Texas board approves textbook review rule changes

Among the changes approved Friday was a mandate that teachers or professors be given priority for serving on the textbook review panels for subjects in their areas of expertise. They also enable the board to appoint outside experts to check objections raised by review panels and ensure they are based on fact, not ideology.

Btw, I have been in touch with Virgin Galactic about their suborbital space flight. I might actually do it. My age (65 in June) is an issue but not an insurmountable one if I can pass a comprehensive physical. Older people have flown in orbit, a far more demanding regime than a brief suborbital flight, and Dr. Storey Musgrave did arduous spacewalks at 61.

The cost is daunting, but it is a once in several lifetimes opportunity.

There’s got to be more - and better - out there.

The Freepers/Breitbarts/Tea Party faction hate him. Between his worn out family name, his atrocious history of bigotry and general bland awfulness … I didn’t even have to finish this sentence.

In any event, right now he can’t even outpoll Hillary in his home state of Florida, and any Republican that can’t carry their home state is almost certainly a done deal.

In hypothetical 2016 general election match-ups, Bush would be the strongest Republican challenger to Clinton in Florida, losing to her by a 49-to-43 percent margin. Clinton leads Rubio by 10 points, Paul by 13 points, Ryan by 13 points, Christie by 16 points and Cruz by 20.

How sad is that. The guy is actually pretty popular in FL and he’s that much behind, Hillary is just that much of a phenomenon. Add to that, there’s no way Bush comes out of the GOP primaries without taking several direct torpedo hits.

There are currently the following top level politicians in the Democratic party:
21 Governors
55 US Senators
200 US Congressmen

plus a plethora of retired governors, several major city mayors, etc.

Why isn’t the DNC pushing some of them?

Maybe they don’t see any value in pushing them before the Primaries and giving the Republicans time to sharpen their opposition research. The DNC knows that all viable ammunition against Hillary has already been fired ages ago and that the the GOP isn’t moving the needle with their continued focus on her. Also gives the Republicans more time to focus on tearing each other down.

She lost to Obama, narrowly, because 2008 became a referendum on the Iraq War AUMF vote, and her popularity has gained an immense boost via her tenure as Sec State. She is in no way similar to Romney.

Not only does Jeb carry that albatross of a last name around, he would negate the rationale of the GOP’s likely 2016 message. He’s just as much a political insider, part of a dynasty, and nearly as old as Hillary. Furthermore, he’s been out of politics for quite a while.

The “appeal” of Christie (before this month, anyway) as well as Paul, Cruz, Rubio, Ryan, et al. is that they’re young, fresh, and haven’t been completely corrupted by DC. One of these guys could theoretically be a gop version of the “hope and change” figure that Obama became. (Though the gop version would be more like “despair and regression”, but that’s beside the point.)

To beat her, the Republicans will probably have to field an “anti-Hillary” candidate. That’s not Jeb. He doesn’t provide enough contrast. The others on the current short list provide plenty of contrast, but most are clowns and/or lightweights. If the GOP manages to win in 2016, it might be with a nominee who’s not currently on the radar.

People forget how close she came to winning the 2008 nod, and why she lost. First, she voted for the Iraq War, one of the central issues of the whole campaign. That pissed off a lot of Dems, and Obama opposed Iraq from the start. Second, her campaign strategists severely miscalculated. Their bungling of caucus states cost her the nomination, and the WH.

Sure, there are plenty of dead enders left over from the 90’s who still hate the Clintons. But they lean right, and wouldn’t vote Dem anyway. And every year, for the last decade, she polls as the most respected woman in America.

Finally, Romney isn’t married to the most popular living ex-president. Hillary is. Bill would be a huge asset, since the country has moved past its squeamishness over his affair. He’s quite popular with moderates and independents, and the Party still loves him. His speech at the 2012 convention was epic. No one else in either party could pull off something like that at this point in history.

My age (65 in June) is an issue but not an insurmountable one if I can pass a comprehensive physical. It’s weird. It’s like her possible candidacy has sucked all the oxygen out of the room. Other Dems seem afraid to jump in because her stature is so great within the Party. I don’t think many want to take her on. Which might be a good thing for all, since it would prevent her from having to take a lot of shots from other Dems. And it could give the Dems a big head start as they would have a “unity candidate” and could roll forward while a bunch of Republicans are still slugging it out with each other.

Part of the problem is the second term president problem. It’s a major reason we have had this habit of flipping which party was in the white house every couple of terms.

That second term the president runs for is essentially unchallenged by any of his party members. That in turn is catastrophic for the turnover term as that makes any serious contenders eight years out of memory.

The only people who nudged the national memory hard enough to stand out in 2012 were Hillary and some people who spoke at the convention. And most of the people in the convention haven’t been heard of since. So what you’ve got right now is Hillary, some senators, maybe a couple of congresscritters, and a handful of governors.

For what it’s worth the handful of names I think could have enough name recognition to start the run against Hillary - maybe win, maybe lose - include Warren (who right now says she’s not running), Pelosi (who at over 70 has age issues), Kerry (yes, again), and Franken (did you say “who” or “no way”?),. That’s not to say there aren’t a bunch of canny and capable other contenders, but their number one goal is to make their names national without ruining their reputation.

They’ve got a year, give or take. This time next year the potential names will be out, and if they’re not getting more than “who?, oh yeah him/her” by June of next year they’re done.

In addition to being the victim in a kidnapping case, an eight-day ordeal that left him beaten and mutilated with nail puncture wounds in his hands, Bulatov is suspected of taking part in a riot which carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence. The accusation is presumably in connection to the roving protest-on-wheels that Bulatov has marshaled during which the residences of top Ukrainian officials, including President Viktor Yanukovych’s palatial mansion, were visited with calls for their ouster.

Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko said that after Bulatov was discovered alive on Jan. 30, the investigator in the riot case asked a judge to place him under house arrest, instead of behind bars. During a news conference, Oleksandr Hnativ, deputy head of the investigation department of the Interior Ministry, said that based on information gleaned from servers it seized on Dec. 9 from an information technology firm next door to the opposition Batkivshchyna Party headquarters in Podil, that the Nov. 21 demonstration — which marks the first day when people took to the streets in central Kyiv when Ukraine rejected an Association Agreement with the European Union — was “not spontaneous and was planned in advance.”

He added that that one of the scenarios that Batkivshchyna had envisioned was a “forceful” development of events during which “force would be used against protesters which would then cause widespread (public) anger and undermine the credibility of the current government and President (Viktor Yanukovych).”

Hnativ concluded that the data has been sent for further forensic study to determine if a coup d’etat was attempted.

Feb. 1, 3:15 p.m. Police on Jan. 31 said that they have preliminary evidence based on dozens of terrabytes of data that the EuroMaidan movement was planned from the outset.

During a news conference, Oleksandr Hnativ, deputy head of the investigation department of the Interior Ministry, said that based on information gleaned from servers it seized on Dec. 9 from an information technology firm next door to the opposition Batkivshchyna Party headquarters in Podil, that the Nov. 21 demonstration — which marks the first day when people took to the streets in central Kyiv when Ukraine rejected an Association Agreement with the European Union — was “not spontaneous and was planned in advance.”

He added that that one of the scenarios that Batkivshchyna had envisioned was a “forceful” development of events during which “force would be used against protesters which would then cause widespread (public) anger and undermine the credibility of the current government and President (Viktor Yanukovych).”

Hnativ concluded that the data has been sent for further forensic study to determine if a coup d’etat was attempted.

That’s not stupid, not really. The Euromaidan people know its BS, but they aren’t the audience for this. The audience is Yanukovych’s supporters and those who really haven’t firmly taken a side yet. It is intended to inflame his own supporters and prepare them for the task of crushing Euromaidan while discouraging those who have not yet fully sided with Euromaidan from doing so.

I don’t agree. The “coup” part is part of the idea being planted of “sinister foreign influence”.

The supposed “sinister foreign leader” already alluded to has been George Soros. Soros has provided money and organizational aid to small-d democrats in the Ukraine in the past, so it will seem plausible to some there, and the fact that he is Jewish allows Yanukovych to point an accusing finger at “TEH JUICE!!!11”, which still has some modest currency in the Ukraine I’m sad to say.

Moreover, shouting “SOROS!!1” might be a ploy by Yanukovych to try to gain sympathy from Fox News viewers. He might be hoping he can create support for himself in the US by depicting himself as guarding tradition from the “Euroleft”. I don’t think that will work but as a secondary goal its worth trying from his point of view.

I’ve seen that meme about Soros financing “the revolution” and it’s simply not true, so not true that it’s disappeared, except in certain quarters.

This is an organic movement, consisting of parliamentarians and other groups, that has been in the making for a long time. People are fed up with the criminal bureaucratic oligarchs that rule Ukraine and the effect they have on the ordinary people’s livelihood and well being. We’ve already seen how oppressive and suppressive the Yanukovych govt has been on protestors.

BTW, I don’t think Yanukovych is concerned with Fox News viewers. He’s more concerned with keeping Moscow’s support and money.

To be clear, I have believed from the first that Euromaidan is an authentic and grassroots movement. I was not trying to portray it as anything else.

moreover, even if George Soros had given it some money it would not bother me because its cause is righteous and I will not condemn a man for legitimate support of a righteous cause.

I’ve been a small town newspaper obituary writer for more than 25 years.
They’re interesting to write because you get to include all sorts of things about the person that make it a celebration of the person’s life instead of the basic information only that is the big city paper version. It’s more like an obituary that a big city paper does for famous people.
My first publisher (RIP and, yes, I wrote his obituary) told me that the obituary is the “last, best thing” we can do for someone, so make it great.

Ukraine’s largest river is not the Dnieper, but seemingly inexhaustible stream of money flowing in the direction of Austria, Liechtenstein, England and the the Caribbean, writes the paper, and Vienna is the hub of transfers.

The story lists significant assets of Andriy and Serhiy Klyuev, two high-ranking Party of Regions members who are tied into the ownership scheme behind Mezhyhirya, the president’s vast real estate north of Kyiv. Andriy Klyuev heads the president’s administration and leads his team of negotiations with the opposition to solve the political crisis.

It also lists the assents (sic) of President Viktor Yanukovych’s son Oleksandr and Oleksiy Azarov, also a Party of Regions deputy and son of former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov who flew off to Austria just hours after his resignation last week. (my emphasis)

One of the characters who seems to be involved in managing these fortunes is Reinhard Proksch, a 51-year old manager tied up to companies in in London and Liechtenstein that own assets in Ukraine.He maintained that his business is fully legal and transparent, though. “My business is just that, to maintain or manage real estate and investment for foreign customers. Here I usually have a function as a controller, which means I watch that no irregularities happen,” he said. He also said he was not a money manager, and his role is down to “technical tax and administrative activities.”

It really does look rather post-apocalyptic in some of those areas (esp in the central area) and where you find burned out vehicles, recently suspected as done by tituski and the Berkut for revenge, most owned by Euromaidans but one from the Canadian Embassy and one belonging to a Channel 5 journalist.

Okay, this is off-topic, but I need to vent and you guys might need assurance that the retrobulbarly evacuating derpes* pandemic is not limited to conservatives in the United States.

Just got the news that the conservative-led administration in my municipality (Stockholm, Sweden) in its infinite wisdom has decided to close down the last place where people with mental problems could have something to do rather than fester at home with their problems.

I’ve seen them close down two other units like this one during their 8-year reign. And they haven’t changed the slogan under which they have closed things down. Wait for it …

*drumroll*

“Freedom of Choice!”

Right now, people with mental problems in my borough who are too ill to work are left with two choices:

a) Fester at home with their problems.
b) Work for a unit which basically is a janitorial service, only the pay is one micro-wave meal the days you work.

And the conservative party that leads (Moderaterna) still claims that the following bumper sticker is a socialist fraud perpetrated to make them look bad.

Somehow, with the emphasis on work the conservative-led admin has used in its rhethoric during the past 8 years, I am not convinced the bumper sticker is a fake, nor a mistake to begin with.

Whew. So Glad It’s Saturday. Friday evening really went sideways on us. First, I was on a subway train that hit a man on the tracks. Train stops half into the station, it’s power goes out, lights all go out and the doors won’t open. Crowded train, a few people get twitchy and claustrophobic. One young lady goes down clutching her chest, spasming some and says in spanish “heart murmur” over and over. Poor thing is terrified. The doors still won’t open so I open the door between train cars to let air in. Meanwhile metro guys are ignoring our shouts for help. (I had no idea they were working a badly hurt man upfront) I reach out from between the cars and grab one metro guys sleeve and force him to look at me and hear me say or maybe shout “lady down with a seizure” His eyes get big I let go and we evacuate our car finally.

I walk up onto Hollywood bl. and find a place for a drink and a snack, waiting for the wife to come down and pick me up and another “red line refugee” who we gave a lift to.

I get home and a dear friend is in tears, she has just found solid evidence her husband is a serial cheater, and just got a DUI. Ya know I get consenting adults and all that but the damage done by that kind of betrayal is soul wrecking.

Maybe it’s a good day to take the truck and camera gear out for an afternoon.

Nothing to do with “consenting adults and all that” - it’s that a marriage is supposed to be a social contract. The wife had expectations of monogamy and the husband didn’t meet them. That’s the real problem with infidelity - it’s a breach of the marital contract.

I get home and a dear friend is in tears, she has just found solid evidence her husband is a serial cheater, and just got a DUI. Ya know I get consenting adults and all that but the damage done by that kind of betrayal is soul wrecking.

That kind of dishonesty in relationships is a killer, AFAIC. At least allow me to choose before you destroy it yourself. It should be my choice, not yours, if I want to go along with it or not.

I may not personally agree with the idea of an open marriage, but it fits with what I said earlier: When both partners agree to the terms of the relationship.

Thanks WW. From scant news reports everyone got out okay, and the man that got hit went to the hospital in stable condition.

No kids, and yes I’m sure my young friend will make good use of her personal strengths. Her numerous friends got her covered as and when she needs any support.

Oh and Kudos to the staff at the Delphine Eatery for accommodating a sudden crowd quite unlike their usual very wealthy tourist or celeb customers. High end bar right next to the subway station at Hollywood & Vine. People helping people.

Goodness, what a day. Yeah, I’d think a nice distraction or three is in order. Hope the coming week is better for you. As for your friend with the serial asshole husband, at least she’s got friends like you to help her through it. When I went through that with the first husband I was alone in a state away from family and friends and it was horrible. ((((hugs to all of you))))

That was my story, also. I was 19, having my second baby and alone in CA with no family there. There is a real reason I never got married again. I saw little point to it after that.

In my case, the marriage lasted 18 months and he talked me into moving to FL for a job. HA. His college sweetheart was doing grad work at UF and that’s the real reason he wanted to be there. Jerk. He also cheated with anyone who looked at him sideways. I finally had enough and left his ass. It was awful, I had to stay there for awhile because I couldn’t afford to go anywhere else. I had just been through a horrible custody battle for my first child (I never married her dad, smartest move I ever made) and the asshole knew I was hurting still from that. It turns out he only married me because he thought that somehow he’d have to pay less taxes as a married guy and when that didn’t happen, he no longer had any use for me. Last I heard his dad was in prison for tax evasion and some sort of fraud and they had investigated him for being a part of that. Good riddance. Ahh the mistakes of our misspent youth, lol.
