SC Tea Party Senate Debate: A Cornucopia of Crazy (Video)

Anti-science and proud of it
Wingnuts • Views: 23,260

In the same vein as the previous post by Gus about the ludicrous GOP Texas Lt. Governor candidate debates, we turn to South Carolina, where the Tea Party candidates for Senate are also having what they’re optimistically calling a debate. On Planet Tea, however, they basically agree on everything (they have to or they wouldn’t live on Planet Tea), so “debate” means demonstrating their far right extremist creds instead, and boy, do they ever.

It’s an appalling look at the state of the anti-science, fanatically religious nuts who are driving the Republican Party into ditches across the nation. Right Wing Watch reports: South Carolina’s Tea Party Senate Debate: Climate Change ‘Gobbledygook,’ Impeaching Obama, and Revising MLK.

We put together a highlight reel of [candidate Bill] Connor’s commentary during the debate, including his assertions that the Europeans he fought alongside in Afghanistan were less hard-working and ingenious than American soldiers because “Europe had gone socialist” and “post-Christian”; that Congress should impeach President Obama over his executive order implementing part of the DREAM Act; that the separation of church and state has led “atheism to be our national religion”; and that Congress should disband federal appeals courts that enforce church-state separation because “if you’re being biblical, you’re doing your job as a judge.”

YouTube

Another memorable moment was when the moderator asked all four candidates to react to Sen. Graham’s former support for legislation to combat climate change.

The first candidate, businesswoman Nancy Mace, claimed that a recent freeze disproved the fact that climate change exists. Bright contended that climate change was a “scam” concocted by people out to make money. Another candidate, Richard Cash - who owns a “fleet of neighborhood ice cream trucks” —was “open to the idea that there’s possibly global warming,” but claimed that there’s not “enough evidence” yet to create policy. Connor, for his part, called climate change “gobbledygook,” a point he illustrated by asking everybody in the audience to take a deep breath and breathe it out, then telling them, “you’re putting carbon deposits in the air and you’re causing global warming.”

It would make the Hyde Amendment permanent and ban DC from using their money for abortions.

Honestly, I think the only way the tea baggers could get markedly worse would be a large scale embrace of political violence.

Unfortunately, I expect significant deterioration on that front when the tea baggers get sufficiently disappointed —- e.g., one of their own gets the nomination in 2016 and loses badly, or even if the GOP money players get another of their own installed as the nominee.

The only thing that will ever free the GOP from the grip of the RWNJs and teabaggers is the same thing that freed the Dems from the moonbats and hippies — a Mondale-style national beating.

They need to go as far right as possible, nominate a True Believer for POTUS and have that person run a full-blast RWNJ campaign in the general. That way, when that person loses, they can’t blame it on them being a RINO. And maybe then, the national party will get the hint that this toxic shit is a loser for them.

re: #9 Lidane

Is that the one that forces the IRS to audit rape victims to prove they’ve been raped? What a hateful bill.

That’s the one.

[…]

In a play to the Republican base in an election year, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) promised anti-choice activists at the March for Life in Washington, D.C., on January 22 that he would schedule a vote on the bill as soon as possible. On Monday night, the Rules Committee met to put that vote in motion.

Sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), HR 7 would take the unprecedented step of using the tax code to penalize individuals and small businesses for purchasing health insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act that include coverage for abortion services. It would also permanently prohibit the District of Columbia from using its locally generated tax revenue to provide abortion services to low-income women.

[…]

Gone was the provision passed in the version passed by the Judiciary Committee that would have prohibited the use for abortion of the pre-tax dollars in health savings accounts (HSAs), which are special accounts used for health-care expenses. Also removed was a provision that would have prohibited the deduction of the cost of an abortion as a medical expense on one’s tax return. However, the bill now contained a false assertion, Nadler said, that consumers had to pay a special surcharge for abortion coverage purchased through the exchanges.

“We have no idea who made these changes … or why they were made, but they demonstrate the fiction and hypocrisy that underlies the bill,” Nadler said.

[…]

But let’s hear form Alcee Hastings:

“Roe v. Wade was forward-leaning, and HR 7 is backward-leaning,” Hastings said. “For a variety of reasons, some 41 years later, some choose to continue the divisiveness that the issue at hand causes. More than six times in this committee I’ve related that when I was in college, three women had botched abortions, and one with a coat hanger. And those deaths of those three college students that I went to school with sear in my memory every time we bring this subject up.”

But Hastings wasn’t finished. “I know we’ve all heard of Gov. Huckabee’s unfortunate articulations as they pertain to women,” he continued. “I take note of the fact that the whole Republican membership of the Judiciary Committee is male, and … I think men ought to butt out of this subject and be about the business of respecting women and their rights … I hope I’ve offended somebody, because I intended to.”

IMO, the main reason for this calm is that the RWNJs are still close enough to having full federal power peacefully that relatively few are serious about their violence.

I think that things will get dangerous if/when it becomes apparent that full Federal RWNJ power is no longer possible via elections.

Funny thing, I tried to find some mention of this on FR, but it seems to have escaped their notice.

76 Gus  Tue, Jan 28, 2014 3:29:14pm

The crime scene involved three tracts of land, all of which were initially owned by Rodney Black’s parents, Carl Edward and Juanita H. Black. The property was left to Juanita Black upon her husband’s death in 2008. Her last will and testament further split the property in July 2010, with Rodney Black receiving the residence while his sister Judy Ranson administered the estate and its remaining tracts of land.

Ranson, who sold both tracts of land Jan. 15, described herself as being in shock Monday morning. She said her brother typically mowed the lawn and cared for the adjacent properties and was aware of, and dissatisfied with, her decision to sell. The land had been on the market since their mother’s death.

“I cannot believe this happened,” she said. “He knew those lots were up for sale … I think he thought everything belonged to him, but the property was to be sold to pay off my mother’s bills.”

Coby Messier of Albuquerque discusses his unemployment at a Washington, DC press conference.

Shirt will be tucked.

In keeping with the expected theme of President Obama’s State of the Union speech tonight, Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M., has invited an unemployed Albuquerque sheet metal worker to sit with her during the event in Washington.

Coby Messier, 37, is one of eight unemployed Americans who will be in the ornate U.S. House chamber when Obama gives a speech likely to be heavy on the theme of income inequality. As part of that message, Obama is expected to call on Congress to extend unemployment benefits for those who can’t find jobs. Republicans, while open to an extension, have pushed to ensure that the cost of extending federal unemployment insurance be offset with other spending cuts.

Messier, who is making his first trip to Washington, D.C., told me he was employed as a sheet metal worker for 14 years before being laid off in May 2012 - his “first layoff ever.” He said he began collecting unemployment insurance while he looked for work, and managed to find another job in September of that year. He was laid off once again in February 2013 and went on unemployment insurance to help make ends meet during his job search. Messier said he was cut off Dec. 28, 2013 when Congress did not renew to renew the program. For now, his family of four is getting by on his wife’s salary as a public school teacher.

That sounds like a lot to me, but then I’ve been out for some time now. In any case, being a grad student on a stipend is one of the closest things in the modern world to a old-style vow of poverty. Seeing Stanford undergrads drive cars that cost more than several years of stipend was an irritant.

Yep. When I was a grad teaching assistant back in the early to mid 1980s, the stipend was $5/hour plus tuition waiver.
When I did my post-grad fellowship, I didn’t see any actual money, but the dollar value of the fellowship was well in the tens of thousands (the two-week trip to Scotland alone was astoundingly expensive — something like $18,000 for each of us…I could have gotten a better deal than the university got through its regular travel agent).

Northwestern University Athlete Kain Colter Starts Labor Union Movement

For the first time in the history of college sports, athletes are asking to be represented by a labor union, taking formal steps on Tuesday to begin the process of being recognized as employees.

Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, filed a petition in Chicago on behalf of football players at Northwestern University, submitting the form at the regional office of the National Labor Relations Board.

Backed by the United Steelworkers union, Huma also filed union cards signed by an undisclosed number of Northwestern players with the NLRB — the federal statutory body that recognizes groups that seek collective bargaining rights.

ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” first broke the story.

I just came from a business meeting with a guy who was super excited about the politicians trolling our socialist President.

I’m tired, flustered, and missing details.

I think quiche-making is in order. I’ve made exactly two quiches ever, so it’s still kind of an adventure.

Steak n shrimp scampi here. It’s going to be an exciting evening.

Even moved my laptop to the kitchen. It’s ON.

We haven’t had mail delivery, garbage pickup, etc. since 1/18.
Schools have been closed here since last week Monday.
But somehow we’ve managed to muddle through daily life, although I’m really looking forward to being to sleep more than 3-4 hours at a time when I don’t have to get up and feed the woodstove and watch the plumbing so the pipes don’t freeze (that leaving the taps dripping/trickling doesn’t always work…sometimes you gotta gun those taps to blow out the ice that’s building up).

One of my neighbors went to town to get our mail today…it was a huge pile of mail. Best part was the seed catalogs. We are sooo ready to start gardening (time to fire up the greenhouse).

My Dad moved to Port Charlotte (Punta Gorda actually) for good last year. He had been a snowbird, but has made it full time now. He’s a few inches to the left of me, loves the area but summed it up pretty succinctly. “There’s a lot of subtle racism down here, and a good amount that’s blatant.”

I love going down to visit him, but I’m not used to being the youngest person in most gatherings. :)

Decided to go ahead and switch the entire site over to HTTPS, but it will take some work to go through everything. The problem is that if the pages use HTTPS, everything has to be accessed through HTTPS — the images, CSS files, Javascript, Ajax servers, everything — or you don’t get that nice reassuring padlock icon that says it’s a secure page. And what’s more Chrome and Firefox are beginning to actively block “mixed” content because it’s potentially insecure.

So there’s a lot of code to go through, and I’m sure some lurking gotchas await. But I got a nice email from a fellow developer who shared some insights into SSL, and it seems these days the performance hit from using HTTPS is so tiny it’s not really perceivable. After researching it some more, it looks like the increased security from running everything in HTTPS would be worth the effort and time to switch over.

Maybe not important in real world terms, as you say, but important in terms of dignity and respect for the office of the President. He’s us—he represents all of us—for better or worse, like it or not, we collectively elected him TWICE. When we disrespect him we also disrespect ourselves. And yes, as much as I disliked him, this was just as true for G.W. Bush as it is for Obama.

This shit is the beclowning of America and I HATE IT.

re: #233 CuriousLurker

Just finished reading various headlines. Is it just me or has the SOTU been transformed from something serious & dignified to into a three-ring circus complete with sideshow freaks & carnival barkers? I’m beyond disgusted. *spit*

This isn’t a game or a reality show or a small local election, it’s our fricking country—our President talking about our federal government—it’s important.

*climbs down from soap box, kicks it, curses…*

My plan might work for you too.
Ignore everyone but the President. And present company. That way my knuckles stay unbruised, walls without holes and you don’t tear and hair out or facepalm so hard a headache follows. Turn off the TV as the media after game analysis begins it’s first syllable.

Nah. Some of us go to opera for the music. Some go to see a horse shit on the stage.

Plumbing is already starting to freeze, so I’ve got the taps dribbling.

An actual 59 year old congressman.

That’s just fucking shameful.

Louie Gohmert has some serious competition for that “stupidest man in Congress” award.

That my plan. I’ll watch the c-span feed and I probably won’t last through the whole thing. I have no interest in watching the rebuttals.

Yeah—watching. Daughter2 works near that large gray building on the horizon. She is stuck in a hotel within line-of-sight of her office. Some of the staff are overnighting.

hey KT, I’m thinking that even Morning Joe leans just a tad to the right… your Maddow hard on is unseemly. If you gave an iota of the amount of time checking Bill-O that you throw Ms. Maddow’s way, perhaps you might get a wee bit of perspective.
