Michigan GOP Official: ‘Herd All the Indians’ to Detroit, Build a Fence and Throw in Blankets

More fabulous moments in Republican rebranding
• Views: 28,515

The latest effort in GOP rebranding:

In a recent interview for a profile by The New Yorker titled “Drop Dead, Detroit!” Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson admitted, “Anytime I talk about Detroit, it will not be positive. Therefore, I’m called a Detroit basher. The truth hurts, you know? Tough sh*t.”

Patterson recalled telling his children to “get in and get out” if they needed to go to Detroit.

“And, before you go to Detroit, you get your gas out here. You do not, do not, under any circumstances, stop in Detroit at a gas station! That’s just a call for a carjacking,” he said.

Patterson also proposed a fix to Detroit’s financial problems: Turn the city into a reservation for Native Americans.

“I made a prediction a long time ago, and it’s come to pass. I said, ‘What we’re gonna do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and the corn.’”

After Detroit officials and activists reacted with outrage, Patterson’s office released a statement accusing The New Yorker of having an “agenda.”

I always buy gas in Detroit. The Valero station at M-39 and Grand River is $0.20 cheaper than it is in Dearborn or Southfield.

He may be shocked to learn that Native Americans are not fenced in on their reservations. They can come to his neighborhood any time.

30 years ago, Ford told NYC to drop dead.

NYC is now one of the richest and most prosperous cities on the planet. That happened because of a lot of hard work, getting the crack epidemic under control, ongoing and evolving policing, a fundamental review of how and what it means to run the city as mayor, and we have a much better city to show for it.

The same could potentially happen with places like Detroit or Newark or Camden or Trenton or other rust belt cities.

NYC isn’t alone in a rebirth and renaissance. Pittsburgh also was able to come through the iron industry shutdown and remade itself as a health and tech hub.

Detroit could do the same, but it needs leadership from the governors office - not merely trying to sell off what isn’t bolted down (and the MI governor is hoping the manager will do that too). We’d have to ignore decades of where the Detroit economy was propping up the state economy - it’s time for the rest of the state to help give back and restore Detroit’s economic circumstances.

The claim I know of is from the siege of Fort Pitt in 1763 during the French and Indian Wars.

Wikipedia:

The British considered using smallpox as a biological warfare agent at the Siege of Fort Pitt during the French and Indian Wars (1754-63) against France and its Native American allies. Although it is not clear whether the actual use of smallpox had official sanction, on June 24, 1763, William Trent, a local trader, wrote, “Out of our regard for them [sc. representatives of the besieging Delawares], we gave them two Blankets and an Handkerchief out of the Small Pox Hospital. I hope it will have the desired effect.” Historians do not agree on whether this effort to broadcast the disease was successful. It has also been alleged that smallpox was used as a weapon during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83).

This is true - there were at least three major smallpox epidemics that affected Native American tribes, the worst of which was in the 1770s which wiped out roughly 12,000 (of a total of 40,000) in western Washington - and it must be mentioned that the disease was one that was imported from European nations - it didn’t exist in North America, which is why it was so devastating to the native population, who had absolutely no immunity.

I can only wonder if this was a veiled reference to the (now debunked) folk tale that gained popularity among the far right about the US Army using blankets to spread the smallpox virus, and causing an epidemic in the early 1800s that nearly wiped out several tribes.

British forces attempted to spread smallpox among native Americans allied with Pontiac via blankets at the siege of Ft Pitt during July of 1763.

On June 29, 1763, a week after the siege began, Bouquet was preparing to lead an expedition to relieve Fort Pitt when he received a letter from Amherst making the following proposal: “Could it not be contrived to Send the Small Pox among those Disaffected Tribes of Indians? We must, on this occasion, Use Every Stratagem in our power to Reduce them.”[1]

Bouquet agreed, writing back to Amherst on July 13, 1763: “I will try to inocculate the Indians by means of Blankets that may fall in their hands, taking care however not to get the disease myself.”[2] Amherst responded favorably on July 16, 1763: “You will Do well to try to Innoculate the Indians by means of Blanketts, as well as to try Every other method that can serve to Extirpate this Execreble Race.”[3]

As it turned out, however, officers at the besieged Fort Pitt had already exposed the Indians in just the manner Amherst and Bouquet were discussing. During a parley at Fort Pitt on June 24, 1763, Captain Simeon Ecuyer gave representatives of the besieging Delawares two blankets and a handkerchief from the smallpox ward “out of regard to them” after the Delawares pledged to renew their friendship.[4] While the exact meaning of his phrase was unclear, a later invoice appears to clearly establish the purpose was transmittal of smallpox.[5

I hadn’t heard about possible US Army attempts to use blankets for germ warfare, but the incident at Ft Pitt is well known and I heard about it as a child.

Yep. Smallpox especially. Sad isn’t it. Most people of European descent seem to forget how corrosive the early settlers were on the native populations.

It didn’t even have to be settlers. Just a bit of contact with Europeans was enough to send epidemics sweeping across vast swaths of the Americas who had never encountered Europeans.

For example, the brutal civil war in the Inca Empire that Pizarro stumbled upon at Cajamarca occurred after the Inca Emperor Huayna Capac died of smallpox without anointing his successor, and two of his sons, Atahualpa and Huascar went to war with each other to secure the crown. Thus, smallpox was already devastating the Inca Empire before they had encountered a single European.

In fact, European settlements often sprung up only after the local population had been sufficiently devastated by disease to be unable to resist the European settlements. That’s what happened with the Pilgrims in Massachusetts.

Cheetahs would actually be a long established domesticated housepet today if it were not for the fact that it is incredibly difficult to breed them in captivity (ancient rulers offered stupendous sums to anybody who could get cheetahs to mate in captivity, and some emperors etc 2000 years ago had hundreds of cheetahs in their royal households).

Cheetahs bond quite well with humans (IE they can be trained, are loyal and can interact safely with adults and children), are fantastic hunting animals and desirable pets (serve a purpose useful to humans), can be fed without undue hardship and grow to maturity in a reasonable time frame

Quite literally the only reason they have not been domesticated for the last 3,000 years is that captive breeding was not accomplished until 1968 or so..

Fuck, its not even that.

Divorce and Family Law in Tarrant County, Texas

Sometimes parties served with a TRO are worried that they have been accused of a wide range of bad acts. That’s not the case. A TRO is just an example of a fairly common approach in the law that says “Don’t do these things”, without saying “I think you did these things in the past”. TROs are routine and courts don’t put any significance on them as far as proof, or even accusations, of past acts.

Was.

After he “came out” as an opponent of abortion, several of his colleagues at The Village Voice stopped speaking to him.

And I quit reading him.

He holds the basic dudebro position of freedom being for adult white men and fetuses.

Hentoff holds what mainstream media may describe as idiosyncratic views. He espouses generally liberal views on domestic policy and civil liberties, but in the 1980s, he began articulating more socially conservative positions—opposed to abortion, voluntary euthanasia, and the selective medical treatment of severely disabled infants. Hentoff argued that a consistent life ethic should be the viewpoint of a genuine civil libertarian, arguing that all human rights are at risk when the rights of any one group of people are diminished, that human rights are interconnected, and people deny others’ human rights at their own peril.

Even someone as politically savvy as Tweety admitted that he had to google the guy. And it doesn’t change the fact that Alinsky is NOT the Left’s hero, icon, scholar, etc., and that the entire Left does not subscribe to Alinsky’s philosophies. The ONLY reason why the teatards even knows the guy existed was because of Glenn Beck’s paranoia spewing on Fox.

Where have I heard language like that before…

“Traitor Jang Song Thaek Executed” blared the headline posted by the state-run news agency about the man who, until recently, had been regarded as the nation’s second-most powerful figure.

The story said that a special military tribunal had been held Thursday against the “traitor for all ages,” who was accused of trying to overthrow the state “by all sorts of intrigues and despicable methods.”

The KCNA report described Jang as “despicable human scum” and “worse than a dog,” and said he had betrayed his party and leader.

Ah. There we go.

re: #14 lawhawk

It’s an apples-to-oranges comparison.

New York City’s economy hasn’t been based on the industrial sector for more than a century - its engine almost exclusively drives from being the financial/banking hub of the US - the import/export industry is a distant second place.
Also, Detroit, and to a lesser extent Cleveland, had a MASSIVE exodus of population when the auto industry left town. With that exodus, the financial base driving the city collapsed. This didn’t happen in the case of NYC. What grew, and eventually fixed New York would not work with any other city in the United States.

It’s that kind of observation that reminds me that the most important division in types of people isn’t black/white, left/right, rich/poor etc.

It’s “people who think it’s OK to call other people dogs” and the rest of us.

If I have any problem with the indictment at this time, it’s that they held off on indicting him until after he’d left office, when there was every indication that they had enough to charge him with a crime months ago.

re: #191 RadicalModerate

It’s an apples-to-oranges comparison.

New York City’s economy hasn’t been based on the industrial sector for more than a century - its engine almost exclusively drives from being the financial/banking hub of the US - the import/export industry is a distant second place.
Also, Detroit, and to a lesser extent Cleveland, had a MASSIVE exodus of population when the auto industry left town. With that exodus, the financial base driving the city collapsed. This didn’t happen in the case of NYC. What grew, and eventually fixed New York would not work with any other city in the United States.

NYC is a bad comparison, but Pittsburgh is not, and the former Steeltown’s economy is humming thanks to high tech medical research and education. It appears Buffalo, NY is trying to go the Pittsburgh route, and Cleveland has Case Western, Cleveland State, and the Cleveland Clinic, so the infrastructure to do such a redevelopment is there for the Forest City. Motown, however, I’m not so sure, especially with UMich being in Ann Arbor.

Neither am I, but this stinks of political expediency, that they didn’t want the indictment and subsequent proceedings to happen in the last months of the election, when any information that might come out in court could have hurt Cucci’s chances. Sorry, but I don’t think you should throw a sheet over political corruption because it might hurt the electoral chances of the bagman.

Wayne State actually does a pretty good job of anchoring that part of Detroit, but you’re right - it’s not the same as having Case Western and Pitt (as well as sundry smaller institutions, though Detroit has some of those too).

Like it or not, Pittsburgh has also benefited (to my mind) from a more diverse population. One of Detroit’s big problems is that it’s “the other” to a lot of non-Detroit Michiganders.

I never heard of him before the teatards turned him into a faux librul icon. Hell, and I’m willing to bet that most people on the left have never heard of him.

I actually experienced some ‘community organizer training’. Alinsky was assigned reading. He was a Chicago guy, so I was serious about his legacy being in the White House.

Alinsky should be a lefty icon, but I agree, he’s more obscure than Hentoff by a long shot.

235 simoom  Tue, Jan 21, 2014 2:04:57pm

Some old GG tweets from back in Nov:

Greenwald is suggesting here that there are parts of Snowden’s bulk document dump, that if published, would damage him in the eyes of the public and subject him to serious new legal jeopardy (including charges of treason — “treason charges are serious”).

In that recently published cryptome e-mail exchange Greenwald wrote something similar:

Anyone who demands that we “release all documents” - or even release large numbers in bulk - is demanding that we violate our agreement with our source, disregard the framework we created when he gave us the documents, jeopardize his interests in multiple ways, and subject him to far greater legal (and other) dangers.

Again, the take away from all of this that there are aspects of both the scale and content of what he stole, that if clearly defined to the public by GG, would severely undermine the painstakingly crafted Snowden mythology.

I agree, but it definitely sounds like this wasn’t a real plane either. :) Look at the stripes on the floor - close to the camera, they’re much further underneath the seats than they are relative to the seats on the far aisle, and I don’t think that can all be explained by perspective. There’s also no room for a third person in that first row on the far side.

Cutting out a seat and distributing the space among the rest would certainly explain why the seats look a hell of a lot bigger.

As incredible as it looks with the huge seats and leg room, I remember a long flight to Japan that was an absolute nightmare because of the smoking. There was no smoking “section,” everybody just smoked in every seat. And I do mean everybody. The whole cabin was filled with cigarette smoke for the entire flight.

297 wrenchwench  Tue, Jan 21, 2014 2:41:18pm

At least airplanes had little blowers to move the air around. Greyhound buses with smoking were the worst. Unless we go international, then Turkish buses with smoking were the worst. In January, so it was cold and nobody would open a window. A LONG bus ride.

Our recent flight back from Tokyo was on the 787. I would have enjoyed having a window seat but because of the clusterfuck that is reserving with a partner airline through a codeshare we didn’t even know if we could sit together until my husband boarded the plane. (This was after they initially couldn’t find my reservation through the electronic checkin.)

The plane itself was really nice; I don’t know for sure if it was the higher cabin pressure or the fact that the flight to Tokyo had been 14 hours but I felt better getting off the plane than I had in a while. There’s a few nice touches - a fold down cupholder on both the table *and* the chair in front of you (so you can use it with the table up or down), and a folding down footrest even in economy. Also, the power plug worked (a plus compared to the first flight) but the airplane wiring managed to mess with the touchscreen on my Surface so I spent half the flight trying to troubleshoot without having access to the Internet. (It works fine again now that it is not plugged in to the airplane.)

I preferred the train back in the day. On a longish trip, a visit to the dining car, never used the sleeping cars, though. It was pretty civilized. Don’t know what it’s like today.

This is a photo of the dining car on the New York Central line—a full breakfast during WWII cost 85 cents. The last time I had a meal on a train was in the late 70s, and it was more expensive, of course, but far better than airline food.

When I was teaching bike mechanics to some Boeing engineers, they told me about a project they worked on to get a little exhaust hole to remove smoke, but not passengers, at 30,000 feet. They were doing it for French customers, because apparently banning smoking for people who eat all the butter they want was still impossible in the 80s.

It might actually be the humidity. Because the thing is composite and corrosion is a much smaller concern, they’re able to keep the relative humidity much higher in the 787, compared to other commercial aircraft.

Because it’s composite, they’re also able to keep the cabin pressure higher - I think the number is 8000ft instead of 10000ft. I’d need more test cases though before I can say for sure that it’s a real effect and not just a combination of other factors. :)

Former Gov. Bob McDonnell, wife charged in gift scandal

wtvr.com

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Less than two weeks after leaving the governor’s mansion in Richmond, former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife have been indicted in connection to their relationship with political donor Jonnie Williams Sr.

“The former governor was indicted on 13 counts including Honest-Services Wire Fraud, Obtaining Property under Color of Official Right and making False Statement.

“Former First Lady Maureen McDonnell was indicted on similar charges plus Obstruction of Official Proceedings. The McDonnells’ are summoned to appear in court for a bond hearing on Friday, at 10 a.m.”

Wendy Davis pushes back against smears

We’re not surprised by Greg Abbott’s campaign attacks on the personal story of my life as a single mother who worked hard to get ahead. But they won’t work, because my story is the story of millions of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you’re young, alone and a mother.

I’ve always been open about my life not because my story is unique, but because it isn’t.

The truth is that at age 19, I was a teenage mother living alone with my daughter in a trailer and struggling to keep us afloat on my way to a divorce. And I knew then that I was going to have to work my way up and out of that life if I was going to give my daughter a better life and a better future and that’s what I’ve done. I am proud of where I came from and I am proud of what I’ve been able to achieve through hard work and perseverance. And I guarantee you that anyone who tries to say otherwise hasn’t walked a day in my shoes.

That’s one classy response, right there. Very steady, very measured, and placing a boot square in Abbott’s ass. Good for her.
