Hey Charles (and any other Tommy fans):

If you want to hear a fairly good live recording of how Emmanuel actually sounded playing 80s power pop with the Australia/New Zealand band Dragon (performing under the name Hunter at this time), check out their set as they opened for Tina Turner in Europe in 1987.

Not so incidentally, most of the 1% still have to work for a living, and therefore know better than to say such stupid things.

Zell is in the 0.0001% or higher, doesn’t have to work for a living, and has fallen prey to the common delusions of the plutocrat class.

I think what we’re seeing in this economy is a brutal triage where people end up in one of the following categories:

1) The users (tiny fraction of the population)

2) The used (most of those who work for a living)

3) Those who are deemed not worth using (everyone else)

Agreed, despite my distaste for the idea of open carry of handguns.

There’s no point in running for TX gov as a (D) if you’re going to commit seppuku on the gun issue.

Especially in this day and age of the TPGOP having such a crushing grip on TX politics; TX Democrats start their their political races with one arm and a leg tied behind their backs.

21 goddamnedfrank  Thu, Feb 6, 2014 4:09:25pm

In any event concealable handguns are the problem. Open carry makes certain people uneasy, but that’s also what makes it less than conducive to criminality. If people want to play cowboy IMO that’s their business, as long as they don’t do it in bars, schools, or other government buildings.

22 Justanotherhuman  Thu, Feb 6, 2014 4:11:33pm

Here’s the apology. Cue outrage from Russia Greensnow in 1, 2, 3…

“The State Department’s top official for Europe apologized today after being caught making a crude and dismissive remark about the European Union, one of America’s top allies.

“The spokeswoman hinted that Russia had taped and leaked the phone call, calling it “a new low in Russian tradecraft.”

A Texan Democrat is (usually) to the right of a New England Republican. I said usually because with the rise of the tea party there are some virulent exceptions in New England.

But back to the specific a lot of people should look harder at Wendy Davis’s track record of supported legislation. That way if/when she wins they’re not running around crying at how she betrayed her liberal principles.

(For the record I plan to vote for her. I just do so knowing what compromise I’m taking to avoid the much worse Republican candidate.)

This is why I’ll be voting for Alison Lundergan Grimes in November for Kentucky Senator. I seriously disagree with her on several policy issues (including the gun issue) but she is overwhelming preferable to McConnell overall.
I’m sane enough to realize that there is no candidate out that with whom I’ll agree 100% (not even Obama), otherwise I’d just sit home and not vote.
And that isn’t gonna happen ever.

It’s not that unusual here. Hikers and mountain bikers often carry because we have a lot of cougars around, and after or before their outings they could be in town or at the grocery store getting supplies.

Ukraine leader to Sochi as Kremlin warns action against “coup”

….the Kremlin aide, a key Putin adviser on Ukraine, added to the Cold War ambience of Russia’s first Olympics since 1980 by warning that Moscow could intervene to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty under the terms of the 1994 pact with the United States under which Kiev gave up nuclear weapons inherited from the Soviet Union.

For the time being, however, that seemed a distant threat.

I don’t know if I’d call the threat “distant”. Maybe until after the Olympics.

I don’t know. I can’t remember actually hearing of any illegal shooting incidents, or shooting incidents at all for that matter, that involve one openly carried and holstered handgun.

I guess a lot of the mass shootings technically started off with open carry, some asshole walking in with an arsenal of tactical bullshit. But I never heard a problem from those dude’s who used to flock to Starbucks during mating season and preen themselves while strapped.

Portland and especially Seattle have significant hills, so it doesn’t take much snow to make some areas sketchy as hell. The Midwest and East Coast cities are comparatively flat.

Yeah, the freezing rain is the worst. We haven’t had a good ice storm in quite a few years but they can shut down the city for over a week if they’re bad enough. They don’t use salt on the roads here, it makes the Spotted Owl burgers too salty (old joke)

I don’t have a problem with open carry laws. Some people do. Hell, I remember a incident back in 1973. I was walking down a rural road with a 12 gauge single shotgun over my shoulder heading out for some pheasant hunting.

Some lady saw me and called the cops because I had a gun. When I was stopped, I told them were I was going and showed them my hunting license and was allowed continue on my way.

The reason why she called? Children shouldn’t have guns.

She was (after my parents called to find out why I was stopped) from California.

When I was stationed up in Alaska at the Arctic Testing Center, we had a cow and calf moose that lived near the airfield. In the winter it’s easier for them to walk on the road than to push through heavy snow. If they were on the road you just had to sit and wait for them to move on. If you honked at them, they tended to regard it as a challenge. Only place I know where I could walk in 15 minutes late, and just say “moose on the road” and it was all good.

I believe that more people are killed each year in Alaska by moose than by bear.

RBS

When I lived in British Columbia and worked for the railroad, we had the same problem with moose on the line.

We’d keep a running score of moose vs. train over the winter. The train did not always win.

Everyone in the railroad had a freezer full of meat though.

I’m raving about framesets because I’ve been updating the spell checker script in the LGF Spy.

Our “normal” comments use a newer, sort-of stripped down spell checker, but the LGF Spy still uses the old prehistoric Javascript spell checker that uses a popup window.

The interesting thing is that the old frameset-based spell checker actually does a much better job, even though it looks clunky, because the back-end script uses the Linux aspell library commands to check spelling on the server. The aspell library is top notch, and if it doesn’t recognize a common word it’s easy to add it to a custom dictionary.

I admit, though, that I rarely use this feature myself - if I’m unsure about spelling I usually right click on the word to get a list of suggestions. But not all browsers have built-in spell-checking yet.

So here’s your chance to let me know if you prefer the popup window (the LGF Spy method) or the inline suggestions (the normal comment mode method).

121 Charles Johnson  Thu, Feb 6, 2014 6:08:45pm

The spell checking function is interesting because it’s one of the few cases where a frameset design makes a kind of crazy sense. The popup window ends up looking a lot like the spell checking window people are used to seeing in MS Word.

hosted.ap.org

When Democrats get tired of winning elections, they support Gun Control.

On a less snarky basis, this is not an important thing in Texas especially since they relaxed the law on inadvertent flashing of a concealed firearm but it allows her to stake out a non-threatening position on guns that will gain her more moderate GOP votes & independent votes as well as the votes of the liberal gun owners. Should she flush them all away or should she work to support all the people of Texas?

I find it funny while driving north of Toronto you see signs of moose silhouette as a warning to watch for them. As you get north and head into Quebec the signs change from a standing moose into a charging one. But nothing to be worried about :-)
