Yet Another Highly Misleading GCHQ/NSA Article From the Intercept

Here we go again. Another hyperbolic fear-mongering headline that is not supported by the actual article: Snowden Documents Reveal Covert Surveillance and Pressure Tactics Aimed at WikiLeaks and Its Supporters. It’s an ongoing pattern of seemingly deliberate misrepresentations.

The premise of this latest breaking news bombshell by Glenn Greenwald and Ryan Gallagher is that GCHQ has been “spying” on people who visit the Wikileaks website, by collecting statistics with the open source Piwik analytics program. But if you read down to paragraph 20, you discover:

It is unclear from the PowerPoint presentation whether GCHQ monitored the WikiLeaks site as part of a pilot program designed to demonstrate its capability, using only a small set of covertly collected data, or whether the agency continues to actively deploy its surveillance system to monitor visitors to WikiLeaks.

That’s right — they do not know from these stolen documents whether this program was ever actually deployed in the real world. Yet the entire rest of the article does its best to give you the impression that it was, with subheadings like “GCHQ Spies on WikiLeaks Visitors.” Once again, this Greenwald piece deceptively conflates the ability to do something with actually doing it.

But even more than that, the article contains these drastically incorrect technical statements about IP addresses…

The IP addresses collected by GCHQ are used to identify individual computers that connect to the Internet, and can be traced back to specific people if the IP address has not been masked using an anonymity service.

Wow. Folks, these claims are simply wrong in every sense.

First, Internet Protocol addresses do not “identify individual computers that connect to the Internet.” An IP address is a unique number assigned to an Internet connection, not to the device using that connection. I have seven devices connected to the same IP address in my office.

Second, IP addresses cannot be “traced back to specific people.” That’s nonsense. An IP address can be part of a proxy system, for example, in which case there could be hundreds or thousands of people using the same address. Or it could be dynamic, in which case it could be different every time a person connects to the Internet. There is simply no way to get an individual’s identity using only an IP address, as this article claims, whether not it is “masked.”

The only way an IP address can be traced to an individual account holder is by going to the ISP with a court order to get their records. And note that even doing this will not determine for certain whether the account holder was actually the one using that IP address. By itself, an IP address is useless for identifying individual people.

When I tried to point out these things to one of the authors of the piece this morning on Twitter, here’s the response:

That answer is completely non-responsive; to be honest it seems like deliberate BS. Whether the IP is dynamic or static has absolutely nothing to do with whether it identifies an individual computer; it doesn’t. Again, an IP address identifies a connection, not a device. Gallagher seems highly confused about this distinction.

But if you read the article, that is not what it says. The part I quoted above says very clearly that the IP can be traced to individuals, not that it can be used in conjunction with other information.

Why wasn’t this made clear in the article? Draw your own conclusions; to me, it looks like a deliberate attempt to sow fear with misleading claims.

One more tweet, from Micah Lee, The Intercept’s technologist:

Yes, that’s right — he’s actually comparing an IP address to a driver’s license or a photo of a face. And the thing is, he’s got to be technically aware enough to know that this is simply not even close to being a reasonable comparison. When I pointed this out, here’s how he answered:

When they can’t even get the basic technology and terminology correct, how should anyone take what they report to be factually accurate?

IP addresses aren’t drivers licenses. They’re far closer to being a street intersection than an individual’s driver’s license.

It points to a location, but not the person behind it. VPN and other masking of IP addresses is meant to obfuscate and protect the address. Getting to the address gives you some information, but not all.

I have an IP address, but it doesn’t get you all the way to who is actually in control of the device on which I’m connected to the Internet. That’s the extra step that the “technologist” wants to ignore.

1) MAC addresses, not IP addresses would allow you to ID a specific device with at least a degree of accuracy and even then, a MAC address can be spoofed.

2) You might be able to ID the device used, but you could not directly relate that to the person using that device, especially if they device was accessible to multiple users in a non-secured environment.

Having been a Fortune 500 IT guy for almost 20 years, you are correct, Charles. You do not own your IP address, it can change at a moments’ notice, and the fact that you owned it 20 minutes ago doesn’t mean jack shit. It is not your personal IP address. You could be sharing it with your whole neighborhood, or company. And there are only 4294967296 of them and they have all been allocated (I believe some of the last blocks were allocated not too long ago).

MAC addresses, not IP addresses would allow you to ID a specific device with at least a degree of accuracy and even then, a MAC address can be spoofed

I have over 2,000 computers that don’t even really exist, who all have a computer-generated MAC address. I can change their MACs anytime I want.

Sorry for my absence. Basically, that knock to the head I took has had longer-lasting repurcussions, and at the moment we’re not exactly sure why. The good news is my intracranial pressure is fine. The bad news is I’m getting cluster migraines that are making it a challenge to get through a lot of days. My sense of time is also screwed up right now; I seriously meant to post this like a week ago. I’m also super-depressed, which may be a physical side effect of the whack to the head or it might, y’know, be because of all the pain and stuff. Either way, it makes it weirdly harder to talk to friends than to strangers. The good output of that is I’m still able to get along in my schoolwork well enough.

Anyway. No promises on how much I’ll be around. Wish I could say I’m just okay, but it’s not the case, but nobody thinks I’m in any immediate danger of croaking, but nobody really knows why I’m getting constant headaches, either. We’ll see.

Oh and another piece of good news—my school-provided ACA-compliant insurance isn’t fighting any of the bills even though this was from something that happened out of state. Thanks Obama, I think.

Oh, one more clarification — a VPN is thing, not really an industry. There are lots of network companies, ISP’s, and wireless providers who provide VPN’s as part of their bundles of services or packages but the “VPN Industry” is really a term used more by pirate party people, anon, and others than companies who actually provide networks.

Yea, and things are going virtual FAST. We will probably be mostly using a combination of little phone-like devices and big compute cycles in a cloud, at least until someone comes up with a way to screw the competition over by reversing the centralization of IT (which, I expect to happen).

But, any juncture at which someone could have made a firm machine/person/number connection, well those junctures are all years in the past. Nobody could ever promise IP/MAC address consistency back then, and surely not now.

Yea, and things are going virtual FAST. We will probably be mostly using a combination of little phone-like devices and big compute cycles in a cloud, at least until someone comes up with a way to screw the competition over by reversing the centralization of IT (which, I expect to happen).

But, any juncture at which someone could have made a firm machine/person/number connection, well those junctures are all years in the past. Nobody could ever promise IP/MAC address consistency back then, and surely not now.

The only way an IP address can be traced to an individual account holder is by going to the ISP with a court order to get their records. And note that even doing this will not determine for certain whether the account holder was actually the one using that IP address. By itself, an IP address is useless for identifying individual people.

That isn’t entirely true. In cases where there is a static IP leased via an internet service provider, the name of the user of that address is entered into the Whois information, even if there is no domain name registered. I found this out the hard way a while back when I had a static IP address for ADSL service via my local telco. Doing a reverse lookup on the IP address assigned to me gave all of my contact info (including name, address and telephone #). Needless to say, I wasn’t particularly happy about this, but was told that it was standard procedure.

Laws may have changed since then, which I hope is truly the case especially when ipv6 gets a full rollout, because all of those addresses are going to be statically allocated.

The owner of the static public routable IP address is published. However, you’ve probably got one static public address but way more than one network interface (usually there’s one or two per device) in your network. You’re actually running a private network that could have multiple people using it that looks like one interface to the outside world through Network Address Translation (NAT). The mapping between public addresses and internal private addresses (that you may have dozens of) is dynamic, only kept on your own router, and often not logged for any length of time.

Large organizations run private networks with NAT as well, so you could have hundreds or thousands of devices sharing a handful of public IP addresses.

Most people use a proxy service to mask their identity from a WHOIS lookup for this reason.

The relationships and conflicts of interest are even more tangled than they used to be now that Snowden has joined the board as well. You have a fugitive on the board of an organization with the reporters who cover him the most, and that org funnels donations to another organization (which those reporters also cover heavily), and that second organization then expends its resources on assisting that very same fugitive board member.

Today, Thursday 1st August at 15:50 MSK, Edward Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia. He left Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow with WikiLeaks staffer and legal advisor Sarah Harrison who has accompanied him during his 39 day stay in the transit zone and continues to do so. Ms Harrison has remained with Mr Snowden at all times to protect his safety and security, including during his exit from Hong Kong. They departed from the airport together in a taxi and are headed to a secure, confidential place.

On 16th July Mr Snowden made a request for temporary asylum to Russia. Despite the ongoing pressure from the United States, which has been trying to interfere with this sovereign process in violation of the UN Protocol on the Rights of Refugees, Russia has done the right thing and granted Mr Snowden temporary asylum. The certificate of temporary asylum by the Russian Federation lasts for one year and affords Mr Snowden the right to live in and travel around Russia, where he can now plan his next steps in safety. On receiving his asylum certificate Mr Snowden said: “Over the past eight weeks we have seen the Obama administration show no respect for international or domestic law, but in the end the law is winning. I thank the Russian Federation for granting me asylum in accordance with its laws and international obligations.”

WikiLeaks, whilst being a publishing organisation, also fights for the rights and protections of journalistic sources, and so has taken a leading role in assisting Mr Snowden secure his safety. Mr Snowden, an American citizen, was forced to flee his country to enable him to safely reveal to the public the crimes of his government. President Barack Obama while elected on a platform promising to protect whistleblowers, has now prosecuted more national security whistleblowers than all other presidents in United States history combined. This bellicose response from the US administration makes it clear that Snowden could not receive a fair trial. Assange said “This is another victory in the fight against Obama’s war on whistleblowers. This battle has been won, but the war continues. The United States can no longer continue the surveillance of world citizens and its digital colonization of sovereign nations. The public will no longer stand for it. Whistleblowers will continue to appear until the government abides by its own laws and rhetoric.”

WikiLeaks commends Russia for accepting Snowden’s request and supporting him when many countries felt so compromised by US threats that they could not. Throughout Snowden’s stay in the airport it has been heartening to see citizens of the United States, of Russia and the world supporting Mr Snowden. WikiLeaks would also like to extend their gratitude to the airport staff who have assisted in making the extended stay of Mr Snowden and Ms Harrison as comfortable and secure as possible, despite the difficult conditions.

Mr Snowden and Ms Harrison have been staying in the airport for almost six weeks, having landed on an Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong on the 23rd June. They had been booked on a connecting flight the following day. Mr Snowden intended to request asylum in Latin America. However, after Mr Snowden’s departure was made public, the United States government canceled his passport, which rendered onward travel impossible.

From within the transit zone of the airport, Mr Snowden and Ms Harrison spent a number of weeks prior to his Russian application assessing the options available to him to ensure his future safety. Without a passport and no immediate offers of the necessary safe passage, travel was impossible.

1) Probably more of a rhetorical question, but why does no one in the media pick up on the fact that Greenwald habitually buries stuff 20 paragraphs in that undercut the thesis of his own articles?

2) In addition to effing up the definition of an IP address, isn’t Greenwald the tech genius who said he was protecting his material with a 4 million character encryption, or something stupid like that?

Part of me really does want to see the value in what Greenwald and Snowden are purporting to do, but all it ever does is portray them as bumbling paranoid egomaniacs.

That isn’t entirely true. In cases where there is a static IP leased via an internet service provider, the name of the user of that address is entered into the Whois information, even if there is no domain name registered. I found this out the hard way a while back when I had a static IP address for ADSL service via my local telco. Doing a reverse lookup on the IP address assigned to me gave all of my contact info (including name, address and telephone #). Needless to say, I wasn’t particularly happy about this, but was told that it was standard procedure.

Laws may have changed since then, which I hope is truly the case especially when ipv6 gets a full rollout, because all of those addresses are going to be statically allocated.

By the way, I used to have DSL here in LA years ago, and this was definitely not the practice then, even though I did have a static IP. A Whois lookup showed the owner as the ISP.

I think this is something rather unique to your provider at the time. I’ve done tons of whois lookups over the years and I’ve never seen an individual’s private info unless it was connected to a website and they didn’t use a proxy service. But never for someone just using a DSL connection.

Yep.

This is one of the reasons the Syrian Civil War is in Russia’s interests. There was a proposed natural gas pipeline from Qatar across the KSA, up into Syria, then Turkey, and finally across to Europe.

Had this happened, it would have effectively ended Russia’s monopoly on natural gas to Europe, and put Russia in a really bad economic situation.

I really don’t like talking about medical stuff.

Sorry for my absence. Basically, that knock to the head I took has had longer-lasting repurcussions, and at the moment we’re not exactly sure why. The good news is my intracranial pressure is fine. The bad news is I’m getting cluster migraines that are making it a challenge to get through a lot of days. My sense of time is also screwed up right now; I seriously meant to post this like a week ago. I’m also super-depressed, which may be a physical side effect of the whack to the head or it might, y’know, be because of all the pain and stuff. Either way, it makes it weirdly harder to talk to friends than to strangers. The good output of that is I’m still able to get along in my schoolwork well enough.

Anyway. No promises on how much I’ll be around. Wish I could say I’m just okay, but it’s not the case, but nobody thinks I’m in any immediate danger of croaking, but nobody really knows why I’m getting constant headaches, either. We’ll see.

Oh and another piece of good news—my school-provided ACA-compliant insurance isn’t fighting any of the bills even though this was from something that happened out of state. Thanks Obama, I think.

By the way, I used to have DSL here in LA years ago, and this was definitely not the practice then, even though I did have a static IP. A Whois lookup showed the owner as the ISP.

I think this is something rather unique to your provider at the time. I’ve done tons of whois lookups over the years and I’ve never seen an individual’s private info unless it was connected to a website and they didn’t use a proxy service. But never for someone just using a DSL connection.

A leased static public IP would require registration with a name phone, etc. If it was just an IP in the carrier’s subnet that they had NAT’ed to rest of world it’s one thing, if it’s a full internet routable public IP, that’s another thing.

trying to remember the last time i wrote a personal letter to someone on a piece of paper and sent it through the mail…

Year before last I got into fountain & dip pens and it was quite the experience—no undo or no cut & paste, you actually have to slow down and think about what you want to write. Very different from even ballpoint pens… you become hyper-aware of the paper quality & texture and the ink’s properties (they’re all a bit different).

Then with the flex nibs you have to not only just write carefully, but control how much pressure you’re putting on the nib and how you move your arm to change the thickness of the line. With the dip pens it’s even more nit-picky because you have to keep re-dipping. It’s so different, so much more… I dunno, personal, demanding (of one’s time & attention). The results can be fantastic though—the lines have such a unique character.

I was thinking about all that earlier today when I was working on my most recent page (shameless plug) and looking at scan of the U.S. Constitution. The penmanship was just incredible.

My mom had beautiful penmanship. I remember her telling me that in elementary school (which would’ve been in the ’40s) the teachers used to balance a coin on the kids’ hands and they had to write slwoly & carefully enough that it wouldn’t fall off (otherwise they got whacked with a ruler).

Forefinger and thumb on topside of pen, about 2 inches from tip, for control, forming a “v”, and bottom of pen rests on middle finger supported by 2 remaining fingers below it. And no, I don’t “curve” my hand over the top of my writing because I’m left handed. : )

Yes, it is finally finished. 2000 pieces. Finished it last week, but just now got into photoshop to try to repair the bad picture taking. I didn’t set up the lighting etc.

You can tell by the parts we had to pay the cat in tribute just how little of the image each piece covered. Most of them were actually seemed rather gray until you matched them up with their neighbors.

It was an accomplishment, I will admit.

OMG! Otterhounds are an endangered breed!

With fewer than 800 Otterhounds worldwide, they are more rare than Giant Panda and considered one of the most endangered dog breeds.

Now, I know my next dog will be an Otterhound.

Silkie

The Silkie (sometimes alternatively spelled Silky) is a breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk. The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as black skin, flesh, and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens only have four. They are often exhibited in poultry shows, and appear in various colors.

In addition to their distinctive physical characteristics, Silkies are well known for their calm, friendly temperament. Among the most docile of poultry, Silkies are considered an ideal pet. Hens are also exceptionally broody, and make good mothers. Though they are fair layers themselves, laying about three eggs a week, they are commonly used to hatch eggs from other breeds and bird species. Silkies come in both a full-sized and diminutive forms, the latter being typically known as Silkie Bantams…

Who knew there were so many varieties of chickens? List of chicken breeds.

Some of them have pretty funny names. There’s even one lays that blue/green eggs, and there’s such a thing as an “exhibition” chicken.

My brother usually has a Araucana or two in his flock of layers. So a few green/blue mixed in with the brown eggs. They’re usually also the most aggressive or “smartest” (as you measure intelligence in chickens) birds in the flock as well.
