Dallas Sportscaster Obliterates Football’s Anti-Gay Hypocrisy

It’s ‘time to celebrate’ Michael Sam, not condemn him.
Sports • Views: 33,895

Here in Texas, football is damn near a religion. Friday Night Lights wasn’t just a book, or a film, or a TV series. It’s real life. It’s hard for people outside this state to understand, but that’s just how it is.

Texas is also a deeply red state. For all our self-proclaimed weirdness here in Austin, we are the exception in Texas, not the rule. There is a Republican super-majority in the state Legislature. Both our Senators have an (R) after their names. By my count, 24 out of the 36 US House districts are Republican.

When a YouTube video of WFAA sportscaster Dale Hansen addressing Michael Sam’s coming out started making the rounds on Facebook, I cringed. I wondered if it would be another in a long line of tiresome speeches about how Sam coming out as gay is a distraction and how he would negatively impact the NFL. Would it be another rant about how football is everything that is good and pure about America, like Mom and apple pie, and Michael Sam was ruining it by being honest about his life?

Imagine my surprise when Dale Hansen proved me utterly, completely wrong, and put all my fears to rest:

Youtube Video

In just over two minutes, Hansen destroys the hypocrisy in sports that accepts players accused of rape, or murder, or drugs, or violence, but condemns a man for being upfront about his sexuality. He also manages to call out the inherent right-wing idiocy about wanting government out of people’s lives but also wanting it in the bedroom.

Watch this video. It’s totally worth your time.

Rape, thievery and other sordid behavior is ok, not love though. Great commentary that sadly is in short supply in the world of professional sports.

Charles, why do you hate God?

[…]

Whereas, you applaud Michael Sam announcing that he is gay, I deplore the fact that you are removing the ancient landmarks that the fathers have set. Shame on you for denouncing biblical truth; Shame on you for not calling sin—sin; Shame on you for telling people what they want to hear, rather than, what thus saith the Lord; Shame on you for being an “ear-scratching prophet.” -

[…]

But just as Rev. Sharpton stands by Michael Sam, Bible-believing Christians and custodians of the American Judeo-Christian cultural heritage must also be prepared to stand by any NFL team owner, coach, player, general manager, etc., who prefers not to have to deal with the distractions associated with an open homosexual player. The potential of having two players on the same team romantically involved with each other; or Michael Sam in romantic pursuit of Emmitt, Cam, Eric, Nate, or Larry against their objections must also be safeguarded by team management.

[…]

It says something spooky about the acceptable range of behavior gendered as “masculine.”

Violence, theft—those are understandable behaviors because guys being guys, alpha males, men are hunters and warriors….

Seeing as this is Texas we’re talking about here, it wouldn’t surprise me if the RWNJs are working up a complaint avalanche against Hansen and the station he works for.

Reminds me of the always-instructive comparison of what level of violence in a movie is needed to get a X-rating vs. how much sex in a movie is needed to make it X-rated.

Is there a list someone can just shove in the face of homophobic shit muffins of NFL players who have ACTUAL immoral behaviors to their, ahem, credit?

Michael Vick
Ray Lewis
Ben Roethlisberger
….who else? I’m sure the list isn’t short.

I’m sick of this macho horseshit, it’s not a contribution to the culture at all, and it’s just as harmful to men as it is women. It’s nauseating.

27 lawhawk  Wed, Feb 12, 2014 5:22:39pm

When football teams, and fellow football players can pay no mind to the fact that their fellow teammates have engaged in felonies, including manslaughter or murder, and be more than willing to welcome back with open arms all because they give the team the ability to win games, the fact that a player has declared his sexual orientation before the draft may somehow upset the delicate nature of the clubhouse/lockerroom shows just how batcrap crazy the ethics and morals are in those places.

Some teams are more attuned to how players act off-the-field and do due diligence on players who had reputations before going to the big leagues. Some will take chances on those kinds of players, hoping that they have a support network in place to make the transition happen smoothly and safely, and that the team does all it can to make the play adjust to the new system quickly and minimize the distractions.

But a guy’s sexual orientation is enough to throw all that into disarray? Really?

That says more about those locker rooms and teams than it does the player.

And I’m sure that Sam is looking at the reaction and looking at where/how he’ll be received by the teams around the league.

At least two killed by gunfire at Venezuela protests

Government officials said a Maduro supporter and one other person were killed amid chaotic scenes as a march against Maduro’s government and a rally to support the president ended just a few blocks apart in the city center.

“He was a comrade assassinated by the right-wing fascist hordes,” National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello said of the first victim, a community leader from a poor neighborhood.

With both sides blaming each other for the violence, the opposition said two student protesters had died, but there was no official confirmation.

Well, Stan’s a pretty big guy, so if he wants two bucks, it’s in your best interest to accommodate him. The one I love is when they charge a “Convenience Fee” for printing out the ticket yourself, rather than having them mail it or picking up at “Will-Call” window. That’s just money they get because they can.

For Venezuela, Bonds Create a Bind

When it comes to choosing between its own people and Wall Street, Venezuela’s socialist government has picked the latter—at least in regard to allocating foreign currency.

The oil-rich country pays its overseas bondholders right on time. But the cash-strapped government is in hock to the tune of $50 billion to the private companies that service its economy.

They range from oil contractors and airlines to supermarkets that need dollars to import everything from flour to toilet paper. The delays in foreign-currency payments to the private sector come as the government intensifies foreign-exchange controls adopted more than a decade ago by the late populist leader Hugo Chávez, who sought to contain rising dollar demand in an economy that depends on imports. The result: widespread shortages of basic goods.

A Statement about Laura and John Arnold Foundation’s Support for WNET
February 12, 2014

For Immediate Release
Contact: Leila Walsh

Today, David Sirota published an article regarding Laura and John Arnold Foundation’s funding of PBS affiliate WNET’s “Pension Peril” series. In his article, Mr. Sirota made false and incendiary allegations regarding Laura and John Arnold Foundation’s relationship with this grantee. Prior to the article’s publication, and at Mr. Sirota’s request, LJAF provided Mr. Sirota with information relating to the WNET grant. We regret that Mr. Sirota failed to accurately convey this information, which we include below.

WNET independently identified retirement security as an area of interest. It sought funding from a number of sources, including LJAF, for the “Pension Peril” series. LJAF approved a grant to WNET in the amount of $3.5 million. PBS and WNET are known for their in-depth coverage and objective reporting on a wide range of issues. We were pleased to support their coverage of a critical issue regarding the fiscal health of our cities and states.

From the outset, LJAF has respected and encouraged WNET’s full editorial autonomy. LJAF has never sought to influence in any way the content of the series, its programming schedule or any other editorial matter. Our grant to WNET was made with the explicit understanding that WNET would provide fully independent reporting. There are no provisions in the LJAF/WNET grant agreement relating to editorial content.

The agreement with WNET is in all respects our standard grant agreement, which LJAF has signed with virtually all of our grantees (for a list of such grantees, see arnoldfoundation.org). As we explained to Mr. Sirota, that standard grant agreement provides LJAF with the ability to stop funding in the event of extraordinary circumstances, such as fraud or the change of leadership of a grantee.

The stated purpose of the grant, as set forth in our grant agreement with WNET, was to “educate millions of Americans on the implications of looming debt and the tough choices ahead as these unfunded liabilities threaten to crowd out funding for education, public safety and other essential public services.” The project sought to “raise awareness of which cities and states are in the direst situations and how further crisis and/or bankruptcy might be averted, with a special focus on leaders confronting the issue head-on, proposed solutions and models of reform.”

The grant was explicitly made to further educational purposes only. As such, the agreement provides that the WNET grant “will only be used for … charitable and educational purposes and will not be used to carry on propaganda, influence legislation, fund any political campaign, influence the outcome of any election, carry on any voter registration drives, or violate any applicable local, state, federal, or foreign law.”

We believe the issue of unfunded pension liabilities is of vital importance and will continue to support organizations that seek to raise awareness of the problem and pursue long-term solutions.

About Laura and John Arnold Foundation

LJAF is a private foundation committed to producing substantial, widespread, and lasting reforms that will maximize opportunities and minimize injustice in our society. Its strategic investments are currently focused in education, criminal justice, public accountability, and research integrity. LJAF has offices in Houston and New York .

Bill and Melinda Gates, Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, as well as billionaire John Arnold as his wife, Laura, were also included on the list.

The clock’s ticking on gay marriage bans. “States rights” and “tradition” do not trump the 14th amendment, and while I know there are several on the court who feel “uncomfortable” with expansive decisions, there’s no real wiggle room here.

Grants

Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF) makes strategic investments in criminal justice, education, public accountability, and research integrity. In addition to these core areas of focus, we also identify and pursue other high-leverage opportunities through our Venture Development initiative. LJAF’s grants are aligned with our Philosophy of Philanthropy and support projects that are intended to produce sustainable and scalable solutions that result in transformational change. This page includes a listing of grant agreements executed between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013. The grant amounts listed will be paid based on the payment schedules established within the grant agreements. All payments are contingent upon a grantee’s full compliance with the terms and conditions of the grant agreement.

Pensions are on the verge of bankruptcy to this date. And what happened on October 2008? Please, look back and see how pensions went down the toilet.

Cities and states underfunding pensions for years, always promising they’ll stuff them full when the “good times” come, but when they came all that money they were going to pump into pensions instead went into new spending or tax cuts. Now the Boomer retirement wave is beginning and, lo and behold, the cupboards are bare and the people responsible are going “It’s not our fault! It’s the last guy who was here!”

Philanthropists pledge $10 million to restore 7,000 Head Start seats

The National Head Start Association said Monday the founders of the Laura and John Arnold Foundation came forward after learning about the shutdown’s effects on the federal pre-K program for children from low-income families. The money is a personal donation, however, not through the foundation, NHSA spokeswoman Sally Aman said.

OMG! They’ve gotten to Head Start!

An Apology to John Arnold | Diane Ravitch’s blog

On October 10, I posted a column about John Arnold, a billionaire who supports charter schools, TFA, and similar projects. I noted that he was giving $10 million to keep Headstart centers open during the government shutdown. In that column, I quoted investigative journalist David Sirota, who said that Arnold was trying to buy good will to divert attention from his efforts to cut the pensions of retirees (aka, pension reform).

A lawyer contacted me on behalf of Mr. Arnold and asked me to correct factual inaccuracies in that post. Arnold did not leave Enron with $3 billion. He left before the firm collapsed with $8 million, which a judge later reduced to $4 million. According to his lawyer, he made $3 billion as a hedge fund investor after he left Enron.

So, I apologize for saying that Arnold left Enron with $3 billion and that he “fleeced” Enron investors. He did not…

Heck. Moyers and Company’s corporate funder was Mutual of America! Big bad insurance corporashun!

Also…

Funding for Moyers & Company is provided by Anne Gumowitz; Carnegie Corporation of New York; Ford Foundation; The Herb Alpert Foundation, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; Park Foundation; The Kohlberg Foundation; Barbara G. Fleischman; and by our sole corporate sponsor, Mutual of America.

If you look up some of those foundations you’ll find some contributions that will also raise some eyebrows.

Last three paragraphs of Sirota’s hit piece.

Whereas PBS’s standalone series like POV openly admit that the content viewers are about to see is a subjective point of view, the “Pension Peril” series has been broadcast as a part of PBS’s allegedly objective news programming. That, along with the lack of explicit disclosure, has served to obscure the content’s financial, political and ideological links to Arnold and his pension-cutting crusade.

Strategy-wise, this technique mimics the Bush administration’s most controversial television propaganda. As the New York Times reported in 2005, the administration spent public resources to produce “prepackaged, ready-to-serve news reports” that “were subsequently broadcast on local stations across the country without any acknowledgement of the government’s role in their production.” In PBS’s current iteration of the scheme, private special-interest money is now financing prepackaged news reports. Public resources are then used to promote those reports on publicly owned stations across the country - and with little disclosure of the original funding source.

That leaves millions of unsuspecting viewers wholly unaware that the PBS “reporting” they are watching is not objective news, but instead an ideological advertisement funded by a billionaire trying to manipulate public policy.

1999 - Who’s In Charge Here? A Very Tough Question For Evans

Dwight Evans is going to have to do more than apologize for the fake and racially inflammatory Web site his deputy campaign manager apparently had a role in creating.

For Evans, who has mounted a mostly issue-driven and promising campaign until now, the challenge is no longer convincing voters that he should be the next Mayor of Philadelphia. His challenge is convincing Philadelphians he should stay in the race.

The dirty trick played on rival candidate John White was a cowardly and craven act. The fake Web site looked for all intents and purposes like the cyberspace home for White’s mayoral campaign.

The site features White’s picture, his biography and a “message from John.” It also featured, prominently, this supposed quote from White: “The black and the brown, if we unite, we’re going to control this city.”

The race-baiting quote is a bad English translation of an interview with White published in Spanish in the weekly newspaper Al Dia. What White actually told the newspaper was the standard minorities-are-disenfranchised-and-should-vote message.

Last week Evans said deputy campaign manager David Sirota knew Robert Richman, who apparently registered and paid for the fake Web site. Sirota and Richman were college dormmates and, Evans said, had talked about the Web site.

Evans has fired Sirota. Campaign manager John Fugett has taken some responsibility for this cyber slur and has resigned…

Behind the sales pitch the story is that they are working to put further distance between NBC and MSNBC. There will still be some crossover support and logistical ties but the company was getting worried about tarnishing credibility of the regular news division at NBC from fallout of the progressive advocacy from MSNBC. I think it was Columbia Journalism Review had an article on it a few weeks ago.
I doubt the “social media” experience is going to be a big hit for them. Too much competition from existing social media sites. My guess is it’ll end up being a normal comments section.

Some viewers make little distinction between the two, particularly when NBC News personalities like Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd have regular programs on MSNBC, and NBC is sometimes held culpable for MSNBC’s sins.

“If you’re going to be a news organization, I think you probably need a little more self-control than the MSNBC commentators have,” Levinson said. “I think it does reflect badly on NBC.”

Comcast’s move to separate MSNBC and NBC News, at least on a corporate level, has become more apparent within the past year. New NBC News President Deborah Turness makes it clear she has nothing to do with MSNBC. Griffin has said that a post-Olympics lineup change at MSNBC will bring greater clarity to the lineup by bunching the news-oriented shows earlier in the day before a turn toward opinion with Ronan Farrow’s new show starting at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Mia Farrow is under-appreciated as an actress. She worked too often under Allen’s directorship, and that may have hurt her chances in getting other parts. Reading those articles about her, I could tell that she’s probably a really great mom, who made a really bad choice (in terms of her personal life) in associating with Woody Allen.

Terry-Thomas

Final years and death: 1983-90

By 1983, with his medical bills at £40,000 a year, Terry-Thomas’s financial resources were dwindling. He and his wife sold their dream house and moved into the small cottage once owned by his former wife Pat Patlanski,[221] which she left to him in her will on her death in June that year.[222] Shortly afterwards he worked with ghostwriter Terry Daum on an autobiography, Terry-Thomas Tells Tales.[223] Although the first draft was completed by late summer 1984,[224] Terry-Thomas refused to release the script and continued to make alterations, but never completed his copyediting: the book was finally published after his death.[225]

By 1984 Terry-Thomas was increasingly depressed by his condition and when he was interviewed that year, he admitted that “one doctor said I’ve got about four more years to live. God forbid! I shall probably blow my brains out first”.[226] In 1987 the couple could no longer afford to live in Spain, so they moved back to London. They lived in a series of rented properties before ending up in a three-room, unfurnished charity flat, where they lived with financial assistance from the Actors’ Benevolent Fund.[227][228] Richard Briers was one of his first visitors at the flat, and was shocked by the change he saw: “[S]itting there, motionless, he was just a mere shadow. A crippled, crushed, shadow. It was really bloody awful.”[227]

On 9 April 1989 the actor Jack Douglas and Richard Hope-Hawkins organised a benefit concert for Terry-Thomas, after discovering he was living in virtual obscurity, poverty and ill health.[229] The gala, held at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, ran for five hours, and featured 120 artists with Phil Collins topping the bill and Michael Caine as the gala chairman. The show raised over £75,000 for Terry-Thomas and Parkinson’s UK.[230] The funds from the charity concert allowed Terry-Thomas to move out of his charity flat and into Busbridge Hall nursing home in Godalming, Surrey.[230] He died there on 8 January 1990, at the age of 78. The funeral service was held at St. John the Baptist Church, Busbridge, where the theme from Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines was played; he was cremated at Guildford Crematorium.[

I read that, too. Allen sounds a bit like a cult leader: he can persuade others that his version of the truth is the only correct one, and anyone who disagrees is immoral and an enemy.

I admired his stand-up comedy and his early films, but as he got too full of himself, I lost interest in his work, and that was well before I heard about him and Dylan Farrow.

The merger would need FCC and DoJ approval and it might not get it. The AT&T/T-Mobile and DirecTV/Dish mergers were both shot down in recent years, so this one might be blocked as well. The wildcard, though, is the fact that Comcast and Time Warner do not in the main compete. There are only two metropolitan markets with more than one cable company (Chicago is one of them, New York City is the other).

One report I read said DOJ might pass on this but the FCC will be involved. If it’s a stock buy then no doubt the SEC will be involved.

Raggare

Raggare is a subculture found mostly in Sweden and parts of Norway,[1][2] Denmark, Germany and Austria. Raggare are related to the greaser subculture and are known for their love of hot rod cars and 1950s American pop culture.

While the raggare movement has its roots in late 1950s youth counterculture, today it is associated mainly with middle aged men who enjoy meeting and showing off their retro American cars. However, the subculture retains its rural and small town roots as well as its blue collar and low brow feel. The original phenomenon unleashed moral panic but the contemporary raggare subculture tends to be met with amusement or mild disapproval by mainstream society. However, there has been an increase of younger raggare lately, possibly due to a growing interest in the 1950s and 1960s culture.

Haha, we’re getting more snow this am.

230 lawhawk  Thu, Feb 13, 2014 4:50:47am

Greets and saluts from the snowy NYC metro area. The snow is falling at a rather steady clip at the moment here, but the radar’s showing the heaviest bands are still just off to our South. Woo.

At least the snow is the light fluffy variety here so far. Hope that lasts.

Take mass transit they say if you have to go into work. I’m working from home. I simply don’t trust NJ Transit, which claims to be operating on a regular schedule for this storm, after going to a limited one the past several, even though this one is expected to bring more snow than the others. I’m fully expecting NJT to realize about midday that they’re screwed and that they’ll suddenly cut the schedule and limit trains, stranding people (including the Mrs. who has to go into work because her employer is well, [deleted]).

The visibilities are dropping, and the winds are starting to pick up. Not as big a problem here in northern NJ, but will be a significant problem across NYC and onto Long Island and the Jersey Shore (plus the added bonus of coastal flooding).

Radar is indicating that the rain/snow line is about Toms River (about 60 miles south of NYC). Between now and then? Heavy snow falling at rates of 1-3 inches per hour.

Airports have tons of cancellations (not just the NYC metro, but those still affected down south with the ripple effect).

Yeah, it could real bad.

What’s funnier is that they’re stretching the definition of “teenager” to justify their own statistics. When I think a teen working for minimum wage, I picture the 16 yr old working behind the counter for spending money. I don’t picture a 24 yr old trying to put himself through college or raise a family as a teenager.

Morning…

Well, a cruse through this thread from last evening shows David Sirota is questionable at best…American culture invades Europe in a rather strange way…Comcast may become my cable provider (don’t know what to think about that)…football players are big tough guys but are scared of a gay man that can probably kick some of their asses, which shows who really has the problems…and the south is under attack by a northern-like storm.

Check.

Okay, how are the east coasters doing this morning - those from Georgia all the way up to Bos-Wash? Power on or out? Hope everyone is safe and warm, though warm might be a bit of a problem if the power is out.

We saw some melting conditions in central Ohio yesterday with temps finally getting a bit over freezing with some nice warm sun. More of that today and then a bit of a backslide over the weekend. But the long range is looking good…40’s and 50s all next week! Oh, I hope so…

Forecast for this area…caps are theirs, not mine.

* HAZARDS…A MIX OF HEAVY SNOW…SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN.

* TIMING…SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL BE THE MAIN PRECIPITATION
TYPES THROUGH DAYBREAK. THEN A FINAL ROUND OF HEAVY SHOW IS
EXPECTED FROM DAYBREAK INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON.

* ACCUMULATIONS…ADDITIONAL SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATION OF 2 TO 4
INCHES…EXCEPT 4 TO 6 INCHES IN THE STATESVILLE TO THE TRIAD
AREAS. ALSO…A TRACE TO TWO TENTHS OF AN INCH OF ADDITIONAL ICE
ACCUMULATION THROUGH DAYBREAK.

* IMPACTS…THE HEAVY SNOW…SLEET AND PERIODIC FREEZING RAIN
WILL MAKE TRAVEL TREACHEROUS…IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. THE
ACCUMULATIONS WILL LIKELY CREATE POWER OUTAGES.

* TEMPERATURES…MAINLY IN THE MID 20S…WARMING INTO THE LOWER TO
MID 30S IN THE AFTERNOON.

* WINDS…NORTH 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 MPH.

* VISIBILITY…ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES POSSIBLE IN
HEAVY SNOW.

This is some 10th Amendment bullshit propagated by the “sovereigns” and “posse comitatus” types who think that sheriffs have the ultimate power in the US. Typical of their nonsense.

They reason that sheriffs are the only elected law enforcement officers, so that means they are especially anointed by the public. This idea ignores the very true situation that sheriffs are often the least capable law enforcement officers.

Yeah, that’s why I just shake my head when they think that putting all the authority in the hands of “elected” sheriffs is a great idea, because surely a sheriff would never abuse the powers of his office to “convince” voters to support his reelection.

Good morning Lizards (snowbound and not snowbound)

Official report of snow in Philly is 8.8” (CNN). Here in Center City when walking into work it was about 3” with a 1/4” of sleet on top. Sleet was falling at the time as well.

Since then the wind has picked up further and it looks like all snow - blowing sideways. Roads are partially plowed and sidewalks partially cleared, though the sleet is making even cleared spots a little treacherous to walk on.

Most of the workforce here stayed home and is working remotely. About eight people total on the entire floor. No line to get to the coffee machine!

But it’s the light fluffy stuff at least here.

NYC public schools are open, but it sounds like most parents kept the kids home. The mid-morning presser is going to be interesting. Roads are a mess here, and the more cars on the road, the tougher it will be to get them cleared.

Made sure some months ago that the kiddo had fleece lined boots, hat and good heavy coat for this stuff. Sort of figured we’d have a nasty winter this past fall. Normally, I don’t need much more than a hoodie in the winter time here, so really not prepared to go outside.

There are always plastic trash bags, heheheh. If you could get and around, you’d probably see plenty of kids using garbage can lids and other items as sleds since a sled could be stored for almost your entire childhood and never be used.

If this is a result of climate change, this extreme weather we’re having in the south, we may have to start getting prepared for more of this.

Vandergrift is a town on a tributary (the KIskiminetas*) of the Allegheny River. About thirty miles upstream from Pittsburgh.

* - The Kiski is the drainage for a whole lot of southwestern PA. Large creeks (Loyalhanna) and some other rivers (Conemaugh) all combine to form it. Pretty heavily contaminated already from AMD (Acid Mine Drainage), but it doesn’t need oil poured in on top of that.

Loved Dale’s video / op-ed!

You said Austin is ‘the exception’ in Texas? Well, no. Dallas is blue and has been since 2006. Houston has been (barely) blue in since 2008. El Paso has been blue a long time, along with San Antonio. And most of the border counties are blue.

Texas is extremely gerrymandered. The representation in Congress is therefore skewed. The state overall still votes red, but we have the 2nd lowest voter turnout of all states. That’s our biggest problem — getting potential Democrats out to vote. And, as is true in the overall US, demographics are in our favor. That alone will turn the state blue by 2024, statistically.

Yes, exactly, or for the simple notion of how would they all fit? Basically the argument is that the movie is so fantastical as to encourage the audience to say “of course its not meant literally”. Because obviously there is nothing in the actual old testament or new testament that might elicit the same response.///

Goes back to Ham’s version of the Gish Gallop during the debate, where he twisted evolutionary theory into a pretzel to argue that the various and sundry species all came from “similar” creatures. Arrest order issued for Venezuelan opposition leader

A court has issued an arrest order for Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez for his alleged role in deadly violence that erupted after a march in Caracas, the daily El Universal reported Thursday.

At the request of the Attorney General’s Office, a Caracas judge on Wednesday night ordered the Sebin intelligence agency to apprehend Lopez and search his residence, the paper reported, citing judicial sources.

Lopez was ordered arrested on raft of charges that include criminal conspiracy, homicide and terrorism, the daily said.

But a source with the Voluntad Popular (Popular Will) party, which Lopez leads, told Efe that it had not been formally notified of the warrant and said Lopez was meeting with his attorneys and “evaluating his situation.”

Ah, so Noah got 2 bears, and they all….er, evolved into polar bears, grizzly bears, pandas, sloth bears, etc.

So Ham is stuck between an idiotic claim that Noah fit 300,000 species of beetles on the ark, and between accepting evolution on some level. I hope it keeps him awake at night.

The “kinds” thing is the apologists attempt to get around the fact that getting two of *every* species of current animal onto the Ark would be a logistic nightmare (if not impossibility) in terms of both collection and then care and feeding during the journey.

So Noah just collected two of each “kind” and these upon release on Ararat spread back out over the world and sort of micro-evolved into all the species extant in the world today. If you dig you can find all sorts of pseudo-science on how this happened and how the various current species fit into this or that kind. Fun is looking up the Tasmanian Wolf, if they address it at all. ;)

Jennifer Connelly plays Noah’s wife. If God told me I had to build a boat and I would then get to spend 40 days and 40 nights with Jennifer Connelly in that boat, I’d jump right to it.

Fun is looking up the Tasmanian Wolf, if they address it at all. ;)

Summary: It’s gibberish.

When I asked once if it was really believed that Nebuchadnezzar actually lived to be over 900 yrs old, I was told, “Of course you’re supposed to believe it, even if it is a metaphor.”

Just cleared snow in front of house. 6 inches easy. At top of the intake on the snowblower. And by the time I finished, it was already covering the spots I started first. Low visibility here. Snow plows have come through on the main street nearby, but we’re untouched.

I don’t think we’re going to see a changeover. And the snow keeps on coming.

At least the winds aren’t too bad here.

After this phone call I have to take, I’m gonna do likewise. I’m not sure about my blower, as it really struggles with the wet heavy crap.

South Jersey/Philly is looking at 8 inches, maybe? And like you said: it’s still coming.

That’s my part of my point too. National identity is an invented construct. It’s a modern construct too. Nationalism as we know it has its origins in the Napoelonic wars and revolutions of 1848. It’s why fascism and ultra right wing nationalism differs from traditional right views of God and King.

Just thinking aloud, I’d be more impressed with the Noah’s Ark story if the ark had managed to come to rest somewhere other than Ararat. I mean, Ararat is high by middle eastern standards, but there are hundreds, if not thousands, of peaks in the Andes and Himalayas that are taller. If the Bible told me that the Ark came to rest on, say, Huascaran and not some mountain that, conveniently, would have been known to ancient scribes in Mesopotamia, then I’d be more inclined to believe it.

And the mass transit delays are starting to pile up too. LIRR is a mess, plus there’s a track fire in and out of NY Penn. LIRR has a 3d rail, so with the snow totals, it could affect service in those areas. Overhead lines could be affected by the wind. It’s a mess out there.

Can someone explain what this hair-splitting gibberish means? I presume it’s an attempt at a rebuttal for people like me who laugh at the idea that Noah went to the arctic to get polar bears, the Andes to get Llamas, and Australia to get koalas and brought them all back to Mesopotamia.

Easy…

Book: What are we up to, sweetheart?
River Tam: Fixing your Bible.
Book: I, um… [alarmed] What?
River: Bible’s broken. Contradictions, false logistics - doesn’t make sense. [she’s marked up the bible, crossed out passages and torn out pages]
Book: No, no. You-you-you can’t…
River: So we’ll integrate non-progressional evolution theory with God’s creation of Eden. Eleven inherent metaphoric parallels already there. Eleven. Important number. Prime number. One goes into the house of eleven eleven times, but always comes out one. [pause] Noah’s ark is a problem.
Book: Really?
River: We’ll have to call it early quantum state phenomenon. Only way to fit 5000 species of mammal on the same boat. [rips out page]

Fixed!

Well those Eastern European countries aren’t really libertarian per say. Libertarianism encompasses more than just things like taxation, spending, etc but also social policy. I’m willing to bet you those two Eastern European countries have restrictive laws on abortion, do not have decriminalized drugs, or SSM. The problem though with libertarianism and Randian objectivism is really the same with any extreme ideology, it’s that its proponents refuse to look at the real world. Not sure if you were here yesterday for the discussion on the Mises Institute but their big thing is rejecting data in favor of theoretical principles. In that way, the ultra free marketer is the same as the ultra Marxist.

PATCO (Philly’s PATH equivalent, for those not familiar) had two separate motor fires on the Ben Franklin Bridge Monday, one of which was chalked up to snow, I think.

The system has really gone down hill the last few years. This weather doesn’t help. I know that SEPTA used light little fires on the track switching mechanisms for the regional rails, to keep them from freezing.

(Actually that’s an echo of the sovereign citizen bullshit that is festering from the county north of here.)

It’s more ‘Sovereign Citizen’ than neo-Confederate, given that the actual Confederacy did not accept such a principal.

County sheriffs ultimately hold positions the state government has established. If a state wanted to, it could disband all sheriff’s departments and fold them into the state police. I actually think that might be a good idea in some states, as a way to regularize training, provide more specialist personnel, and keep local bigots from thumbing their noses at the law.

He insisted his message was ‘anti-Zionist’, claiming Israelis were ‘just a bunch of Polish / Ethiopian immigrants roughly 70 years old’.

He told his 5,000 Twitter followers: ‘Disney decided I am no longer the official voice of DonaldDuck in it’s middle-east dubbed cartoons because of an anti Zionism tweet. Proud!’

What it also showed was St. Reagan octupling the debt from Carter (.24 billion to $1.8 billion) and Bush tripling the debt over Clinton from $1.8 to $5.4 billion). Obama’s tally is higher, but only by degree.

From the article:

Some conservative policy experts question the need for a fix to the Voting Rights Act. Israel Ortega, Strategic Initiatives Manager for the Heritage Foundation, believes people are wary of giving more power to the federal government. He said that a new version of the act could be politicized, and that a better approach to the problem of minority turnout would be to focus on civic engagement.

“Sometimes we pass law after law, hoping things will turn out better, but I don’t see the need for this one right now,” he said. “A better thing to do would be to empower people to come out to vote, not to empower the federal government and the Department of Justice,” Ortega said.

Yep. We don’t need to put anything back into the VRA. Just empower people to vote by closing polling places, add more voter ID requirements, and reducing weekend voting hours.

And the best way to improve civic engagement is to destroy ACORN and demonize anyone and any group that attempts to do social organization.

Heritage also had another image this morning, showing the debt for different presidencies, trying to make Obama’s figure look bad.

What it also showed was St. Reagan octupling the debt from Carter (.24 billion to $1.8 billion) and Bush tripling the debt over Clinton from $1.8 to $5.4 billion). Obama’s tally is higher, but only by degree.

Not exactly a show of fiscal restraint by conservatives.

Oh come on, we all know Tip O’Neill tricked Reagan using his wily Irish charm and that Bush wasn’t a true conservative and the debts accumlated were all the fault of the Dem Congress the last two years of his presidency and not all of the Republican controlled Congress the first 3/4’s.

I love how they want to ignore that their party pandered to the old dixiecrats. The other thing is those old dixiecrats were conservative as they came. It wasn’t just race. They hated unions, they hated the New Deal, etc. They just refused to join the Republican Party because they still hated the Republican party because of the Civil War. When the Republicans ceased wearing the party of Lincoln label proudly in certain areas of the country, it became more acceptable for CSA fanatics to join up.

Number 5. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Really, that’s why I don’t buy this “It’s generational.” A lot of the Republicans biggest kooks aren’t old guys. They’re fairly young. Rand Paul isn’t 50 yet, Cruz is in his early 40’s, and Coochie for cocoa puffs is too. The fact of the matter is guys like Jerry Ford, Barry Goldwater, and even Ricahrd Nixon were more socially progressive than many modern GOPers.

Across all those years, as scandals from Tailhook to Aberdeen to Lackland have erupted, one obvious fact must have been evident to, and ignored by, anybody who cared: There are nearly six times as many men than women serving in uniform today, and, ergo, the history of the American armed services is littered with untold thousands of male survivors of sexual attacks. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at least, has had illuminating data about the problem for more than a decade: in 2003 alone, more than 30,000 of its male outpatients answered in the affirmative when asked if they had suffered what the VHA terms “military sexual trauma” (MST). By 2010, the number had grown to nearly 50,000—almost equal to the number of women who said they had suffered MST.

We’re going to rape you every day, and we’re gonna put a bullet in your head,’” she recounted. “When he reported this to his commander, his commander said, ‘It’s your own fault. I’m not going to do anything.’ When I heard that story, I could imagine my skinny young boys, if they joined the military, perhaps being targeted, because they’re too skinny, too young, whatever it happens to be. So, he doesn’t have to run around collecting them and can instead cut down a good sized stand of trees to make the ark with his sons.

Wealthy planters who owned 20 or more slaves were exempt from serving in the Confederate army.

Wealthy Northerners who could pay a $300 fee were exempt from serving in the Union army.

Although an average slave cost much more than $300.

Yeah, I wanted to add on that if by “car”, you mean “Rolls-Royce”.

I really wish I had some of my historical research for an article I helped out on but the problem really isn’t that the Founders owned slaves. It’s how Jefferson would write elegantly about slavery being an evil and then would refuse to free them despite pleas by fellow founders who actually believed in the principle. I don’t hate Jefferson by the way but we have every right to criticize his double speak and actions on the practice of slavery especially given that his contemparies did.

So the dimensions of the Ark would be (more or less): 300 cubits long (137.16 m, 450 ft), 50 cubits wide (22.86 m, 75 ft), and 30 cubits high (13.716 m, 45 ft).

Yep……you’re gonna need a bigger boat.

507 FemNaziBitch  Thu, Feb 13, 2014 8:37:15am
If Taranto is concerned about the treatment of men in such cases, he could have written about male sexual assault victims, who are a smaller but nevertheless important portion of victims. But when men are sexually assaulted the perpetrator is usually also male; in fact, 98 percent of all perpetrators are male. The “double standard” Taranto is worried about, in which men are more often the accused, isn’t a double standard at all — it’s just reality.

There is actually a Talmudic opinion that G-D teleported all the animals to Noah because it would have been impossible for Noah to have collected them all in the time allotted even if it was several hundred years.

That seems like a lot of trouble. If he could do that, why not just levitate them, along the the Noah family, and skip the ark?

Well, the anarchists, I mean libertarians, share the Marxist belief on how a capitalist society works: that capitalism will seek profits and power over all other considerations.

Sarcasm aside, the culture of slave-holding depended on white non-slaveholders not identifying with slaves. The South’s plantation economy might have used a lot of slave labor, but it also required other forms of cheap labor from free people: seasonal labor and other forms of part-time labor. It also required a whole tier of “overseers” who did not own slaves, but would manage them and deal out punishment.

And of course, the antebellum South was a police state in which being suspected of abolitionist sympathies could get you detained, your mail opened, or just plain beaten to death. All with no due process.

All of things carries through to the development (and enforcement) of a culture of nested entitlement: you could be at the bottom-rung of the economics and social ladder, and still be proud that you weren’t black, Not really that different from what drives racism these days.

So yes, temporarily embarrassed plantation owners.

heh…

Someone thought their Corvette was snow-ready — and had to be towed off #VA beltway

Look at those tires. Freaking wide low profile and most likely a sport type tread. Freaking people need to learn about their cars and what they are equipped with before driving.

I remember riding with a woman once that had a nice Audi. It was a snowy cold day and the windows were all steamed up and she started to bitch about ” this damn car…the windows always steam up and I can’t see out and for what this cost me, I ought to take it back…blah, blah, blah!” I said, do you mind? “No, what are going to do?” I looked at her controls, slide the rotating switch to the little upper windows icon, turned the fan up, added a tad bit of heat on the temperature control and hit the air conditioner. 30 seconds…window all clear!

“How’d you know to do that???”

I read the manual.

People! And I admit, I drive VWs…so the controls are similar being members of the same family…but I do read the manuals. People would be amazed at all the cools things cars do these days.

Or don’t do!

Mini vice-grip worked great. My last TV basically collapsed in the plastic case after it made a final gasp like a steam train. Light smoke. Was barely watching it since I was using the rabbit ears. Might have been around 2003. Last time I had cable was in 1995. Lots of channels. Lots of garbage. Not watching TV is also good for the environment since it lowers the carbon footprint. ;)

Kansas House passes bill allowing refusal of service to same-sex couples

House Bill 2453 explicitly protects religious individuals, groups and businesses that refuse services to same-sex couples, particularly those looking to tie the knot.

At least Idaho’s senior Republicans had the good sense to kick it back to committee were it will hopefully die.

House ships religious freedom bill back to panel

They then inevitably talk about not wanting preferential treatment but just a “level playing field”, when the *whole point* of affirmative action is precisely to provide that level playing field.

Rand Paul accused of plagiarizing lawsuit against the NSA

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) has been caught once again using other people’s written work without attribution, this time in a lawsuit against the NSA that he jointly filed with Virginia’s ex-Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli.

According to the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank, the suit alleges that the National Security Agency’s domestic phone surveillance program is unconstitutional, but that neither Cuccinelli nor Paul did the bulk of the legal work on the suit. The majority of the suit’s verbiage was lifted verbatim from the work of former Reagan administration attorney Bruce Fein.

I see this stuff is just wonder about the law suit that is going to happen when two straight guys go into a place just because their friends and get refused service. Does the owner need to ask the people if they’re gay before refusing service? Or just think they look that way?

And how about two women?
