GOHMERT! The Government “Lures Single Women into Servitude” With Welfare

Life with Gohmert
Wingnuts • Views: 16,821

Loveable Louie was on Fox & Friends today, expounding on a favorite wingnut talking point: making idiotic comparisons between things they don’t like and slavery, though GOHMERT! was careful to call it “servitude.”

And like Louie, I am so grateful for Fox News, that only beacon of truth in the vast liberal media wasteland, shedding the light of truth on the devastation that is welfare.

Well done Fox, and well done Louie!

Video at the link.

“We need to encourage and incentivize young women, not declare war on them by leading them into ruts like the Democrats did. You want to see who cares? It’s the people that try to help them reach their potential, not lure them into servitude away from it,” Gohmert said on “Fox and Friends,” while arguing that welfare checks make women dependent on the government. “So, the problem is the government, not those single moms.”

Gohmert was defending remarks he made on the House floor earlier in January about fraud, during which he said women had children in order to receive welfare checks.

“I heard the story over and over and over, how as a young girl in high school she was bored with high school and someone suggested, ‘Well, why don’t you just drop out of high school and have a baby and then the government will send you a check?’” he said on the House floor. “It began to really eat away with me that in the ’60s the federal government, desiring to help poor moms who were dealing with deadbeat dads that weren’t helping, decided, ‘We’ll help, we’ll give a check for every child you can have out of wedlock.’”

=====

“Literally, Brian, thank God for Fox News,” Gohmert said. “You give the truth out. You get actually what was said.”

I’m with Louie here. I’ve been hearing that same story for decades now. It’s just that I’ve never seen any evidence that it’s actually true.

“We need to encourage and incentivize young women, not declare war on them by leading them into ruts like the Democrats did. You want to see who cares? It’s the people that try to help them reach their potential, not lure them into servitude away from it.”

Things that help support young women, particularly young mothers:
- assisting with the cost of food and supplies
- helping provide childcare facilities at a reasonable price to enable them to prepare for a career
- tuition assistance

Actual Republican outreach:
- calling people who receive government assistance moochers
- attacking a woman who went to law school to better support her children as a bad mother

Yes it does appear that they have their orders. it is testament to how far gone these guys are, they honestly believed that this strategy of painting the Democrats as enslaving women as victims of their own gender and welfare would be effective.
So now the party of personal responsibility is absolving the 3 fictitious women in the “stories he heard” who had children to get a cheque and blaming it on the Democrats. Seems like a good strategy.///

18 klys  Thu, Jan 23, 2014 3:42:15pm

At this point, I don’t understand how anyone who cares about the women in their lives can vote Republican.

Unless “caring about women” = “dictating to women what they can and can’t do, and punishing them if they deviate.” Then I totally get it (and that probably describes a depressing portion of the population.)

Meanwhile in TX, the horror story of the dead woman kept on life support because of an early term pregnancy keeps on going.

For that special GOP screw job flavor of the day, it would appear that the family is going to get stuck with the bill for all this forced and unwanted treatment (the life-loving state of TX certainly isn’t likely to foot the bill).

Personal responsibility means that you don’t have children until you can afford them.

And you can’t use contraception.*

Therefore, no sex unless you can afford children.

Sex is for the upper middle class/wealthy only.**

*Note, none of the rules about social conduct actually apply to the wealthy, who are allowed to use contraception anyway because they can pay for it all by themselves and therefore don’t need “government assistance” (defined as requiring companies to issue policies that cover reasonable preventative health measures) to get their birth control.

Frankly, if the protesters are serious about winning, they just need to go for it. Like I said, in a revolutionary situation, it’s do or die. And Klitschko is a boxer, not a revolutionary.

A revolutionary would have told Yanukovych, “If you capitulate now, I assure you, your death will be quick and merciful.” Or he’d give orders to his followers along the lines of Lenin: “Hang a few rich bastards so that everyone can see them. Be merciless to the enemies of the Revolution.”

And that’s the entire “negotiation strategy”.

True enough; about the only rich fanatic I can think of was Osama bin Laden.

Levi Johnson denied split custody of son Tripp as judge sides with Bristol Palin

An Alaskan judge has denied Levi Johnson split custody of his child with Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol.

The tumultuous relationship between the former vice presidential candidate’s daughter and her former fiancé has landed their son Tripp in Bristol’s care for much of his life, but Johnson wanted to change that.

Johnson, 23, filed to have equal custody of the now-4-year-old boy but that petition was thrown out by Judge Gregory Heath- who was appointed to the bench by Sarah Palin when she was governor in 2009- who mandated that Tripp remain in the primary custody of his mother Bristol, 23.

Yanukovych has basically learned the lessons of the fall of the Soviet Bloc; with the exception of Romania, in each case the Communist leadership of the respective countries basically said, “Fuck it - the gig is up” when confronted by mass protests in the streets of their cities.

I think Yanukovych is determined not to do the same.

I’ve seen this phenomenon personally as the news coverage we get in Canada is considerably less politicized, less glamorized and more world oriented than American coverage, a fact my American wife commented on when she came to visit me while we were dating.

Quite frankly I find most U.S. news either too politicized or too shallow or too celebrity driven.

Evidently a university student who was in the attempted Cherkasy takeover was injured critically when someone threw a flower pot from a 4th floor and it hit her on the head. This is a Google translation from Ukrainian, in Pravda (Ukraine).

“During the Cherkasy Regional State Administration in the assault suffered a student room of a local university, which already operated. Her condition is estimated as critical

“It was on his Facebook page said the former mayor Sergey Cherkas Odarich.

“The girl on the head thrown flower pot on the 4th floor.

“Talked with doctors. Operated Man. Condition Critical. Least a week to be unconscious. Dynamics on it will be possible only after two days,” - he said.”

Real reporting costs money, and the marketplace does not reward this effort in any reasonable way any more.

The transition to no original reporting may make sense as a business decision.

There is an ideological factor in play as well (although this is not a complete explanation of the decay of the news industry).

Climate change and wealth concentration are the two 800 pound gorillas in terms of long term news stories, but the powers that be that own the media by and large aren’t interested in any coverage thereof.

Bezos, or Bozos as I liked to call him, was the anti-celebrity on Slashdot about 12 years ago for his ludicrous “One Click Patent.”

What I learned then about him is that he has zero creativity and like many wealthy people is a pure opportunist, untroubled by ethics. His organization brought the entire notion of patent abuse to my attention. I just kind of figure a guy that lazy, well, he’s only capable of so much. His newspaper will fail, because he only has visions of himself getting checks, as far as I can tell. That is the limit of his capabilities.
