Several Cyber Security Initiatives Lost After Snowden’s NSA Leaks

US News • Views: 30,969

Alexander wanted to use the NSA’s powerful tools to scan Internet traffic for malicious software code. He said the NSA could kill the viruses and other digital threats without reading consumers’ private emails, texts and Web searches.

The NSA normally protects military and other national security computer networks. Alexander also wanted authority to prevent hackers from penetrating U.S. banks, defense industries, telecommunications systems and other institutions to crash their networks or to steal intellectual property worth billions of dollars.

But after Snowden, a contractor, began leaking NSA systems for spying in cyberspace that went public in June, Alexander’s proposal was a political nonstarter, felled by distrust of his agency’s fearsome surveillance powers in the seesawing national debate over privacy and national security.

It was one of several Obama administration initiatives, in Congress and in diplomacy, that experts say have been stopped cold or set back by the Snowden affair. As a result, U.S. officials have struggled to respond to the daily onslaught of attacks from Russia, China and elsewhere, a vulnerability that U.S. intelligence agencies now rank as a greater threat to national security than terrorism.

Fucking Nerdville libertarians have gone crazy. If everything is free, open and available to all, where is my fucking privacy and security? This means not just govt, but businesses are open to the same kind of hackery, as we saw when thieves came after people’s credit card information and as we’ve seen in other kinds of activities.

5 Political Atheist  Sun, Feb 2, 2014 10:16:09am

Hey thanks Charles! I think it’s important to recognize the negative consequences of Snowdens leaks. Looking at the records of attempted intrusions our network devices record I want to say I fully support an effort by NSA to strip matware right out of the stream on the fly.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Death Hoax Dismissed Since Actor Is ‘Alive And Well’

On Saturday (February 01) the actor’s reps officially confirmed that Philip Seymour Hoffman is not dead. “He joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax. He’s still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet,” they said.

Some fans have expressed anger at the fake report saying it was reckless, distressing and hurtful to fans of the much loved actor. Others say this shows his extreme popularity across the globe.

The website “mediamass.net”

The website mediamass.net is the medium of our satire to expose with humour, exaggeration and ridicule the contemporary mass production and mass consumption that we observe

Also it will not only mock the procuders (mainstream media, journalists) as it is common when questioning and criticizing mass media, but also the consumers as one cannot exist without the other. Sensationalism, lack of verification of information, ethics and standards issues are only symptoms of the actual social and economic order. This is particularly obvious when observing the role of social networking sites in spreading rumours.

Many companies and institutions, which rely on a free flow of information, do too little to protect their networks. They also are often constrained from tipping off the government or other companies about computer attacks, or malicious software, because of potential shareholder suits or other legal liability.

latimes.com

Okay that sort of thing we can fix with good practices (like what CJ added with SSL) & a little legislation. We must. I’m not code trained. So I have this question for the Lizarding that are. How bad would it be if strong encryption became the norm in web traffic? Even for all the day to day routing stuff like texts home about late for dinner. Build it right into our devices. Microsoft and Google might do that to keep confidence in cloud services high.

Impractical? Doable? Not there yet?

Some of us think that the current model of dealing with drugs isn’t working, hasn’t worked and can’t be improved by tweaking. Legalizing them doesn’t imply approving them, any more than “approving” legal cigarettes or alchohol (i.e. not wanting to outlaw them) means I want people to misuse them (in the case of cigarettes, of course, any use is misuse).

“Some of us…” I’m not crazy about the drug laws, either, but I would never encourage people to use them as a lifestyle.

I have a 51 yr old son who is slowly dying from the effects of drugs, mostly opiates—Hep A, had surgery to insert stents a couple of yrs ago, liver disease—he may die before I do. Drugs ruled his life, off and on since he was a teen, even after he saw his friends die from OD’ing, young and older.

I despise drugs. And I’m not too fond of alcohol, because the 2 usually go together, along with, BTW, cigarette smoking. Some people do all of them. And yes, I thought PSH was brilliant in the movies in which I saw him, but knew nothing of his personal life.

CNN: Philip Seymour Hoffman dead of apparent drug overdose

(CNN) — Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his Manhattan apartment, law enforcement sources said Sunday.

Hoffman, 46, was found in the bathroom of the fourth-floor apartment, the sources told CNN.

Hoffman won an Academy Award for best actor for the 2005 biopic “Capote.”

He also appeared in “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Doubt,” and “The Master,” for which he was nominated as best supporting actor.

According to a biography of the actor posted on the Turner Classic Movies website, last year Hoffman revealed he was seeking treatment for drug abuse, and “seemed to be confident that he was getting a handle on the situation.”

Will legalizing use of drugs recreationally remove the overdose problem? Just as much as ending prohibition stopped alcoholism.

Notice the reflection, however. Making them illegal hasn’t removed the overdose problem any more than prohibition stopped alcohol abuse.

No, the reasons for making drugs legal fall into other categories. Such as:

Such as: Rehabs aren’t perfect. In fact it’s pretty certain it’ll take more than one time to stop. But going into rehab is admission that you have committed a crime if possession is illegal. Even if (theoretically) the rehab client lists are protected the fact is you’re admitting to someone you commit crimes. This creates a significant psychological barrier to seeking help.

Such as: quality control. Bathtub gin and hillbilly moonshine were full of additives, both intentional and otherwise, that made them severe threats to health. Legal alcohol is regulated not only for taxation but to ensure additives are kept out. And because it’s legal there’s far less market for illegal alcohol made in used radiators and bathtubs using lye for cutting and dilution. Same is likely to happen with drugs.

Such as: prison. Addiction is an illness, but under current law we don’t treat it, we quarantine it; we put the addict in prison. There are a host of secondary problems, mostly economic and social, with that action.

I would classify Kerry’s statement as “unhelpful”. It gives hope to Palestian terrorist that if they keep fighting and stonewall peace efforts then Israel will get he blame. It also gives hope the boycotters that if their strategy is working and if they hold on long enough they can force Israeli security policies.

re: #38 Political Atheist

Okay that sort of thing we can fix with good practices (like what CJ added with SSL) & a little legislation. We must. I’m not code trained. So I have this question for the Lizarding that are. How bad would it be if strong encryption became the norm in web traffic? Even for all the day to day routing stuff like texts home about late for dinner. Build it right into our devices. Microsoft and Google might do that to keep confidence in cloud services high.

Impractical? Doable? Not there yet?

Such a simple question. Such a complex answer. The gist is, as far as transmission go, I don’t see it is any more of an issue. Many sites already work at that way. As long as the crypto key is long enough1, and the cryptographic algorithm is good enough1, it should be enough to deter all but the most determined.

Another part of the problem, is data storage. That’s a bit more difficult to answer.

Hope this helps.

1. What’s good enough is not easy to pin down. There are too many considerations to what is good enough.

That means money, or for the daring among us personal discomfort or outright risks. Time zones crossed. I can only imagine real international travel back then in Jerusalem and Europe

LWC has this shot & print of a Mexican waiter pouring flaming brandy laced coffee into a cup at his table. That’s already pretty cool, shot in the far south of Mexico. But leaving the cafe he got held up in an alleyway at night. Real bad guys, that were mercifully bemused at the loco Americano quickly rolling up the film spool and taking his film out as he hands over the camera and borrowed lens. I looked at Ebay, at actual SOLD auctions, prices were all over the place, from 350 on down to maybe 50. One thing I’ve got going is that I can write really good ad copy and take great pics. The headshock was serviced just before I decided to strip that frame.

In any case, it’s going to get sold… I’ve got an old bike box already, and I’m never going to use it for anything, and if I were to actually spend the money for even used components to try and sell it as a rideable bike there is no way I’d come close to breaking even.

I want to say that I bought the whole bike used for 400 bucks 8 or so years ago, Stripped out the good stuff for a LHT (now gifted to a very dear friend), and I’m pretty much totally in the recumbent camp now (except for my Fuji Track Fixie), so anything that comes in is a bonus.

A lot will depend on how well I can write to copy to some degree… but if I can convince people on the internet to spend 40 - 100 bucks for a pen, I should be able to sell a bike frame. :)

I went to make up 25 rounds of 7.7x58 Arisaka for an old Japanese Type 99 I have. Someone before me sporterized it so I keep it as a hunting rifle. I set the calipers for a minimum OAL of 3.1” and start putting them together. My, I think, those 174 gr BTHPs are seated really deep. I go back and look again this morning and realized that the battery in my calipers is almost, but not quite, dead. Last nights 3.1” was really 2.86” … Major whoops moment! Bullet puller time! Though I hadn’t crimped them yet so I’m just pulling them out enough to reseat with the properly set up die.

You are welcome. I just looked at the NWS maps and it looks like a very bad commute tomorrow morning. forecast.weather.gov

E gad, look like we’re getting it too. Not that far from you here in Jersey, so I guess I’m not really surprised. I’m glad they’re delivering my groceries today.

Gah! It’s all a conspiracy to keep me from going out and playing with my camera. I blame Obama. No wait, I blame Bush.

Hey, RWC, you’ll appreciate this tale.

Oh crap! You lucked out? I hate swinging that weird hammer. Back when D_L was running .40 in a STS 2011 gun set up for IPSC/IDPA, I forgot those were to be long loaded as compared to factory spec. Feeding issue given the shape of what was really a 1911 frame and throat. Maybe 250 since I was using a quick Dillon 1050 for reloading. Heh I took a couple dozen apart and sold the rest.

re: #212 rosiee

BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The grouping was originally known as “BRIC” before the inclusion of South Africa in 2010. The BRICS members are all developing or newly industrialised countries, but they are distinguished by their large, fast-growing economies and significant influence on regional and global affairs; all five are G-20 members. As of 2013, the five BRICS countries represent almost 3 billion people, with a combined nominal GDP of US$16.039 trillion, and an estimated US$4 trillion in combined foreign reserves.

Oh yeah. That’s totally “Third World”.

STFU and sit down.

SICKENING: During the #SuperBowl, American consumers will eat a total of 1.25 BILLION wings (300 MILLION+ chickens) bit.ly

Wings are in the oven as I type this. Thank you PETA!

I remember when wings were about the cheapest protein you could buy. Now I’m seeing wings running for more than boneless chicken breast fillets. I don’t even want to figure out what the cost per pound of actual meat is for wings.

Of course, I’m doing spareribs myself, and they used to be super cheap too. Of course pork jumps up and down like crazy.

What I love are some of my old cookbooks that talk about VEAL… and how it’s such an economical cut of meat, especially if one is trying to stretch the budget. ROFLMAO.

It seems ever since the Janet JAckson nipple thing (and probably well before it) Superbowl sunday has become a national day of outrage. “They’re corrupting the youth!”, “I’m offended by someone’s religion!”, “Some player talked about politics!”, “That commercial hurt my feelings!”. We could easily just skip the game and have the outrage.

You may be able to exploit some Cannondale nostalgia. There are no more being made in the US, and some people are still upset at the former owners for pursuing the motorcycle project that supposedly fatally wounded the company.

Since this thread is deader than Denvers Dreams, you probably won’t see it, but thanks. I hadn’t considered that aspect. Probably write the copy and photograph it tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes.
