I think I’ve just witnessed a couple of the oddest things on TV that I have seen in quite a while.

Here I am at work, I go out to smoke a cigarette about twenty minutes ago; someone had the TV in our break room (which I have to go through to our smoking area). As I walk in, I hear Chubby Checker singing “The Twist”, look at the TV, and notice that Mr. Checker was indeed singing his hit…on Fox News…on Mike Huckabee’s show with a live band backing him and Huck and his studio audience getting into it. Nothing against Mr. Checker, because I love that song and he’s one of the icons of early rock-and-roll, but it just seems like an odd venue; to each their own, I suppose.

So, I then flip the channel to TruTV to see what’s on, so I can watch it through the outside glass door while I smoke; Hardcore Pawn is on, but before I can come back inside to flip it from that, during a commercial break, a commercial from FarmersOnly.com comes on to pimp their dating service for “farmers”, “ranchers”, and “country folk”, that “city folks just don’t get”, as they show video of some men and women doing chores out on the farm.

Again, to each their own, I suppose, but the producers of that commercial apparently love their Comic Sans, because they made use of it. That’s one of the few fonts that makes me want to retch, because it’s so overused.

That is from an accident. Instead of a steady slow pour into a spinning crucible that acts like a sprinkler with the molten metal, the pour rate exceeded the waters ability to chill it into spheres and freeze it. The spheres of copper were still molten enough to melt together, underwater on the side of a stainless steel funnel that is about 4 feet wide. Blew up the bottom of the barrel with a steam explosion too.

The report attributed 74 per cent of total civilian deaths and injuries in 2013 to anti-Government elements, 11 per cent to pro-Government forces (eight per cent to ANSF and three per cent to international forces) and 10 per cent to ground engagements between anti-Government elements and pro-Government forces. Five per cent of civilian casualties were unattributed, resulting mostly from explosive remnants of war.
“At the start of 2014, it is imperative that all parties, but particularly anti-Government elements, halt the worsening impact of the conflict on Afghan civilians,” Kubis stressed. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by anti-Government elements caused 34 per cent of all civilian casualties, according to the report, while ground engagements between parties to conflict caused 27 per cent and suicide and complex attacks by anti-Government elements caused 15 per cent.

It’s standard “Blame America First!” rhetorical tactics, heightened by the fact that Wikileaks is an effective mouthpiece for Russian intelligence. To be clear, it didn’t start out that way, but Russia has regained the capability to subvert foreign organizations developed by the KGB.

Now about Pie-onist’s query. That is some tortured language for sure. I think Dark_Falcon has the correct intended message.

But can it not also mean that the poor individual with a family that has to work two or more part-time positions also pays taxes into it all still can’t afford to buy what you can?

Using Dark’s Reagan example…the underpaid 70 hour worker is still not buying the ground chuck…they are getting the last day it is able to be sold hamburger and mixing that with breadcrumbs to extend it.

Many times I see things this way too. It is almost like creating a culture war amongst all the people hurting. And I think Fox and others have been very adept at doing just that. Divide and conquer. Gut the middle class and get them fighting for scraps with the lower classes. Meanwhile “YOU” gets to gather up all the bucks laughing as they deposit the check at the bank on their way out for a nice steak dinner and drinks.

Electronics seized from Georgia Tech student burned in apartment

Channel 2 Action News now knows police confiscated several electronics from the apartment of the Georgia Tech grad student who set himself on fire.

Saamer Akhshabi is at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta. Investigators said he suffered third-degree burns on 90 percent of his body.

Early on, Channel 2 learned police found a Molotov cocktail and plastic bottles containing flammable liquids.

Police released the 911 call and a number of new details in an incident report on Thursday.

Channel 2’s Erica Byfield reported when firefighters pulled up to Akhshabi’s apartment on 10th Street in Midtown Atlanta, he was still on fire.

The report also reveals investigators also took three laptops, three cellphones, two jump drives and homemade movies from Akhshabi’s apartment.

Lastly, the report listed a witness - Byfield found out the witness is also a Tech grad student.

One of Akhshabi’s neighbors called 911.

The FBI is heading up the investigation.

It may strike you as true, but it is wrong. Addiction has claimed the lives of people with “sound moral structure” surrounding them as much as the “libertines” in Hollywood. The reason we don’t hear about them is because they are usually out of the public spotlight, unlike the performers we see daily on the Internet.

But I don’t see that as the most salient point in the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Rather, Hoffman was in a good bit of psychological distress and did not deal with it properly. His use of heroin was a failure in his duty to his children, but it was less a fundamental moral failing and more that he was trying to self-medicate.

The reason I didn’t do most of the drugs and alcohol out there others were doing is not because religion told me it was wrong, but because I didn’t wish to do myself harm, but that wasn’t it entirely. I also didn’t want to do my children harm, either, lose a job, wreck my precarious financial position, etc..

These are material considerations, not “moral” ones.

I guess I can see the argument for the practice, it does make for a more concise headline. Instead of New Study Shows Vitamin C Reduces Cancer Risk the BBC would say Vitamin C “Reduces Cancer”. I would still prefer the longer headline because it’s more informative because it tells who is making the claim. then I can judge if the article is worth reading. Otherwise I have no idea if it’s a peer reviewed study or a holistic guru/interior designer making vitamin claims using a Ouija board.

I think it’s that the elder cat is a neurotic mess with the unfortunate feline trait of enjoying knocking things off shelves or other high places.

She is causing behavior modification. One of my dresser drawers now holds my wallet, money clip, cell phones, and keys since I got sick of picking them up off of the floor every morning. Toilet paper is now longer put on the dispensers as well since she goes in and unrolls it.

It doesn’t discriminate by race, religion, economics or anything else. This one hits home for me. I have a brother who refuses to clean up (I have had to cut ties to him as a result), a brother in law who just entered treatment for the first time, assorted relatives with alcohol problems, alcoholism killed my maternal grandma and those are just the ones I know about. I had my own issues with Quaaludes as a teen and drinking entirely too much years later. It’s an illness, just like diabetes and Ben needs to shut his piehole about addiction til he either sees it first hand or does some freaking research. He’s a spoiled little buffoon/hack.

Yeah, but Shapiro is blaming liberal Hollywood. Which is bullshit. Addiction doesn’t just live in liberal places (whatever the hell that means), it lives EVERYWHERE. It doesn’t discriminate by race, religion, economics or anything else. This one hits home for me. I have a brother who refuses to clean up (I have had to cut ties to him as a result), a brother in law who just entered treatment for the first time, assorted relatives with alcohol problems, alcoholism killed my maternal grandma and those are just the ones I know about. I had my own issues with Quaaludes as a teen and drinking entirely too much years later. It’s an illness, just like diabetes and Ben needs to shut his piehole about addiction til he either sees it first hand or does some freaking research. He’s a spoiled little buffoon/hack.

Exactly, addiction is something that effects rich, poor, man, woman, black, white, liberal, conservative, etc. To try to blame “Hollywood” and “Liberalism” for addiction is just a pathetic attempt by Shapiro to use the tragedy of Hoffman’s death to smear the left and Hollywood. It’s really sad that the guy’s whole take on anything is to blame the left which is funny since IIRC he comes from a liberal family.

When I went to bed last night the freezing rain was still falling and all the trees were creaking and groaning under the weight. I thought for sure I’d wake up to no power. I have electricity but others aren’t so lucky.

It’s pretty bad but I’ve seen worse. 6 or 7 years ago we had an ice storm that kept everything frozen solid for over a week. this should clear up in a couple days.
