We have a great new security enhancement tonight; I’ve purchased and installed an SSL certificate, so that we can use secure HTTPS connections for signing in and other stuff that needs to be protected. As of tonight, when you sign in at LGF your password is now encrypted while it’s being transferred over the Internet, with the same type of end-to-end encryption used by banks and other secure sites.

This also fixes another problem I discovered today, with the LGF Pages posting window. If you were at a site that used HTTPS, the window would just hang up at the “Loading…” screen in Chrome and Firefox (oddly, it worked fine in Safari), because it was trying to load data from an insecure URL while at a secure page. No problem now!

Note that since HTTPS connections tend to be slower than normal HTTP connections (because of the overhead involved in encryption/decryption), for now most of the site will continue to run in non-SSL mode so it can be as fast as usual. That means you won’t see the padlock icon in your address bar when you’re browsing through LGF, but all the sensitive data is still being transferred securely.
