Sarah Palin Co-Opts MLK to Attack President Obama, Commenters Spew Racism

Caribou Barbie weighs in, while her followers provide the hate
Wingnuts • Views: 21,962

Next one up in the Co-Opt MLK Sweepstakes, the always dim-witted Sarah Palin, who uses the occasion of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to accuse President Obama of “playing the race card.”

Mr. President, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all who commit to ending any racial divide, no more playing the race card.

This asinine turnspeak is always a winner with the knuckle-dragging right wing base. Here’s a sampling of the comments for her Facebook post, in which complaints about being falsely accused of racism are juxtaposed with incredibly hateful racism, often right next to each other:

Be careful of what you wish for… We are judging them by the content of their character and it is not good.

[…]

Pin the tale on the Honkie. He is blaming racism for him being the worst president in history.

[…]

This president had set race relations in this country back 50 years. We were finally making headway until he took over and ruined it. For this and a host of other reasons, I declare his presidency an epic fail!! Shame on him!!

[…]

I am white and now have a dream my four children will one day live in a country where they aren’t prejudged because they are white.

[…]

everytime some one goes against Obama hes gonna play the race card but he needs to look the mirror and decide who hes gonna be racist against because he is white and black!!!!!!!!!!

[…]

We do judge on content of character and we’re called racist for it.

[…]

Obama could have been one of the greatest presidents this country ever knew if he hadn’t played the race card, loved the USA more then his Muslim faith and fought to prevent socialism and bring back our American values and pride.

[…]

Amen, Sarah. I don’t believe it is the white race that is prejudice in the year of our Lord 2014. Seems to me that it is definitely some misguided black people that will not let the nations problem with color, die. I believe they are doing it purely for personal reasons, their pocketbook.

[…]

Hitler aka Obama has undone everything n set this country back a 100 years more..

[…]

This administration has done the most to divide the races since slavery.

[…]

He would be very disappointed in the first black president and the obamaphone foodstamp “ain’t nobody got time fo dat” crowd that exists now

[…]

Obama just can’t get over the fact that he’s half white.

[…]

Don’t for get the fraud, voting several times and illegal voting. threats by black panthers, oh and the dead that voted for him. Not race hes as much white as black, but hes muslim.

[…]

Maybe he resents being half white.

[…]

The problem today is blacks hating whites and feeling that we owe them something because we are white. Most of the whites migrated here after slavery.

[…]

Today’s blacks are more racists than today’s whites. Today’s blacks want a handout and don’t wanna Put in work to get it like MLK.

[…]

The content of their character IS the problem!

[…]

the white,s do not have a race problem with the black,s the black,s have the problem, they are really better off, than the white,we have to work for what we get, you just hold your hand out.

[…]

It is not about the color of skin. It is the content of their character. Clean up your acts. Quit being a race of ghetto gang banging thug criminals wanting your entire life paid for. Quit being the true racists in America. Try making MLK proud instead of ashamed.

[…]

No one can prove what race he is…he could just be Arab….a lot of Arabs are mixed. We have seen enough birth certificates and none are accurate. He doesnt even know his exact birthday. He cant even prove who his Mother is…in all honesty. His so called book wasnt written by him, and it is a fairy tale that, in his mind, actually happened. This guy has no known ACTUAL proven past, and what there is…cannot be seen…why is it hidden? No one verified his SS#. His marriage is a sham, due to his “background” that “is proven” and I have no respect for a woman who would live as she has. Maybe some day..she will disappear as his other.”lovers”. This whole nightmare is just allowed to continue with no recourse. Where is the strength and honesty in this country? How can we recover from the embarrassments we have faced. around the world… with the deception connected the Obama legacy?????

Let’s see, there’s the cost of the economic crash that the previous admin allowed to rollercoaster without delay, putting the cost of two foreign wars back on the books rather than running them on a separate ledger, the cost of maintaining tax cuts that should have been allowed to expire, the cost of all the welfare to those left unemployed by the economic crash, stop me if this starts getting repetitive…

OfficeMax addresses junk mail to father of “daughter killed in car crash

No one likes junk mail. It’s annoying, we agree. We never imagined one simple piece of mail could cause a family pain and trauma, but it did last week. An Illinois man received what at first appeared to be an ordinary mailing from OfficeMax, except under his name was the line “daughter killed in car crash”.

While it might seem like a shot in the dark, it wasn’t. The man and his family are still dealing with the aftermath of his 17-year-old daughter’s death in a car accident last year, the Los Angeles Times reports.

How did OfficeMax get ahold of this very personal information? The man says he’s not a regular customer and would never tell anyone from OfficeMax about the crash.

OfficeMax officials said in a statement that the mailing is the result of a list rented through a third-party provider and offered their apologies to the man and his family.

I seriously think that the only acceptable African-American public figures are those that spew paranoid lunacy even moreso than your typical white wingnut (see West, Allen). Anyone else is either a thug, welfare cheat, or communist.

There’s a pretty deep vein to mine in the way that Putin uses “manliness” as part of his image management as a dictator. Not just the shirtless thing…the “Putin’s girls,” the outdoorsmanship, etc. Old school male potency equals leadership potency stuff.

It is 51F right now here in eastern Kentucky.
A Winter Storm Advisory begins at midnight (along with 2-4 inches of snow and 10-20 mph winds with gusts up to 30).
Tomorrow night’s low is forecast to be 1F.

In all seriousness, the cold won’t be as awful as 2 weeks ago with the “polar vortex”, but snow will be pretty significant. 6-10 inches in the city and Nassau (probably more towards 10 in Nassau), 10-14 in Suffolk.

Most storms are worst “north and west” of the city when it comes to snowfall totals, but not this one. If you’re in Orange County or the Poconos, you’ll only see a couple of inches.

I always like that “Why not set the wages at $100/hr and make everybody rich?!,” because it assumes that A) anybody’s suggesting that the purpose of raising the minimum wage is to make people rich and B) that the person engaging in such sarcasm feels no need to justify his own wages.

To get serious about it, it is because they have no understanding of Economics as a science beyond business economics.

There is labor as a business commodity, which puts people on the same level as staples, toner and copier paper, another expense to be minimized, and then there is the social and human value of labor as a component not only of human dignity, but also the ability to live and support one’s family and give them a chance a t a better future.

Not to mention the fact that paper and toner can be disposed of at no loss to them, but when people get put out on the street, who gets stuck dealing with the expenses and problems that creates?

LOL I had almost the same experience, except I bitched at an Hispanic friend of mine about white guy scholarships, and he set me straight. I remember feeling pretty small that day. But then it became very obvious to me.

I grew up with the kind of lazy, de-facto racism that the GOP pines for and wants to re-impress upon our social order. Each time I realized what I was doing that was bigoted, I was ashamed of how petty and small-minded a thought that was.

So, now some 40+ years later, I’m pretty rough on people who are still figuring this crap out. I don’t feel people have a lot of excuses for being lazy in the head — it costs us nothing at all to think more carefully, ya know?

There’s a pretty deep vein to mine in the way that Putin uses “manliness” as part of his image management as a dictator. Not just the shirtless thing…the “Putin’s girls,” the outdoorsmanship, etc. Old school male potency equals leadership potency stuff.

It gets really creepy when you factor in the anti-gay part though.

I can’t believe people are impressed by this. It’s so…obvious.

I made a similar comment in yesterday’s morning thread. I was using the words over and compensation.

And, no I didn’t mean Putin is a homosexual closet resident. But he sure comes off like he is sacred that even thinking allowing homosexuals basic rights paints him as one so out come the guns, fire up the race car, take off the shirt…see me as manly man.

Funny thing, there most likely are some rather large athletic manly men homosexual males that are likely even more “macho” than Vladimir.

Maybe they should put on some manly man costumes, grab some manly man props and show up to support Putin somewhere he would be glad to show them off as Russia’s best. And after the “show” take Vlad backstage and beat the holy hell out of him. And then as they leave say…who’s the punk?

Why Am I getting a feeling that Sochi 2014 has a chance to come out like Berlin 1936? Will Vlad get put in place by some kind of resounding demonstration?

I don’t understand the hostility to raising the minimum wage. It’s not going to put McDonald’s or most other minimum wage employers out of business. Or even hurt them if the min. wage increases are modest.

And yet there is great anger out there among TP types over a small wage increase for the poorest Americans. Why? Could it be because it disproportionately would help minorities and urbanites?

“It’s not the first accident at the plant. In August 2002, a 45-year-old man was crushed to death by a mixing machine.

“The company at the time was fined $13,600 by OSHA for five “serious” violations and one other violation discovered during an investigation of the accident.

“Separately, in 2012, the firm was fined $10,430 by OSHA to settle six “serious” violations found in a planned inspection. An OSHA report did not detail the violations but said they were in the following categories: Medical services and first aid; handling materials, general; general requirements for machines; abrasive wheel machinery; hand and portable powered tools and equipment; and wiring methods, components and equipment.”

2 nabbed at Texas border in credit card fraud case

bigstory.ap.org

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Account information stolen during the Target security breach is now being divided up and sold off regionally, a South Texas police chief said Monday following the arrest of two Mexican citizens who authorities say arrived at the border with 96 fraudulent credit cards.

“McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said Mary Carmen Garcia, 27, and Daniel Guardiola Dominguez, 28, both of Monterrey, Mexico, used cards containing the account information of South Texas residents. Rodriguez said they were used to buy tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise at national retailers in the area including Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us.

“They’re obviously selling the data sets by region,” Rodriguez said.”

The season finale for Sleepy Hollow is tonight! I, along with the 2nd NC Regt will be somewhere in the show (assuming the scene was not cut) as modern Rev War re-enactors playing as …wait for it…modern Rev War re-enactors. You can see the jokes a mile away as our awakened 18th century hero gets very confused seeing a bunch of people in Continental Army uniforms in 21st century America. So…tune and and get a laugh at the ridiculous stuff the art direction people put in what was supposed to be a Revolutionary War re-enactment camp (like the 19th century train lanterns and the lantern hangers from Hobby Lobby, along with circling the tents around the campfire??!), not to mention the farb uniforms and weapons the actual extras were wearing The bit with re-enactors in a golf cart is icing on the cake (although they admittedly did put that in as comic relief) At least we were able to get them to remove the artillery piece that was on an improvised carriage without any wheels…

But many people WILL work at Pizza Hut or Target or Walmart or McDonalds for their whole lives. Should they live in poverty for most of their lives because they don’t rise to middle management or get a college degree? Let’s face it: not everyone has the intellect or skills to advance very far in the workaday world. Does that mean they don’t deserve a decent wage?

The response I hear from the right is usually along the lines of, “Screw them, let them eat cake.” It’s utterly lacking in both compassion and recognizing certain economic realities.

I guess all of America is talking about Seattle’s Richard Sherman today and his outburst after the game yesterday against San Francisco. I understand there is no room for getting all bigoted about it, but I think what is being lost in the whole debate and outrage is the interview itself.

All the time everyone is told, don’t judge me by my skin, judge me by my actions. Maybe he should have considered his actions.

I have a feeling in a few years when Stewart grows up a bit more and is out of the game, he will look back on the whole thing and be left with one feeling all his own. Embarrassment.

I can hear him in a few years saying “what was I doing/thinking?” Maybe he will be able to use it all to teach some kids class rises above all color, religion, politics…everything. And when you maintain class, it gives the bigots and haters a whole lot less ammo to be outraged about.

It doesn’t matter about one’s race, sex, religion or politics—call people what they are—if they’re dangerous radicals who don’t mind stooping to violence, say so, but don’t use a broad brush to taint others who may share the same characteristics of race, sex, religion or politics.

I don’t consider myself either detractor or supporter. I always try to be a realist. How do you think he will look back on it in a few years? I don’t know your age, but I do know as you age and you look back many times you will find yourself saying, “what was I thinking.”

And after seeing his education level, which I did not know until the media has told me everything, I got to thinking he was going to be one of the guys that will look back with embarrassment. He knows professional and great players act like it. He may have forgot it in the heat of the grudge rivalry, but it will forever be in the games history and he will cringe every time he sees it later.

The Mason quote is altered. The original was:

Forty years ago, when the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British parliament was advised by an artful man, who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people. That it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them. But that they should not do it openly; but to weaken them and let them sink gradually, by totally difusing and neglecting the militia.

I.e., this is not Mason expressing his own opinion of disarmament, but rather describing the governor of Pennsylvania (Sir William Keith)’s reasoning. Mason may well have agreed with that reasoning, but this quote doesn’t demonstrate it.

This was a 15 study review.

Guns in the home raise suicide, homicide risk, review confirms

nbcnews.com

I think we see the results every single day of having a gun in the home.

“Andrew Anglemyer and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco, trolled through studies that had already been done to see if they could clarify the association between gun ownership and violent death. They found 14 studies that found the odds of suicide went up by anywhere from 1.5 times to 10-fold if people had access to guns. Experts say this is partly because guns are far deadlier than other suicide methods, such as taking pills, which may not succeed.

“Studies looking at homicide found that if people had access to guns, they were two to three times more likely to be killed themselves.

“Firearms cause an estimated 31,000 deaths annually in the United States,” they wrote in their report, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. “Data from the 16-state National Violent Death Reporting System indicate that 51.8 percent of deaths from suicide in 2009 were firearm-related; among homicide victims, 66.5 percent were firearm-related.”

And on this day, I should think one MLK would help teach him that lesson.

At least he wasn’t drunk, slobbering all over the reporter, and telling her he wanted to kiss her.

Total bubble they live in.

I guess it was OK when Bush added $5 trillion to the national debt, because it’s less than $7 trillion. Forget the fact that annual deficits were going up throughout the Bush years, starting in his first year, while they’ve been declining for the last 3 years under Obama. Indeed, the party establishment doesn’t even see the debt as a major issue in 2014. It’s all about Obamacare and social issues.

Regardless of how “utterly fearless” Cruz finds her, I doubt if she’ll be taking Rep. Sessions’ spot in the House. He’s been there forever, and I don’t think his far right bona fides are really in question. Then again, you never know when both Texas AND the tea party are involved. It’s a recipe for total fuckedupness.

Our coding standard at work calls for camel case in naming. And variables start with:
b = Boolean
s = String
i = Integer

etc…

I’ve always told my students that the best names are short enough to easily type and long enough to be clearly understood.

If the WW2 GI’s were the MOAST PATRIOTIC PATRIOTS OF ALL TIMES (EXCEPT FOR TEH PATRIOTS OF TEH REVOLUTION)
WHY DID FDR GET ELECTED PRESIDENT 4 TIMES?

Those of them who could vote in 1940 and/or 1944, voted for FDR because he had experience running the government and because his resolution to defend America and defeat her enemies was unparalleled.

Of course, just like the Republicans of the Civil War era weren’t like today’s Republicans, neither was FDR like most post-60’s Democrats. He reacted to the effective failure of naval disarmament treaties by building warships instead of seeking talks the other side was no longer interested in. He didn’t give up on talking till after war had broken out, but he had a realistic view of peace talks and prepared the US as best he could for the war he knew we were likely going to get pulled into.
