Fox News Objects to Obama Calling Climate Change a Fact

Media Matters

On the February 7 edition of Fox News’ Special Report, guest host Chris Wallace set up a segment on proposed carbon emission regulations by protesting that “President Obama has declared climate change a fact,” despite “objections from many dissenters.”

Correspondent Doug McKelway followed up with a report that continued to cast doubt on the existence of climate change and featured a professional climate misinformer, Climate Depot’s Marc Morano, whose financial ties to the fossil fuel industry went undisclosed.

It is no wonder. Fox always objects to facts. They even distort the ones they want to try and make positive for the politicians they support.

2 Rocky-in-Connecticut  Sun, Feb 9, 2014 6:41:51am

Faux News does even pretend to even appreciate facts in favor of ideology and Conservative dogma.

What is more important to Faux News associates and viewers is the person actually relaying the information. This is why a Nobel Prize-winning scientist will never be given air time on Faux News, and instead what their viewers see are an endless parade of Christian college trained chuckle-heads and right wing think tank dogma freaks.

You take any of the regular Faux News contributors and anchors anywhere else in the world and they would be laughed out of the country. Instead, here in ‘Merica they find a vast audience, a solid 25% or so of the country who really does think the Andy Griffith Show was some sort of documentary, and the Bible was magically written by an invisible sky god.

But nary a word if someone calls creationism fact because it’s in the Bible.

When one of the most popular media networks in America is teaching its followers to believe in outright lies, we have a big problem.

Actually, their audience is not that great. An outside estimate would be 3 million people over the age of 12. (One recent day’s ratings)

That’s more than MSNBC or CNN, but a vast majority do not watch FOX Noise.

ClimateDepot.com is being financed by the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, a nonprofit in Washington that advocates for free-market solutions to environmental issues. Public tax filings for 2003-7 (the last five years for which documents are available) show that the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the ExxonMobil Foundation and foundations associated with the billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife….
……..
According to a report [pdf] issued by the Union of Concerned Scientists, from 1998-2005, approximately 23% of the total ExxonMobil funding for the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow was directed by ExxonMobil for climate change activities.

No, but the echo chamber is many times the size of the actual audience. You see Fox talking points repeated all over the ‘net and on the editorial and letters to the editor pages in newspapers across the country.

Greenwald is still ranting about Clapper using the word “accomplices” to refer to journalists who are profiting from Snowden’s theft.

His fear is obvious. He’s very worried about the possibility that he may have broken laws.

20 lawhawk  Sun, Feb 9, 2014 10:33:47am

Who actually understand that climate change is indisputably a fact?

Climatologists.

The ones who actually study this stuff.

Not media hacks at Fox News or the shills that come on to claim that climate change or global warming isn’t happening because it’s currently cold in NYC or that there have been major snowstorms across the US, as if that’s the only part of the globe that sees weather.

At the same time that the polar vortex was hitting much of the US, record heat was baking Australia. That didn’t get nearly the same play on Fox, because it would have undermined their claims that global warming doesn’t exist.

The trends tell the tale, and it’s that the planet’s gotten progressively warmer, and selectively picking and choosing data points like the Fox News shills do can’t hide that fact either.

First, I wasn’t addressing the entire rightwing puke funnel. I was addressing the audience numbers for FOX News, which are actually relatively puny when compared to broadcast network news, even.

Second, I wouldn’t assume the talking points (which I agree are there) originate with FOX. Probably someone in the GOP Ratfvcking Division, or on the Hill. It would be an interesting study to perform to see how something spreads through the “network” of Internet sites, hate talk radio and FOX News.

Many years ago (maybe still going on), newspapers got an advance copy of the NY Times’ front page, and other newspapers would choose to follow the Times’ lead (agenda-setting), so it’s not unheard of, but not strictly tied to a “vast audience” for FN itself.

Being a journalist doesn’t make you immune to being charged with espionage.

But being charged and being convicted are two different things and that’s where Greenwald may take solace. With the right dudebros makeup of the jury, he might come out unscathed, or emboldened to do even more “reporting”.

It’s pretty unlikely that Greenwald will be charged with crimes, but I think it’s very telling that he’s so upset at the suggestion. Not to many people pay attention to the people who stand to gain economically by people being caught ill prepared by climate change.

That is part of that well-oiled Republican parroting machine. I am not sure if it all starts at Fox, but damn by mid-day everyone on the far right is repeating it all the way up to congressmen and senators. It is sad.

What I don’t ever get is why people are not offended by the parroting. I hear that kind of stuff and all I think is someone is trying to brow beat me. And, there is a huge lack of intelligence and creativity in that style too.

The hypocrisy here is amazing:

This is the guy who answers every criticism of Edward Snowden by saying there’s NO PROOF for the charges, accusing President Obama of directing DNI Clapper to use the word ‘accomplices’ — with no proof whatsoever.

And when someone pointed that out to him, he links to an article:

The article is simply a report that Clapper used the word. There’s absolutely nothing in it that even remotely suggests Obama “directed” him to do so.

How serious is Fox?
A while back I did an image search in an effort to learn just which Fox News presenter was which. In the process I learned; indeed, could not help learning; that there are a number of websites devoted to nothing but capturing screen shots of the Fox babes when they inadvertently (?) expose their under garments or the adjacent areas of flesh. Sitting around for hours waiting for a grainy flash seems a singularly odd thing to do when there are terabytes of the most graphic pornography available for free on the ‘net. My hypothesis is that the geezers who watch Fox do not have the latter option, for fear the old lady will find out and put saltpeter in their Geritol or something. To the best of my knowledge there are no similar sites for MSNBC or PBS.

By calling climate change a fact, President Obama is simply doing his job. When a significant percentage of Americans deny scientific consensus, one thing a president can do for the country is to say publicly what the scientific consensus is. It’s in America’s interest when more and more Americans are accepting of science.

The difference is that the Russians spent $51 billion in just the past seven years to build what should have been gleaming new structures, infrastructure, and sports venues, and instead we’re seeing lots of problems with plumbing, elevators, etc.

The photos of the NYC housing authority buildings and rampant mold, crumbling walls and plumbing, or problems with the LA school district buildings shows what happens when you neglect basic infrastructure.

Both show what happens with misplaced priorities, graft and corruption.

So you’re saying that due to Obama and the Democrats we now face a huge “shoddiness gap” where it takes the US decades to match what the Russians can do in one or two years?!? We must act immediately to close this gap - perhaps first by gutting housing and building regulations that prevent us from properly matching their abilities.

You take any of the regular Faux News contributors and anchors anywhere else in the world and they would be laughed out of the country.

I’ve often stated that the Fox News staff is probably unemployable in their field, outside of Fox News. An outfit that doesn’t just tolerate incompetence and confusion but encourages it will attract and retain talentless, clumsy hacks to all of its positions, not just the public ones. I was on an AMA on Reddit once where a Fox News guy was trying to explain away the non-stop misidentification of scandal-plagued R’s as Democrats, which we’ve all seen, and I made the point that either deliberate or otherwise, it displayed incompetence if not malice, and that neither explanation was very flattering.

I mean, just picture your resume being one position at Fox News, famous for being dead wrong and clumsy as shit about it, and imagine who the hell would want to hire someone with such low standards? I know I wouldn’t. It will be interesting when the demographics start rapidly eating up Fox’s audience. What will happen to all those people once the only stupid people who will listen to them are no longer around?
