Mike Huckabee Says Women Use Birth Control Because They “Cannot Control Their Libido”

What right wing war on women?
Wingnuts • Views: 18,027

Another excellent moment in Republican rebranding today, and yet another wonderful example of GOP backward-speak, as religious fanatic Mike Huckabee tells an RNC conference that women who use birth control are being tricked by Democrats into believing they can’t control their libido.

“I think it’s time Republicans no longer accept listening to the Democrats talk about a ‘war on women,’” Huckabee said during a speech at the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting in Washington. “The fact is the Republicans don’t have a war on women, they have a war for women, to empower them to be something other than victims of their gender.”

Huckabee said Democrats rely on women believing they are weaker than men and in need of government handouts, including the contraception mandate in Obamacare.

Huckabee said Democrats tell women “they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government.”

Behind this absurd, distorted argument is a realization that the right has a huge problem with their attitude toward women’s rights — but absolutely no intention to deal honestly with it. Huckabee tried to cast his misogynistic statement as a smear against Democrats, but actually revealed his own thinking.

No, Mr. Huckabee. You do not want to empower me to be more than a “victim of my gender.” You want to keep me that way, and so does the rest of the Republican party.

The GOP war on women is crapping on a majority of the voters. If this gets seen for what it really is by enough people, the damage will be much greater than from the GOP’s abuse of various minorities.

The entire GOP view of women is of them as victims. They’re victims of their hormones, victims of their emotions, victims of the media, victims of “progressives,” always victims who simply must be coddled and told they’re not as “good” as men are and should just accept “their place.” And “empowerment”? The GOP says that it’s wrong to view women as equals, wrong to say they can do the same jobs as men, wrong to say they can succeed in male occupations, and it’s wrong to think that women have any lot in life besides “mother” and “homemaker.”

And Republicans are perfectly willing to stand in the way of access to contraception even when it is not being ‘provided by the government’ (because somehow having the insurance you pay for cover the medications you and your doctor decide are right for you is BAD and EVIL) because SEX.

I have been on birth control since I was 12, for medical reasons. It did not turn me into a raging slut. And yet Republicans support people who would refuse to dispense my medication to me because they think it is immoral. Or it might cause an abortion. Or whatever bullshit reason they have that boils down to “could enable a woman to embrace a role other than the one we dictate for her.”

That is not empowerment, Mr. Huckabee.

The women are victims up until they don’t dress right and thus bring duress unto themselves due to males who are victims due to having no self-control and resistance to temptation.

So it is apparently victims you need to protect so as to prevent them corrupting other males? Or something like that.

That’s someone who’s pulling quotes straight out of “Victorian period pieces” that women had urges that ought to be repressed and limited as much as possible.

Never mind that women use birth control because they don’t want to have kids until they’re, you know, actually ready to bear the responsibility of having them. It’s personal responsibility at its most essential. It’s the choice to recognize that you are or aren’t ready for caring for someone else (taking into account social, economic, and other factors).

It’s the property model of women. For centuries, the legal theory relating to rape in the western world was that it was mainly a crime against the woman’s male owner (e.g., father, husband, brother).

So-cons would like to go back to this model.

Most people think the West has been too passive

Until this week the reaction of the U.S. and other Western countries to the events in Ukraine was very low-key. Many protesters do not really believe in that the EU and the U.S. are ready to help Ukrainians uphold democratic values. Additionally, there were rumors in the local press that America agreed to give Ukraine to Putin in exchange for increasing U.S. influence in Syria and other hot spots. The first shift was detected only on Jan. 22, when the United States finally announced visa sanctions against the officials involved in violence against peaceful demonstrators in Ukraine’s capital after the death of several people in the Kyiv rally. The EU has just issued diplomatic statements, saying they will not impose any sanctions yet.

It is true that the GOP does not execute women out of hand for seeking to become educated.

It is also true that the so-con elements in the GOP are not in complete control of either the party or the country, so what they would really do if they had all the power they wanted is not on display in the GOP’s current policy positions.

Huckabee said Democrats rely on women believing they are weaker than men and in need of government handouts, including the contraception mandate in Obamacare.

The contraception mandate is in Obamacare because it makes actuarial sense for it to be. Regardless of whether the insuree is poor and most of their coverage is paid for in subsidies or if they’re wealthy and pay for it all themselves the best deal from all parties financial perspective is for the plan to cover contraceptives.

At first not covering contraceptives might strike one as more expensive, if they’re an idiot or haven’t spent one second thinking about the attendant consequences of making such coverage more difficult for people to get. However in the real world not only is pregnancy very risky and expensive, but contraceptives are prophylactic against more than just pregnancy. BC pills help control chronic and debilitating conditions like endometriosis and ovarian tumors, preventing a crisis down the road that can lead to total hysterectomies and cancers.

True, I think they fall under the “quality of life” bit, as in men need to be able to fuck in order to live fulfilling lives, but a drug that allows a woman to regulate hormones to alleviate some conditions and prevent others must be rigorously controlled because it might allow uninhibited sexy time.

Also, I continue to be dumbfounded that contraception remains such a problem for these neanderthals. I can understand the moral objection to abortion, but contraception? Especially when one of the best ways to lower the abortion rate is to make contraceptives universally available?

It really shows that the “sanctity of life” rhetoric is a red herring. The goal is to make sure women remain chattel of men.

It’s harder to get a woman to submit when she can choose when to get pregnant.

re: #145 EPR-radar

Conservatives think that having sex is consenting to remain pregnant for the next 9 months.

Other people don’t share this delusion.

They also think that marriage is an immediate blanket agreement to sex and pregnancy whenever the husband wants it. And she can’t raise her voice or object, since her job is to “voluntarily submit” to the man. And heaven help her if she wants an education and a career. Then she’s just evil. But if she has no education and no means of supporting herself and her husband leaves her or dies, she better not go on welfare to raise those kids. Then she’s just a moocher.

As I said — they hate women. Why a woman would willingly vote for these people is beyond me.

re: #138 klys

It’s simpler than that, though.

Name for me a generic classification of drug prescribed to men where a prescription from a doctor is not enough to prove “medical necessity” and they have to jump through hoops to show that it has a “medical purpose.”

I will note that even erectile dysfunction drugs do not get the same scrutiny as birth control, even though that’s all about enabling sexytimes.

That’s fine, but at the same time erectile drugs aren’t needed to treat medically life threatening conditions. A person could argue that they treat depression though, which can be fatal.

In any event both men and women face increased scrutiny when being prescribed high potency pain killers like Dilaudid. Not directly on point I know.

I caution against making the response too simple though. I like the actuarial costs argument because it directly addresses the most common charge being leveled by conservatives who oppose government spending on birth control. The fact is that such spending saves money over the predictable consequences of non coverage. Not to say that the equality argument isn’t a potent one, just that it addresses an issue that is historically over-easy for the opposition to dismiss.

True, I think they fall under the “quality of life” bit, as in men need to be able to fuck in order to live fulfilling lives, but a drug that allows a woman to regulate hormones to alleviate some conditions and prevent others must be rigorously controlled because it might allow uninhibited sexy time.

I can respectfully disagree with someone whose opposition to abortion is consistent with an overall disinclination to kill (i.e., anti-war, anti death penalty etc.)

The US right wing hardly meets this definition, since it enthusiastically embraces all forms of death and carnage, while simultaneously bleating about a “right to life” of a zygote/embryo/fetus. This position get mocked mercilessly.

As always, I wonder about the quality of these people’s marriages. Isn’t sex better with a happy, willing, fulfilled partner? Don’t both husbands and wives enjoy sex more when they don’t have to worry about unwanted pregnancy?

I specifically used the term ‘husbands and wives’ because, as much as I disagree with them, they probably don’t want unmarried couples to have fun with sex.

If you’re poor, you shouldn’t have kids, because then they’re just mooching off the system.

No one should use birth control ever. Especially not if they can’t afford to pay for it themselves.

Therefore, if you’re poor, you should never have sex. Ever. Even if you’re married.

@jaketapper #AskSnowden Under what conditions would you agree to return to the U.S.?

Returning to the US, I think, is the best resolution for the government, the public, and myself, but it’s unfortunately not possible in the face of current whistleblower protection laws, which through a failure in law did not cover national security contractors like myself.

The hundred-year old law under which I’ve been charged, which was never intended to be used against people working in the public interest, and forbids a public interest defense. This is especially frustrating, because it means there’s no chance to have a fair trial, and no way I can come home and make my case to a jury.

Maybe when Congress comes together to end the programs the PCLOB just announced was illegal, they’ll reform the Whistleblower Protection Act, and we’ll see a mechanism for all Americans, no matter who they work for, to get a fair trial.

Sigh. I really wonder if freedom from fear of pregnancy results in a huge increase in sexual activity. It seems to me people throughout history have spent a great deal of time having extramarital sex. Now we just talk about it more. Back when that first pregnancy usually resulted in marriage, but who knows how faithful either partner was?

Sex isn’t just random genital pleasuring-you can do that by yourself. There is generally an emotional response as well and I don’t think it is just the fear of pregnancy that makes people want to settle down with one person-even if it doesn’t turn out to be forever.

2. Review: NSA Data Sweep Illegal

The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, which was tasked with reviewing the NSA’s surveillance program, has declared the program illegal. “The … bulk telephone records program lacks a viable legal foundation,” the report said, and that it threatens civil liberties and has “only limited value.” The Board also recommended that the government end the program.

Even if you did get Snowden home to face trial, I think that conviction would be a real uphill climb when his defense could pointing to stuff like this (Hey…you wouldn’t know about gub’mint illegal stuff if he didn’t spill the beans!). I am not at all sure you could ever get a unanimous jury vote to convict except maybe for a single “compromise” offense that would get him a couple of years. (I have seen that in the past with some high profile cases where you got a single token conviction out a laundry list of 50 or more charges). This is one where voir dire could really, really shape the entire trial.

Even though I dislike high school sports, I do believe there is a sampling artifact in play, where a disproportionate share of the high school sports stories that make the news are screw-ups of one kind or another.

However, something like Steubenville cannot be regarded as a mere sampling artifact. There was/is something deeply wrong there, and there is no reason to believe that Steubenville is unique.

Great, the idiots in Boise just passed a bill requiring SS couples married in another State to file individual tax returns. It now heads to the Senate were it will probably also pass and our Idiot Governor will sign it into law knowing full well that it will be challenged in the Courts.

House Passes New Rule Banning Same-Sex Couples from Filing Joint Idaho Taxes

BOISE- A new rule banning same-sex couples legally married elsewhere from filing joint Idaho income tax returns now moves to the Senate after the Republican dominated House passed the new policy 57-12.

This is the sort of thing I’ve been expecting, the one that’ll force the whole gay marriage issue into the supreme court under ‘full faith and credit’.

It’s that clause that broke Loving v Virginia.

Readout of Vice President Biden’s Call with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych

Vice President Biden called Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych today to urge an immediate de-escalation in the standoff between protesters and security forces in downtown Kyiv. The Vice President urged President Yanukovych to take steps to end violence and to meaningfully address the legitimate concerns of peaceful protesters, stressing the importance of the ongoing dialogue with the opposition and the need for genuine compromise as the only solution to the crisis. The Vice President underscored that freedoms of assembly and expression are fundamental pillars of a democratic society and must be protected. While emphasizing that violence by any side is not acceptable, the Vice President underscored that only the government of Ukraine can ensure a peaceful end to the crisis and further bloodshed would have consequences for Ukraine’s relationship with the United States. Vice President Biden encouraged President Yanukovych to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Women’s reasons for seeking and accepting government assistance is a fairly complex matter that cannot be mansplained down to a paragraph or two.

The same could be said about the GOP’s positions on birth control, abortion, rape, equal pay for women, and a whole host of other issues, yet they insist on mansplaining anyway.

Gohmert: Gov’t Tries To ‘Lure’ Single Moms Into ‘Servitude’ With Welfare

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Thursday said that the federal government uses welfare to “lure” women into “servitude.”

“We need to encourage and incentivize young women, not declare war on them by leading them into ruts like the Democrats did. You want to see who cares? It’s the people that try to help them reach their potential, not lure them into servitude away from it,” Gohmert said on “Fox and Friends,” while arguing that welfare checks make women dependent on the government. “So, the problem is the government, not those single moms.”

Another “What War on Women?” message from RNC Rebrand Inc.

re: #323 klys

I’ll agree he’s wrong there.

I hope that’s not the only thing you see wrong with his statement.

Just for clarity, let’s look at Huckabee’s statement again. (Text is from the article linked above.)

“If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it,” Huckabee said. “Let’s take that discussion all across America.”

What’s prompted this discussion on a national scale? Oh right, the “contraception mandate” in the ACA. What’s this “contraception mandate”? Well, Wikipedia says:

On January 20, 2012, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a (then) final rule of an August 1, 2011 interim final rule on health insurance coverage with no cost sharing for FDA-approved contraceptives and contraceptive services (including female sterilization) for women of reproductive age if prescribed by health care providers, as part of women’s preventive health services guidelines adopted by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for the Affordable Care Act based on recommendations by the independent Institute of Medicine (IOM)’s July 19, 2011 report Clinical Preventive Services for Women: Closing the Gaps.

The “government assistance” they’re crying about here is the mandate that insurance companies include coverage for contraceptives. Think about that. Apparently government assistance is required to make sure that insurance plans cover women’s preventative health services. (And, government assistance apparently has a pretty big definition here.)

And that’s not even touching the disgusting attitude he exhibits towards women.

The protesters could overthrow the government; I would never rule that out, especially if they go into that whole “victory or death” mindset.

However, that being said, what the Russians would do is quite another matter. If a pro-Western government came to power in the wake of a successful - and violent - revolution, Russia might choose to flex its military might by invading Ukraine.

The only hope a pro-Western government would have would be to immediately commence negotiations on NATO accession talks - and I’m talking while the ruins are still smoldering. That might be sufficient to ward off Putin, but that would be an insufferable humiliation to the Russians, and they’d not soon forget it.

There are ways to say clearly “I don’t support attacks on women’s rights,” although I admit they might lead into the discussion of at what point does the cognitive dissonance get to you (because I do give you the credit of the doubt to believe that you don’t support that view of women).

Dark, as near as I can tell your claim the GOP doesn’t have a ‘war with women’ boils down to definitions of war, not disagreement that the GOP’s platforms and leadership propose policies that tend to restrict women’s rights.

If I’ve got that right, then while I sympathize with your plight I’m going to call you a fool. “War” ceased meaning what you seem to think several decades ago. War as metaphor started happening in the 1930s with Hoover’s ‘War on Crime’. After 80+ years there’s no stuffing that genie back into the bottle.

If I’ve got it wrong, that what you’re really saying is that there isn’t an attempt to restrict the rights on the part of the whole and it’s just individuals being idiots, then I’m going to say you’re stuck in the No True Scotsman’s fallacy. If multiple leaders, and more significantly the publicly adopted plans of the GOP (at national, state, and local levels across the nation) make the intent to restrict the rights, then it’s a party problem.

377 Justanotherhuman  Thu, Jan 23, 2014 3:02:29pm

Oops.

Impressive. I’m reminded of the Conrad Black case, where Conrad Black was sent up the river for compensating himself illegally as owner of a US newspaper.

Here D’Souza has apparently found a way to make US election contributions illegally. Post Citizens United, that takes real talent, similar to the talent needed to perform illegal executive compensation.

Given that there are legal ways to do pretty much anything when it comes to money in politics (or executive compensation), one wonders if the law breaking happens for the sheer pleasure of ‘getting away with it’.

Apparently the GOP thinks the primary season in 2012 was too long, so it looks like that will be considerably shortened.

Can’t imagine why.

The 2012 primary was chaotic, with states moving their dates to “jump the queue”. Florida’s move to less than week after South Carolina made the Palmetto State’s early primary status nearly worthless. Imposing tighter rules this time around is a good idea. One thing to note is that the rules ensure a race that will last till March 15th (which will be Super Tuesday) but which will likely end or be greatly winnowed on that day.

Gohmert: Gov’t Tries To ‘Lure’ Single Moms Into ‘Servitude’ With Welfare

Another “What War on Women?” message from RNC Rebrand Inc.

Dear Congressman Gohmert:

Here. Educate yourself.

New York Daily News: Airlines get $2.7 billion in taxpayer-backed loans while using poorly paid workers

In October, for example, skycaps complained to state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman — charging that Airway affiliate Allstate Maintenance regularly paid them less than the $5.50-per-hour minimum wage required for all workers who are regularly tipped. Some workers were making as little as $4.15 per hour. The matter is pending; Airway did not return calls.

And…

Thousands of local airport workers making minimum wage with no benefits

Wendy Arellano reached her breaking point on a sweltering day last June.

Standing in the checkout line at her local supermarket, the Queens mother of two kept her eyes glued to the cashier as her items were rung up: three ground beef patties, salt, a small bag of rice, one cucumber.

Money was frighteningly tight for Arellano. She was working as a cabin cleaner at LaGuardia Airport — a job that paid the then-minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

She first heard about the position from a friend who used to work for United Airlines. He told her it must pay well; all of the airport workers he knew made good money.

But Arellano’s first weekly paycheck totaled $160. Bills started piling up. Soon, she was struggling to cover the $600-a-month room she shared with her two daughters, Melanie, 12, and Emily, 8.

Arellano started pawning her gold jewelry. When she ran out of jewelry, she sold whatever else she could.

She went on Medicaid, but her application for food stamps was denied.

On this day, Arellano was planning on feeding her girls a dinner of hamburger patties and cucumber salad.

The bill for the ingredients was $13.62. The cashier swiped Arellano’s bank card, but its balance was zero.

She broke down while rushing home with her two girls and returned in tears with just enough quarters, dimes and pennies to cover the bill.

There’s your servitude, you sorry-assed, $174,000-per-year-earning, worthless piece of shit.

(My apologies for quoting extensively from the second article. I thought it necessary to drive home the point.)

“victims of their gender”. Interesting choice of words. I believe he is drawing on a biblical mysogeny about women’s intrinsically evil and seductive nature. Also seems that much like he believes homosexuals can be cured or trained to abstain through the power of christ, women too can overcome their innate evil by learning to control their libido (which I assume can be done through accepting Christ). Palin and Bachmann are going to have a tough time delivering women voters for these fucktards.

An RW acquaintance told me that radio hate-jock Sean Hannity (think Rush LImbaugh without the charm) has been routinely calling NYC mayor Bill de Blasio a communist. I was incredulous since the little I know about de Blasio makes him seem an unlikely Red. I
listened to Hannity’s show today to fact-check the report. Sure enough, Hannity matter-of-factly referred to de Blasio as “the communist mayor of New York” and repeatedly called him “comrade de Blasio.”
Again, the really striking thing about this was its matter of fact tone, as though de Blasio’s communism were either an established fact or at least a credible claim. It was not facetious or satirical or anything of the kind. It was the same tone one would use in referring to Fidel Castro as a communist.
De Blasio’s bio shows some definite leftward leanings, but nothing to tar him with the commie brush unless it would be his support for the Nicaraguan Sandinistas in the 1980s. Reagan cultists like Hannity take it for granted that the Sandinistas were all hard core Stalinists, and their American supporters fellow travelers if not KGB influence agents. In fact, the Sandinistas were much more broadly based than that, and their supporters more so. A very broad spectrum of American opinion opposed Reagan’s gleefully bloodthirsty support for the Contra insurgency, including many members of Congress.

Getting into a discussion about if there is or is not a “Republican War on Women” is a colossal loser for me. No matter what I say, I’ll get yelled at and downdinged. The smart move is to not engage that topic.

re: #362 klys

There are ways to say clearly “I don’t support attacks on women’s rights,” although I admit they might lead into the discussion of at what point does the cognitive dissonance get to you (because I do give you the credit of the doubt to believe that you don’t support that view of women).

This issue doesn’t go away just because you don’t want to deal with it/it doesn’t affect you personally; it represents a real challenge that the Republican party needs to deal with. See: rebranding.

I’m sorry, but did I see anywhere Dark said he didn’t support some of the GOPs thinking on women’s rights? All he said was he wasn’t going to talk about it for fear of getting jumped on. There may be a message in what he isn’t saying. He already is admitting his view would oppose many others.

Agreed, but I’m doing my best to assume good faith here, since I feel that’s more likely to lead to a fruitful discussion.

Or not, as the case may be, but maybe some of my words were better heard instead of just being dismissed as an attack.

I respectfully submit you may want to ponder why this is so on this topic, as well as others.

A meta-discussion, not necessarily about the topic at hand, but the fact that you seem to have several topics you’ve said that you cannot engage (IIRC), no matter what you say.
