Whereas here, we got another 2-4 in. overnight. Just enough to foul up the roads, adding to what’s already a respectable snowfall total and promising that this spring, at least, will not be a drought in the wild north country.

It’s been a sunny and warm week here, which may make some of you envious, but it comes at a price:

Persistent zone of high pressure blamed for West Coast drought

As California struggles through a run of historically dry weather, most residents are looking at falling reservoir levels, dusty air and thirsty lawns.

But meteorologists have fixed their attention on the scientific phenomenon they say is to blame for the emerging drought: a vast zone of high pressure in the atmosphere off the West Coast, nearly four miles high and 2,000 miles long, so stubborn that one researcher has named it the “Ridiculously Resilient Ridge.”

The mass of high air pressure has been blocking Pacific winter storms from coming ashore in California, deflecting them into Alaska and British Columbia, even delivering rain and cold weather to the East Coast. Similar high-pressure zones pop up all the time during most winters, but they usually break down, allowing rain to get through to California. This one has anchored itself for 13 months, since December 2012, making it unprecedented in modern weather records and puzzling researchers.

[…]

With each passing week, California’s lack of rainfall becomes more serious.

Last year was the driest calendar year in recorded history in California in most cities, with records going back 160 years. The first snowpack reading in the Sierra Nevada this month found a snowpack of just 20 percent of normal.

Seagulls are acclimatized by bad behavior. They get bad in places where there are tons of people and the lowest common human denominator gets them accustomed to being fed. In the wild out here on the west coast, on beaches that don’t see huge crowds they behave themselves just fine.

The reason people won’t be picnicking on that beach is that they’d be too close to the seal rookery, violating the Marine Mammals Protection Act.

OK, Frank, I’ll accept that. It’s just that along the Chicago lakeshore they’re pretty bad. They way they chased off the pigeons near the Landmark Cafe in Lincoln Park Zoo and set up shop there especially browns me off.

Haha.

It was fascinating to see; they’ve finally restored the station to what it was pre-Allied bombing in WWII. It was under renovation on our last trip. Some of the work that went into it was pretty insane, bluntly - but the Japanese ideas on how to solve things frequently include a willingness to throw more money and manpower at it than folks in the US would do.

It’s a gorgeous station though, even if the majority of it has nothing to do with the original building anymore.

Samson: I found out about this on September 13 in the email from Foye.
But I was with Baroni, Wildstein, and Christie on September 11th in the midst of all of the lane closure turmoil. We are all so fucking clueless that nobody even mentioned it.

Mr. Christie said in December that he learned of the traffic problems only after the Journal published an internal email from the Port Authority’s top New York official reversing the closures. That email and the accompanying news article appeared Oct. 1.
So, when he met with Baroni, Wildstein, and Samson on September 11th, he knew nothing, nothing.

And that’s why we need the EPA. The parties most responsible for accidents like this one are not always the most responsive.

Meanwhile, I hear from my friends in Louisville downriver that the water company is monitoring the Ohio and has ways to deal with dangerous levels of the chemical. Louisville gets its drinking water from the Ohio (scary as it may sound), and the water co. does a fine job of making it safe to drink. Chemical spills are a different matter entirely.

So the UI extension once again sits in limbo, and once again the GOP shows its true colors.

First they said they wouldn’t allow a UI extension at all, at least until it started polling well enough that 6 of them broke ranks to allow cloture the first go-around.

Then they said they’d only allow it if off-sets were included, to which Reid said he’d listen. They immediately had two pushes, one by McConnell to (again) delay the ACA individual mandate for a year, another by Ayotte and company to smash a tax credit that they claim goes to illegal immigrants while allowing them to undo the military pension cuts in the budget deal, both of which got axed by Reid and Senate Dems.

So then Reid says that he’ll allow votes on amendments, but only five per party and only ones he deems relevant to the bill. The GOP immediately balks, declaring that they should be allowed to vote on as many amendments as they like, regardless of the relevance to the bill. Shortly after this tantrum, one lets slip that even if they get that demand, they’ll still likely vote against cloture, meaning they want a conga line of painful votes to take place with no guarantee that they won’t filibuster the bill anyway.

So Reid finally says “Fuck it” and puts forward a bill that Democrats have written up, paying for a year long extension of UI benefits by taking savings from the sequester as an off-set. He’s met the GOP demands that the costs be off-set while still allowing a year’s extension. The GOP response? “IT GOES TOO LONG!”

And keep in mind, even if Reid somehow finds a way to get this damned bill out of the Senate, John of Orange has already said the bill is pretty much dead in the House because they don’t want to pass a UI extension.

Why do Republicans hate us, the US? (Again, I love asking rhetorical questions.)

We have to remember that it’s the most conservative members of Congress, a minority, that are hijacking legislation that affects 100% of working people. They know how to manipulate people with fear and racism and they get the money and position with which to accomplish that and with which to show their venality and to whom they are really loyal. It’s up to the rest of us to show, by example, that we can care for each other, even through govt means, while people still retain their human rights and can protect themselves, their children, their neighbors and their communities, by helping one another, regardless of who we are as individuals.

I think the average UI weekly payment is around $300. Those members of Congress blocking it are getting more than 10 times that amount per week, plus perks, to stop the rest of us from paying our rent, while at the same time, not passing any legislation of any form that might employ us.

I despise them with a white hot passion when I see the struggles and misery of so many people while they are living it up on the taxpayer’s dime.

No it is not mind altering in any way. Shisha (the tobacco typically in a hookah is essentially flavoured tobacco. If you are not a smoker, you may feel light headed from smoking but that it something that can occur to a non smoker who smokes a cigarette too. Lots of debate now as some are marketing Shisha in north America as a safer tobacco alternative. In fact it is not safer in any way, and there is some science to suggest that it is has more ill health effects than basic cigarette smoking (possibly relating to the coal burned to heat the hookah). All that said, it can make for a pleasant outing, and I have enjoyed it a few times. Wouldn’t make a habit of it.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. While most pundits and media outlets seem fixated on Christie’s SotS address, a few others are pointing to the NYT article (and related articles in other media outlets) that the NSA was hacking Chinese and Russian computers using hardware to find out what their respective military forces were up to. The same tech was also being used against drug cartels, terror groups, and even the EU.

Some of these revelations are courtesy of none other than Ed Snowden.

Tell me again how these revelations don’t harm US national security?

This isn’t about revealing that the US spies on its own citizens - an issue on which Greenwald blathered endlessly and bloviated and opined to anyone and everyone despite the fact that the programs were limited by the courts and federal law, and the focus of NSA remains as it has always been - on foreign threats.

It’s about undermining and dismantling the US intel gathering capabilities.

It’s about undermining US relationships with foreign countries - who all do much the same thing that the US does, and would do if it had the same capabilities.

But it’s harder and harder for the Dudebros and Greenwald to claim that their revelations aren’t harming US interests. Revealing classified programs that let the US know what the Chinese military is doing is objectively harming US national security.

Hookah (water pipes)

Hookah (or narghile) smoking started in the Middle East. Users burn flavored tobacco (called shisha) in a water pipe and inhale the smoke through a long hose. It has become popular among young people.

Hookah smoking is usually a social event in which smokers talk as they pass the pipe around. It’s thought of as a safer alternative to cigarettes because the percentage of tobacco in the product smoked is low and people think the water filters out the toxins. This is false. The water does not filter out many of the toxins. In fact, hookah smoke contains more toxins such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar, heavy metals, and other hazardous substances, than cigarette smoke. And users breathe in secondhand smoke, as well as toxins released from the heat sources used to burn hookah tobacco. It has been suggested that in a typical 1-hour hookah smoking session, users may breathe in 100 to 200 times the amount of smoke, 9 times the amount of carbon dioxide, and nearly twice the amount of nicotine they would get from one cigarette.

Several types of cancer have been linked to hookah smoking, including lung, mouth, and bladder cancer. Hookah use is also linked to other unique risks not found with cigarette smoking. For example, infectious diseases can be spread by sharing the pipe or through the way the tobacco is prepared.

Shisha is a gateway drug/////. I think as you get outside of traditional shisha smoking cultures it appeals to a subset of young people who are perhaps more likely to be pot smokers as well (I have no proof of that just my guess). It is a vice at the end of the day and as another poster here said, he likes to do it before or after he goes drinking. So I think it all kind of fits together for some people.

Back in my day we use to fill a hookah with lots of weed or large pieces of hash mixed in with the tobacco. The social part of passing around the hose made it seem kind of different, and a more cultural experience. But that was just because we were really fucking high.

Cutting security and rebuffed the State Department requests for more security before Benghazi. Yet they continue to have the audacity to claim that there’s some kind of scandal with Benghazi. There is, but not in the way the GOP wants people to believe.

The scandal is that the GOP is conning so many people into thinking something nefarious happened and the Administration did something wrong.

He’s an elected official in Virginia. He’s run and won seats in the state legislature. He’s now seeking a seat in Congress on essentially the same platform of extremism.

His extremist statements are beyond the pale.

It wont matter whether it’s a caucus or primary system, because he may well get the party nod either way.

Heck, Speaker Boehner had a handshake deal on a budget and refused to do a deal, and instead went into full metal wingnut mode by cozying up with the TP extortionists who demanded Obamacare be destroyed or else the government would be shut down.

That is who is responsible. Not the President.

Congress appropriates funds, and they included ACA poison pill provisions that would have prevented millions from getting access to affordable health insurance.

‘cause we didn’t endorse Christie
sprung from cages on Highway 9
we got three lanes closed
so Jersey get your ass in line
wo! maybe this bridgegate was just pay back
it’s a bitch slap

we gotta get out but we can’t
we’re stuck in Governor Chris Christie’s

Governor let me in I wanna be your friend
there’ll no partisan divisions
let me wrap my legs round your mighty rims
and relieve your stressful condition
you’ve got Wall Street masters stuck cheek to cheek

and man I really gotta take a leak, but I can’t
i’m stuck in Governor Chris Christie’s
four lane New Jersey traffic jam

the highway’s jammed with pissed off drivers
with no place left to go
and the press conference went on and on
it was longer than one of my own damn shows

this all will end
but till then you’re killing the working man
who’s stuck in the Governor Chris Christie’s
Fort Lee New Jersey traffic jam

All those journalistic outlets suck and decided to put dollars ahead of US national security by giving an outlet for Snowden’s leaked documents. They wanted eyeballs, so they went with the sensationalist reporting on means and methods that undermine further US intel gathering capabilities.

What part of the leaks about NSA collection methods on Chinese, Russian, terror group, and drug cartels improved US national security or revealed something illegal under US law about US intel gathering methods?

“Another photo shows a Marine crouched down next to a dead body and mugging for the camera.”

Our founding fathers would have a problem with people who don’t accept democratic election results. Part of the reason why John Adams has become revered as a founding father is how he peacefully let Jefferson succeed him in office after Jefferson beat him in the 1800 election. So no that’s not “truth.” The founders would have a bigger problem with people who whine about no taxation without representation who are represented and despite what these numbnuts believe, they weren’t anti big government necessarily either. 188 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 15, 2014 8:21:35am

Drudge is hyping yet another InfoWars (Alex Jones) conspiracy about elevated radiation at Half Moon Bay in California. It’s based largely on a guy walking around a beach with a geiger counter claiming that levels are elevated.

San Jose Mercury News reports that the state has already looked into this and found that radiation levels are naturally occurring and not related to the Fukushima disaster.

Reports on Foxnews.com elsewhere site have touted a study showing an expected “wave” of radiation set to hit the West Coast in 2014. But experts say the levels are so low they pose no threat to human health, and the study those reports are based on noted Cesium-137 and other radionuclides wouldn’t begin hitting California until 2016.

Nevertheless, both San Mateo County and the state tested the beach at Half Moon Bay recently and found the radiation to be naturally occurring and to have nothing to do with Fukushima. State and federal officials also perform ongoing radioactivity monitoring.

“The California Department of Public Health is not aware of any recent activity at Fukushima, or any new data that would cause elevated radioactivity on California shores from the Fukushima incident,” the state said.

“Recent tests by the San Mateo County Public Health Department and CDPH show that elevated levels of radiation at Half Moon Bay are due to naturally occurring materials and not radioactivity associated with the Fukushima incident.”

The EPA estimates people are subject to about 620 millirems of radiation annually, with an average of 200 millirems coming from home radon exposure, which is also found throughout nature. About half the exposure is from natural sources, with medical procedures accounting for the other half.

People living in coastal regions typically see an average of 24 millirems of cosmic radiation, while those living near functioning nuclear power plants typically see less than 1 millirem from that source.

People who fly see higher radiation exposure, as do people living in certain parts of the country where radon is more prevalent. But Jones is once again pushing a conspiracy theory loosely based on reality. Drudge touts Jones’ site as newsworthy.

Yet people take Drudge seriously? Why?

SNAP benefits are limited to the following:

Foods for the household to eat, such as:
breads and cereals
fruits and vegetables
meats, fish and poultry; and
dairy products
Seeds and plants to produce food for the household to eat

You can’t use SNAP to buy the following:
Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco
Any nonfood items, such as pet foods, soaps, paper products, diapers, and household supplies
Vitamins and medicines
Food that will be eaten in the store
Hot foods

They can fucking whine all they want to. My grandson hasn’t received his this month (another “group interview” by this county), so I’m having to buy groceries for them, cutting into my rapidly eroding SS check (I am not on his EBT), not that I mind, it’s just so little and food is expensive. The job he was supposed to get went with the wind when a ball joint on his car broke and he quit his other one prematurely. The Republicans running the State now could give a flying fuck whether or not people starve, and this county is one of the worst when it comes to hiring people for DSS (lots of cronyism, nepotism).

If anyone around here would hire a 72 yr old, I’d get a job, but it isn’t going to happen. So I just try to “keep calm and carry on”.

WASHINGTON — Acting Navy Undersecretary Robert Martinage, the department’s No. 2, has resigned under pressure, sources confirmed for Defense News.

“The resignation, which Martinage announced to his staff Tuesday morning, came after allegations were made of inappropriate conduct with a subordinate woman.

“Martinage, whose permanent position had been deputy Navy undersecretary for plans, policy, oversight and integration, had been performing the duties of the undersecretary since Robert Work resigned last May to take a position with the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank.”

Don’t have a Bose home theater, but I swear by my QC-15 headphones at work. They’re large over the ear and do noise cancellation better than any of the others I’ve tried or used regularly. I used to use JVC or Sony NC headphones, but both weren’t fully over-the-ear and the cancellation effect wasn’t as good and the sound quality fell short.

Of course, the price was 3x as much. I use them everyday, so I am getting my money’s worth.

For the home theater, I have an older Sony 5.1 unit and speakers. They might be getting long in the tooth, but don’t expect to swap them anytime soon. They’ve still got good quality and are relatively unobtrusive.

A lot of people have been swayed to use sound systems that pump up the bass, which means that you’re getting a skewed sound. I’ve seen that in discussions about headphones particularly (Beats being particularly singled out in this regard). I like bass like the next person, but want a good overall sound. YMMV.

To nod to the MBF, there are people on both sides of the discussion who do not understand where the line of separation between Church and State lies…

All in all, it is very difficult to teach the Bible in any public school setting, if one is too objective and neutral, people will grow upset that their point of view is not considered, if one is too ardent about it, then others will see it as a violation of neutrality.

And there are certainly a lot of people who would use “historical Bible study” for a bit of stealth evangelizing if they are allowed to get away with it.

People who fly see higher radiation exposure, as do people living in certain parts of the country where radon is more prevalent. But Jones is once again pushing a conspiracy theory loosely based on reality. Drudge touts Jones’ site as newsworthy.

Yet people take Drudge seriously? Why?

The “Alex Jones Razor”… When faced with two competing theories, pick the one that involves massive government coverup and murders.

Nope. They need to go to a senior center, or each other’s house instead. Old people can be very selfish, too.

From the article:

“Large group — males, females — refusing to get up and leave,” read the police summary of one such 9-1-1 call. “The group passed a lot of sit-down time. Refusing to let other customers sit.”

Yep. Get the fuck out.

Since joining the voucher program in 2008, the school had received over $2 million in payments.

He’s an all-around all-position idiot.

He spoke frequently to media outlets about sexual assault in the military, and called military rape “as predictable as human nature.” “Think of yourself at 25,” Black told a newspaper in 1996. “Wouldn’t you love to have a group of 19-year-old girls under your control, day in, day out?”

The 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, for example, inspired Black to suggest legislation requiring Virginia students to address their teachers as “Ma’am,” “Sir,” “Mr.,” “Ms.,” or “Mrs.,” because, Black explained, “The counterculture revolution of the ’70s took the war into the classroom. Before that time, public schools were a model of decorum, and then we began this thing we’ve seen play out at Columbine.”

For two years in a row, Black introduced legislation requiring women younger than 18 to provide a notarized note from a parent before having an abortion. To justify the bill, he said abortion was a greater evil than segregation or slavery.

In 2003, Black tried to pass legislation preventing same-sex couples to apply for low-interest home loans from the Virginia Housing and Development Authority. The current policy, he explained, “subsidize[s] sodomy and adultery.”

“You know, back in the day, in the colonial period,” Fischer said, “you have to be a landowner, a property owner to be eligible to vote and I don’t think that’s a bad idea. And the is very simple: if somebody owns property in a community, they’re invested in the community. If they’re renters, they’re going to be up and gone; they could leave the next day … [P]eople that are not property owners - it’s like people that pay no taxes, they have no skin in the game.
