MN GOP State Senator Sued for Defaulting on Small Business Administration Loan

A “fiscal conservative”
US News • Views: 28,972

Minnesota Republican State Senator Sean R. Nienow calls himself a small-government fiscal conservative, yet for some reason he’s reportedly in default on a six-figure loan from the Small Business Administration: Sen. Sean Nienow, R-Cambridge, Wife Sued in $613,000 Federal Loan Default.

The Nienows borrowed the money for their company, the National Camp Association, Inc., described in news accounts as an organization that helps parents select a camp. The association, which is listed on the Minnesota secretary of state’s website at the Nienows’ home address in Cambridge, also was sued.

[…]

The suit alleges that on Jan. 16, 2009, the SBA provided the loan to the association and it was personally guaranteed by the Nienows. A copy of the signed guarantee is attached to the suit.

“The defendants ceased making payments on or about July 28, 2010, and the Note has not been repaid,” the suit said. “Defendants have defaulted under the terms and conditions of the Note by failing to repay said Note.”

Although demand for payment was made, the Nienows did not comply, the suit said, and they owe an unpaid principal balance of $558,076.53 and administrative costs of $189,861.09 for a total of $747,937.62.

Sen. Nienow, 46, did not respond Friday to phone calls, a text message or e-mail.

An organization that helps parents select a camp. What could be more wholesome and family-friendly?

So, if we didn’t already know it, the “personal guarantee” of a fiscal conservative is worth exactly nothing.

I’ve been lurking and catching up from behind on most of the day’s threads all along, but seeing your comment, I had to jump in and say there seems to be a whole hell of a lot of the narcissistic, arrogant and pompous, call it what you want, blended into a unreadable stew going in many of the linked articles today. The understanding of marriage and “family” is so larded with social punishment for non-conformity (in the form of gossip, shunning, and shaming) that you end up with people first doing nothing to make the marriage work, then blowing up the marriage just to escape. I’d to add that the community-endorsed model of conflict resolution in those “conservative Christian” enclaves basically involves the wife shutting up, no other discussion, the husband being “the man” and thus discouraged from sharing burdens with his wife, and the worst possible cocktail of gendered malarkey that keeps people from being open and honest.

So, they borrowed $600K to fund an organization to help parents choose summer camps? They must have had one hell of a business plan. I figure I could do the same thing with a few hundred dollars, a PO box and a website. Why would they need $600K?

My suspicious nature tells me this fiscal conservative may have used the government money to pay off some other debts, or to line his own pockets. Or, alternatively, he sucks at running a business.

Decided to go on a Wikipedia jaunt through the Amarna period of Ancient Egypt.

What is the possibility that King Tut was not a son of Akhenaten, but of Smenkhkare?

Because of this this discovery?

DNA testing announced in February 2010 has speculated that her mummy is one of two 18th Dynasty queens recovered from KV21 in the Valley of the Kings. The two fetuses found buried with Tutankhamun have been proven to be his children, and the current theory is Ankhesenamun is their mother. Not enough DNA was able to be retrieved from the mummies in KV21 to make positive identities of the queens. Enough DNA was pulled to show that the mummy known as KV21a fits as the mother of the two fetuses in Tutankhamun’s tomb. The assumption that she is Ankhesenamun fits with her being the only known wife of Tutankhamun in the historical record. There is however one problem with this identification: if KV21a is Ankhesenamun, then the KV55 mummy cannot be Akhenaten, known to be her father from historical records. The DNA retrieved of the KV21a mummy fits with her being the mother of the fetuses, but not the daughter of KV55. Therefore: A) this mummy is not Ankhesenamun, but another, unknown wife of Tutankhamun, or B) the KV55 mummy is not Akhenaten, but another brother of his, possibly the ephemeral Smenkhare. The KV21a mummy though, does have DNA consistent with the 18th dynasty royal line, therefore fits as a member of the Thutmosid ruling house.

I googled this guy Nienow. He listed compensation by the National Camp Association Inc. in a campaign finance report filed with the state government.
cfboard.state.mn.us

At the end of 2008, the assets of the company were $143,253, according to BrightScope, which tracks 401(k) plans. Nienow was listed as the sole participant in the firm’s profit-sharing plan. He also claimed a waiver of examination of the books by a CPA. brightscope.com

Wikipedia lists his occupation as process consultant and adviser. He was formerly employed by American Express Financial Advisers.

I’m not sure I’d trust his financial advice right now.

I’m not quite sure he knows that a major portion of the Chinese American population born in the country were born to illegal immigrants.

I learned that reading books by Amy Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston. Many of the Chinese men landing in California in the late 1800s had papers that were forged or completely fabricated. There are untold numbers of Chinese — and people from many other countries — who came here on tourist or student visas, and then melted into the general population.

From the Lenni Lenape, Narragansett and other natives’ perspective, my ancestors were illegal immigrants, too, for that matter.

The whole concept of a “documented” immigrant did not exist at the founding of the nation. There was a time when it did not matter, if you made it over here and established yourself (there was no social safety net to speak of) you were a resident. Nobody really asked for papers.

So long as you followed all the local laws, paid your taxes, and otherwise were a citizen in good standing, the fact that you hadn’t done a bunch of paperwork before or after arriving didn’t really matter. You were an American, you were welcomed, and you had a chance to prove your worth.

Well, some of those local laws also included ‘it’s okay to shoot a Chinaman’ and ‘Swedes get paid half the going rate’.

The ‘welcome’ for some immigrants has traditionally been a bit harsh and come with a pick and shovel attached.

Very true. But immigration laws as we understand them today are a relatively recent invention. There were no quotas, no months-long background checks, no need to provide proof that a job was waiting for them, and they didn’t have to wait months or years before they could bring the rest of the family over. It’s only been in the last 50-60 years that we’ve imposed all this, mostly in an effort to throttle back immigration of all but white East Europeans.

Oh, longer than that. Immigration officers were giving IQ tests around 1900 — in English of course. Back then, the group not to be in was any Eastern European. Women traveling alone were suspected of being hookers, and if they had no family in the States, were generally sent back home.

Which is why I noted that the laws as we understand them today. Not that we’ve given up most of it. We still require that new immigrants be able to speak English and they of course have to be able to pass a basic civics test that I doubt most Americans could pass on the first try.

Morning! The images in #37…Wow. What a concept, and Stanley Sea, you are so right.

Dark_Falcon, they should anger you. But you should also celebrate that an artist has the freedom to express himself. Some places in this world that would not happen. And, if some of the issues he is depicting didn’t happen in the world, then there would be no reason for the image. Train your anger on the issues.

Guns and gun talk anger me. Real images we’ve seen all too often in the media of what guns cause anger me. And guns cause lots of actual human destruction and pain. An artist does not. They reflect it for awareness. Yet, people do not want guns banned, but ban an artist is okay to many. I do not get it. I put it down as screwed up priorities.

And the cool looking doggie in #75 is great. Love the colors and the layout of the photo. I don’t know if an artist-type took that image, but the layout is great. Sometimes things just work.

I know there are “blue dog” democrats, I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a blue dog!

Fifteen year old Pakistani kid gives his own life to stop a suicide bomber:

Aitzaz Hasan, 15, was with friends outside school when they spotted a man wearing a suicide vest.

Despite the pleas of his fellow students, he decided to confront and capture the bomber who then detonated his vest, his cousin told the BBC

Aitzaz’s friends had urged him not to confront the suicide bomber but he ignored their pleas and decided to confront the man with the intention of halting him.

“So he told them ‘I’m going to stop him. He is going to school to kill my friends’. He wanted to capture this suicide bomber. He wanted to stop [him]. Meanwhile the suicide bomber blasted himself which resulted in the death of my cousin,” Mr Bangish said.

Back to the thread theme “small businessman” is a loose and much-abused concept. I remember Dukakis reminding Bush that he was a “small businessman” because he owned cattle, Bush himself was barely aware of the fact.

Yeah, we had a lot of Humvees & SUVs pop up during those years around here. Along with a few “defense contractor” offices that didn’t seem to do anything but receive govt money—one investigated was featured in the local weekly rag; the strip mall office was always locked, there was no activity, and no one connected with it would speak to anyone, but govt records showed whoever leased the property was getting govt funds in $250K amts. I think if you had connections, you could cash in if you had a scheme of some sort. The govt wasn’t paying that much attention until the Inspector General started auditing and only one case in AL sticks in my mind that made news about having gotten money for virtually doing nothing, but there were plenty.

Pro-gun control mayor, MAIG member gets time for gun charges (VIDEO)

James Schiliro, a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, was sentenced to 10 to 20 months this week after using three handguns to illegally detain a man he had a crush on.

In February 2013, Mayor James “Jay” Schiliro of Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, ordered a city police officer to bring a certain town resident by his home. The man, a 20-year old former neighbor, was kept there by Schiliro who “made him drink wine, and refused to let him leave for three and a half hours,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Schiliro reportedly threatened to kill himself and fired a gun into a stack of papers during the incident. Eventually, the victim, Nicholas Dorsam, was able to leave and then called police.

“That night was a culmination of feelings which had built up over 25 years,” said Schiliro. Apparently, the two men had been long acquaintances and Dorsam was on the receiving end of an unwanted attraction. The lurid details of the drunken encounter that led to gunplay and threats were well covered elsewhere in the media.

This led to the mayor’s arrest and charges of unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment, official oppression and furnishing alcohol to a minor. At the time of his arrest, Delaware County District Attorney John Whelan told the press, “The mayor, I believe, has indicated to the press that he has some issues.”

That’s one douchecanoe which be heading up the river.

Putin: Russia must “cleanse” itself of homosexuality

cbsnews.com

MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered new assurances to gay athletes and fans attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next month. Yet he defends Russia’s anti-gay law by equating gays with pedophiles and says Russia needs to “cleanse” itself of homosexuality if it wants to increase its birth rate.

“Putin’s comments in a TV interview broadcast Sunday still show the wide gulf between the perception of homosexuality in Russia versus the West. A Russian law passed last year banning “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” among minors has caused an international outcry.”

Putin sounds just like Bryan Fischer. No wonder those types love Putin.

OTOH, heterosexuals can’t help themselves when they have an overabundance of kids they don’t really want and others to have to take care of by adoption, etc.

And why is it that the vast mistreatment of kids in every area is by heterosexuals?

Because heterosexuals are the vast majority of the population.

Putin is a lot more dangerous than Bryan Fischer. Unlike Fischer, he holds direct political power with very few constraints. The US should consider granting gay Russians asylum, though only after strong vetting and investigation (the FSB would be certain to use such an opportunity to insert agents).

Communism is a very “straight-laced” political philosophy as it is practiced in modern societies. Students who went to Cuba in the “Venceremos Brigades” years ago were cautioned about Cuba’s attitude toward gays and told to keep it quiet.

Russia hasn’t had its “freedom” (or at least, its change from collectivism to capitalism) very long, and it still appears to retain the mores of the statist society.

I didn’t say he was like Fischer; I said he “sounds like” Fischer. You’re assuming Russia would grant visas for gay Russians to leave the country, if they wanted to. The smart thing for them to do would be to visit another country and defect as a political prisoner in a friendly country that would allow it. There are other countries, also, that are more tolerant of gays than the US.

Putin may be a shithead, but he’s not a blockhead. He knows exactly what he’s doing with his anti-gay campaign: It’s popular within Russia while being hated and condemned in the West. It’s designed to produce anger, fear, and mutual suspicion between Russians and westerners. This creates the “Army of God versus the Band of the Damned” feeling that aids the tyrant in his rule.

Most of the GOP candidates for president, including Romney, signed NOM’s ugly pledge to enshrine bigotry.

Didn’t someone post a chart around here recently showing how America felt very much the same percentage wise many years ago? After all, we did have all the sodomy laws and they were used to arrest and jail homosexuals in America. All that changed. And going after people as he is doing may cause a backlash or an awareness that could change those numbers.

I was in the 60s-70s women’s movement and at that time, we worked a lot w/lesbians and gays, as did many in the civil rights movement; in fact, lesbians were more prone to join the women’s movement. There were some fundamental philosophical and political differences between lesbians and gay men, much more than there are today, but it didn’t stop coalitions. I think there are probably, from what I’ve read, more libertarian gay men today than those who see some common cause with lesbians and feminist women. This is part of the change I see, but it’s disheartening to see people get some of the things they want and abandon their old “friends” in political circles while they continue to use things like white male privilege as a bludgeon. See, for instance: Glenn Greenwald, et al. But, that’s life in a new era.

Just as people change, so do politics.

Dark…you do realize that over time those shifting of words end up actually being placed into a dictionary as a definition. Language is funny that way.

As an example which fits into some of the comments and discussion this morning: was the word “gay.” Go read The FreeDictionary’s notation on how it came about to add it into the definitions. That was an obvious word for me to use. I’m sure if given some thought, there are tons of words that have added definitions because of popular usage.

Dictionaries really are just a record of language and how it develops and morphs over time. I doubt that “gay” was used as a definition for sexual preference 50 years ago. Now that I write that, it would be interesting to note when it actually was added. I love the study of words and language.

I think it became more prominently used after the Stonewall riots. But here’s another explanation of the word’s evolution, too. I often heard it used back in the day—none of us said “homosexual” by that time.

Thanks for that link. I don’t remember ever coming across that web site. Gonna bookmark that one for future cruising.

By the way, the explanation for gay is fascinating. This part I did not know and find surprising:

However, around the early parts of the 17th century, the word began to be associated with immorality. By the mid 17th century, according to an Oxford dictionary definition at the time, the meaning of the word had changed to mean “addicted to pleasures and dissipations. Often euphemistically: Of loose and immoral life”. This is an extension of one of the original meanings of “carefree”, meaning more or less uninhibited.

Talk about a whole new definition, but then to find out its roots are quite old. Truly a Thing I Found Out Today!

That is coming perilously close to exterminationist language.

I think tattooing is on the wane in some circles. My grandson doesn’t have any (although his parents do) and he’s 23; none of his friends have them, either, as far as I know, except for one girl he knows (friend, not gf). Most of those I see now are on people well past their teen years. I think some kids nowadays see the excesses of their parents as not something they want to pursue.

Now that would be a refreshing trend reversal. It was always hard to accept tattoos as they always carried so many negative connotations when I was younger. Amazing the shifting back’n’forth…just like with words!

Jamaican Bobsled Team Qualifies for 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics

Watts told Chadband the financial hardship the team is under at the moment:

In truth, we still don’t really know at the moment if we’d even have enough funds or sponsorship to fly to Sochi itself for the Games itself. It all depends. Our families need to be taken care of first. If there’s no funding, who knows?

But, I’m one of life’s optimists. I put my heart on the line for this. Any British companies out there interested in sponsorin’ us? Hopefully, the Jamaican Olympic Association will step in and support us now we’ve qualified.

To my knowledge Philly does not require a permit to take outdoor pictures. I do know movie shoots do require permits and there is an office in the city that helps them.

Svoboda (political party)

The All-Ukrainian Union “Svoboda” (Ukrainian: Всеукраїнське об’єднання «Свобода», Vseukrayinske obyednannia “Svoboda”), translated as Freedom, is a Ukrainian nationalist political party,[2] and currently one of the five major parties of the country.[12]

Founded in 1991 as the Social-National Party of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Соціал-національна партія України), the party has acted as a proponent of nationalism and anti-communism in Ukrainian politics. It is positioned on the right of the Ukrainian political spectrum,[5][2][13][14] and has been described by some scholars as far-right.[6][7][8][9] The current party leader (elected every two years[15]) is Oleh Tyahnybok, who has held the role since February 2004.[2]

During the 2009 and 2010 local elections in Galicia, the party made significant gains and became a major force in local government.[16][17] In the 2012 Ukrainian parliamentary elections, Svoboda won its first seats in the Ukrainian Parliament,[18] garnering 10.44% of the popular vote and the 4th most seats among national political parties;[19] this transposed into 37 parliamentary seats.[20] In October 2012, Svoboda joined a formal coalition with the centre-right Batkivshchyna and UDAR parties to form the parliament’s collective opposition.

Continues.

201 Gus  Sun, Jan 19, 2014 10:00:29am

Svoboda actively participates in the ongoing pro-European Union protest campaign aimed at influencing regime change and integration with the EU.

After the Vladimir Lenin monument in Kiev was toppled during the ongoing Euromaidan protest, MP Igor Myroshnychenko officially accepted responsibility for this action on behalf of the Svoboda,[63] though it is unclear whether the party organized and/or planned it.

Once in the EU I’m sure they’ll quickly align themselves with the BNP, EDL, UKIP, etc.

I notice there is no link to this statement:

“Svoboda actively participates in the ongoing pro-European Union protest campaign aimed at influencing regime change and integration with the EU.”

Smearing the entirety of the protests with charges of fascism and nationalism from Wikileaks doesn’t make it so. And the link to “ZIK” doesn’t work (63). Svoboda can claim responsibility, but it doesn’t make that so, either. They could simply be “hangers-on” in the larger scheme of protests, making an opportunity for themselves.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama told Remnick.

When asked if he believes marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, Obama said it is less damaging “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”

“It’s not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy,” he added.

Ukraine crisis: Clashes after thousands defy protest ban

bbc.co.uk

“Clashes have broken out after large crowds of pro-EU demonstrators rallied in Ukraine’s capital against new laws which aim to curb public protests.

“Stun grenades and flares were thrown as groups of people headed for parliament, which was cordoned off by rows of police and buses.

“Opposition politician Vitali Klitschko tried to stop attacks on police.

“The laws were passed with a quick show of hands on Thursday by MPs loyal to President Viktor Yanukovych. “

Don’t know if I’d trust Klitschko, though. I think he’s an opportunist who is anti-gay and probably anti-immigrant, racist and anti-semitic as well. His party coordinates with nationalist parties All-Ukrainian Union “Fatherland” and All-Ukrainian Union “Svoboda”.

re: #235 Romantic Heretic

I notice that a reliable source is quoted for the downward movement but, um, dubious sources for the hate.

I’m so surprised. //

The Center for Responsive Politics — they’re the ones that run the opensecrets.org website — lists Pelosi’s net worth now at $58 million.

As much as I hate the Kochs, this is *not* a one-sided problem.

Guess who said it?

And, just for balance, I should say that I think JPod is getting too hung up on the phrase “ethnic balance” as a codeword for all sorts of unlovely things. It seems to me that if you’re going to sit down and have any immigration policy at all, it’s unavoidable that you’re going to address the issue of ethnic balance in one way or another, no matter what you call it. Ultimately, you have to choose where people come from if you have an immigration policy, even if you emphasize other factors like skills or family unification. So you can either look at it directly or you can skirt around it. But you can’t avoid it.

That’s not much of a game when everybody has the Google.

Nope. But watch for them/drink anyway.

Haha. I am amused by the fact that so many of the rules involve taking shots, but winning the game means ordering Papa Johns, as if greasy pizza will somehow make the alcohol poisoning more tolerable. XD

Also, just for the day I am a Seahawks fan. Screw the 49ers. I’d like to see Seattle go to the Super Bowl.

The Denver/NE game doesn’t mean anything to me but I’m watching it anyway.

2 weeks from now, Seattle 35 Denver 28. ;)

“Hep” used to be an Anti-Semitic expression 200 years ago.

I did not know that. (/carson)
