The Ineffable Allen West: Democrats Try to Win Women’s Votes by ‘Talking From the Waist Down’

Another great moment in Republican rebranding

You probably thought Mike Huckabee’s attempt to mansplain birth control to women was pretty ham-handed Neanderthal stuff, but then along comes the ineffable Allen West to show you how misogyny’s really done: West: ‘The Left Tries to Win the Women’s Vote by Talking From the Waist Down’.

Asserting that Democrats want the government to be “the sugar daddy” and replace men, West said Democrats have been “caught guilty as always” and are responding by attacking Huckabee. He then went on to claim that the Left remains utterly silent when women like Malala Yousafzai are abused and attacked by the Taliban before declaring that “I’m going to be very blunt: the Left tries to win the women’s vote by talking from the waist down.”

Amazingly sleazy of West to try to co-opt the Malala case. I saw plenty of liberals who were horrified by that incident and said so.

This guy and Rand Paul both try to hold up Democrats as talking to women in a certain way. What they seemingly don’t recognize is that at least half of those Democrats talking about women ARE women.

We don’t want a ‘strong male image in the government’. We want a whole lot more female images in the government.

11 The Ghost of a Flea  Mon, Jan 27, 2014 1:14:28pm

As a licensed downthereologist, Allen West understands that it’s inappropriate to talk to women from the waist down.

After all, those ovaries actually belong to Proximate Penis Haver (PPH), and there’s absolutely no reason for women to talk about reproduction.

Also…sluts.

This is of a piece with their view of Democrats and blacks. In both cases, they see “The Democrats” as telling the women or blacks what to think, rather than blacks and women both being a substantial chunk of the Democratic Party and telling THE PARTY how to think.

IOW, they respond like authoritarians who see the mass of people as pliable sheep.

The GOP lost control of the message over the Tea party: they were too afraid of being shouted down at Town Hall meetings to have the nerve to distance themselves from these kinds of statements and state that they do not represent the party’s ideology or platform.

In doing so, they started an attention-grabbing race to the bottom to see who can come up with the most outrageous soundbyte, basically anything to “annoy a liberal” and garner nods from the extreme wing of the base.

And the race to the bottom is only just warming up…

re: #23 Kragar

Of course, believing women should have the option to hold out for love assumes that it’s possible for a man to love a woman. As was clear in his horrible misreading of The Love Affairs of Nathanial P.*, Douthat sort of thinks women are foolish nitwits who are holding out for an impossible fantasy if we think that a man could, you know, love us. Men have no real use for women except as a form of sexual release, the logic goes, so if a man has the choice between loving a woman and having sex with a bunch of different women, it’s no contest, because the former isn’t possible, really. So women need to grow up and give up hope of real love, and and force a shotgun marriage to a man that resents you for stealing his freedom and probably cheats because of it.

I threw up in my mouth, more than a little bit.

The “Barbie” moniker is offensive when applied to Palin; it is no less offensive here. It’s the objectification of women, and treating them as something less than capable of the job.

Palin’s shown herself to be incapable of handling the job and rigors of governance. Her character (and lack of same) not to mention poor judgment shows that the nation made the right choice in not electing McCain to the Presidency (making her VP).

Wendy Davis still has to prove herself for governing Texas, but standing up to the offensive tactics by the Texas GOP in trying to ram through abortion restrictions by any means necessary shows she has the courage of her character and good judgment to know right from wrong.

This seems apt and on-topic:

The “War on Women” Is About Public Policy

The “war on women” that is alleged to exist is a war of public policy. Specifically one in which conservative ideas are unfavorable to women.

Take, for example, the Affordable Care Act. Compared to men, women earn lower incomes and have higher average health care expenses. The Affordable Care Act taxes high-earning people (mostly men) and subsidizes low-earning people (mostly women) while also specifically restricting the ability of insurance companies to charge higher premiums to women. On retirement security, Republican policy is tilted in favor of tax benefits for people with investment income (mostly men) while Democrats love Social Security which is especially beneficial to unusually long-lived people (mostly women). Democrats want to make it easier for women to win lawsuits about gender pay discrimination while Republicans want to make it harder for them to do so. Democrats want to invest in the future by hiring lots of preschool teachers (mostly women, and a big help to people with child care responsibilities—i.e. also mostly women) while Republicans want to invest in the future with reduced marginal tax rates for high income individuals (mostly men).

re: #46 The Ghost of a Flea

This seems apt and on-topic:

The “War on Women” Is About Public Policy

This one is good too:

What Rand Paul doesn’t understand about the ‘war on women’

[…]

Paul’s remarks highlight Republicans’ ongoing difficulty with not just in countering Democratic attacks on matters related to gender, but in understanding what the problem is in the first place.

First, Paul’s statistics regarding women in the legal and medical professions are plainly off. Paul began defending his stance on the “war on woman” by pointing to his own family. “I have a niece at Cornell vet school, and 85% of the young people there are women. In law school, 60% are women. In med school, 55%. My younger sister is an OB-GYN with six kids and doing great. You know, I don’t see so much that women are downtrodden; I see women rising up and doing great things. And in fact, I worry about our young men sometimes because I think that women really are outcompeting the men in our world,” he said.

Women make up less than half of enrollees at law schools, according to the American Bar Association, and are way underrepresented on the federal bench. The percentage of women in medical school is also less than 50%.

Whatever you think of the Democrats’ political framing, the “war on women” has never been primarily about individual politicians’ sleazy behavior towards women. Men in power behaving badly is a relatively bipartisan phenomenon. Democrats’ attacks on Republicans for waging a “war on women” is about the Republican Party’s policy agenda, one that includes weakening workplace protections against discrimination, forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term, carving out religious exceptions to insurance regulations that compel companies to cover reproductive health, and opposing legislative measures to combat sexual assault.

That was their long-term goal, but some of these guys are a bit overzealous in implementing everything at once, and that will be their undoing.

In the end, we have to be grateful for goons like Todd Aikin for making it clear to women that his views on “legitimate rape” are perfectly consistent with GOP policy, the party establishemnt just wanted to formulate it a bit differently, at least until after they’d won…

This. It’s about moralism and their discomfort with women’s sexuality.

Women shouldn’t have abortions because they should refrain from having sex. They shouldn’t need contraception because they should refrain from having sex. I would add one addendum: they believe women shouldn’t be having sex because only men should initiate sex, and express sexual desire, and that a woman’s sexuality exists only in reference to her husband.

How quaint patriarchal.

And then you have Ross Douthat saying that women lost power in relationships by gaining control over becoming pregnant, and that back when they DIDN’T have that control, they could force a horny, unprepared man to marry them, solving all their problems in one night of passion.

79 TedStriker  Mon, Jan 27, 2014 2:12:00pm

re: #62 Mattand

He then went on to claim that the Left remains utterly silent when women like Malala Yousafzai are abused and attacked by the Taliban before declaring that “I’m going to be very blunt: the Left tries to win the women’s vote by talking from the waist down.”

Coming from the guy who represents the party trying regulate women from the waist down.

re: #63 wrenchwench

And corpses, if pregnant.

It’s fucking hilarious when RWNJ fucknuts like West try to make the argument that “the Left” panders to women about the freedom of when and how they can use their ladybits, when said RWNJs have no problems that I know of with men using their manbits however they damn well please, whenever they please, the women involved be damned.

Just look at the convergence of modern “conservatives”, modern “libertarians”, and the “men’s rights” activists.

80 Justanotherhuman  Mon, Jan 27, 2014 2:12:06pm

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t about female “superiority” or hating men, it’s just life in all its basics. After all, I have sons, a grandson, great-grandsons and love them all. But—

West would be surprised to know that the area below the waist on women is the “command post” for bringing life into the world and women make that decision. West wouldn’t even be here except for his mother doing the same thing women do—having sex, getting pregnant and having the baby. Did that make her a slut? Wasn’t that her decision to have him? She could have chosen differently. And isn’t that the real point they’re trying to make? That they resent that kind of natural power? That they don’t have the real power that women do in bringing human life into the world, or not, to have that choice? Women are not a monolithic group who do everything the same way—we’re individuals and we make our own choices.

Thus, they must try to control our bodies. It’s just part of their fascist outlook on life, that people must be controlled.

Will these stupid bastards ever learn?

What goes unsaid there is “your husband cheated on you (and therefore you must be a shitty wife/woman) and therefore your criticisms on anyone else’s shitty attitudes towards women are invalid.” Because of course Bill wouldn’t have strayed if he was getting what he needed at home.

///////////////////

I really want to see if the GOP has the balls to criticize her for his actions. There was more than one “conservative” voice back during the scandal giving her hell about not kicking him to the curb, because a “real woman” wouldn’t have stayed married to him for cheating on her.

See, it’s not effective if the only people hooting and hollering, “Yeah” are the ones who wouldn’t change their minds anyway. And it’s not effective if some people, mostly women, look around at the hooting and hollering and quietly decide maybe they need to vote D.

The GOP doesn’t seem to understand that by even discussing the “war on women” they lose the argument. Its one of those things that they cannot even debate without outright lying. In doing so they are not changing anyone’s mind on the issue rather they are bolstering their base and further alienating those they are trying to win over. It is like a bad joke already. The dude has all kinds of question regarding an intern which may have forced him out of office and is now divorced twice. He treats his co-host Mika like crap and it is pretty easy to see why he gets divorces.

I gave that fucker a chance when I happened to catch his show during the budget crisis. At that time he was down of the Republicans pretty much and it gave me a false sense of his being reasonable. Since that time, I find him to be a pathetic preppy unable to act his age and a total excuse maker for anything republic and for his own actions. He also seems to have a real keen hatred for Obama and I think it must have something to do with the fact Obama is President and Joke is not.

By the way, I understand Thomas Roberts has to sit in at Morning Joke from time to time. Has he slashed his wrists yet? I cannot see him and Joke ever getting along at all, and I can’t see Roberts playing along. That has got to be an uneasy situation on so many counts.

The funny thing about democracy is regardless of passion and purity, your vote is still just one vote.

The GOP controls the House, and is within spitting distance of controlling the Senate. They also control the lion’s share of state houses - even in solidly blue states - which solidified their control over the House and allows some truly despicable legislation to pass.

It is effective, even if only preaching to the choir, if it motivates the choir to go out and vote when everyone else doesn’t.

SSL stands for “Secure Sockets Layer” which is a cryptic way of saying the information is encrypted end-to-end — in other words, while being transferred over the web.

So while your data’s on the way back and forth to LGF, it will be protected with very strong public/private key encryption.

Yeah, but that’s the point. SCOTUS could say that 30 days is unconstitutional, but there’s nothing wrong with “reasonable” delays. It’s still a trap. They wrote a bill they KNEW was unconstitutional on its face to figure out where the line exists.

In which one of the giants (*cough*) of right wing pseudo-intellectuals, Rod Dreher, embrace genetic racist Steve Sailer:

Evolution & The Culture War

[… includes an extensive quote of Sailer writing on evolution…]

As Sailer points out, it is perfectly possible to reconcile the spiritual and moral equality of humanity with what science tells us is true about human biological variability. […]

Also, I wrote a while back about the importance of maintaining the concept of forbidden knowledge, that is, things that can be known but should not be known because of what we are likely to do with that knowledge. Unless you believe that plans for building atomic bombs and how to poison a city’s water supply with ricin should be distributed freely on the Internet, then you too believe in the concept of forbidden knowledge. If you believe the government has no right to vacuum up your private information, then you believe that some things shouldn’t be known because of what use we are likely to make of the power that knowledge gives us. My point is simply that all of us believe that some facts are too dangerous to be known; they are like the Ring Of Power, in that the temptation to abuse them is too great for our natures to bear.

Admittedly, this puts me in a tight spot. Am I saying that we should ignore reality? I suppose I am. One of the things that keeps drawing me to Steve Sailer’s writing is that his beliefs on human biodiversity sometimes lead him to point out inconvenient truths about ideologies informing our common life. I don’t read him often enough to say for sure, but I take Sailer’s general viewpoint to be that many of our contemporary follies are due to our ideological inability to face the scientific facts of human biodiversity. Though I’m a theist, and therefore one who believes that all life is ultimately of divine origin, I also believe that evolution is the best available explanation for how life in all its diversity came to be. I don’t see how evolution could be right and Sailer be wrong. I like reading Sailer because he forces me to see things I would often prefer not to see.

This really makes me wonder: Are NC Republican deliberately trying to sabotage the food stamp and Medicaid programs here?

Feds: NC in danger of losing food stamp money

wral.com

In a sternly worded letter issued Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture gave state Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos until Feb. 10 to meet three key milestones, including completing all benefits applications pending for more than 90 days. If the state fails, the $88 million in federal funding the state receives annually to manage its food stamp program could be terminated on March 12.

(snip)

North Carolina has struggled to process benefits applications since DHHS issued a faulty software update last summer to its new NC FAST computer system, which was supposed to streamline the process for applying and receiving government social services benefits. As a result, charities and food banks across the state have seen a surge in requests for help from those going hungry.

(snip)

The state agency also is still working through problems with the Medicaid billing system called NC Tracks that came online in July. At the start of 2014, the agency sent Medicaid cards for nearly 49,000 children to the wrong addresses — potentially costing the state millions in federal fines for exposing private medical information.

NC HHS Secy Aldona Wos is incompetent and should be fired. She never had the qualifications for the job anyway—it was a gift for services rendered from the RNC.

a void pointer is not the same as a null pointer - it’s a pointer variable with no data type specified for it to point to. therefore the address of a variable of any data type can be cast to it

Pro-animal groups appeal to pope over dove attack

Animal rights groups on Monday appealed to Pope Francis to end the practice of releasing doves from a Vatican window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, a day after a pair of the peace symbols were attacked by a seagull and crow while a crowd including thousands of children watched below.

The National Animal Protection Agency published an open letter Monday reminding Francis that domesticated doves are easy prey for predators like gulls.

Gulls nest atop the colonnade of St. Peter’s Square, near the Tiber River, and scavenge for garbage in Rome

. The animal protection agency, known as ENPA, said freeing doves in Rome is like “condemning them to certain death.”

How about controlling the gull population and allowing some of the native birds to return? Attn Hippies: Unless you live on the coast or a garbage dump gulls do not count as native wildlife.

Congressional efforts for more Iran sanctions have been downgraded to a strongly worded letter (which will probably be vetoed anyways)
Iran sanctions push stalls, U.S. lawmakers mull weaker measure

An attempt to impose new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program has stalled in the U.S. Congress and lawmakers are discussing whether to introduce a much weaker measure, congressional aides said on Monday.

Members of the Senate and House of Representatives are considering a non-binding resolution that expresses concern about Iran’s nuclear ambitions and calls for negotiators to set strict conditions in talks between Tehran and world powers.

Dynamic programming was specifically disallowed.

Although the recursive implementation has its own elegance, as long as you don’t mind exponential runtime…

levenshtein distance is dynamic programming, and also recursive

it’s dynamic programming since it “memo-izes” to keep track of the total number of inserts, deletes, and transpositions

If we add additional conditions or sanctions to that deal right now, before their six months are up, the hardliners over in Iran would just take it as a sign they don’t need to talk at all, and we’d undo any progress made so far.

Gulls do make it inland naturally. California gulls breed at Mono Lake, and they apparently hung around the Great Salt Lake in enough numbers to be Utah’s state bird. (They helped eat crickets during a locust plague early in the Mormon presence there.)

But yeah, the numbers are way beyond natural in a lot of places.

For me it’s more about the man in the suit than the suit itself. I initially thought Smith’s look during his time in the role was a bit off, but it was his acting that sold it and made it seem natural.

Interesting quote from Capaldi about the costume: “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100% rebel time lord.” Can’t wait to see him in action…

I can see how people get confused. I’m very doubtful the Iranians are negotiating in good faith and I have serious doubts about Obama’s foreign policy lately. I think new sanctions now would be counterproductive and would rather have sanctions passed on the condition of Iran backing out of the deal. I’m concerned that Iran is being given too much in return for too little so far. Easing sanctions too much now allows them to fix some economic problems and expand their nuclear program in the hopes of a deal I don’t think they have any intention of keeping.

Lot of folks love quick links. In fact I blame this little contretemps on one of them. I had replaced the chain a while back with a KMC I grabbed at the local Performance store, only to find that some bastard had stolen the quick link. So, I just reused the old one - which looked okay.

Lesson learned.

Funny thing is, I was planning on replacing the chain after this ride anyway. last I checked it JUST BARELY passed the chain checker test, and I was planning on expanding my riding come February.

Well i meant in that to many, myself included, it seemed as though they were deliberately dressing a very young character with a look fitting someone much older. However, Smith really did a great job of selling the character as a “1000+ year old man in a much younger body” so that it didn’t seem out of character.
This is, of course, in reference to his general, non-fezzy/cowboy hat look…

I used to get that feeling with turtle necks. Never could figure out why, till I had my neck measured. 17 1/2”. Standard L and XL shirts won’t come close to buttoning up on me. But, a 17 1/2” neck buttons fine, doesn’t constrict.

That makes the both of us - the first one i can understand, since The Doctor interacted directly with the character he was playing; but I don’t see how they can do that with his tragic character Frobisher from Torchwood, since the doctor was notably absent from the events that took place in the third season (as was even noted directly by one of the main characters in the final episode of the series).

Yeah but isn’t there supposed to be a barrier of sorts between DW and Torchwood (while it lasted)? The former is family oriented, while the latter is/was most decidedly aimed towards adults. This, in addition to the absence of any direct link between Frobisher and the Doctor from the past.

The barrier’s sort of wibbley-wobbley, at least in the sense that characters from one production will show up in another for one-off episodes, but one really couldn’t call them crossovers in the sense that there’s a conjoined storyline. A sense of “What happens on your side of the pond stays on your side of the pond.”

You probably shouldn’t take OTC remedies since you seem to have a low tolerance for drugs. Even an overdose of aspirin can be fatal. Also, I highly recommend physical exercise as a means of combating depression; even long, brisk walks for a couple of miles can make you feel much better—start off walking for a half an hour and increase to an hour when you get used to it. It’s free and no equipment is required except a pair of sturdy trainers.

Attn Hippies: Unless you live on the coast or a garbage dump gulls do not count as native wildlife.

Gulls have been amazing adapters since long before civilization. Some of them breed in the deep desert. They were already foraging into Utah when the Mormons arrived, with extant populations along the GSL, documented in the Miracle of the Gulls. They’re one of the only animal genus / species that live on every continent including Antarctica.

The only effective way to “cull” their population is to stop creating conditions easy for them to exploit, doing something about how much we waste. Otherwise all that food just goes to rot.
