Glenn Greenwald’s super-duper new website has launch problems

$50M budget, and they use WordPress?
US News • Views: 25,613

Today was the launch of Glenn Greenwald’s much-ballyhooed news website, the one that eBay founder Pierre Omidyar has pledged $250 million toward, to help build a new media empire.

And it fumbled its launch.

These jokers got $50 million to start with (source: ibtimes.com), and what web application do they use? Something custom-made, backed by high-end servers ready to tackle millions of hits?

Nope. WordPress 3.8. Free, open-source content management software.

Don’t get me wrong, WordPress is great. I use WordPress for my own blog. But my IT budget is precisely zero. And my daily traffic is minuscule. WP is just not the kind of CMS I would choose for the rollout of a brand-new, well publicized, well funded website, with a well known writer at the helm.

Greenwald was promising new revelations about the National Security Agency (NSA).

“Today’s launch is just the beginning,” said Mr Greenwald. “Our day one story is significant and we have more coming. Laura, Jeremy, and I recognize the responsibility in front of us, and are thrilled to be embarking on this exciting and important journey.”

First Look Media said it would launch a flagship site and additional digital magazines later this year.

At launch, the site had teething problems with pages not able to be loaded.

“We aware that some users are having difficulty accessing our site. Sorry! Our tech team are on it & will fix asap,” the publication said on its Twitter account @the_intercept.

More: NewsRoomAmerica.com - First Look Media Launches ‘The Intercept’ With New NSA Allegations

Guess we’ll need to wait on those revelations till they restart the database server.

UPDATE: It appears the website is preliminary to a major rollout later this year. Judging from The Intercept’s “About” page, Greenwald, et al., wanted a platform for more intel provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and may not have prepared well for heavy web traffic.

Our short-term mission is to provide a platform to report on the documents previously provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Although we are still building our infrastructure and larger vision, we are launching now because we believe we have a vital obligation to this ongoing and evolving story, to these documents, and to the public.

firstlook.org

SECOND UPDATE: The site is not kicking out any database errors now, but it’s still slow, at least for me here in China.

THIRD UPDATE: I’ve changed the headline and content slightly for accuracy.

I don’t think the WordPress diss is a good one. As I mentioned in the LGF main page article, plenty of major tech sites use WordPress. Look at some of the clients for WordPress VIP.

If I were trying to get a site up quickly and had the cash to burn, I’d use WP VIP too. The problem seems more to be with handling all the traffic.

But is The Intercept using WP VIP? The source looks like plain vanilla WP 3.8.

8 Rev_Arthur_Belling  Mon, Feb 10, 2014 4:48:12am

re: #7 wheat-dogghazi

It appears they are not VIP, just from comparing some of the code to TechCrunch’s code. I wonder who their IT team is. We heard a lot about all the front end “stars” they’ve hired, but next to nothing about the IT staff.

Obama sitting at the Comm in the Oval Office: “Mr. Sulu, wait until Greenwald deactivates the site’s cloaking device, and then hit them again with phasers set to stun.”

Actually, I just started watching the animated Star Trek series that Netflix has, and I’ve got to say, these are MUCH better than I remember them being back when I was 7 or 8. Just watched the episode where Harry Mudd has sabotaged the Enterprise by breaking open a bunch of his Love Potion crystals and letting them waft through the ship’s air supply. So Kirk, Spock, Mudd, and Nurse Chapel are down on a planet trying desperately to get beamed back on board so as not to be eaten by some enormous stone critters, and we get a cut-scene up on the Enterprise, where there’s some early 70’s dance music playing, and a couple of engineers dancing away in the transporter room. And Leonard Nimoy gets to absolutely ham up his character as he and Kirk share a kind of Brokeback Mountain moment while trying not to get eaten. God, these are good!

Glenn Greenwald has his own tab on the navigation bar, but as of now it just goes to his “About ME!” page and there are a bunch of drooling Glennbot comments about how great and awesome he is.

FoxNews is concern trolling that President Obama is appointing more politically connected people to ambassadorships than his predecessors.

The facts? Well, a bit more nuanced than that.

For his 2d term, he’s picked more politically connected people, but his overall numbers are comparable to some of Obama’s predecessors.

Reagan appointed 62% career officials. Obama? 63%.

GWB and Clinton were both near 70% career appointees. GHWB was also nearly 70%. Ford was 61% and Carter was about 73%.

And should it be surprising that there are plum positions that are politically filled?

Some positions are nearly always filled by career foreign service officers, while others are almost always politically connected.

Bitcoin prices plunged again Monday morning after Mt.Gox, the major exchange for the virtual currency, said technical problems require it to continue its ban on customer withdrawals.

Mt.Gox said it has discovered a bug that causes problems when customers try to use their account to make a transfer or payment of bitcoins to a third party.

You seem to be obsessed with broad brushing progressives.

To be fair, Varek, if a series of articles all dealing with the same development had showed up at The Weekly Standard, Gateway Pundit and Breitbart.com, then many people here would be calling that development a “big hit with conservatives”. Killgore would likely be one of them.

4 articles on three sites is enough for him to state a conclusion. More evidence may refute that conclusion, but there can be no doubt that this latest Greenwald has gotten some traction on the left.

OT: I hate it when small local cell dealers spam the Craigslist “For sale” listings.

I’ve been without a cell phone since November, when I accidentally left mine on the back of my car and drove off.

I don’t have a fortune to spend on a new phone (I’m not upgrade eligible with my carrier until November) and I haven’t yet found much in my $150 range.

It hasn’t been terribly inconvenient being without one as I have a wifi tablet that’s substituted in some ways, but of course I am still stuck paying full price for mobile service that I can’t use because of the contract.

Hopefully I’ll find a good deal soon.

Iran Develops Centrifuges ‘15 Times More Powerful than Previous Generation’

Iran has developed a new generation of centrifuges which are 15 times more powerful than those currently being used to enrich uranium, its atomic chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Monday.

“We unveiled a new generation of centrifuges that surprised the Westerners … This new machine is 15 times more powerful than the previous generation,” he said, quoted by the state broadcaster on its website, iribnews.ir.

He said the development was not in violation of a November 24 agreement between Iran and six world powers that has imposed curbs on Tehran’s nuclear drive.

“We successfully argued that this was allowed within the research and development article in the agreement,” Salehi added.

Thousands of Iraqis Protest against Cartoon Insulting Iranian Leader

Thousands of Iraqi people took to the streets in Baghdad to condemn the publication of a cartoon insulting Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in Iraq’s Al-Sabah Al-Jadid newspaper.

The angry protesters, who had gathered in Baghdad’s Al-Ferdos square, urged the newspaper’s officials to apologize for their insult to the Iranian Supreme Leader.

Secretary-General of Al-Rasali Political Current and Member of Iraq’s Parliament Sheikh Adnan Al-Shahmani, who was taking part in the protest rally, called on the newspaper officials to apologize for their action.

Al-Shahmani also asked the Iraqi Syndicate of Journalists to fulfill its duty to confront such attempts and prevent misuse of the freedom of press for disrespecting Muslim religious leaders.

More specifically, the US government, which Greenie seems to consider fundamentally illegitimate and hopelessly corrupt. Other world governments are simply dupes, patsies, victims, or opponents of the US. Any opponent of the US is a brother in arms and consequently any sort of inconvenient violations of civil liberties on their parts are ignored as irrelevant to the Great Struggle.

The hard right in this country continues to insist Obama is on Iran’s side against Israel while the hard left elsewhere continues to insist Obama is Israel’s lap dog. Nothing like making a country into a political football.

In your opinion, which I don’t share.

Many of the worst, most dishonest right wing talking points originate at the Weekly Standard. For one example, the outright lie that the Obama kids go to a school with armed guards. A complete falsehood, never corrected even after being exposed. That’s not what a responsible media site does.

I liked our response.

“Freedom of the seas doesn’t just apply to fish. It applies to all maritime nations, all navies, everywhere — so long as they understand the responsibilities which come with that freedom,” the defense official said.

“So if they chose to send their ships to the Atlantic, I’m sure they won’t be surprised to find many, many others already there.”

They’ve made that claim several times in the past decade, but lack the capability to actually sail much beyond their immediate coastal areas. They aren’t a blue water navy by any stretch, and even if they were to sail out into the Atlantic Ocean, they’d still have to go 7,500 miles to get to US coastal waters (Bandar Abbas to NYC is 7,800 nm, but coastal waters are 200 miles). That’s a 15,000 mile round trip.

The range on the Alvand class frigate? 5,000 nautical miles.

Alternatively, they could try to get to within 200 nm of the Marianas. That’s much more likely, but it’s still in excess of 5,000 nm each way.

In other words, it’s a whole lot of huffing and puffing, but actual capabilities fall short.

Iran doesn’t have a helicopter carrier. Their largest ship is a frigate, which is about 2,000 tons displacement. That’s a quarter of the size of the smallest destroyers in the US navy - the Burke class, which are 8,300-9,800 tons displacement. Our smallest frigates are the Perry class, which are double the size at 4,300 tons.

The “helicopter carrier” they’re sending is really just a supply ship, but it carries enough extra fuel to allow it and the frigate to make the trip. Basically this is just a dressed-up deployment exercise.

Exactly. Iranian propaganda is trying to portray this exercise as some great act of defiance, as though we would like to stop them but don’t dare. In fact, the Iranians, like anyone else, can go where they like on the high seas.
If they violate the law of the sea, or otherwise take aggressive action, that freedom will disappear, and their ships will be donated as fishing reefs.

“Readers of the Intercept are encouraged to move to the new site and continue following the stories that are important to us. The Intercept was constructed in October of 2009 as an alternative to the dismal coverage of world events, national headlines, corruption and election fraud among local news outlets surrounding Tucson, AZ.

“The Intercept became a regular habit for us news junkies who share and sometimes construct or write various posts and news items for an expanding international audience. Providing this service has become an educational endeavor as we search through what is necessary to deliver credible, accurate, and meaningful information. The primary objective of this site is to bring readers closer to a realistic assessment of the world they live in with a sharper focus on the truth.”

Gay man could play pro football next year: Why make it a big deal?

Freepers, of course, proceed to make it a big deal, including the moth-eaten “showering with gay dude” meme.

This one conflates the manly man Michael Sam with a transexual:

“Will the he-she have it’s own shower facilities?”

This one, obviously, thinks he is irresistibly attractive to gay athletes. He should live so long:

I don’t have to shower with him. IF I DID, it would be an issue.

If some nitwit asks me how I would feel having a gay guy ogling me in the shower, I would be tempted to respond, “Simply thrilled, honey, simply thrilled!”

It hasn’t been terribly inconvenient being without one as I have a wifi tablet that’s substituted in some ways, but of course I am still stuck paying full price for mobile service that I can’t use because of the contract.

Another media outlet comes up short on women

Because I’m a woman and I am used to expecting the media to more or less fail when it comes to hiring, promoting, or amplifying women, I glanced at the staff page after I read the article. I was secretly hoping it would be diverse. I had tweeted Glenn Greenwald a few months back with a few concerns and he responded “Many — we will be aggressively diverse.”

Yet, as of launch date, only 3 of the 12 staffers are women. How is 1/4 of the staff being women meet the criteria of being aggressively diverse?

I think we should invite the oncoming Iranian battle fleet to make a port call/goodwill visit, free passes to topless bars, fatcat receptions, that kind of thing. Foreign navies do it all the time. Normally, the nearest Coast Guard district extends these invitations if the foreign ship has not asked first. This time, though, President Obama and the Commandant can make the offer in a nationally televised press conference.

While I think a lot of teams are going to use this as an excuse, he will go late if at all because of coming out.

That said, there were legitimate arguments about his performance - 9 of his 11.5 sacks were against teams that provided no competition. That padding of college schedules is a real problem.

My guess is he’s not as good as some but more than good enough for the NFL and the team that gets him will get a bargain with a chip on his shoulder about proving himself.

Ladies in binders are very nice, but only if they expressly and positively consent to be in them.

Ladies in binders is a mythological concept. These are the ladies that are about to be hired just as soon as the men doing the hiring can no longer resist the political pressure. If they were going to do it voluntarily, it would have happened years ago. Segregated binders are an obvious tip off that women are not being considered.

re: #181 William Barnett-Lewis

MMQB ran through the scenario and still thinks he’s a solid 3-4th rounder. Coming out actually helps since the issue can be addressed head-on by the teams and it doesn’t look like he was hiding, particularly when Missouri already knew.

A good team will look at the skills and how the player fits into the scheme. Many teams need defensive bodies, and he’s pretty athletic. You don’t get to be SEC defensive player of the year without having some skills.

He might find a spot on the D-line plus special teams, and MMQB indicated that Sam’s a team player and likely to do anything the team asks of him.

I’m rather curious that some teams are willing to overlook actual criminal behavior - felonies, assaults, etc., but they’re considering skipping Sam because he’s gay even though his skills suggest he belongs in the NFL.

If his skills say he belongs, a team will pick him up.

And he could bring a bounce on merchandise sales too, especially if he is as good as his accolades indicate that he is.

Somebody’s gonna get an absolute steal in that draft.

Seriously. SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Led the SEC in tackles and sacks. Finalist for the Lombardi Award. And now he’s somehow a less attractive draft candidate because he’s gay? Pfft. Someone is going to get a hell of a deal with him.

And honestly? I admire the kid for coming out before he gets drafted. Not only does it make clear which teams are stupid about these things and which ones aren’t, but it allows him a real life later on. Could you imagine the shitstorm if he got drafted first then came out, or worse, if he stayed in the closet and then got outed? Better to be upfront about it now.

re: #181 William Barnett-Lewis

My guess is he’s not as good as some but more than good enough for the NFL and the team that gets him will get a bargain with a chip on his shoulder about proving himself.

The reason he was originally a mid round estimate is because he is undersized for his position. Anyone that drafts him will probably move him fro DE to outside linebacker. One thing a lot of teams want to avoid is off field distractions. They may be willing to overlook it for a first round prospect, but it will make it that much tougher for a mid round guy. Someone will draft him and will get a decent deal. He won’t be an immediate starter so off field distractions wont be a huge issue and by the time he is starting I imagine it will be no big deal.

He’d draw even more hate if he’d gotten drafted first before coming out, or if he’d stayed closeted and gotten outed later on.

I hope whatever team drafts him realizes that he’s done them a favor by coming out now and getting it out in the open. Not only can he live openly and just focus on the task at hand, but they can get a PR strategy in place to rebuff the media.

Hit eBay…as one who’s sold more than a couple of phones after I or one of my brothers have upgraded, surely there’s a decent phone in your price range.

Thing is, Sam came out to his team last year and, from what I’ve heard or read, it was an open secret of sorts to others who know him. That said, some of the sports talking heads are saying that the rumor mill had been grinding some about this in recent months, so Sam decided to get out in front of this now; better to do that than to wind up on a team full of, owned by, or coached by homophobes (Minnesota Vikings, I’m looking at you).
