Glenn Greenwald Co-Opts MLK to Attack the US

White-splaining again
Wingnuts • Views: 17,047

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Mighty Glenn Greenwald wasted no time trying to co-opt the legacy of MLK for his anti-US propaganda campaign: MLK’s Vehement Condemnations of US Militarism Are More Relevant Than Ever.

The subtitle, in case you missed the animus: “His vital April 4, 1967 speech is a direct repudiation of the sophistry now used to defend US violence and aggression.”

This is the MLK quote Greenwald wants you to hear:

But Dr. King also said some other things that bear directly on Greenwald’s pet agenda. For example, in his Letter From a Birmingham Jail:

I hope you are able to see the distinction I am trying to point out. In no sense do I advocate evading or defying the law, as would the rabid segregationist. That would lead to anarchy. One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty. I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.

You’re not likely to hear those quotes from Glenn Greenwald, because they beautifully illustrate the cowardice and dishonesty of Greenwald’s hero, Edward Snowden.

And Dr. King surrendered himself to the authorities, cooperated with them, and allowed the injustice of his imprisonment work against the system. He didn’t run to another country and declare that he would not allow himself to be jailed for a crime he refused to recognize as legitimate. Nor did his supporters say that he was right to run because the authorities would have him killed.

Charles Johnson,

Not just Greenwald, who has co-opted king for their own agenda and taken his words out of context. It seems to be pretty common now. On the bright side, its a sign of how far we’ve come and how much respect America has for him now. However, it also shows either massive dishonesty or an unwillingness to do any research on the part of a large number of people.

It shows both and its not a new thing. Nuance doesn’t fare well on Twitter and dishonesty isn’t a problem if the people you’re writing for don’t want to hear the truth.

“Yes, well the context doesn’t really matter.”
“It actually makes the passage you’re using mean the exact opposite.”

How many times have we heard wingnuts declare “If he were white, he wouldn’t have been elected/reelected”? They can take their bitching about the “race card” and cram it.

18 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Jan 20, 2014 10:35:35am

If Greenwald wanted to look at injustice, he might start here. But he won’t, because reporting on problems within Brazil would rapidly get him in trouble, since Latin American countries don’t take criticism from Americans very well.

Obama should be held up by any conservative with integrity as proof that race does not matter: someone from a non-priveleged background (note choice of words, not “underpriveleged”, just not as priveleged as the scions of political families like the Bushs, Kennedys, Romneys or Gores), who worked hard and succeded, becoming editor of the Harvard Law Review in college before entering politics.

But the vitriol that has been spewed at thim shows how superficial those convictions are when they are put to the test.

If Barack Obama was a white man named Barron Oberlin, conservatives would have rushed out to saint him. He is everything they claim to love.

Raised by a single mother and his grandparents in fairly modest means. Worked his way up to Columbia University. Became president of the Harvard Law Review. Taught Constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Successful attorney. Successful author. Charismatic speaker. Pragmatic and rational instead of a fire-breathing ideologue. Raised non-religious, but became a Christian by choice. Faithfully married to a successful, independent woman and father of two beautiful daughters.

Problem is, he’s the wrong race and belongs to the wrong party, so the RWNJs have to be bigoted morans when it comes to him.

If the President were a Republican, he’d be hailed as the very embodiment of the success of “conservatism,” that he worked hard and made something of himself from humble beginnings, rather than being the scion of a political dynasty who is running more on his family name or influence than his own proposals.

In other words, displayed a courage and a willingness to live with the consequences that Snowden never could.

I’m still pretty much going with the story that Snowden, full of his own dudebro hero-narrative bullshit, was suckered by the FSB into taking a shit-ton of data out of the US, and has just been played like the biggest tool of the 21st century. And Greenwald is ALSO one of the biggest tools of the 21st century.

As someone who loves America, it’s very sobering, and saddening, to reflect on the fact that Sarah Palin got 46% of the vote in 2008. I believe that reflecting on this is worthwhile. I’m not happy about it, but it’s shows something about America that’s TRUE. Precisely what it shows, I’m not sure.

And yes, the tweet you quoted is right-on. Sarah Palin is a remarkably crummy human being. For better or worse, at least she’s open about who she is. The Real Sarah is no secret; she’s been all over the airwaves for years.
