Agreed! I don’t know why he isn’t a gigantic star - he’s not just an unequalled acoustic guitarist, he has such a great attitude about everything too.

His pickin’ leaves me grinin’!

Nice to see him add some Tele ‘lectric to this one too.

And I think I mentioned it before, or Charles has covered it too…he said in an interview once he really is a drummer, which he was joking about. He did play drums in a band with his brother Phil in the early 70s. You can tell when he uses the body of the guitar as a drum he knows his beats. And as I drummer, now learning and playing more guitar, he is an inspiration to me.

Tommy’s website has been sanitized of any mention of his tenure in the New Zealand band Dragon. Here is a clip of him pretending to play with them in 1986. Jump ahead to 1:40 unless you want to see how awful Saturday television in Australia was:

Youtube Video

Todd Rundgren produced the accompanying album of the same name, and it was released internationally under the band name Hunter that year. That is the last name of the singer and bassist, and record execs figured “Dragon” would sound too much like a hair metal band to Americans and Europeans. The album bombed in any case.

Fozzie knocked my Samsung Galaxy SIII off the counter last night. Screen won’t come on. Six months left on contract with Verizon, but customer support says I qualify for an “Early Upgrade!”

Drive to Verizon store. Young guy says, “Get the S4! $150 rebate!”
“How much out the door?” I ask.
“$367 he smiles! (plus $27 a month for 20 months to pay for the phone)”
“What about the mini S4? It looks like a better deal and a better pocket size?”
“Well, I don’t have that in stock, but can order it. If money’s an issue, I have some certified used phones you can buy!”
“Money’s not an issue. I assume I also have to buy another two year contract.”
“Yes! But hey, why not treat yourself!”

That pretty much lost me. So I pulled the old 3G HTC droid out of my pocket and asked, “Do you still carry SIM cards for these?”
“Yes we do! They’re only $15!”
Turns out, the SIM card I had was fine, he reactivated the 3G phone, and I got out of there for $0. I can go six months on the HTC.

Oh, and if this phone doesn’t hold a charge, I can break contract, switch carriers, and still get out the door for less than $367 plus $27 a month.

Interesting - didn’t know that. I can see why Todd produced them — the tune sounds kind of like a lost Utopia song.

Pretty sure that’s Todd playing the solo in that video.

Fans of Utopia will absolutely enjoy that album…and you’re right, the solo DOES sound like Todd. However, Tommy was definitely part of those album sessions. I know this because of Todd’s quote afterwards: “Tommy Emmanuel is TWO of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard!”

The Mrs. Fish and I are limping along on my mom and dad’s old iPhone 3GS’s that they dumped for iPhone 4’s a while back. I can’t afford to upgrade them right now since I’d effectively have to pay market price for a new phone, but our phones are still perfectly serviceable and I have no complaints about the terms of my plan.

MJ Rosenberg declares Obama victory over the war mongering Jews!

The Week Obama Took Down the Lobby

It didn’t take much. Just the power of the presidency, the State of the Union, and the whole country watching.

Plus the president’s will.

And AIPAC’s entire campaign to destroy America’s chance to reach an agreement with Iran crumbled. Within hours, three senators announced they were no longer cosponsoring AIPAC’s bill to kill the Iran negotiations (Gillibrand, Coons and Manchin), and AIPAC’s hopes to override Obama’s veto ended with a whimper, AIPAC’s whimper.

American Jews will not tolerate the suggestion that they are anything but good Americans. Fighting a president over a national security issue is simply not sustainable. Especially when it is only the fat cats of the lobby and not the Jewish community at large that is opposing the president. That is the case now.

It appears that the president is starting to understand that. Tragically, Obama is not likely to defeat the monied special interests on matters like guns or income inequality, but he can defeat them on foreign policy. That is because when it comes to matters like risking U.S. security and American lives, it is impossible for even the most powerful lobby to defeat him.

In essence, Obama asked, “which side are you on?” So long as that is the question, he wins. And so do we all.

I am sooo glad he is not a gigantic star. The reason - he probably won’t sell out. Do you really want to see him with the likes of cyrus, beiber & gaga? Really? He does ok financially without playing stadiums and retains an incredible amount of integrity in his touring and performances. Love the guy!!

I’ve been holding off on getting an iPhone due to price. I keep looking at Virgin Mobile’s plan, but they use Sprint and it’s only 3G around here. Is 3G speed doable? What’s your download speed like?

That’s definitely TR playing that solo. His vibrato is unmistakeable, and there’s one pattern of notes that he plays that’s right out of the solo in ‘Parole’ off The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren.

Speaking of guitars - I just finished putting the finishing touches on the latest beast - a parts Jazzmaster. I did all the assembly, wiring and finish. Today had enough sun that I could take it outside and take some half-decent pics of it. Annnnnd here it is now…

I mostly only use my phone for downloads in areas where I can connect to Wifi, but 3G speed is usually doable. I don’t have any hard numbers, but it’s not uncomfortable for me.

I’m just outside of Philly in South Jersey. For whatever reason, with the exception of Verizon, none of the other major carries have LTE around here. I’m like 10 miles outside of the 2nd biggest city on the East Coast. In Sprint’s case, its coverage literally stops at the Delaware River.

I may go with Virgin Mobile. You pay full freight for the phone, but they have a $35 monthly plan that include unlimited texting and 2.5 GB data unthrottled. Definitely cheaper over the life of the plan.

My problem is the GF has a Verizon iPhone, so I’ve seen the promised land regarding LTE. It’s insane; like 25-40 mb download insane. Literally faster than our wired FiOS connection, which tops out 25 mb. Plus their coverage for LTE can’t be beat.

I’m guessing that 3G tops out in the 3-5 mb download range. Yes, I am wallowing in First World Problem territory.

Note that Poroshenko is a pro-Western billionaire who has also been active in Ukraine politics. He is getting this done, and Germany has already offered treatment for Bulatov. He’s the guy Kerry appears to be saying something to in the photo.

Feb. 1, 10:50 p.m. — Petro Poroshenko said that AutoMaidan activist Dmytro Bulatov will be taken out of Ukraine for treatment because he remains in danger of arrest and harassment at home.

“Tomorrow we will evacuate Dmitry from the country to one of the EU countries to to give him qualified medical treatment,” Poroshenko said.

Bulatov, who was missing for eight days after he was kidnapped on Jan. 21, was tortured and beaten in detention. He was crucified by his captors, and a part of his ear was cut off. He is currently in Borys clinic in Kyiv, and is wanted by the police, who accuse him of organizing mass riots. The Interior Ministry also complained in a statement today that investigators were blocked from seeing Bulatov in hospital, and cannot move fast in the search for his captors. —Katya Gorchinskaya

The latest weak attempt to discredit Snowden and Greenwald

A hard-to-follow essay took aim at the whistle-blower and journalist for having voiced some libertarian views

A certain strand of left-wing anti-libertarianism has aroused the ire of my colleague Peter Frase. But his critique is hard to follow — its object has been a moving target.

In a post last week, Frase used Sean Wilentz’s recent New Republic hit piece on Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, and Glenn Greenwald as a jumping-off point to condemn “some on the Left” who believe “defending the possibility of government requires rejecting any alliance with libertarians who might criticize particularly noxious aspects of the existing state.”

It’s hard to follow if you are actually paying attention and trying to keep track of all the twists, turns, allusions, and inferences, in betwixt the actual sparse and not quite bombshell facts.

Or, it’s hard to follow if you’re a simplistic DudeBro.

FDLE chemist under investigation for evidence tampering at lab

TALLAHASSEE —

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a major case of evidence tampering across the state by an agency chemist.

(snip)

“The investigation began Thursday, Jan. 30 when Escambia County Sheriff’s investigators notice prescription pain pills missing from the evidence locker room.

“Law enforcement found the prescriptions were replaced with over-the-counter medications.

“In each of the tampered cases, investigators said they were all cases were processed by the same chemist.

“Right now, investigators said it’s possible the chemist is either a user or is tied to drug trafficking. However, the motive is still not clear.”

So, they have evidence and suspend this person with pay? WTF?

Well, I’m back in from shopping and what-not.

A. Tommy Emmanuel is freaking incredible. I so plan on going to see him when he comes to Nashville in 2 weeks. Maybe I can sweet talk a friend into going with me, I know she would love it too.

B. I just bought a new bedroom suite, I looked for a couple of days, but fell in love with this one early in the process, so it was pretty much going through the motions for the rest of the shopping. It will be in the house on Thursday. :) Got the bed, Dresser, Mirror, 2 nightstands (why do they always want to just put ONE in the set?. Didn’t get the chest of drawers / media center, don’t need it. (but could always get it later if needed)

re: #59 Backwoods_Sleuth

Or, equally likely, was just supplementing his meager government paycheck…

Yeah, but even that isn’t the point. There are around 2600 cases that will have to be reviewed now that have become problematic. For instance, we don’t know if the people were convicted or not, or even if the chemist ran tests on the drugs and provided evidence that they were before stealing them, or judge fudged the results.

We don’t even know if they were all about oxycontin or the whatever drug it was; it was probably a variety of them. So—it could be either of those scenarios (user, dealer) or it could be the person tampered w/evidence because for some reason they have problems w/people being convicted for drugs. Like the cops said, they don’t know the person’s motive.

I’m still surprised, though, that since there is always a chain of evidence that they already know the person stole them and have not arrested the person but simply put them on paid leave.

All those cases could eventually be tossed.

There might be some administrative or state rules that they have to follow here that would require a suspension first until they have what they need to file charges and arrest them. They also have to fully assess the damage that’s been done, in terms of the total impact for all the reasons you mentioned.

“In particular, as reported by Verkhovna Rada deputy of “Batkivshchyna” Vladimir Yavorivskiy.

(This is a really bad translation, BTW)

“Let me remind you one thing, Chornovil , who gave an interview recently , he worked with Yanukovych than one year, again with full confidence said that he sluggish schizophrenia and delusions of persecution , he had incapacitated . Pressured on him , including the Party of Regions , which began to crumble , the oligarchs are rebelling . previously, he was afraid to come to the parliament , then last week already made two trips to meet with the faction and the opposition. Yanukovich himself confirmed in a meeting with the Party of Regions in the parliament that he had a hemorrhage , it is very bad looked . Yeah but he doesn’t have a marketable “look”.

Why, deny it, of course:

I can’t help but feel this Super Bowl is hurt by the non-geographical divides of the AFC/NFC.

I mean, you can’t really blame people in the NYC area for not being super worked up for a game between two Western teams. If the league had an East/West split, there’d be a much higher possibility that one of the participants in this game would be from a more favorable location. I mean there are tons of teams that could generate more interest in NYC than these two (Packers, Bears, Eagles, Bills, Patriots, Ravens and Redskins to name a few).

It’s good for New York to have to acknowledge other parts of America once and awhile, if they can’t get fired up about a Super Bowl happening in their town then screw them.

I don’t know how anyone else feels about this, but I’m kind of tired of celebrities being given total, complete immunity to the following kinds of charges. I know that I have often been naive about saying, “Oh, he (or she) couldn’t have done that, he has too much to lose”, but we also have to remember that with children, too many predators “get away with it” because too many times we simply don’t believe children and it seems it would be far easier for someone with lawyers, publicists, people who surround and protect celebrities to “get away with it” even more. Far too often we confuse the character we see these people portray in public as the same person they are in their private life.

There’s no doubt that creative people, esp, are more forgiven, if not simply for their talent. If Woody Allen were a politician, he probably would have already been hung out to dry. But back when he took Mia Farrow’s daughter as his lover even though she was 19 (he was 66), a girl who BTW had learning difficulties and whose age no one really knows, a girl for whom he was a de facto, if not de jure, father to, well, that was when I stopped paying attention to his movies, as much as I had enjoyed some of them. I always thought of his “neurotic” playing out as a sort of self-therapy, but was it more than simple neurosis? Was this a man so self-absorbed that he didn’t deny himself anything? When he cast the 16 yr old Mariel Hemingway as his HS aged lover in Manhattan, when he was 44, did anyone really notice? Or that she was styled after Stacy Nelkin, a 17 yr old he had an affair with at the time? Or did the “genius filmmaker” simply get away with it?

Even after all that, Soon-Yi Previn and Woody Allen were allowed to adopt 2 daughters around 2000. He remains 37 yrs her senior.

At any rate, Dylan Farrow (living under another name) has come out with her story, at age 28.

Mississippi Senate OKs adding ‘In God We Trust’ to seal

The Mississippi Senate voted Friday to add “In God We Trust” to the state seal, as requested by Republican Gov. Phil Bryant.

[…]

Senate Bill 2681 passed the Senate 48-0, with four senators absent. It moves to the House for more work.

The bill is called the “Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” and it says government may not burden a person’s right to practice religion.

Its chief sponsor is Republican Sen. Phillip Gandy, who is minister of Liberty Baptist Church in Waynesboro. Gandy said he has heard no examples of Mississippi government trying to limit religion, but he has talked to some conservative Christians — particularly Pentecostals and Baptists — who are concerned.

“Times are changing, and Christians are afraid of a lot of different things. And some of that is reality, possibly, and some is perception. But we want to do what we can,” Gandy said after the bill passed.

[…]

Sen. Hob Bryan, D-Amory, asked during the debate if the bill would protect Muslims stopping work to face Mecca and pray, or to some religious groups requiring members to wear certain types of head coverings.

[…]

Bryan, who’s Baptist, said after the bill passed: “This bill applies to all religions, including Islam, Buddhism and New Age religions. We need to think carefully about the implications of it.

Funny, the Baptists are a big reason we have a separation of church and state. They went to Thomas Jefferson with their concerns of established religions by a government. Now this.

If you’re referring to the Danbury Baptists, their letter to Jefferson (in response to which he wrote of the “wall of separation between Church and State”) was written in 1801, when he had just become President. Jefferson was an advocate for separation long before this, having written the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom 15 years earlier. If the Baptists had a strong influence on Jefferson or Madison before this, I’m not aware of it.

Check with Gary’s Classic Guitars out of the Cincinnati Ohio area. He made me a happy camper when I was looking to sell a Fender Twister/Musiclander. He is extremely fair, know his guitars and a really nice guy.

Link

I was lucky in that I was able to drive down from Columbus to his location. I didn’t have to pay for and trust shipping my baby, so that was great.

And I am glad I did go…he let me hold both a real Fender “No Caster” worth many many thousands and a ‘53 Les Paul Gold Top that was just beautiful. All original and used so it had that real classic thing going on.

He had so many damn nice guitars it was impressive and I asked him who he sold to because not just any person off the street can afford $75,000 and $30,000 guitars. He said turn around ( I was in his office) and look at the photos on that table and above on the wall. I’m not going to drop his names, but damn…it was impressive…Hollywood…TV…and Famous Musicians.

Anyway, if you contact him, tell him you heard about him from some guy in Columbus Ohio that sold him a Fender Swinger back in November.

For a bit more irony, the “Americans United for Separation of Church and State” began life as “Protestants and Other Americans United for Separation of Church and State”. Their concern was preventing tax dollars from flowing into Catholic parochial schools in the ’50s.
