Gohmert! - Judges Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage Need ‘Plumbing Lessons’

By Clare Kim

Texas Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert told federal judges who’ve ruled in favor of same-sex marriage to get “some basic plumbing lessons.”

During an event titled “Conversations with Conservatives” hosted by the Heritage Foundation Wednesday, Rep. Gohmert was asked about the federal judge’s ruling that struck down Oklahoma’s ban on same-sex nuptials, declaring it unconstitutional.

Gohmert characterized rulings that allow marriage equality as: “Basically, we haven’t seen any biological evidence to support marriage being between a man and a woman,” Roll Call reported.

Gohmert said those judges “need some basic plumbing lessons,” according to a report from Raw Story. “For one omnipotent, omniscious, ubiquitous federal judge who is wise beyond his education to say - to make such a declaration about the law, I think, requires revisiting by each state and compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court.”

The GOP prefers to call it “legitimate rape”.

So women aren’t people. They’re plumbing.

Republicans; nobody but we are real people.

Now, now. It is kind and thoughtful of Gohmert to let gays know that they really aren’t in satisfying relationships because of the “plumbing” involved. If he didn’t tell them, how would they know they weren’t in a happy fulfilling relationship?

I wonder if the legitimate-rape shutoff is a ball valve or a butterfly type.

So many questions for the Noted and Distinguished Statesman from Texas.

If Gohmert was really worried about “plumbing lessons”, you would think he would be more supportive of comprehensive sex education in schools.

The RWNJS are really in a corner on this one. Sure they can try to claim man/woman marriage should be the only choice because only hetero couples can have kids, but then what about hetero couples who do not want to or are physically unable to procreate? Either you don’t want those marriages to be legal or you need to accept procreation is not the be all, end of all of marriage.

Keith Ablow

In April 2011, Ablow wrote a health column for FoxNews.com[15] which criticized designer Jenna Lyons for publishing an advertisement in the J. Crew catalogue in which she was depicted painting her young son’s toenails hot pink. Ablow wrote that gender distinctions are “part of the magnificent synergy that creates and sustains the human race”. The column sparked a controversy around his claims that painting a child’s toenails pink could have an effect on their gender identity and led to accusations of overreaction, as was reported upon by numerous news media sources.[16][17][18][19] Ablow refused to back down, even re-posting the column on his Facebook page.

During the 2012 Republican primary, Ablow wrote a column arguing that Newt Gingrich’s three marriages actually made him more qualified to be president. He wrote: “When three women want to sign on for life with a man who is now running for president, I worry more about whether we’ll be clamoring for a third Gingrich term, not whether we’ll want to let him go after one.”[20] The column was criticized, with Rod Dreher of The American Conservative commenting thusly: “Oh for frack’s sake. At some point, you have to wonder when shamelessness crosses the line from character defect to psychopathology. If only Dr. Leo Spaceman were a Republican, he could have a lucrative career on Fox.”[21]

Dr. Ablow later clarified that his position was that one’s private sexual life should remain private and that dissecting the sex lives of public figures was counterproductive and salacious.

While providing Fox News television “medical analysis” of the October 11th, 2012 Vice Presidential debate, Ablow strongly and repeatedly suggested that some of Vice President Joe Biden’s behaviors, such as interruptions of the opposing candidate and what he believed to be excessive laughter, might mean that he should be evaluated for dementia, alcoholism, or other conditions.[22] “I’m not diagnosing him,” he clarified. “I haven’t evaluated him. But psychological testing - It’s anyone’s guess what it would show.” Psychologist John Grohol questioned Ablow’s ethical behavior in an article on Psych Central, a website he created for the accurate dissemination of authoritative mental health information to the public. Citing Section 7, Article 3 of the APA’s “Principles of Medical Ethics…,”[23] he accused Ablow of a double standard.[24] “He prefaces his comments with a standard disclaimer media doctors often try to use to make it sound more ethical. Dr. Keith Ablow acknowledges he’s never seen Joe Biden in a professional capacity. Yet, Dr. Ablow is discussing differential diagnoses about Biden as though he had…Would anyone feel comfortable being judged by a medical professional like Dr. Ablow based upon a single incident like this?” At the time of Dr. Ablow’s comments, however, he was no longer affiliated with the APA and not technically bound to its ethical standards.

Basically, we haven’t seen any biological evidence to support marriage being between a man and a woman.

What the fuck does this even mean? Marriage is entirely a social construct. A man could easily pass his genes on by raping as many women as he sees. That’s biologically sound, but socially unacceptable, so human societies have developed things like marriage to add some stability to the whole thing. Now that we’re living in 21st century America, and not 4th century BCE Israel, we’ve tweaked the social construct a bit to include homosexuals. This isn’t hard, Louie.

Honestly, I think reading Gomer is bad for one’s health. Prolonged exposure can cause brain damage.

They’d want to see no-fault eliminated too. Back to the bad old day of for-cause divorce where you’d have to prove cruel and inhuman treatment,
abandonment for a continuous period of one year or more, imprisonment for more than three years subsequent to the marriage, or adultery. Very tough to accomplish, but left lots of people in dangerous and/or unloving situations.

My gut feeling says Fischer wants to go back even further to considering women to be property of their spouses. But he’s not going to come out and say that explicitly. The signs are there though.

Lots of fear—of being “found out” by someone you don’t want to know; losing a job, losing housing, loss of a lot of things, not to mention that polls themselves are not exclusively treated as private information that won’t be sold to a third party.

I can understand why people wouldn’t want to be forthcoming with what some consider to be rather intimate information about themselves, information that could possibly be used against them. That’s what actual oppressive laws can do to people.

Personally, I didn’t marry my wife in order to procreate and we’re both on the fence about having kids (sometimes we want them, then we see other people’s kids) so for us it was, first and foremost about wanting to be together and married because we loved one another.

If a marriage is supposed to be all about having kids and my marriage (under that scenario) I am just glad I don’t live in states where they’ve even tried to push laws that unwed couples can’t live together.

ok, I’ve got to object (though I appreciate the humor).

See, I’ve met too many graduates of MIT for me to hold it in such esteem. Basically it’s the fact it’s a history degree. That has and had this bad habit of being a ‘let’s get by’ course in almost every school - and yes I count MIT in that group. FWIW the schools that don’t seem to use it as a dump stat are the service academies.

Business administration, History, and English, all seem to hit this problem. There ARE programs that require extensive effort and push the need to understand the connections. They’re the exception.

Sensenbrenner is one of the sponsors, and he was useful in the last reauthorization by overwhelming majorities.

The bill is hardly perfect, but it’s a vast improvement over the current mess, which is allowing states to act without repercussion (sure, they can be sued to stop, but that means disenfranchisement until after the court rules against the state action). The VRA would put these kinds of actions on hold until after the courts got to decide whether they were legit or not - protecting the rights of potential voters in the process.

Not just hetero couples, but only those couples of reproductive age and with functioning reproductive systems. That’s the path Gohmert is going down. Sure, he’d like to keep this to hetero couples, but the “plumbing” references ignore that there are plenty of hetero couples who can’t have kids for any number of reasons. Yet we don’t discriminate against their ability to be married and inure the benefits that accompany a civil marriage including tax and employee benefits (insurance, visitation rights, etc.)

You could not rent a place if you were simply living together, and having a “friend†of the opposite sex staying overnight could get you evicted.

When I was 20, I had just moved to Kentucky and tried to rent an apartment with my girlfriend. The first place we went, would not even consider doing such a thing.

The year was fucking 1989. Of course it was only later I found Mark Twain’s excellent quote explaining that for most of history, Kentucky has been 20 ass-backwards years behind everyone else.

I was shocked, but of course also that dumb place lost several thousand dollars’ worth of business.

I thought that was A&M.

I just moved to Houston shortly after the bonfire tragedy in College Station; there was non-stop coverage on the local stations for days and days. A year later when A&M decided that bonfire would no longer be allowed, there was a lot of uproar from students and alum. The school held a townhall forum to discuss their decision and allowed individuals to speak. One of the students got up to the microphone and proceeded to explain how life was not worth living if there was no bonfire. He even cried and screeched at the mic. True story.

That’s when I realized I moved to the wrong state.

I married my wife with the hopes we would one day have them (and now sometimes we don’t) ;)

The thing is, they tacitly accept the relatedness that evolution implies - and that implies evolution. They struggle to articulate it in a way that DOESN’T overtly accept evolution, but they really do not believe in separate, special creation.

I feel like there’s also an implicit concession by creationists that the scientific method IS superior to unfalsifiable belief in each argument. Either they try to put lipstick on a pig and make creationism sound all science-y (“intelligent design”), or they dry to drag science down to the level of unfalsifiable belief (which is what Erickson and Mohler are doing here).

It shows that they know they’ve lost the honest debate, so they’re going to try to make the “debate” a charade.

Speaking of Utah and SSM.

Utah tax officials allow joint filing for married same-sex couples

“Previously, the Utah Tax Commission had issued a policy statement saying it would not allow joint filing of state returns by gay or lesbian couples married legally in any other state. That was before a federal judge struck down Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage but after the Internal Revenue Service had announced it would allow joint filing by same-sex couples married legally anywhere, regardless of their state of residence.”

This applies only to the 2013 returns and could be reversed depending upon Utah’s appeal of the decision striking down their ban on SSM.

But I have a feeling that this decision to recognize these marriages as legal will have a profound impact on the full 10th circuicts decision.

Same-sex couples who are eligible to file a joint federal income tax return and who elect to file jointly, may also file a joint 2013 Utah Individual Income Tax return as provided in Utah Code § 59-10-503. Eligible married couples may file a joint return if they are married as of the close of the tax year. (As of December 31, 2013, the Supreme Court had not yet issued its stay of the District Court’s injunction.)

LIMITATIONS

This notice is limited to the 2013 tax year. Filing information for future years will be provided as court rulings and other information become available. If any taxpayers are required to file amended 2013 tax returns based on future court rulings, they will not be subject to penalties for any tax deficiencies resulting solely from following this guidance. As with all income tax returns, any original or amended returns for 2013 may be subject to audit

There is a whole field of pseudoscience called ‘Baraminology’, which Creationists use to build their ‘Evolution only occurs within kinds’ argument, as well as their answer to how the ark could POSSIBLY contain one of each kind. The latter argument goes that each ‘kind’ was represented by a single species, which subsequently diverged into all the current species. Thus, the large diversity of Felids all diverged from a single proto-cat species.

Of course, this requires evolution on a MUCH, MUCH shorter timescale!!

But it allows them to pretend they have an answer. Plus of course they get to include Magic in their explanation.

re: #11 Eclectic Cyborg

The RWNJS are really in a corner on this one. Sure they can try to claim man/woman marriage should be the only choice because only hetero couples can have kids, but then what about hetero couples who do not want to or are physically unable to procreate? Either you don’t want those marriages to be legal or you need to accept procreation is not the be all, end of all of marriage.

You have to understand, they don’t think it that far through.

There is one and exactly one reason to desire the criminality of same-sex marriage: Because God Said So™.

There’s just one little problem with that: Because God Said So™ is not an acceptable basis for the law in the United States of America. You have to be able to show that there’s some sort of good reason beyond purely religious dogma.

So, in their attempts to provide some non-religious reason to keep SSM illegal, they have to try to find some other reason that it shouldn’t be allowed. Their current tack for that is to try to show that Marriage, rather than being a simple legal context established between consenting adults, has something fundamentally to do with heterosexual norms.

This, of course, is horseshit. But deeply religious people don’t really have a problem with that.

I defer to Epicurus:

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

One of the earliest TV shows I remember was Pinky Lee —unfortunately named, considering the McCarthyism of that era.

When Did Girls Start Wearing Pink?
Every generation brings a new definition of masculinity and femininity that manifests itself in children’s dress

By Jeanne Maglaty
smithsonianmag.com
April 8, 2011
Excerpts:

We find the look unsettling today, yet social convention of 1884, when FDR was photographed at age 2 1/2, dictated that boys wore dresses until age 6 or 7, also the time of their first haircut. Franklin’s outfit was considered gender-neutral.

But nowadays people just have to know the sex of a baby or young child at first glance, says Jo B. Paoletti, a historian at the University of Maryland and author of Pink and Blue: Telling the Girls From the Boys in America, to be published later this year. Thus we see, for example, a pink headband encircling the bald head of an infant girl.

Why have young children’s clothing styles changed so dramatically? How did we end up with two “teams”—boys in blue and girls in pink?

In 1927, Time magazine printed a chart showing sex-appropriate colors for girls and boys according to leading U.S. stores. In Boston, Filene’s told parents to dress boys in pink. So did Best & Co. in New York City, Halle’s in Cleveland and Marshall Field in Chicago.

Today’s color dictate wasn’t established until the 1940s, as a result of Americans’ preferences as interpreted by manufacturers and retailers. “It could have gone the other way,” Paoletti says.

So the baby boomers were raised in gender-specific clothing. Boys dressed like their fathers, girls like their mothers. Girls had to wear dresses to school, though unadorned styles and tomboy play clothes were acceptable.

When the women’s liberation movement arrived in the mid-1960s, with its anti-feminine, anti-fashion message, the unisex look became the rage—but completely reversed from the time of young Franklin Roosevelt. Now young girls were dressing in masculine—or at least unfeminine—styles, devoid of gender hints. Paoletti found that in the 1970s, the Sears, Roebuck catalog pictured no pink toddler clothing for two years.

A heterosexual gender match doesn’t magically connote virility on a couple. If Gohmert had his purported way and all marriage was based on “plumbing” capable of producing children then that leaves a lot of sterile people out in the cold. An entire class of human beings, post menopausal women, women who’ve had hysterectomies / oophorectomies, and otherwise infertile men and women would have no legit reason for getting married.

Since it’s the voting block they most count on I somehow doubt that the GOP bigots very much want to go around telling old people that their late in life marriages are a sham mockery of nature and God. Indirectly however that is exactly the message they’re sending when they say shit like this.

One teaspoon vanilla-sugar
Half a pound flour
150 g ground nuts
A little extra powdered sugar
… and no eggs

Place in a bowl
Add butter
Add the ground nuts and
Knead the dough

Form eyeball-size pieces from the dough
Roll in the powdered sugar
And say the magic words:
sim sala bim bamba sala do saladim

Then word will be ‘leaked’ to her opponent that pedophles support Wendy Davis! And here’s the proof!

Remember, her opponent is a member of the modern GOP and there is very little they are unwilling to do in order to gain power.

AXE better watch out…

Man sues Unilever after toothpaste fails to help him attract women

The 26-year-old man filed the lawsuit against Unilever Nigeria Limited, saying its ads for the toothpaste — which show women getting all hot and bothered after a dude brushes his teeth — are deceptive and false. Because he’s still single, despite using Close-up for seven years.

In his suit he claims “no girl ever agreed to even go out for a tea or coffee with me, even though I’m sure they could smell my breath. I always brush my teeth with so much close up gel to make sure the girls get turned on by my fresh breath as they usually show on TV.”

As evidence in the case, he’s submitting all of his tubes of toothpaste — the used, the half-used and those he has yet to use — as evidence.

The lonely life he’s living due to lack of help from the toothpaste has left him feeling “cheated” and in a state of “mental anguish.”

1. God provides the best explanation of the origin of the universe. Given the scientific evidence we have about our universe and its origins, and bolstered by arguments presented by philosophers for centuries, it is highly probable that the universe had an absolute beginning. Since the universe, like everything else, could not have merely popped into being without a cause, there must exist a transcendent reality beyond time and space that brought the universe into existence. This entity must therefore be enormously powerful. Only a transcendent, unembodied mind suitably fits that description.

so, this ‘entity’, like the universe, and everything else, “could not have merely popped into being without a cause”, either - wouldn’t you agree?

and what is your explanation of the origin of this “enormously powerful” entity, the, um, “transcendent, unembodied mind”?

Dawn Wells did. At the time of sitcom, her then-husband was an entertainment industry attorney. He told her to make sure residuals were in her contract.

Not-so-fun-fact: None of the cast members got a dime in syndication royalties from Gilligan’s Island. That show is probably still on the air, somewhere.

Actually, Dawn Wells got royalties.

It has long been stated that the entire cast of Gilligan’s Island (1964) never received residuals beyond the first four reruns of each episode. This was true for the entire cast except Dawn Wells. When the show was picked up by CBS and Dawn was cast to replace Nancy McCarthy, she was married to her agent at the time. In her original contract she was to be paid $1200 per week plus the residual contract the six other castaways received. Her husband/agent said that should the show become successful Dawn would not benefit from receiving such a limited residual option. Believing the show would flop, the CBS executives humored Dawn and her husband and put a clause in her contract giving her long-term residuals should the show ever syndicate. As a result from that clause Dawn has made literally millions of dollars as the years have gone by from syndication of “Gilligan’s Island”. This was never public knowledge. Dawn and series creator Sherwood Schwartz are the only individuals to profit long-term from the series.

Yeah, the drought continues. For western states, drought conditions affect a slightly larger area than last year but it just a smidge less intense than last year at this time. You have to go back to May 2012 to find a time when less than 50% of the West is not in some form of drought condition. Or December 2011 to find when less than 50% was not abnormally dry.

Malware in Target Breach Written Partly in Russian, Report Says

online.wsj.com

“The holiday data breach at Target Corp. appeared to be part of a broad and highly sophisticated hacking campaign against multiple retailers, according to a report prepared with the U.S. government.

“In some of the first details to emerge about the source of the attack that compromised 40 million credit- and debit-card accounts and personal data of 70 million people, the report said parts of the malicious computer code used had been on the online black market since last spring and were written partially in Russian.”

WHO IS ANTIKILLER?

A more full-featured Breadcrumbs-level analysis of this malware author will have to wait for another day, but for now there are some clues already dug up and assembled by Russian security firm Group-IB.

Not long after Antikiller began offering his BlackPOS crimeware for sale, Group-IB published an analysis of it, stating that “customers of major US banks, such as such as Chase (Newark, Delaware), Capital One (Virginia, Richmond), Citibank (South Dakota), Union Bank of California (California, San Diego), Nordstrom FSB Debit (Scottsdale, Arizona), were compromised by this malware.”

IIRC, it was Dawn Wells (successful), Adam West/Burt Ward (unsuccessful), and the cast of Star Trek (unsuccessful) that were some of the touchstones/poster-children for massive overhauls to the residuals clauses in TV contracts.

But that could be misremembered anecdata.

Dawn Wells’ case is one of those urban myths that won’t die. Her residuals contract was used up within two years:

DW: I don’t know there was a whole lot to save, but I’m a businesswoman. I know this business is fickle, so I’ve tried very hard with investments. I’m not rich by any means. Had we had some of those residuals everybody had, sure. But I’ve managed to make a good living all my life and to provide for when I get old and I’m alone.

B: So you don’t make money from the show in syndication?

DW: Not a bit. Not after the first five runs of each episode, which took about two years.

B: So at this point it’s all (show creator) Sherwood Schwartz’s?

DW: No. Time Warner.

She stayed busy though, worked theater, the odd TV gig, GI reunions and was quick to capitalize on the internet by selling GI merchandize on her website. Smart lady.

This is just a badly worded and dumbed down version of Thomas Aquinas’ Cosmological Argument. It’s something that modern science shows is not required for the existence of the universe and is therefore debunked.

Even if it was true, this ‘entity’ does not necessarily have to continue to exist, nor does it, simply on the basis of this argument, match the Christian or any other God as portrayed in by any religion in existence.

Yandle, who’s in private practice, will be Obama’s pick for the district court for the Southern District of his home state of Illinois. If confirmed, that would make her the first African-American judge ever on that court, and the first openly gay judge in the 7th Circuit, which covers Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.”

there must exist a transcendent reality beyond time and space that brought the universe into existence

no, there doesn’t

the bfi address is legit, it represents some company working with Target called Bigfoot Data Protection or something like that.

Ah, ok. I just read the article to the end and discovered that it was, in fact, legit. Which explains also why I was able to get to the same page by navigating directly from the target.com root.

I see a survey where they don’t really want to hear what people want. They only want people to tell them they’re right.

Please proceed.

The comments I was referring to are the twitter responses to that tweet.

heh…responses are great!

I like how strictly pigeon holed those options are. No room for deviation, reflection or a difference of opinion. No text field option to send a personalized message. Just tell us which of the things we already stand for is most likely to get you to send us money.

That’s not a survey, it’s a direct mail targeting tool.

I didn’t even bother clicking the tweet link, I just saw some twitter responses in my TL, so went to the tweet itself where responses are GREAT.

re: #359 dog philosopher

it’s a rare case where every single assertion in the entire chain of argument is bogus:

God provides the best explanation of the origin of the universe

no he doesn’t

Given the scientific evidence we have about our universe and its origins, and bolstered by arguments presented by philosophers for centuries, it is highly probable that the universe had an absolute beginning

not necessarily at all. why? does your “God” have an absolute beginning?

Since the universe, like everything else, could not have merely popped into being without a cause

why not?

there must exist a transcendent reality beyond time and space that brought the universe into existence

no, there doesn’t

This entity must therefore be enormously powerful. Only a transcendent, unembodied mind suitably fits that description

no, other things could account for it

Stop thinking.

It scares them.

Added bonus: Target may not have actually gotten your e-mail at all, as several folks have reported getting them on addresses never used at Target - but in many cases used with Amazon.

They’re doing a phenomenal job of demonstrating how not to respond to a major data breach.

re: #367 Backwoods_Sleuth

Went out to grab an armload of firewood a little while ago before the sun set. Heard a strange noise and saw a possum attempting to run for its life down the driveway.
A driveway covered in ice.
The attempt at running was not graceful.

I laughed.

If I’d only known it was going to happen.
Usually the possum is just on the porch eating catfood.

“President Barack Obama has already nominated more African-American judges and more LGBT judges than any previous president. On Thursday, >he’ll announce the nomination of Staci Michelle Yandle, the first African-American lesbian federal judge he’s picked.

You think he’s doing some of this just to troll the RWers?

That would be funny, but I suspect he’s doing it because she’s good.

1. God provides the best explanation of the origin of the universe. []

so, this ‘entity’, like the universe, and everything else, “could not have merely popped into being without a cause”, either - wouldn’t you agree?

and what is your explanation of the origin of this “enormously powerful” entity, the, um, “transcendent, unembodied mind”?

S/he/it popped out of nowhere. Do I win?

They also found pot in their backpacks. See my #255

They probably didn’t want to carry anything heavy out, so they could move faster, so the beer coolers probably had to stay behind.
