So the title here just coincidentally managed to match the tone of the GOP responses, right?

Cause all I got from them was the murmuring of the zombie horde, with the same old dead ideas.

To be fair, the official GOP response was not zombie-like, if only because robots don’t qualify as alive to begin with.

The “official” GOP rebuttal was basically the same one they’ve given every other year. I’m pretty sure it’s an ad-lib speech by now: “President Obama promised _______, but Republicans have a plan that accomplishes the same goal while shrinking government.”

Yeah, politicized like this:

We’ll keep slashing that backlog so our veterans receive the benefits they’ve earned and our wounded warriors receive the health care — including the mental health care — that they need. (Applause.) We’ll keep working to help all our veterans translate their skills and leadership into jobs here at home, and we will all continue to join forces to honor and support our remarkable military families.

Cory is here tonight. And like the Army he loves, like the America he serves, Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg never gives up, and he does not quit.

Oh the humanity.

Having an affair, or even sexually harassing an adult co-worker, isn’t the same as passing laws that tell women what they can and can’t do with their own bodies.

The analogy is so incongrous as to be worthless, except as proof that Rand’s piss is pure tea, unlike the other TP impostors he’s trying to get in front of.

Best strategy for beating Hillary is probably not blaming her for things her husband did…20 years ago.

And can we please stop calling 23-year old women (Monica’s age at time of affair) “young girls,” as Paul does? They’re adults, and in Monica’s case a recent college grad. Paul’s attitude smacks of the very condescension to women he claims to be rejecting.

I’m starting to think Christie may survive all this. The original Bridge story looked pretty bad but the pile on accusations have been way over the top. The Sandy aid story looks like it’s not going to pan out. Same with all the “alternative theories”, DKos was accusing him of disconnecting air quality sensors for some nefarious revenge plot or something. It’s become a feeding frenzy of stupid and at this point if the bridge is the only thing that ends up being true then the public might not think much after all the wild accusations.

1999

Around 2:30 A.M., there was a commotion on the dance floor. According to Williams, somebody was shouting, “He’s got a gun!” Following a crowd into the club’s garage, Williams discovered that Grimm and the husband had returned, and Grimm was holding a weapon. Grimm was “carrying on like a madman,” Williams said. “He’s screaming, ‘I’m gonna fuckin’ kill him.’ So I said to him, ‘Who are you?’ He put the gun back in his waist and said, ‘I’m a fucking F.B.I. agent, ain’t nobody gonna threaten me.’ “

71 Gus  Tue, Jan 28, 2014 10:22:16pm

Grimm left the club, but at 4 A.M., just before the club closed, he returned again, according to Williams, this time with another F.B.I. agent and a group of N.Y.P.D. officers. Grimm had told the police that he had been assaulted by the estranged husband and his friends. Williams said that Grimm took command of the scene, and refused to let the remaining patrons and employees leave. “Everybody get up against the fucking wall,” Williams recalled him saying. “The F.B.I. is in control.” Then Grimm, who apparently wanted to find the man with whom he’d had the original altercation, said something that Williams said he’ll never forget: “All the white people get out of here.”

Good luck! I’ve had experience with frozen pipes before in Kentucky, when I lived in old construction. Seems it never got cold enough back in the old days to worry about protecting water pipes from freezing, although one house did have heat tape wrapped around the pipes in a crawlspace.

Come to think of it, those houses weren’t well insulated, either.

88 Backwoods_Sleuth  Wed, Jan 29, 2014 2:26:49am

re: #87 wheat-dogghazi

Yep, I’ve got one of those houses.
There’s heat tape on the kitchen pipes and out in the well pumphouse. There’s that foam on most of the pipes under the floor.

During the polar vortex, one night the bathtub cold water tap froze, the next night it was the bathroom sink cold water tap, the third night it was the kitchen cold water (despite the heat tape!)
Guess the toilet decided it was its turn…

Steve Stockman, ever derpy:

Stockman responds to State of the Union address

WASHINGTON - Congressman Steve Stockman (R-TX 36) issued the following statement Tuesday night:

Tonight I left early after hearing how the President is further abusing his Constitutional powers. I could not bear to watch as he continued to cross the clearly-defined boundaries of the Constitutional separation of powers.

Needless to say, I am deeply disappointed in the tone and content of tonight’s address.

After five years in office Obama refuses to admit his policies have failed. He instead demands we double down on the bitter class warfare that has left Americans jobless and hopeless.

Obama’s plan for higher taxes and more spending is a blueprint for perpetual poverty. The last thing America needs is more of the Democrats’ class warfare that has left our economy a barren landscape.

Even worse, Obama has openly vowed to break his oath of office and begin enacting his own brand of law through executive decree. This is a wholesale violation of his oath of office and a disqualifying offense.

Speaking of Stockman:

On Monday, U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, was found after a month of unknown whereabouts. Or, as his office is trying to spin it, he merely resurfaced and was never actually missing in the first place. Stockman now claims that he simply left the country to participate in an official visit to the Middle East with the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Though the delegation’s leader, U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-California, confirmed Stockman was traveling with committee, Stockman was absent for longer than his other colleagues on the trip, according to the Dallas Morning News. The unaccounted-for vacation days, however, aren’t the only weird thing about Stockman lately. Though the representative is challenging U.S. Sen. and minority whip John Cornyn in the Texas GOP primary in March, his campaign has only $32,000 in cash on hand, along with $163,000 in debt. He has also been slacking off on his day job, having missed 17 straight votes in the House since Jan. 9, according to the Austin American-Statesman. And his campaign has been dodging questions left, right and center — including those about alleged campaign finance violations. While we’re glad the congressman has safely “resurfaced,” we can’t help but long for the day when Texas politicians will make the news for strong governance and not just for strange behavior.

And now for a bit of archeology:

1,500-year-old historic church found under Lake Iznik

The church has been discovered underneath of Lake Iznik in Bursa, a province known as one of the most significant places in Turkey for christians.th is assumed to be church St. Peter’s Church, which Appears in many different sources of Christian history, although no evidence has yet been found to support that.

[…]

According to the information attained so far, the church Consists of three corridors and has the layout of a basilica. This kind of construction was generally in vogue during the Roman period and was used in the courthouse buildings. In AD 313, when Christianity was accepted as the official religion of the empire, practicing Christians started to use the basilica layout for churches as well.

The site extends from east to west and has been determined order to be a church building because there is an apse in the east corner of the building in addition to the fact that the basilica floor plans were Commonly found in churches, Hawk explained.

There’s a picture at the link, in which the lake’s water level looks to be low.

Here’s the area, I believe, at a higher water level.

Speaking of Stockman:

This is the guy from Bloomfield Hills, MI, right?

“Once a homeless college dropout, Stockman served one term in Congress beginning in 1995, then returned last year and has attracted attention with flamboyant rhetoric about impeaching President Barack Obama and promoting gun rights.”

There’s more to that statement than meets the eye, I’ll bet. Even he admits he was partying hearty. But let’s review: He would have been around 30 when all this happened below; he was no kid but an adult, no doubt a spoiled, privileged white boy who couldn’t even stay in college because he was so undisciplined. What would make voters think he has changed any? No doubt he got used to lying at a very early age, and maybe the drugs he used took their toll, but if this is the kind of politician Texas wants, they can keep him down there, not put him in national office.

“From 1985 to 1986, he attended San Jacinto College but dropped out because he suffered from what he called “partying syndrome”. When he was a teenager Police officers allegedly found valium in his possession after a girlfriend allegedly hid the substance in his clothes. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, but the charge was later dropped.[5] He was homeless for a time.[6”

Morning all. Sorry to hear about your toilet feed tube freezing up Backwoods_Sleuth. Hopefully the break in extreme temps over the next few days will allow you to thaw out your house and catch up on your sleep.

The big news today…the weather and ‘professional thug boy Grimm.

As far as the weather. People love to bag on the term global warming when the weather turns as cold as it has. Maybe they will buy into the term climate change. After all, many of the same types of folks didn’t like Obamacare but were fine with the Affordable Care Act.

And as far as Grimm. Boy, what an active sounding last name. I guess he is going to find out just how grim it all will get, as he just opened up the eye of the media and they are going to give him the fine-tooth-comb treatment on his entire career. As Gus has found, it sounds like he has some issues and they will now be a lot larger.

Thanks for posting another tweet from Bozo Fischer. I was going to make a comment the other day that a guy like Fischer is a great example of just the type of job creator he really is. Just look at how successful he has been with being part of a group that sits around all day taking shots at everything they hate and tweeting all the day long. That is a hell of a job. And all in the name of Christianity. Everyone should go out and do the same.

He was a special agent; he started working for them as “support” in 1991 when he got out of college; he got a law degree and worked for them as a special agent for 9 yrs and then the incident in the night club happened, according to Wiki. He claims he left the FBI in 2006.

Southern-style snowstorm: Gridlock, kind neighbors

“Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said early Wednesday that the National Guard was sending military Humvees onto Atlanta’s snarled freeway system in an attempt to move stranded school buses and get food and water to people. Georgia State Patrol troopers headed to schools where children were hunkered down early Wednesday after spending the night there, and transportation crews continued to treat roads and bring gas to motorists, Deal said.”

I also looked at lists of the Pulitzer winners in Fiction, History, Biography, etc. and recognized (and have read) a lot more in those lists.

I think it might be partially that my interests run towards SF, military history, and natural history - which just possibly run against the general categories the ABA awards cover. (Which appears to be analysis of literature and an open bias towards minority and non-mainstream writers and history.)

re: #128 darthstar

Ah, Rep. Grimm from Staten Island. The only GOPer in Congress from NYC.

His girlfriend was indicted on campaign finance charges - the same charges that Dinesh was charged with - bundling funds to go over the cap.

His excuse? He was extremely annoyed with the line of questions.

“I was extremely annoyed because I was doing NY1 a favor by rushing to do their interview first in lieu of several other requests. The reporter knew that I was in a hurry and was only there to comment on the State of the Union, but insisted on taking a disrespectful and cheap shot at the end of the interview, because I did not have time to speak off-topic. I verbally took the reporter to task and told him off, because I expect a certain level of professionalism and respect, especially when I go out of my way to do that reporter a favor. I doubt that I am the first member of Congress to tell off a reporter, and I am sure I won’t be the last.”

Grimm later told the New York Post that he was “annoyed” and was in a rush.

“The reporter took a cheap shot at the end and I verbally took him to task,” Grimm said. “I was angry and I had every right to be.”

He did not deny the balcony-throwing threat.

As if that excuses threatening to throw a reporter off the balcony.

He could simply have said that he had no comment on pending charges/investigation and that would have been the end of it.

Instead, he’s now the story of the night, ahead of the schizophrenic GOP response to the SOTU, or the President’s own words during the SOTU.

Rebranding.

And we’ve only had real cold on a handful of days.

The cold is unusual this year in that it goes much deeper into the South and Mid Atlantic than usual, but places like Alaska and California are experiencing drought and/or above normal temps, and particularly in CA, the lack of precipitation and no snowpack means drought conditions will only get worse as the year wears on.

Much of the Southwest is right back into serious drought conditions, with no sign of easing anytime soon.

A friend of mine’s husband left for his job yesterday afternoon at 3:30. He got to work this morning at 6. It took my husband 3 hours to get the 6 miles from work to home last night. He couldn’t get up the driveway and had to park on the sidewalk in front of the house. Crazy thing is, it’s supposed to get up to 60 by Friday afternoon.

We have no snow removal equipment down here outside of the city and a couple of rural counties up north. Because people have a fucking cow when it’s brought up that maybe some taxes ought to be raised for it. This county practically called for the removal of a politician who said we should have at least salt and trucks in reserve in case something like this happens. Folks down here aren’t big on planning much, unless of course it’s stockpiling guns for some future emergency.

Well, if this had been an extended emergency they would have had the guns available to go loot the neighbors with (or to hold off looting attempts *by* the neighbors.)
//

It is a tricky trade-off though. Paying for seldom-used equipment that you have to store and maintain against an emergency that may never come under your watch. And the associated opportunity cost of what those funds could otherwise provide.

Another dispatch from the Southern Front, from Daughter2’s hotel-room bunker:

“Good Morning. Still staying at the hotel. There is a good chance the roads won’t clear today. I’m sharing a room with a nice woman that used to work for a brokerage firm I’ve worked with (the firm, not her specifically). I got the room last night so she went ahead and reserved it for tonight just in case we need it. A woman came in last night with two small boys that were sick. She couldn’t pay for a room so someone else took care of it. There has been a lot of bunk sharing as all the rooms have a pull out couch. Some people had planned to be here for business and have been great about sharing toothpaste and what not. About the best experience one could hope for under these circumstances.

Some people are going to try the roads today, but a rescue crew stopped in for coffee and said the roads are not just iced over (2 inches of ice in Odenville), but 65, 280, 459 are all parking lots. Cars that died or ran out of gas or wrecked. Lots of cars in ditches and a few in the river. There was a 12 car pile up at Clairmont, downtown I think. A lot of people slept in their cars. Local business were trying to run water out to them.

I’m going to grab some breakfast. Love you lots!!!!! D2

She’s a few hundred yards from her office. (This was to be the first week at a new job.) The grandkid is 10 miles away with the emergency sitter who picked him up yesterday from daycare.

Three words, Alabama: FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. Don’t y’all drive F-150’s?

I’d like to point out that 4-wheel drive is not the end-all in bad weather. Many times people with 4-wheel drive, especially some guys (dudes!) get a little too bold thinking that is the case and you will see them off in a ditch on the side of the road. How did they get there? Well, overconfidence for one. But with 4-wheel if you do break traction you can still slide. And then what happens? They slide into the snow along side the road, the 4-wheel hooks back up and it plows them straight into a culvert or worse.

I drive a small front wheel only but with winter tires. We do get some pretty good snows in Ohio and in all my time using dedicated winter tires on front wheel drive, I have never gotten stuck or slid off the road.

I will admit one time in a parking lot I had to try to drive through a stack of snow that was placed there by the a snow plow and there was no way to turn around in the one-way single lane out of a bank. So I took a big gulp, and tried to drive through it. I ended up high-siding the car on the mound of snow. I wasn’t going anywhere because the tires were not making good contact with anything! Luckily the dudes doing the plowing saw it happen, came back around and put a tow strap on my front cross member and pulled me off. I learned a lot about having a lowering sport suspension and how snow can freeze into a bit of a solid block when it is really cold like now.

Thing is, the weather is not cold.

I’ve experienced one of the warmest winters in my lifetime so far.

The American media seems to revolve around the Eastern time zone - anything else apparently doesn’t matter.

You must be on the west coast.

You will note many of those yelling about ‘global warming’ are mired in the cold on the east coast. And for many it is colder than some of them have been alive. I know here in Ohio, it has been since the early 80s for the cold we’ve had this year.

And if you think about it, you are making a case for using climate change as you are warmer than usual, the east coast is colder than usual.

That may be a damn good reason for using climate change instead of global warming…which was the point.

Thing is though, in the last 5 yrs, we’ve had at least 3 big storms like this one, and there have been really big ice/snow storms before that. So it’s not like this is Hawaii where it never ever snows. This isn’t a poor county either, there’s lots of wealth here, we could afford a few trucks and a place to store a few giant piles of sand/salt. So, as usual, everyone bitches about services that we don’t have because no one wants to pay for them, and it’s everyone else’s fault.

Of course this is the same place where developers build all kinds of shit on a two lane road and then everyone is shocked that traffic snarls up and then they decide the road might need to be widened a tad. I lost half my front yard to that version of planning. Eeek.

And you also get some additional ecological effects that could alternately be considered “good” or “bad”. A number of animals or plants that humans consider pests are not very cold-tolerant and thus might have their numbers trimmed back in the area. On the flip-side some creatures *want* the cold, or a desirable species is the one that is not frost tolerant and is taking a beating.

The problem is that none of these Southern states pre-treated their roads for snow and ice. Why would they? It doesn’t snow around here all that often and when it does, everything falls apart.

Heh. I was downtown earlier (and wouldn’t you know it I forgot one of the things I’d gone for - oh well), and cars and vehicles were moving along as usual. I take a tram to get there; it’s about 30 minutes to the downtown core from where I live. I noticed the tram was more crowded than usual, so I guess a lot of people left the car at home today.

If it gets really bad here in terms of snowfall, like a major snowstorm, then all public transit here is free for the day, which is a solid incentive to leave the car at home and take the tram or the bus.

A quick text compare shows that no lines were directly lifted from Bush’s 2007 speech in the one Obama gave on Tuesday. There are some minor similarities between the two: Obama use a version of the word “opportunity” more than ten times in his speech, Bush used the word at least eight times. Both speeches also ended with a moving story about a wounded veteran.

re: #295 Pie-onist Overlord

Wait, if he cribbed President Bush’s speech (which he didn’t, but let’s go with the paraphrasing for purposes of this intellectual exercise), why was the GOP still opposed to nearly everything contained therein? Oh wait. It’s because President Obama said it. Therefore, it must be bad.

Remember, the GOP cheered throughout the SOTU speech when Bush gave his; they sat on their hands for practically everything Obama said. So, if they were saying the same thing (or paraphrasing the same things), why was the GOP suddenly silent.

The President laid out an agenda that he wants to see done. Some of it can be done without Congress - executive orders, which are a legal way to achieve goals on items that do not require Congressional approval. It’s a perk of the Executive Branch (and many governors have the same powers, including former Gov. Palin, who now bitches about how Obama uses his power, even as GWB used it and Reagan used it - far more often at that).

Obama would prefer if Congress would act, but he knows that the GOP refuses to act - and he called them out for it. He put the onus for legislating where it belongs - on Congress. Their failures have hamstrung the government and make the economic recovery far less robust than it could have been.

Yeah, when Stalin purged the generals from the ranks, it wasn’t by giving them a big retirement ceremony with pomp and circumstance, followed by a comfortable life with a fat pension and federal health care. No, he had a more…direct method of removing those he felt “incompetent” or “insufficiently dedicated” from the ranks.

One of my favorite “motivational messages,” Stalin’s note to a couple of aircraft production managers he thought were slacking on the job:

You have let down our country and our Red Army. You have the nerve not to manufacture IL-2s until now. Our Red Army now needs IL-2 aircraft like the air it breathes, like the bread it eats. Shenkman produces one IL-2 a day and Tretyakov builds one or two MiG-3s daily. It is a mockery of our country and the Red Army. I ask you not to try the government’s patience, and demand that you manufacture more ILs. This is my final warning. (emphasis added, perhaps redundantly)

Production tripled almost literally overnight.

Yep; that’s one hell of a motivational message. When you read it, you’ll shit bricks!

No, some Air Force Officers are wingnuts, as evangelicals are thick on the ground in Colorado Springs and its made an impact at the Air Force Academy. Wingnuts might actually LIKE Lubbock or at least feel at home there. If you want to punish a wingnut, you’d have establish an office, not a base but an office in San Francisco. With a few mods and some progress we can get single-payer for health and the equivalent for retirement/pension where regardless of employer the contributions go into the same account rather than ending up chasing 3-4 programs around*.

* - Of course it is unlikely to happen since it’s still too fun and profitable to play games with pension funds and distributions.

The problem is that the program will need Congress to pass legislation to bring it into being and its going to trigger some infighting when it gets there. Moreover, the budget levels for the coming fiscal year have already been set, so the president will need to propose acceptable non-defense offsets to make-up the difference.

Not necessarily. The MyRA appears to be some kind of bond program, which doesn’t necessarily require Congressional action. It could be done administratively.

myRA appears “similar to an idea Treasury officials have studied for several years, which would create something called an R-bond, allowing employees to have a certain amount of money deducted from each paycheck and directed toward a specific investment.”

That’s nuts; I can’t even imagine that.

I lived in the Portland, OR area for a number of years, and anything more than one or two inches of snow, and it was pretty much the end of the world. What compounds the problem in that particular area is freezing rain and black ice, which I detest profoundly. We had a freezing rain storm here last winter; I flatly refused to go outside - it’s far too dangerous. Walking on snow, you have at least some traction. Not on ice. I do have shoe-spikes which I can put on over my boots, but I still prefer to avoid it entirely.

According to the GOP the real victims in this world are white christian men. They are not wrong in feeling like they are getting the short end of the legilative and social policy stick. Over the last 60 years or so, no one group has seen more power and priviledge taken away from them than white Christian men in America. The difference is one of perception and perspective. For rational people, white, male Christian privelege was a historical injustice perpetuated generation after generation by force, religion, and later by legislated and social inequality, Over the last 150 years, much has been done toward leveling the playing field. More that in the thousands of years preceeding. Those changes while incomplete and insufficient have made life more challenging for white christian men (not compared to others- but compared to their past experience). Rational folks understand the job is not finished, and that White Christian Men should occupy no greater position than anyone else by birth right. These lunatics on the right will continue to push back to keep or restore some sense of that privilege. They will do so through legislation and through pushing Christian dogma on us and liekly through the use of force when they feel it is required.

I don’t have to see anything. There is no correlation between attaining a doctorate of ophthalmology and public policy expertise. So after getting in a reporter’s face last night and threatening to throw him off a balcony, Grimm today issues an apology and Boehner doesn’t waste time slamming the lid shut on the matter. But Peter King actually suggested that it would hurt Grimm with voters back home for “backing down.”

Peter King is never wrong./

RIP.

Did it ever occur to that dumb fucker that not all women get pregnant or want to get pregnant. Yeah maternity leave is a nice benefit. It’s also one that fuckwads like Carlson fought against having in the first place. Most of the progress we have today in work related benefits is in spite not because of conservative reactionaries like Tucker and the people on FNC. If these people had their way, the 40 hour work week would still be a dream.

It goes against their family values-based notion that women should be at home raising kids and not working at all…

I don’t have to see anything. There is no correlation between attaining a doctorate of ophthalmology and public policy expertise. I can go out tomorrow and start working on attaining said doctorate eventually become and ophthalmologist. It’s all done by rote. Read, review, recite, study and memorize. Pass the tests, know the procedures, and know how to perform the tasks attributable to one’s degree or license. It’s just like being a good carpenter or transmission mechanic.

Sure, but that can’t make you a decent human being, as my employer was.

Heh - fake hillbilly:

This was written by Charlie Daniels when he voted Democratic:

“A poor girl wants to marry, And a rich girl wants to flirt.
A rich man goes to college, And a poor man goes to work.
A drunkard wants another drink of wine, And a politician wants a vote.
I don’t want much of nothin’ at all, But I will take another toke.

‘Cos I ain’t askin’ nobody for nothin’,If I can’t get it on my own.
If you don’t like the way I’m livin’,
You just leave this long-haired country boy alone”

Then he got religious. He played with another group I got roped into going to see about 20 yrs ago and stood up there telling everyone about how he had been “saved”…

Maybe VB should have made an Eskimo Pie for National Pie Day.

Maybe she couldn’t find enough Eskimos to make a proper filling? I understand they’re really hard to prepare.

re: #404 Lidane

You can also add in that the governments in the South just won’t budget for this. Atlanta itself has 120 or so pieces of snow removal equipment. The rest of the state maybe has that much combined. Ask people to pay a bit more in revenue to pay for these things and they throw a fit. Then when stuff like this happens they have another fit because there’s no services. And the chickenshit politicians here won’t clarify that point to people either, because if they do, they get the Tea Party treatment. Morans.

re: #397 Ian G.

The snow-experienced northerner in me is shaking his head in disbelief over how little snow has snarled Georgia and Alabama, but I’m most certainly NOT acting that way over what coastal NC and the Tidewater VA got. Those were legitimate snowstorms in any part of this country.

In January 2000, due to ice & snow, GA DOT closed down the interstates and roads thru Atlanta the Friday & Saturday before Super Bowl Sunday, which was played in Atlanta, GA.

Which made NFL Commisioner’s Party (Friday NIght), Merchandising and Corporate Party (Saturday Night) logistics difficult. In order to get around the city after the shutdown, you were required to get police escort.

The Merchandising party for 3,500 guests, was originally to be held in East Point (maybe 10 miles from downtown), which meant you had to deal with 2 different police agencies for escorts due to ‘turf issues.” [We can only escort you to our city limits, the adjacent police agency will then assume escort] WTF

No coordination between GA public safety agencies in 2000 in spite of the emergency conditions. Hope they have their act together better this time.

Is this the Staten Island politician who cussed out and then physically removed a foreign video crew from, his office, who attempted to tape an “ambush interview” some years ago?
