Misogyny Is a Winning Formula for Mike Huckabee

What’s wrong with the right?
Politics • Views: 24,028

Would you be surprised to learn that Mike Huckabee’s weird, disturbing statement that women use birth control because they “can’t control their libido” was wildly popular among the right wing base? No?

Poll: Huckabee Is Now the GOP’s Top Choice for 2016 After Libido Remark.

The latest survey from Democratic PPP released Wednesday showed the former Arkansas governor surging among Republican voters nationwide in the wake of his head-scratching comment about the female libido.

According to the poll, 16 percent of GOP primary voters said they would prefer to see Huckabee as the party’s presidential nominee in 2016, making him the top Republican in the field. Only a month ago, PPP showed Huckabee polling at 11 percent and trailing both New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) among GOP voters.

In preservation of sanity and faith in humanity it is a bit of a relief to note that it is only 16% of a diminishing Republican party of old white dude fundies who think Huck is their go-to guy. But yeah, even that is fucking creepy.

Part of me tries approach the Huck’s newfound popularity from the POV that it’s way too early for this nonsense, and the poll itself is ultimately meaningless.

Then it occurs to me that if Republicans and conservatives actually had any sense of shame, or grip on reality, someone like Huckabee would never, ever be on a POTUS nominee short list. Ever.

This is why I get so frustrated with the resident conservative or “right of center” commenters here. I would just love to see how they would hand wave this one away.

Mention of the Donner Party reminded me of the famous Republican cannibal Alferd Packer. At Packer’s sentencing, the judge reportedly said,

Stand up you voracious man-eatin’ sonofabitch and receive your sentence. When you came to Hinsdale County, there was seven Democrats. But you, you ate five of ‘em, goddam you. I sentence you to be hanged by the neck until your’re dead, dead, dead, as a warning against reducing the Democratic population of this county. Packer, you Republican cannibal, I would sentence you to hell but the statutes forbid it.

Alas, the quote is apparently not accurate, but it is a fact that there are still very few Democrats in Hinsdale County.

Sort of on-topic, then.

A few years ago, my niece was a victim of domestic violence. A broken jaw was just one of her several injuries. Treatments included prescription drugs for pain. This lead to addictions to some of them —including oxycontin —for which slut-shamer Rush got a slap on the wrist, and renewal of his multi-million dollar contract.

My niece wasn’t so lucky. When her prescriptions ran out, the addictions didn’t, so she was victimized again by our decades-long war on drugs. It’s my understanding that one of her X’s was pressured to participate in the entrapment/sting operation. After conviction, and serving several years in prison, she was released recently. She died yesterday. I’ve been informed it was apparently an overdose of something.

Just shoot me, Huckabee.

From Hezbollah’s 1986 manifesto:

We are an ummah linked to the Muslims of the whole world by the solid doctrinal and religious connection of Islam, whose message God wanted to be fulfilled by the Seal of the Prophets, (i.e., Prophet Muhammad [s.a.a.s]). … As for our culture, it is based on the Holy Qur’an, the Sunna and the legal rulings of the faqih who is our source of imitation.

Now let’s play with some words.

We are a community linked to the worldwide body of the Christian faith by the solid doctrinal and religious connection of Christianity, whose message God brought to Earth through His begotten Son, Jesus Christ. As for our culture, it is based on the Holy Bible, the Constitution, and the profound wisdom of the Founding Fathers, who are our source of imitation.

That is essentially the message of the wingnuts, and that message is the same.

Party of God is entirely appropriate.

People were bitching about traffic jams on the Upper East Side though. Even though most of that was due to an accident on the 59th Street Bridge causing issues with plows getting through.

Most everywhere else was in decent shape.

But that’s not to say that there haven’t been problems - like when the LIE froze over and turned into a parking lot of its own, or that folks had exceptionally long commutes.

We can handle snow. We can handle lots of snow, when it’s spread out. We can’t handle heavy snow during rush hour. That only complicates things.

But not having plows or salt spreaders to deal with weather conditions? That’s just poor planning.

119 Gus  Wed, Jan 29, 2014 12:14:34pm

They’re always talking about road fatalities during snow events. They fail to note however that fewer people die on the roads during snow storms because there’s fewer people on the road and people drive at lower speeds. Some of the worst periods are during summer holiday weekends and fall/winter evenings between 6PM and 9PM.

Alternate viewpoint: that’s totally reasonable planning, because this sort of event is rare.

What’s poor is stuff like this [Atlanta Mayor]:

No you are not. And that’s okay! Seattle isn’t ready for a freak hurricane, either! I hope they wouldn’t pretend otherwise with one bearing down on them.

From this goober’s press release:

To maintain safe driving conditions, the Department of Public Works will pre-treat priority bridges and routes. The City has a total of 30 spreaders and 40 snow plows ready for mobilization. With 700 tons of sand/gravel mix on hand, we will use spreaders to treat priority bridges and address any emergencies that may arise. Beginning early Tuesday morning, two 20 person crews will work 12-hour rotational shifts beginning at 7:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2014 - 7:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 29, 2014. The city also has access to emergency on-call contractors as needed.

There are 200 miles of priority route roadways including 40 bridges, six hospitals, and 16 Police Precincts inside the City of Atlanta.

200 miles… probably 800-1000 lane-miles easily. Forty plows.

Hmm. 1000/40… I can do that math. That’s one pass, one, every 24 hours.

Your citizens wouldn’t have gotten their asses stuck in traffic for ten hours if you hadn’t told them hilariously naive nonsense about your infrastructure’s ability to deal with the problem. Everyone would have stayed home, like they damned well should have.

What a joke.

Zedushka and I were driving on the I-80 two years ago, coming back from a trip to NY when it started to get dark and scary, so I pulled off the road and we checked into a motel for the night.

And then this happened.

I-80 in Pennsylvania is notorious for that. The highway runs east-west in an area that often seems to be roughly on the snow-rain line for fronts. So I-90 (or the newer I-86) to the north will be all snow while I-76 (PA turnpike) farther south will be all rain. In addition the highway has to get across all the mountain and ridge lines and thus there are a few nasty wind gaps with heavy crosswinds and also some micro-climate areas where normally benign weather conditions elsewhere are actually nasty there.

I tend to avoid I-80 in the winter if at all possible. But in warmer weather it is a somewhat pleasant drive.

May I suggest that once you get the inlet piped thawed out, that you adjust the tank float so that is keeps the water running. Excess water will run down the overflow tube into the bowl and after it reaches a certain level, will automatically drain. That should help keep it from freezing up again.

Are people forgetting that Huckabee was a preacher? He has brought that whole attitude forward to politics, in fact, it informs his politics in huge ways.

Anyone who would vote for a preacher, past or present, has a screw loose. But I’m an equal opportunity choicer in that regard—no other religious leader would qualify for my vote, either, no matter who they were.

Keep church and state separate, and that goes for anyone for whom I vote, from local politics on up.

Not snowing here. Had about another 2 inches the day before. No accumulations. Haven’t had anything over 6 inches. Been snowing at least once a week. 2 inches or so. 51 today. Got a sweater and a fleece jacket on. Watch cap. My legs are cold as are my feet. Still gets really cold at night. Winter is a disgusting time of year.

Heh. A couple of years back, I was dating a girl who, unknown to me, was absolutely terrified of butterflies. I discovered this when we went to an arboretum, and in one of the little buildings, it was filled with butterflies, all fluttering about.

She became nervous after a few minutes, and when one landed on her, well…….game over.

She ran out of there screaming like her hair was on fire. When I came out, she was sitting on a bench, shaking uncontrollably.

re: #153 Bubblehead II

May I suggest that once you get the inlet piped thawed out, that you adjust the tank float so that is keeps the water running. Excess water will run down the overflow tube into the bowl and after it reaches a certain level, will automatically drain. That should help keep it from freezing up again.

yep…that thought occurred to me after the fact.
I was so freakin tired last night and all I could think of was “what a time to have fixed that leaky float problem…”

yes, I can be that braindead to not have thought to just move a link or two on the float chain…

No icky watch caps. No short days and long nights. No freezing drafts that feel like a small breeze. No head feeling ice cold. No cold legs. No cold feet. Winter. Sucks.

I’m holed up here on the farm. My young & crazy neighbor went to town to pick up our mail yesterday.
Right now, I haz a grumpy because despite all my best efforts and srsly interrupted sleep pattern to keep the plumbing from freezing, the inlet pipe to my toilet froze sometime before 3 a.m. Now I’m afraid to go to sleep in case the damned thing finally decides to burst.
At least all the other plumbing is behaving what with the constantly dribbling taps. Tonight’s forecast low is above zero for the first time in days, but we don’t get above freezing until Friday.

Ahhh, the joys of backwoods living…

I am woefully ignorant about frozen pipes so this could be a stupid question - is there anything other than letting water dribble from the faucet that can alleviate the freeze? Although it sounds kinds fun to be holed up like that, I’m sure you must be getting some serious cabin fever and having to worry about pipes freezing takes a bunch of the fun away. Please stay safe and as warm as you can.

re: #145 EPR-radar

Even if a loon like Huckabee is the GOP nominee in 2016, a Mondale-type loss in the election would not happen.

So it is hard to see the GOP taking a loss of sufficient magnitude to cause it to change its ways.

But even if they lose it would be different from what they claim. They INSIST a truly conservative candidate would ALWAYS win. If the polls showed him losing, I’m sure they would all of a sudden find reason to call him a RINO. Conservatives don’t take responsibility for anything.

1:19 p.m., Jan. 29 — Misonceptions abound that parliament is considering legal amnesty for people who have committed serious crimes. That’s not the case, says opposition leader Arseniy Yatseniuk, the leader the Batkivhshchyna Party led by imprisoned ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. He said that murder, attacks on journalists, abductions and torture are all categories of crimes that will not be exempt from punishment. Murderers will continue to be punished. So will officers who attack journalists. So will anybody who kidnaps, assaults or tortures. Yatseniuk said that the opposition considers as unacceptable the ruling party’s demand that street demonstrations end before agreeing to grant amnesty to EuroMaidan participants detained for non-serious crimes. Parliament will reconvene at 2 p.m. today to discuss the amnesty provisions to be adopted into law.

Under the amnesty also be covered cases involving attacks on journalists: “No officer, any police officer will not be covered by amnesty if he committed the attack on journalists.” — Brian Bonner

In 1984, Mondale carried only a single state + DC, and was nearly 20 points behind in the national popular vote.

If the GOP were to lose on that scale (which it richly deserves to do), the worst excesses of the conservative movement would likely be drummed out of the party by the big $$$ faction.

However, the GOP can’t experience a loss of this magnitude. There are a bunch of red states that would be impossible for the GOP to lose, and nation-wide there is a big problem of people voting GOP without themselves being as bug-eyed nuts as the GOP has become.

THIS.

The Democrats are hardly perfect. I’ve got my own issues and disagreements with them. But at least they acknowledge things like reality, science, reason, history, and every bit of social progress that humans have made since Gutenberg invented movable type. That’s huge bonus for them.

If everyone remembers, Big Bill Clinton was one of the first Centrist Democrats and supported Big Business a lot more than Democrats previously. There was a reason for that.

After the crash and burn times of Carter not holding for a second term and Mondale and Dukakis the Democrat party came to realize that being far left was no longer going to work for the Presidency. Also, Ron Reagan started to take the Republican party a bit more far right than before and that worked for them for two cycles. By the time Bush 1 came around it seemed the Republicans could run a guy off the street and beat the Democrats. Also during Bush 1 times, Rush Limbaugh went national and became a force for carrying Republican water.

So as the Republicans became more and more far right driven by people like Rush being a day-to-day campaigner and creating “ditto heads” the Democrats realized that as they moved from the left, the middle was more open. Big Bill came in and filled that middle and at the point it seemed the Democrats would be very successful occupying the middle and actually speaking for more and more of the country.

Then came 2000 and Bush 2 came along and for a bit it seemed he would shift back to the middle a bit more with his “compassionate conservative” spiel and everyone knows what happened. Gore and Bush 2 literally tied.

But Rush never stopped and along came even more Republican far right media with FOX News, Glen Beck and a whole host of Little Limbaughs and of course Bush 2 snuck by Kerry with a huge slime campaign driven by that new crazy conservative media.

But that may have been where the Republicans became too punch drunk on crazy far right thinking it would be easy using their new media and a host of slime specialists like the Swift Boaters.

What seemed to have happened though is they abandoned the real middle centrists people (like me and I suspect many here at LGF) and stayed drunk on crazy and the centrists folks just got sick and tired of their crap.

Then an African American guy with a good deal of speaking ability and a visage of being the future new America of color came along and out-Clinton-ed a Clinton and swept an election by again taking a middle stance and bringing the new America of color with him.

And it appeared to scare the bejeebers out of the right which lost out with their own flawed middle-man McCain who was stupid enough to try to appease the far right loons and the now very political Christians with Sister Sarah Palin.

So what did the Republicans do when Obama won? They went nuts. They tried to go back centrist and appease the nuts who now were concerned about not being far right enough with McCain. The wanted their cake and tried to eat it too. They invited in the new Tea Party by astro-turfing them with big bucks and played to them to the point they created a far right monster. No one in the middle likes the monsters.

As the most recent election proved, a flawed centrist Romney who was never going to meet the needs of the crazy right Tea Party sent signals to America that the Republicans were out of control and off the rails. Clueless to it all, they still seem to think they can still have their cake and eat it too and now they are fractured badly and it appears have no clue how to bring it all back to the center which now also has more females with power and people of color too.

Can the Republican come back to attract what they used to have made-in-the-shade during the 80s? Who the hell knows, but if they do not do some major purging and signal they will try to be reasonable and realize women and people of color now strengthen the middle and they need to attract them they will be in the same position as the Dems were in the 80s antionally…no one really giving them the time of the day.

So, here we are. How do most of the LGF members (centrist pretty much) see the Grand Old Party? Every here probably knows the general tone.

The Republicans have big problems. And as long as they keep tweeting with the twits, trying to back away and still keep Rush, FOX and the Tea Party happy they appear to be broken in many pieces as last night showed us all too well.

As many here seem to feel (not all, but they too better read the Tea leafs) the only hope is to purge, purge and purge some more. But can they?

Not with a bumbling director like RNC PR BS and a still yapping FOX and Limbaugh. They really (to me and I suspect others) need to start the purge with Rush, Roger Ailes and Priebus. It would be a shock to the system and it might still keep them off the rails for a bit, but maybe in an other two or so cycles they might be able to come back and fight for the new more female and full of people of color middle or just flat give it all up.

And if they lose the house in 2014, as difficult as that may be, but not out of reason, they can put paid to the party for a long time.

It is all there in History! And we all know what happens when you forget history.

If the GOP loses the House and fails to regain the Senate this November, the freakout will be of epic proportions.

I do believe it’s far more likely the GOP will retain the House, albeit with a lowered majority - perhaps as few as a five seat majority. I don’t think they’ll take the Senate, I will concede, there’s a small possibility of the Democrats retaking the House.

An electoral debacle for the GOP come 2016 - a strong likelihood, in my opinion - will be the death knell for the GOP as a national party unless they purge the wingnuts.

And if they lose the house in 2014, as difficult as that may be, but not out of reason, they can put paid to the party for a long time.

It is all there in History! And we all know what happens when you forget history.

I think we have to be careful here.

I don’t think the Democratic Party itself has ever been “far left” unless you think civil rights, the safety net and support of unions is “far left” and I don’t. Carter was definitely no “far leftist”; he simply wasn’t a very good president and the country suffered through oil shortages and awful inflation during his tenure, resulting in higher than normal unemployment. That is what really set the stage for Reagan.

The fact is, that after 2 Reagan terms (staged managed by his advisers to a large degree), the Republican Party started going even more right, esp after the older Bush proved not to be as far to the right as the party wished. After Clinton’s 2 terms, and in spite of his more centrist positions on many issues, the Republican Party went even further to the right and we got George Bush, another figurehead (IMHO) who did the will of the Neocons like Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc, giving us Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11 and setting up privatization of many, many govt services. This privatization had really started under Reagan and stalled a bit, but Bush brought the idea into full flower.

At any rate, the disgust and anti-war attitudes that came during that period set us up for Barack Obama, who seemed like a breath of fresh air in the squalid stink of DC and its warmongering and profiteering. That he turned out to be more of a centrist Democrat on some issues, given the problems he inherited isn’t much of a surprise, really. It was important to keep institutions in place and this is what he was able to accomplish, to his credit.

The fact is, the GOP has gone so far right in many areas because of Obama’s election that it has smeared its own name for decades. I don’t think there is much to fear from them unless World War III erupts any time soon. It’s the Democrats who seem “moderate” and “centrist”, even though their programs are pretty much in the same vein as they’ve always been.

Putin puts the squeeze on Ukraine: Russia to await new Ukraine government before fully implementing rescue-Putin

President Vladimir Putin raised the pressure on Ukraine on Wednesday, saying Russia would wait until it forms a new government before fully implementing a $15 billion bailout deal that Kiev urgently needs.

A day after Prime Minister Mykola Azarov resigned on Tuesday, hoping to appease the opposition and street protesters, Russia tightened border checks on imports from Ukraine in what looked like a reminder to Yanukovich not to install a government that tilts policy back towards the West.

I think I’ve lost most of the perennial plants in my garden. My lavender looks like it didn’t make it, I’m pretty sure the lemon thyme is gone, so it the catnip. I’m not sure about the Shasta daisies and black-eyed Susans. I guess I won’t know til spring. We’ve had several days where the temps went below 20, which isn’t good for plants not used to that level of cold. On the upside, maybe the cold will kill some of those hideous little stinky beetle things that came here from Asia (I think), they’re bronzed color about the size of a lady bug. They infested the vegetable garden the last few years, I hope they’re gone.

Hey, I had lavender, thyme, rosemary and they survived NC winters. I have some in pots on my balcony and they survived in those, too. The daisies should make i. I had many perennials (I naturalized my son’s front yard) and they always survived.

If you see labor as merely another commodity to be minimalized to reduce costs, then you can buy all these arguments against minimumwage, equal pay or collective bargaining.

But if a society places any social value on labor as part of human dignity and freedom: namely the ability to earn enough to support oneself and one’s family from a full-time job, then we need to have labor laws in place that recognize this view of labor.

Normally I would dismiss the call to skip AIPAC as a silly suggestion that ain’t gonna happen. I think it’s unlikely but still a possibility. I would argue that these are the people Obama should reach out to but it’s not out of the question that Obama might skip AIPAC. Things are changing and our traditional international roles and allies aren’t going to last forever.

I think it’s important that he does attend this year. My guess right now would be that he will attend or someone else from his administration will attend. This could be either John Kerry, Joe Biden or someone else. Someone should attend. As for “Open Zion” I barely pay attention to them anymore. I follow J Street on Twitter but stopped receiving their email notices. AIPAC as you know is distorted by the usual suspects.

And I don’t think they’ve worked out the consequences of what happens when you totally treat labor as a commodity (and minimize the cost) *and* do not compensate via a social safety net. You end up with a massive and increasingly desperate underclass that eventually realizes it has nothing to lose. And then you have to invest all that money you saved in fortifications and mercenaries to protect yourself and your assets.

And then you wake up one morning and the mercenaries have decided to run things themselves rather than be treated as another commodity to be underpaid and treated like crap.

Office supplies; that pretty much sums up that line of thinking on the cons/libertarians part: Human beings are nothing more than office supplies.

So, I found a new author (new to me) Don DeLillo.

Anyway in one part of his book Underworld an old man character states that we don’t want the Cold War to be over. The Cold War is what keeps America great and old white men in control. Everything will fall apart, he says, if the Cold War Ends.

“You won’t be able to look a a women on the street and have an erotic thought” if the Cold War ends.

Viewed in the light of current events, I think that character is on to something.

Yep, exactly.

In my years of doing legal secretary work, it wasn’t uncommon for legal fees to be ultimately more expensive than the eventual negotiated settlement.

I never worked in medical malpractice, but I don’t see why that would be any different than other legal fields.

Yeah, depending on the state, that can be the case. In NC, a tort claim can be settled out of court and no more than 33% charged in fees (most are on a contingency basis). Depending on how far up the court system a case gets, it’s usually 40% at the district level. Some lawyers may eat the costs if they’re not that much, but the trend was to charge for every phone call, copy, and postage stamp when I left the business.

When it came time for the Super Bowl, Clemmie Greenlee was expected to sleep with anywhere from 25 to 50 men a day. It’s a staggering figure, but it doesn’t shock advocates who say that the sporting event attracts more traffickers than any other in the U.S.

“The Super Bowl is the greatest show on Earth, but it also has an ugly underbelly,” Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott told USA Today in 2011 when his state was gearing up to host the event. “It’s commonly known as the single largest human trafficking incident in the United States.”

The influx of fans fosters the optimal breeding ground for pimps looking to boost their profits. Experts say that the sheer number of men looking to pay for sex substantially increases demand and the massive crowds allow for pimps and victims to essentially go unnoticed.

- - CUT - -

I agree. I was using popular terminology for what most people today see as far left. That also goes to what I was saying…anything past the center is seen as far left when it really isn’t. That is because the right has gone so far right anything that is now middle right is really the old classic GOP. Anything middle left is looked at like they are the SDS or the Weathermen!

You must be one of those ol’ original hippie types from the real 60s that knew what left really is. And I mean that not as any dig at you. I hope you do not take offense. Plus, I seem to recall you posting that in your younger days you were a tad bit of a radical.

That is also why I believe you are so good at covering the current Ukraine mess.

Well, I was a bit older than the student hippie types, but yes, I was something of a radical, more so in the women’s movement, probably because I had kids to support. That led me to other politics as well, and a greater understanding of how the world really works and who benefits, no matter what system is in place. I consider myself pretty much of a democratic socialist these days.

I don’t think it’s likely that there will be a purge in the GOP ranks. Rather I think there will be an exodus of the sane away from the GOP. It’s already begun (see Lidane’s #171 and Wagner is not the first). It’s just a trickle for now but as the crazy train speeds up , I think the pace of the exodus will increase until all that’s left of the GOP will be raving wingnuttery.

IMO, the real question is where the exiles land. Do they go to the party that is centrist in reality but is still tainted by the the far left reputation of its past? Or do they try to form a new party in the middle?

I don’t think the Democrats have ever been far left, so that reputation is one of the many fictions inflicted on us all by the rise of the US extreme right.

We haven’t had a disappearance/emergence of a major political party in the US since the Civil War era. Since then, the Democrats and Republicans have both changed rather than become irrelevant. It will be interesting to see how this model breaks now that change is anathema to the GOP (unless said change is finding ever more creative ways to be rabidly ‘conservative’).

You may be right and I agree. I happen to think it will be tough to bury the Republican name. A new party might just be way too radical on typical political sensibilities.

We did come sorta close to having a kernel of an Independent Party, but that went kaput in the early 80s. Anyone remember John B. Anderson who ran as an independent in the 80 election? Many at that time thought his run would bring about a real independent party. As the polls are now showing…many people are escaping the Republican ranks and calling themselves Independents…so maybe that name for a party will pop out.

My area is particularly bad for human trafficking because we’re right along the I-10 corridor (Texas-Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama-Florida). That corridor not only allows access to a number of major cities (Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile, Pensacola and Jacksonville) it also happens that I-10 is the interstate that runs closest to the U.S./Mexico border. So you can see why the traffickers like it.

Add in two major sea ports (one in Mississippi, one in New Orleans) and any number of casinos and you’ve got a pretty ripe situation when it comes to human trafficking.

Establishment Republicans will never abandon the brand.

Many already are.

Former Nevada Lieutenant Gov. Sue Wagner told the Reno Gazette-Journal that she has left the Republican Party because she thinks hardline conservatives have pushed the party too far to the right.

According to the paper’s Tuesday report, Wagner — who has also served as a state senator, assemblywoman, and gaming commissioner — is now registered as a nonpartisan voter rather than as a Democrat.

“It’s grown so conservative and tea-party orientated and I just can’t buy into that,” Wagner said. “I’ve left the Republican Party and it’s left me, at the same time.”

Her action comes despite a long-time family connection to the party.

Last week it was GOProud’s Jimmy LaSalva.

A few months ago, Texas Judge Carlos Key.

These were all establishment Republicans, but they are also minorities. The Tea Party is a parasitic infection that will distill down the GOP to its most racist, revanchist core, but it isn’t going to leave on its own. The Tea Party needs the existing fundraising channels that the GOP national committee has built, whereas the establishment conservatives could probably either take those channels with them or rebuild them easily if they left and were to form a new, separate party.

A double barrel of human evolution articles appeared today:

The genomic landscape of Neanderthal ancestry in present-day humans

Genomic studies have shown that Neanderthals interbred with modern humans, and that non-Africans today are the products of this mixture. The antiquity of Neanderthal gene flow into modern humans means that genomic regions that derive from Neanderthals in any one human today are usually less than a hundred kilobases in size. However, Neanderthal haplotypes are also distinctive enough that several studies have been able to detect Neanderthal ancestry at specific loci. We systematically infer Neanderthal haplotypes in the genomes of 1,004 present-day humans. Regions that harbour a high frequency of Neanderthal alleles are enriched for genes affecting keratin filaments, suggesting that Neanderthal alleles may have helped modern humans to adapt to non-African environments. We identify multiple Neanderthal-derived alleles that confer risk for disease, suggesting that Neanderthal alleles continue to shape human biology. An unexpected finding is that regions with reduced Neanderthal ancestry are enriched in genes, implying selection to remove genetic material derived from Neanderthals. Genes that are more highly expressed in testes than in any other tissue are especially reduced in Neanderthal ancestry, and there is an approximately fivefold reduction of Neanderthal ancestry on the X chromosome, which is known from studies of diverse species to be especially dense in male hybrid sterility genes. These results suggest that part of the explanation for genomic regions of reduced Neanderthal ancestry is Neanderthal alleles that caused decreased fertility in males when moved to a modern human genetic background.

Second:

Resurrecting Surviving Neandertal Lineages from Modern Human Genomes

Anatomically modern humans overlapped and mated with Neandertals such that non-African humans inherit ~1-3% of their genomes from Neandertal ancestors. We identified Neandertal lineages that persist in the DNA of modern humans, in whole-genome sequences from 379 European and 286 East Asian individuals, recovering over 15 Gb of introgressed sequence that spans ~20% of the Neandertal genome (FDR = 5%). Analyses of surviving archaic lineages suggests that there were fitness costs to hybridization, admixture occurred both before and subsequent to divergence of non-African modern humans, and Neandertals were a source of adaptive variation for loci involved in skin phenotypes. Our results provide a new avenue for paleogenomics studies, allowing substantial amounts of population-level DNA sequence information to be obtained from extinct groups even in the absence of fossilized remains.

Fascinating.

I’d love to see a reporter bring this up at one of those Texas GOP debates…

Pro-presidential majority approves amnesty law

kyivpost.com

“Ukraine’s parliament passed an amnesty law at a late night session on Jan. 29. The law, authored by the president’s representative in parliament Yuriy Myroshnychenko, was denounced by the opposition as unacceptable because it imposes a deadline on the protesters for leaving the government buildings taken over in the past week across Ukraine.

(snip)

“The bill was supported by 232 lawmakers of the pro-presidential majority out of the 416 registered in the session hall on Wednesday evening after the president threatened to disband the parliament at a special emergency meeting with his Party of Regions faction.

(snip)

“The law, which will come into effect after the president’s signature and after it gets printed in the official media, gives the protesters 15 days to clear all government buildings across the country. The Trade Union House, which serves as the headquarters of the protest, as well as Ukraine House and October Palace in Kyiv are not a part of the list, though.”

I wonder if it has something to do with almost every single cold medicine containing it, and then people over medicating with something like extra strength Tylenol in addition to the cold meds. There have been warnings for years about liver damage related to it, maybe erring on the side of caution?

That’s my take on it as well. I’d like to be proven wrong.

One has to be remarkably naive to believe there is any point at all in debating a creationist, especially on the creationist’s home field.

It will be a glorious display of the Gish Gallop in action followed by a declaration of victory for creationists - by the creationists of course. And nothing new will be learned or accomplished for reality… or Nye who will be able to do little more than stutter.

There would have to be licensing procedures —classes to take about law and health etc—for sex workers.

Kinda like a CDL. Easy enough to obtain, just basic guidelines to follow.

“Really for a single mother of young children it would work well.”

That’s an appalling statement and one which singles out a demographic simply because they are more likely to be poor. I would rather see the fathers of those children have to pay for at least half of their support, something that wasn’t available to me, and isn’t to so many “single” mothers. Men should be made to live up to their responsibilities; women shouldn’t have to resort to selling their bodies in order to survive.

I was a “single” mother of 2. It would never have occurred to me to become a prostitute to support my kids—it would have been way beyond my set of values, not to mention putting myself in harm’s way. I did a few jobs that didn’t pay much money when I was younger, but I always was able to start from scratch more than once. I never accepted gifts from men, either. There was no quid pro quo when I dated someone. That was understood. I’d rather pay for my own meal or whatever and never see the guy again. It wasn’t that I was a prude—it was that I considered myself independent and sex was not to be some kind of “trade off” or “deal”.

To be perfectly fair, I can just about guarantee that prices WILL go up if the minimum wage is raised. Because corporate fatcats will seize on it as an excuse to jack up the prices, thus ensuring that their grossly overinflated wages will remain intact. God forbid that a CEO earn less than a bajillion dollars a year.

re: #316 calochortus

I would think that with legalization there would also be regulation, health checks, etc. Porn actors in CA keep testing HIV positive, if there were no regulations STDs of all kinds would end up being an issue. But then the question becomes one of money and hiring doctors and health inspectors and maintaining oversight to prevent abuse. Unionizing the workers might help if the right rules and structure could be set up.

Seems reasonable. I believe a woman’s body is hers to do with as she wishes. Being a prostitute doesn’t appeal to me, but it might be an acceptable choice for some women.
What I don’t approve of is sex slavery and pimps.

Edited to add: While prostitution doesn’t appeal to me, I think there are probably things that appeal to me even less (assuming that the working conditions were safe, etc.) Not that it’s going to be a likely option at my age anyway…

Well, it’s reality. A person with few marketable skills or temporarily in a bad situation can always sell what they have (if it is marketable). Really for a single mother of young children it would work well. Work-by-the-hour kinda thing.

I think we have to move away from the our fairy tale ideals about sex. It just doesn’t seem to be the reality -historically or currently. We have no idea how many women exchange sex for “favors” who may not be technically “sex workers”.

Men, women and children are being exploited and sidelined because of a law we have regarding sex.

It’s killing all of us.

Reality is making the sperm donors pay for the support of their children. Women have gotten such a bad deal from authorities about enforcing support laws that they sometimes can’t afford to pursue it or just give up. Or if you’re in another state, having the resources to pursue the necessary steps to go to court and have it enforced.

That is what makes many, many women and their children poor.

Why, all the sudden it seems, the war on acetaminophen?

Last year, a friend in the hospital, was given a liquid acetaminophen thru her IV drip to take the edge off between narcotic doses. I’d think if it were really all that bad, the liquid version would not be available.

I don’t buy the hype.

Acetaminophen kills a fair number of people every year via liver damage. One of the worst aspects is in concoctions like Vicodin which is it plus codeine - people OD on the acetaminophen because they are not aware of how much they’ve taken. Or take 4 instead of 2 for an injury for a day or two. They then find themselves on the liver transplant waiting list.

In the case of the IV drip that dose can be very carefully calculated and controlled. There are some fairly sophisticated computerize pumps in modern IV systems keeping careful track of how much of a given drug is used. Unlike OTC drugs dependent upon memory.

It’s a nasty nasty drug and should be prescription only like narcotics. I do not use it at all and we do not keep it in the house and have refused prescriptions from doctors for compounded drugs that contain acetaminophen.

Ibuprofen can cause stomach distress and kidney problems but it doesn’t have the history of killing people. I’ll stick to it.

You know, coming from a family that DID better themselves (i.e., immigrants who worked their way up from nothing to something), that is INDEED a crock of shit. You still work hard, but you need to make enough to be able to better yourself and pay for college for yourself or your kids. If you don’t make enough money to do that, you can’t.

For the TPGOP noveau robber baron crowd, that’s a feature, not a bug.

re: #201 FemNaziBitch

One doesn’t have to be a medical or psych professional to know that the idea that women can’t control their libido is classic Projection.

Especially when, I’d wager to say, most of the troglodytes that say or think this shit “think” more with their little heads than the big one on top of their shoulders.
