the ones engaging in discovery for the rest of us, and it takes journalists who can piece together disparate parts to help - like knowing the Governor was blowing smoke about not having contact with Wildstein during the period at issue. No surprise at this, though.

DADE CITY — A retired Tampa Police Department captain who told investigators he was “in fear” when he fatally shot a man at a movie theater was denied bond Tuesday. (my emphasis)

“During a first appearance, Curtis Reeves, 71, appeared on a video monitor from the Land O’ Lakes Jail. Reeves is charged with second-degree murder in Monday afternoon’s death of Chad Oulson. He faces a possibility of life in prison if found guilty.

That’s not necessarily true, and you should know it.

The JSF is for a threat that doesn’t even exist, and for which existing aircraft are sufficient - the F18 is cheaper and is the USN front line aircraft. No need to spend several times as much for an aircraft that will do the same mission.

The diplomatic security issue is one of blantant and gross hypocrisy by the GOP. They demanded security and answers about Benghazi, but ignore that the GOP refused to address State Department requests for more security - more security that could only come via more appropriations for security personnel. Cut the fund, and you reduce the security posture.

At the same time, the GOP refuses to save money by moving the Vatican embassy, which was proposed by the Bush Administration.

It also refuses to take steps that would make the USPS more able to address its fiscal issues. They’d rather destroy the post office than recognize that their obscene demands to fully fund out their pension costs ahead of time will destroy an organization that was constitutionally mandated.

I always thought she was forced to resign—there was no bones about it from the people in Juneau about her being out of control, esp after her run w/McCain; Troopergate and other stuff had come out, too. Don’t forget, she had also accepted a huge advance (over $1M) from Harper Collins in the spring contrary to AK law which prevented outside employment for govt workers which conflicted with official duties.

I don’t think people in AK thought very much of the negative attention she brought to the State and the stuff that was unearthed by reporters.

Fox News is apoplectic (as usual) over the FBI report that no criminal charges will be filed in the IRS “scandal”.

The officials said investigators didn’t find the kind of political bias or “enemy hunting” that would amount to a violation of criminal law. Instead, what emerged during the probe was evidence of a mismanaged bureaucracy enforcing rules about tax-exemption applications it didn’t understand, according to the law-enforcement officials.

Haha, the Bieb’s house raided after vandalism of egging neighbor’s house complaint; one “guest” arrested for cocaine possession. Presser being held now by LA Sheriff’s office. Calls egging incident “felony crime” of damage to property. Cocaine was in “plain view” of deputies looking for evidence.

Apparently, he was doing like 100+ MPH through his gated community recently and that drew the ire of fellow resident Keyshawn Johnson who chased down Bieber’s Ferrari in his (not making this up) Prius. One of the reasons that WSJ was involved in this is that it appears that WSJ reporters were among those stuck in the traffic jams for hours, and they sought answers from PANYNJ officials and were stonewalled.

This is payback.

I saw the WSJ reporter on Rachel’s show (Fri I think) and he denied the part about the people being stuck in traffic.

talkingpointsmemo.com

snip from article:

After the release of the documents on Friday, both Mann, the Journal reporter, and the newspaper’s deputy New York bureau chief reacted to the released email on Twitter.

“For the record, my editors take the train,” Mann wrote Friday afternoon.

“Nor have we ever asked [Mann] to look into traffic problems,” Michael Amon, the newspaper’s deputy New York bureau chief, added. “NJTransit delays are another story entirely though.”

Court strikes down FCC’s Net Neutrality rule

A federal appeals court has struck down an FCC ruling meant to prevent ISPs from prioritizing some website traffic over others, saying the ruling had no basis in law.

The so called “net neutrality” rule, put in place in 2010, was intended to ensure equal access to all types of content. Regulators and politicians feared that Internet companies might offer tiered access to premium content as cable television providers do — or unfairly fast-track access to their own content sources over competitors.

“A broadband provider like Comcast might limit its end-user subscribers’ ability to access The New York Times website if it wanted to spike traffic to its own news website,” the ruling notes.

But because of a quirk in how the government regulates Internet service providers, the court said that the FCC didn’t have the legal basis for its policy.

“Because the Commission has failed to establish that the anti-discrimination and anti-blocking rules do not impose per se common carrier obligations, we vacate those portions of the Open Internet Order.”

The FCC said it was considering its options, including potentially appealing the ruling

The impact of Snowden/Greenwald’s PR offensive as told through what’s currently topping two major subreddits.

r/videos:

(A rise in conspiratorial thinking. A truther video currently tops the subreddit, when in the past it likely would have been relegated to r/conspiracy.)

r/worldnews:

(Shoddy, click-bait, yellow journalism is now the norm.)

The Wired story that links to is based entirely on a blog post by Mozzilla’s CTO Brendan Eich. In his post Brandon never once mentions the NSA, and instead talks about the need for security researchers to audit code/binaries for surveillance from all quarters:

It is becoming increasingly difficult to trust the privacy properties of software and services we rely on to use the Internet. Governments, companies, groups and individuals may be surveilling us without our knowledge. This is particularly troubling when such surveillance is done by governments under statutes that provide limited court oversight and almost no room for public scrutiny.

As a result of laws in the US and elsewhere, prudent users must interact with Internet services knowing that despite how much any cloud-service company wants to protect privacy, at the end of the day most big companies must comply with the law.

To ensure that no one can inject undetected surveillance code into Firefox, security researchers and organizations should:

As an example of government gag orders, Eich does mention the lavabit case, but that was an FBI investigation. In any case, Wired transformed that into some sort of global confrontation against the NSA, as having “NSA” in your misleading and overwrought title is where the traffic is at.

**Peng Shuai vomited, then cramped up, and had to be helped off the court.

**Yaroslava Shvedova had to be covered in ice towels between sets of her match.

**Caroline Wozniacki placed her water bottle on the ground, and the bottom of it melted.

**The soles of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s sneakers melted.

**Jelena Jankovic burned her bottom on a seat.

Is this sorry excuse for a human being seriously invoking SYG in this or is it the news outlets pontificating about it?

“Popcorn lung”…it was a “real thing” in the courts. Millions awarded in a lawsuit over the diacetyl in the microwave popcorn.

Yeah, didn’t that guy work in a factory where they mfg it? IIRC.

I’m not a lawyer, but it seems to me that if you’re the only one with the gun, the only one that’s alive at the end of the encounter, and the worst thing that happened to you is that somebody raised their voice and possibly threw popcorn at you, I’m thinking that “Victim” is a tough card to play.

RBS

The problem Reeves has that Zimmerman didn’t is that one of the people he shot is still alive and that there were other witnesses there in the theater.

From CNN:

If the shooter can prove the texter was wearing a hoodie…….

If the guy he shot was black, they’d have let him walk on the spot.

Has Reeves’ lawyer established that the dad was a gang-sign flashing reefer addict yet? Better hit those old FaceBook pages.
