Left Wing Libertarians Join Forces With Far Right Ron Paulians to Complain About the NSA

The left and the far right meet in the Twilight Zone
Weird • Views: 20,758

Today the libertarians are holding an event they’re calling: The Day We Fight Back - February 11th 2014.

Sounds dramatic, right? Of course, in this case, “fighting back” means giving your email and phone number to them, and parroting one of the paranoid scripts they’ve pre-written for you. And to do so, you’re joining forces with Ron Paul’s extreme right wing Campaign For Liberty, one of their sponsors.

Yes, that would be this Ron Paul:

Ron Paul says “the South was right” in front of a giant Confederate flag

Would you give your private phone number and email address to the likes of Glenn Greenwald and his cronies? To Ron Paul’s cultish followers? Frankly, you’d have to be crazy to trust these people with your information.

To many of the dudebro and wingnut set alike, “protest” means “complain loudly”.

I don’t think they fully understand the intricacies of the concept.

Heck, you don’t even need to change out of those sweatpants. Or construct a breadhelmet.

Well, at least gold has intrinsic value as compared to say, the Bitcoin these nitwits were touting just a short time earlier. You know, like when Russia bans it, trading platforms stop issuing trades, and other governments look at it as a way for criminal enterprises to launder money.

Greenwald, the ACLU, esp, and the myriad lawyers who are caught up in all of this Snowden crap should actually know better, and it says one of 2 things about them: either they’re terrible at reading the law, or they simply want to ignore it to get what they want.

Actually, I think it’s both.

OT, but here’s a small sanity break.

The Ostrava Museum staff has an unusual task during the winter. In their free time, they take care of bats that people bring to the museum. Most of them are found weakened in the corridors of residential buildings or on the ground. In winter, bats in nature hibernate. With temperatures dipping below the freezing point, they wake up and try to find warmer habitats. This is often done several times during the winter. For such an effort, the bats often don’t have the strength to find a new habitat.

“Before, people brought bats to the Ostrava zoo, but at the zoo, there was only a special time when people could bring them in. Therefore, nowadays, people bring the bats to us ” said zoologist Mojmír Foral .

Currently the staff is taking care of only one female bat. She is striving to regain lost energy and strength. “We put them in a suitable environment and try to get them in good condition with replacement feeding. Then we let them hibernate in our cellar areas where they are not disturbed” said Foral . So what do bats eat in the winter ?

” We feed them mostly flour worms. They are available and mainly supply the weak and hungry bats with needed nutrients . This can be enjoyed but we also feed them crickets.” says Museum Assistant Director Michael Troszková, one of the main bat carers. He added that the bats most in need during the Christmas holidays he often takes home with him. This mild winter is by far a favorable one for bats, so the museum staff have only seen one that needed care. There have been winters when the employees have taken care of up to seven bats at the same time. When spring arrives, and when it is certain that there will be no additional temperature extremes, these small mammals are released into the wild.

“Before we throw them into the air we make sure that they are able to fly. If they are not in the best condition they must receive a bit more attention. But often the bats fly off okay.”says Foral.

That’s the translation (and my editing) of the story in our local Ostrava newspaper, which is here:

Woman shoots at a McDonald’s over missing bacon (VIDEO)

A Michigan woman shot at a McDonald’s after employees got her order wrong Monday morning.

Shaneka Monique Torres, 29, went through a Grand Rapids McDonald’s drive-thru on Sunday and was comped a free meal after workers forgot to put bacon on her sandwich. She went through the drive-thru a second time to redeem her voucher Monday morning around 3 o’clock and after her sandwich was bacon-free for the second time, she fired at the building Wood TV reports.

Torres was in the passenger seat and leaned over the driver, firing one round through the closed car window and restaurant window. No one was harmed.

Her photo is below. Expect racism to flow like a river over this one:

Trader Joe’s actually has a good reputation as a place to work for.

Whole Foods doesn’t have a horrible reputation in terms of its employment standards AFAIK, this specific incident notwithstanding. It’s more that the guy is a fervent opponent of “government meddling”, aka corporate taxes, subsidized healthcare etc.

His attitude is basically “I treat my employees right, so we don’t need the government to interfere”. This latest story shows exactly where the fallacy lies in that argument: it’s not up to CEOs to decide what constitutes “treating employees right”.

Trader Joes and Aldi are offshoots of the same Germany supermarket lineage.

Aldi Nord operates Trader Joe’s.

Aldi Sud operates Aldi in the US.

Both have a rather unique take on supermarkets that isn’t necessarily for everyone or every market.

We don’t have Aldi in the Czech Republic, but we do have their closest competitor; Lidl.

Lidl is where I buy the razors I use to shave my head; the Shark 2.0 5-blade system. A blister-pak of 4 replacement cartridges is the equivalent of $7.00 or so. Each cartridge lasts me two weeks.

Sweet. Saves big-time $$$.

That’s objectively true, although if you listen to what the Waltons say, it’s the same thing: we employ all these people, so who are you to tell us what standards we should be following.

There’s probably a whole lot of cognitive dissonance going on too. If you actually got into the walled compound and talked to the billionaires, I bet they would sincerely believe (most of them anyway) that they were doing good by their employees.

I think part of my response was about how Trade Joe’s and Whole Foods were being bundled as similar. I have been in the latter once or twice and think they are totally overpriced and playing to a market segment I do not consider myself part of. I find the Trader Joe’s priced comparable to over markets I frequent (Wegman’s) and a place to find some particular products I like that I have difficulty finding elsewhere. So I basically split my shopping between Trader Joe’s and Wegman’s based on what items I am after, immediate need*, and convenience.

* - Trader Joe’s being within walking distance while the Wegman’s is at least a 30 minute drive away. I tend to hit the Wegman’s once every week or two to stock up when coming back from running other errands like buying cat food and cat litter.

NBC speculates about the target’s identities….
U.S. Al Qaeda Suspect Facing Drone Strike Is in Pakistan: Source

According to NBC counter terrorism consultant Evan Kohlmann, there is one terrorist group with two American militants in Pakistan who fit the description.

Kohlmann said two Americans, Saifullah al-Amriki and Abu Ibrahim al-Amriki, have appeared in propaganda videos for the Islamic Jihad Union (IJU), a terrorist group affiliated with al Qaeda. The names are nom de guerres — “al-Amriki” means “the American” — and the duo’s real names are unknown, he said.

IJU was behind a failed attempt to attack Germany’s Frankfurt Airport and Ramstein Airbase in 2007 and has repeatedly attempted to target Americans outside Pakistan and Afghanistan. The group has recruited and used Westerners in their attacks. Two of three alleged terrorists arrested in the foiled Frankfurt plot were Germans while the other was Turkish.

Still no journalists are willing to ask or speculate why the White House is leaking all this info.

One of the benefits of being poor: They never get my money for their overpriced stuff. I’ve never been in WF, TJ’s or any of those. They’re corporate assholes, too, so why go out of my way?

Trader Joe’s isn’t expensive (at least not by gentrified Brooklyn standards). I do a lot of shopping there. I never shop at Whole Foods.

Part of my Whole Foods disdain comes from the misfortune of hearing Mackey speak at a convention shortly after the 2012 election (I work in the food industry). This. Over the weekend I was futzing around with a blog I’m setting up for myself and I uploaded a file to test something. An hour or so later, just for the hell of it, I decided to go to the server and look at my recent visitors stats.

All the hits were from my IP address except one that belonged to Google—one of their crawlers had noticed the file and come over to take a look, probably indexing it, less than 10 minutes after I uploaded it.

We’re talking about a brand new, completely inconsequential blog with zero traffic that’s being written by a total nobody and has almost no content (yet).

Disagree.
The ACLU (and a few others) represents the “grain of truth” that is well below the hyperbole and histrionics of the glibertarians. This reminds me of the ACLU defending a KKK march way back when. 1st Amendment issue, not about the KKK. Sorry for the bold but looking to avoid a misread.

Grocery store marketing and price setting is pretty interesting (I once did some minor consulting work for a medium chain that’s not under discussion here).

Whole Foods can be surprisingly good value, especially on bulk items and own-brand stuff. They really stiff you on specifics though.

Trader Joes is basically selling branded goods without the brand - they famously are under strict orders not to reveal the source of many of their own brand products. They’re good for what they have, but don’t carry the same range as other stores.

The optimal price strategy for the shopper is to figure out what is cheap where and then stick strictly to that pattern. When you go for convenience, that’s where you end up paying more, which of course makes logical sense.

I have to watch blood sugar, and frankly, even though I like some grains like quinoa and even couscous which aren’t carried everywhere, a small box will last a good while because no one else likes those. And even if I frequent the farmer’s market we have in season, their selection is usually not very good (everyone has strawberries in May, for instance), and there are things they just don’t carry, like celery, broccoli, etc.

So, I know the local FL like a book and pretty well know when it’s time for them to put something on sale, and also when not to buy produce, for instance. It pays to get multiples of something if it’s a good deal, and to forego anything that gets hiked until the price settles. I also look for markdowns and clearance items, also. From week to week, I base the menu on what they have on sale, unless I’m totally out of something, which doesn’t happen too often (keeping a backup is one of my tricks in saving). We don’t throw much food away since we eat what we like, but the packaging is sometimes just overwhelming.

Right. And prices run generally higher since I live in the middle of a large city on the eastern seaboard. If I shop twenty miles out in the suburbs they do drop a little. If I get out to western PA visiting friends and go into the local Giant Eagle (Gynt Igyl) chain there the prices in general are even lower out there. So there are regional price differences in play as well.

For me it’s also a balance of location, bulk buying, and means of transport. If I need paper towels I wait for the weekly Wegman’s/errands trip and get a dozen rolls in bulk since I have the car. I don’t think the local Trader Joe’s even stocks paper towels. My other alternative for stuff like this is a 7-11, CVS, or something like that were there is a noticeable mark-up.

I also have the option of hitting local produce markets, the wholesale district, and some weekend farmer’s markets as well when looking for specific items or types of items.

Yeah, I was just noticing all the Facebook and twitter supporters. This whole thing sums up modern activism. It’s not meant to actually accomplish anything, nobody’s going to change anything including their own behavior. It’s a pointless display to give the protesters a sense of self worth and satisfaction. Note about Bob Marshall, he very nearly won the GOP nomination for senate here a few years back. As Varek will vouch, he’s Manassas’s version of Rick Santorum. This is the same seat by the way where the guy who denied spousal rape was going to run but decided not to because he was worried about the balance of the state senate. Marshall will be the TP’s favorite in this race to be sure. I really hope I do not get this vile fuck as my Congressman.

“Ugandan police have issued many terror alerts over the past year, warning that the al-Qaida-linked Somali militants of al-Shabab may be plotting an attack similar to the assault last September on an upscale mall in the Kenyan capital. At least 67 people were killed in that attack.”

That’s a good example. I think the difference is the tactics. A generic protest that involves marching, chanting slogans or retweeting something is very unlikely to get anything done. Getting things on the ballot, getting out the vote or whatever is much more productive. I think too many people get caught up in the act of protesting and the symbolic gestures that they overlook the part about actually getting things done.

True tactics do matter for something. I think having first and second hand experience with activism involving drugs, I think the reason they’ve been successful is they’ve made their whole argument more “Marijuana smoking is an individual right and the government should stay out of it” and less “Dude I Want to smoke up a fatty and watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force.”

Not Building Confidence at All

FBI agent Kevin Kelley was investigating Muslims in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2004 when he checked the wrong box on a terrorism form, erroneously placing Rahinah Ibrahim on the no-fly list.

What happened next was the real shame. Instead of admitting to the error, high-ranking President Barack Obama administration officials spent years covering it up. Attorney General Eric Holder, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and a litany of other government officials claimed repeatedly that disclosing the reason Ibrahim was detained, or even acknowledging that she’d been placed on a watch list, would cause serious damage to the U.S. national security. Again and again they asserted the so-called “state secrets privilege” to block the 48-year-old woman’s lawsuit, which sought only to clear her name.

Holder went so far as to tell the judge presiding over the case that this assertion of the state secrets privilege was fully in keeping with Obama’s much-ballyhooed 2009 executive branch reforms of the privilege, which stated the administration would invoke state secrets sparingly.

My bro may be a dude, but he’s not 100% dudebro. He linked to this on FB.

I Took Off My Hijab
By adding more layers. A knit hat and scarf around my neck to be exact.

I didn’t understand what was happening at first. People started talking to me more. Women would speak to me like I knew them since forever. Men looked at me like I was actually approachable. And I was made to feel like I was actually from this planet.

Maybe I was finally fitting in? Maybe I was no longer self conscious about my unique dress code and a face lacking makeup?

[…]

I found this realization absolutely hilarious. And entertaining. I started paying more attention to the difference in the way people treated me. It was fun feeling like everyone around me believed I belonged in their culture by default, and not as part of the begrudgingly adopted diversity piece of the pie. It was a good feeling. I secretly started looking forward to venturing out into the cold to further explore what it meant to be “normal.”

I became even more confident walking in my city. My city. All the stares were not racially related anymore. I was addressed as “lady” and “little lady,” something I had never heard before. Men would hold doors for me. Women would crack jokes with me. I became respectable, lovable, and accepted.

But did that mean that *with* hijab I am not as respectable? I am not as lovable? I cannot be accepted? I immediately began to despise the inequality, and it dawned on me that I acted like someone who was bullied for years, and finally was accepted by the mean girls, having been alluded that the mean girls became nice to everyone. I was duped. When in fact nothing had changed, and I had simply crossed over to another world for one season.

OWS had a huge chance to accomplish something. Friendly national press coverage and lots of it. There are a lot of reasons why they failed but unfortunately they never got out of the “protest” part of waving signs and chanting and completely shunned the “getting stuff done” part. Maybe it was for the best but it’s always a shame to see a golden opportunity like that wasted.

Holy shit, KT, that’s the most measured response on OWS I’ve ever seen out of you.

I wouldn’t be upset if some woman smacked him literally for saying that. What a fucked up thing to say. I don’t know what is about conservatives and thinking some how people deserve to be raped. No one does. Outside of murdering someone, I think it’s about the worst thing you can to do someone.

Heh. Once in a class, a young male student here chose to express a similar sentiment to that expressed by Mr. Taranto. One of my other students, a young lady named Lenka, chose to express her opposition to his opinion by getting out of her seat, walking up to him and punching him right in the face. She then berated him (in Czech) for about three minutes for being a sexist asshole, and informed him she didn’t cotton to such remarks because her older sister had been brutally raped.

He apologized to Lenka for being an asshole.

As someone who literally had a window view of the whole thing, and often spent my lunch break chatting with people in Zucotti Park, I can tell you that they couldn’t get beyond the protest thing because they had so many different and sometimes mutually contradictory goals. The dreadlocked, barefoot girl who wanted global warming ended didn’t have a lot in common with the dude in the black t-shirt and the Guy Fawkes mask who wanted the Federal Reserve abolished.

I don’t blame her. Really, I don’t know when this attitude came that “Women who get drunk are as guilty as the men who rape them.” came about but I’m so sick of it. And the ongoing battle between different OWS parties continues to this day, including over the “ownership” of the twitter feed and who started the OWS movement.

Lots of petty nonsense, and my sense of going through and photographing the park on a regular basis found so many mixed messages and contrasting styles that it was a wonder they lasted as long as they did before they got extracted from the Park. They also had the entire gamut of groups protesting there - from anarchists and libertarians to End the Fed and those who wanted to reform the system, reinstitute Glass Steagall and those who were just pushing conspiracy theories and getting attention simply by latching on to the scene there.

If you’d ever consider a savory pie, I’d recommend Vidalia (or other sweet) onion pie.

Like a quiche — sautee 3-4 large sliced onions until caramelized (whatever method you’d prefer), pour into a prepared pie shell, add swiss (or other), then a simple milk/egg custard. Bake until set.

I love sweet and/or caramelized onions, so it’s a winner for me. YMMV.

(Serve with a nice green salad!)

This is a bigger issue that just Taranto. The US hard right is steadily getting more unreasonable about women on many fronts. Approving of wage inequality, fostering rape culture, and incessant abortion legislation, to name three of many, is a toxic mixture of frankly evil policy positions.

The War on women by the right is a simple fact, but like many truths these days it is dismissed as simply being part of the “Democrats say —- Republicans say” narrative.

What kind of pie should I make this week? I want to try something different.

Well, there’s always peanut butter. Not the one that’s basically peanut butter cheesecake. instead the one that’s

a) prebaked pie shell
a1) (optional) thin layer of chocolate ganache
b) half filled with peanut butter creamed with sugar (about 1:1 ratio)
c) finished filling with an egg yolk custard
d) completed with a meringue using the whites left from the custard.

On the one hand the exposure of the racism of large swaths of this nation in consequence of electing a black president has been painful. On the other hand the exposure is forcing us to see it and decide where we stand. And while you won’t realize it looking at the noise-makers, the reality is that there’s a lot of rejection of that position in the general public. In the long run it’ll help clean up the problem. (not eliminate it, just remind people why we have these sorts of laws on the books.)

I expect the same sort of thing when a woman gets elected president, regardless of whom and when. Bluntly it’s been present when women have become governors, it’ll just be louder and without cover of “oh it’s just them over there”. It won’t be fun. It will in the long run, however, be good.

Or so i believe.

So the phone screen I had today happened early. She called about 2:40 and we talked for about 20 minutes. I thought it went well. She just asked basic screening questions, wanting me to talk about some of my previous positions, my education, and to rate some of my skills. I also had the dreaded salary conversation and told her I could start as soon as they made a decision.

As it turns out, not only do they have the Biz Dev position I applied for, but they’ve also got an open Account Executive role that’s more my speed since it’s more about account management than straight sales. I asked about it and she said the same manager is hiring for both, so I asked if I could be considered for both or if I had to send a second application. She said she’d make a note that I was open to either job.

I should know in the next day or two if they want me to come in for an interview. The latest I’d have an answer is in a week. Here’s hoping.

I think you might have one. : ) Fingers will be kept crossed.

What kills me is that the screener I did today was for a company I applied to over the weekend. from the article:

Bennett assured the commission that if lines are longer in 2014 as a result of these changes, he would ask them to revisit the decision in 2015, before the 2016 elections. But it is unclear whether voter accessibility is a sincere priority for him. In 2011, while serving in the Florida Senate, he endorsed making it hard to vote: “I wouldn’t have any problem making it harder. I would want them to vote as badly as I want to vote. I want the people of the state of Florida to want to vote as bad as that person in Africa who’s willing to walk 200 miles…This should not be easy.” He made that comment as he supported a voter suppression bill that reduced the number of days for early voting in Florida and helped create long lines across the state.

This makes it very clear that the GOP has no principles at all, and is merely trying to seize the levers of power whenever and wherever it can, in order to line the pockets of its backers.

Perhaps that is why the GOP et al. is so heavily into denial. The truth isn’t pretty.

I can’t think of anyone any more who could be termed “moonbat” except maybe Code Pink or PETA.

The more reason to keep the distinction.

Moonbats may tend to be completely cray-cray, but dudebros have that, plus completely fucked-up views of diplomacy, law enforcement, monetary policy, and how pretty much the rest of (the US) government is supposed to work.

freepers’ reactions still at sputtering phase

Perhaps the talking points for this have not yet been issued. The 101st chairborne needs clear orders before it springs into action.

At least three of the GOP yes votes were reps from my old home state of NJ. They’re what passes for moderate in today’s TPGOP.

So, Alouette/Decatur Deb, from yesterday’s convo: are these moonbats or dudebros? Or, just all around assholes?

No science here, but I’ve always thought the Libertarians to be 1/3 left and 2/3 rightwing (often in the same breath. In either case they tend to stay in a high hover, crapping on whichever wing they engage.

freeper satire

Whenever the rare opportunity to reduce the size of the Spendaholic Federal Government approaches a decision point, the unchallenged and therefore invincible Obamanation Congressional Format, ( OCF ), unfolds flawlessly as follows:

* Permissive, weak and cowardly Speaker “Doormat” Boehner proclaims that THIS time he will protect and defend the US Constitution;
* “Assistant Doormat” Cantor will nod like the bobble head lap dog that he is;
* Cave-In, Con-Artist Ryan will make a side deal with his Pelosi Pals;
* “Rubberstamp” Reid will then approve whatever the Pelosi Pals have shamed Ryan into ramming through the House;
* Lazy, Anti-Work Obama will say “The OCF worked again! That was sooooo EASY!”
* The Left Stream Media will gently boo Boehner, while mildly applauding his “Bipartisan” Leadership;
* “Doormat” Boehner will then slink off sobbing, relieved that he dodged another major tongue-lashing from the Left Stream Media;
* Karl Rove will go on FOX and say “The Moderate House Republicans are showing that they are willing to work with Obama;”
* Krauthammer will go on FOX and say “Unbelievable;”
* The Conservative voters will say:
*** “Yup, permissive RINOs are no match for the Commies, Socialists and Democrats in Congress.
*** We are doomed to feel sorry for ourselves, again.
*** What shall we do?
*** Sigh - - - - .”

Guess I shouldn’t be surprised that my Rep decided that blowing up the economy was okay.

Fuck’em, more reason to vote for the Democrat next year.

re: #261 EPR-radar

Men do need to step up and do the right thing, but since women can vote, they actually can single-handedly drive this crap to the political margins by abandoning the GOP en masse. That’s the really stupid thing about the GOP war on women.

If Hillary Clinton ends up with the (D) nomination, I expect a tsunami of misogyny from the right, the likes of which has never before been seen.

If that ends up mortally wounding the GOP by further widening the gender gap, the punishment would truly fit the crime.

Hence the current TPGOP efforts at the preemptive strikes against HRC right now by rehash Bill & Monica’s episode and Hillary’s actions to all of that.

They have absolutely nothing else to go with…and it, along with Benghazi, is going be all were gonna hear about her from the RWNJs, from now through the primaries.

That works for me. As alluded to upthread, it may be better to get the racism and misogyny we have in the US vividly on display, so that people can either support it or turn away from it without being able to hide their support behind a facade of civilization and denial.

I think this is very much the political analogue of lancing a festering carbuncle —- most unpleasant, but probably a necessary part of healing.

It’ll be Benghazi and Blowjobs clear through till the election. And it won’t be as fun as it sounds.

OUTRAGE!

As a Scouter, as an Eagle Scout, and as the brother of a gay man, I say good on him (and his Scoutmasters); doing it right, earning Eagle is not an easy thing (somewhere between 2-4% of Scouts earn the rank).

That said, National’s current policy, even with the membership policy changes, still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, because the current allowance of gays in the BSA is limited to youth members (under 18 in Boy Scouting, under 21 in Venturing); adults and youth who have “aged out” need not apply.

Unless National changes the policy again to allow gay adult members as well, we’re gonna have a lot of kids, many of them Eagle Scouts, who want to continue working in Scouting once they they’ve aged out and they’re gonna be told, “Sorry, but because you’re gay, you’re no longer welcome in Scouting because you’re now an adult.”

It’s utter horseshit.
