Tech Note: Greatly Enhanced Security for Signing In

We have a great new security enhancement tonight; I’ve purchased and installed an SSL certificate, so that we can use secure HTTPS connections for signing in and other stuff that needs to be protected. As of tonight, when you sign in at LGF your password is now encrypted while it’s being transferred over the Internet, with the same type of end-to-end encryption used by banks and other secure sites.

This also fixes another problem I discovered today, with the LGF Pages posting window. If you were at a site that used HTTPS, the window would just hang up at the “Loading…” screen in Chrome and Firefox (oddly, it worked fine in Safari), because it was trying to load data from an insecure URL while at a secure page. No problem now!

Note that since HTTPS connections tend to be slower than normal HTTP connections (because of the overhead involved in encryption/decryption), for now most of the site will continue to run in non-SSL mode so it can be as fast as usual. That means you won’t see the padlock icon in your address bar when you’re browsing through LGF, but all the sensitive data is still being transferred securely.

More security is more confidence. Who would use a safe that everyone knows how to crack? After reading what Google and Microsoft are doing to encrypt the cloud data through and through I think encryption of traffic will become the norm. We’ll just have to invest more processing power to accommodate it. Which is fine with me. A net people have confidence in for security is a better ‘net for the economy.

re: #301 Targetpractice

The barrier’s sort of wibbley-wobbley, at least in the sense that characters from one production will show up in another for one-off episodes, but one really couldn’t call them crossovers in the sense that there’s a conjoined storyline. A sense of “What happens on your side of the pond stays on your side of the pond.”

Literally, if TW ever gets revived, considering that they’re probably still less-than-willing to go back to the UK and Rex’s connections with the US gov might be more useful… :-P

No need. Just tax rates, wage rate ratios, a living minimum wage & union membership rates the same as they were in Ike’s administration will do far more for the nation.

20 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jan 27, 2014 5:48:38pm

The fact that Safari let the LGF Pages bookmarklet run even when it was crossing HTTP/HTTPS protocols was nagging at me, so I investigated some more, and discovered that Safari writes an error message about content being accessed insecurely to the console — but still allows the content to be accessed. Both Chrome and Firefox block cross-protocol access, and also write an error message to the console.

Without a wealth tax, I’m not sure that would do anything but guarantee that the current 1% of 1% (but not the ‘basic’ 1%, whose wealth would no longer be enough to multiply on its own with a punitive cap-gains rate) would stay there forever, and no one could ever rise out of the lower ranks on the basis of income again…

Yes… that may seem confusing, I guess, but the idea is that when you open the Create a Page bookmarklet, you’re expecting to post something about the page that’s currently in your window — and that’s the LGF page you’re looking at when you click that button.

I considered just putting up a blank form in that case, but then what if you actually wanted to post something about the LGF page currently in your window?

So that’s why it works the way it does.

It’s a tricky issue - if you allow simultaneous logins from more than one computer you need to make sure it’s really the same user and not a hacker. That’s why some banks and other sites are now making you confirm that it’s really you when you try to sign in without signing out at another location, using an alternate authentication method like a phone call or text message.

There are six items on that list. Right wing revisionists are already playing a ‘both sides’ game for three of them (evolution, civil war, American slavery).

The Holocaust will probably start getting the revisionist history treatment from the US right in a few decades.

As no political advantage is apparent in telling lies about astrology and the Earth’s shape, these tops are probably safe from GOP meddling for the foreseeable future.

Do you really want a DSLR or would a better mirrorless camera do the trick? I’m very much on the Micro 4/3 bandwagon - smaller cameras, exquisite IQ, great native glass and the ability to use every kind of legacy glass you can imagine.

If you don’t already have a huge investment in Canon EOS glass, then I’d strongly suggest this: amazon.com

I guess Rachael Maddow had another big Koch brothers scoop tonight.
Rachel Maddow Just Caught Koch Bros. in Cover-Up Size LIE

But Rachel has found another group called the Institute for Humane Studies, which offers the “Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program”, which generously bankrolls interns’ employment at companies or groups of their choosing. And one of the groups they send “Koch Fellows” to is…the Foundation for Government Accountability.

Busted!

Here’s the Wikipage for Institute for Humane Studies

The institute is governed by a board of directors, currently chaired by Charles G. Koch.[34] The other members of the board of directors are John Blundell, Richard H. Fink, Jerome Fullinwider, Timothy Otis Browne, Tyler Cowen, Art Pope, David Humphreys, Eric O’Keefe, Todd Zywicki, William Sumner, Kristina Kendall, and Craig Johnson.[35]

IHS has received funding from a number of foundations, including the Sarah Scaife Foundation, the Koch Family Foundations, and the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.[4][36]

Perhaps the evil Koch bros forgot to scrub the wikipage because they were preoccupied with world domination or something.

creationism taught in textbooks has been a flashpoint
0:03
recently in establishing a state educational curriculum where do you
0:07
stand on the issue
0:08
and lieutenant governor to hers were gonna start with you ninety seconds
0:11
where this has been a
0:13
controversial subject over the years I happen to believe
0:17
in creationism and I believe
0:20
that in fairness that we need to expose students
0:25
to both sides of this and that’s why I’ve supported
0:30
including in our textbooks the discussion
0:33
the biblical sick the biblical killed love
0:36
life and creation and I understand their lot of people that disagree with me
0:41
and the believe in in evolution
0:45
but I think it’s a fair discussion to be will expose both sides
0:48
to our students and let them make their decision with the advice and counsel

their parents
0:54
okay senator Patrick your response
0:57
open as you know it’s another Christian first conservative second and a
1:01

1:02
third so obviously you know where I stay on this issue our students
1:06
our children our grandchildren must really be confused we asked to go to
1:10
sunday school on Sunday we asked to attend church
1:13
and then they going to school the next day until we can talk about God
1:16
the breakup all the family is has
1:20
impacted this nation and I believe the break up with the family in this country
1:24
start we’ve taken got out of the classroom I believe it with all my heart
1:28
this nation was founded on the Christian
1:30
Christian Judeo ethic and we need to stay and
1:34
for what this nation was founded upon and that’s the word of God be tolerant
1:38
of all face be tolerant
1:39
those who don’t agree with this but don’t back down step back and say I’m
1:43
sorry to be
1:44
politically correct we don’t want to offend you we need to teach
1:48
all pass in our school including
1:51
the word up got the word the Bible as well as those who believe in evolution
1:56
I’m sick and tired Ave minority
1:59
about people in our state in our country who wants to turn our back on God as
2:03
lieutenant governor I’m not going to do that and Commissioner Patterson your
2:06
response
2:07
conversation recently with a schoolteacher
2:10
and we were talking about this very subject I’m a comet that when I was
2:13
going to public school
2:14
we had the Pledge of Allegiance the Lord’s Prayer in by the way we had about
2:18
thirty eight kids per class we got a really good education
2:21
and she said well what about the separation the constitutional separation
2:25
of church and state
2:26
as it will show me where that’s in the constitution
2:30
because it’s not in the Constitution what you’ll find in the first amendment
2:34
says the Congress shall make no law regarding the practice in the state
2:37
religion
2:38
or words to that effect there is no prohibition there’s a prohibition on
2:42
having a state religion
2:43
so while those words are often mentioned as being in the constitution they’re not
2:48
we need to move away from the politically correct posture that we find
2:53
ourselves in all too often today
2:54
we need to go back to those things that make this country great and I see
2:58
nothing wrong with standing up at least for a moment of silence
3:01
you know let those who wish to pray pray in their own face
3:05
I see nothing wrong with a prayer before high school football game
3:08
we have gotten so focused as a dancer
3:12
about not offending somebody I have a constitutional right to be offended
3:16
and so does everybody else okay Thank You Commission about I think mister
3:20
stable 0
3:21
well as a Christian creationism certainly should be taught we don’t need
3:25
a
3:25
approach our school system in a manner a political correctness
3:28
we need a absolutely demanded our value systems or influence in our kids
3:33
because the problem we have today is that our children are not sitting around
3:37
a breakfast table before
3:39
go to our public education system our teachers today are being asked not only
3:43
to
3:43
educate our kids but raise our kids and that is an unfortunate situation
3:48
and we need to make certain when our curriculum in our lesson plans
3:51
that we are are challenging our children for success
3:55
talk a little bit about career readiness and college readiness
3:58
one element 1 see that were missing in our education system today
4:02
is citizenship readiness were failing to educate
4:06
this generation about the principles bill this great nation
4:10
we cannot abandon them all will be destined for the pathway
4:14

Do you really want a DSLR or would a better mirrorless camera do the trick? I’m very much on the Micro 4/3 bandwagon - smaller cameras, exquisite IQ, great native glass and the ability to use every kind of legacy glass you can imagine.

If you don’t already have a huge investment in Canon EOS glass, then I’d strongly suggest this: amazon.com

or this:

amazon.com

I personally prefer a view finder - so I added this to my E-PL1: amazon.com

I am making a note of these things for when I don’t want to haul the DSLR around.

These are really nice cameras.

American do tend to have this “It’s big so it’s good” problem and m4/3 doesn’t do that well. But they have good IQ (exquisite out of camera JPG - I stopped bothering with RAW because the camera is better than I was). and the prices are very very very competitive.

I always preferred rangefinders to SLR’s in the film world & these are much like that. You may or may not like the way they work but if you do there isn’t anything better on the market these days - IMO and all that.

Today I want to present a map of central Kiev on January 27, the middle of the day. The main changes for the day: two new built barricades (street Arch. Gorodetsky and st. Zankovetska). Consequently, the territory controlled by the Maidan, expanded towards Lipki (“government quarter”). The Ministry of Justice (which was seized at night, but then released) blocked “maydanovtsami.” By clicking the big picture.

re: #141 Whack-A-Mole

OT, a quick question for the many photographers on LGF:

Is Canon’s Rebel T3 a good choice to start with? Is it good value for the money: $449 with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens and a (non-stabilized) 75-300mm lens?

If no, any other recommendations for a low cost, entry-level DSLR that will leave me room to grow?

I’m pretty late, but hopefully you’re subscribed to the thread.

I bought a T3i with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens for $437 last month and I’m very, very happy with it, though I have to admit I immediately turned around and bought more lenses.

I watched many, many YouTube reviews on telephoto zoom lenses and read pretty much every review I could find at Adorama & B&H and finally settled on the EF-S 55-250mm as it has image stabilization and better reviews where IQ (image quality) is concerned.

You really don’t want to get a long telephoto lens without stabilization as the camera shake will get worse the farther the lens is extended. Try this: Hold one end of a pencil loosely between two fingers and wiggle it a little… see how the part where your fingers are grasping it barely moves, but the other end wobbles like crazy? You lens will do the same thing, which isn’t good for various reasons. The alternative is to use a tripod.

FWIW, I’m happy enough with the performance of the EF-S 55-250mm, but I quickly discovered that I don’t much like lugging long lenses around and prime lenses offer much better IQ. If I had to do it all over again I’d probably try to find the same camera body, but with the EF-S 18-135mm IS lens or maybe even the EF-S 17-85mm USM IS instead (though both of those typically come as kit lenses with higher end camera bodies).

My favorite prime lenses are the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake and the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. I adore them both and despise the EF 50mm f/1.8 II (also known as the “nifty fifty” or “plastic fantastic”).

Anyway, I just realized I’m talking too much (again). Spend some time on YouTube before making up your mind. My favorite lens reviewer is Christopher Frost and my favorite teacher is Mike Browne.

Hope that helps a little.

I Have a Rendezvous with Death
by Alan Seeger

I have a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air—
I have a rendezvous with Death
When Spring brings back blue days and fair.

It may be he shall take my hand
And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath—
It may be I shall pass him still.
I have a rendezvous with Death
On some scarred slope of battered hill,
When Spring comes round again this year
And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows ‘twere better to be deep
Pillowed in silk and scented down,
Where love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakenings are dear…
But I’ve a rendezvous with Death
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous.

Pete’s uncle. Poem is from 1917. WWI. Killed by the Germans after he joined the French foreign legion. WWI began 100 years ago in 1914. Pete Seeger was born in 1919.

258 Gus  Mon, Jan 27, 2014 11:07:28pm

On August 18, 1955, Seeger was subpoenaed to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Alone among the many witnesses after the 1950 conviction and imprisonment of the Hollywood Ten for contempt of Congress, Seeger refused to plead the Fifth Amendment (which asserted that his testimony might be self incriminating) and instead (as the Hollywood Ten had done) refused to name personal and political associations on the grounds that this would violate his First Amendment rights: “I am not going to answer any questions as to my association, my philosophical or religious beliefs or my political beliefs, or how I voted in any election, or any of these private affairs. I think these are very improper questions for any American to be asked, especially under such compulsion as this.”[68] Seeger’s refusal to testify led to a March 26, 1957, indictment for contempt of Congress; for some years, he had to keep the federal government apprised of where he was going any time he left the Southern District of New York. He was convicted in a jury trial of contempt of Congress in March 1961, and sentenced to 10 years in jail (to be served simultaneously), but in May 1962 an appeals court ruled the indictment to be flawed and overturned his conviction.

259 wheat-dogghazi  Mon, Jan 27, 2014 11:11:34pm

I was lucky to catch Seeger in concert when I was in high school during the ’70s. He and some other activist performers gave a concert at New World College on the North Shore of Long Island. (Coincidentally, not very far from my former elementary school.) It may have been for Earth Day … it’s been a while.

Pete Seeger’s Statement to the Court, 1961
Reprinted from Sing Out!, Summer 1961 (Vol. 11, No. 3)

Folksinger Pete Seeger, a member of the editorial board of this magazine ever since its founding more than ten years ago, has been found guilty of “contempt of Congress.” He was tried in the Federal Court House in New York and a jury convicted him on a ten-count indictment.

The indictment and subsequent trial grew out of a hearing of the Committee on Un-American Activities in the summer of 1955. At that time, Seeger refused to answer questions relating to his political beliefs and associations.

Judge Murphy, who presided at the trial, sentenced Seeger to a year in jail on each of the ten counts — ruling, however, that the jail terms would be served concurrently. Seeger was also fined the “costs of the prosecution.” Maximum sentence could have been a total of ten years in jail and a fine of $10,000.

Before passing sentence, Judge Murphy asked Seeger if he wanted to make a statement to the court. Following is Pete Seeger’s complete statement made to the court at that time:

“Thank you, your honor. After hearing myself talked about, pro and con, for three days, I am grateful for the chance to say a few unrestricted words.

First, I should like to thank my lawyer for his masterly presentation of my defense. He has worked over many long weeks and months, knowing that it is beyond my power to pay him adequately for his work. I believe that he, and great legal minds like Justice Hugo Black and Dr. Alexander Meiklejohn, have explained far better than I can why they believe the First Amendment gives an American citizen the right to refuse to speak upon occasion.

Secondly, I should like to state before this court, much as I did before Congressman Walter’s committee, my conviction that I have never in my life said, or supported, or sung anything in any way subversive of my country. Congressman Walter stated that he was investigating a conspiracy. I stated under oath that I had never done anything conspiratorial. If he doubted my word, why didn’t he even question it? Why didn’t he have me indicted for perjury? Because, I believe, even he knew that I was speaking the truth.

Some of my ancestors were religious dissenters who came to America over 300 years ago. Others were abolitionists in New England of the 1840’s and 50’s. I believe that in choosing my present course I do no dishonor to them, or to those who may come after me.

I am 42 years old, and count myself a very lucky man. I have a wife and three healthy children, and we live in a house we built with our own hands, on the banks of the beautiful Hudson River. For twenty years I have been singing folksongs of America and other lands to people everywhere. I am proud that I never refused to sing to any group of people because I might disagree with some of the ideas of some of the people listening to me. I have sung for rich and poor, for Americans of every possible political and religious opinion and persuasion, of every race, color, and creed.

The House committee wished to pillory me because it didn’t like some few of the many thousands of places I have sung for. Now it so happens that the specific song whose title was mentioned in this trial “Wasn’t That A Time” is one of my favorites. The song is apropos to this case. I wonder if I might have your permission to sing it here before I close?”

(At this point the judge refused to hear Pete Seeger sing.)

“Well, perhaps you will hear it some other time. A good song can only do good, and I am proud of the songs I have sung. I hope to be able to continue singing these songs for all who want to listen, Republicans, Democrats, and independents. Do I have the right to sing these songs? Do I have the right to sing them anywhere?”

re: #277 Gus

My dad was pretty conservative, and a Republican, but not a nutjob. Even so, he had no patience for Seeger or Joan Baez, who he considered to be close to traitors for their opposition to the war. His buddy was an audiophile, and often got review copies of Quadraphonic albums and would share them with Dad. One of them was by Baez (a two-record set, as I recall). Although he still didn’t like Baez’ politics, even Dad had to admit she sang beautifully.

Seeger was maybe too idealistic in expecting songs would change history, but music does have power if you can get people to listen to it. I am sure if I had asked Dad to listen to Seeger and Baez, he would have rejected them both. But his contemporary recommended Baez, and Dad softened his attitudes toward her.

So. This happened.

[Embedded content]

What the fuckety fuck? So, a real NSA agent is identified, and this person’s life as he or she knew it is now over. Self and family at great risk now.

This is why amateur thieves like Snowden and agenda-driven douches like Greenwald and Poitras should not have possession of classified documents. They are reckless and should be held accountable, not celebrated. And I say this as someone who believes that govt should be as transparent and responsible to its citizens as possible. But some things should be kept out of the wrong hands—like theirs.

This is infuriating and who knows where it will lead?

Rank amateurs, all of them. And I’m pissed, because now I feel less safe, for myself and my family. The future is screwed if people like this are allowed to get away with their crimes. To allow a few people with criminal intent to get away with these kinds of cyber-crimes is just as reckless as allowing terrorists to get away with theirs, maybe worse in some respects.

If I steal money from my employer, I go to jail for embezzlement. What Snowden stole was far more valuable than that money would be. He gets no credit from me for anything. Changes to the NSA were already in the pipeline—Snowden and his gang of miscreants just couldn’t wait for the process. Their shallow thinking and narcissism took over, as it often does with evangelically-minded crusaders.

Well, it helped that this was in all caps and the first word maybe gave me a clue that is was announcing that Azarov had resigned? But note that age 66 is the compulsory retirement age in Ukraine, and Azarov turned 66 in Dec, so he’s not giving up anything, really. He’ll get a good retirement income and not have to deal with anything. Azarov is also of Russian origin and doesn’t speak Ukrainian very well, so he can get a dacha by the Black Sea and be comfortable.

Read the entire article. They may be jumping the gun. Also, some ancestors were real drunks?

“In fact, I believe we have been drinking for as long as we’ve had agriculture,” he says. “One early source is the Roman senator Tacitus, who describes how Nordic people brewed a certain resemblance of wine made of grain and water.”

“Later, around year 900 AD, an Arabian man ran into some Vikings in northern Russia, and he was not impressed with the Vikings’ relationship with alcohol.

“He describes how they drank and remained drunk all day,” says Henriksen.”

Gus has a page up about the Texastan GOP lt. governor candidates in a debate not long ago.

Monday they had another one:

Lt. governor debate touches on marijuana, abortion and creationism

and

GOP hopefuls debate in show of conservative strength [that’s quite the euphemism]

[…]

Aside from Dewhurst, the lieutenant governor’s race features state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.

[…]

Throughout the debate, all four agreed on a host of far-right issues: that creationism should be taught in school, that border enforcement needs to be strengthened and that each is unwavering in their support of pro-life policy.

The candidates also weighed in on a hot-button case out of Fort Worth in which a judge last week ruled that a hospital could unhook from life support a brain-dead woman who was pregnant. The case of Marlise Muñoz received national attention after hospital officials said a Texas law required them to keep her alive to protect the fetus, despite her husband’s objections. She was taken off life support Sunday after a judge allowed the family’s request.

All four said the judge got it wrong.

[…]

Starts shortly after 4:00.

Texastan, indeed.

295 Justanotherhuman  Tue, Jan 28, 2014 2:54:23am

Just remember: Until Snowden allegedly taught him, Greenwald says he didn’t even know how to encrypt a simple email.

“This was bound to happen at some point in this ongoing saga: the name of an American agent has been leaked to the public via a document stolen by Edward Snowden. To add to the irresponsibility of how Snowden went about this operation, he distributed untold thousands of documents to a gaggle of technological neophytes who barely understand how to used Adobe Acrobat, much less the phenomenally complicated details of top secret NSA operations.

“The public relies upon these reporters to accurately translate the techno-heavy information in the Snowden documents for the benefit of the debate. How can we be sure that this sort of epic blunder won’t happen again? Indeed, as more reporters gain access to Snowden’s documents, the likelihood only increases.

“As for Snowden, rather than choosing very specific files which he deemed to be in the public interest, then carefully vetting every detail, he chose to indiscriminately dump the documents into the world, trusting that reporters will figure it all out and do the right thing. While no one’s perfect and we all make mistakes, this is high stakes material and there’s simply no room for errors like this. “

This is very interesting, both in the revelation that these 2 brothers were MPs in the Ukrainian Parliament when they got this loan at an Austrian bank (not even one in Ukraine—why outside your own country?) and that they lied about being politically important persons on the application for the loan—I’m guessing they thought the Austrians wouldn’t know who they were and wouldn’t have questions.

And BTW, Andrew Kliuev is currently Secretary of National Security and Defense and set up a working group in Parliament to “resolve” the current crisis. And the Ukrainian people are supposed to trust this liar?

Austrian banks confirmed that kliuev lied

pravda.com.ua

“In the Austrian bank Hypo Vorarlberg confirmed the authenticity of the documents, which kliuev to provide false information .

This article refers to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard.

Chairman of the Board Hypo Vorarlberg Michael Hrahammer said that the documents referred to kliuev “false ” do not identify themselves as ” politically important person .”

” We believe that the form has been filled incorrectly by mistake ” - said Hrahammer .

He added that customers - to kliuev - were familiar with the bank. Also, the bank knew of their status as “politically relevant persons ” through publication in print.

The bank also are checking how scandalous document was available to the ” Ukrainian Truth” .

This document Kliuiev were asked whether they “politisch exponierte Personen” ( PEP ) - or , translated , “politically important persons .”

And Andrew Kliuev and Sergey Kliuev answered ” no” clearly violated the law of Austrian banks. Indeed, at the time of card - February 22, 2010 - they were both MPs Ukraine .”

Good cold morning!

-10° currently in central Ohio. Hopefully this will be the last day of this crap.

Well, looks like I missed a fun-filled evening of Killgore being all Killgore on Maddow.

I see some of the news this am is about Obama having low poll numbers the day he makes his State of the Union Address. From what I can tell, it seems that the poll questions are mainly about the economy, future direction and the like.

Would not the President’s ratings fall due to the extremely low rated do-nothing Congress especially when general questions are asked about things like economy, direction, etc. Would not people expect the President to be able to control congress and direct them to the proper direction and since he can’t get anything done with them, it would reflect in his numbers.

I’d like to hear some of the answers to the polling questions. I bet the general malaise in this country colors just about everything.

Add in all the hate that is thrown against the President and I would think 47% isn’t all that bad. Oh well. Onward. Trudge…trudge…damn this muck is thick.

Brrrr! It’s 27 here now and they’re calling (but hedging) on snow today and maybe tonight, perhaps even a “few” inches. It would be the first one of the winter here. But they always hedge—it’s never a definite thing here like maybe it would be in the mountains.

And yeah, this Congress has been essentially a “do nothing” Congress since it started in 2009 and forward. After all, who the entire country chose doesn’t matter—only their own little personal fiefdoms back home do.

There appear to be concerns that more mercenaries are being hired to help the riot police, according to this report. According to the video, if I’m interpreting it right, they’re even advertising on the web for recruits, so they could be from anywhere. Also, described as a pyramid scheme—for every person you recruit, you get paid, too, on up the line. Those w/military experience get more money. This is a rough Google translation from Ukrainian (they seem to do better w/Russian).

“In Ukraine squads ” tytushok ” turned into a true pyramid . Participation in combat is much more. ” Pay 200 USD. During the day and at night. If only I had the money I would have this in my life has come ” - says protesters.

“Tytushky ” who caught last night on the streets of Kyiv , apologized to the people instead ” tytushky ” kickboxers and former soldiers receive more favorable terms. What these former ambassadors to the Ukraine don’t understand about this protest is that the oligarchs are part of the problem, not part of the solution. There is real resentment against those who have gotten rich on the people’s dime with the blessing of the bureaucrats who turned much of the country’s wealth and resources over to them, just as in Russia. I don’t think anyone really wants more bloodshed, more deaths, but unless even the West understands the real dynamics of this situation, no one can help from the outside. For the majority of people in Ukraine, in Russia and in other countries within Russia’s sphere, “trickle down” isn’t working any better there than it is in the US or Europe.

The snow we got ,,,,, a dusting, at best. Started at about 10 pm one night (ended by 6 the next morning) . It is a peculiar trait of the American Right to be outraged about cutting pay for one particular profession, while simultaneously outraged about raising pay for another profession.

The government is incompetent and corrupt and can’t do anything right and GUB’MINT IS THE PROBLEM NOT THE ANSWER… except when it comes to the largest, most well-funded (read: possessed of the most waste, fraud and graft) wing of the government: the military.

I seem to recall hearing that one of their speakers talked about having their grandkid in one hand and their speech in the other well in advance of the actual address.

A thinking, rational and engaged party base would be outraged that their representatives already had a response before even hearing the speech, but then again this is America. Politics-as-sports-contests should be one of the most ire-raising and despicable states of being, but we embrace it.

Good to know the ole brain still retains some stuff

Since 1966,[19] the speech has been followed on television by a response or rebuttal by a member of the political party opposing the President’s party.

So at least for the past almost 50 years the other party must have gotten an advanced copy of the POTUS’s speech

ZOMG TYRANNY

President Obama plans to sign an executive order requiring that janitors, construction workers and others working for federal contractors be paid at least $10.10 an hour, using his own power to enact a more limited version of a policy that he has yet to push through Congress.

More of this please. Obama will try to do this legislatively and get nowhere, so if the Congress was stupid enough to give the President the flexibility to make these EOs viable, then he should do it.

to add: he’s daring the GOP to overturn the EO - God bless him.

This is why the GOP claims that because Bill Clinton or Anthony Weiner engaged in adultery or inappropriate sexual conduct disqualifies Democrats from talking about a war on women misses the boat.

The GOP policy has been to attack the right of women to control their own bodies - whether it’s via access to contraception (with or without insurance), abortion access (waiting periods, intrusive procedures), or suggesting that marital rape isn’t rape (or doesn’t exist) or that you can’t get pregnant if you’ve been raped, or any of the other inanities that the GOP has trotted out in the past several years as part of TRAP laws to eliminate the right of women to access legal abortions.

It’s the policy that is abusive and attacks women. And the GOP is perfectly fine having a bunch of white guys telling women of all colors, creeds, or religious orientations what’s acceptable or not.

The shutdown was perpetrated by the GOP. John Boehner admitted as much way back in July 2013, when they had a handshake deal with Democrats on a budget, but the TP extortionists demanded nothing but a delay/destroy Obamacare scorched earth policy, and that’s what Boehner went with.

They failed, and it led to a shutdown.

A shutdown that affected more than National Parks and the monuments in DC.

It affected provision of care for seniors, and a whole host of other functions of government that people don’t pay much attention to except when it goes away.

Now, we’re about to get a farm bill deal, one that cuts food stamps, but not as drastically as the GOP demanded, but which also cut subsidies as well.

That’s taken as a positive, even though the food costs for people aren’t declining. It just means less food to be purchased by people who need the safety net at any time.

Exactly, this shutdown happened because Boehner the coward that he is cared more about the whims of a bunch of extremists who couldn’t accept that a legitimately passed law was about to be implemented then doing the right thing. Anyone who blames Obama for the shutdown or even tries the stupid and dishonest both sides tactics is either delusional or willfully ignorant.

President Ted Cruz and Vice President Allen West, obviously.

I know quite a few people who either outright blame Obama and the Dems for the shutdown, or Magic Balance Fairy the whole thing. Shit, I know a few that were calling for Obama to be impeached over it.

I wonder if Boehner, et. al., were counting on the American voter’s general inability to grasp complex issues to at least take some heat off of the GOP. From where I’m sitting, it seemed to work.

and so much of that can be laid squarely at the feet of our media, who are busy being stenographers or GOP water carriers….

Did we all hear about the travesty where Reid broke down and had to drop the hammer on the judicial and legislative appointments and rammed them through, thereby destroying the comity and protocols of the Senate, with nary a sideways glance at the fact that McConnell himself was the perpetrator who reneged on their agreement?

How much coverage did we get about the R’s new House rules changes that only allows amendments to bills and new bills to be introduced by the GOP?

People ask why aren’t the Dems doing anything? They are, but when you get one group going scorched earth all the time and the media doing NOTHING to expose what is taking place, ginned up outrage and people that work two-three jobs to just get by don’t have the time or sometimes the wherewithal to figure this shit out. Especially so when the Right apparently has the cash to set the narrative and framing on the four major public networks and all of AM radio.

If I understand correctly, Democrats are racist because we elected a black President, because the only reason we did so was because he was black.

Not because McCain and Romney didn’t succeed in their campaigns, or a dozen other factors.

And somehow that last assumption is supposed to say something about the accused, not accuser.

If you want to get tipsy, drink when Obama says “Let me be clear”

If you want to get drunk, drink when the RWNJs tweet about teleprompters.

Evidently, Kiev Post is continuing to give updates on the demonstrations. I thought this was noteworthy.

A Griffon officer leaves service because his father is a protester

6:25 p.m., Jan. 28 — A Griffon officer by the name of Mykola Kovbasa quit service in elite police troops because he does not want to shoot at his father, a protester.

Kovbasa said that although Griffon elite unit was created for guarding courts, after violent clashes on Hrushevskoho Street on Jan. 19-22 the unit was moved to reserve and waited to back up the troops.

He said the last drop for him was the video where his colleagues from Berkut, the riot police unit, torture a naked man. “I don’t want to have anything to do with the law enforcement organs,” he told Zik TV channel in Lviv. “To be honest, I feel ashamed that I used to work in interior organs.” He served in Griffon for four years.

He said although Griffon troops were not involved in clashes with civilians, they could have been given the order any minute. He said he could not have executed the order because his father has been on Maidan for three weeks.”Even if the order was not to use live ammunition, but to throw smoke grenades at the protesters. Knowing that my father was there, I could not do it,” he said. — Katya Gorchinskaya

re: #189 Chrysicat

Well, if you can ignore the IFV in the back—that’s pretty obviously post-1990…

That’s a BTR Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), not an IFV. Ukraine uses tracked BMPs as Infantry Fighting Vehicles, with the wheeled BTRs being used for operations against foes with few heavy weapons or ops requiring greater operational mobility.

Dealing with EuroMaidan is the former category. The BMP-2’s 30mm automatic cannon would be more destructive that is prudent and its AGTM launcher would be no use at all. Only its PKM 7.62mm machine gun would be useful and the BTR mounts one of those as well. This is likely one of the BTRs that can been refitted with a forward-hull-mounted 30mm automatic grenade launcher. Such a launcher can fire tear gas and rubber baton rounds, which are useful for riot control.
