You can see it. Ignorance shining bright, ready to go forth and stupefy.

You want a picture of four men who are blindingly ignorant and full of themselves and damn proud of it? There it is. “The only climate change I see is the denial of God in our Science classes.”

6 HappyWarrior  Tue, Jan 28, 2014 8:13:37am

Instead of progressing on this issue, seems to me the Texas GOP is eager to stay in the dark ages. It’s quite sad really knowing the history of Scopes and all that. Clarence Darrow is rolling over in his grave knowing that we’re still fighting this nearly 90 years after the trial of John Scopes.

I see you just got promoted. Congrats.

Maybe you or Charles want to add the following to this - showing how states like Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee are destroying science curricula by introducing creationism into science classrooms.

(ed note): Not only introduced, but is actively funding with taxpayer funds the introduction of creationism in science classrooms.

Exhibit A why I will never, ever vote Republican in this state again.

I used to delude myself that by looking at the candidates individually instead of by party, I was doing a good thing. Not anymore. The Texas GOP are full of raving lunatics like this. I won’t vote for anyone with an (R) after their name again. If my only option in a race is a GOP candidate, I leave it blank.

Also, David Dewhurst’s political savvy explains why Ted Cruz is a Senator. Let that sink in a while.

I’ve never voted Republican on a national level and don’t plan to. On the state and local level, though, I used to read all the voter guides and try to “play fair” by tossing votes here and there to the GOP. That was a stupid idea. That kind of voting just enables these cretins and encourages them to let the stupid flow.

I’ll still read the voter guides on the various bond issues and resolutions and all that, but for the candidates, it’s cut and dried for me. Anyone but an (R). The “a pox on both their houses!” nonsense doesn’t interest me.

Probably not. Too many people, perhaps most, think there is no difference between the parties. They also think that all politicians everywhere and for all time are utterly incompetent at best, absolutely evil at worst.

They supported the GOP generally because the GOP promised them the impossible: lower taxes, better services and smaller deficits/debt. Then the GOP went insane and these voters stopped voting for them. Next time they’ll vote for whoever promises the impossible again. The libertarians, probably.

Just wondering if any others think the little tweet/blog battle that broke out between Erick Erickson and Greta Van Susteren over Wendy Davis is any kind of signal that there may be a slow growing split of the completely whacky versus the mildly whacky going down at Fox and elsewhere?

Sometimes all it takes is a little daylight shining for a person to start to question others. Then once they begin to question they might start to look into questioning everything and that closer look may even start to influence their own thinking. The old “what the hell am I doing” self reflection.

I know it might be me hoping for something that isn’t there, but you never know. The other thing to think about is if it may start others to wonder and sides start getting chosen and then the boss (Roger Ailes) hears about it and he has to look into what is going on.

I’m know I am looking for molehills and straws but one can only hope.

I see it as the Balkanization of the GOP continuing apace. You have the split between the “mainstream” and the “conservatives,” who are further divided by how strongly they cling to one issue or another. When the Democrats had half their party go nuts, they broke ties with them and ran them out of the party on a rail. The GOP embraced them and is now watching as they burn the house down around themselves while pointing fingers for whose match is to blame.

Maybe. My pet theory about Shep Smith is that he’s told to be Fox’s loose cannon; basically, it’s an act. From what I know about Fox News, the employees can’t go to the bathroom without Roger Ailes’s permission.

Maybe Van Susteren’s truly irritated with Erickson. The cynical part of me doesnt buy it. It just seems like receiving a paycheck from Fox implies that you’re going to supporting their dogma, or else.

7:15 p.m., Jan. 28 — Channel TVi released a video of the deadly Jan. 22 clashes between the police and the demonstrators on Hrushevsky Street, shot on the side of Berkut riot troops. Three protesters were shot to death: Serhiy Nihoyan, Michael Zhyznevskyy and Roman Senyk.

The six-minute footage taken at different stages of confrontation shows the work of the police against the demonstrators: they advance at the protesters, throw smoke grenades and shoot from various weapons. It shows how the troops were coordinated, and how they swear at protesters and call them “Banderas,” a reference to Stepan Bandera, leader of Ukrainian Insurgent Army in western Ukraine that during World War II fought for Ukraine’s independence.

The video seems to have been taken by one of the officers, but no description is available. —Katya Gorchinskaya

In other Texas news….

EDINBURG - Whether or not he knew a middle school was in his line of fire, that’s not the same thing as knowing there were children there, attorneys for Edinburg marksman Dustin Wesley Cook argued in a motion last week.

Cook, 38, is accused of accidentally shooting two students at Harwell Middle School in December 2011. The gunshots left Nicholas “Nicko” Tijerina, then 13, paralyzed and Edson Amaro, then 14, with serious internal organ damage.

Cook, who was target shooting in the direction of the school with a high-powered rifle a full mile away, faces trial Monday on charges of recklessly causing injury to a child.

Yeah, I’m blown away by the discoveries they are making at that site. National Geographic did a spread and there have been a couple TV shows about it but considering how amazing a site it is, it has gotten precious little popular attention. I can’t help but wonder if the fact that its age is in conflict with young earth theology has made some networks reluctant to feature it.

[Cook’s attorney Michael Guerra] has long argued that the “reckless” charge against Cook is too harsh, saying that what happened was a freak accident in a rural area where the school was “getting rained on by bullets every day.”

That sounds like a statement that needs some serious backup, or some serious backlash from a judge for daring to utter it.

All this sort of applies to the discussion yesterday about shooting range requirements (or lack thereof), and how/where said any requirements get enforced. Also sounds like Texas needs a felony “acting like a total idiot” law regarding activities that put others at risk.

Faith in humanity semi restored. The road in front of my house is covered in ice and snow. It’s a slight down hill decline when you’re headed west. Three guys are out there watching and helping push cars that are getting stuck going up the hill. They must live in the neighborhood across the street. I was going to take the dog for a walk and one of them came up to us and said it really isn’t safe because of the cars sliding all over, they already had pushed a pickup truck off the sidewalk just a couple houses down.

Every now and then people surprise you. My big concern is The Husband getting home ok from work, and the kids being let out of school early. A lot of High Schoolers here drive to school, none of them have experience driving in snow. I am so glad I did my errands yesterday. People make fun of Atlanta shutting down when it snows 1/4 of an inch, but there is ice under all that snow (about 2 inches now), it’s really a mess. You know it’s bad when people are actually driving 10-15 miles an hour.

No. Twitter would make it too easy to spot dissidents. Who needs wiretap and cameras on every telephone pole when your enemies can’t help but shout out how much they hate the tyrant?

Also, honey traps. Have one of the tyrant’s agents tweet about how evil the tyrant is and then hunt down those who agree with them.

The internet can make oppression as efficient as it does communication.

I’d love to have about $10,000 grand in cash and walk into that shop acting like you didn’t see the sign. Ask about some real nice items, say you have cash and flash the stack of bills. Get the salesperson drooling a bit then walk up to the counter to pay. Look at the sign, pick up the cash, turn and walk right out the door. Nothing heated said, just move on.

Yeah. Let’s see how much you hold that policy Mr. Tough Guy store owner.

I might actually do that. There is reportedly a store in a nearby town with a similar sign: “No Obama Voters.” I know the subject well enough to pass for a high dollar gun buyer. I don’t much like the idea of carrying 10 grand in cash, but I could break out my robber-baron car to help the illusion. It needs some exercise anyway. Might ask for a Barrett .50 rifle to deal with the infernal hogs on my place (the accursed beasts really are there, too). For further cred, I’m old enough to absent-mindedly miss the sign on the way in, but not so senile that I wouldn’t notice it later.

They’re not all-day sessions, but attending them would mean I would have to not attend a job fair I had planned on attending tomorrow and I would need to either cancel or reschedule an interview set for Thursday.

Should I scrap going to the job fair and try to reschedule the interview, or should I see if there is a training class I could attend next week? I think the former is the correct course, but advice would help.

If there is even a remote chance the part-time job could turn into a full time job, I’d consider going to the part time job. Who knows, your hard work could lead to something, and you do have a good lead by just being on the job part time. The other stuff is a big maybe and may not even be a lead.

4 Shot At NC Church Playground: Boy Critically Wounded

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Police in a North Carolina town are searching for a shooter who sprayed a church playground with gunfire, striking four youths playing basketball and critically wounding a 12-year-old boy.

The Rev. James Gailliard at Word Tabernacle Church in Rocky Mount says the shooting happened Monday shortly before 6 p.m., as neighborhood teens played basketball on courts behind the sanctuary.

The pastor says he heard more than 15 gunshots and then held a boy shot in the head until authorities arrived.

The child was taken to a hospital by helicopter, where he remained in critical condition. Police said the others shot - ages 13, 17 and 19 - were treated and released.

The shooting comes just more than a week after a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed nearby.

I will probably be putting in an order for a few more patterns and some beads/braid that the LNS hasn’t had in stock like three times now at my favorite online retailer. And there’s a new stand for needlework that has caught my eye…hmm.

If I have finished my program, I can plan to go up to Alameda and shop. BWHAHAHA.

On a serious note, I’d like to ask the group for advice:

I just got offered a part-time job I’d interviewed for yesterday. While the offer is good news I’d need to attend training sessions tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday.

Attend the training. Bird in hand situation to my thinking.

Just as they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan, the advanced sensors of the Predator recon drone allowed allowed the raid team to locate when the miscreant was hiding within a structure. This permitted the team (in this case a civilian agency SWAT team) to use an approach and tactics that allowed them to apprehend the lawbreaker without anyone being hurt or killed.

As an aside, while I recognize and share the concerns many people have about the overuse of SWAT teams, this kind of ‘dangerous entry’ mission is a legitimate SWAT assignment.

Brossart’s trouble began in 2011, when six cows wandered onto his property. After Brossart refused to return the cows to their owner, the Grand Forks, N.D., SWAT team was called in to arrest the man. What followed was a 16-hour, armed standoff that eventually ended when the SWAT team called in a Predator drone on loan from the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Patrol. The drone was able to locate Brossart and his three armed sons on the property and let police know it was safe it make to make an arrest. Brossart was allegedly tased during the arrest.

Too much of it would be problematic, but to call for a drone after the standoff had already begun was reasonable and prudent. It was used only to perform surveillance on a group of people for whose leader the police already had an arrest warrant. That is a limited enough use to be justified.

In case anyone is wondering. In the US Army an E-1 private makes the equivalent of working a fulltime job at $8.85/hour at a bare minimum. This is base level cash here without calculating any benefits in, and assuming they are not actually deployed anywhere.

So it works out to be more than Federal minimum wage even without any benefits (which is about how many benes a minimum wage worker gets.)

re: #119 ObserverArt

That is similar to what I posted a few months ago regarding anyone that is publicly associated as the face of a business and then goes out and makes all kinds of strident political statements. You are asking to chase some customers.

It doesn’t even have to be a strident statement, just an unpopular one.

A few years ago I was co-authoring a series of books. My co-author and I hung out at the same politics sub-forum at a popular writer’s hangout. Our politics were different (their’s was edging wingnut status) but it didn’t matter to me. They were a good writer and we’d been chatting on Yahoo for years. We got along.

Then I posted an opinion that made a lot of people’s heads explode at the writer’s board. My co-author then made it clear that they did not approve of me posting something that would chase customers away.

I tried to point out that a) their opinions posted on that board would also chase customers away, and, b) it’s part of the price a person pays for freedom of speech. A price I was willing to pay.

They were having none of it. My co-author made it clear I was never going to post a political opinion on-line anywhere ever again. If I felt I must they would have to read it first and if they disapproved it was not going to be posted. If I didn’t as they commanded they would kill the project and the excuse they would give is that my co-author could not work with someone so ‘unprofessional’.

In our society being labelled unprofessional is like being labelled a pedophile. For many people it’s an accusation that requires no proof and even those who do wait for evidence tend to have their perception of you warped.

So I knew the project was over. I don’t knuckle under to bullies. We finished the book we were working on and went our separate ways. They still spread the unprofessional rumour though.

It was my first inkling that those who label themselves ‘conservative’ seem to share a very different ethical framework from myself.

Yep. Not sure about other places in the country, but here in Atlanta there’s Michael’s Arts and Crafts, Jo Ann Fabrics(they carry some craft stuff) and I think we might still have Dick Blick stores here, I haven’t been in one for awhile though. Hell even WalMart carries craft and fabric/sewing stuff.

Our Hobby Lobby is a big thing for model train collectors, they have a huge model train display in the front of the store. But honestly, they don’t have anything that can’t be found anywhere else, especially online.

Oh, I miss having a Dick Blick store nearby. Had one when I lived in Illinois.

Israel jails anti-Zionist for offering to spy for Iran

Yitzhak Bergel, 46, pleaded guilty to charges of contacting a foreign agent, intent to commit treason and attempting to aid an enemy of Israel.

But the court ruling noted that “no damage had been done to the state”.

Bergel belongs to the anti-Zionist Neturei Karta, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect which is vehemently opposed to the State of Israel’s existence.

Its members believe a Jewish state can only be established by the Messiah.

Tuesday’s court ruling said that in 2011 Bergel flew to the German capital, Berlin, where he contacted the Iranian embassy and offered to collect intelligence about Israel.

He then stayed in contact with Iranian diplomats after returning to Israel.

I’d have to say People’s Temple of the Disciples of Christ certainly ranks up there with the worst of the bad religious movements. Of course, they’re now defunct, and well, we all know why *cough* Jim Jones *cough*.

Can’t forget the Branch Davidians, either - they may be around yet, though most likely even more isolated than they were before.

Aum Shinrikyo was pretty bad, and believe it or not, they’re still around; nowadays, they’re known as Aleph, and they’ve disavowed Shoko Asahara and his nuttiness.

The Raelians are sort of weird…..definitely a UFO religion.

Interestingly, the Nation of Islam and Scientology seem to be merging; at the very least, they are cooperating quite a bit. Farrakhan has called L. Ron Hubbard “Brother L. Ron Hubbard”. That’s an interesting one to watch.

The Moorish Science Temple is another odd bunch…..they seem to be embracing the Sovereign Citizen Movement.

You can thank the shutdown for that. The deadline was originally 1/21, but was pushed back due to the GOP shutdown; the IRS uses the October-December period to prepare for the next year’s tax filing season, updating rates, tables, and incorporating tax law changes as well as confirming e-filing compatibility.

That said, it makes sense for most people to hold off filing until after 1099s are mailed/received in February.

The world is basically religious, atheists being a rather small minority. So there is no observable evidence to support a simple-minded “atheism good, religion bad” viewpoint.

There is also no evidence for an equally simple-minded “religion X good, religion Y bad” viewpoint, as long as X and Y aren’t ridiculous death cult outliers. History shows that the relative levels of civilization in regions dominated by different religions varies over time very significantly. This observation is fatal to theories based on inherent properties of religions making them somehow better/worse.

I like how I can buy a t shirt for 2 dollars, but if I go to the fabric store to assemble my own it’s like $50.

I sewed a lot in my youth because it was cheaper, and the clothes were much better than bought ones if you were a good tailor. Cheap clothes fell apart in no time, so a lot of us sewed.

Have you priced a sewing machine lately? And material? At 17, I remember buying wool jersey for $2/yd and it was 54 in wide. It took 2 yds to make my first dress and only that much because of the way I had to cut the material. And I lined the entire dress to wear without a slip. A size 10 pattern had a 32” bust measurement, iirc. I bought a suit when I was 17 that was nothing like today’s size 5—after all, I weighed 95 lbs and had 32” hips!

It’s only a handful of extremists who are responsible for terrorism, but if you think it’s only a “handful of extremists” responsible for the backward social and legal policies spanning from Libya to Bangladesh, then you are sadly, sadly mistaken.

Of course, only Islam seems to gets the voracious defense to criticism of religion on this site. (It must be that “magical balance fairy” everyone talks about, that automatically requires all religions to be equal in outcome and results.)

FWIW, I haven’t seen many people tarring all Mormons for the views of the extremist polygamist sects of the LDS here.

(The rank-and-file Mormons get tarred for stuff on their own tip, yo.)

re: #321 EPR-radar

The world is basically religious, atheists being a rather small minority. So there is no observable evidence to support a simple-minded “atheism good, religion bad” viewpoint.

There is also no evidence for an equally simple-minded “religion X good, religion Y bad” viewpoint, as long as X and Y aren’t ridiculous death cult outliers. History shows that the relative levels of civilization in regions dominated by different religions varies over time very significantly. This observation is fatal to theories based on inherent properties of religions making them somehow better/worse.

You put more thought into that than Quark has ever put into a comment.

In terms of laws, however, I would not support an abortion ban even if it were directed only to this mythical case of abortion for the hell of it at 36 weeks - 1 day.

With such a law on the books, the RW nut jobs would simply enact a 37 week waiting period and declare victory.

IMO, a reasonable system of medical ethics is sufficient to prevent anything of this kind that really shouldn’t happen.

Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia are life-threatening conditions that can occur during late pregnancy. The pregnancy has to be terminated immediately, by delivery.

Gavrilo Princip (Serbian Cyrillic: Гаврило Принцип, pronounced [ɡǎʋrilɔ prǐntsip]; 25 July [O.S. 13 July] 1894[2] - 28 April 1918) was a Bosnian Serb who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, on the northern end of the Latin Bridge in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.[3] Princip and his accomplices were arrested and implicated by a number of members of the Serbian military, leading Austria-Hungary to issue a démarche to Serbia known as the July Ultimatum.[4] This was used as pretext for Austria-Hungary’s invasion of Serbia, which then led to World War I.[5] Princip was a Yugoslav nationalist associated with the movement Mlada Bosna (Young Bosnia) which predominantly consisted of Serbs, but also Bosniaks and Croats.[6] During his trial he stated “I am a Yugoslav nationalist, aiming for the unification of all Yugoslavs, and I do not care what form of state, but it must be freed from Austria.”[7]

To be fair to Mr. Princip, the causes of WW1 have much more to do with European great power nonsense of the time than with the assassination of the arch-duke.

Still, erecting a monument to an assassin is in bad taste, even for ultra-nationalist idiots.

He’s not even in Congress, and he’s going to to deliver a response? Hah!

Well, that’s going to take away from the Rand Paul response. And the official GOP response by back-bencher Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

And Ted Cruz.

The only thing missing for the GOPers this year is the streaker running across the stage or setting themselves alight.

And the NYT notes that these responses have not done what the speakers have intended - used it as a springboard for the Presidency themselves. The closest one gets is Bill Clinton, who appeared in a documentary-style rebuttal that the Democrats did before they went to a straight speech response.

Several GOPers who’ve done these rebuttals have won nominations, but have lost in the ensuing general election.

So even the higher profile wont help most. It’ll just be drowned out in the cacophony of mindless banter following the SOTU by pundits who want to push their own brand.

422 Gus  Tue, Jan 28, 2014 1:24:50pm

Ah wait. Here’s why the media is ignoring the NC shooting.

Lewis said it is too early in the investigation to know whether the latest shooting involved a gang-related dispute, but Gailliard said there is a widespread suspicion in the community that Monday’s mass shooting was in retaliation for the recent drive-by killing.

also:

“In our community, we do hear gunshots from time to time. But what was different this time was that it was so close and it was so many,” Gailliard said. “I held him in my arms until the paramedics got there. He was shot in the eye and the bullet went out the back of his brain. He was struggling to breathe, but he was fighting.”

The silence is stunning.

Doesn’t your jrrb provide gun insurance?

There was no “school shooting” in Hawaii. Not in the recent “school shooting” sense. This is what happened…

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 17-year-old boy suspected of being an outstanding runaway was shot by police on the campus of Roosevelt High School in Honolulu on Tuesday morning after allegedly stabbing a Honolulu police officer and punching two others, according to Honolulu Police Department officials.

Yep, it’s not as easy as it looks. Stay warm and spend the spring gathering what you need for the next winter. Talk to the neighbors and observe what they do. The North Face makes some really nice cold weather gear. And buy a freaking snowblower dude, the hell with that shoveling crap. Glad to hear you and Winston are safe and well.

After police encountered the young man in a school office, he “became combative” and struck two of the officers, the spokesman said.

The 17-year-old pulled out a knife and “began slashing” the officers, the spokesman said. An officer fired two shots at the boy before subduing him.

Three officers received minor injuries.

Emergency Medical Services Division told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser a 17-year-old boy was shot in the wrist and was taken to the local hospital.

Shocking! How dare those cops…blah, blah, blah.

I don’t miss that shit. It’s pretty in an abstract sense, but my parents had a 200’ side walk that legally had to be shoveled, as well as a 100 foot driveway and turnaround, and 75 feet of driveway going under the carport.

re: #439 Gus

It’s a little worse than that. Not New York snow, but understand, we have practically NO snow removal equipment here, including sand and salt trucks. My husband is 5 miles from home and cannot get here because the roads are totally clogged with people inching their way home. It’s not only snow, there’s a layer of ice under it. If you don’t have rear wheel drive, your car slides all over the place. There’s 3 inches of snow in my yard right now, it’s supposed to stop here in a couple of hours. The road in front of my house has had bumper to bumper traffic for the last 4 hours. Some people have run out of gas and are pulling up on the sidewalks and leaving their cars to walk the rest of their way home.

I’m a bit worried about The Husband, he is a diabetic and needs his meds in a few hours. I just hope he has access to some food.

I have a dirt driveway (pretty much the length of a football field or more), vaguely covered in scattered gravel, with multiple huge bodies of water covering it.
Right now, it’s pretty much ice.
It will stay that way until Spring decides to arrive…

re: #422 Gus

Ah wait. Here’s why the media is ignoring the NC shooting.

Lewis said it is too early in the investigation to know whether the latest shooting involved a gang-related dispute, but Gailliard said there is a >widespread suspicion in the community that Monday’s mass shooting was in retaliation for the recent drive-by killing.

How horrific.

I wonder what a lot of the no-gun-control people would think after they had to hold that boy? It’s real easy to have a tough stand if you never actually have a feel for something like that.

And by feel I will use myself as an example. I’ve never had to hold a child recently shot by a gun. But as an artist with a very active imagination and a deep memory of other accidents and close calls and seeing people scared of death, etc., I can really put myself in that place and “feel” the horror and the sadness, the fear in his eyes. Yes I can imagine it and it freaks me right the hell out.

Sometimes I wish other had that ability to feel something like that, maybe some of the thinking would change.

(shudder)

Some weird bits from the recent ARD Snowden interview:

ndr.de

Q: How narrow is the co-operation of the German Secret Service BND with the NSA and with the Five Eyes?

A: I would describe it as intimate. As a matter of fact the first way I described it in our written interview was that the German Services and the US Services are in bed together.

“Written interview”? A pre-interview?

Q: The question is: does the BND deliver data of Germans to the NSA?

A: Whether the BND does it directly or knowingly the NSA gets German data. Whether it’s provided I can’t speak to until it’s been reported because it would be classified and I prefer that journalists make the distinctions and the decisions about what is public interest and what should be published.

Either this means, “I have no idea, and so I’m BSing here”, or he has placed a truly bizarre constraint on himself, where his bulk dumping is made less egregious because Greenwald and Poitras’ publishing decisions somehow absolves him of responsibility for leaking or putting any effort into vetting his leaks.

Q: Does the NSA spy on Siemens, on Mercedes, on other successful German companies for example, to prevail, to have the advantage of knowing what is going on in a scientific and economic world.

A: I don’t want to pre-empt the editorial decisions of journalists but what I will say is there’s no question that the US is engaged in economic spying.

If there’s information at Siemens that they think would be beneficial to the national interests, not the national security of the United States, they’ll go after that information and they’ll take it.

Again he bizarrely defers to Greenwald / Poitras’ judgement, before proceeding to speculate about Siemens.

Q: did the NSA tape already previous governments including the previous chancellors and when did they do that and how long did they do this for?

A: This is a particularly difficult question for me to answer because there’s information that I very strongly believe is in the public interest. However, as I’ve said before I prefer for journalists to make those decisions in advance, review the material themselves and decide whether or not the public value of this information outweighs the sort of reputational cost to the officials that ordered the surveillance. What I can say is we know Angela Merkel was monitored by the National Security Agency. The question is how reasonable is it to assume that she is the only German official that was monitored, how reasonable is it to believe that she’s the only prominent German face who the National Security Agency was watching. I would suggest it seems unreasonable that if anyone was concerned about the intentions of German leadership that they would only watch Merkel and not her aides, not other prominent officials, not heads of ministries or even local government officials.

And yet again, he defers to GG / LP, and then throws out another stream of innuendo and speculation. I particularly like how he advances the ridiculous notion that Greenwald cares one wit about not damaging US official’s reputations.

Q: How does a young man from Elizabeth City in North Carolina, 30 years old, get in such a position in such a sensitive area?

A: That’s a very difficult question to answer. In general, I would say it highlights the dangers of privatising government functions. I worked previously as an actual staff officer, a government employee for the Central Intelligence Agency but I’ve also served much more frequently as a contractor in a private capacity. What that means is you have private for profit companies doing inherently governmental work like targeted espionage, surveillance, compromising foreign systems and anyone who has the skills who can convince a private company that they have the qualifications to do so will be empowered by the government to do that and there’s very little oversight, there’s very little review.

Now he’s presenting himself as a cautionary tale on the dangers of privatization?

Q: In 2007 the CIA stationed you with a diplomatic cover in Geneva in Switzerland. Why did you join the CIA by the way?

A: I don’t think I can actually answer that one on the record.

So even after fleeing the country with and bulk dumping hundreds of thousands of classified documents he still feigns caring about not disclosing a potentially classified assignment? Though only “on the record” — suggesting he’ll dish once off camera.

Q: Obama asked the Russian president several times to extradite you. But Putin did not. It looks that you will stay to the rest of your life probably in Russia. How do you feel about Russia in that context and is there a solution to this problem.

A: I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that these leaks didn’t cause harm in fact they served the public good. Because of that I think it will be very difficult to maintain sort of an ongoing campaign of persecution against someone who the public agrees serve the public interest.

Greenwald-land keeps insisting no harm has been done. It’s perhaps their weirdest talking point, especially when in the next breath they’re often gloating about the damage (to reputations, foreign relations, US companies, etc).

I have always said—from the beginning—that I think the GG and Poitras roles in this were much greater than anyone is letting on. Certainly Snowden won’t admit it, and no one is questioning G&P that closely.

Also, Snowden refers to himself as “an actual staff officer” in the CIA, which I think is bullshit, but there is no way to refute it (and he knows this) because the CIA will never confirm it. It simply sounds as though he wants you to think he was a part of the CIA the same way as a well-trained, seasoned vet of the spy wars, and there is no way I would believe that because I would have to suspend belief to do so. I think he was somewhere closer to a go-fer than he’d like to admit. Here is a position I found that he may be hinting at, and he would never have fit the qualifications. I am still mystified at how he was able to even get work as a contractor, “genius” or not, unless he somehow was able to lie about his qualifications, and that is a possibility. He’s certainly lied about other things.

Information Assurance Security Professional:

cia.gov

People used to think I was a college graduate because I was well-spoken,, but I was always honest. I never, ever lied on a resume or embellished it to make myself look like something I wasn’t. I don’t think most people do.
