Utah Republican: Our Atmosphere Needs More Carbon Dioxide

What Republican war on science?

Utah state Rep. Jerry Anderson, who is a Republican of course, and a former science teacher believe it or not, has introduced a bill that would allow industries to pump as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as they want, because he feels there isn’t enough CO2 yet. He’d like to see us return to the days of the dinosaurs.

You can’t make up stuff like this; nobody would believe it. The Salt Lake Tribune reports: Utah Lawmaker: Our Atmosphere Needs More Carbon Dioxide.

HB229 narrows the definition of the term “air contaminants,” clarifying that “natural components of the atmosphere,” including nitrogen, oxygen and other stable, or noble gases, are not pollution.

Anderson’s bill would prevent the establishment of state standards for carbon dioxide below atmospheric concentrations of 500 parts per million. This is a level far above what is currently in the atmosphere, already padded with carbon thanks to two centuries of fossil-fuel burning.

“We are short of carbon dioxide for the needs of the plants,” Anderson, a retired science teacher, told the committee overseeing environmental programs in the the state on Tuesday. “Concentrations reached 600 parts per million at the time of the dinosaurs and they did quite well. I think we could double the carbon dioxide and not have any adverse effects.”

These people are dangerously insane.

Let’s put a bunch of Carbon Dioxide into his home then. I mean it’s so good. Good grief, it amazes me that there are not only people like this out there but people like this who have the ability to make laws.

Also, I wonder if “adverse effects” include the shrinking of the snowpack in the Wasatch, and the drying out of the Salt Lake Valley due to climate change. Nah, I’m sure there won’t be any negative effects. And you can always go the Rick Perry route and ask Jesus or Joseph Smith to send rain. Science!

High carbon dioxide levels can retard plant growth, study reveals

Writing in the journal Science, researchers concluded that elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide actually reduces plant growth when combined with other likely consequences of climate change — namely, higher temperatures, increased precipitation or increased nitrogen deposits in the soil.

The results of the study may prompt researchers and policymakers to rethink one of the standard arguments against taking action to prevent global warming: that natural ecosystems will minimize the problem of fossil fuel emissions by transferring large amounts of carbon in the atmosphere to plants and soils.

“Plants need CO2, so more CO2 means more plants!”

Humans need oxygen and water, but more oxygen or water than needed causes some pretty dangerous conditions.

According to German Chancellor Merkel, Putin wants an end to the violence in Ukraine. Perhaps he’s concerned about a civil war on his borders as well, or maybe he’s thinking that Yanukovych has become too much of a liability, and a more “acceptable” toady needs to be installed, with concessions made to the protesters.

I’m guessing the Olympics in Russia will also make it much more difficult for Putin to do anything about the mess in the Ukraine. He won’t be able to send tanks across the border as he did in Georgia in 2008. Plus, in that case, the witless Saakashvili gave him the perfect excuse to attack. Dust is a natural component of the atmosphere too. It causes roads and freeways in the southwest to be closed regularly. They try to close them before, but sometimes it’s after the accidents. Last October:

DPS confirms 3 dead in blowing dust collision on I-10

[…]

The initial 19 vehicle crash, which resulted in three fatalities, occurred within the westbound traffic lanes of the interstate.

A second two-vehicle crash occurred within the eastbound traffic lanes that involved minor injuries and a commercial vehicle.

Members of the U.S. Air Force 48th Rescue Squadron were among those providing initial care to the injured motorists. The squadron happened to be traveling through the area at the time of the blowing dust.

Following the collisions, they were able to triage and provided critical medical care to the majority of the patients on scene. Members of the squadron also coordinated the on-scene approach and departure of the three responding medical helicopters.

The crash happened just after 12 p.m. The interstate was closed until 11 p.m. At one point, there was a 10-mile backup in each direction, said the Arizona Department of Transportation.

“It’s very different than what we think of during the monsoon. In this case, a steady southwest wind created channels of dense, blowing dust. Unfortunately, one of those localized channels of dust ended up over a busy Arizona interstate,” Chief Meteorologist Chris Dunn said.

Looks like Tennessee and Corker might have shot themselves in the foot as far as VW goes. Or even the whole South could be overlooked because of the anti union Republicans in office.

“I can imagine fairly well that another VW factory in the United States, provided that one more should still be set up there, does not necessarily have to be assigned to the south again,” said Bernd Osterloh, head of VW’s works council.

“If co-determination isn’t guaranteed in the first place, we as workers will hardly be able to vote in favor” of potentially building another plant in the U.S. south, Osterloh, who is also on VW’s supervisory board, said.

“The conservatives stirred up massive, anti-union sentiments,” Osterloh said. “It’s possible that the conclusion will be drawn that this interference amounted to unfair labor praxis.”

A: There were individual mistakes. That’s why we couldn’t affect the result even though we had twice as many chances as the opponents. We just couldn’t score.

Q: What future, if any, do you see for your own work and for your coaching staff? Because, you know, your predecessor was eaten alive after the Olympics—

A: Well then, eat me alive right now—

Q: No, I mean—

A: Eat me, and I won’t be here anymore.

Q: But we have the world championship coming up!

A: Well then, there will be a different coach because I won’t exist any more, since you will have eaten me.

Q: But you’re staying, aren’t you?

A: Yes, I will remain living.

OT, another quantification of the danger of hate.

American Journal of Public Health Study: Homophobia Takes Years Off of Your Life

“We found evidence that anti-gay prejudice is associated with elevated mortality risk among heterosexuals, over and above multiple established risk factors,” writes a research team led by Mark Hatzenbuehler of Columbia University. “In particular, there was a 2.5-year life expectancy difference between individuals with high vs. low levels of anti-gay prejudice.”

The cause, the researchers write in the American Journal of Public Health, may be homophobes’ higher stress levels. It appears all that intense discomfort takes a physical toll.

The self-radicalization spiral is hard to avoid if you’re an advocacy organization. The True Believers tend to be the loudest and most dedicated, and it’s easy for the more moderate members to look around, shrug, and walk away.

Meet the oh-so-noble peace protestors in Argentina

Meet the protestors from yesterday’s demonstration in Argentina — those noble individuals whom the American media is depicting as elevated crusaders for economic justice and world peace.

Let’s start with a few photographs of the anti-war, peace advocates in action. Behold their humanitarian spirit and lofty, principled opposition to violence:

The star attraction of the demonstration was Diego Maradona, the former Argentinian soccer player who made headlines yesterday by leading the demonstration along with Venezuelan socialist Hugo Chavez. This was the first time in the last 10 years that Maradona made headlines for something other than his decade-long cocaine binge, resulting health and legal troubles, and close friendship with Fidel Castro:

Not coincidentally, the demonstrators’ heroes prominently include that great crusader for economic justice and world peace, Fidel Castro:

Castro sent an official Communist delegation to represent him, and they were enthusiastic and welcomed participants:

Here is Maradona, striking his rebellious pose, sitting next to a guffawing Hugo Chavez. Maradona is wearing a t-shirt labelling Bush a “war criminal”. See below for the even more sophisticated t-shirt he wore before his costume change:

A representative gentleman advancing the important and insightful argument that Bush is a Nazi, expressed through his sign showing Bush wearing a swastika:

Here is Maradona, before he spoke to the Socialist throngs, expressing the important and insightful argument that Bush is a Nazi:

Finally, here is Maradona sharing a light moment with one of his heroes, humanitarian and worldwide symbol of Freedom and Propserity, Fidel Castro:

It sure is terrible that people like this dislike Bush and think that U.S. policies are misguided and wrong, isn’t it? Boy, this really does show, as the New York Times told us in the first sentence of its article today on the demonstrations, that “Bush’s troubles trailed him to an international summit here.” These are noble, just and insightful people at these demonstrations and if they don’t like something, that is pretty compelling proof that it is wrong.

Distorted media accounts notwithstanding, isn’t it painfully obvious what is going on here? These are hard-core Communists. Fidel Castro is one of their heroes. This has nothing to do with opposition to the war in Iraq or specific free trade agreements. Those are thinly disguised pretexts. These demonstrators hate the United States because they are genuinely opposed to economic freedom and individual liberty, and they seek to impose the collectivist authoritarianism of Fidel Castro onto the entire Latin American continent. It really is that simple. We know this because they said (and showed us with pictures) that that’s what they want.

Why would anyone act as though their views should be accomodated or taken as credible? Isn’t it more a badge of honor than anything else to be protested against by truly odious people like this?

194 Kragar  Wed, Feb 19, 2014 1:33:13pm

Somewhere along the way, they switched from “lets be kind to animals” to “MEAT IS MURDER, YOU EVIL BASTARDS” and it lost them support in some circles for some odd reason.

It’s interesting. Though the ideology he espouses here is different from his current one, it’s the same condescending snide to anyone who disagrees with him.

He must have decided that the current hypersonic hyperbole ideology is more profitable.

I kind of agree with Greenwald here. Sorry, not going to defend those communist losers like Castro, Chavez, Maduro, Chavistas, Bolivarians, that clown Maradona. Nor will I look past those who agree or are passive about the danger that ideology poses. Lenin’s statue in Ukraine wasn’t torn down by accident. At least I remain consistent. Hated communists in 2005; hate them now.

laissez-faire capitalism champions the economic freedom and liberty of corporations over individuals. dictators like castro promote the the dominance of the state over the freedom of individuals and corporations. to be against a dictator does not make one ipso facto a champion of economic freedom and liberty for individuals

but also, and what pisses me off the most, is for me to hear how ‘liberals’ - and they are talking about me and other progressives, are “against economic freedom and individual liberty”, and “pro-castro”, and this from people who want to kill unions, kill the minimum wage, kill consumer protection laws, and restrict the ability of individuals to sue corporations, which they term “tort reform”

I’ve long though it sensible for Latin America to have substantial anti-American sentiment in view of the wretched US history in that region of the world. If you don’t believe in SSM, don’t marry someone they same sex as you.

If you don’t believe in abortion, don’t have one.

If you don’t believe in birth control, don’t use it.

Stop trying to legislate your beliefs onto people who think you’re wrong.

And if you don’t believe in serving all members of the public without regard to race, religion, color, creed, gender or sexual orientation or disability, don’t have a business that is allegedly open to the public.
