Guardian Author Says Mysterious Godlike Entity Deleted Text for His Snowden Book as He Was Typing

The NSA ate my homework
Weird • Views: 32,199

Rarely do I laugh out loud while reading something on the Internet, but this latest piece from Guardian writer Luke Harding, author of the Guardian’s book on Edward Snowden, provoked a genuine lolwut out of me: Writing the Snowden Files: ‘The Paragraph Began to Self-Delete’.

I was writing a chapter on the NSA’s close, and largely hidden, relationship with Silicon Valley. I wrote that Snowden’s revelations had damaged US tech companies and their bottom line. Something odd happened. The paragraph I had just written began to self-delete. The cursor moved rapidly from the left, gobbling text. I watched my words vanish. When I tried to close my OpenOffice file the keyboard began flashing and bleeping.

Over the next few weeks these incidents of remote deletion happened several times. There was no fixed pattern but it tended to occur when I wrote disparagingly of the NSA. All authors expect criticism. But criticism before publication by an anonymous, divine third party is something novel. I began to leave notes for my secret reader. I tried to be polite, but irritation crept in. Once I wrote: “Good morning. I don’t mind you reading my manuscript - you’re doing so already - but I’d be grateful if you don’t delete it. Thank you.” There was no reply.

A month later the mysterious reader - him, her, they? - abruptly disappeared. At a literary event in Berlin my Guardian colleague David Leigh told a journalist about my unusual computer experiences; he led with the anecdote in a piece for the leftwing daily Taz. After that, nothing. I finished The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man in December.

In idle moments I wonder who might have been my surreptitious editor. An aggrieved analyst at the NSA’s Fort Meade spy city? GCHQ? A Russian hacker? Someone else intent on mischief? Whoever you are, what did you think of my book? I’d genuinely like to know.

Yes, folks, let’s recap. Luke Harding claims that while he was writing his book with OpenOffice, he saw text being deleted right in front of his eyes, not once, but several times over the course of several weeks.

But he did nothing to find out what was going on, or to try to stop it? He didn’t turn off his network connection? He didn’t take out his iPhone and record a video of it happening? He didn’t call the Guardian’s IT department to check his computer for malware? He didn’t check to see if his Delete key was sticking? Didn’t ask his officemates if they were playing a prank on him?

He just watched it happen, over and over? And the only action he took was to write cute little notes to… a godlike entity who was reading every word he typed?

It’s difficult to finish this post because I keep breaking out in laughter, but where do I get one of those cool flashing beeping keyboards? Mine just sits there.

Because if I’m some sort of nefarious rogue agent with remote access to the system, I’m going to go through the trouble of pushing keystrokes in real time, delete-by-delete, rather than just corrupting the file or dumping a nasty virus on the machine, either of which would be:

* far harder to trace
* far harder to document, and
* out-and-out easier

How fucking stupid and credulous am I supposed to be, anyway?

At this point, I’d almost think the best course of action would just be to turn this nut loose on his own keyboard. I don’t think any virus or file corruption would be as damaging as his own stupidity.

Kinda reminds me of something I read a while back where some paranoid “victim of gang-stalking” was claiming that someone was hacking in to his posts and introducing typos and grammatical errors. He just knew that he was incapable of ever making a mistake himself so it had to be a mysterious cabal of evildoers gas-lighting him.

LOL!! It’s like that movie—Naked Gun?—where the guy is trying to trying on one side of the bathroom wall to tug out a bit more linen out of the hand dryer, and on the other side of the wall, we see a bunch of Chinese laundry workers frantically trying to clean the hidden part of the enormously long roll of cloth. It’s the invisible hand of government, wandering into this guy’s computer and stimying (stymiing? stymingming? oh to hell with it. You know what I mean) him.

Crazy Radio Host: I Hate Homosexuality Because I Love Black Men

Bryan Fischer will say anything to legitimize his beliefs that gay people are cooties-having hedonists destined for a life of hell. Their greatest crime? Not certain types of relations, but daring to ask the majority at large that they treat people different from them with common decency and give them the same legal protections that they and their sexless marriages enjoy. When Don’t Ask , Don’t Tell was repealed, Fischer said it would lead to more pedophilia.

More amazingly, it has stayed up for 25 minutes and attracted a number of comments. Some of the commenters don’t seem to realize that Fischer is one of theirs.

Since some of us were wondering about the Ukrainian military…..

Ukraine’s army will likely balk if ordered into streets

analysts say Ukraine’s embattled President Viktor Yanukovich might have trouble getting his armed forces to obey orders to crack down on the protests at the center of the country’s growing political crisis.

“It is by no means clear that the army would fight against its own people,” said Stephen Blank, a senior fellow with the American Foreign Policy Council.

Ukraine’s military leadership has remained largely apolitical and would be wary of getting involved in an internal political crisis. “I think the military wants no part of this,” said James Howcroft, a retired Marine intelligence officer and military attaché with extensive experience in the region. “It’s a no win situation.”

Even if some commanders did agree to enter the fray, the military would likely fragment and some forces might go over to the opposition, said Adrian Karatnycky, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

Right now there are two stories that deserve far more press attention than they are getting. This first is the story we’ve covered in recent updates. The Ukrainian parliament, or Rada, has been meeting all day. However, most of those present were members of the opposition parties. In fact, there were many reports that many MPs from the President’s Party of Regions had fled the country. Regardless, they were not present at the Rada session.
….
Earlier today Ukraine’s own Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted an extremely conciliatory statement, one that even said that
Ukraine should enter into agreement with the European Union
(jump to update 1844). This is the central demand of the first EuroMaidan protests, the key issue at play, and a major difference with the official position of the President.

What happened? It’s not clear, but it’s another sign that Yanukovych doesn’t even have full control of his own government, forget about the streets of Ukraine.

Look, just because you’re bitter that your particular brand of batshit cray-cray didn’t sell well outside of your neatly gerrymandered Minnesota district, that doesn’t mean we’re not ready for a female president. We’d just rather have one that’s not YOU. Or Sarah Palin.

Snowpocalypse is in full swing here in the wold north country. Total expected snowfall somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 foot.

My sister says that the UP is expecting the worst blizzard since the one that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald.

I tried to be sympathetic, but I’m mostly bitter about a lack of actual weather here so it didn’t come out too well.

Nothing like a chainsaw injury to take your mind off a fire ant attack.

(True but misleading—the chainsaw was off, and I smacked it going after a series of stings up my leg. An ant fell out as I raked the chain with my hand. Almost stopped bleeding now, but the kitchen looked like Dahmer’s
birthday party. After the bleeding allowed a look in the pants, the real culprit showed—dry leaves from the trees I cut.)

From the BBC.

Whatapp’s anti-corporate ethos - Lost in all the talk about the huge price tag for Facebook’s $19bn (£11.4bn) purchase of the WhatsApp message service is the strong stand against advertising that the company’s two founders, Jan Koum and Brian Acton, have taken.

“These days companies know literally everything about you, your friends, your interests, and they use it all to sell ads,” they write on their website.

Mother Jones’s David Corn wonders whether the two newly minted WhatsApp billionaires can keep their “culture-jamming ethos” as part of Facebook, whose lifeblood is advertising.

“Will they continue to spread their anti-consumerism, tech-is-for-the-people gospel?” he asks. “Will they change Facebook, or will Facebook change them?”

Talk about a load of horse manure.

Probably to further distinguish from statutory rape.

Yep:

Forcible rape, as defined in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, is the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Attempts or assaults to commit rape by force or threat of force are also included; however, statutory rape (without force) and other sex offenses are excluded.

Grab whatever isn’t nailed down and run. Since EU airports aren’t letting them skedaddle there, I imagine they’re gonna beat a hasty retreat to Russia with everything they can steal.

194 goddamnedfrank  Thu, Feb 20, 2014 4:19:12pm

Also, “forcible rape” is already out. The FBI is using a new definition. I’m guessing the line item for forcible rape in the 2013 UCR data is a holdover purely for comparison purposes:

Violent crime in general dropped about 5.4 percent between the first half of 2012 and the first half of 2013, according to the FBI’s semiannual Uniform Crime Report. Rapes, however, increased. There were 14,400 rapes reported from January to June last year, up from 13,242 in the first half of 2012.

But it’s unclear how that compares to the year before. Under the old definition, the number of rapes declined 10.6 percent between 2012 and 2013. The rise in number instead reflects the new, more-accurate definition of the crime. The number of instances of rape rose in 138 cities and fell in 119, according to comparisons where data for both years were available. The FBI data captures just a fraction of the nation — only 272 cities, a group home to just over a fourth of the national population.

The nearly 90-year-old definition described “forcible rape” as “the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will.” Under the new definition, the agency stopped calling it “forcible rape” instead simply referring to the crime as rape. It was also changed to drop reference to gender and is no longer limited to penile penetration of a vagina. The new description for rape is:

“The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”

re: #183 FemNaziBitch

Because only bodily injury counts as crime?

Given that it includes “threat of force,” I don’t think it is meant to exclude cases where someone cooperates because they are afraid of the consequences otherwise.

Personally I think it’s a bigger issue that the code specifies that it must be a female. Although it’s less common, men can be raped too.

One of the reasons she couldn’t get the GOP nomination is that she’s a woman. She’s thinks that opinion is national, not party-wide, failing to realize that the same nation that’s moved on from ‘white only’ is probably ready for something besides male-only.

Like any revolution, when the nobles realize that the fall is near, the looting and running begins.

How very true that is; usually, it’s the more prescient ones, or at least the ones with solid political instincts that make it out. The aristocrats who lack that instinct…..those are the ones who usually end up against the wall.

re: #194 goddamnedfrank

The reason “forcible rape” is on Tables 1,2 and 3 of the UCR is that those tables detail “percent change,” and this is the first year for the new definition. Percent change is impossible to calculate for the new definition because that data wasn’t gathered in 2012. Go to any of the Table 4 spreadsheets and you’ll only see columns for “rape.” That is the definition that percent change will track in future years.

President Barack Obama will propose an election-year budget that would drop reductions he had previously embraced in federal benefits, officials disclosed Thursday. He also will ask Congress to approve about $56 billion in new or expanded programs, stepping back from aggressive efforts to tackle long-term government deficits and debt.

Obama is scrapping his previous offer to trim cost-of-living increases in Social Security and other benefit programs. That idea had been a central component of his long-term debt-reduction strategy, even though it was considered odious by many Democrats.

It says something that he, like the rest of the country, has grown tired of the constant talk about the deficit/debt and now is focusing on getting things done in the budget. Look for more Republican whimpering about how we simply cannot have a single dollar more in new spending lest the country fall.

Reminds me of CBS’s Sharyl Atkkisson and her DoJ hacking conspiracy theory. Another example that having computer issues, when it comes to journalists, is prima facie evidence of government persecution:

philadelphia.cbslocal.com

“This suspicious activity has been going on for quite some time - both on my CBS computer and my personal computer,” Attkisson said. “CBS then hired its own independent cyber security firm, which has been conducting a thorough forensic exam … they were able to rule out malware, phishing programs, that sort of thing.”

Attkisson described some of the bizarre things that were happening with her computer.

“There were just signs of unusual happenings for many months, odd behavior like the computers just turning themselves on at night and then turning themselves back off again.”

And the F-15 was all McDonnell-Douglas. Both are pedigreed, reliable aircraft, and with a little bit of modernization, would be perfectly capable of competing with modern fifth-generation stealth fighters.

Yeah. Keep in mind that it’s stealth capable. All three are. This idea that the F-35 is invisible is bogus. Helmet weapons systems are already in use and not unique to the F-35. After listening to Traven I have to wonder about its ACM capabilities.

Most of the value of a “new fighter” is upgrades to the avionics and weapons systems. All of which is also capable of being applied to just about any reasonably modern fighter design. Reduced radar visibility is nice, but I don’t know if it’s worth the teething issues of something entirely new when nobody has anything that has proven capable of touching what we have already.

Comcast’s Web of Lobbying and Philanthropy

Only a few hours had passed after the $45 billion merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable was announced last week when an early voice emerged endorsing the giant deal.

“Win-win situation for American businesses,” said the statement from the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

It was the start of what Comcast executives acknowledge will be a carefully orchestrated campaign, as the company will seek hundreds of such expressions of support for the deal — from members of Congress, state officials and leaders of nonprofit and minority-led groups — as it tries to nudge federal authorities to approve the merger.

But what the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce did not mention in its statement praising the transaction was that it had collected at least $320,000 over the last five years from Comcast’s charitable foundation, which is run in part by David L. Cohen, the Comcast executive who oversees the corporation’s government affairs operations.

It is a hint, critics say, of just how sophisticated Comcast’s lobbying machine is, an enterprise that, like the company itself, reaches across the United States and has more than 100 registered lobbyists in Washington alone.

That team, as of the end of last year, featured five former members of Congress. But it also included Meredith Attwell Baker, who left the Federal Communications Commission in 2011 to help lead Comcast’s internal lobbying office in Washington — just five months after she voted to approve a big deal for Comcast, its takeover of NBCUniversal.

WGA Reaches Out to MSNBC Anchors to Help Unionization Bid

“MSNBC’s anchors are fearless advocates for our nation’s working-class families—night after night, they stand up to corporate greed, corruption, and wrongdoing,” said WGA East exec director Lowell Peterson. “It is essential that they hear what people employed by the same corporation have to say about their own workplace struggles.”

The WGA has been attempting since 2012 to organize about 100 freelance producers and associate producers at NBC’s documentary-reality operation Peacock Prods. Reps for parent Comcast / NBCU did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

The guild expressed frustration over the legal maneuvers used to prevent the National Labor Relations Board from counting the ballots from an election last June — and warned that Comcast/NBCU’s “flagrant abuse” of the law will only get worse if it’s allowed to take over Time Warner Cable.

“Comcast / NBC has refused to recognize its employees’ right to organize for nearly two years.” Peterson said. “That is the power and danger of media conglomerates that have pockets so deep they can afford to stall and evade a basic responsibility owed to their own employees - the responsibility to honor the results of a secret ballot vote for representation.”

Since we’re talking military tech:

Renault details new hybrid propulsion demonstrator

The system is being integrated into one of a batch of 10 pre-production Vehicule de l’Avant Blinde (VAB) Mk III 6x6 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) being built by Renault Trucks Defense.

The company’s solution, called the Integrated-Starter Alternator Motor (I-SAM) parallel hybrid system, was originally developed for the civil market. The VAB architecture will see I-SAM installed between the Renault diesel and automated transmission, which is located at the front left side of the hull, but unusually to the rear of the driver’s position.

According to Francois Deloumeau, Advanced Engineering Manager at Renault Trucks Defense, the two key elements of the DGA contract are to analyse the value of electric propulsion in land vehicles compared to conventional drive systems; and to de-risk hybrid thermal/electric propulsion systems for military applications.

Installing the hybrid thermal/electric propulsion system in an armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) with a gross vehicle weight range of 16-25 tonnes offers the user a number of significant operational advantages. These include providing the vehicle with a “boost capability” of between 30 and 50% depending on the engine. In the case of the demonstrator this will be over 100 hp. It also enables the vehicle to operate in silent mode for a short period of time, which could be useful for ‘creeping’ the last few kilometres of a mission.

Renault Trucks Defense claims that its parallel hybrid thermal/electric system is more reliable than series hybrid layouts, as there are fewer components. Having fewer components also saves weight and reduces fuel consumption on rough terrain by between 20 and 30%.

The whole project is weird. Weird in that it started off as this combined services base model with the V/STOL for the Marines all built around the same design. Stranger though is how the USG become involved in what was supposed to be a global market for the F-35 which is shrinking by the day.

There seems to be this notion that the F-35 is invincible. That it’s invisible to radar. I’s not. It’s really supposed to be a fighter AC but are they now going to sell it as a bomber? Typically when we’re about to bomb a country we give advance warning so they’ll know we’re coming.

So in AA combat you can see an adversary well in advance. All well in good but then you have to fire off two long range radar guided missile and hope they hit the target. Sparrows or heat seekers won’t work at this distance. Let’s say they all miss. Then you have two Sparrows left and your guns. You’ve finally caught up with an Su-30 or Mig-29 which can out maneuver an F-35.

Max speeds:

F-18 - 1,190 mph
F-35 - 1,199 mph
Su-30 - 1,320 mph
Mig-29 - 1,490 mph
Su-35 - 1,490 mph
F-22 - 1,498 mph
Su-37 - 1,553 mph
F-15 - 1,650 mph

So really you’d want to face off in air-air with an F-22 and not an F-35. It’s nice to be able to escape from being chased in ACMs. Looks like the F-15 can blow all of their doors off. And look at the F-18 for half the price of an F-35 effectively having a top speed of that of an F-35.

The F-35 is designed to be a strike aircraft, not an air superiority fighter. It’s being shoehorned into the role and it does not compare favorably in speed or agility. For air superiority, choose a -15; despite its age, it’s fast and nimble and, more to the point, built entirely for the mission of air-to-air combat. Strike fighters are A-10’s with the ability to not be hopelessly outclassed if they get bounced.

The F-35 is intended as a dual role aircraft while the F-22 was intended as a relatively ‘pure’ air-to-air interceptor in the mold of the F-15C.

Vietnam was a long time ago and AMRAAM is much more capable than the Sparrow missiles it replaced. It proved very effective against Iraq in 1991 and against Serbia in 1999.

No, more likely all he could get. Ukraine has restrictive gun control laws. All guns owners must be licensed and all guns are registered. A lot of those Maidan fighters are under 21 and that’s the minimum age for ownership. Odds are that since this shit began it’s been damned hard to get a license in the Western cities.
