What I’d pay money to see is for Beck’s antics to cost him his audience, his relevance, and his media exposure.

America was just peachy when child labor was acceptable or slavery but marijuana is legal in some states, gays can get married in others, and health care is more affordable. How terrible. Won’t someone think of poor Glenn and his repression.

He can burn all the flags he wants. But he burned all his bridges and credibility with me long ago. The is what happens when wingnuts snort anti depressants, drink too much coffee and get a crappy show to rant in.

The GOP is a party whose power base is in the South and Midwest, which even to this day are predominantly white outside of the major cities. Hence why, since the days of Nixon and the “Southern Strategy,” the GOP’s dogma has been that anything that helps white poor folks is good, just so long as they keep voting Republican. That a lot of those things help them or their donors doesn’t hurt, hence why we get instances like Issa going to bat for payday lenders (i.e. legal loan sharks).

I’m not sure if it was here I mentioned it or another site, but I did a little (it’s me, so it was very little) casual research a few years ago on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit flag burning.

This was dated back in 2000, so I’m sure there have been (*cough*) a few more incidents since then:

Even the Citizens Flag Alliance, the umbrella group funded by the American Legion to coordinate support for the flag-burning amendment, turned up only 74 potential incidents of flag desecration, the report said, and most of those also were linked to other behavior that violates existing laws.

(From esquilax.com, “The Flag Burning Page”)

They were so pissed off about even the *idea* of flag burning that they were willing to consider a Constitutional Amendment to prohibit something that virtually nobody does.

This is too easy a target

In Harry Turtledove’s “Southern Victory” series, Lincoln ended up losing his reelection bid and spending the rest of his days becoming a worker’s rights advocate, traveling the country to give speeches and finding a lot of common ground with Marx. He ended up being one of the founders of the Socialist party in that timeline, which replaced the Republicans after James G. Blaine lost the Mexican War in a manner that mirrored largely how the US had lost the Civil War.

Yeah.

The thing is we had a copy of the source document for the mistake in the library in which I worked. Simplifying (and noting this is memory so may have a slipsy or two), back in 1942 some organization in DC printed up this little flyer that had some statements by Lincoln on one side and Boetcker’s Ten Cannots on the other. But whoever did the work bollixed it thoroughly and the ‘who said them’ was put on the wrong side.

They actually printed a correction (the library had both in the archives along with several other ‘mistake’ documents), but a lot of people just don’t pay attention. And it happened to get my attention back then about 15 years ago because some fool passed out this whole flyer and the head archivist went off with laughter and explained it. And showed the fool. With the news crew present.

The thing is a lot of people will point to the misprint as proof it was Lincoln who said the phrases, and they refuse to believe otherwise because they’ve seen a copy of the 1942 error - unless you happen to have the correction document around.

From Russia With Lust

On a Saturday night in May, Mark Ames and Matt Taibbi were drinking Pepsi and smoking American Spirits in a one-bedroom apartment in a high-rise near Times Square. They took turns leaning over a plastic compact disc case, snorting lines of speed. I declined their offer, and instead popped a tranquilizer I sometimes take called Soma. I just had a feeling I was going to need it.

Mr. Ames, 34, and Mr. Taibbi, 30, are Americans who for the past several years have been living in Moscow, where, since 1997, they have edited and published a raucous biweekly tabloid called eXile and have been doing their best to introduce Hunter S. Thompson’s “gonzo” style of journalism to 25,000 Moscow readers.

They were in the U.S. on a book tour; their first book, The eXile: Sex Drugs and Libel in the New Russia , had just been published by Grove Press. New York was the last stop. They’d driven a Lincoln Continental 10,000 miles around America, appearing at bookstores, classrooms and think tanks. Average turnout: 25 people. They’d borrowed the Lincoln from Mr. Taibbi’s father, Mike Taibbi, the Emmy-winning NBC-TV re

He spoke about his sex life in Moscow. “Russian women, especially on the first date, expect you to rape them,” said Mr. Ames. “They’ll go back home with you and say, ‘No, no, no,’ and if you’re an American, you’ve been trained to respect the ‘No,’ because you’re afraid of sexual harassment or date rape, and so you fail over and over. But it took me a while to learn you really have to force Russian girls, and that’s what they want, it’s like a mock rape. And then you come back here and you’re really freaked out-because you don’t know if that actually exists deep in all women’s psyches, that that’s what they all want. All relations between guys and girls is basically violent, I think. It’s all war.”

The terrible message in these slogans is “FUCK THE POOR.” Boetcker spent his career pandering to the wealthy (because DUH poor people are not going to pay to attend a motivational seminar) and convincing them that all their success was due to their own self-reliance, gumption and “can do” attitude, that everything was their own effort and to just ignore everybody who helped them on the way up.

Loading Lincoln’s name on to this collection of Douche Excuses is just the usual “appeal to authority.” Take away Lincoln’s name and you see what a bunch of horseshit this is.

OK, I understand that I went too far with the Alzheimer’s reference. Or maybe with the sarc tag, since I sincerely thought in hindsight that he shouldn’t have been subjected to public speaking when in private he was already very degraded. Remember, this is a man who was already suffering in office, and this was another 4 years beyond that.

It’s actually the one reason I’m uneasy about Hillary; the only President to serve a first term at a greater age would be Reagan…and Alzheimer’s doesn’t discriminate based on sex…

It’s not cool to mock Reagan for that. You or someone you love could be stricken with Alzheimer’s some day, and there may be other people here who are dealing with family members who have it.

My mother and both my grandmothers suffered from Alzheimer’s. I saw it from a distance with my grandmothers and up close with my mother. It is, without a doubt, the most dreadful disease I’ve ever witnessed. And I say that as the father of a brain cancer survivor.

I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with it. I didn’t have a clue how utterly devastating it is until I watched this mini-documentary and read the associated article at the NY Times website a few years back. It’s about an extended family in Colombia, many of whose members have been stricken by early-onset Alzheimer’s.

It left me in tears. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy and it cured me of ever thinking there was anything even remotely funny about the horror of such a disease being visited on someone.

A few days ago, Kragar posted a most enlightening article about the NRA’s effort to put the brakes on the ammunition hoarding frenzy. Why would they do this when their client industry is enjoying record sales and unheard of profits? No, they haven’t suddenly become responsible citizens. I think it is because the hoarding has started to seriously affect sales of certain guns. AR-15s still sell briskly, and at record prices, but only far gone wingnuts are buying those right now. Otoh, the nutburgers are buying practically every kind of ammunition, as soon as it shows up and at whatever price is asked. 22 rimfire is specially hard to find and dramatically over priced when it is available. People who aren’t nuts are also interested in .22 ammunition but, unlike the hoarders, they are not willing to sit around all day waiting for a few boxes to become available, and then pay several times the former price for it. Sales of .22 rifles have plummeted and many of these can be found at, or even below, their pre-panic prices. These used to be a bread and butter item for the industry. Now, with ammunition scarce and expensive, they are so many paperweights as far as non-nut buyers are concerned. The same is true to a lesser degree with other guns that lack nut appeal, sane people might consider them, but not if they can’t get ammo for them.

It is odd. I have seen some European far right support for Assad, but not much for Putin or Chavez. I think it’s more of a general expression of support for nationalism. There has been some limited cooperation between racial supremacist groups like the Black Panthers and White Nationalists. I think Vlaams Belang tried some outreach to Japanese nationalists at one point. These alliances don’t last long for obvious reasons.

Well, the European far-right is not averse to socialism. Or whatever one may want to consider Chavism. Chavez was also an authoritarian and anti-American. More bonus points for the European right. Finally, the big one, Chavez hated Israel.

I can almost excuse Oliver Stone. He’s a smart guy but he’s just nutty almost to the point of mental disability. Someone like Michael Moore is a better example of why some Western leftists get sucked into supporting bad causes like Chavez’s Venezuela. Radical chic (like wearing a Che T shirt), populist anti-capitalist fantasies which are left over from the 60’s. Moore is a smart guy, but like a lot of others, he just can’t resist the appeal.

Perhaps we have had too optimistic view of the world, thinking that the Soviet Union was the cause of all sorts of problems.

Perhaps it was, but many more issues pre-date the USSR and frankly the Soviet dictators kept a lot of stuff in check.

Anyway:

IOC: ATTACK ON PUSSY RIOT WAS `UNSETTLING’

The International Olympic Committee says images of the attack on the Pussy Riot punk group in Sochi are “very unsettling.”

IOC spokesman Mark Adams says the governor of the Krasnodar region has apologized for the attack and is investigating.

[…]

On Wednesday, Cossack militia attacked the group with horsewhips as they tried to perform under a sign advertising the Sochi Olympics.

Adams says the IOC wants to know more details but called it “largely an issue for” the Russian government.

[…]

Meanwhile, political discontent in Kyrgyzstan is reviewed with an important little tidbit buried in a paragraph:

There is one more feature to the portrait of a new “oppositionist”. Quite an ugly incidents occurred in the office of 24.kg news agency on May 14, 2011, when about 15 uninvited people headed by Salmoorbek Dyikanov shamelessly came and raised a scandal. They insulted journalists and employees, including offenses on ethnic line, threatened that “will find addresses of 24.kg news agency administration and burn down their houses,” the representatives of non-title nation were recalled that “Russia is for Russians”, and “Kyrgyzstan id for Kyrgyz.” Then they entirely accused all workers of 24.kg news agency of espionage. Employees of law enforcement bodies arrived at the scene quickly, but couldn’t cool Asaba’s ardor. The insulted workers wrote an application to police and the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Ethnic identity and resulting conflicts are bubbling up all over the place. Whatever the 21st century is becoming, it does not appear to be a sea of peace and brotherhood among all men.

Speaking of what’s old is new again:

JAPAN MAY REVIEW PROBE ON WWII SEX SLAVERY

Japan’s top government spokesman said Thursday that Tokyo would consider re-examining a 20-year-old study that led to a landmark apology over its forced prostitution in World War II.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga was responding to an ultra-conservative opposition lawmaker who said there was no such thing as sex slavery - an emotional issue for women wartime victims across Asia.

Suga said that Japan would consider verifying the authenticity of the interviews with 16 South Korean women who said they were forced to serve as prostitutes for Japan’s wartime military.

The remark underscores the longstanding revisionist views and doubts over the victims’ accounts, and would certainly further escalate already strained relations between Japan and South Korea.

[…]

The statement, issued by then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono, acknowledged many women were forced into prostitution for Japan’s wartime military despite the lack of records clearly showing the Japanese government’s systematic involvement.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been criticized by South Korea and China for backpedaling from Tokyo’s apologies and past acknowledgement over its wartime atrocities. […]

Although numbers vary, some historians say as many as 200,000 women from across Asia, most of them Koreans, were forced to serve as sex slaves to Japanese soldiers at front-line brothels.

Amazing.

Death toll mounting — at least 35 bodies counted by Kyiv Post and other journalists

Feb. 20, 10:59 a.m. — A Kyiv Post journalist counted the bodies of 10 slain protesters in Ukraine Hotel on Kyiv’s Independence Square, while another Kyiv Post journalist counted the bodies of three slain protesters on Khreshchatyk Street and was heading to Kozatsky Hotel on the northern side of the main square, where at least 15 more bodies were taken. Medical personnel at Kozatsky Hotel said another seven bodies would be delivered soon.

Meanwhile, a third Kyiv Post journalist inside the central post office has been told by doctors that seven fatal gunshot victims were taken there.

Most of the victims appeared to have been victims of gunshot wounds from police and shot near October Palace this morning as protesters advanced on police.

Armour-piercing ammunition was used in at least some of the cases, with bullet holes piercing the bullet-proof vests that some of the militant demonstrators were wearing.

Meanwhile, thousands of people remained massed on Independence Square, fearing police attack.

Feb. 20, 12:01 p.m. — At least six buses, each loaded with some 30 riot-control police officers, were massing near InterContinent Hotel close to St. Michael’s Cathedral. A short time later, an eyewitness report that snipers were shooting near St. Michael’s Square. Meanwhile, at least 60 police officers captured by protesters continue to be held hostage by demonstrators at the state energy building near the opposition-occupied Kyiv City Hall. Snipers were also seen near the “Stella” monument on Independence Square in Kyiv. — Daryna Shevchenko and Mark Rachkevych

I still don’t understand what brought about this latest uprising. I thought Yanukovych was indeed elected, was he not? Or did he just take over in some coup in 2010?

Some of those police officers are not much more than kids, poorly trained and certainly not taken care of by those who recruited them. They’re not the elites, nor the snipers (both mercenaries and regular cops) who are killing Ukrainian citizens.

Feb. 20, 1:34 p.m. — At least 60 police officers and their hired help are being held in the state energy company near Kyiv City Hall. Some said they were captured while sleeping this morning at Ukrainian House, while others were captured by protesters during the violent clashes by October Palace. Many of the men were only 18 or 19 year old, were not trained and were armed only with rubber truncheons. Others were trained police officers. Many had not eaten in 24 hours. Some had minor injuries but were beating treated by medics in the building. Their fate is unknown and depends, according to the captors, on the outcome of negotiations between anti-government EuroMaidan demonstrators and the government. —Daryna Shevchenko

Prague Post: Czech goverment wants ban on those responsible for Ukrainian violence

Prague, Feb 19 (ČTK) — The Czech Cabinet believes that it is not possible for people who are responsible for the violence in Ukraine to be allowed to enter the EU member states, Foreign Minister Lubomír Zaorálek (Social Democrats, ČSSD) said, adding that major responsibility rests with Ukraine’s Cabinet.

(snip)

Zaorálek met Ukrainian ambassador to the Czech Republic Borys Zaychuk later today to inform him of the government’s critical stand on the situation in Ukraine where minimally 25 people have died in clashes between the demonstrators and the police since Tuesday.

“Zaorálek wrote in a press release that he told Zaychuk that the methods used against demonstrators in Kiev and other cities are entirely unacceptable.”

The best possible outcome would be for Yanuk to resign, along with his cabinet, and leave the country. But not before their ill-gotten assets are seized and their bank accounts frozen.

They should have to suffer more than those they have robbed and killed—the people of Ukraine—because they are the real criminals.

Meanwhile, as Yanuk waits for help from his masters to crush this opposition…

Even though you are doing a better job of covering what’s going on in the Ukraine than 100% of the US Media, maybe today you should take a break and find some positives to concentrate on.

I’m getting depressed by some of the images I am seeing this morning regarding the civil strife and the deaths, and I am pretty sure it has to be wearing on you. One day off from the human madness for yourself would be a good thing on your birthday. Sadly the mess will still be there tomorrow.

I’ve mentioned the odd similarities the Kiev images reminded me of before, but the one Lidane posted in #179 looks like it could be right out of the Kent State mess in 1970. I can’t find it, but I remember seeing an image concentrating on a couple Ohio National Guardsmen coming over the crest of a small hill at Kent and having a very similar guns-drawn stance. It’s chilling to me this AM seeing that. And it reminds me of the fact that these protests and police responses can happen anywhere. Even in the USA. Too many did from the civil rights to the Viet Nam war protests.

Ahhh…the weather as it turns to spring. Right now it is getting real dark and there are huge rumbles of thunder. Looks like today we get to see a warm front move in first taking the temps close to 60°. Then a cold front coming in later today to battle it out with the warm and taking temps back down to mid 30s overnight. Thunderstorms, high winds and heavy rains predicted in Ohio today, especially in the northern areas. And with the snow melt, still frozen ground and rain, flash flooding, creeks and rivers rising is on for the next few days.

Ah, now if they have some proper artillery - the 122 mm howitzer 2A18 (D-30) is the usual modern former Warsaw Pact field howitzer - that will be interesting. Those 2A45 ATGs? Pure suicide for the crews.

It’s essentially the same 125mm smooth bore that the Russian-designed T-64, T-72, etc. use. A lot would depend on what sort of ammo they have for them and what they go up against.

It pisses me off when nutjobs here in America talk about armed rebellion and how it will “restore” “their” country, and we have examples all over the globe that it just doesn’t work that way.

Peace to the people who are fighting. I can’t imagine what they’re going through.

Happy BD to you, too, Rev! Live long and prosper. : )

BTW, how did it feel growing up to have the same BD as Geo Washington?

When I was in school, we still celebrated it as a natl holiday, same as Lincoln.

The SYG law is clear, if you “feel threatened” then you can shoot, it is a subjective decision, and if you leave no living witnesses, then it is pretty airtight.

In the end, cannot blame jurors for applying an asinine piece of legislation.

George Zimmerman says angry Florida mob chased him out of Miami

George Zimmerman’s recent press junket to Miami, FL was reportedly aborted after he received death threats from an angry mob on a public beach and was informed that there is a bounty on his head.

The Miami Sun-Sentinel reported on a TMZ article detailing Zimmerman’s visit to Miami last week for a spate of interviews with Univision and CNN.

Sources told TMZ that Zimmerman and his girlfriend checked into their hotel and went to the beach, where beach-goers allegedly threatened the trio and informed Zimmerman that there is a $10,000 bounty on his life.

That’s a hopeful sign.

I can’t help but wonder if it’s being done independently or if orders came from above. If it’s orders from the Chief Directorate, that tells me they either have little confidence in the regime’s survival, or that all hell is about to break loose and they can’t guarantee that state security offices won’t fall into the hands of protesters, so it’s being done as a precaution.

Freeper reaction to the Ukraine violence.

Some side with the dissidents, but many others seem to have tapped a Kremlin party line:

“Soros is pumping a lot of resources into this conflict. He really wants balkanization.” (balkanization=independence from Russia in Putin fanboy-speak.

This one has the wingnut memes firmly in place:

If any teenage males did that they’d likely have been gunned down, There’s a reason pacifist groups use women to pull these stunts. Security personnel in America will normally try to take women into custody without violence, but when defending a high-security facility their attitude towards young male intruders is generally “Shoot first and ask questions later.”

Ummmm no. Security sucked. they should have never been able to even get close to the building. From Wonkettes piece.

In addition to mounting a protest, of course, the group inadvertently did the government a favor by exposing huge flaws in the plant’s security. re: #359 Dark_Falcon

I know I’d make a lousy revolutionary, because I have an autocratic nature - the monster that lives in the basement that I do my utmost to make sure stays locked in the basement. I’ll happily comment on politics, but I have enough self-awareness to not let myself directly participate by running for office or something along those lines.

Not trying to toot my own horn, but those who know me invariably describe me as “highly charismatic” and “able to talk people into anything” through my gift of gab, as well as a talent for manipulation (or persuasion depending on your point of view). And a revolutionary situation would bring that monster out of the basement in full - and horrifying - force.

I’d probably be sending e-mails or Tweets along the lines of Lenin’s infamous “Hanging Order” if I were a revolutionary leader, and that is something I cannot, and will not, allow myself to become. I have no wish to go down in history as a 21st century Pol Pot or Stalin or Lenin, and I recognize all too well the epic barbarism I’d be capable of if I let the monster in the basement get his way.

That’s why I’d make a lousy revolutionary. I guess if anything, I’m keenly aware of my own heart of darkness, even if it’s genuinely disturbing not only to others, but to me as well. As Captain Kirk once said on an old Star Trek episode, “We can admit that we’re killers, but we’re not going to kill today. That’s all it takes.”

Far better to walk away than let the reptilian brain take over and disfigure one’s soul.

Russia reportedly sending mediators to Ukraine as truce falls apart

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly is sending an envoy to Ukraine to try to mediate discussions with anti-government protesters - at the request of the country’s president - after violence flared up again Thursday in Kiev, leaving 33 more people dead.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the announcement after Putin and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych talked over the phone, state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported, according to Reuters.

Sure, let’s get the wolf to mediate between the dogs and the sheep.

NORTHWOOD, Iowa — Residents of Northwood were being evacuated to Kensett Thursday morning as firefighters battled a chemical fire at a fertilizer plant on the grounds of the Northwood airport.
Several residents reported hearing explosions when the fire broke out. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Iowa 105, a main artery in Northwood, was blocked off in the area near the fire.
The Iowa State Patrol, Northwood police and the Worth County Sheriff’s Department were assisting at the scene.
Northwood is north of Mason City and just south of the Minnesota border.

Looks like it. Of course, crewing that beast would be quite dangerous, since a smart enemy is going to target his opponent’s ranged firepower first.

On the other hand, even improvised artillery is demoralizing to foot soldiers and riot police in a way that massed ranks of people are not. mostly because mortars can bombard and kill infantry with the grunts having a way to strike back.

Welp, it looks like it’s gonna be one of those days. A friend of a friend on Facebook posted a call for ‘executing’ Obama, and I pointed out that doing so was a federal offense.

Apparently, a single missed payment in EVE Online caused a massive conflict.

The 21 hour-long conflict involved over 7,548 player characters overall and a maximum of 2,670 players in the B-R5RB system at one time, with the ensuing losses totaling 576 Capital class ships including 75 Titans (the largest ships available to players), along with thousands of smaller vessels. The in-game cost of these losses total over 11 trillion ISK, a theoretical real-world value of $300,000 to $330,000 USD.

What happens when a man fires a .338 Lapua Magnum bolt-action rifle after leaving the cleaning rod in the barrel.

Apparently he was using the rod to knock out the cases that were _sticking_ in the chamber. IOW, he was rapidly closing in on an overpressure Kaboom and lucky for him did in his rifle with the rod first. The other would have probably killed him.

On Thursday, organizers will unveil the USA’s first Bitcoin ATM machine, tucked in the backroom of a downtown Austin bar. And just in time for SXSW, the three-week interactive/film/music conference that begins Mar. 7
/
The ATM will be located at the Handlebar, a hipster hangout on East Fifth Street in Austin. The machine will scan a user’s palm print and government-issued ID to verify identity then allow them to add money to a virtual Bitcoin “wallet” or withdraw the currency to a mobile phone app, Kelley said.

The machine will also perform a one-time face recognition scan to verify users’ identity. “All you need is your phone, your ID, your palm and your face - all the things people carry with them on a daily basis,” he said.

Today’s initial entry in the “I iz a responsible gun-owner” sweepstakes is fairly weak since anyone could forget their gun in a small canvas bag at the office.

The very definition of typical and irresponsible gun owner.

I think 90% of people probably don’t have the focus required to safely own a gun, and the rest of them we’re just playing the odds. I think the level of situational awareness and mental discipline is probably close to that of an airplane pilot, and I don’t mean airline, I mean fighter.

And people who don’t have it are just a fucking tragedy waiting to happen.

From Eastwest Skytales via a friend…

When I awoke this morning I was somewhat surprised to see that live TV coverage was showing smoke and fireworks on the perimeter of the Maidan. Commentators announced that early this morning the Maidan activists had retaken some territory previously lost to the Berkut police around the barricades. It didn’t seem serious enough and I and others quickly dressed and made our way down to the Maidan. In any event neither of us expected any trouble as the President had already announced that today was going to be a national day of mourning for people who lost their lives during the last two days.

By the time we got to the Maidan 45 minutes later we came across a war zone. Black smoke was already pouring out of one corner of the Conservatory of Music and tyres were burning all along the perimeter of the barricades. Meanwhile a Maidan activist stood on stage and directed the deployment of various ‘sotni’ regiments to various sectors of the Maidan perimeter to reinforce the Maidan from anticipated counterattacks. More ominously he directed everyone’s attention to snipers being spotted on the hill in front of the Zhovtneviy Palace. We were all stunned and it appeared that many around us were equally shocked as well. What was going on and why were they firing? No one seemed to know but it all became irrelevant as stretcher after stretcher carrying the dead and wounded began to be carried out from the front lines.

We quickly realized this was war. Live rounds were now being fired and people were being killed. Before retreating we made our way to the Conservatory to ask the activists there why the building was set on fire. We were told the Berkut had lobbed grenades or molotovs into the building where Maidan activists had set up a Red Cross station. It seemed the activists were managing to contain the fire from the inside and indeed it would soon be put out. The next scene however was a jaw dropper. There in the entrance to the Conservatory was a group of about 20 activists armed with semi-automatic weapons getting ready for whatever their orders happened to be. We left.

Over the next few hours the media was full of reports of armed Berkut units being formed near the Building of Officers and Cabinet of Ministers, ostensibly for an all out assault on the Maidan. Snipers in the meantime continued to do their work and casualties were mounting continuously. Fearing the police would abduct the bodies from city hospitals and secretly cremate them destroying evidence of death by sniper fire, the Maidan leadership ordered that the bodies be laid out in several spots near the Maidan perimeter and maintained with dignity. Instant shrines began growing around the bodies which lay covered with flags and blankets, - but with faces exposed for all to see. Various media were seen filming the scene and people began congregating to pay their respects. It was surreal.

A few hours later we returned to the Maidan. TV media had announced that some 50 police and one sniper had been taken prisoner near the Miadan area. We saw one Berkut led past the stage and into a tent for questioning. An uglier scene took place near the post office where we saw a provocateur beaten to the ground and then led away. He had Russian identity documents on him .

Many more people are now responding to the constant appeal for tyres, medication, blankets and manpower and the flow of supplies via the entrance near TSUM is unceasing. Meanwhile the Mayor of Kyiv announced he was leaving the Party of Regions and called upon the President to call off the police. More importantly he announced that he would reopen the Metro immediately. The bad news is that reports are flowing in from various sources that provocateurs ‘titushky’ are being driven to Kyiv where some are being armed with weapons and allowed to maraud through the city creating fear and havoc in the population. For their part there are also numerous reports from surrounding towns and cities where citizens are organizing to stop buses of provocateurs, disarming them and in several cases setting their buses on fire. All train traffic to and from western Ukraine has been stopped.

As far as government is concerned their is talk that the Parliament may still convene in session today however the presidential administration appears to be in total chaos. No one appears to be in control of events which suggests that perhaps the President no longer is. The speculation is that this vacuum is now being filled by individuals loyal to Putin. Mevedchuk? Kluyev? Accurate information is scarce but there’s no doubt the insurrection around the country is growing in intensity and a war in downtown Kyiv has begun.

re: #519 Gus

He may have no choice. His party is collapsing, with its membership fleeing the country, he’s lost 20% of Ukraine’s territory, the country is on the brink of outright civil war, the Russians didn’t come through with the second tranche of financial aid, and it’s entirely likely that Putin may well throw him under the bus because he’s become too much of a liability. Putin will find a more acceptable toady for Kyiv, and Yanuk can spend the rest of his days in exile, remembering that he was overthrown not once, but twice in the span of a decade.

And Putin can keep Yanuk around in Russia as a chip to be tossed back to the Ukraine as a sop at some point. Presumably they will find the records indicating how much he has gouged and squirreled away in external bank accounts - giving them grounds to have him permanently on charges and with outstanding extradition requests made to Russia to get him back for trial.

That’s what they said about Gaddafi. It’s also what they say about Assad.

Yeah, it’s always hard to predict. Q’Daffy was seriously delusional so I can see how he stuck around too long. Same with Saddam. I would have thought Morsi would have had enough sense to get out early but he stayed.

Russia was still offering Yanukovych quick infusions of large sums of cash up until a day or two ago. I think Russia rescinded the offer Yanukovych indicated that he isn’t interested in trying to stick with it and crush the uprising. I’m betting he makes a break for it.

I hope they submitted their resignations along with that declaration. Or at least that the governor asks for them since they appear unwilling to carry out their properly appointed duties. And it is a duty, not a privilege.

New Mexico judges may be removed in one of two ways:

On the recommendation of the judicial standards commission, the supreme court may discipline, retire, or remove a judge.

Judges may be impeached by a majority vote of the house of representatives and removed by a two-thirds vote of the senate.

Here’s what some “Russian experts” think
Is Ukraine president losing the Kremlin’s confidence?

Russian experts say the Kremlin is scrambling to assess its options as Yanukovych’s government appears to unravel. Moscow’s earlier view that Ukraine’s drift toward the European Union could be checked by manipulating aid, they say, may quickly give way to more dire scenarios.

Several suggest it may be a matter of days, if not hours, before Yanukovych is forced to flee Kiev to his political strongholds in eastern Ukraine, and try to reconstitute his - technically legitimate and legally elected - government in a relatively stable place like Kharkov or Donetsk. But that would accelerate the process the Russians are referring to euphemistically as the “federalization” of Ukraine.

That would mean the country’s effective dismemberment into separately administered zones headed by political forces loyal either to the pro-EU protest movement centered on Kiev’s Maidan square, or to the pro-Russian government of Yanukovych.

“I think we can expect decisive interference from [Moscow] in the near future,” says Andrei Piontkovsky, a longtime Kremlin critic. “Creating a situation of chaos and violence plays into the Kremlin’s hands, and provides a justification for Russian intervention and the division of Ukraine. This is the scenario that’s coming onto the agenda: to break up Ukraine and pull the east and Crimea into Russia’s orbit.”

Evil must be a preservative.

[…]

“This is a major step,” said Efraim Zuroff, the head Nazi hunter at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, when told of the arrests. “Given the advanced age of the defendants, every effort should be made to expedite their prosecution.”

[…]

The three men arrested, aged 88, 92 and 94, all live in state of Baden Wuerttemberg in southwest Germany. They were taken to a prison hospital, Stuttgart prosecutors’ spokeswoman Claudia Krauth said.

Krauth said officials had yet to uncover enough evidence to merit the arrests of three other suspects aged 94, 91 and 90.

She said authorities seized “diverse papers and documents from the Nazi era” from the suspects’ homes. She declined to provide details.

Five men made no statements, while the 88-year-old admitted being a guard at Auschwitz but denied committing any crimes, Krauth said.

Prosecutors in Frankfurt said more documents and photographs were seized during raids on the homes of two men aged 89 and 92 in the neighboring state of Hesse. A spokeswoman, Doris Mueller-Scheu, said neither suspect was arrested nor made statements.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, state police said they raided the apartment of a 92-year-old man who admitted being an Auschwitz guard but denied participating in any crimes. They found no incriminating material during the search.

The Eastern Crimea, and the area around the Black Sea, is the only thing in Ukraine the Russians give a damn about - the Western part of the country is irrelevant to them.

But the Black Sea area….that’s vital. If they lost that, they’d be in deep shit, and the Russians simply won’t allow that to happen.

Ummmm no. Security sucked. they should have never been able to even get close to the building. From Wonkettes piece.

In addition to mounting a protest, of course, the group inadvertently did the government a favor by exposing huge flaws in the plant’s security. The protestors were able to breach security and wander around inside for nearly two hours in what was supposed to be one of the nation’s most secure nuclear facilities;

Sounds like the facility’s security for that sector existed only on billing invoices.

Sounds like the kind of thing that results in the new government starting a new currency and refusing to recognize the old one except under closely examined circumstances. Leaves the looters holding worthless paper.

Though it makes you then wonder how much of the loot is going at as gold, precious metals, or already in the form of foreign currency.
