New Wingnut Meme: Leno Was Let Go For Making Too Many Obama Jokes

Filling in a couple of facts today’s Breitbart’s piece neglected to mention
Entertainment • Views: 42,511

Today Breitbart’s “Big Hollywood” section has an opinion piece from “Johnny Carson’s head writer”, Raymond Siller. Amidst polemical nonsense like:

With his pen and phone, our selfie-absorbed president is one whacked uncle away from appointing himself Supreme Leader.

Siller asserts that Leno was the only comedian on late night television “willing to launch comedic drones over the current West Wing.” Siller himself doesn’t go there, but the wingnut rank and file have for weeks been making the case that NBC let Leno go for this very reason.

There are a couple of things to point out here. First of all, Breitbart only identifies Siller as “the longtime head writer on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” In doing so, they are shortchanging Siller’s long resume. Per Wikipedia (and heavily footnoted) Siller became a consultant for both President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew in 1970. He went on to consult and write for a long list of Republicans including Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush as well as Governors George Deukmejian and Nelson Rockefeller. He has also contributed to The Washington Times.

Secondly, Siller states:

Carson felt his mission was to entertain, not proselytize. It may have been Johnny’s Midwest roots that considered any mention of politics or religion impolite. It also made business sense not to offend a large chunk of his viewers.

However, he ignores the business sense of NBC’s move completely. Even though Leno is reputed to have taken a pay cut in 2012, going from approximately $25 million, to $20 million per year, that still averages in excess of $80,000 for every single show. When you consider the the audience for The Tonight Show is both shrinking and aging, it is nothing but good business to bring in Fallon for 40-60% less salary while attracting an audience young enough to please advertisers not attempting to sell catheters or reverse mortgages.

This is quite laughable. Obama can laugh at himself just fine. Siller’s former bosses like Nixon and Angew OTOH.

President Obama has 2.7 years left in office so NBC decides NOW is the time to shit-can Leno? Yeah, great “logic”…..teabag logic.

Seriously. If NBC and Obama were “worried” about Leno’s jokes. He would have gotten canned before Obama’s re-election. I think NBC knows that Leno had been on the air for a long time and it was time for a change. Doesn’t take a background in TV to do the math.

Hush you, Obama’s a dictatorial tyrant and yet somehow we can impeach him and have a majority of his opposition party in the biggest house in the legislature. He only got 57% of the vote than he should have (Yes that’s meant to be over 100%).

The big three rating agencies - Fitch, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s - downgraded the rating of the country to pre-default level

Ukraine’s economy in 2012 is not coming out of recession and in dire need of external borrowing to refinance old debt . Until the end of 2014 , Ukraine should repay about $ 7.3 billion in foreign currency obligations .

However, the solvency of the state raises doubts among Western financiers : the international capital markets for more than six months remain closed for Ukraine , and the negotiations with the IMF reached an impasse.

Getting to the end of 2013 the first tranche of the Russian loan calmed markets. However, in January 2014 , after the resignation of the government of Mykola Azarov Russia suspended the December agreement . Moscow does not conceal the political motivation for such a step. International response to the financial problems of official Kiev immediate - ” big three ” credit rating agencies (Fitch, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s) downgraded the ratings of Ukraine to pre-default level .

Ukraine is certainly in a pickle.

More bad news for Ukraine, as if they don’t have enough already.

bloomberg.com

The yield on the government’s $1 billion of notes maturing in June increased 19 percentage points to 42 percent, an all-time high, at 10:18 p.m. in Kiev. The rate on bonds due in 2023 rose 90 basis points to 11.42 percent. Ukraine’s stock index lost 2 percent and the hryvnia, which is managed by the central bank, weakened 1 percent to 8.95 per dollar.

Investors are ditching assets of Europe’s riskiest borrower after President Viktor Yanukovych’s regime yesterday banned protests, vowing to use “all means” necessary to restore order. Currencies across developing Europe retreated along with the hryvnia, with the ruble tumbling to a record and higher yields prompting Russia to cancel its third bond auction in less than a month.

I wasn’t faulting them. There’s nothing wrong with churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, etc. lending moral support or providing sanctuary & medical assistance, but the fact that religion can also be a powerful igniter of passions makes me a bit leery of seeing it in an already volatile situation. People may very well be largely secular under normal circumstances, but during times of great upheaval…

No doubt about it. Judging by the frequency of their adverts, I don’t think cable news in this country would be possible without that lucrative trade.

Speaking of cable news, CNN has been running this “news” story extolling the virtues of online dating over and over since last Friday…at the same time that every single commercial break on the network includes at least one add for Match, Christian Mingle or Our Time. Every time they hit a new low, they seem determined to go lower over there.

Yes, I know I should change the channel…but one can only watch BBC News about an hour per day before repetition sets in. Obviously Fox News is no option, and I am boycotting MSNBC as long as their “all Chris Christie all the time!” format remains in place.

And let’s not forget how good this is for Jay. His earning potential and control over where/when/why he performs is all his to own now. He can earn at least as much. Word is Jay loves his work. Look at his upcoming work schedule! The link is a tcket reseller, so that’s just his public appearances. It seems he will be working just as hard and only a little less often.

33 Ian G.  Wed, Feb 19, 2014 2:52:58pm

Only in Wingnutistan would replacing an aging, unfunny comic with a younger, funnier one (I happen to love Fallon’s various musical impersonations) be some sort of act of vengeance by the President.

Also, did these people forget when Leno left the “Tonight Show” several years ago, only to change his mind and force out Conan O’Brien? He was well past his expiration date.

I know this is a throwback to the thread downstairs, but it occurs to me that one of the problems with a political position that is simply the opposite of another is that it forces you to espouse some really stupid shit. In this case, the need to believe the opposite of Al Gore forces each wingnuts to choose among a series of nonsensical positions:

1. CO2 isn’t really rising.
2. CO2 is rising, but there’s no proof it’s us doing it.
3. CO2 is rising, and it’s us doing it, but it won’t change anything.
4. CO2 is rising, and it’s us doing it, and it will change things, but that’s okay.
5. CO2 is rising, and it’s us doing it, and it will change things, and that will be bad, but doing anything about it will be worse.

All of which boil down to some form of ‘The Opposite Of What Liberals Believe’. How the hell do you live your life like that?

Eyewitness report from Maidan..
———————————————————
Things that happened on Maidan this evening (Feb 19):

—city hall is overwhelmed with people (including several clergymen) who are bringing food and medical supplies.

—the middle-aged woman who collected our food donations from us gave us a largepackage filled with packets of black pepper and allspice. She said(barked really) “Devushka! When you go around this way, you will see a group of men preparing molotov cocktails. You must take this to them.”

—the same woman then tried to give one of the self defense volunteers (a man in full flack jacket and helmet, weapons and body armor) one of the mandarins we had brought. He had a sandwich in one hand and a soda in the other. “you need vitamin C!” she said. He said “naw, both my hands are full, I don’t want it.” The woman huffed at him in offense and grabbed the collar of his sweatshirt. he was in a hoodie and the hood was up. She stuffed an orange violently into his hood until it sat securely in his collar. “You must eat it! You need your health!” The self defense volunteer laughed and pulled away like he was a child being tickled.

—People from all over Kyiv in all kinds of cars (Kia, Jeep, Lexus, Daiwoo) are driving up to the barricades to deliver piles and piles of tires to add to the fire. Mostly women are carrying the tires towards the front.

—Cobble stones are being ripped up all across Independence square and broken into smaller pieces so that they can be thrown. Women in heels and fur coats can be seen digging up the stones. Even a man i a wheel chair with no legs was there breaking stones with an ax.

—As we approached the fire line, a man in his 60s stood up from his chair. It was sitting against the barricade. He offered for me to stand on his chair so that i could take pictures over the wall. I hesitated. My feet were muddy. “May I?” I asked. “You need to,” he said. He and another woman, without asking, just doing, hoisted me up to the top of the barricade and silently held me steady for several minutes while I documented the area. He then helped me climb down and turned to my friends saying, “Who’s next?”

—Police are still using water canons to try to “put out the fires”. Mostly they are turning the square into a swamp.

—Artists are singing classical Ukrainian music on stage. Their voices are hypnotizing and beautiful.

—The crowds are immense. Everyone is kind and smiling, cooperating together and working hard. One of my friends was even recruited to help carry a huge piece of sheet metal over to the barricade to reinforce it while we were there. People are kind and helpful and lovely. Even the guards manning the gates yell over their megaphones not to order people around, but to thank them for being so kind and keeping to the right and making way for each other.

How can these people be radicals? They want you to be fed and be safe. They want everyone to come join them, because there is more than enough tea to go around, and the band is about to start. ..

Read more at littlegreenfootballs.com

This, of course, was no accident; it was to hide the fact that Siller was and is a Republican hack, writing for other Republican hacks, for decades.

Hell, Siller hasn’t written for The Tonight Show since before Johnny gave the reins over to Jay (a similar situation to now with Jay and Fallon, whereas the old lion retires [or is forced to retire] to let new blood come in); even though Jay was Johnny’s chosen heir, I’ll bet that Siller didn’t and doesn’t give two shits about Jay and the circumstances under which he (finally) retired from The Tonight Show.

No, like many political hacks do, Siller’s Breitbart piece was no more than a crass political attack, with a touch of appeal to authority (“Hey, Raymond Siller was the head writer for The Tonight Show when Carson was still there, so he must know what he’s talking about!”).

Such a load of horseshit.

That’s the second-best reason not to eat sauerkraut, the first being that it’s sauerkraut.

There are many things I ate a lot of as a kid that I don’t get to eat so much anymore, for one reason or another - mostly that my wife and kids don’t like ‘em - fried eggs, lamb’s kidneys stewed with mushrooms and sherry, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, turnips, parsnips, chili…

Sauerkraut is not one of them. I do NOT miss that shit.

I get the rest of them… but chili?

Carson felt his mission was to entertain, not proselytize. It may have been Johnny’s Midwest roots that considered any mention of politics or religion impolite.

I was a fan of Johnny Carson ever since I was a wee tyke staying up late with my dad to watch The Tonight Show. I saw many of James Randi’s appearances debunking “psychic” frauds like Uri Geller and the whole “psychic surgery” thing that was hot shit for a while.

I’ve never been much of a Letterman fan, but when Leno took over the Tonight Show, I quit watching. I couldn’t stand him, and thought he was the antithesis of Carson. Oh well.

Side note: There was a long-standing rumor that Carson was the guy who donated the $1 million for the JREF Challenge, but that apparently was not the case.

I do like sauerkraut; I’m not too sure why, but I enjoy the taste. Of course, I also enjoyed liverwurst, something that most people find wholly revolting. My ex-wife once saw a block of it in the fridge, and not knowing what it was, asked me why there was cat food in there.

The other day I was at the grocery store. I used to go in with only a vague idea what I wanted to buy and cook, and let what was on sale and what looks good inspire me. I used to really like grocery shopping.

Last week it hit me that I no longer enjoy it. Anything I want to cook, SOMEBODY won’t like. I’m half tempted to tell them all to go to hell and make whatever I damn please, and let them fucking STARVE if they don’t like it!

Seriously, you should.

Maybe make accommodations for your wife, because you are a smart man, but your boys can step up their game. My mother refuses to cook only vegetarian just because my sister is home; she’s responsible for her own main protein dish on the nights my parents are doing meat.

The brands I buy come in plastic bags. Nom nom nom, especially the Bavarian with apple & mushroom. I love to take that, dice a few potatos, cut a ring baloney or kielbasa up and dump it all in the crockpot for all day. Heavenly at dinner time on a fall evening.

I like to use sauerkraut instead of onions for my smothered pork chops. I’d rinse the kraut first to reduce the saltiness (a lot), and the resulting bitter/sour/meaty gravy was, well, yum.

a frikadeller is a danish meatball, generally fairly large for a meatball, containing breadcrumbs, and spiced with onions & i guess other stuff. the corresponding swedish meatballs are smaller, without breadcrumbs, and blander

it seems you can have them made out of fish but then they become ‘fiskadeller’

Which is why Gap is voluntarily raising their starting wages, Walmart is now looking at increasing their minimum wage, and others are starting to get ahead of the curve. Gap is increasing their starting wages to $9 this year, and $10 next year.

Fact is that the higher wages will spur more spending by those folks, and reduce reliance on the safety net. Would it mean that government spending will be reduced overall? There’s going to be some offset with higher purchasing costs to governments and businesses, but the end result is that more people will be more well off than the current situation.

Companies like Costco have already shown that a well-paid workforce in a supportive work environment leads to growing sales and thus higher profits despite the mantra that higher pay means fewer jobs and higher prices. Meanwhile Wal-Mart has been getting its ass handed to it for months now due to low pay and downsizing making it impossible to keep shelves stocked. It was just reported today that they’re actually considering raising worker wages, though whether it’s out of recognition of their circumstances or simple publicity remains to be seen.

OK, I read the stupid Guardian article. When did the US express support for “regime change” in Venezuela? Never, that’s when. This writer just extrapolates himself into a wild exaggeration in the course of a single paragraph:

An anonymous State Department spokesman was even clearer last week, when he responded to the protests by expressing concern about the government’s “weakening of democratic institutions in Venezuela”, and said that there was an obligation for “government institutions [to] respond effectively to the legitimate economic and social needs of its citizens”. He was joining the opposition’s efforts to de-legitimize the government, a vital part of any “regime change” strategy.

See, this is why I’m not fond at all of the Guardian. They’ll rightfully criticize rightist dictatorships but they do all they can to be useful idiots for left wing ones. That quote doesn’t suggest a desire for regime change at all though I’m sure the State Department would want that in Venezuela so they’d have a rational actor to deal with rather than Maduro who seems quite wacky.

I am pretty sure that he is also in favor of doing away with all child labor laws.

Oh, my, yes.

The employer owes his employee only enough compensation as will keep him from walking. The employee owes the employee his maximum effort at all times regardless of how poorly compensated he is.

These are very strong, determined people. They’re sick and tired of Yanukovych and his henchmen and their corruption. The average wage in Ukraine is around $410/mo—far less than most of them are worth and they’re a pretty intelligent lot overall, well educated for the most part, yet the govt pays the Berkut an average of $800/mo to keep people in fear and in line.

Even the politicians who are claiming them aren’t the strongest—and not completely trusted. The protestors don’t want to take down the govt so much as change it to a more democratic institution. Right now, it’s top heavy in the admin, with Yanukovych acting as dictator, and Parliament has little say in how the country is run. The protestors would be much happier with better and more representation and a reversal to more power in Parliament.

re: #237 Charles Johnson

Because as far as I know the US hasn’t actually done anything, except to call on the Venezuelan government to respond to protests peacefully with negotiation. Did I miss something else?

According to the Guardian article Stone links to it’s just concern trolling:

US support for regime change in Venezuela is a mistake
The US push to topple the Venezuelan government of Nicolas Maduro once again pits Washington against South America

When is it considered legitimate to try and overthrow a democratically-elected government? In Washington, the answer has always been simple: when the US government says it is. Not surprisingly, that’s not the way Latin American governments generally see it. […]

The Obama administration was a bit more subtle, but also made it clear where it stood. When Secretary of State John Kerry states that “We are particularly alarmed by reports that the Venezuelan government has arrested or detained scores of anti-government protestors,” he is taking a political position. Because there were many protestors who committed crimes: they attacked and injured police with chunks of concrete and Molotov cocktails; they burned cars, trashed and sometimes set fire to government buildings; and committed other acts of violence and vandalism.

Of course we all know who the US government supports in Venezuela. They don’t really try to hide it: there’s $5m in the 2014 US federal budget for funding opposition activities inside Venezuela, and this is almost certainly the tip of the iceberg - adding to the hundreds of millions of dollars of overt support over the past 15 years. Yeah, and I agree with that. The Obama administration has been incredibly measured in most of its diplomatic statements about various hot spots around the world.

But that hasn’t always been the case, and certain commentators seem to see the U.S. government’s approach as unchanging and always imperialist. I hope Obama’s administration has changed some of that, but it’s going to take a lot more work to unravel that perception. For some, like Oliver Stone, it might never happen.

Bride Plans to Marry Her Bicycle

After 15 years together, Lisa Nelson has decided to marry Steel Spokes, her beloved bicycle. The next day, the Spokes shall depart on a six-month bicycle touring honeymoon. On March 2, 2014, the unusual couple will tie the knot in Pacifica, just South of San Francisco. The Hawaiian themed affair will have the bridesmaids dressed in hula attire, complete with a flower girl, and a ring-bearing pooch (also appropriately dressed). The wedding party and assorted guests will be on bicycle. The entourage plans to cycle along the ocean to the old Pacifica Courthouse for the marriage ceremony. A festive luau reception shall follow.

[…]

The bicycle marriage idea came to Lisa as a fundraising idea after reflecting on how many weddings and babies that she had helped fund. The project is posted on Indiegogo. In return for any support, the Spokes will provide an array of unique entertaining perks.

More than you know:

Controversy and confrontation[edit]

In March 2001, as editor of the magazine The eXile, Taibbi burst into the office of New York Times Moscow bureau chief Michael Wines and threw a cream pie spiked with horse semen into his face, after Taibbi’s magazine had awarded Wines the title of “worst journalist” in Russia.[18]
In March 2005, Taibbi’s satirical essay, “The 52 Funniest Things About the Upcoming Death of the Pope”,[19] published in the New York Press, was denounced by Hillary Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, Matt Drudge, Abe Foxman, and Anthony Weiner. Subsequently, the editor who approved the column was fired.[20] Taibbi defended the piece as “off-the-cuff burlesque of truly tasteless jokes,” written to give his readers a break from a long run of hia “fulminating political essays.” Taibbi also said he was surprised at the vehement reactions to what he wrote “in the waning hours of a Vicodin haze”.[21]
Journalist James Verini, while interviewing Taibbi in a Manhattan restaurant for Vanity Fair, said Taibbi cursed and threw a coffee at him, and accosted him as he tried to get away, all in response to Verini’s volunteered opinion that Taibbi’s book, The Exile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia, was “redundant and discursive”.[22] Taibbi later described the incident as “an aberration from how I’ve behaved in the last six or seven years”.[23]
After the death of conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart, in March 2012, Taibbi wrote an obituary in Rolling Stone, titled “Andrew Breitbart: Death of a Douche”. Many conservatives were angered by the obituary, though Taibbi claimed that it was “at least half an homage,” claiming respect for aspects of Breitbart’s style but also alluding to Breitbart’s own openly derisive obituary of Ted Kennedy.
In June 2013, Taibbi and numerous other celebrities appeared in a video showing support for Bradley Manning.[24][25]

Let’s fix that for the NYT.

How about “Emitter of words relating to national security issues”?

I mean, I guess it’s technically true, but it makes him sound too… legitimate. He’s such a thin-skinned drama lama—not what comes to mind when I think “national security reporter”, heh.

It’s black-and-white thinking: Chavez wasn’t a right-wing US puppet, so he was GOOD. Anyone protesting him must be a right-wing US puppet, and therefore BAD. Any criticism by the USG, no matter how well earned, is tantamount to sending in the CIA.

The enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend.

Nailed it. One of my good buddies from college unfortunately is like this. Super nice guy but man naive as it comes about the far left.. I mean thankfully he’s never praised the USSR or anything like that because that one is personal for me given that I had family in the Eastern bloc but I have to remind him that just because a regime talks about being “for the people” as Chavez’s often did doesn’t mean it actually cared about the people.

“emitter of words” is technically true. ‘Reporter’, even in this decadent age, has connotations of professionalism I’m not willing to grant to GG.

The problem isn’t ‘national security’, it’s ‘reporter’.

FWIW, Taibbi has been called out on some of his reporting by more serious economists in the past. His true “gift” is his way with words, and the fact that he’s about as close to Hunter S. Thompson as this generation of journalists has. He does good work sometimes, but seeing him throw in with Greenwald is kind of a disappointment.

re: #251 Charles Johnson

OK, I read the stupid Guardian article. When did the US express support for “regime change” in Venezuela? Never, that’s when.

The Obama administration never supported regime change, that’s true. But the roots of anti-US sentiment among the “chavistas” goes back to 2002, and George W. Bush.

On the other hand, the United States and Spain both rushed to acknowledge the (pro-US) Carmona forces as the de facto government but ended up choosing to condemn the coup once it became clear the plotters had been unsuccessful.

Shortly before 11 April, Alí Rodríguez Araque, a former guerilla and Chávez ally then serving in Vienna as the General Secretary of OPEC, heard of a potential oil embargo against the United States by Iraq and Libya, over US support for Israel. More importantly, he heard that “the United States was planning to prod a coup into action in Venezuela to head off any threat of embargo.”[37] Rodríguez Araque’s warning led Chávez to declare that he would not join such an embargo, and to secretly hide several hundred troops in Miraflores’ underground corridors, commanded by José Baduel.

The United States government immediately declared it’s support for the coup-installed regime, and blamed Chavez’ governments actions to have caused the events.[102] They also falsely stated that Chavez had resigned form presidency and dismissed his cabinet, and that security forces under his command had fired upon unarmed protesters.[103]

Upon news of Chávez’s return, Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor to US President George W. Bush, said, “We do hope that Chávez recognizes that the whole world is watching and that he takes advantage of this opportunity to right his own ship, which has been moving, frankly, in the wrong direction for quite a long time.”[104] Bush denied any involvement of the US government in the coup attempt and asked Chávez to “learn a lesson” from it.[105] Asked whether the administration now recognizes Mr. Chávez as Venezuela’s legitimate president, one administration official replied, “He was democratically elected,” then added, “Legitimacy is something that is conferred not just by a majority of the voters, however.”[106]

In 2009, former US President Jimmy Carter told Colombian newspaper El Tiempo that he believed that Washington knew about the abortive coup and may have been involved.[105]

Bush Administration officials acknowledged meeting with some of the planners of the coup in the several weeks prior to 11 April but have strongly denied encouraging the coup itself, saying that they insisted on constitutional means.[107] However, a Defense Department official who was involved in the development of policy towards Venezuela said the administration was sending a different message. “We were not discouraging people,” the official said. “We were sending informal, subtle signals that we don’t like this guy. We didn’t say, ‘No, don’t you dare,’ and we weren’t advocates saying, ‘Here’s some arms; we’ll help you overthrow this guy.’ We were not doing that.”

This may all be old news for us, just another regrettable pile of left over, Bush administration incompetence. However from the (admittedly blinder wearing) perspective of supporters of the current, democratically elected Venezuelan administration, this history is still very relevant.

Which is a shame, because IIRC, he did a story on the subject during the OWS period and I thought it was really good and informative.

I dunno, that seems to be the choice between the Cromwelleans and Stuarts to think on English history. I think I’d just get out of Dodge in that case.

In a left wing autocracy, I’d be able to find a job. Possibly even be a dissident.

In a right wing autocracy, I’d be able to find a firing squad. As the guest of honor.

I think I’d rather prefer the job.

Maduro’s election was fake? I can’t find any international observers who were there who support that conclusion. This kind of allegation is incredibly irresponsible, fueled by cognitive bias more than any real evidence of fraud. It’s the kind of utterly baseless claim Teabaggers make.

Stop and think about that one for a second. These are people who idolize Vlad Putin, a man who only the truly gullible believed was powerless while Medvedev was president.

Well, not really; I’ve not seen much moonbat support for Putin, only wingnut and ‘moderate’ dudebro. The moonbats, OTOH, still think that ‘socialism’ (who are we kidding, it’s full-on Red Commienism in Venezuela) is such a superior ideology to anything that even smacks of conservatism that even a draconian dictatorship is to be supported if it espouses it. I’m honestly surprised they aren’t still backing ‘Best Korea’ too :-P

Holy fucking shit…some of these RWNJs really do fap to the notion of a gun-toting “warrior” Jesus, completely discarding the bulk of what the Bible says about him.

Talk about cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs…

They’re rather listen to whacked-out mushroom dreams (or, allegorical commentary on the Church in Rome) from a dude who lived hundreds of years after Jebus than whacked-out hagiography from dudes who lived scant decades after the J-Man.
